Tony’s Take THANK THE LORD IT’S NOVEMBER!
October is my favorite month of the year except during Presidential elections, when the hyperbole and political minutiae turns my stomach instead of the leaves a yellowish/brownish hue. Whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris wins, it will be another survival season for most of the country.
Being the optimist I am, rioting and violence will not be a factor in this post-election autumn. Instead, we will gird our loins in anticipation of The Donald II or Harris the Harrassed. We pretty much know Trump’s record and most of it has brought prosperity and stabilization to the country. Trump has his many warts but he answers most of our questions; Harris either doesn’t understand what constitutes a question or just reacts to what her more intelligent and focused handlers tell her to do. Harris spews so much word salad that Salad Station has probably offered her at least a dozen franchises around the country. If Harris wins, prepared to be bored and b.s’ed for her term in office. Trump certainly has an affinity for the after product of a bull’s digestive system but he will bring an order to conditions that have the vast majority upset in varying degrees. And he certainly won’t be boring. And the country will survive and grow.
Attending a “JOY” event for Harris is like letting a men’s civic club plan Mardi Gras. Invitations should say “Attendance For More Than 30 Minutes Could Be Hazardous to Your Health.” The only joy at a Harris event is the type found under the kitchen sink. But that “joy” cannot erase the fact that the lightest of lightweights the Democrats have ever offered up in the fall has nothing under that phony laugh but a disingenuous character that reeks of desperation after a despicable move to replace Joe Biden. Sounds like a plan to you? This is what you wind up with when Hate is your navigator.
And Bruce Springsteen? Supporting Kamala Harris means he’s supporting a Jungleland for the future and a Badlands of federal policy. He tells folks I’m On Fire for Harris but he conveniently forgets that his Glory Days began with songs from east Jersey....sort of a New York City Serenade. Bruce...you were Born In the USA with values not offered under Harris. If you continue to forget the lessons learned in your birthplace....as you call it, My Hometown, and continue down Thunder Road with No Surrender, Racing In the Street, you will wind up with a Hungry Heart. Trump is Tougher Than The Rest and tangling with his people is like Dancing In The Dark. Trump was Born To Run; Harris doesn’t have the Human Touch to invigorate her base. What will you do if Harris asks you “If I Should Fall Behind?”
Musically, you’ll probably wind up on a Downbeat Train, no one left to respond when you implore them to ”Cover Me” and you’ll find your songs less and less on FM....sort of in a Radio Nowhere.
There will be no police state nor a wholesale shredding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We will make it through the next four years, hopefully finding acceptable leadership that neither extreme will be able to cripple as the 2028 election cycle approaches. I will be 84 then but no 1984 for this war baby. I should be finally retired but I’ll still find a way to publish my views (and continue to have access to the LSU Press Box during the football season).
My final word: VOTE!! (and get off your goddam electronic devices and get a life again.)

IT’S TIME TO PLANT COOL-SEASON BEDDING PLANTS.
November makes a good calendar reference point for the start of the cool season throughout Louisiana and the southern portion of the Southeastern United States. Many of the plants that are used in landscape horticulture evolved in different climates throughout the world. Some of those plants came to be in regions further from the equator where summers are much shorter and not quite as warm. Generally, we refer to these types of plants as cool-season plants because we plant them to perform during our cooler months. You not only see it in ornamentals but also herb and vegetable plants as well.
Cool-season bedding plants enjoy the mild temps and cooler nights experienced in the fall, winter, and spring months. Many will tolerate colder temperatures down into the 20s with little to no issues. Most bloom throughout the fall and then climax in late winter/early spring as the days begin to warm. Once daily temperatures increase significantly in May, they generally fade out as the weather turns warm.
Nurseries and garden centers offer a multitude of cool-season bedding plant options this time of year. Transplants or “starts” are established plants starting to bloom in small containers meant to be planted so that they provide color right away. Jumbo 6-pack flats provide the gardener with 36 small plants whereas a 4-inch flat provides 18 slightly larger plants. I like Jumbo 6-pack flats early in the season because you get more plants and have more time to allow them to grow and mature. Later in the season, I look for larger starts to maximize their impact in a shorter amount of time.
Some cool-season bedding plants are relatively easy to grow from seed and may be directly sown into planting beds now. Remove vegetation from the planting area by any means available such as herbicide or hand cultivation. Add a layer of decomposed organic material (homemade compost or a commercial compost product) and mix it into the root zone. Smooth the planting bed out with a garden rake to make an even planting surface. Moisten the top layer with water and sown seeds as directed. Take notes on the planting date and variety used. Follow up with irrigation as seeds germinate and grow into small plants. Once true leaves appear, apply a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate to provide balanced nutrition. Cool-season bedding plants like alyssum, annual phlox, bluebonnets, calendula, larkspur, nasturtium, poppies, and violas are commonly grown from seed in the flower garden even though you can find them as starts as well.
Starts are planted similarly. Prepare the planting bed in the same manner, yet instead of sowing seeds, you will be transplanting small plants. Remove plants from containers and lay in the planting bed as desired. Review the layout and start planting the starts into the soil. Add a mulch product to cover the soil between plants and thoroughly water everything in. Follow up with irrigation while the new plants establish root systems and start growing in the new area. After 3-4 weeks after planting add a complete fertilizer product at the labeled rate to supply balanced nutrition to the young plants. Dianthus, pansies, petunias, and snapdragons are some of the most popular cool-season bedding plants available in the trade. If you are looking for a certain color or series, start early. As the season unfolds, inventories will become depleted leaving fewer options for the home gardener. Whether an experienced gardener or just getting started, now is the time to plant cool-season bedding plants in the garden. Go with an old favorite or try something new by making a trip out to the garden center and see what options you have available to you.

Can you believe October is nearly over?! Thanksgiving and Christmas are upon us. I went to Michael’s over the weekend, I hadn’t been there since surgery on my Achilles Tendon in early July. WOW! Almost no Halloween decoration, very little Thanksgiving, lots of Christmas. I had gone to Hobby Lobby the Wednesday before and they had a better selection of Thanksgiving and loads more Christmas but no Halloween. But the good thing is I am able to get around better than before and can now drive myself to Physical Therapy.
By Paula Johnson
But, let’s get to today’s project. I found this haunted house (believe it or not) at Dollar Tree! Of course the wood is not the best but I missed some Deco Art Sealer with my first base coat color and sanded the roughness off. My brush wasn’t too happy with the texture of the wood but after a good sanding it was fine. I applied the second coat of black, let that dry and thought it awhile. The windows are cut out so I can either use a 14” circle as a moon or block the windows with a square board. Let’s use imaginations, a different creature in each window, a werewolf, skeleton, dracula, a witch, whatever. I have to get my background board tomorrow before physical therapy. But, I do have some of the outside of the house done! I painted the roof and stenciled on the bricks with Lavender also. I basically shaded the ghosts on the house with white. I want to put one more on the top floor. Playing around with the idea of its head peeking thru the bricks. Think I will go with the round board painted as the moon right behind the house. Sure wish I had that board now so I could finish this and show you. But it is what it is. Hope you have a Safe and Happy Halloween!
So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, thankfully we have some really good high school football being played lately. Although, most think that the sun is set in Baton Rouge, I can assure you that the only coach who should be fired is in New Orleans.
The Saints are just soooo bad right now! The defense is trying but the offense has no direction without a competent back-up quarterback. That is solely on Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen whom I will gladly post a FIRE DENNIS ALLEN picture with my articles until it is done. However, he is not the only one, I also believe it is time for Loomis to either move up or step aside in the Saints organization. He is clearly on auto-pilot and has no real concerns for this team, the city or the state that it sits home in. The bags are about to come back out and this is early 80’s AINTS bad!
Now, we are moving up to the Baton Rouge area where we have a different situation. Sure, they suffered a horrendous 2nd half collapse on the road against an average yet lucky SEC team. I will say here and now that NO TEAM in the conference will end the year unblemished and LSU will still be near the top of the standings. The situations we have in the Red Stick are not coaching decisions but instead poor player decisions. The coach does not miss 2 field goals, botch a field goal snap or make 3 disastrous interceptions. The plan was in place but the players, yes, the ones on all this NIL money did not execute properly.
The defense was consistently put in bad spots on the field and having to defend against enormous odds. In what should have been a 20-point lead was only 10 and then had zero time to regroup or rest due to bad decision making by the quarterback. Yes, I know his name but no I will not say it since due to those who don’t like holding college players responsible for their actions and might get upset. With all that said, the goal is still in front and take the bye week to get healthy, reassess the team and get ready for the rest of the schedule where your 3 of your final 4 games are at home with the one away game being the friendly confines of Gainesville, Florida! This season reminds me of 2007, when a 2 loss LSU team won the conference title in route to a national title. Now, I am not saying that this team can run the table and win one but I do know they have the capability to make a run at it if refocusing and getting in the playoffs.
One thing is for sure, I have a million more confidence in LSU doing what it needs to do to correct the situation than the Saints.

One of the greatest football stories ever written was the Grantland Rice story about Notre Dame comparing the biblical Four Horseman of the Apocalypse to the four members of the Notre Dame football backfield in 1924.
Fast forward a century, where the SEC forms the crest of a cyclone of awesome college football reorganization. Instead of four horsemen, the SEC offers a dozen powerful backfields along with destiny-changing linemen, defensive backs and receivers.
In no particular order comes the vengence of Vanderbilt, long hammered under the tongs of powerful opponents but this year showing their mettle. South Carolina, where the Gamecocks have shown their gaminess in epic contests among giants in their field. Ole Miss, where firepower from the wizard of Offensive Gambling, Lane Kiffen, nearly rose to the top of the field. Oklahoma, where Sooner pride took a while to adjust to a new nation of pigskin progress. Alabama, where assumed dominance was faced off by many from the new league. Tennesseee, whose recent hubris saw its position challenged time and again. Texas A&M, whose annual quixotic adventures forged a more powerful foe. Georgia, experiencing the same challenges as Alabama. Arkansas, whose primal Calling of the Hogs placed fear in even the most imposing foe. Missouri, struggling to dominate, became a stronger team because of the contests they entered throughout the season. Texas, whose recent reincarnation made them a powerful foe to challenge. And LSU, where losses of key players created an atmosphere akin to an epiphany as they rose to the moment time and again.
A baker’s dozen. Don’t sit back on Kentucky, showing more tendencies towards being as much of a football powerhouse as their more famous basketball brothers.
Two of the remaining three SEC teams have been national champions several times in the past 20
continued from Just Sports, pg 5 years and the other was ranked number one in the nation ten years ago at midseason. They, too, will return to the days of the Horsemen in due time.
What the nation will not see is more than four, perhaps five of these teams, face off in the first of a 12team national playoff showdown. Only one will be allowed to be ranked among the top five but one can only believe that three more will be placed within the top ten. But that is a story to be told when the winds of autumn begin to take on the chill of early winter. And the SEC creates the cyclone for the rest of the nation to view as the field narrows to two teams. Don’t bet against both of these teams being from the SEC.

PREPARING POTTED PLANTS FOR COLDER WEATHER
It is beginning to cool off outside which means it’s time to start taking steps to prepare for cold nights! One of these steps is bringing in your potted/patio plants when it gets in the 50s or lower. There are several steps to bringing in your plants you can take to reduce stress not only for your plants but for you as well. One of the first is to place your plants in the shade for two weeks before bringing them inside your home, this will help prevent leaf drop when making the change in environments.
Make sure you trim any dead, unhealthy, or leggy growth from the plant, this is also a great time to repot your plant if it is outgrowing its pot or if you simply want to use a different pot.
Another great step would be to rinse your plant of any dust, dirt, or bugs while also giving it a good deep watering before bringing them inside, once inside you won’t need to water them as much being that most plants don’t need as much water as they needed outside.
You’ll need to make sure your plant is getting the right amount of sunlight and air circulation while indoors. If you must leave it where it could still possibly freeze make sure not to use thin plastic nursery pots, these pots do not insulate the roots well, making it easier to freeze and thaw which can damage the plant.

CONTROLLING SMALL FLIES IN THE HOME
Many people may have been dealing with small flies lately. There are several species of small, gnat-sized flies that may occur in homes or offices and become a real nuisance. They include fruit flies, phorid flies, moth flies, and fungus gnats and most often occur briefly in our homes.
Fruit flies often breed in decaying fruit or vegetables as well as in other types of decaying organic matter. They are often seen flying about overripe ba-nanas, tomatoes, empty juice or wine bottles, or similar items. These small flies can reproduce quite successfully in the few drops of liquid in the bottom of empty container.
Phorid flies breed in a wide range of decaying organic matter, including decaying vegetable matter or meat, animal feces, and many other sources. They are sometimes referred to as drain flies because the larvae of some species feed on the organic scum that accumulates inside drain pipes and garbage disposals. Phorids can also breed in the residue inside garbage cans that are not cleaned frequently and in moist food residues that accumulate under and around appli-ances.
Moth flies are also called drain flies or sewage gnats and may be seen resting on bathroom or kitchen walls near the drain from which they probably emerged. The larvae breed in sewage and other organic accumulations in drain pipes from which adults emerge.
Fungus gnats occur indoors where houseplants are kept. The larvae breed in the potting media, feeding on fungi growing on the roots of the plants as well as on the roots themselves. These small flies do not bite, but when nu-merous, can become a nuisance by hovering around the TV, computer monitor, or other light sources in darkened rooms. The key to controlling these pests is to identify their breeding source which can be any type of organic matter.
Routine sanitation helps prevent infestations which includes: take out garbage regularly; clean up any spilled food or garbage; dispose of any fruits or vegetables that are overripe or rotten; repair leaks and regularly empty and clean drain pans under appliances; use properly labeled algaecides to prevent accumulations of algae in drain pans; avoid overwatering houseplants and emp-ty and clean drain saucers regularly; clean drains regularly with an appropriate-ly labeled microbial drain cleaner that can be purchased online or found locally.
When infestations of small flies occur, the best way to control them is to find and eliminate their breeding source, and it helps to be able to identify the kind of flies involved.
LOUISIANA SPCA’S 2ND ANNUAL CARNIVAL EVENT
It is a part of our mission to keep pet families together and protected! One of the best ways to conquer that is by making sure the pets in our community are up to date on their vaccinations. On Saturday, November 9th, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, we will be having a discounted Vaccine Drive specifically for our Plaquemines Parish residents! This event will take place at the LASPCA’s Plaquemines Parish Campus at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd., Belle Chasse, LA 70037. If you missed our last Vaccination Clinic, you don’t want to miss this one!
During this $30 Vaccination event, we will have all Core Vaccines with Rabies tags and Microchips included. Dogs will be vaccinated against Rabies, DHPP (distemper, hepatitis/ adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, and Bordetella. Cats will be vaccinated against Rabies and FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia).
While attending the event, you can get more information about our Community Clinic and the services provided, including spay/neuter surgery, annual wellness exams, preventative medication, and more. Note that all dogs MUST be on a leash and all cats in a carrier.
Protect your pets and get all the core canine/feline vaccines, Rabies Tag and license, and a microchip at one location. No appointments are needed.
If you are interested in adopting a pet from the Louisiana SPCA, now is the time! Both our New Orleans are Plaquemines Parish campuses are completely full! Even if you can’t open your home right now, you can still help! Please open your hearts by fostering, spreading the word, or donating to help sponsor adoption fees and provide the daily care that the hundreds of animals who depend on us need.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Can Cats and Dogs be Friends?
We have all heard the expression “to fight like cats and dogs.” We get a mental picture of an ongoing struggle between two people who, no matter what, cannot get along with each other. The same can be true of our pets if we do not socialize them properly.
We often meet people who say that their dog would never tolerate having a cat in the house. And there are those who say their cat hates dogs. However, if pet owners begin early enough to socialize their pets, dogs and cats can get along well. They can even be best friends.
Can a little kitten rescued from the street find happiness in a home with a St. Bernard? Yes! Our pets can teach us a lesson about getting along with each other and not fighting like cats and dogs.
