It was 1967, the Year of the Summer of Love, the greatly promoted season of the zenith of Hippyism in San Francisco. Guys and gals of my age had been moving away from original rock and roll and, influenced by folk groups such as The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary and The Limelighters and the social issue comedians of that era, including Lenny Bruce and Stan Freberg, began to embrace Big Brother and the Holding Company and Moby Grape, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and finally, the

I was pretty much in the middle of this era. Born and raised a proud and defiant San Franciscan, a different animal from the animals who have ruined that city for the past 30 years, I had already been hired five years earlier, still in high school in Los Angeles, as the youngest person ever employed by The New York Times. Following a college career which included 2 1/2 years at LSU, a life-changing period for the son of a South Louisianian and a second generation San Francisco mother, I had the extremely rare educational mix and experience to live and understand both the liberalism of my childhood home and the warmth and unique cultural pool of the Deep South, notably South Louisiana.

I went to high school with Marilyn McCoo of The Fifth Dimension and was a classmate and friend of Jeff(rey) Tambor, the movie and television actor. None of this made much of an impression on me. Until 1967.

I had secured a job at the NBC television affiliate in San Francisco, KRON-TV, owned by one of the two local morning newspapers we had (remember those? We had four daily newspapers in those days). I was the receptionist in an office so spartan it did not attract any attention from the Mission Street address in downtown San Fran, an area now known as SOMA (South of Market Street), the city’s Canal Street counterpart. I was a college senior in radio/t.v., living on sponge cake with my new bride, Hilda (still together!) and working 20 hours a week after classes. It was a chance to act as gatekeeper and information dispenser for the station, my desk just feet away from a front door that was nearly always kept open as KRON’s physical appearance was the least attractive of the three network affiliates in the city at the time and it was the only way management could figure how to attract people inside.

One of those guests was Stan Freberg, the great comedian and commercial spokesman from the ‘50s, 60’s and early 70’s, whose work I inhaled. I recognized him immediately when he came to the station, passed it up, when whistled him down to turn around and come in.

I immediately asked him for a job with his creative team but Freberg worked nearly a cappella and my time with him was too brief for more of an interview. Disappointment from elation was soon forgotten in my daily routine. I got to meet many stars and dignitaries of the era and even caught a break during the 1967 civil rights demonstrations when NBC hired me as an overnight film courier to be at the station as a liaison between the station and the action in the streets.

The star of “Three’s Company” and the blonde in the convertible in “American Graffiti”, Suzanne Somers lived an extraordinary life as a fitness guru, author and actress. The daughter of an ordinary San Bruno couple, Suzanne was more of a San Franciscan than I. Rest in peace, sweetie.

The Extension office phoneline and email account are currently being inundated with concerns about landscape trees in decline. In fact, when driving around the area you can see common landscape trees like arborvitae, crapemyrtle, Leyland cypress, magnolia, and pine all suffering from the severe environmental conditions over the past several years with the drought of 2023 causing some to decline to the point of no return.

Trees are the largest plant organisms in our home landscape and because of Will Afton that they require larger quantities of water to go about life’s daily processes.

Most of the water absorbed by a tree on a given day is lost through the foliage by a process known transpiration. Water is absorbed by the root system, enters the xylem tissue, and travels upward to the canopy where some is used in photosynthesis and the majority is released as water vapor through small holes in the leaves known as stomata. The loss of water vapor through stomata can cool the leaf surface as much as 10-15°F. It can be estimated that some leaves may transpire about one-tenth of an ounce of water per day during the summer months. A mature elm tree with 150,000 leaves could possibly transpire more than 100 gallons of water a day during the summer months.

Trees going through drought may experience some common symptoms. One of the more common symptoms is a change in color. Drought stressed trees typically appear to have a lighter green color than healthy trees of the same species. The leaf edges (margins to be correct) can show brown, dead tissue. A plant pathologist would call this disorder, leaf scorch. As conditions continue, leaves will eventually drop prematurely from the tree. If conditions persist season long, then expect stunted growth, dead branches, and secondary pest issues like bark beetles.

So that leaves the question of what do we do about it now? There isn’t an easy answer to provide other than to reduce as much stress as possible. Not adding additional stress should be mentioned as well.

Some folks go out of the way and create unnecessary stress on their landscape trees thinking they are helping. Don’t fall victim to loving your trees too much!

The best thing that a tree owner can do for a large landscape tree is to maintain a mulched area over the immediate root system. Think about the forest floor and recreate that concept using mulch with your landscape trees. Ideally, the entire dripline area of the tree should be mulched, but if that isn’t practical then a 5-6ft diameter circle will help. Mulch is a force multiplier when it comes to a healthy productive root system. It will prevent evaporation and help to keep water in the rootzone if it isn’t raining.

Most people think they need to start pruning when a tree starts to show signs of drought stress.

Plants respond to pruning by growing so I can understand the thought progression, but when managing drought stressed trees unneeded stress is harmful. Remember that growth is stunted with a lack of water, so trees can’t heal properly after being pruned. This can expose the non-living plant tissue found in the middle of trunks and branches (heartwood) to the environment for an extended period, increasing the chances of encountering a pathogen. The only pruning that should be done to a drought stressed tree would be obvious safety issues on a high-risk tree.

As long as a tree has leaves, it is still actively taking up water. Behind mulching, one of the best things to help a drought stressed tree out is to provide supplemental irrigation to offset the lack of rainfall.

This can be done with just a water hose and a faucet. Let water slowly seep into the soil by setting the faucet to a trickle and allowing it to run for several hours above the immediate root system of the tree.

Soaker hoses can be used in same way to cover multiple trees at one time. Do this once a week if it is not raining. Most of our trees will still take up water going into November.

These recommendations will help to reduce stress on larger growing trees in the landscape.

Understand that each plant is a different organism, and these suggestions won’t always turn things around. They will, however, provide a slightly better growing environment so that your trees can hopefully grow themselves out of this predicament. Do what you can and then take the “wait and see” approach. This has been one of the driest years that we have seen in a long time!

The New Orleans Saints are as badly coached as any team I have ever seen. The defense is trying to do its best but is getting tired at the end of the games and still giving this team a chance to win. However, on offense the play calling is as bland as can be and there are no adjustments during any part of the game.

Now, before you blame Derek Carr, this is not all on him. When he is not running for his life, the play calls force him to the short side of the field or routes that have receivers in the same area or way short of the yard markers. That is of course when it is not a design hand off to Kamara or a short screen to him where they expect him to make miracles. All you see is Dennis Allen walking the sidelines with his chest out, chewing gum and trying to figure out how to work his radio! This is a good football team with very bad leadership. I would immediately Fire Allen and OC Pete Carmichael and promote Doug Marrone to Head Coach and Ronald Curry to Offensive Coordinator!

Now, I am off that soap box. Let me officially reverse course and apologize for my assumption on Jayden Daniels. I previously questioned his ability to lead the LSU offense and a big-time program. However, I was completely wrong, and he is one of the best quarterbacks LSU has ever had not named Burrow or Hodson and easily the best quarterback in the country this year!

First responders from the local area, to include Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, NAS JRB New Orleans Fire & Emergency Services, NAS JRB New Orleans Security Department, and Louisiana State Police, joined service member members and civilians for a National Night Out Against Crime event onboard NAS JRB New Orleans, Oct. 3. During the event, the Belle Chasse Academy band delivered a live performance, local police and fire departments provided live demonstrations of K-9 takedowns, firefighting efforts, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robot operations.

This Daniels led offense is as prolific as the 2019 team if not more so. This team does not have the overall defensive talent that the title team had so it must make up for the lack there of or LSU loses. So, the pressure is much higher, and the decision making must be spot on while the play calling has to be more meticulous.

Individually, Daniels leads the SEC and ranks number 2 in the nation in four categories: total offense (398.5 YPG), passing TDs (19), pass efficiency (196.7 rating) and points responsible for (140). He stands atop the SEC and ranks #3 in the nation in passing yards per game (328.2). He ranks 3rd among all QBs nationally in rushing yards with 422. His 513 total yards of offense against Ole Miss ranks 2nd in the country this season.

While LSU leads the nation is total first downs with 169 (28 per game) and is third in total offense, averaging 548.3 yards per game. The Tigers are #2 in the SEC in rushing yards and 14th nationally while 7th in passing nationally. Brian Thomas leads the nation with 9 touchdown catches. He’s 7th nationally in receiving yards while Malik Nabers is #2 in receiving yards and yards per game nationally and in the top ten nationally in all other receiver categories.

If this defense can continue to progress weekly and with the offense on pace to break records while easily being the best in the conference, then we might have some good fortune yet again at the end of the year. We will just have to hold tight and enjoy the ride.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Agents Cite Slidell Man for Littering in Orleans Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited a Slidell man for an alleged littering violation in Orleans Parish on Oct. 5.

Agents were patrolling the Orleans Parish area when they were notified about a large litter pile just outside of Irish Bayou. After investigating the location, agents found multiple forms of documentation that linked Cartagena to the litter.

Agents made contact with Cartagena and issued him the citation for gross littering.

Gross littering carries up to a $900 fine, up to 30 days in jail and 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement program.

Finally! Some cooler temperatures have finally arrived! Today would have been a perfect day to cut grass and work in the yard. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards for me. I ended up missing my achilles tendon, so I am now wearing a boot. No, not a short boot, but the tall boot, all the way to the knee. But that is okay, it gave me time to finish the Christmas ornaments I was working on for the column.

The designer of these cute little geese is Renee Mullins. These were so much fun to paint! And did not last long.

When I showed them to my daughter and granddaughter and they showed them to their friends, before I knew it, they were sold. Of course that made me very happy! I am now waiting on more wooden surfaces to arrive. What I like most about these is that the holly and berries are separate wood cutouts that I glued to each goose. Add a little Diamond Dust, something really elegant as a hanger and you have the perfect Christmas ornament for yourself or to give as a small gift to someone. It can also be personalized with a name or the year. Hope you like this cute ornament.

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 10.20.22 Woundeed War Heroes Every year for over 10 years I have sponsored and participated in this event. I actually gave up 2 trips in order for this to happen. These guys and gals are that special. We give these Wounded War Heroes a fully paid weekend here with ceremonies and trophies and other prizes.

While trying for our 4 red snapper we had to avoid the sharks. Sometimes we had to fight them all the way to the boat. I was using rod and reel setupsheavy enough that they could not break sobwe had to bring them to the boat. This was an unexpected treat for then. This shark was about 6 feet long.

After we limited out on red snapper we went looking for some more meat to take home. I went into an area where we would still get red snapper but they were all catch and release from here on. We found some nice mangrove snapper and bull croaker to add to our bounty The next day a front came through so we could not run for snapper. We had to look for a place where there was protection from the winds. We also had to find clean water that was moving. There was a flip tide so our tide hight was only 0.6 feet with an hour of flat in the middle over a 13 hour span. Our first fish of the day was this beautifull bull red. He really enjoyed the battle this stud d gave him.

For a while it seemed like the fish were being attracted to this person. It did not matter as long as we were bring them to the boat.

We were getting a good mix of fish as you can see by this beautiful trout.

The winds were blowing a lot making for some difficult casting and limited areas to fish. My power poles were gliding through the mud with the wind pushing the boat in some areas. Only way to tell is by the wrinkles in his shirt. This was his first fish of the day. I felt sorry for him. He was a good fisherman but was just not getting the bites.

He had been watching these guys trying to school him on fishing. This was a nice double. The little one just made 16 inches so it also got a free ice bath on me.

We had a good flounder come in the boat. The picture and the wayvhe is holding it does not do it justice. This flounder took second place in the flounder division for the weekend.

It was a slow day as expected but I was able to scratch out a few nice fish once again.

Overall the weekend was another great success. These veterans had a well deserved weekend on us. God bless them all and keep them safe.

SOD WEBWORMS CAUSING TURF DAMAGE There are several species of caterpillars that occasionally damage turfgrass in Mississippi including fall armyworms, cutworms, and sod webworms. Although fall armyworms are the primary pest we see in pasture and rangeland almost annually, we often see the both the sod webworm and tropical sod webworm on the coast. The good news is these sod webworm pests aren’t always reaching the economic threshold; the bad news...they are this year!

Tropical sod webworm moths look much different than the moths of other sod webworms. Moths are often noticed before damage is observed, with large numbers of low-flying, small, whitish or brown moths being flushed up from the lawn and surrounding ornamental shrubs, or being attracted to lights at night. Because these insects do not survive freezing weather, they are more common in the coastal counties.

Heavy outbreaks are sporadic and can cause severe short-term damage, with turf having a dead, ragged appearance, and with trails of webbing present among the grass blades. In heavy infestations, small brown patches of affected turf may run together forming irregular, brown patches.

Sod webworms will damage all types of turf grass but especially favor St. Augustine, bermuda, and centipede so careful, frequent scouting is necessary to detect a developing infestation before it causes damage. There may be two or three generations per year so several applications may be necessary in a growing season. Foliar spay products such as Sevin concentrate containing Beta-permethrin, Spinosad, and Ortho Bug-B-Gone Insect Killer containing Bifenthrin are a few choices to consider although there are granular products available. Halloween Safety for Pets As you prepare your Halloween costume, make sure you are also preparing your pets for the holiday as well. There can be nothing cuter than your pup dressed up in their favorite costume, but Halloween can prove to be scary for our furry friends if we don’t take the proper precautions. We have a few Halloween pet safety tips that will keep you and your pets safe this spooky season!

We all love to see a Chihuahua in a fairy costume, Golden Retriever in a lion’s mane, or a cat dressed as a queen, but as pet parents we have to make sure our pets love it just as much. When picking out the purfect costume you should be checking that it doesn’t restrict their mobility, ability to breathe, see, bark, or meow. Our pets can quickly become upset if they are uncomfortable inside their costume and will show you by hissing, growling, and constantly trying to swipe it off. We want our fur-babies to trust us and the best way to do that is to not force them into wearing things they don’t want to wear. Also be aware of any small pieces the costume contains, as those can be choking hazards for your pets. The best bet is to go with a festive bandana, collar, or hair bow that will surely make show off how spooky and cute they are!

The night of Halloween can be quite exciting as the streets fill with ghouls, goblins, and witches alike! You may decide that you want to bring your pet along for the adventure, but we do not recommend it. Sometimes our pets can become overwhelmed by all the costumes that people hide behind as well as all the noise they make as they trick or treat. It is important that you watch how your pet is reacting to the activity around them and if you notice at any point that they are scared or overwhelmed, it is best to bring them back home. There may also be pieces of candy along the street that our pets will love to try to eat but we know is not good for them. So please watch that they cannot get into anyone’s leftover candy and into any trick or treat bowls or bags left around. If your pet is being well behaved and having a great time trick or treating with you, we want you to also be careful about approaching your neighbor’s front door with them. You never know if they have their own pet right behind the door!

If you choose to leave your pet at home while you celebrate around the neighborhood, please be aware that your door will be knocked on and the doorbell will be rung. So, if your pet overly reacts to noises like this, it is best to keep them in their kennel or in a room away from the front door. You could turn the TV on or play some calming music for them so that it drowns out the spooky noises from outside. A fun treat like a peanut butter filled toy could also help keep them stay occupied while you are away. Placing your bowl of candy away from windows where your pet might be alerted by the trick-or-treaters.

Tony, a ten year old brown tabby, has lived comfortably in a home almost his whole life. He was found outdoors as a tiny kitten by a couple who brought him in and cared for him. The husband put Tony in his shirt pocket to keep him warm.

The husband passed away recently and now the wife has to give up her home and cherished pets and move into assisted living. Tony will soon be without a home. He has a wonderful, sweet personality his owner says.
