Tony’s Take

LSU’s group of tattered players has survived a rough early season because of about seven dependable men who have improved sufficiently to insure a top 15 national ranking and putting fannies in Tiger Stadium of the rest of the year.

Thanks begin with Garrett Nussmeier who found a way not to leave the Ole War Skule for spite or allegedly greener pastures, including one legacy signal caller who has not been heard from since. Nussmeier as a quarterback is performing only behind the two recent Heisman winners from LSU - Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow. Nussmeier doesn’t have the scrambling ability of Burrow nor the pure running talents of Daniels, who might be the greatest college one-season running quarterback of all time. What he has, though, is an arm equal to Burrow in strength and an ability to read the field like both Burrow and Daniels.

Add the talents of Aaron Anderson, Cayden Durham, Mason Taylor, Kyren Lacy, Whit Weeks and Bradyn Swinson and you have the core of a team that could, with time, talent and luck, make it through the rest of their schedule unscathed and wind up probably second overall in the SEC. That’s a lot of praying, though, and the reality starts with the toughest team remaining this season, Ole Miss. The Rebels have an offense equal in firepower to the 2019 and 2023 Tigers this season, even after losing their All American running back to Ohio State’s NIL bid in the offseason. The Ole Miss defense is good enough to put pressure on LSU’s underperforming offensive line and deadly to what has to be a reflection of the 2022 and 2020 Tiger secondary, where the legend of LSU being DBU recently died.

LSU’s corners are historically bad. Really bad. Or so young that their learning curve might not kick in fast enough this season to help against Ole Miss or Alabama. The two best quarterbacks in the SEC (sorry, excited Tennessee fans) will eat up these kids for about eight or nine touchdowns unless they learn to stay with their men and create passes broken up or even (gulp!) intercepted. Their weaknesses have really exposed LSU’s flanks, a zone five to 20 yards deep and ten yards wide, forcing outside linebackers to help in those zones and leaving outside areas open for uncontested pitch and catches along the sidelines or evacuating the middle to allow gut punches like those from Nichols State and South Carolina.

ARROWHEADS AND INDIAN ARTIFACTS. Authentic only. Cash paid. Call 228235-1506.

The road is clear: continue the development schemes that allow Swinson and Jones to put pressure on the quarterback, leading to sacks, disruptions and turnovers. Allow young defensive tackles like McKinley, Washington and Suggs all the playing time they can handle against South Alabama. (This was written before that game and I hope the Tiger coaching staff agreed). Give Womack more snaps in a three-way defensive end rotation to give this former four-star recruit to shine. And allow Harold Perkins to be the disrupter he was two years ago. He doesn’t scare many offensive coaches this season.

The secondary will have to use the nickel or dime at least half the time against Ole Miss and Alabama. Let them run for 200 yards….it will be less destructive than getting burned for 450 yards and four or five touchdowns. Stop the big outside plays and let Major Burns be the enforcer in the middle. It might not lead to wins but it will give the secondary the experience and more important, the confidence they need for the rest of the season.

After Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M on the road, both winnable. Then another bye to prepare for the ‘Bama game at home, an easy road trip to Florida and winding up with Vandy and Oklahoma, both at home. Byes before their two biggest games of the year and winnable road games all season with a weak SEC opponent an an overrated Oklahoma squad to end the season at home, Nice job, schedule makers! Now….LSU show your gratitude by resembling Tiger teams of old. You won’t make the final four dance but you won’t be playing in the Cheez-it Citrus Bowl in January either.

Words to GREAUX by

ARMILLARIA ROOT ROT

With the recent rains since Hurricane Francine passed through the area, many folks are noticing fairy rings in lawns and other mushrooms popping up around the landscape. We call mushrooms the fruiting bodies, or sporereleasing structures, of certain fungal organisms. Most of the mushrooms we see in the landscape aren’t causing harm. They are breaking down dead organic matter, assisting with nutrient recycling, and helping to improve the physical conditions of the soil in which they are growing. Some, however, will attack living plants and cause serious home garden issues.

Armillaria Root Rot (ARR) is a root disease caused by the fungi Armillaria and Desarmillaria. The fruiting bodies of these fungi normally appear in fall when nighttime temperatures start to lower and there is decent rainfall. The fungi enter susceptible plants near the root collar and crown area where they feed within the vascular tissue. Vascular tissues move water and dissolved solutes around within a plant. Stopping the flow of water from roots to the canopy will show symptoms rather quickly ending in plant death.

Symptoms of ARR include wilted foliage, rapid decline, and eventual plant death. Wilted leaves do not respond to supplemental water. In certain hosts, yellow leaves eventually drop to the ground while in others they turn completely brown. The entire plant can go from looking okay to severely stressed in a very short amount of time. Seeing the honey-colored mushrooms growing from the base of an affected tree is one way of confirming ARR, but like most fungi, Armillaria produces fruiting bodies once the food supply is running out. Another way to confirm Armillaria on a suspected plant is to examine the crown area and scrape the bark. If white fungal growth (mycelium) is found, you can confirm ARR. In some situations, you can observe a strong odor of mushrooms to help confirm the pathogen.

ARR can be problematic in urban environments that were previously covered in natural vegetation, especially hardwoods like oak. Armillaria survives in the soil and on infected plant debris. It becomes active when roots from a nearby healthy plant come into contact with old, infected tissue or spores in the soil. It can spread from one infected plant to another via root-to-root contact. Once a plant becomes infected and the fungus starts its lifecycle there is no cure. There are no chemical pesticides available to manage this pathogen.

Successful management of this disease is primarily attained through exclusion because once the pathogen enters the plant, it’s physically protected from any pesticide sprays. Start with disease-free, healthy plants, when adding plants to the landscape. Plant them as recommended with the top of the root ball sitting above the soil level in your garden. A visible root flare helps confirm that the planting process was followed correctly. When mulching, maintain a 2-3 inch of mulch above the immediate root zone. Don’t mulch up the trunk or smother the crown. The root flare should be visible. If not, pull the mulch back 4-6 inches to expose the crown area.

Remove and discard suspected ARR-infected plants entirely from the landscape. Aim to remove as much of the material as possible, along with the soil directly around the old root system to help reduce the potential of a new infection. Practice good sanitation when working in the landscape. Clean pruners with alcohol when moving from bed to bed. Throw diseased plant parts out with the trash rather than adding them to the compost pile. Prune tree limbs and adjacent bushes in such a way as to improve airflow and increase the amount of sunlight in the area. Managing surface drainage can be a helpful preventative as well.

Armillaria happens to be a common fungal pathogen in Louisiana and the surrounding areas, especially where native vegetation is constantly being developed into residential sites. Keep an eye out for symptomatic plants and dispose of them when necessary. Aim to keep remaining plants healthy via supplemental irrigation, good fertility and nutrition, and proper maintenance so they can naturally defend themselves from an Armillaria attack and you’ll be doing the best you can do in managing the disease in your landscape. -0-

Hope you all are doing well and was not affected by Hurricane Francine. I am keeping everyone in Florida that was devastated by Hurricane Helene in prayer. I just heard there is another disturbance out there playing around. Let’s hope and pray that it stays over open water and doesn’t decide to come on land anywhere!

When I hobbled outside this morning (Yes, still in the boot, but trying to transition out.) there was a very nice feel to the air. Less humidity, a little cooler, could we really be trying to feel some Fall weather? I decided to show you the Scarecrow I painted. I must admit when I painted him I wasn’t feeling totally up to par but wanted to do something. I am not sure about the expression on his face. But, I am sure it is not what the designing artist had in mind. But, anyway....I really like the way the colors flow together. And I even enjoyed doing the line work when I completed painting the piece. I used a Micron pen to outline the piece, so before I applied my regular brush varnish I had to spray varnish it first. I applied 3 coats of varnish, put a Command picture hanger on the back of him and ended up sticking him on one of the kitchen cabinet doors. Just a reminder that things do get better.

Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Wow, what a difference a few weeks make! A couple weeks ago, LSU was trying to put together a complete game while the Saints were blowing people out of the water. Now, the Bayou Bengals are coming off a very impressive win while the Saints have suffered 2 devastating losses. These two teams are completely night and day just like their coaches.

Ok, let us start with the night. When, LSU plays at night it is always much better than the day but under Brian Kelly this team has proven to do well no matter what time they play in Death Valley. After suffering a loss to now #11 USC the 1st week of the season, LSU has rolled off 4 straight wins. Although struggling a bit early against Nicholls, fighting for a win at South Carolina, a 2nd half shut out of UCLA & finally almost a complete game against South Alabama.

Nevertheless, they are exactly where they should be sitting 4-1 with a bye week to get healthy before hosting the boys from the Sip. This game has been circled on the calendar for months and although the Rebels just dropped a home game to Kentucky this will more than likely still be a Top 15 match-up. The Bayou Bengals have found their bell-cow running back in true freshman Caden Durham while Garrett Nussmeier has continued to throw the ball around like he is playing in the backyard.

The defense, minus Harold Perkins, looked better to me. Whit Weeks was flying from sideline to sideline and Greg Penn was doing a bang-up job monitoring the middle. All of this, while the defensive front was getting pressure, and the young defensive backs were gaining valuable experience. Coach Kelly stated that the rotation in the defensive backfield will not be as fluid as it has been so far since he believes that they have pinpointed the guys that they want to play during the SEC slate.

There is nothing but confidence oozing from this coach and his team while knowing what adjustments need to be made to continue a successful path from this point forward. With what hopefully should be a good bit of night games inside Death Valley, this night side of the equation is way brighter than what we should have on the day side.

Now, onto the Saints! In what seemed to be an unstoppable force has found the injury bug and a tired defense. With New Orleans losing there starting center and Swiss army knife this team looks completely different. The line has done a valiant job, but this offense is clearly missing Taysom Hill. This was no more evident than when the Saints lost to the Eagles and then led the Falcons behind 2 Hill touchdowns only to lose at the end and struggled to get in the endzone after he left that game with an injury.

Derek Carr has been doing what he needs to do but this team is just falling short of where they need to be. I will not say this is on new offensive coordinator Kubiak just yet, but I will solely place the blame on endless gum chewing, red marker wearing, non-communicative, Head Coach Dennis Allen. I swear all this guy does is wall up and down the sidelines looking like he has a stick up his butt while endlessly chewing on a piece of gum.

Adjustments are not being made at half-time and once a few key players get injured or something gets stopped there is no way of getting around it. This team has potential but is not being led, they are just going with the flow and not getting taught how to manage negativity. Losing close games that you should win is evidence of this and if things do not change, than what was once a promising season will blow up in their face and we might have to pull out the paper bags. Either way, my heart and blood pressure cannot take these close games anymore.

Tony’s Take

NO ISLAND FOR RAYMOND AFTER CONVICTIONS

It was John Donne in the 17th century who wrote “no man is an island” in his short but insightful poem regarding Man’s need to belong to something greater than himself. He ended the missive with another famous line, “do not ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.”

Both thoughts summarize the life of John Raymond, Slidell’s now infamous pastor whose actions with taped and covered mouths of students under his tutelage led to his new status as a convicted felon.

The quick verdict in last week’s trial appeared to stun the tall, charismatic Raymond who had been nearly unflappable in his demeanor and attitudes preceding the incidents two years ago in Slidell.

Raymond shares the same traits of other founders and so-tittled pastors of what I refer to as “Boutique Churches” places of great physical grounds, attracting the Baby Boomers and some Gen Xers who got tired of the same ‘ol, same ‘ol with most established Christian denominations. Tall, strong, charismatic and unflappable. A magnet for folks. But like many such leaders, Raymond mixed in bullying, intimidation, arrogance and ignorance of the facts and conditions. A majority of voters found Raymond wanting when he ran for public office but local and state Republican groups either looked the other way or thought Raymond had enough positive qualities to serve their political needs. Not any more.

Raymond was an early contestant on “Survivor”, a long-standing television series where a group of men and women are tasked with chores, physical and psychological challenges and the ability to get along with other contestants while seeking to remain the last person on the island where they were placed, thus being the winner of that season. Raymond was voted off his island first, perhaps even faster than most contestants in the same position during other seasons. Raymond believed it was because of his strengths and leadership abilities. But I have had conversations with other “Survivor” participants and they rolled their eyes and smirked when I offered his version of his ouster. So....no island for Raymond. But there were still the pastoral lands of Louisiana where he could run a jewelry mail order business, a school and a church. Not to mention a religious radio station, which Raymond named “The Bridge, an outlet which is part of what is called “The Raymond Collective”. When local folk legally attempted to look at Raymond’s FCC files a few years ago, Raymond called the police to have them arrested for harassment. As a former broadcaster, I know these records should be made available to the public. Perhaps Raymond didn’t want the folks to know that he was well behind on payments to the Florida company who provided his equipment or with the rent on his building on Pontchartrain Drive.

Raymond is in his sixties now, so a sympathetic judge may sentence him to only a fraction of the possible 70-year collective prison time he now faces. Or he might even get off with a suspended sentence and walk away with no time to serve. Back to his “collective” and the Hispanic church that now shares his sanctuary. April’s tornado hit that structure hard but didn’t seem to faze Raymond that much. But his political career is clearly in free fall.

Fate has caught up to Raymond and he finally may receive the island he so richly deserves. And from the surprised look on Raymond’ face following the jury’s verdict, we can only add “do not ask for whom the bells toll, it tolls for thee.”

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water, sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

Author unknown…

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops & looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent.

FALL ARMYWORMS

Fall armyworms are extremely damaging insect pests of Mississippi hayfields and, pastures and in Bermuda turfgrass set-tings. These caterpillars feed on lush, tender grass/ plant leaves, primarily Bermuda grass, crabgrass, and sorghum / sudan type grasses in our area. Producers and landowners should look for fall armyworms throughout the growing season and to be ready to treat quickly when damaging infestations occur.

Fall armyworms are unpredictable pests. Some years, high populations do not occur until early fall. Other years, damaging infestations appear as early as June. I have observed army worms from May – December at various times over the past few years in South Mississippi.

Fall armyworm caterpillars vary in color depending on their stage of development and diet. Most are green or tan, but some can be dark brown to almost black, especially late in the year when numbers are high. The body is punctuated with dark spots, and mature caterpillars are about 1 1/2 inch long. Fall armyworm moths are about three-fourths of an inch long when resting with their wings folded. The forewings are gray to dark brown, but the underwings are white. You will not often see the moths unless you go out at night with a spotlight to look for them or happen to flush one from its daytime resting place.

Fall armyworm moths lay their eggs in clusters, eggs hatch in 2–5 days, and the newly emerged larvae scatter out and begin feeding. They usually begin by feeding on the underside of the leaf blade. Their feeding habits result in tiny, white “windowpanes” in the leaf blades or a white frizzing of the leaf tips. Experienced producers watch for this white frosting or frizzing of the leaf tips as an early warning of fall armyworm infes-tation.

Caterpillars take about 14 days to complete their larval development, and it takes about a month to complete a generation. About 80 percent of total leaf consumption occurs in the last 2–3 days of the caterpil-lar stage. This is why fall armyworm damage can occur so quickly; grass that looked fine Friday morning can be nothing but stems by Monday afternoon.

There are several options for effective management of fall army worms. To find what best suits your situation please check out the following MSU Extension Publications: Fall Armyworms in Hayfields and Pas-tures; p2331, Control Insect Pests in and around the Home Lawn; p1858. Inside the Fall Armyworms publica-tion you will find a list of products labeled for control of fall armyworms. Read and follow all label direc-tions! You may also contact your local MSU Extension Office to discuss treatment options with your agent.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Mr Temple, a World War II veteran, adopted Shatzi from an animal shelter. The two were inseparable until Mr Temple passed away at the age of 98.

Shatzi was 14 and homeless, but he was such a happy, sociable little guy we knew there was another home in his future. A foster home was found and before long a wonderful family adopted him. Shatzi thrived for two years surrounded by love in his new home. He passed away in August, but we will always remember him.

Our volunteers are so grateful to those who have a heart for senior pets. When their owners pass away, these pets are often passed over for adoption, and some are euthanized by their deceased owners heirs. Yet they have so much to offer, and they can definitely bond with a new family. Shatzi brought us and his adoptive family so much joy and love. Please consider adopting a senior dog or cat if you are looking for a wonderful pet companion.
