Tony’s Take REBELS WITHOUT A CAUSE
From mystical Halloween nights to frosty breakfast-fueled mornings, the LSU Tigers have had to host and defeat the Ole Miss Rebels under a variety of scenarios. None, however, compared to the nearly perfect afternoon leading into the absolutely perfect night game this past Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, where heartbreak visited the close-but-no-cigar boys from Oxford once again.
Perhaps no other team has torn the Rebels heart out as diabolically or suddenly as the Tigers, From the legendary 89-yard punt return by Billy Cannon in 1959 to the Brad Davis score with literally no time on the clock, the LSU Tiger nails have scratched a bitter screech in Ole Miss ears time and time again. But nothing ever equalled the Mississippi loss on Saturday when the high-octane Rebs sputtered and backfired on itself ad nauseam. Combined with a gutty offensive show by an injured LSU receiver and running back corps, led by a streaky Garrett Nussmeier at quarterback, Ole Miss couldn’t penetrate the previously porous Tiger secondary and suddenly sack-happy front seven and dropped a 29 to 26 contest.
Neither Ole Miss quarterback Jason Dart nor Head Coach Lane Kiffen could understand how they lost the game. Simple, gentlemen. LSU left both of you on the SEC airport tarmac in the rain, where showmen like you wind up when they meet strong men like LSU, Alabama, Georgia and those of us in the league who can put it all together under fire. Ole Miss....you’ve never been there yet. Come to think of it, neither has Arkansas nor Texas A&M, a pair of worthy but yet uninitiated programs that can also partially finger LSU as the cause of their shattered dreams. Those two are next, both on the road, but no Calling of the Hogs or 12th Man legend will stop this Tiger team, wounded in manpower but now united in purpose.
If the swag and brag gets bottled up and the Process (remember that from Nick Saban?) continues, this LSU team could enter their remaining games as the favorite, especially over a now exposed Alabama team that has to enter the Valley November 9th. Fold, Tide!

Whatever potion Coach Kelly the Irishman from Massachusetts has brewed up seems to have taken a positive effect on LSU. Perhaps his frustration from a dozen years of no brass ring in South Bend has finally forced him to have an epiphany which has spread into the retooled LSU skill set players on offense and the entire LSU defensive team. That outfit now has two All SEC and possible All Americans with Bradyn Swinson and Whit Weeks, the latter who has to be considered the best linebacker in the league. And with no Harold Perkins or Jacobian Guillory, both with season-ending injuries, whose absences have been admirably filled by Swinson and Weeks.
So, dream on Tiger fans. It’s not Burrow, Daniels, Nabers, Chase and Jefferson strong but its enough to go toe-to-toe with the aforementioned teams plus Tennessee, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma and probably even Texas. Suddenly, the College Playoffs seems reachable without falling down.
P.S. Speaking of falling down, I have to thank Paqui Kelly, Coach Kelly’s wife, for offering me a ride back to my car after Saturday’s game. A charming and frank lady, she chauffeured me in her four-seat golf cart to my ride east of University High. This is a service she’s enjoyed doing since her days at Notre Dame. How she happened by with the offer as I walked along the Parade Grounds sidewalk, out of the goodness and friendliness of her heart, was serendipity. My many knee, balance and neuropathy issues forces me to walk with a cane and the real threat of tripping or falling. Maybe she spotted that. But it was the perfect ending to a perfect day and night. Thanks again, Paqui!

ORNAMENTAL PEPPERS ADD FALL COLOR TO THE LANDSCAPE.
Ornamental pepper plants are popular choices for gardeners in Louisiana. The red, orange, yellow, and green colors of ripe pepper fruits fit in well with harvest season décor and fall color schemes. Because of their popularity and easy-to-grow nature, the LSU AgCenter named all ornamental peppers varieties as Louisiana Super Plants back in 2022. Home improvement stores, plant nurseries, and garden centers have picked up on this recent trend and now market ornamental peppers with other fall related plant material like crotons, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers even though they can also be grown in the spring and summer months.
Researchers currently agree that the pepper plant originated from Mexico and other areas in Western Central America. This offers a little explanation of why they are seen almost everywhere around South Louisiana. They can take the heat! A lot of folks are having success with planting ornamental pepper plants in the later summer months where the plants easily establish themselves in the hot growing conditions and then as the days start to shorten and daily temperatures slowly reduce, they start flowering. They will put on a show during October, November, and into December during mild winters.
Most people think of peppers when growing a vegetable garden but that is not the case anymore. Peppers are now being grown for their fruit color, fruit size, and foliage color. Potted ornamental pepper plants can be used alongside bales of hay, gourds, pumpkins, and corn stalks to make a nice fall display on the front porch. Ornamental peppers can be used to create interest in mixed container planting. Their compact growth size can be used as a filler plant or some of the more interestingcolored peppers can be used as a thriller plant to draw attention to the container. Don’t forget that these pepper plants can be used in a flower bed situation. Create a design using ornamental peppers along with seasonal bedding plants in your landscape beds this fall.
Ornamental peppers will thrive in areas that are well-drained and receive full sunlight. Due to their current popularity, you’ll find many different varieties while shopping garden centers this season. ‘Purple Flash’ produces gorgeous, variegated foliage in shades of purple. ‘Midnight Fire’ produces deep purple-black foliage which contrasts with dark red fruits. ‘Black Hawk Hybrid’ produces green leaves and bright red fruits that start black. The ‘Chilly Chili’ pepper produces 2–4-inch fruit in shades of yellow, green, orange and red. Add a whimsical look to your patio using ‘Hot Pops Purple’ peppers. They produce small, round purple and orange peppers that look like they came out of a Dr. Seuss story! So much variety that there is something for everyone.
Think about using ornamental pepper plants in the landscape or container garden this season. They’re an easy-to-grow plant with several new releases on the market. We’ve listed some of the standouts above but make sure to check out what your local garden center has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.

Hi Everyone, October is finally here! Are you enjoying the cooler weather? I am totally loving it! Hopefully the cooler temperatures will keep any future hurricanes from destroying homes and lives. My heart goes out to all the families who lost everything in Francine, Helene, and Milton. I think we have had enough of this Hurricane season.

Let’s talk about this time’s project. With Halloween being so close I thought we needed something a little SPOOKY to hang from the front door. (Unfortunately, this one will be going back to Mississippi College with my granddaughter, Carlea’. So if I want one I will have to paint another one for me. Ha! Ha! Ha! I changed the original design of this to make it more my own. I decided I wanted it on a 10” round instead of a 6” and I wanted a couple ghosts. Every haunted house has to have ghosts and more bats. I also decided to change the wording by the pumpkin. Haven’t decided if I am going to add anything to the hat. I will wait and see what Carlea’ wants on it. This was so much fun to paint, especially the background with the three different layered colors. OOPS looks like I need to paint two more of these. I better get started.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I’m thinking maybe “Thanksgiving”. WOW is it really that close? Until next time........
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, let’s talk about what kind of state we are in regarding the local football scene. We shall start with the bad and I promise to only talk about this briefly. I know the New Orleans Saints are dealing with some injuries and most notably to Mr. Swiss Army Knife, Taysom Hill, but that does not excuse the way this team has been playing, a dumpster fire. The offense is a bit out of sync while the Defense, which Head Coach Dennis Allen is known for, has been atrocious tackling. Spencer Rattler looked like a rookie with some promise but I want to hold all critiques until he has a real offensive line in front of him. I have said it many times before and I will repeat it again, as long as the Saints have Dennis Allen then they will be just a mediocre team at best. We need to cut bait with him, let Klint Kubiak take over as the Head Coach and just see what happens from this point on.
Now that my rant on the Saints is over, let us move to the very positive of things and what a team with a competent head coach looks like…THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY TIGERS! Sure, they had a tough week 1 loss and Brian Kelly does not have the best record to open the season. But, when their backs are against the wall and they need to improve and compete against good teams that is when they are at their best.
The Bayou Bengals had major issues with the defense last year and have vastly improved this year. You lose the “best” defensive player on the team and you become better on that side of the ball? That is nothing but pure coaching. However, I have said that I think the defense losing Harold Perkins might be the best thing for this team moving forward. DC Blake Baker has not had to find a spot to play Perkins and the now starters can get comfortable at a position, learn it and just go out there and play football! I waited all year for October 12th! Ole Miss lost a game that I wish they would have won but both teams had so much to play for with the loser pretty much out of the national championship race. I was hoping this game would be the environment that I had waited for all year and boy was it and then some.
The fans were buzzing around hours before game time and once inside we had these light wristbands waiting on our seats. The large crowd started flowing in and around 30 minutes before game-time you were standing shoulder to shoulder with the people next to you. Once the band got on the field, the bands started lighting up and there was a pause of caution thinking that this was going to be a bad idea. However, once the sun found its home in the western sky, Tiger Stadium then turned into Death or Deaf Valley where opponents’ dreams come to die. This was easily the best environment since 2019 and one of the tops ever. You had celebrities all over the place, including SHAQ and tons of former players including OBJ & Justin Jefferson. LSU had well over 200 recruits straddling the sidelines and a total of over 102,000 people in attendance.
When it was time to get loud, the stadium was not just loud, it was deafening. So much so, your ears start ringing and your voice is hoarse by the end of the night. All of this and on a night when your star quarterback was having a very unusual off night throwing the ball and surely your defense could not keep up with a high-powered Ole Miss Offense all night long. Well, the Nuss Bus finally started speeding up in the 2nd half and that very under rated defense was not only hanging with the Black Bears, but they were controlling them. The defensive line was getting pressure to a tune of 6 sacks while those young defensive backs were running stride for stride with the receivers. Oh and a kid named Whit Weeks ran sideline to sideline while racking up 18 tackles with 10 of them being solo. Stars were watching but some newer LSU stars were made on the field. Even though, I do not agree with storming the field for a game against the Land Sacked Sharks, I understand what beating a Top 10 opponent means and the fans put in so much enthusiasm, deserved to celebrate the victory as well.
Man oh man, what a night it was and what a game to add to LSU lore. Now, you have become a Top 10 team yourself and have 2 tough road games ahead! The good news is that there is not a game that you will not go in and can not win. This game against Mississippi showed that even when your offense is not running on all cylinders, your defense will step up to the occasion. Which is one thing that you could not come close to saying last year. Give major kudos to the new defensive coaches and to Coach Kelly for making in game adjustments and putting this team in spots to win.
One thing is for sure, buckle up because this train is full steam ahead and the only team that can defeat them is themselves!

ORANGE DOG
The giant swallowtail butterfly is found across much of the United States, including Mississippi. With an adult forewing span of 5.5 inches for males and 5.8 inches for females, giant swallowtails are (as you might expect) large for a butterfly. The larva of a giant swallowtail is commonly called an orange dog. Orange dogs can grow to be 2 to 3 inches long. At first glance, they look like bird droppings due to their brown and white color-ation. This imitation provides camouflage to would-be predators. Older orange dogs can also protrude defensive structures called osmeteria from the body when disturbed. Doing so mimics the tongue of a snake and releases a foul odor, both of which deter possible predators.
While swallowtail butterflies are a beautiful sight to behold, orange dogs can be a citrus pest. These caterpillars are a problem only on young trees, with one or two able to strip a young citrus tree completely of its foliage. If control is necessary, insecticides containing spi-nosad or zeta-cypermethrin are effective against small caterpillars. Always read and follow current la-bel directions. Hand removal of caterpillars is an additional option for control.
For more information on the orange dog caterpillar, see Bug’s Eye View Vol. 10, No. 10, Orange Dog.

FALL CHORES
As cooler weather approaches, it’s time for gardeners to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Beautiful vegetable gardens, orchards, and landscapes don’t happen by chance—they require effort and at-tention. Fertilizing, watering, pruning, weeding—the tasks are endless. Taking a proactive approach, espe-cially in preventing diseases, is key to maintaining healthy plants. Gardeners often use a mix of common-sense strategies to manage issues like leaf spots, wilts, and root rots. The following steps can help pre-serve or improve your garden’s health this fall.
To reduce leaf spot diseases such as rose black spot, photinia leaf blight, and holly tar spot in the upcoming season, remove fallen leaves before spring. In vegetable gardens, clear out the remains of this past season’s crops. Many disease-causing micro-organisms survive winter with ease, so proper cleanup can minimize issues like early blight and Septoria leaf spot in next year’s tomato crop.
While you’re in the garden, it’s helpful to note where each vegetable was grown. This will aid in planning crop rotation for next spring, helping to avoid planting the same vegetables in the same spots, which can lead to disease buildup over time.
In orchards, pruning infected branches can help manage canker and dieback diseases like fire blight and black knot of plums. Be sure to cut at least six inches below the last visible signs of infection and disinfect pruning tools between cuts with a ten-percent bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) to prevent the spread of disease. Remember to wash and oil your tools afterward to prevent rust. Removing “mummies” (dried, leftover fruit) from beneath peach trees can help reduce brown rot, while clearing out diseased apples from trees or the ground can combat bitter and black rot in apples.
Fall is also an ideal time to collect soil samples to assess the fertility of gardens, orchards, and landscapes. Following a recommended fertility program can help strengthen plants, making them less vulnerable to disease and pests. While collecting soil samples, it’s also wise to check for nematodes, as these tiny pests can quickly cause problems, particularly root knot nematodes.
Take advantage of the cooler weather to tidy up your garden and take a proactive stance against disease. Prevention is far more effective than dealing with problems once they’ve taken hold. -0-

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Here are some of START’s rescued felines hoping to find forever homes. While they may look like someone’s pampered pets, they are all homeless cats who are living in START foster homes until they are adopted. All START rescues are spayed/ neutered and receive all veterinary care before they go to a new home. Every year shelters and rescue organizations fill up with pets that have no one to care for them. The situation this year has been extreme, especially for parish shelters that cannot turn pets away.
Please contact your local animal shelter or rescue group to find out what you can do to help. To reduce the number of unwanted animals, please spay and neuter your pets. Contact START or your local shelter to find out about low cost spay/ neuter programs in your area.
