KELLY’S INABILITY TO STRUCTURE DEFENSES SHOWING UP

The LSU Tigers still have six games to play this year but it really won’t matter when their defense reflects the same attitude that the United States shows along its border with Mexico. It began with the blaming of a crop of less than stellar defensive backs but the entire defense except for one or two players is performing at a subpar SEC level.

Kelly’s defense under Matt House looks like a Mad House with little or no defensive end containment, little quickness at any position and a total lack of fundamental tackling skills. The so-called Jack position has done NOTHING to jack up opposing offenses as Florida State, Arkansas and Ole Miss showed in the first five contests this year. A game in Missouri will be a nail biter and the way Auburn showed its character against an overrated Georgia team means the LSU Tigers could be under .500 before the Army game. Army’s slogan is “Be All That You Can Be”, a message that is all but lost on a team of LSU defensive players with no apparent leader and little spine. Combine that formula with the school’s inane desire to prepare Harold Perkins for a pro career a year or two away, a Les Miles-inspired quasi-onside kick against Ole Miss when LSU had the Rebels and Lane Kiffen right where they wanted them and a stubborn desire for Kelly to insist on softer than Charmin coverage by the secondary and 2023 will rival 2020 for sheer incompetence and fan dissatisfaction.

It’s too bad because a brilliant quarterback talent is being wasted this year. Jayden Daniels has been the best player under center for LSU in the past quarter century except for Joe Burrow. He has three receivers who are a level below the Chase/Jefferson/Marshall awesome threesome five years ago but whose skills along with Daniels’ are more than enough to have LSU at 4 and 1 or even undefeated if there were any indications their defensive-minded brothers had the stones or resemblance of a traditional LSU defensive unit.

Kelly had to depend on the Luck o’ the Irish to stay close to Ole Miss last Saturday even with another all conference performance by Daniels. Penalties and lack of discipline by Ole Miss allowed LSU to catch and surpass Mississippi in the second half. But this fire sale of a defense shows even less discipline, ability to learn on the job or progress in the aggressiveness and strength departments week after week. There’s no doubt Alabama will embarrass this team next month in Tuscaloosa and they probably will lose to Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M at home. In a year of down financial expectations, Tiger fans shouldn’t be tempted to spend thousands of rapidly declining dollars to watch a team and a program that doesn’t deserve their support in a watered-down postseason. Kelly hasn’t made many dumb mistakes; his roster has been serviceable with a few good portal transfers and the blooming of a couple of true freshmen on this 2023 squad. He deserves another year to recruit the type of defensive players LSU traditionally signs and to implement a defensive playbook that doesn’t sacrifice wokeness for whup-ass. The league is laughing at House and LSU right now and who can blame them?

FALL LAWNCARE ADVICE

The recent weather has been very stressful on lawns in South Louisiana and throughout the surrounding region. It has exacerbated a slew of other environmental stresses to the point where many home lawns have turned brown with some bermudagrass lawns going dormant. As the official start of fall occurs this month it’s important to discuss the home lawn and a few timely maintenance steps that will help keep it happy.

The fall season is an important time in the life of your lawn grass. As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, the lawn will start to prepare itself for the oncoming dormant season. Eventually, growth will slow down before it goes completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process.

Provide supplemental irrigation if it doesn’t rain for the week. Aim for the sprinklers to shut off as the sun is coming up. If that isn’t possible then run them in the AM hours. Water for a long period of time to encourage deeper penetration. The soil should be allowed to dry completely before another irrigation event is scheduled. Deep and infrequent waterings are key to producing a well established root system in the home lawn.

Continue mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time. You also should be using a sharp mowing blade. It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass, but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage.

Be careful with fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen makes plants grow and lawns are naturally slowing down and preparing for dormancy. Fertilizing too late in the year with a high nitrogen fertilizer is counterproductive. However, these winterizer products contain a little extra potassium which helps the plant deal with cold weather. Soils that are deficient in potassium can be amended with a product called muriate of potash (0-0-60). To determine if you need to supplement this nutrient, take and submit a soil sample to the LSU Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab. If potassium is deficient, they will provide a muriate of potash recommendation to offset the deficiency.

Another reason why it’s not recommended to apply nitrogen at the end of the season is because can spread lawn disease. Typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including large patch (brown patch). In fact, you should be very observant in the fall so that lawn disease problems can be caught early. Large patch starts out as small dead areas that increase in size overnight especially during rainy periods or stretches of humid weather. Apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: azoxystrobin, propiconazole, myclobutanil. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home. Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: BioAdvanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s DiseaseX. Make sure to treat the entire yard to control the disease and prevent other areas from becoming infected.

Lastly, think about weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that grow during the fall and winter months. Prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension (dithiopyr). It can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II. For existing weeds that are already growing in the lawn you can use Weed Free Zone and atrazine to manage. Atrazine will provide not only post emergent control, but it also has some pre-emergent properties. Remember to read and follow label instructions before applying a pesticide.

Tony’s Take

IT’S TIME FOR THE SAINTS TO DRAFT A QUARTERBACK

It’s a sad state of affairs when a team’s pysche will not allow them to delve into the college talent pool and find an inspiring-type quarterback to lead their franchise. Only two men in 56 years have been above average signal callers for the Saints; Archie Manning and Drew Brees. Every other QB has been, at best, a maybe for a team that should feature that position more than they’ve ever shown. They’ve stuck too long with journeymen and has-beens and for a town that Care Forgot, the Saints front office apparently could Care Less about getting the right person in position.

Now the Saints are playing pathetic and laying eggs. The Saints seem to be more smitten with front office dealings than dealing with the reality that even Saints fans could finally get tired of what has become less than a dog and pony show in the Superdome. You can only put so much lipstick on a pig and the Saints are more sows than spectacular. There’s too much talk about Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas and the litany is getting old.

In 6th grade Science students have been studying “why do things sometimes get damaged when they hit each other?” Students participated in labs each day and checked to see how much force is needed to change the shape of an object.

When a team’s last great quarterback came from the college game during the presidency of Richard Nixon, it’s time to change the narrative. You can blame ownership, the front office and the stubbornness of Shaun Peyton equally. The teams that change quarterbacks and maintain some semblance of postseason integrity show it can be done. Dallas and San Francisco remain viable and active, especially the 49ers with Mr. Irrelevant of 2022, Brock Purdy, leading the way for the 4 and 0 NIners. Oh.... they also have a front office team, not a one-man numbers man, and are willing to admit their mistakes and move on. That’s never been the case for New Orleans and 2023 will prove that the times have finally caught up with this club.

But when you have a fan base that responds, Pavlov style, to the word “Saints”, it really doesn’t matter what the product looks like on the field. The Faithful will endure crime, a decaying city and other hardships just to dress up like a Pope or Whistle and spend their Sundays cheering for what should be more than a dream. But right now it is a dream and Mrs. Benson’s ample millions is not enough. It takes a “see change and a sea change and the Saints front office has always been myopic about viewing what their fandom needs.

We had labs for four days checking to see how much force you need to change the shape of an object.

Buras Man Arrested For Crab Trap Theft in Plaquemines Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested a Buras man for alleged commercial crab trap violations in Plaquemines Parish on Sept. 25.

Agents arrested Andrew Tran, 30, for theft of crab traps, destruction of crap traps, and possession of untagged crab traps. He was booked into the Plaquemines Parish Jail.

Agents received information about Tran stealing crab traps and then later using the trap with his identification as his own trap. Agents investigated this claim, made contact with Tran, and found him in possession of two untagged crab traps.

After further investigation, agents determined that Tran stole the untagged traps in his possession and was found to have stolen other traps and then claiming them to be his own.

Theft of crab traps, destruction of crab traps and possession of untagged crab traps bring up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense.

In addition to all other penalties for the first violation, the department shall suspend or revoke the violator’s crab trap gear license for a period of one year from the date of the conviction and no new crab trap gear license shall be issued to the violator during the period of suspension or revocation. During the period in which the violator’s license is suspended or revoked, the violator may be present on a vessel commercially harvesting or processing crabs only if that vessel is equipped with and is actively using a vessel monitoring system accessible to the department.

Also if convicted, the violator shall be sentenced to perform up to 40 hours of community service.

The case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution.

Case agents are Lt. Adam Young, Sgt. Villere Reggio, Corporal Austin Landry, and Agent Josh Schilling.

Brock Purdy might have been Mr. Irrelevant in 2022 but he turned it around, thanks in part to the fragility of Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance at quarterback for San Francisco. Purdy is now one of the darlings of the NFL and is well on his way to leading the Niners back to the Super Bowl. Look closely. Is there a Super Bowl quality quarterback in New Orleans? Yes, but Peyton and Eli are both retired. -0-

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries

LDWF Agent Named National Boating Officer of the Year

A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agent was recently named the 2023 National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Boating Officer of the Year.

Lt. Jason Russo, of Metairie and a 21-year veteran with the LDWF Enforcement Division, was honored with the national NASBLA award for his continuous dedication to enforcing boating safety laws and educating the public at NASBLA’s annual conference on Sept. 21. Lt. Russo is the first agent from Louisiana to win this national boating officer award.

“Lt. Russo is very deserving of this national boating safety award. He has always done a great job of enforcing boating safety laws and teaching boating safety classes to the public,” said Col. Rachel Zechenelly, head of the Enforcement Division. “Lt. Russo is also a leader in his region as he helps mentor younger agents especially when it comes to boating safety education and patrol.”

Lt. Russo has been a boating safety instructor for over 18 years teaching safe boating classes. His training includes successful completion of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Marine Patrol Officer’s course, FLETC Marine Law Enforcement Training Program, NASBLA’s Level I Boating Incident Investigation (BII) course, NASBLA’s Level II BII Reconstruction course, and he serves as an instructor for NASBLA’s Level I BII course and its Officer Water Survival course. Lt. Russo has demonstrated leadership when it comes to boating safety as four of the agents he directly supervises have received safe boating awards in the past six years. His commitment to enforcing boating safety laws and educating the public on boating safety in the field have benefited the LDWF Enforcement Division and the people that he serves. Lt. Russo was awarded with the NASBLA Southern Region Officer of the Year award this past June.

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope all is going well with you all. We have had both good and setbacks. My granddaughter shattered her ACL at dance practice the Thursday before their first home football game. Had surgery to rebuild the following Tuesday(pulled & stretched what they needed from her upper thigh). They started her physical therapy the very next day. Needless to say she did not go to school Wed., Thurs., or Fri. But, she was at the football game, since is an officer of the school’s dance team. She attends every practice, sitting on the sidelines watching and wishing she could dance. She has been to school everyday using a wheelchair but does go to therapy 3 days a week. This past Wed. she was told by her surgeon that now she can start using the crutches more and putting more weight on her leg. He also said she has a long way to go, nine more months of physical and conditioning therapy for that ACL. We are so Blessed and Thankful to have the support team she has from her coaches, doctor, PA, and all the therapists that have been working with her at the Ochsner Andrews Sports Medicine. It has been difficult, but she is making progress! NOW for good news along with this. She has been chosen as one of the Senior Homecoming Maids! Can hardly wait to see her walk across the field. She may still be wearing the brace but she’ll have her big brother by her side, escorting and helping her. What a Senior Year she is having!

Ok, now that I have relieved some of my grandmotherly stress (hate seeing my baby girl hurting), let me tell you a little about this project

Yes, I am on that tea cup kick again! I just love these, and have painted extras of this one for the AOL High School craft show in November. The gingerbread boy actually sits above the tea cup and the snowflakes are also separate pieces. I will be doing several 3 D pieces this year for the holidays. I really like the gold trim at the top of the cup. It kind of reminds me of my grandmother’s tea set, all the pieces were edged on gold colored trim. He stands alone, no propping him against anything. I really think he will be a happy addition to everyone’s holiday decorating. The original designer of this did not add a nose or mouth. Of course, that can be added if someone would like to. If you are in or around the Marrero area on Sat. 11 November stop by Academy of Our Lady between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and check out the different crafters that will be there. Don’t forget to stop by my booth to say hi and let me know that you saw my column in the paper. Might just have a little “Thank You” especially for you!

Well, that’s it for this time. Need to finish cutting the grass before I visit my granddaughter and do more painting. So....what will your next project be?

Mine......Thanksgiving and Christmas are on my painting table! It will be lots of fun!

METRO PLUS FISHING REPORT

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 10.07.21

After only getting rat reds, some hard head cats and a very small flounder it was a blessing to find this beautiful redfish. We are allowed 1 over 27 and this one at 29 inches was coming home with us. We were finally on the board.

Our day quickly turned into a problem day. We wanted keepers. Our fish were too big. Actually an unusual fishing problem. We started throwing our bigger ones back and putting nothing in the fish box.

The action was endless but the box was not getting full. I could not leave fish to find fish. They were having too much fun.

As the tide turned we decided to go looking for something smaller. This was a smaller one at 26 inches. Little did we know it would be our smallest keeper redfish of the day. Our quest for slots reds was not going good. The other 2 boats had already gone in and we were still fishing. I  hit the river looking for something different.

Different we soon found. This black drum gave him what he thought was his hardest fight of the day. The reds although slightly bigger did not do battle like this stubborn hog did.

This was the arm breaker time for a beer fish of the day. Once it got hooked the boat ride started. The fish turned the boat and pulled the power poles loose. We were now fighting this in the river dodging a container ship. Bob’s arms were now burning. The black drum was nothing compared to this monster. Bob deserved  a rest and a cold beer. Once done he made another cast and hooked a 4 to 5 foot shark that gave him another even harder fight but quickly bit through the line. To say we has a hard fought action filled day was an understatement.

Red snapper is now open in state waters 7 days a week at 4 fish per person until further notice.

Life is Good.

Our take for the day was 7 reds with the biggest at 29 inches and the smallest at 26 inches. We had a 26.5 and 2 at 27 and 2 others just overand 2 sheepshead  totaling 65.7 pounds.

STINK BUGS IN YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN

One of the most damaging and common insect pests in late summer and fall gardens are stink bugs. A crop of vegetables can be damaged so severely by heavy infestations of stink bugs that the crop can be ruined. There are several key reasons that stink bugs are such a problem in late season vegetable gardens.

First, stink bugs have several generations each year, increasing their numbers with each generation. This is the reason that there are heavier numbers of stink bugs in the late summer than there were earlier in the year. Second, stink bugs reproduce on many different major row crops and weeds. After these crops mature the stink bug adults are trying to find another suitable host. Stink bugs are strong fliers and this makes it easy for them to move in where they feel comfortable. Third, stink bugs are fruit and seed feeders who focus their feeding on the part of the plant that we, as humans, like to harvest and eat as well.

The most common stink bug species that we have to deal with here in south Mississippi is Green Stink bugs, Southern Green Stink bugs, and Brown Stink bugs. The immature stink bugs known as nymphs can cause the same damage as the adults. The nymphs look similar to the adults as far as shape but the color can vary based on their stage of development. Another bug that can cause the same damage as the stink bug is the Leaf Footed Bug. They are larger and have an elongated body with leaf shaped segments on their hind legs.

Using an effective insecticide, such as products containing bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, gamma-cyhalothrin, permethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin or malathion, is the best way to get rid of this pest problem. (Make sure and use the pesticide that is labeled for your particular crop.) Most likely you will have to tr eat several times for stink bugs or leaf footed bugs because these unwelcomed bugs will continue to visit as long as there is a crop there that they like. Be sure to always read the label carefully and follow the directions because the LABEL IS THE LAW!

Falling for Furry Friends: Top Tips for Fall Pet Care

As the leaves start to turn golden and the air grows crisper, there’s no denying that fall is upon us. While we humans relish in cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes, our furry friends have their own set of needs during this season. Just like us, pets can benefit from some extra care during the fall months to keep them safe and healthy. So, let’s dive into some fun and informative tips for fall pet care.

While your pets already come equipped with fur coats, some of them might need a little extra warmth as the temperatures drop. Small dogs and those with short coats can get chilly, so consider getting them a stylish pet sweater or jacket. Not only will they look adorable, but they’ll also stay toasty on those brisk autumn walks.

2. Keep the Leaves at Bay:

Falling leaves can be irresistible playthings for pets, but some types of leaves can be toxic. Keep an eye out for leaves from cherry, apple, and maple trees, which can be harmful if ingested. Regularly clean up your yard and take extra care during walks to ensure your pets don’t munch on anything they shouldn’t.

3. Adjust Your Walk Schedule:

The days are getting shorter, which means less daylight for those after-work walks. Invest in reflective gear for both you and your pet to stay visible in low light conditions. If you find yourself walking in the dark often, consider a LED collar or leash to keep your pet safe.

4. Keep Pests at Bay:

Ticks and fleas can still be active in the fall, so continue your pet’s regular parasite prevention regimen. Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your pet is protected, and check them regularly for any unwanted guests.

5. Maintain a Healthy Diet:

Just like us, pets may be tempted by the bounty of fall treats. While a small taste of pumpkin is usually harmless, avoid feeding them sugary snacks and stick to their regular diet. If you’re unsure about what’s safe for your pet, consult your vet for advice.

6. Plan for Halloween: Halloween can be a blast, but it can also be stressful for pets. Keep your pets indoors and in a quiet, secure room during trick-or-treating to avoid escape attempts. Also, ensure your pet’s costume is safe and comfortable if you choose to dress them up.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your pets have a safe and enjoyable fall season. Embrace the changing colors, cooler weather and create wonderful memories with your furry companions. Happy fall, pet lovers!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Batman is a very playful 9 yr old Tuxedo and well deserving of a forever home where he can live out his best life. He’s overcoming health issues with a daily blood pressure medication plus his soft canned food diet from dental work has him on the right track. He’s lost his peripheral vision in the left eye due to high blood pressure but it doesn’t stop him from playing like a kitten, eating or finding his way around! Batman’s extremely affectionate, must be near you at all times, follows like a pup and you’ll never nap or sleep in bed alone because he’ll be right on side of you! Batman must be touching when next to you which is quite comforting. He’s very laid back with lots of love and affection to give a new family. After 2 months time now with his foster mom, she’s recognized a home with no other pets would be the most ideal situation for Batman. He definitely prefers one on one time. His passive personality brings out anxiety and stress when around other animals which seemed to transpire after diagnosed with Hypertension. A new human/s home during the day is even more purrfect for him to bond, play, keep company and to have his small meals throughout day! He’s also a professional Biscuit maker when cuddled up to a cozy blanket.

Batman was surrendered to us in July 2023 due to his previous owner falling ill and becoming unable to care for him. He was orignally rescued by S.T.A.R.T. in May of 2017 and adopted out through our organization. So when his owner became unable to take care of Batman, she reached out to us to help him find a new home. Please open your heart and home to an amazing cuddly player and receive some major love in return!
