PATHETIC CEO STATEMENT PUTS ALLSTATE INTO A CORNER

In the unforgiving world of insurance advertising, two actors stand out from the others enticing you to buy their products. Stephanie Courtney is the lead actress in the Progressive commercials while Dean Winters is Mayhem, the upfront spokesman for Allstate.

Both performers give cutting edge presentations in their roles. Especially Winters. A condition of stress“mayhem -” is personalized by the versatile Winters and neither company would want to lose their air personality.

Except Allstate, apparently. Following a successful, straight-on pitch from actor Dennis Hasbert years prior to Winters’ hiring, Allstate turned to Winters’ comedy to combat Progressive, a relatively smaller national brand before Courtney’s “Flo” hit the airwaves. And it’s worked for Allstate. Except now, their “woke” Board of Directors has decided that even the most heinous act on American soil since 9/11 needs to be placed in its “understanding and diversity” bucket and they’ve picked a real wuss to frame it for Allstate. We refer to the killing of 14 innocent civilians hours before the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Allstate CEO Tom Wilson, as anemic a corporate “leader” as the extreme left can muster, made a 30-second statement last week following the terrorist slaughter of 14 innocent locals and tourists in the French Quarter hours into the new year. No where in the statement was there any outrage, condemnation or mention of the acts of a coward. The words were presented in the lamest possible way by a “man” who makes between 16 and 19 million dollars a year heading up a company whose business mantra has been to make sure that the mayhem in life its customers face has been met head-on. Except that Wilson and his corporate masters have now told America that the mayhem message is just so much makeup and malarky.

When I was much younger, I was insured by Allstate for my car. An accident between my Toyota (then a relatively new product in the U.S) and an American vehicle left my car repairable while the Chrysler product was written off as totalled. The agent handling my case also had the other vehicle’s owner as a client and as fate would have it, our agent had been a veteran in the Pacific in World War Two. Like the pathetic statement by Wilson last week, my claim was gaslighted until I found out that my agent had been in the war and hated anything Japanese.

My response was to write to the president of Allstate, stating their “good hands people” had let this case fall through the cracks. Within ten days, I received a reply from the President, along with an apology and a copy of a letter to my agent to do his job and not let politics interfere. My case was settled in my favor shortly thereafter.

I wonder what that president would say to this gutless bastard Allstate CEO today. Perhaps Allstate has invited hundreds of millions of dollars in “cancel culture” policies to be just that. And the Board of Directors will see a new Chairman of the Board and the forced resignation of anyone who had anything to do with drafting or supporting Wilson’s message. We can only hope. Goodbye, Mayhem! Hello, Flo! -0-

PROTECT TENDER PLANTS DURING FREEZING WEATHER.

I think it’s safe to say that most people are looking to turn over a new leaf for the new year, but it looks like we will be turning over sheets and tarps to help protect semi-tropical and tropical plants growing in our home landscapes for the first full week of 2025.

The major distinction between temperate and tropical climates is cold weather. Temperate climates occur further away from the equator. Couple that with the fact that Earth rotates on a tilted axis as it revolves around the sun, and you can start to understand that being further away from the equator means that you are further from the warmth of the sun at certain times of the year. This is why it’s cooler during the winter months.

Plant species that evolved in tropical climates did so without freezing weather events. The environment never forced those species to develop traits that ensured winter survival because freezing temperatures didn’t exist in that area of the globe. Fast forward to current times where humans have explored and brought back plant species from all over the world to grow in their home landscapes. We have created a problem for ourselves. Tropical plants will not survive temperate climates. The modern-day gardener understands this concept and works to modify the growing environment so that their tropical plants can get through the winter season.

One way to achieve this is by simply moving container-grown plants into a protected space like a garage or enclosed porch. For those with no covered structure, a collection of container plants grouped next to a southward-facing wall of a larger structure will provide a couple of degrees of cold protection. Thoroughly irrigate those container plants the day before. Water is considered an insulator, so wet soil takes longer to freeze than dry soil. It is also recommended to irrigate in-ground landscape plants that can’t be easily moved inside. Add an extra layer of mulch to these plantings to help insulate the root zone.

Tender plants growing out in the landscape should be covered with a material that will trap and warm air during the day so that the inside temperature stays above 32 F during the night. Breathable products like bed sheets and frost cloth are ideal, but plastic sheeting and hurricane tarps will work. Cover desired plants will something large enough so that it reaches the ground. Secure the cover with unopened potting soil, mulch, or sandbags so that it doesn’t blow off during the night. Plastic sheeting and tarps will trap air much better and get much hotter if left on the following day. Remove and recover as the weather dictates.

Proper cold weather protection takes time and requires a bit of planning. Watch the local news report and look out for extended forecasts. Use the weather app on your smartphone to learn of average low temperatures. If you see a scenario where it is predicted to stay below 32°F for 6 or more hours, then you should cover tender plants in the landscape.

I don’t know about you but I am so glad that the holidays are over. The rushing around, the crowds, the headaches. I know I sound like a Scourge but 2024 was a very trying year. I PRAY 2025 will be better. It sure didn’t start out as a happy year for many. Let’s all pray for a better year.

Okay yall, so I am jumping over Valentine’s Day and heading right into Mardi Gras! This surface was actually for a 6 inch Christmas ornament which was perfect to convert into this cute little Mardi Gras Jester! I painted the entire surface with Deco Americana Coral Cloud. Traced on the pattern, based the top of the hat (hanger) with Antique Gold shaded Raw Sienna, the top part of hat Lavender, shaded purple, and the cuff Festive Green shaded Holly Green. The inside of the ears, around the face, inside the nose, under the hat brim, and to line the mouth with Dried Clay. The cheeks are Wild Berry, the eyes are white with black pupils with Indian Turquoise highlights. Dots of white on the pupils and cheeks. Lastly I glued tiny gold bells on the inside points of the hat. That’s a wrap. He is all ready for Mardi Gras! Well, that is my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine...Guess it might be Valentine’s. You just never know!

Well, just as the great Peter Finney would do at the end of the year, I thought we could have a little fun. So, I went online and bought me a “NEW” Crystal Ball from Temu!

So, here we go, folks, a 12-month gallop through the world of sports, courtesy of this magical ball that only cost me $2.99.

JANUARY: The New Year gets started pretty well as LSU finishes #1 in the Transfer Portal Rankings and sets up a year of no excuses! Bayou Bengals basketball has the men’s team getting better but still not there yet while the women are not winning pretty but still winning... In the NFL, the Saints lose to the Bucs which gets Tampa Bay in the Playoffs and New Orleans a Top 10 pick in this year’s draft. A few weeks later, Owner Gayle Benson, holds a press conference where Mickey Loomis moves higher up in the administration as Jeff Ireland is named General Manager and immediately takes over the head coaching search. The Commanders, Vikings and the Eagles move onto Divisional Round in the NFC while the Texans, Steelers and Bills move on in the AFC. Detroit and Washington meet up in a surprise NFC title game with the Lions moving onto their 1st Super Bowl. While the Bills and Chiefs clash for an epic AFC Title game with the Bills upsetting and ending the Kansas City reign.

FEBRUARY: In New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, the world gets to see the resilience of the city as the highly anticipated matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills ends with a Lions Championship and another heart-breaking Bills loss. Moments after announcing Barry Sanders as the ceremonious MVP, he announces he will now go to Disneyland! Shortly after Aaron Glenn accepts the head coaching position of the New Orleans Saints and keeps Klint Kubiak as Offensive Coordinator with Darren Rizzi also staying on as Associate Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator. Zion is seen walking, and the Pelicans are working trades for Brandon Ingram as the team is sitting in 9th place in the Western Conference. National Signing Day sees LSU finish off a recruiting class that has moved to #5 in the country. In his press conference, Coach Kelly says this is a year of no excuses and almost guarantees that the Bayou Bengals will win the SEC and play for a national title!

MARCH: LSU Baseball gets off to a very impressive start of the season with convincing wins over Omaha, DBU and Kansas State. LSU Softball fights early on and hits their stride to volt the Lady Tigers to Top 10 in the rankings with wins over UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, Utah & Notre Dame. March Madness hits big for Louisiana as McNeese, Southern, La Tech, UNO and Tulane make the men’s NCAA tournament. While on the women’s side, Nicholls, Southeastern, Southern and LSU make it in as well.

APRIL: Scottie Scheffler fires final-round 67 to beat John Rahm by 1 stroke to win The Masters while Tiger Woods’s and his son win the Pro-Am using all of Charlie’s shots to shoot course record of 61.... LSU gives Matt McMahon an ultimatum for next year as Boosters and Alumni want to re-hire Will Wade after his McNeese State Cowboys make a deep run to the Elite 8 and Wade gets National Coach of the Year. On the women’s side, Coach Kim Mulkey and her Lady Tigers surprise some as they are National Champs for the 2nd time in 3 years. In the NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans take a major reach and select Cam Ward #1 overall. LSU sees only 1 guy go in the 1st round with Will Campbell going #4 to the Patriots and new Head Coach Mike Vrabel. New Orleans trades back to get more picks and selects Boise State Running Back Ashton Jeanty at # 13, Texas Wide Receiver, Isaiah Bond at #24, Bowling Green Tight End Harold Fannin at 42 and Texas Safety Jahdae Barron at #49 just within the first 50 picks.

MAY: In a Kentucky Derby thriller, Gunmetal blows away the field... Two weeks later, Mo quality wins the Preakness. In a stunning twist, New Orleans news is all over a report of a delusional person on Bourbon Street tied to a chair with mardi gras beads. Turns out it is just Mayor Latoya Cantrell in her new role as correspondent for the New New Orleans News Service “City News”. Pelicans shock no one as they finally fire Willie Green and promote James Borrego. LSU has SEC Titles in both Baseball and Softball with Softball headed to OKC for another World Series and SLU captures a Super Regional berth as a Cinderella story to OKC.

JUNE: LSU wins their 2nd NCAA National Championship in Coach Jay Johnsons 4th Season and team heads to White House with President Trump Sporting a purple hat with gold Making College Sports Great Again writing.

JULY: Zion is wondering the streets. New York Knicks win title and Spike Lee rejoices only to find out it was only a dream and the Celtics actually won!

AUGUST: LHSAA & MHSAA have schools gearing up and the LHSAA announces no more split between select and non-select. While LSU wins their 1st season opener in the under Brian Kelly defeating Clemson 34-17 in the Death Valley Bowl.

SEPTEMBER: LSU is 4-0 after starting season with 3 more victories over La Tech, Florida & Southeastern. Tulane has big wins over both Ole Miss & Memphis to start off 4-0, Ole Miss is 0-4 and Miss. State is 3-2 after losing to 2024 playoff contenders Arizona State and Tennessee. Derek Carr has Saints Un-defeated and averaging 40 pts/game.

OCTOBER: Garrett Nussmeier has LSU rolling at 8-0, Coach Kiffin has Ole Miss at 2-5 while Stark Vegas has had their lights dimmed sitting at 3-5 after losing all games in the month. The Saints Offense is unstoppable while the defense is proving to be impenetrable as they also remain undefeated!

NOVEMBER: LSU closes out

with

, pg 4 foe Oklahoma, Tulane also finishes undefeated 11-0, Ole Miss goes 4-7 while Miss. State is 5-7 and Egg Bowl Winners. The Saints finally lose a game and then reel off 2 more wins!

DECEMBER: LSU beats Texas 35-14 to defeat Arch Manning and heads to the CFP 12 team playoff also with Tulane who won their own conference Championship. Garrett Nussmeier is a Heisman Finalist but loses to teammate Whit Weeks who becomes only the 2nd primary defensive player to win the award. Also, the LHSAA Championships return to the Superdome highlighted by St Augustine winning their 1st State Championship in 45 years. Not to mention in the MHSAA, Gulfport wins a title as the Gulf Coast has 3 teams make championship games!

Obviously, most of this would be an amazing dream let us all hope that 2024 is just as good if not better than 2023 sports wise and everyone stays healthy, and we treasure those around us!

Tony’s Take

LION EYES - AIN’T NO WAY TO STOP THEIR SUPER BOWL QUEST

It was 66 years ago -ten years before Super Bowls were createdsince the Detroit Lions won an NFL championship. Long before Gordon Berry convinced a handful of brothers and sisters to record in a nondescript Detroit home, thus creating Motown Records and the “Motown Sound”. Years before Asian automotive know-how and Detroit indifference allowed Michigan’s biggest city to control the world’s automotive industry. Even before the Edsel and just two years after the Thunderbird began production. A long time ago.

I was just 13 when my Dad and I got two tickets to watch the Lions play our San Francisco 49ers in Kezar Stadium located at the end of Golden Gate Park. The Lions and 49ers had split their home-andhome series and both wound up 8 and 4. Before high tech and over the top fanaticism took over the NFL, a simple coin toss allowed San Francisco to host what today would be an NFC Championship game. These co-winners of the Western Division would meet to determine which one would play the Cleveland Browns two weeks later in the NFL championship game (today’s Super Bowl). That game would be played in the Western Division winner’s city.

The five dollar tickets were halfway up the west end zone on that early December Sunday. The 49ers were led by former LSU quarterback Y.A. Tittle and the Million Dollar backfield of Hugh McElhenny, Tittle, Joe Perry and John Henry Johnson while the Lions had Blazing Saddles star Alex Karras and quarterback Bobby Layne among their great roster players.

The Lions won the game when Y.A. Tittle was pulled after two interceptions and following a leg injury in the 3rd quarter. A 27 to 14 lead evaporated in less than 24 minutes and the Lions won the game, 31 to 27. Two weeks later, the Lions ran Cleveland, led by future superstar Jim Brown, out of Detroit’s stadium with a resounding 56 to 14 beating, the second worst NFL showdown ever. That’s been Detroit’s only NFL Shining Moment until this year.

If last weekend’s game is any indication, the Lions will vindicate three generations of Detroit sports fans as they either beat the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs or Baltimore Ravens in the 59th Super Bowl in New Orleans. Winning the NFC should be easier, with the Lions running all over Minnesota last weekend and only having Philadelphia as a real threat to stay with Detroit. The Lions have become the best non-lucky pro football team in 2024, having lost most of their defensive starters to injuries during the season. Kansas City would be, at best, 9 and 7 without Patrick Mahomes and both Baltimore and Buffalo have been too inconsistent the past two months.

Philadelphia’s team is the Eagles but without Don Henley and Glen Frey, theirs is a Desperado attempt to beat Dan Campbell and Detroit. Campbell won’t Take It Easy on Philly and One of These Nights soon, Detroit will win its first major football title since Elvis Presley ruled the airwaves. The Lions will join The King again and I guess that will make them The Lions /King. Detroit will Take It To The Limit to try and win this game and for the AFC, it will be A Heartache Tonight. But Detroit won’t care. After the game, they will be Already Gone, having A Peaceful Easy Feeling and anticipating A Long Run of future Lion championships. Already for 2026 and 2027 at Levis Stadium and SoFi Stadium, respectively, the ream allegedly has made Super Bowl reservations for rooms at these Hotel California.

REFLECT & MAKE PLANS FOR A NEW GARDENING YEAR

Happy New Year! As we embark on a new year, gardeners and plant enthusiasts alike are gearing up for a fresh season of growth, color and the promise of a bountiful harvest.

Whether you’re a seasoned green-thumb gardener or a novice with dreams of a flourishing garden, the new year is the perfect time to sow the seeds of your botanical aspirations. Let’s explore essential tips and resolutions to help you cultivate a vibrant and thriving garden in the coming months.

Before you plunge hands first into the soil, take a moment to reflect on your successes and challenges of the past growing season. Consider what worked well and what could be improved.

Use this reflection as a foundation for your gardening resolutions and plans for the new year.

What do you hope to achieve with your garden this year? Whether it’s enhancing curb appeal, growing your own vegetables, creating a haven for pollinators or simply enjoying a more colorful landscape, clearly define your goals. Setting specific objectives will guide your plant choices and gardening activities.

I always like to make the new year an opportunity to diversify my garden.

If you feel like trying something new, explore new plant varieties, colors and textures to add interest and complexity to your outdoor space. Consider incorporating native plants that are well-suited to your region. This promotes biodiversity and supports the local ecosystems.

Another preparation to make is to develop a planting calendar tailored to your local climate and growing zone.

Research the optimal times for planting different types of plants, considering frost dates, temperature fluctuations and seasonal changes. This strategic approach makes it possible for you to create a garden that remains in a constant state of bloom and productivity.

Healthy soil is the foundation for a thriving garden; be sure to conduct a soil test to assess its composition and nutrient levels.

Based on the results, amend your soil with nutrients and organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. Healthy soil provides the necessary nutrients and structure for plants to flourish.

Consider making a commitment to incorporate some sustainable practices in your garden. You can reduce your environmental footprint by composting kitchen and garden waste, using organic fertilizers or minimizing the use of chemical pesticides.

These steps can help you create a garden that not only flourishes aesthetically but also harmonizes with the natural ecosystem.

Gardening is a journey of continuous learning. Dedicate time to expand your horticultural knowledge through books, online resources and local gardening events. Stay informed about new gardening techniques, plant varieties and sustainable practices. This allows you to evolve as a knowledgeable and skilled gardener.

Remember the Mississippi State University Extension Service has offices in every county and staff to assist you in becoming a successful gardener. Visit your local Extension office to see what resources are available to you.

I truly believe that with thoughtful planning, sustainable practices and a spirit of continuous learning, you’ll cultivate a garden that not only thrives in the new year but also brings joy and fulfillment every season. Happy gardening!

HOLIDAY HAZARDS: UN-DECORATING FOR YOUR PETS

While festive decorations and holiday treats make the season more joyful, the remnants of those delights can pose serious risks for our pets. So, as we wrap up this year’s Christmas, it is important to keep our pets’ safety top of mind.

Dismantling your Christmas Decorations

Decorating a Christmas tree is fun, but the takedown can be a hassle. As you slowly work to remove all the gorgeous adornments, be mindful of any ornaments or lighting broken during the tree stripping process. Fragments from broken ornaments and Christmas lighting, if ingested, can lead to serious internal complications in our pets requiring immediate surgery. The best way to combat any unwanted sharp ingestions is by quickly vacuuming the area where either object broke. Also, watch out for any droppings of holly or mistletoe as you take down your festive centerpieces. Although a dash of these floral favorites can spice up your decorating game, they are extremely toxic to our pets if swallowed and can even cause kidney failure in our kitty friends.

Properly Disposing of Holiday Goodies

Though that delicious holiday feast isn’t on display anymore, that won’t stop our furry friends from finding the goods one way or another. No matter how tempting, always take extra time to properly dispose of any food scraps and foil wrappings when the big meal is over. Leftover items such as heavily seasoned foods, unemptied alcoholic beverages, or desserts like fruitcakes or chocolates can cause serious digestive issues and poisoning in our pets.

Opening your Home for the New Year

In addition to safety, consider fostering a shelter pet this season. Fostering provides a loving environment and helps pets show their true personalities, increasing their chances of finding a forever home. It’s a wonderful way to share the joy of the season as we enter the new year.

Happy Endings Start with Safety

With these precautions top of mind when removing the glitz and glow of the season, we can ensure our pets make it to the next holiday gathering happy and healthy.

Interested in fostering or volunteering with the Louisiana SPCA this new year, visit our website at www. louisianaspca.org or give us a call at (504) 368-5191 to learn more.
