Words to GREAUX by GROW CROTONS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT I first learned of a croton plant after hearing a presentation on popular and easy to grow houseplants. In fact, Dr. D.G. Hessayon, author of The House Plant Expert, explains that the vivid colors and variety of leaf textures found in the croton plant easily make it one of the more popular plants for use around the home. It seems like today that gardeners and plant enthusiasts are getting much braver and starting to use the croton in container planting, in-ground planting beds, and even out in the landscape.

The croton plant, Codiaeum variegatum is a member of the plant family Euphorbiaceae. This plant family contains some very interesting plants that range in uses. Most aren’t surprised to hear that crotons are related to another showy ornamental plant, the poinsettia. However, crotons are also related to cassava (Manihot esculenta), spurge (Chamaesyce spp.), and the dreaded Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera). It is a robust family with a multitude of different types of plants.

In its native habitat within Southeast Asia, crotons grow into 10 feet tall, bushy shrubs. In the U.S. we are more acquainted with smaller 2-3ft shrubs with big coarse leaves grown in decorative pots. The leaves themselves can range from 2 to 12 inches long and offer different shapes. The foliage color can range from various hades of green to white, pink, orange, red, yellow, or purple. It’s these bright colors and various leaf shapes that make this plant popular.

Crotons can be planted outdoors in areas with very bright, yet indirect light. Think of areas like underneath the canopies of shade trees or a protected courtyard. They will need to be protected from cold weather or it should be understood to treat them like annuals because temperatures around and below 50°F can cause sudden leaf drop. Crotons might be best utilized outdoors when grown in a container by themselves or in a mixed planting with other plants. That way they can be moved to a more protected location when cold weather becomes an issue. When planting croton indoors, look for a bright room with east or west facing windows. The more shade a croton receives, the less color it will have. So, whether indoors or outdoors, a very bright light setting is ideal.

Don’t forget that crotons can be included in mixed container plantings. I think you could make a strong case for them being a thriller plant and a filler plant. Use them in combinations with plants like ageratum, chrysanthemums, ornamental cabbage, ornamental pepper, pansies, and petunias.

Have fun mixing contrasting textures and growth habits to create your own design. At the end of the day, cold weather is going to be an issue. Containers can be moved to more protected areas during cold weather events. You can even find plant dollies to help increase the mobility of larger containers.

Every plant has its issues with pests and croton isn’t alone. Spidermites and scales can be problematic at times. Observation is key to dealing with either of these pests. When symptoms appear, apply insecticidal soap, neem oil, or horticultural oil to control. Spidermite populations can be kept at low numbers with a couple of treatments throughout the year. Scales can be slightly more tedious to manage. Look to apply at least three successive treatments with one of the above listed products.

What an eventful weekend! Saturday my daughter and I were a part of the craft show at Academy of Our Lady in Marrero. This is my granddaughter’s last year there, so it was a bittersweet day. Although, I do plan on continuing to be a part of their yearly craft show. WE have made a lot of lasting friendships and hopefully continue to stay in touch. But Carlea’ will no longer be there, she will be off to college fulfilling her dream to become a trauma surgeon. She has been taking college courses at school so she has a little of a head start but a long way to go.

I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who came out to support AOL’s Craft Show, which was sponsored by the Alumni Club. The parking lot was packed! I know we haven’t even passed the bird around the table yet but I would like to tell you about my hottest selling item! Glad I took a picture at home because they didn’t last long enough at the show. This is a design by Liz Vigolitto, painted by me! And, YES, his little nose actually lights up!

They were so much fun to paint! I painted 6 of them in hardly any time at all. Then I painted other lighted ornaments that I will share with you next time. I was really excited that they were such a popular item.

Jayden Daniels deserves the Heisman!

After exiting the Week 10 loss to Alabama with concussion symptoms, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels was considered questionable heading into Saturday’s home game against Florida. But there was nothing questionable about his performance in a 5235 win over the Gators. Daniels became the first player in FBS history to throw for at least 350 yards and rush for at least 200 yards in the same game.

Not this year, this decade or this century. Ever! Daniels continued to make his Heisman Trophy case, leading the Tigers (7-3, 5-2 SEC) to touchdowns on five consecutive second-half possessions. Daniels’ 606 yards of total offense included 372 yards passing and 234 yards rushing -- 85 of which came on the longest run by an LSU quarterback in program history in the second quarter.

Daniels didn’t just smash single-game records either. He became the first player in FBS history to eclipse the 12,000-yard mark through the air and 3,000-yard mark on the ground in a career with his historic performance vs. the Gators in Death Valley.

“If [Daniels] didn’t win [the Heisman Trophy] tonight, he has got to be the leading candidate,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “Unless the Heisman is just about popularity. If you want to be the most popular, then fine, but he is the best player in college football.

“He did something tonight that no one has ever done. If that doesn’t make you the leading candidate, then maybe the Heisman isn’t really for the best player.”

Is his season worthy of the Heisman Trophy? It’s hard to argue against him.

Generally speaking, quarterbacks on national championship contenders have the best chance. Over the last 20 years, however, three players have won it despite theirs teams finishing with three or more losses: Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (2007), Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III (2011) and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson (2016).

“God created me to be tough and get through stuff quickly,” he said. “This was my first concussion to get over, and I did everything they said I needed to do to play and progress daily. It all worked out.

“I try to be as patient as I can in the pocket and let plays open up, but when I see a lane open up, I’m going to be decisive and take it.”

LICHENS ARE NOT KILLING YOUR PLANTS AND TREES

Nature is full of mysteries, and there is a fascinating one just outside in your landscape. We don’t have to look very far to find one of these marvels of creation, the lichen, thriving in our warm, humid, Mississippi climate.

At first glance, the papery or fuzzy, white, gray or green growth might lead us to believe that lichen are just another parasite, working to destroy our landscape trees and ornamentals. Although lichen are often found associated with plants that are dead, dying or declining, we must remember that this is only circumstantial evidence, and the lichen is innocent until proven guilty.

Remember way back (for some of us) in junior high school science class when we first learned the meaning of symbiosis? A symbiotic relationship is one in which two organisms live in close relationship with one another to the benefit of each. Such is the case of the lichen. What appears to be one organism are actually two, an algae and a fungus living together that have formed one body. The algae, a green plant, can make its own food, and in this case, shares with the fungus. The fungus, on the other hand supplies the structure, or thallus, within which the algae lives. Lichen can be found attached to healthy plants or those in dead or dying condition. Although sometimes unsightly, they are not parasitic and do not contribute to the poor quality of a plant.

Believe it or not, lichen is actually beneficial to humans for several reasons. First, they are sensitive to air pollution and are commonly used by researchers to determine the air quality of a region. If lichen thrives in your neighborhood, it’s a good indicator of quality air. Drug companies use lichen substances to make antibiotics. Some lichens make nitrogen in the air more available to other plants.

People eat some lichens but remember a few of them are poisonous! Lichens can also be used to make dye for coloring wool.

It is usually not necessary to treat plants to control lichens. The best practice is to keep landscape plants healthy and growing vigorously. However, for trees and shrubs that lose their leaves in winter (including fruit and nut), tribasic copper sulfate may be used at the rate of 4 teaspoonfuls per gallon of water to remove unwanted lichens. Add a spreader sticker to the spray mix and avoid contact with evergreen plants. Remember to always follow label directions when applying pesticides.

Daniels entered the weekend at +2500 in Heisman Trophy odds and behind multiple players, including Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. Daniels might have to wait to see what Penix, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr do down the stretch. However, he has made a great case to be a favorite going into the final two weeks of the season.

We know one thing; he has definitely impressed his head coach.

“Usually those guys tire out,” Kelly said of his quarterback’s long run. “Smokey the Bear usually jumps on his back at about 30 yards and lactic acid kicks in and they are gone. [Jayden] kept going. He’s a phenomenal athlete. He’s the best playmaker in the country. I’ve watched them all.

“You can say whatever you want, we are 7-3 and whoever else is undefeated. That doesn’t mean anything. What matters is who is the best player, and he is the best player. A night like tonight kind of solidifies that.”

If one was just an observer and in search of that one “Heisman Moment” for Daniels, they certainly got it against Florida. A player who has routinely put the Bayou Bengals on his back, Daniels continues going above and beyond for his program as the Tigers look to close out the season on a positive note.

JD 5’s’ numbers speak for themselves. He’s now up to 3,164 yards and 30 touchdowns passing while adding 918 yards and eight touchdowns rushing. It’s historic and many people are running out of superlatives for the Tigers’ QB1.

He has two games left which are both in Death Valley. One of them against an outmatched Georgia State team who just lost to Appalachian State. With the final game of the regular season, against hated rival Texas A&M who just paid Jimbo Fisher $75 million dollars to not coach for them anymore.

One thing is for certain, if Daniels does not win the Hei5man, he should be invited to New York for the ceremonies. However, if he doesn’t win it would be as shocking as an SEC Official throwing a targeting flag against Alabama while not throwing one on LSU. Either way, he has solidified his legacy in LSU lore and will forever be considered a great tiger!

BYE WEEK FOR TIGERS MEANS “GOODBYE”

College football realists knew 2023 was not going to be a special year for LSU, especially after the embarrassing beatdown in Orlando against Florida State. LSU’s defensive weaknesses and still brewing offensive prowess were exposed for most of that game and much of the anemia continued throughout the rest of the first half of the season,

Recent years have found both LSU and Alabama having a bye week before meeting each other. Nick Saban uses that bye week to buy solutions for Alabama’s problems, real or imagined. We’re not sure what Les Miles, Ed Orgeron or Brian Kelly used that time for, even though all three each won a game against the Tide. But they were close. More ‘Bama wins than not over LSU haven’t been nail-biters.

And that’s the difference. ‘Bama EXPECTS to win. LSU HOPES to win.

Although the 2023 offense now resembles the 2019 LSU Burrow juggernaut, dropped passes, ineffective toss sweeps and underutilization of the tight end keeps it from being memorable - just statistically elite, thanks to the singular skill set of one Jayden Daniels. Daniels is not Joe Burrow and probably never will be but he is the most dominant dual threat college quarterback since Lamar Jackson at Louisville and even more so with his vastly improved passing acumen. No one on the team works as hard as Daniels and he is, without a doubt, the most valuable player for LSU. Daniels has two above average receivers in Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas but they are only similar, not equal, to Burrow’s All-American duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. I doubt Nabers and Thomas will come within sniffing distance of that All Pro pair but I think Thomas will have the better professional career because of his size and toughness.

What LSU lacks is a defensive identity and a defensive leader. Harold Perkins is still an All-American type linebacker but he’s not shown the second year development that LSU’s greatest defensive freshman showed in his sophomore year. Tyrann Mathieu became the most dominant college defensive force in 2011 and 2012 and Perkins was supposed to be on that same track. Not so. Lack of an SEC caliber secondary and SEC caliber defensive coaching staff has spelled doom for the Tigers after their ridiculous second half against a watered-down Alabama squad. But Alabama is still Alabama and home cooking officiating is still a reality in Bryan-Denny Stadium and stupid offensive line play by LSU created roadblocks to stop the Tigers from replicating the first half against Nick Saban’s guys. Add to that the most overrated LSU 5-star defensive recruit in recent memory, Maason Smith, and the Tigers looked like single-ply toilet paper for some of the first half and all of the second half against the Tide. This team can’t tackle, can’t show quickness, can’t protect their flanks or their middle. ‘Bama’s quarterback, Jalen Milroe, tore up the so-called defensive front seven of LSU every time he had a chance and thank God he can’t pass accurately because he overthrew at least one time to a wide open Alabama receiver near or at the goal line.

As bad as Brian Kelly’s attempt at a Southern accent was when hired last year, his defense is even worse. He’s had problems hiring and keeping a defensive line coach and it shows. Defensive coordinator Matt House has yet to earn his paycheck. And Kelly’s rapidly becoming stale narrative is hard to listen to. It’s too early for the former Notre Dame coach to feel any hot seat but that doesn’t mean that a House can’t burn down if the Tigers don’t dominate Florida and Georgia State. The final game - a revenge madhouse with a really overrated head coach - Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher - ends the season which will feature two wannabes for the right to finish third in the SEC West. Meanwhile, Georgia will probably put an end to ‘Bama’s season in the SEC Championship game….again. This isn’t the dominant Georgia team of the past two years but they still have more than Alabama and should prevail.

Next year, the Tigers get to host Oklahoma for the first time. I don’t think I’ll bet my old Okie buddies on this game like I did when they played LSU in 2003 and 2019. Not that Oklahoma can stop anybody good. It’s just that I’m not sure what Kelly will have in the pot in 2024. It will definitely be a step down in the passing game with the graduation of Daniels, receiver Kyren Lacy and the probable losses of juniors Nabers and Thomas to the NFL. 2024 is a huge election year. It will be a huge year for Kelly to prove his hiring was the right move two years ago. Kelly’s future will be determined before Groundhog Day in February. He needs to show much more of a shadow of greatness than he has in 2023 with his offseason moves or he could be staring down not six weeks, but 13 weeks of winter during the summer and fall of the 2024 SEC football season.

PLANTING TIME FOR FRUIT TREES November or anytime during the fall season is a great time to evaluate your existing trees or plant new varieties in your landscape.

It is important, however, to select only those fruit trees that are adapted for the Coast. Chilling hours are very important, since we receive a limited number of them. Chilling hours refers to the number of hours spent below 40 degrees, but above freezing. Fruit trees need chilling hours to successfully produce fruit. The Coast sometimes receives only 350400 chilling hours per season; therefore, select only those varieties that have the lowest chilling hour requirements to help ensure a lot of tasty fruit next year.

Sometimes people want to plant fruit trees simply because they want to try their hand at it. Fruit trees require a lot of maintenance and patience. The Gulf South is a tough place sometimes to produce high quality fruit. Other times homeowners lose their trees to insects or diseases and wish to replace them.

Unless you have an “orchard,” many people have limited space for their fruit trees. Sometimes people will ask, “Can I replant my tree in the same place?”

If you do have another suitable open space, it is best not to replant in the same area. Depending on what killed your tree, pests in the soil may have increased over the years and reached levels that caused the tree’s death. The soil where you removed your dead or dying tree could be contaminated with insects or diseases that could attack and weaken your new, young tree over time. A weakened, declining tree is even more susceptible to winter injury, insects, diseases and drought.

Sometimes people think if they wait a year or two they can then put another fruit tree in the once contaminated area. In fact, it really depends on what soil disease or insect problem was present in the first place. For example, a common root disease on peaches has been found in the soil 35 years after the tree was removed! Pesticides available to homeowners are of limited value to fruit growers when trying to decontaminate problem areas. Fruit trees, however, do require a rigorous spray schedule each year to combat insects and diseases from ruining your crop. The spray program starts during late winter and continues throughout the season.

I encourage you to consult Extension publications for specific information on the fruit trees of your choice. Proper fruit tree selection, planting, fertilizing, and pruning combined with a pest management spray program is essential to a bountiful harvest of your favorite fruit.

Thanksgiving Food for your Pets

Who doesn’t love green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, carved turkey, cranberry sauce and all the other Thanksgiving goodies we are about to indulge in this holiday! And if you have furry, four-legged family members at home, we are sure that there will be more than just hungry human mouths waiting to dive in. Here are some tips on how to share Thanksgiving with your pets!

Our best piece of advice is to set your pet’s Thanksgiving plate first. That means right before you add your cooked green beans to the casserole, before you add pumpkin puree to your pie mix, before you mash the boiled potatoes, set a small amount of those food items to the side. Feel free to add the least seasoned part of the turkey and even a small teaspoon of cranberry sauce to their plate. It is best to separate the food your pet can safely eat before we add the rest of the ingredients to the dish. Dogs should avoid foods that are heavily salted, foods with large amounts of sugar, dairy, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and any kinds of fruit pits. Your pet will be very thankful for the food they get to gobble up because you’ve made sure it is safe!

Now that you have all the safe to eat food for your pet set aside on their plate, there is a way to make that meal last! Try mashing all those ingredients together and then stuffing it into a Kong toy, or a thick rubber chew toy. Once it’s stuffed, throw it in the freezer while you finish cooking dinner. Once dinner is ready to be served, take the frozen stuffed toy out of the freezer and give it to your dog or cat! They now have a fun Thanksgiving treat to focus on while you and your family enjoy your dinner at the table. This especially helps for those pet owners who are used to furry little beggars under the kitchen table!

When you shop this holiday, pick up a container of low sodium chicken broth and a cupcake tin if you don’t already have one. Another trick for your pups and kitties is to fill the cupcake tray three fourths of the way with the chicken broth and then add plain cooked green beans, carrots, pieces of turkey, and pumpkin puree. Put the cupcake tin in the freezer for a few hours and you’ll have your very own Thanksgiving Pet Popsicles! This will also help those pups who may get anxious or overwhelmed with the sound of a doorbell and multiple guests inside the house.

Looking back over the year, there are some success stories that START volunteers are especially proud of.

One of those is Shatzi’s story.

Shatzi was adopted from a large shelter by a World War II veteran with whom he lived for many years. When his dear owner became bedridden. little Shatzi, now 14 years old, stayed by his side. When his owner passed away, there was no one to care for Shatzi.

START found a foster home for this wonderful, loyal little guy where he lived until a family with a big heart adopted him. At 16, Shatzi has lots of energy, loves fo go for walks and socialize with people and other dogs.

Pigeon jumped up on her perch to tell us that when it comes to finding a forever home, sometimes the third one is the charm.

After two homes did not work out,Pigeon was back with us. As cheerful and sweet as ever, she settled back into the cat room and began making friends with START volunteers and visitors who came to see the cats for adoption. Even though she was now 6 years old, we felt there was a forever home waiting for her. Before long our Pigeon found that wonderful home where she has become a cherished family member.
