NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this special one. Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days and your favor will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.T.O.

Tony’s Take GRUESOME NEWSOM’S LEGACY OF DESTRUCTION

He is a pretty boy, surfer cut and SoCal cool. Maybe the coolest looking dude to populate Los Angeles since the chisteled and Kirk Douglas look-alike, Otis Chandler, the Olympic quality shot putter with the build of a middle linebacker. I had the honor of meeting that journalistic giant and publisher of The Los Angeles Times when I worked for the New York Times Western Edition in Los Angeles in 1962. The New York paper would receive its photos from the Los Angeles Times in downtown LA and I, as the youngest copy boy at the Western Edition, was sent to retrieve the photos and bring them to my paper, located in a one-story weekly shopper newspaper in mid-town LA. I was in an elevator in the Los Angeles Times building when Chandler walked in, introduced himself and started asking me questions about myself and the N.Y. Times. it was a short meeting but memorable to me, barely 18, a year before America lost what innocence it had after the Kennedy assassination in 1963.

But this story is not about Chandler but Gavin Newsom, the wanna-be influencer and shadow of a man like Chandler who once, as publisher of the Los Angeles Times, canceled afternoon meetings one day to go surfing when the surf was up with15-foot breakers at a local surfing beach. Newsom probably has never touched a surfboard, a ho-dad dreamer and certainly not the body builder, power broker or moral pillar Chandler was.

In short, Los Angeles took it up the you-know-what when horrific wildfires decimated much of the northwest hills and beach communities up the coast from the Los Angeles basin. And California Governor Gavin Newsom, as the so-called leader of the country’s formerly greatest state, doesn’t have enough gravitas or conviction to do anything about it. Neither do the Mayor, Fire Chief, other “leaders” in LA-LA-Land - they just don’t have what it takes to turn things around. They’ve gotten so sensitive out there, doing everything to enable those with differences or difficulties to get a virtual free pass, that their brothers and sisters, along with the vast majority of mainstream Americans, have been plowed under, using the David Geffen and Disney power bases to dismantle a city so beckoning that it would make most people cry if they ever left it. I had 2 1/2 years to appreciate this town, even as a San Franciscan, where we NorCals would look down our noses at L.A. We thought they were just a motley crew of Americans who wound up living there after the Depression, Dust Bowl and World War Two. But they were more than that, thousands of hard-working mainstream Americans who found their dreams among the hills, beaches and forests of the greater Los Angeles region.

Notice that very little has been said about Newsom. The Governor suffered a childhood with dyslexia and attended private schools in San Francisco and in Massachusetts. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 and got into politics when then San Francisco Mayor Willie placed him on a commission board and then as a San Francisco Supervisor before Newsom ran for Supervisor and then Mayor on his own. The same is true of his two terms as San Francisco’s Mayor. But the palatable feel of wanting to do better in the City By The Bay was steered by Newsom’s studies that inspired liberal and sometimes controversial change in The City, like changing the name of Army Street to Cesar Chavez Boulevard in 1995. Somewhere, Newsom lost his desire to simplify life for businesses and instead imposed strong restrictions on the city and then the state, especially during the Covid years.

Now Newsom has to wait until Donald Trump rescues him and the hundreds of thousands of Los Angelenos who are suffering as I write this piece. Armageddon has reached Los Angeles. God help them.

Words to GREAUX by

LATE WINTER PRUNING SEASON

February is historically our coldest month of the year, but it still falls directly after January making it one month closer to spring. As we prepare our landscapes for the oncoming growing season, February is a great time to prune deciduous plants including landscape trees, fruit trees, and roses. It is also a great time to prune summer-blooming plants like ornamental grasses, butterfly bush, and vitex. Spring-blooming plants like azalea, gardenia, and blueberry are pruned in summer after they have flowered or fruited.

Deciduous and Fruit Trees

Deciduous trees such as crapemyrtles and shade trees along with fruit trees like apples, peaches, and even citrus should all be pruned this month.

On young shade trees remove any damaged limbs. If the top has been broken, be sure to prune it in such a way that the tree will produce and maintain one central leader branch.

Fruit trees such as apples, peaches, plums, and nectarines should be pruned to keep them lower to the ground. Always start to remove dead branches. Thin the canopy to allow for good air movement. Commercial growers like to prune an “open center”. The central leader is removed, and 3 to 4 trunks (scaffolding branches) are allowed to take over, leaving the middle open to allow for airflow and light penetration.

Citrus trees don’t require much but I suggest removing any branches that grow downward towards the ground. Remove branches that grow straight up to control the height of the plant and thin out the canopy.

Roses

Valentine’s Day, February 14, is a calendar reminder to get out and prune rose bushes. For shrub roses use hedge sheers to remove up to two-thirds of the plant. Don’t be hesitant, good healthy plants will respond well to this type of pruning.

For hybrid tea roses and other hybridized types, use selective cuts with sharp hand pruners to remove up to two-thirds of the plant. Start by locating the main supporting canes and remove about half to two-thirds of the previous season’s growth. Always cut at an angle right above a node, being careful not to damage the node. Next, remove any branch that grows back into the bush from wherever it originated.

Beginning from the start of pruning through mid-March, apply fertilizer to your rose bushes. Different fertilizers will provide nutrients over various amounts of time. Follow recommendations on a soil test report. If using a general fertilizer product, read the label for application instructions and frequency. Hybrid tea rose growers should start planning a spray schedule to manage black spot disease.

Chlorothalonil and propiconazole are both listed to control black spots on roses and will be marketed as general garden fungicides. Look to spray preventatively on new foliage as it grows and develops.

Who is not liking these freezing temperatures besides me? This Southern girl is ready for warmer temperatures. I would settle for 40’s at this point. I don’t do well in the cold. Don’t like super hot temperatures either but can tolerate those better than the cold. Stay warm everyone and I hope you didn’t experience any issues with water lines freezing.

Today’s project is by request and I am not quite finished with it so feel free to use your imagination. I had to dig deep into the creative memory, which hasn’t been challenged lately, on things I had of Patriotic designs. The designs I had on file just didn’t sit well with me today. I dug around my surface stash for inspiration and found this rectangular framed piece of wood and decided on it. With such an important event as a new President taking office, I totally agree something Patriotic is a must. Above the heart I plan painting the words God Bless and on the side left of the banner before the word America I plan on putting 20 and behind the word America I will put 25. I am also thinking of adding fireworks to the sky in the corners. But, that all depends on the placement of the words, “God Bless”.

Sorry I didn’t get to complete this one. I really was hoping to but preparing for the freeze and possible snow has stretched my time really thin.

Well, that’s it for this time. Hope you all are safe from this Winter storm. So, what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, how about that kid Jayden? I wish I could say it was a total shocker to watch the Washington Commanders defeat the Detroit Lions in Detroit, but my parlay slips say otherwise..haha!

Anyway, what that Washington win did was make the entire NFL coaching search go just a bit quicker, especially since most teams have both Ben Johnson & Aaron Glenn on the top of their search lists. Also, what it does is make things a bit clearer in the Big Easy as the rumors have flown that Glenn is one of the top candidates to go along with Buffalo Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady. Now, due to press time this article was written before the conclusion of the Ravens & Bills game. Therefore, if the Bills are still in and the Saints have not made the hire than that means all eyes point to Brady.

With all of that said, let’s take a look at the coaching carousel that the Saints have on their radar!

Aaron Glenn: Interview completed Jan. 10

Defensive Coordinator for the Detroit Lions. He previously served as the defensive backs coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2016 to 2020 and also served as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Glenn played 15 seasons in the NFL. During his playing time, Glenn played for the New York Jets, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints. He played college football for Texas A&M University.

*** Not completely sold on Glenn just yet but worthy of a shot!

Joe Brady: Interview completed Jan. 17

Offensive Coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 2020 to 2021.

He was a passing game coordinator and wide receiver coach for the LSU Tigers during the 2019 season, winning the Broyles Award for the best assistant coach in college football, and an offensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints from 2017 to 2018.

*** Brady is in LSU lore but is he wanting to take the leap to be the head man? Definitely, worthy of a shot!

Mike McCarthy: Scheduled for week of Jan. 20

Former Head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024. From 2006 to 2018, he was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. In 2011, McCarthy led the team to a win in Super Bowl XLV over his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also the Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

During his 17 seasons as a head coach in the NFL, McCarthy has an overall regular season record of 169–104–2. He is among only five head coaches (Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Andy Reid, and Bill Belichick) to lead one franchise to eight straight playoff appearances. McCarthy is second to Curly Lambeau in alltime wins leading the Packers.

*** McCarthy went into a lose-lose situation in Dallas. A change of scenery might be the fuel that he needs to get back on the winning track, worth a look!

Mike Kafka: Interview completed Jan. 9

Current Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the New York Giants. Kafka became the quarterbacks coach for the Chiefs in 2018, and Patrick Mahomes, the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, earned the NFL Most Valuable Player award that season. Kafka helped the team win Super Bowl LIV the following season.

*** Not sure we want to have anything to do with the Giants Organization, Hard Pass!

Anthony Weaver: Interview completed Jan. 8

Current Defensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

*** Dolphins have not lit the world on fire with their defense, Hard Pass!

Kellen Moore: Interview completed Jan. 18

Offensive Coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

*** Could be worth a look if other choices fall through but more than likely if the Cowboys don’t land Deion than Moore is their guy, Ehhh Maybe!

Darren Rizzi: Interview completed Jan. 17

Current Interim Head Coach for the New Orleans Saints after taking over from fired head coach Dennis Allen on November 4, 2024. He previously served as the Special Teams Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins from 2010 to 2018.

Prior to coaching in the NFL, Rizzi was the Head Coach at the University of New Haven from 1999 to 2001 and at the University of Rhode Island in 2008. He compiled an overall record of 18–23. Rizzi has previously served as an

Coach for the

continued from Just Sports, pg 4 University, the University of New Haven and Colgate University.

*** Rizzi proved that he could handle the position and if we can’t get the Top few choices to come on board than it would not be a disaster to see what he can do with him at the head of a new staff and personnel, Might have to!

Obviously, we all wish that Mickey Loomis would not be making any more decisions for this organization but he is, so here we are!

I personally would love Ben Johnson to be in New Orleans but so does every other city with an open head coaching position. I would definitely have to make him tell me no first! If that happens than I would want to stay on the offensive side of the ball and go after a young up and coming Offensive Coordinator in Joe Brady (same pedigree that Sean Payton had until we plucked him away to be the big dawg!)

However, if all else fails and your top 3 fall through than Rizzi is not a bad choice to at least give a full season or two to handle a re-build!

LION’S RISE (SUNG TO THE TUNE

OF THE EAGLE’S LYIN’ EYES)

It’s been nearly 60 years since we won, All the marbles in the NFL 20 coaches came and left except one, And that one, Dan Campbell, gives ‘em hell,

But watching Green Bay’s Packers and the Monsters Win the big ones four times in the past, Detroit’s Lions have been inside the Dumpster, Always seeming to come in dead last,

So they reached out for a rookie coach named Campbell, And things began to jell with Hutchinson, With Jared Goff the offense seemed to scramble, And surprise, surprise, the Lions won,

You can’t deny the Lions rise, They won the Central with no surprise, And by now, you realize, There’s just no way to stop the Lion’s rise

In the other NFL league, the coach is waiting, With a walrus mustache and his hopes for three, But Detroit fans are gathered, waiting, They’re hoping for a Lion’s victory,

They rush the field, the two teams come together, Mahomes keeps Kansas City up with style, However, miracles can’t last forever, And the Detroit defense winds up with a smile,

You can’t deny the Lion’s rise, They won the Central with no surprise, And by now, you realize, There’s just no way to stop the Lion’s rise -0-

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together… Author unknown…

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops & looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent.

What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected for my pets or my older family members?

In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions: Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

GARDEN RECOGNITIONS

With increased urbanization, homeowners have incorporated more wildlife friendly elements into their landscape. A balanced habitat creates a natural system of checks and balances by promoting a diverse wildlife population. A way to encourage a wildlife friendly landscape is to acquire recognitions for your garden.

One option is to become a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation. With this certification your wildlife garden should include food, cover, water, places to raise young, and be maintained through sustainable practices. For more information on becoming a Certified Wildlife Habitat, visit https://www.nwf.org/Native-Plant-Habitats/ Create-and-Certify.

By becoming certified as a Monarch Waystation by Monarch Watch, you can support monarch butterfly conservation and be included in the Monarch Waystation Registry. With this certification your habitat should have sufficient size, sun exposure, milkweed plants, shelter, nectar plants, and proper management. For more information on becoming a Monarch Waystation, visit https://www. monarchwatch.org/waystations.

The last recognition I am going to talk about today is registering your garden with the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. This program is inspired by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter to help propagate monarch butterfly habitats. Your garden should include host plants, nectar plants, and a habitat conducive for a healthy butterfly lifecycle. For more information on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, visit https:// rosalynncarterbutterflytrail.org/join-the-rosalynncarter-butterfly-trail/.

See Extension Publication P2402, Establishing a Backyard Wildlife Habitat for information on how you can adapt your landscape to be a wildlife habitat.

THINKING OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE LOUISIANA SPCA? LET’S TALK!

Hey there! So, you’re interested in volunteering with us at the Louisiana SPCA? That’s awesome! Let’s have a little chat about what it takes and what you can expect.

What is the impact of volunteering with the LASPCA?

Our work at the Louisiana SPCA would not be possible without the dedication and passion of our volunteers. Those who commit an hour or two of their day to spending time with the animals we care for are positively impacting their lives for the better. Volunteers help us introduce our animals to new people, places, and experiences gearing them up for their soon-tobe forever home over the horizon.

Each walk, cuddle session, snack time, and one-on-one playtime helps our furry friends develop a sense of security and comfort, especially for our newer lodgers adjusting to an unfamiliar setting. This extra tender loving care is more monumental for our furry friends who are naturally timid and fearful from their past experiences with humans.

How can I be sure if volunteering is right for me?

There are a variety of opportunities for volunteers with our shelter. If you have a passion for photography, our team is always in need of an extra expert behind the lens to capture the best shots to showcase our animals to potential adopters. Also, if you are a person who loves gardening or landscaping, our team is always actively beautifying our campus, and the spare green thumb of a volunteer never hurt in that process.

Moreover, our organization hosts a variety of events throughout the year, where volunteer support is crucial to their success. For those who enjoy meeting new people and thriving in dynamic environments, volunteering at these events could be the perfect opportunity to fulfill that desire. Whether you’re interested in being an adoption assistant, photographer, greeter, or helping with events, we’ve got plenty of ways for you to get involved.

Well, I’m ready! How do I sign up to volunteer?

The first step to becoming a volunteer with the LASPCA is to visit our website. Once you visit our website, you can read more about our volunteer program, read through the program’s frequently asked questions, and fill out a volunteer application if you decide it is a good fit for your schedule. From there, you will engage in some online orientation courses before being scheduled for in-person training focused on animal safety and handling at our shelter. After training, our volunteer coordinator will work with you to kickstart all the fun, yet enriching opportunities ahead.

To get involved with volunteering at the Louisiana SPCA visit louisianaspca.org/get-involved/volunteer or give us a call at (504)368-5191 to make a difference, one paw at a time.

ADOPT A PET FROM S.T.A.R.T. AND SAVE $10 BY EMAILING S.T.A.R.T. & MENTION THIS AD.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Bella and Luna are two kittens who were rescued and fostered by a START volunteer. They have been adopted together and are now living comfortably in their new home.
