LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM TAMPA It was the perfect storm of football weekends at the end of 2023 for South Louisiana fans. First, the Saints were playing for their playoff lives in Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, New Years Eve. Then, the LSU Tigers were playing for a second consecutive 10-win season and a revenge contest against a middlin’ to average Wisconsin Badger team on the same field on New Years Day. A much better venue than Orlando or even the overhyped Orange Bowl in Miami, the Reliaquest Bowl organization understands its strengths and attractiveness compared to the overdone and incredibly expensive Orlando experiences or those in a bowl that has lost its cache’ to the Fiesta Bowl as one of the Big Four New Years Day spots (the Fiesta, Rose, Sugar and Cotton are more fun and less expensive than the Orange). The important games have been less of a factor there as well.

The Reliaquest team did everything right in providing hospitality to media and fans alike, even though the game only attracted about 40% of its fan capacity. If you’ve never been to Tampa, you are missing not only the best food and drink venue in professional football but also college, along with the best field grass in the league.

But even more appealing than these factors and the Pirate ship in the northwest sector of the North End Zone Pavilion is the settings for fans to enjoy the game from unusual vantage points in Raymond James. For those in the North End Zone, a facade of pirate-era buildings house shops and concession stands on the back end of a large pavilion where fans can walk and casually view the game without the restrictions of seating, shop and eat at will. On the South End Zone side, a more traditional concourse similar to a beach resort or fairgrounds layout with shading and seating, tables and a large concourse area offer similar amenities to those fans. Compare this to the South end zone gallery in Atlanta, where some lucky fans get to lean against a railing to watch the games or Arlington, where an otherwise great football experience is tainted by fans stuck in standing room only areas in the East End Zone, creating a blinding view for both fans and teams facing West during the latter part of day games, a tribute to Jerry Jones wanting people on two parallel interstates to view the length of his billion-dollar palace as they drive by the home of the Cowboys. The food and hospitality in Arlington are top-notch, as good or possibly even better than Tampa, but the Glazer ego (founding owners of the Tampa Bay Bucs) does not enter into the equation. To Jones, size does matter.

My wife, Hilda, has never been a big football fan. She hates nosebleed seating, is not a big tailgating person and usually thinks her appearance at an LSU game means it will rain (Chance of rain with Hilda……ALWAYS!!) in the words of Tiger Stadium announcer Dan Borne’. Even after securing lower bowl season tickets for more than 30 years, it was not enough to have my sweetie accompany me to more than a handful of games in Baton Rouge.

Since I had press box privileges in Tiger Stadium, I was invited to apply for credentials for the bowl game. I was granted credentials and parking and given the connection to the media hotel in Tampa. With the temptations of a first trip to Tampa with its vibrant Latin quarter so close to the hotel and stadium on such a rare trifecta of holiday, football and no deadline, I was thrilled.

Then I thought: would my wife go with me if there was another credential available for her to attend, seated in the press box…..out of the weather…..clean restrooms…..the best stadium food and service staff…..plenty of room to roam……televisions to watch….and no need to be vocal (it’s not allowed in the press box)!

Simple answer. She said yes, the bowl committee said yes and we drove down from the North Shore through Tallahassee and down various highways along Florida’s less-stressed and less traveled west coast until we arrived just a mile from our exit in West Tampa.

The hotel experience with its nonstop Hospitality suite, bowl-provided shuttle to and from the stadium and friendly staff made for a wonderful four-day excursion. LSU won, in the last few minutes, the team jettisoned the majority of its under qualified defensive coaching staff the next day, got major commitments from one coach and two top-ranked players for the future and found their starting quarterback for this year in 2024. Hilda? Well, she won’t go toe-to-toe with Bobby Hebert over football strategy and philosophy but she had an experience she will share positively for the rest of her life. My next project is to get us creds for the season opener for LSU against Southern Cal in Las Vegas. What woman wouldn’t want that experience? And seeing USC in person for only my second time in a major college game against LSU this time would be an item to cross off my football bucket list. The first time I saw USC in a meaningful college game? New Years Day, 1963, when the undefeated Trojans beat their BigTen opponent,42 to 37, to win USC’s first national championship. Their opponent? Wisconsin. I was at the Granddaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl, courtesy of a scarce ticket given to me

by Mike Gale - my sister’s boyfriend and a defensive end for USC. I won’t be worried about the food in Vegas. I’m sure it will be better than most but dining in Texas Stadium and Raymond James Stadium will be almost impossible to beat. Hope your 2024 started as memorable as mine. Happy New Year!

Those who live in the southern areas of the gulf south are blessed with many things like being able to purchase fresh locally harvested seafood and to enjoy an almost semitropical-like climate for most of the year. Another thing a warmer climate allows for is to grow semitropical plants like citrus in the backyard. Citrus plants evolved in an area that never received cold weather, so they don’t have any internal protections to help mitigate the damage from frozen cells and tissues.

Citrus growing is categorized into three regions, all based on average low temperatures. Zone I is the warmest citrus growing zone in the state and encompasses the southernmost parishes in Southeast Louisiana. This is where all the commercial citrus production, both fruits and retail plant material, happens within the state. Zone II includes all of South Louisiana from Lake Charles and Lafayette to Baton Rouge and Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area. This area receives freezing temperatures every winter so citrus plants here will need help when temperatures drop below 32F. Zone III includes everything north of Opelousas. This region is the most restrictive because it receives significantly more cold weather. No matter where you are it is possible to grow citrus, but keep in mind how cold it gets in the wintertime. For areas that receive more freezing weather than others look to grow citrus in containers because they can be moved around much easier if needed.

When considering what size of a container you need think about what a mature size citrus plant looks like. On average, citrus trees will eventually get 10-15 ft tall and 10-15 ft wide. Think of the root system needed to supply a canopy of that size with water and nutrients. In the end, a 45-gallon nursery pot will work well but don’t go too big with a small starter plant. I recommend replanting a 3-gallon citrus tree into a 15-gallon (15-16 in diameter) container and allow the root system to fill out before moving into the final sized pot. Use potting soil as the media. This can be from bagged products, or you can create your own. The soil recipe that Mel Bartholomew uses in his Square Foot Gardening book is good and easy to remember. The three ingredients are equal amounts of peat moss, vermiculite, and compost. The compost can be homemade, or store bought.

Think about the location of the container because citrus plants need full sun to be productive. Six to eight hours of direct sunlight is ideal. Shadier spots prevent adequate photosynthesis (energy production) and will reduce plant vigor and overall yields.

Supplemental irrigation is a must for new citrus tree plantings so look for a sunny spot near a water faucet. Keep in mind that the further away the spigot is from the growing error, the harder it will be to provide supplemental irrigation. Watering wands with water breakers attached to the end can make watering fun and accessible. They make watering easier by including padded grips, various colors, and a nice on/off valve that can be controlled by your thumb.

After the first year the plant will need a fertilizer program for proper growth and development. A complete fertilizer, one with a value for all three numbers, is the common recommendation. You will also find citrus specific fertilizer products as well. Whichever route you decide to take, follow the label instructions to apply a general rate of fertilizer in late February to coincide with warming temperatures in early spring. Apply 360° around the plant, above the immediate rootzone and water in thoroughly.

Lastly, it is imperative to think about moving or protecting citrus plants when temperatures drop below 32°F for more than 5-6 hours. Kumquats, satsumas, and navel oranges are the most cold hardy citrus types but they even need help in freezing weather, especially when young. Move inside a protected structure or look to trap warm air on the day before cold weather hits. Frost cloth, bed sheets, plastic all work well. Aim to cover the plant entirely from top to bottom and secure it well. Do this in the afternoon of the day prior so that the sun can warm the air inside the cover and keep it above freezing.

Happy New Year Everyone, Hope the beginning of the New Year was a good one for you. I enjoyed being at the house watching the neighbors and my grandson shoot fireworks before he went up to his Mom’s house to shoot fireworks for her and his sister. I had cooking to do, so decided feeding them New Year’s Day was top priority.

This year we are having a very early Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day and Easter. I really haven’t given much thought to a Mardi Gras project as every store I have gone into has Mardi Gras items busting out the seams! So I guess it kinda turned me off somewhat. So I decided on doing a Valentine project to show you this time. The painting club I am in did something similar as a challenge last year. Unfortunately I did the line drawing, etc. but never did get around to actually painting the piece. So, I thought I would get a jump start on Valentine’s Day this year.

Who doesn’t like ladybugs? Some people believe they bring good luck. Well, these two are riding around in their little volkswagen having the best time spreading love and happiness. I painted this on a 6 x 6 piece of wood I picked up at Hobby Lobby. It isn’t the best quality wood but it was fine for this quick project. The road they are riding on does have its ups and downs, but there are no potholes! Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will you be making in the new year? Oh, I almost forgot, do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? That would be a Negative for me, I never fulfill them so I decided to bypass that this year and just see what happens. Well I am going to find something to do that is fun for next time! See you then!

COLD WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR BACKYARD BIRDS As cold, winter weather approaches we begin planning for those days when the temperatures drop to at or below freezing. We ponder what may be the best plan for our plants: when to cover them, when to move them inside, which ones may be cold-hardy enough to leave outside? But, along with plants, birds are dealing with the cold winter season, being in greatest need of food and water at this time.

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, it’s likely you’ve already created a backyard habitat. Just like people, wildlife have three basic needs. These needs, commonly re-ferred to as food, water, and cover, promote use and provide the lifecycle needs of wildlife. A successful backyard habitat must in-clude all three needs. It takes only a small invest-ment of time to make your yard or garden wild-life friendly by adding these essentials. While many of our smaller “wildlife friends” are nesting this time of year our birds are still fluttering about, enjoying another day. Here are some tips to assist your backyard birds during the cold weather.

Placing bird feeders outside supplies a source of food for the birds while giving you a beautiful view.

By using both perch-style and flat feeders, you can maximize food access to the greatest assortment of birds. Most backyard bird species prefer black oil sunflower seeds. Used feeders must be cleaned regularly, which can be done with a mixture of one part chlorine bleach to nine parts hot water. Once the feeder has air dried, it can be replenished with fresh seed. Be sure not to place a bird feeder too close to a window as birds may mistakenly strike it. An additional food option perfect for this time are suet cakes, which can be purchased premade in stores. For water, it is best to provide multiple sources such as from bird baths and container-ized ponds. The reality of the NIL slipped into the mainstream of college football this postseason as hundreds of players decided to seek greener pastures for next year where the green takes form in higher denomination currency and the non-monetary offers continue to overrun common sense. Some players are on their third school, like D.J. Ugagelelei, who now will toil for the Florida State Seminoles after stints at Oregon State and Clemson.

The NIL exaserbated the transfer portal by putting incoming pressures on schools to offer four and five-star high school players five, six and even seven figure deals that put many of them making more money than their team’s offensive and defensive coordinators. In turn, these mostly spoiled athletes have leveraged their first year signings into a more lucrative NIL PILL (Name, Image, Likeness Paying Incredible Levels of Largess) by going elsewhere.

The reality of spread offenses and protected quarterbacks has made the job of defending these schemes and players a nearly impossible job. Talented quarterbacks and wideouts will always outnumber talented corners, safeties and hybrid spies, Jacks or whatever the defensive position flavor is at the moment. Rare is the secondary that can shut down a potent pass offense and is hardly ever found outside of Alabama, LSU or Ohio State. Even these schools can face problems such as the ones LSU encountered this season where attitude, injury and inability to scheme correctly cost them at least two games when combined with the incredibly under qualified defensive coaching staff hired by Brian Kelly two years ago. Led by Matt “Ain’t No Brick” House, who wove between the NFL and the NCAA like changing lanes on an eight-lane freeway before coming to LSU, House took a rare defensive talent like Harold Perkins and basically neutered his effectiveness that made Perkins this preseason’s odds-on favorite to become college football’s defensive player of the year. In reality, Perkins had to rely on his instincts to garner virtually all of his positive stats as House positioned Perkins in multiple schemes that eliminated Perkins from playing any type of meaningful football.

Now that LSU is Housebroken, so to speak, it’s time for LSU’s defense to start dishing out crap again instead of taking it The LSU potty needs to flush out the Omar Speights, Duce Chestnuts, Ovie Oghoufos and Denver Harrises on their roster since they either cannot perform to LSU standards or apparently don’t care to learn how to apply their talents to do so. This season, the LSU transfer portal was more a transfer port-o-let. Without fumigation, this LSU team could stink up the place in ’24 without the legs of Jayden Daniels or the talents of Brian Thomas and Malik Nabers.

Monday’s college showdown should have been the best in many a year with the contrasting styles of Michigan and Washington. I have no horse in this race; being a 49er fan I would like Jim Harbaugh to get one national title that he couldn’t get in the NFL. But the team spirit and composition of the Huskies is compelling as well. Like a good friend of mine, I may just watch this game for the pure enjoyment of it all. The game will be history as this publication becomes available just before the game on the 8th. Good luck to both teams.

As for the NFL: I rank the NFC thusly: San Francisco, Detroit, Dallas, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay and Green Bay. In the AFC: Baltimore, Buffalo, Kansas City, Cleveland, Miami, Jacksonville and Texas. NIner/Raven Super Bowl rematch. Won’t predict any further at this time.

JANUARY: The New Year gets started off very well as “The Reliaquest Bowl” kicked off in Tampa Bay a day after the Saints win in the same stadium and the Bayou Bengals play some inspired football to beat Wisconsin despite a soon to be fired Defensive Coordinator. In the National Championship, Washington takes it to Harbaugh and his Michigan Cheaterines and it is overshadowed as a special analyst retires on television and Lil Nicky moves full time onto television! ... In the NFL, the Saints blow out the Falcons and score a team touchdown with time expiring.

Head Coach Dennis Allen looks like an even bigger idiot as he apologizes to Hotlanta and the player’s revolt. Shortly after, Owner Gayle Benson, denies the fans the chance to get rid of Allen and Jameis Winston starts a gofund me for fans to buy the Saints and gets Billions in donations to take over the team. The citizens now own the Saints and Jameis is named city spokesman and fires Allen. GROWING GREENS FOR FRESH PRODUCE IN THE WINTER

I love cool-season gardening. It’s a fantastic way to keep enjoying fresh and healthy produce even as the temperatures begin to drop, and days get shorter.

The cooler months are perfect for growing several crops such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, kale, lettuce and spinach.

I think lettuce is one of the easiest crops to grow in the fall, winter and spring. It only takes about 20 to 60 days to grow many varieties of lettuce, and they can tolerate frost and light freezing temperatures.

Growing lettuce in raised beds or containers is easier than growing it in-ground, which is more traditional. In containers, there is less weed competition and it is easier to harvest.

If you are looking for colorful lettuce to grow, Cherokee lettuce is a great selection. It has thick, medium-sized, reddish-maroon leaves. And unlike many lettuce varieties, it can tolerate warmer temperatures and not develop a bitter taste.

Ideal cos romaine lettuce is another great lettuce to grow. This selection is heat tolerant like Cherokee lettuce, but it also can tolerate frost and light freezing temperatures. Its green, upright foliage makes it a great choice for small gardens or raised beds. Its growth habit makes it a great choice for growing hydroponically.

Mustard and collard greens are two other classic cool-season vegetables for our fall gardens. Both leafy greens also grow well in raised beds and containers where they are more manageable and require less work.

It is surprising how many plants perform well in a small, raised bed or container. This allows you to enjoy fresh greens even if you only have a small patio, balcony, or sunny kitchen window.

If you like spicy greens, Red Giant mustard greens are for you. The flavor of the big mature leaves is similar to horseradish, while younger leaves usually have a milder flavor.

Red Giant is a colorful, purple-tinted mustard plant with large leaves and a bright green stem. Its purple color intensifies in cool temperatures. This plant matures in 35 to 40 days.

While mustard greens are good, I prefer collard greens for their sweeter flavor.

If you are interested in growing your own, try Top Chop, an excellent collard green with large, wide, smooth leaves. It is known for being very cold hardy. This collard plant usually takes about 74 days to mature. You can grow Top Chop in the fall, winter, and spring.

I’ve just named a few varieties, and there are many other great cool-season vegetables you can grow.

LAWN BURWEED Lawn burweed (Soliva pterosperma) is more commonly known as sticker weed due to the cluster of tiny seeds with spines that stick into tender flesh of bare feet, knees, and hands, that may come in con-tact with them at seed maturity.

Lawn burweed is best described as a low-growing, freely branched winter annual having leaves that are twice divided into narrow segments or lobes similar to the appearance of tiny carrot leaves. The real identifier is the small rosette button fruit clusters that form down in the leaf axils once the plant reaches a re-productive stage. At maturity, usually late spring and into summer is when we endure their pain from the dried sharp spines.

If you did not apply a pre-emergent herbicide earlier this fall to control winter annual weeds, and you had lawn burweed in your lawn last summer, then you most likely have them again now and will have to endure their painful spines for another summer each time you walk barefoot on your lawn unless you take action soon to control them. Once the fruiting clus-ters have formed and produced the tiny seeds and spines killing the plants will eliminate the weeds, but the tiny spines and seed will remain to inflict pain for another summer.

Post-emergent options will be dictated by the primary turf species found within your home lawn. Products containing atrazine provide excellent control in centipede and St. Augustine lawns, while mix prod-ucts containing 2,4-D, Dicamba, and MCPP/Mecoprop will provide good control. For most south-ern lawns, excluding bahiagrass, metsulfuron methyl can be a viable solution. For many families, 2024 has started with new pets that have been added to their home during the holiday season. This can be an exciting time for the entire household, but also a great time to make sure your new pet is acclimating to its new environment and being socialized properly. Here are some tips on socializing your new pet this year!

Socializing your pet can be helpful in creating a bond and establishing trust between your family and them. When dogs are not properly socialized, they can learn to be territorial of their space (your home), protective of their resources (food and toys), and become aggressive when they are touched. This can make having guests over or visits to the vet more difficult for both owner and pet. It is easier to socialize your pet when they are a puppy or a kitten, so that they grow up well socialized. For those that adopt or rescue older pets, this can be more challenging but never hopeless.

Puppies and kittens will want to socialize in different ways, depending on breed and personality. For most puppies, they want to meet everyone so make sure that they do! Safely bring them to local spots so that they can be introduced to many different people. Allow them to be held, pet, and handled by those people as well so that they aren’t afraid of them. The more they interact with the public, the more they become comfortable around them. This also applies to other animals, like cats and dogs. Also make sure the other cat or dog is interested and safe to introduce your puppy or kitten to before you do it though.

Kittens may want some time alone to explore your house first before they want to socialize with you and your family. Be gentle with them and patient, as they will most likely spend most of their time indoors and prefer their quiet time.

If you’ve rescued an adult dog or cat, it is still important to socialize them but to do so with their limitations and boundaries in mind. Pets that come from a shelter or rescue will need time to decompress once they go home with you, which could last a couple weeks. Once you’ve allowed them to settle in, start to slowly introduce them to visitors and the public. Always be aware of their behavior and be patient with them as they learn their new world. They will need time socializing with you as well to learn that they can trust you and build a relationship with you. Once that relationship is built though, it will be one to last a lifetime.

It is important to incorporate your new pet into your life so that you may all grow together. A relationship between owner and pet is something very special that can change and mend as you both continue to learn each other. Socializing your pet can provide many benefits for your pet and allow you to have a peaceful home where everyone is comfortable.

Meet Sweet Pea, a kitten who showed up in someone’s hack yard.

She is not microchipped and no one is looking for her. The people who are caring for her chose her name because she is so sweet. She apparently was someone’s little pet until they no longer wanted her. START can get this kitten ready for adoption and find her a great home. We can do this because we have wonderful volunteers and donors whose contributions make this possible.
