Start with Baltimore. Two Super Bowl wins, mostly from defensive superiority, one twelve years ago in New Orleans against San Francisco, the 49ers sixth Big Game appearance and their first loss. Close.

Colin Kaepernick’s last hurrah in a poorly executed first and goal series five yards from a San Francisco win….the last time Kaepernick would ever have his football chops reviewed from a performance, not a political, standpoint. But then the Baltimore Ravens began ravin’ about post-season losses to other AFC teams, Five times the Ravens failed to reach the Super Bowl in the past twelve years of playoffs, losing twice to Super Bowl teams from their conference.

They are favored Sunday to end that frustration streak at five against the most current successful post season team, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs lost the very first Super Bowl to Green Bay in 1967 and then won their next three appearances. The Chiefs have maintained their superiority over the Buffalo Bills, keeping the Bills as professional football’s most frustrated post season team of all time with four consecutive Super Bowl losses and no wins. It happened again this week when Buffalo missed a game-tying field goal try with less than two minutes in the game. Like the Dallas Cowboys, for the Bills it’s “wait ’til next year….again.”

For Kansas City, there is no revenge factor. There’s only the Patrick Mahomes Factor and unless Lamar Jackson of the Ravens can outfactor Mahomes, Baltimore will sit home on Super Bowl Sunday.

not played in a championship game. However, it was 1957 that provided the most frustration for this writer. And a hope for revenge 66 years later.

It was the Sunday before Christmas in 1957 when the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions met at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. A sunny, cool day, the Niners and the Lions had split their home and home series during the year and both had a record of 8 and 4. In those non-sophisticated days of professional football, a coin flip determined where the teams would play to decide who would win the Western Conference title. The winner then would host the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Browns, led by their soon to be immortal rookie running back, Jim Brown, two weeks afterwards, for the NFL championship.

My father, never a pro football fan, had taken me to a few 49er games starting a year or two before. He decided he would take me to the Western Conference playoff championship. He bought $6.00 tickets in the middle rows of the upper west end zone and we watched as former LSU quarterback Y.A. Tittle led the 49ers to a 24 to 7 halftime lead that continued and increased to 27 to 7 into the third quarter. But then Tittle suffered a broken leg after a series of interceptions and backup 49er rookie quarterback John Brodie was ineffective in his time for the rest of the game. The 49ers lost 31 to 27. My mother had been standing in line at a local grocery store,second from the front, for more than four hours prior and during the game, waiting to buy two $10 tickets to the NFL championship game to be played after New Years Day. Her attitude was not one of consolation or disappointment when Dad and I came home. She totally did not understand a thing about sports on any level and her one-sentence greeting to me as I dragged by totally devastated body into the house cannot be repeated in this column. She didn’t believe in wasting time and her efforts that December 22nd were, in her eyes, totally wasteful. Two weeks later, the Detroit Lions demolished the Cleveland Browns in Detroit, 59 to 14. I think the 49ers would have accomplished the same results at Kezar but it would have to wait 24 more years until the magic team of Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, Dwight Clark and Ronnie Lott would win the first of five Super Bowls for the City By the Bay. I wish no ill will for the Lions. But my feelings from the evening of December 22nd, 1957, call out for the 49ers to win Sunday night in Santa Clara. They will be favored. And if it happens, then the revenge factor will come into play. San Francisco’s two Super Bowl losses came at the hands of Baltimore and Kansas City. A win against either team would suffice and San Francisco would win its sixth Super Bowl, tying them with New England and Pittsburgh for the most wins.

The Arctic blast of 2024 moved through the area January 15-17 and a lot of folks received long periods below 32°F. Tropical and semi-tropical plants Will Afton like bird of paradise, bougainvillea, citrus, copper plant, Chinese hibiscus, dipladenia , ginger, heliconia, mandevilla, and tibouchina (princess flower) put on a amazing show all throughout our long growing season. However, they didn’t evolve in the temperate climate of the Southeast United States. They originated in areas that never received freezing temperatures therefore these and other tropical plants don’t have ways to defend themselves when the water inside plants cells freezes solid.

The immediate effect of cold damage on a tropical plant resembles wilting. That is because when cells freeze solid, the volume of the cell expands and, in most cases, causes the cell wall to split. This allows cytoplasm to leak and reduces the structural integrity of the entire system. The wilt caused by cold weather will never return to normal because the cells have the irreparably damaged. The wilted tissue will eventually start to break down and rot. This effect can be seen directly after temperatures rise above 32°F following the cold weather event.

Once cold weather moves through the area most of us get stir crazy and want to get out and start doing things. There are a few things that you can do after a freeze event to stay active with managing your plants and helping them through cold periods. Once daily temperatures rise above 32ºF, you can remove the coverings. Leaving frost protection on plants for too long after cold weather leaves the area impedes photosynthesis by blocking sunlight and concentrating oxygen in the canopy. You can also move your container plants back to their respective locations after fear of cold has passed.

A lot of folks want to get out and start pruning out frost affected plant parts. Give the plants 1-2 weeks before pruning out symptomatic tissue. The reason being is that these plants are tropical and will start growing as soon as the temperatures warm back up. Pruning will stimulate growth and pruning too much too early might set up a failure if another round of freezing temperatures is expected. It’s also wise to wait a couple of weeks so that you can observe the extent of the damage. This is especially the case with our commercial citrus producers. They will do their pruning in early summer to help offset the labor costs of sending a crew out the second time because more cold damage appeared as the plants started growing into the summer. If improving aesthetics is the goal, prune out dead plants parts down to living tissue. You can perform a more vigorous pruning application on tropical plants such as hibiscus, tibouchina, ixora, and angel trumpet later in spring when you start to see new growth in the spring. At that time you should prune each branch down to green, living tissue.

Just before the fall semester ended, we were told about another press conference was expected on November 30th to hire our next full-time coach.

We asked for cooler temperatures and we have certainly been getting them. I wonder how many of us who couldn’t wait for winter to get here are now wishing for Spring and Summer. I for one believe we should have four seasons but we live in Louisiana, we jump from Summer right into Winter! And this coming week we will be back in the 70’s for a few days. Gotta love it! Wonder what temperatures will be like for Easter since it falls on 31 March this year.

Well, guess I am going to be all over the place with my holidays. I really haven’t painted a lot for St. Patrick’s Day in the past. It is just one of those holidays I don’t think that much about. But I saw the cutest design and had the urge to paint it. I really like the way the different colors of green show up on the black background. Although the Festive Green actually took four coats to show up the way I wanted it to.

There are 3 round balls on the bottom of it for legs. Wouldn’t a small bud vase with white rose sitting on this be too adorable? Or the design painted on coasters to set your favorite green beer on. Or even painted on a 12 inch heart to hang on your front door to welcome all your St. Patrick’s Day guests. The uses for this design are endless and so much fun to paint!

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine......a chilly winter scene or a warm Easter project? I don’t really know. But I know it will be fun!

When LSU fired DiNardo with one game left in 1999, administrators already had a list of coaching candidates they wanted to pursue. But Nick Saban wasn’t originally on it. He was a Bill Belichick disciple who worked as Belichick’s defensive coordinator for four seasons with the Cleveland Browns and had been a college head coach for six seasons, including five at Michigan State. There, he was basically a .500 coach in his first four seasons before posting a 9–2 record in 1999. When DiNardo got fired at LSU, Saban had interest in the job for one reason: For years the state of Louisiana had produced more NFL players per capita than any state in the nation. Saban saw a rich recruiting base waiting to be plucked.

The rumor eventually came out that it would indeed be the guy that we had beaten 45-26 just 4 years prior in the Independence Bowl.

There was a ton of skepticism on whether this West Virginia born guy who was just 10 games over .500 at Michigan State a Big Ten School. We were informed it would be Nick Saban, a former NFL assistant, who just guided the No. 10 Spartans to second place in their conference and a spot in the Florida Citrus Bowl, their first Jan. 1 game since the 1989 Gator Bowl.

Any skepticism was quickly put aside at the introductory press conference. Introduced by then Athletic Director Joe Dean, Saban took the podium and immediately showed the passion that the LSU fan base had been waiting years to welcome.

“Thank you very much. The first thing I’d like to say to Tiger fans everywhere, to the players who have made the tradition of Tiger football what it is today, whether you played for Charley Mac, Jerry Stovall, Paul Dietzel, Bill Arnsparger or any other coach who they played for, this is your team, this is your program, and I’m very happy to be your coach.

NEW NAME FOR COWBOYS - PHALLUS COWGIRLS - AFTER LATEST CHOKE America’s Team. The term grated on the collective minds of millions of professional football fans after the already arrogant collection of East Texas football players won their first Super Bowl. America’s Team my ass!

No more than the Yankees were America’s Team or The Boston Celtics or the Chicago Bears.

America’s Team. Like baseball....hot dogs....apple pie....and a famous automaker’s most popular brand. No way. Dallas was a cow town, a bit more sophisticated than Fort Worth, bigger than Cheyenne but also the place where President Kennedy was gunned down more than 60 years ago. A collection of dominos-playing, oil well drilling, East Coast lusting, rhinestone-wearing wannabes, repleate in Roy Rogers outfits and Nocona boots.

America’s Team. Then reality struck. After Jimmy Johnson’s two Super Bowls in the 1990’s, after the days and plays of Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman, and a defense that could scare people motionless, the Dallas Cowboys came back into the pack, then became nostalgia....and now have become a joke, a punchline with little punch, an undisciplined group led by a talented but tainted quarterback (2nd team All Pro, in front of Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen?) and a badly overrated defense led by only two players that could start for any other NFL team (Parsons and Bland).

I think we need to pull all those things together that LSU has to offer in terms of support and tradition so that we have the best chance to be successful because I think that togetherness, especially with the high school level of talent and play, that you really have a chance to be successful, and that’s what intrigued me about this job.

Our mission statement has always been that we want our players to be successful and people first, secondly as students, to get a good education and graduate school, and third we would like every player to develop to their full potential and play for a championship, and last to pull together all the resources that LSU has to offer and help every player after he leaves here to launch his career.

When I think of LSU football, I still think of Chinese bandits, I still think of playing hard and relentless competitors, and great defense. I can promise you our goal objective is to have that kind of team. I think that we should always be in the top 25, and I certainly think that we want to win our conference, and play in the championship game there, and if you do that, you’re very close to being one of the top teams in the country.

Those are the goals and objectives that we’re going to have here, and I think we’re going to have a great product. You have to know what your competition is and you have to eliminate derision from within, and I think that is the biggest cancers to a program. Everybody has to have a common goal, and everybody has to pull together to reach that goal.

That’s the way I’ve been able to be successful in other endeavors, and certainly I would hope that we can provide the kind of leadership that will enable us to be successful here because of our ability to work together as a team!”

Oh, they still have their billionaire oil baron owner, Jerry Jones, whose ego required him to lay out his beautiful stadium east to west, paralleling two interstates, so people driving by could oooh! and aaaahh! while the fans and the players have to endure a vision-killing setting sun several times per year coming through the west end zone glass. Jerry does put on the finest table for the media (prime rib in the press box and the best macaroni and cheese in the league) but if a game is determined by an architechural anomaly, what good is it?

Coach Saban then opened up to media questions.

Located in the heart of Arlington ( a joke, son), Jerry’s World is a logistics nightmare, with alleged traffic control under the underqualified direction of the Arlington Police Department. The same lack of control can be found game day in the stadium, where the heretofore undefeated at home Cowboys go their heads, hearts and heinnies handed to them by the Green Bay Packers. The “You Betchas!” bushwhacked the “Yee Haws!” by 16 points as the listless Dallas sidelines looked like it had been fed a week’s worth of saltpeter (you can look it up).

Saban earned $697,330 a year at Michigan State. His contract at LSU calls for a base salary of $250,000, with the balance coming in radio, TV and Internet appearances, plus other pay.

Phallus -rhymes with Dallas. Except the former term denotes virility and power, hardness and strength. All passe’ terminology for the now impotent NFL entry from northeast Texas. Year 29 and counting since the term “America’s Team” even got any person’s blood boiling or the team into a Super Bowl. An overrated fan base of even bigger wannabes (or never weres) buying CeeDee Lamb jerseys.

Ironic. The Lamb, the symbol of nonaggression is now the best player on the Dallas team. At LSU, Saban ran the state’s top college football program. At Michigan State, he was always in the shadow of Michigan.

“It was always UM this or that,” he said. “If I’d gone to Ohio it would have been Ohio State; Indiana it’s Purdue; Chicago it’s every other school in the Big Ten. In the East it’s Penn State. Wherever you go you’re looking at someone else when you’re recruiting, trying to catch up, trying to convince someone you’re up there.”

Saban was at Michigan State for 10 years, first as the defensive coordinator and the last five years as head coach. While none of his assistants followed him from Michigan State, though he offered four of them jobs. He immediately put together an all-star staff that during his LSU years included future head coaches Jimbo Fisher (Florida State, Texas A&M), Will Muschamp (Florida, South Carolina), Kirby Smart (Georgia), Mel Tucker (Colorado), Derek Dooley (Tennessee), and Freddie Kitchens (Cleveland Browns).

What he did with his staff was save the Tigers’ football program with a national championship, two SEC titles, and a 48–16 record (.750) in five seasons from 2000 to 2004 before chasing an NFL dream as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. He arrived at a time when LSU was thirsting for success, stability, and a coach with his sights set on the elements required to build and sustain a national power.

Saban never won fewer than eight games in each of his five seasons. He had three bowl wins, one of which was the BCS national title game victory in the Sugar Bowl over Oklahoma. His SEC Championship Game victories came against Tennessee and Georgia. That win against the Vols in the 2001 league title tilt was the victory that lit the fuse for LSU’s national championship run two years later. LSU had lost at Tennessee 26–18 earlier in the 2001 season. By the time the teams met again in the Georgia Dome, the No. 2–ranked Vols were a win away from advancing to the Rose Bowl and playing for the national championship. But despite the Tigers losing starting quarterback Rohan Davey and leading rusher LaBrandon Toefield with injuries in the first half, LSU roared back from a 17–7 deficit to score a 31–20 upset.

Two seasons later, after four superb recruiting classes, Saban’s 13–1 Tigers delivered the school’s first national championship since 1958 by beating Oklahoma 21–14. “The 2003 team had so much character that it didn’t need a leader,” Saban said. “They thought they would win the championship long before I did.” As a result of winning the national title, Saban landed the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class. It was a class that would help Les Miles, the next LSU coach, win a national championship in 2007.

At the end of the 2004 season, a heartbreaker came on Christmas Day as a contract for $5 million per year and promised control of player personnel decisions lured Saban to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

“I learned from that experience in hindsight was, it was a huge mistake to leave college football,” Saban said in May 2019. “And I know a lot of LSU fans think I left for whatever reasons, but I left because I wanted to be a pro coach, or thought I wanted to be a pro coach. We loved LSU. We worked hard to build the program. If there was one thing professionally that I would do over again, it would’ve been not to leave LSU.” He didn’t just leave LSU. He left LSU and brought success to an SEC opponent, ten-fold. It was the ultimate betrayal, and it’s been relived over and over again since 2007.

“I couldn’t believe the response and the attitude people had toward me,” Saban said. “I felt like there were a lot of questions, a lot of doubts. You have to understand. I was coming from a place [Michigan State] where the people were pretty happy over what had been done. I was shocked. I was thinking, Maybe I ought to go back where I came from.” Thankfully for LSU, not only did he not leave but he embraced the culture, the university, the team, the state and the people. Although, we have been angered over a good bit of costly losses to his very hands, we would be remised to say that LSU alums and fans everywhere owe Coach Saban a heartfelt tip of the straw hat!

PROTECTING PLANTS FROM COLD TEMPERATURES

Although we live in south Mississippi, winter sometimes brings cold temperatures that can cause severe damage to many of our landscape plants. A late freeze after the temperature rises in January or February could cause more damage than the same cold temperature in winter when these plants have become dormant and more resistant to changes in temperature. An example is the sudden drop in temperature in late March of 2023 that killed or severely damaged many plants after they had begun budding out due to warmer temperatures in February and early March.

A plant’s ability to withstand cold temperatures depends on plant species, and how low and how fast tempera- tures decrease. When temperatures gradually decrease, a plant can acclimate to withstand colder temperatures better. Plants that break bud dormancy due to warmer temperatures become more susceptible to late frost because of their new, tender growth. Cold injury can occur to all parts of the plant but, fruits and flowers are the least tolerant of cold injury because they have little abil- ity to adjust or build up tolerance to colder temperatures. Leaf and stem tissues are injured and damaged when ice forms within the plant’s cells causing the tissue to die, which typically oc- curs during a rapid freeze. Hardy or cold-acclimated plants can often withstand this type of ice formation. Windy conditions can also cause plant damage by desiccation, or the drying out of the plant. Desiccation causes marginal or leaf-tip burn or totally brown leaves in severe cases and occurs when a plant loses more water than it absorbs, especially when the ground is frozen.

The best way to prevent cold injury to plants is to choose plants that tolerate the cold temperatures in our area. Mississippi is in USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 7b, 8, and 9a with the southern and coastal areas of Mississippi being either Zone 8b (15–20 degrees F) or Zone 9a (20–25 degrees F). In addition to proper plant selection, proper site selection is essential. During the winter, the coldest spots are often found on the north and northwest parts of the property and in low areas where cold air settles. The warm- est spots are usually on the southern part of the property.

Maintaining proper plant nutrition also helps protect your plants from cold damage. A plant that has been given the appropriate nutrition tolerates cold temperatures, withstands sudden temperature drops, and recovers from cold dam- age better than plants that are nutritionally deficient. If you’re unsure of current nutrition levels a soil test may be appro- priate. Be sure to pay attention to potassium levels. Potassium is an important element for cold weather protection and other stresses (heat, drought, disease, etc). Keep in mind, fertilizing plants in the fall (after August or September) with a fertilizer high in nitrogen can result in a flush of new growth that is more susceptible to cold temperatures. Pruning plants in late summer or early fall can also result in new growth that can be susceptible to cold injury. You can remove any damaged areas once the threat has passed. Don’t mistake damaged with dormancy so wait until the plant begins leafing out to see what needs to be removed.

absorbs more heat and then radiates heat, helping to increase the elevated temperature around the plants. Plants that grow close to the ground usually have more protection by heat radiating from the soil than plants that are tall and more open. Poorly drained soils result in plants that have weak and shallow roots, which are more susceptible to cold injury. Use mulch to help retain soil moisture.

You can temporarily volcano mulch to help protect graft areas but be sure to remove the excess as soon as possible.

Cold injury to Gardenia

Protect plants that are in containers either by placing them inside a protective structure (house, garage, green- house) or by placing a protective covering over them. Container plants are more susceptible to cold temperatures than a similar plant growing in the ground. Roots that are damaged by cold temperatures may not show immediate signs of damage, but these plants will show signs of stress when temperatures increase. Push together container plants that are left outside, and mulch or cover them to decrease heat loss from the sides of the containers.

Wrap the bases of the containers in plastic, burlap, or blankets to reduce heat loss.

Covering your plants helps protect them from frost as well as from extremely cold temperatures.

Covers that reach the ground and do not come in contact with foliage form a layer of insulation from the cold temperature. To prevent foliage breakage, avoid having the covers (sheets, blankets) touch the foliage. Remember to remove these protective coverings from the plant canopy after cold temperatures have passed. The new year has brought us many reasons to be thankful. Here are two of them, Eris and Bob. Eris was abandoned by his former owners on a busy street. Spotted by a START volunteer, Eris was rescued, and taken to a foster home. Asult cats, even handsome tuzedos like Eris,,ofren take longer to place because many people prefer kittens. Eris waited patiently. Finally, his forever home came along. We are so happy for our sweet boy, Eris!
