Tony’s Take DODGER BLOWOUT - TAKE THREE Sports rivalries are so much fun! And there’s so many reasons for them that make little or no sense. Like St. Louis and Chicago in baseball. One’s a beer town, the other a major city with big shoulders, great food and they support all of their major league teams, unlike St. Louis, where only baseball has cache’ and basketball and football leave for greener pastures.

In fact, the biggest town that can’t decide on a professional football future is Los Angeles. The original Rams began in Cleveland and the old AAFC in 1946.

Then they left for Los Angeles in 1950 but departed for St. Louis in1994. Afterwards, the Oakland Raiders moved to L.A. and won a Super Bowl before returning to Oakland, when the Hells Angels persona of the ’60’s, ’70’s and ’80 got really old in LA. Now Oakland, a beer town with champagne budget beer drinkers and loyal fans, are bereft of both pro football and basketball, not woke enough nor rich enough to keep the Warriors on the east side of San Francisco Bay or the Raiders from the real glitz of Hollywood - presently found Las Vegas. Viva Las Vegas! Muerte to Oakland!

Back to La-La Land. Los Angeles is a city (town) whose attitude about most things athletic is ho-hum at best. Only the Lakers ( from Minneapolis) and the Dodgers (from Brooklyn) have maintained their status because 1. Los Angelenos love to sit on their asses for professional sports and baseball is best for that and 2. The Lakers, with high profile fans like Jack Nicholson, became a marquee act, a must-see first run movie at your local theater. But compared to the Dodgers, the Lakers have had so much more star power that it would be impossible to name the top 50 NBA players of all time without at least eight of them being Lakers. And it’s fun to travel to Chavez Ravine, a formerly Chicano-settled hilly area north of downtown Los Angeles which was “gentrified” for Walter Alston and the Dodgers in 1960. A beautiful baseball yard with few flaws, great traffic flow and wonderful weather, Dodger Stadium has had its share of stars and successes. They even won a World Series this millennium! Wow! So has Anaheim, known only as the site for the original Disneyland, which opened in 1955.

Today the Dodgers, with their record streak of six Rookies of the Year (none are left on the Dodger roster), Cy Young Award pitchers and rent-a-pitchers (a couple are still there) and their super salaried traded-for superstars (Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith) are on the outside, looking in, sort of like the remaining Middle Class in the Los Angeles Basin. For you see, like the Mighty Casey, the Dodgers have struck out….again. They were snake-bit by the Arizona Diamondbacks this year in a three-game sweep. No clutch hitting from a lineup of four players with 100 runs batted in or more. And pathetic starting pitching. Stuck in a city that has been turning into crap for the longest time, the Dodgers have rolled craps again. My heavens, being a Giants fan can be so much fun when the chips are down.

Because L.A. has never been a chips-down burg. It’s too full of itself, too full of hustlers and hucksters, cameo-seekers and con artists. In a town of single floor housing and a downtown that stopped attracting people some time right after World War Two. A town with little soul, the anthesis of Motown.

We all love our plants. Especially, the ones which we’ve planted ourselves and have watched grow over time. Digging the hole, fertilizing, watering, pruning, managing pests, and all the sweat equity put into the process can explain a lot of this relationship. I get folks all the time to ask questions about all sorts of strange phenomenon they experience with their trees.

Most of the time it ends up being a small negligible issue but sometimes not. In this article I want to inform readers about an issue that I am seeing with our state tree, the bald cypress. An issue that many of my clients are noticing as well.

The bald cypress, Taxodium distichum, was officially recognized as the official state tree of Louisiana in 1963. For native Louisianians, we know that our relationship with the bald cypress goes way back before that piece of legislation. Folks have been calling the extension office wondering is these strange growths are going to kill their cypress trees. It almost sounded like they were describing the seed cone of a bald cypress but after reviewing a picture, this was not a seed structure at all. It was a gall produced by the cypress twig gall midge, Taxodiomyia cupressiananassa.

Midges are related to flies and therefore are classified in the order Diptera with other common flies like house flies, horse flies, and mosquitoes. Members of this order are referred to as true flies and display halteres in place of hind wings. Halteres are modified wings in the shape of ‘drumsticks’ that the insect uses for balance during flight. Gall midges are small in nature with most falling within a range of 0.5-3mm. Galls are distinctive growths on plants due to the activity of mites or insects. The larval stages of these pests chew on various plant parts like leaves, twigs, flowers, fruits, and roots. leave salivary secretions. The secretions cause an increase in the production of naturally occurring plant growth hormones. Increased hormone production results in increased cell numbers and size.

The gall is basically a protective structure that houses the gall inducing larvae until they drop to the ground and pupate. Some may refer to a gall as tumor-like.

The cypress twig gall midge develops on leaves and small twigs of both bald cypress, Taxodium distichum, and pond cypress, T. ascendens. It overwinters on the ground where the gall fell off from the previous season. Adults emerge in spring and lay eggs on developing branches and needles.

When eggs hatch and larvae begin feeding on plant tissue, the salivary secretions induce the growth of the gall where it covers and protects the young insects for the remainder of the growing season.

Leaves, along with all of the galls, fall to the ground in fall with natural leave drop. This cycle will continue every year unless someone intervenes.

Most insect galls are the outcome of host and plant evolution over the years. These small insects exploit a niche for survival and species proliferation. Due to this co-evolution, the galls don’t necessarily cause harm to the tree. They mainly take away from the overall aesthetics of the tree.

Especially when an accumulation of galls appears on a branch, eventually turn brown causing the limb to droop. Some genetic profiles within the cypress genus are less susceptible to this gall midge, meaning that you’ll find some trees that are covered and some that aren’t.

To control and manage cypress twig gall, the infection cycle must be broken. If a cypress tree is observed with significant gall formation during the growing season, make an attempt to rake up fallen leaves and collect old galls in late winter and early spring. Collect everything in a bag to throw out with the trash or add them to the burn pile. Insecticide treatments aren’t recommended because we don’t have a solid, practical option for control. Luckily, there are several natural predators that can help keep the cypress twig gall midge population low. In fact, there are at least five different parasitic wasps that can attack either eggs or newly hatched larvae.

Luckily, this isn’t a serious problem, but I can understand the concern after going through severe drought conditions for almost the whole span of 2023. Our trees don’t look their best and folks are worried. Do what you will to manage the cypress twig gall midge, but don’t forget that maintaining a mulches area above the immediate root system and providing supplemental irrigation during times of drought can go a long in keeping your landscape trees looking and feeling their best.

There were questions surrounding Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide after an early loss to Texas, but they’ve since righted the ship and are currently in control of the SEC West with an undefeated SEC record.

The Tigers aren’t far behind though and could leapfrog the Crimson Tide with a win if they can replicate last season’s magic in which Brian Kelly and Jayden Daniels were able to triumph in their first-time facing Saban and company.

Agents Cite Four Subjects for Four Separate Littering Piles in Orleans Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited four subjects for alleged littering violations on Oct. 17 in Orleans Parish.

Agents cited Thaddeus Brandt, 27, of New Orleans, Maurice Tero, 38, of Slidell, Margaret Thomas, 64, of New Orleans, and Richard Lavigne, 68, of New Orleans, for gross littering.

Agents were on a litter enforcement patrol in Orleans Parish on Oct. 17 when they found four separate large litter piles.

Agents found a large litter pile near Michoud Blvd. and found items that linked Brandt to the litter.

Agents then found another large litter pile and found items that belonged to Tero off Michoud Blvd.

Agents were then notified about another large litter pile off Kent Dr. Agents investigated the location and found items belonging to Thomas.

Agents then conducted a follow up investigation on an anonymous complaint of litter in Algiers.

Agents found the litter pile off Tullis Drive and found items linked to Lavigne.

Gross littering carries up to a $900 fine, up to 30 days in jail and 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement program.

Agents participating in these investigations are Agent Mason Castello and Senior Agent Salvador Mangano.

Last season saw the Tigers pull off a two-point conversion in overtime to secure a thrilling 32-31 win that ended up leading to a trip to the SEC Championship Game.

Daniels performed even better in his second season with the Tigers and is currently among the Heisman Trophy favorites at Caesars Sportsbook, as he’s tied for the second-best odds to win it at +300.

The Tigers have fared well against the Crimson Tide recently after years of struggle against Saban, as they’ve won two of the past four meetings outright and covered the spread in three of those four.

Both teams will have had two weeks to prepare for the matchup, which could play a deciding factor in the SEC West chase.

LSU already has two losses this season, one against Florida State and one in conference play against Ole Miss. In a season that has already been somewhat disappointing based on preseason expectations, a win against Alabama would be a boost for second-year head coach Brian Kelly.

The opponent should be coming in hot. It’s important for the Tide to be in rhythm after the break.

“Just keeping your focus still on sharp,” wide receiver Isaiah Bond said of the key to a successful idle week. “Even though it’s a bye week, don’t treat it like an off week. Just making sure we finish off strong and then use the weekend to rest our body and then come back stronger next week.”

Alabama enters the home stretch of the regular season coming out of the bye. After LSU, the Crimson Tide faces Kentucky on the road, then has Chattanooga in Tuscaloosa before the Iron Bowl at Auburn.

At least on paper, the team with the best shot of dealing UA its second loss of the season, effectively dashing any hope of making the College Football Playoff, is LSU. Fortunately, the bye allows Alabama to get some players healthy, including linebacker Trezmen Marshall, who missed the Tennessee game with bruised ribs, and cornerback Terrion Arnold, who suffered what Saban described as a “slight” concussion against the Volunteers.

In review and ahead of his 72nd birthday on Halloween, Saban is at his lake house with Miss Terry and will watch practice film, recruiting tape and LSU cut-ups looking out over the water. Part of that study will be taking another look at LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who’s on pace to be a Heisman Award finalist.

“First of all, the guy’s an outstanding athlete,” Saban said of Daniels. “He’s a dual-threat quarterback.

He can run. He can make you miss. He can extend plays. And he’s a really good passer. And they have really good-skill guys on offense. But they have great balance on offense, too. I mean, they run the ball effectively. They’ve got a really good scheme in terms of how they use him to create triple option type of plays that you have to defend, which really helps their running game, not just because he can run but it helps the runners run because of the way you’ve got to defend him on the perimeter.”

Daniels is completing 73.1% of his pass attempts, totaling over 3,000 yards of offense with 30 touchdowns. Daniels, listed at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 95 more and another score in Tiger Stadium a year ago against the Tide, an LSU overtime win.

The Bayou Bengals have won three games in a row, producing 49, 48 and 62 points behind Daniels and 6-foot-1 wideout Malik Nabers. LSU’s last loss came in a thrilling 55-49 shootout against Ole Miss on Sept. 30. When previewing the Tide a week early on the SEC teleconference, Kelly noted how Jalen Milroe and the Tide skill position players are “underrated.”

Hope all is well and we are now starting to prepare for the holiday season. It really seems like everything is just happening way too fast for me. A few months ago I somehow messed up my achilles tendon. I really didn’t know what I messed up. Needless to say, I put off going to the doctor til it hurt too much to walk. Well, I have been walking around with a “boot” for the past two weeks. One more week of having the boot on all day and the fourth week gradually walking without it. Then the fifth or sixth week (depending on the outcome of the fourth week) back to the orthopedic doctor. I’ve been a little miserable.

But, anyway. Let’s get to business. I had promised to show you the flowers I had been working on for a wedding. So I will do that, since I have been steadily working on Thanksgiving and Christmas projects, I thought this would be a nice change. Her colors were navy blue and yellow and she wanted them to be silk flowers so they could be kept forever. This is the corsages I made for Mom’s, grandmothers, great aunts, and other special ladies in the couple’s lives. They were really fun to make and just seemed so bright and happy to me! All it took were five small silk tea roses, a little filler flowers, navy blue sheer ribbon, some floral tapes and corsage pins. Easy peasy!

Now I am fixing to start designing All Saints Day bouquets with fresh flowers. I will be working with white and bronze football mums, red roses, yellow and white cushions, vintage carnations, misty blue limonium, riboulina, and alstromeria. So I guess I better get started.

So ....what will your next project be? Mine..........after the bouquets, having fun working on Christmas ornaments!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Looking back over the year, there are some success stories that START volunteers are especially proud of.

One of those is Shatzi’s story.

Shatzi was adopted from a large shelter by a World War II veteran with whom he lived for many years. When his dear owner became bedridden. little Shatzi, now 14 years old, stayed by his side. When his owner passed away, there was no one to care for Shatzi.

START found a foster home for this wonderful, loyal little guy where he lived until a family with a big heart adopted him. At 16, Shatzi has lots of energy, loves fo go for walks and socialize with people and other dogs.

Pigeon jumped up on her perch to tell us that when it comes to finding a forever home, sometimes the third one is the charm.

After two homes did not work out,Pigeon was back with us. As cheerful and sweet as ever, she settled back into the cat room and began making friends with START volunteers and visitors who came to see the cats for adoption. Even though she was now 6 years old, we felt there was a forever home waiting for her. Before long our Pigeon found that wonderful home where she has become a cherished family member.
