MOUNTAIN STRONG

Discover Asheville’s remarkable resilience for yourself this spring

Known for its mix of natural wonders and artful treasures in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville, North Carolina, is eager to welcome guests back this spring after weathering Hurricane Helene.

“Asheville’s revival since the devastating impacts of Helene in late September last year is a powerful testament to the resilience and creativity of our community,” said Vic Isley, president and CEO of Explore Asheville and the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. “This year, guests have the inspiring opportunity to not only experience the soul of this extraordinary place, but to also play a role in its comeback. Whether trying your hand at a new craft led by a master artisan, digging into alluring Appalachian food and music culture, or taking a peaceful hike on a forested trail, Asheville’s people and places offer up connection, renewal and enduring beauty.”

While businesses in downtown Asheville were largely untouched by the storm, other businesses in more high-impact areas have recently re-opened, showcasing that Appalachian resilience Asheville has become known for. Several new businesses continue to open as well, giving repeat visitors something new to experience.

For those looking for a little relaxation and rejuvenation, Asheville is known for its vibrant wellness culture. In 2022, The Ayurvedic Institute actually relocated its headquarters from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Asheville due to the believed healing properties of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The institute now has three Asheville properties that offer Ayurvedic practices based on the ancient science of self-healing: the AyurPrana Listening Room, which hosts vibrational music experiences from the world’s most renowned kirtan musicians within the walls of a former church; the Asheville Yoga Center; and the SoHum Mountain Healing Resort, which will open a luxurious Ayurvedic day spa this spring for the public to enjoy. ayurveda.com

Visitors can also slow down and recharge while soaking in the natural beauty of Western North Carolina at Asheville’s only wood-fired sauna and cold plunge experience, Drip Sauna. Nestled above the French Broad River, the newly opened wellness experience mixes the ancient traditions of sauna and cold plunge therapy with nature. Guests can attend community sessions, special events or book a private session to enjoy its handcrafted barrel saunas — each fueled by locally sourced wood — cold plunges and

outdoor showers, all designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. drip-sauna.com

Although some outdoor attractions in Asheville, including parts of the scenic 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway through the Appalachian Highlands, remain temporarily closed due to fallen trees, many recreational attractions are open to guests — like Asheville’s Black Cultural Heritage Trail. Taking pedestrians through three areas of Asheville (downtown, South Slope and the River Arts District), the informative trail takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to walk and read. Guests will learn how Black people from all backgrounds built resilient communities and fostered social change in Asheville and can soon admire three new large-scale art installations that will help increase the trail’s visibility. bcht.exploreasheville.com

Art collector George Vanderbilt’s beautiful country home, Biltmore, is welcoming guests as well, and will be celebrating a two-year redesign of all of the guest rooms and corridors at The Inn on Biltmore Estate this spring. Springtime marks the perfect time to visit one of the Southeast’s most

popular attractions, as not only will guests be able to celebrate “Spring at Biltmore” with the stunning transformation of the estate’s gardens from March 21 through May 22, but March 21 also marks the premiere of “Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures” at the estate’s exhibition center, Amherst at Deerpark. Running through Jan. 4, 2026, the exhibition invites guests to learn more about the ancient culture of Egypt as they step back in time to the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. biltmore.com

March will also welcome a new art studio and exhibition space to the former Moog Music building in downtown Asheville: Resurrection Studios Collective. Opening on March 7 with an exhibition focused on Hurricane Heleneinspired art, Resurrection Studios Collective plans to house approximately 50 working artists of various mediums. A local artist will also be highlighted in its storefront space, with March and April featuring the works of artist/ filmmaker Kira Bursky. resurrectionavl.com

Adjacent to Resurrection Studios Collective, shoppers will find Atomic Furnishing & Design. An Asheville favorite since 2014, the store is known for sourcing and selling mid-century

furniture that’s been restored to its original beauty. Its new location opened on Broadway Street last December after its old location along Swannanoa River was flooded by Hurricane Helene. Although the new location is smaller, more than 35 vendors are featured in the 7,500-square-foot space, selling everything from vintage records and clothing to plants and art. atomicfurnishings.com

Second Gear, Asheville’s premier outdoor adventure gear retail and consignment shop, is also eager to welcome guests to its new location in West Asheville after its previous location in the River Arts District was destroyed by the flooding from Hurricane Helene. A recreation lover’s dream since 2004, Second Gear offers apparel, footwear and outdoor gear from such high-quality brands as Patagonia and KÜHL at an affordable price, so visitors can explore the great outdoors in Asheville without breaking the bank. secondgearwnc.com

Asheville’s drinking and dining scene continues to thrive as well, with several unique offerings ready to greet guests. At Outsider Brewing, visitors can see how they make the brewery’s broad range of beers

thanks to a custom-made transparent brewing system. Patrons can take in 360-degree views of the entire brewing process while savoring one of 10 rotating beers on tap. outsiderbrewing.beer

For those who prefer wine, Potential New Boyfriend opened in December, serving an expertly curated selection of wine and vermouth that guests can pair with an assortment of housemade desserts and small plates. Guests can savor their selections in a cozy, living room-like setting while listening to vinyl records on a state-of-theart hi-fi system. potentialnewbf.com

For something heartier, Luminosa opened at the historic Flat Iron Hotel last year, serving woodfired Italian cuisine blended with bold Appalachian flavors. The dinner menu features a variety of dishes that celebrate the region, like the tasty Agnolotti pasta made with ham hock, creamer peas, cornbread crumbs and Parmesan. luminosaavl.com

Several events will be held in Asheville this spring, too, including the return of the Asheville Amadeus Festival. Originally formed in 2015 as a celebration of the life and work of Mozart, the festival now brings together some of Asheville’s most talented musicians, artists, creators and entertainers every other year for 11 days of performances, education programs, collaborations and social events. This year’s festival will take place April 30 through May 10, and will feature co-headliners mandolinist/singer Chris Thile and genre-bending ensemble Time for Three. ashevillesymphony.org/asheville-amadeus

PAINTING WITH HISTORY THE TOWN

Go on a tour of Punta Gorda’s many murals

Visitors to Punta Gorda may notice many striking murals decorating the city’s streets — and it’s all because of the vision of one man.

Inspired by the various murals he saw painted on buildings during a trip to Chemainus, British Columbia, local Punta Gorda physician Dr. Robert Andrews wanted to feature historic and educational murals around the city. In 1993, he met with the Punta Gorda Revitalization Committee and the Punta Gorda Business Alliance to talk about creating a mural program, and in 1995, the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society was formed.

Since the city’s first public mural was painted in 1995, more than 30 public murals have been created. The Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society typically selects one new mural project each year, with each mural showcasing a piece of local history. Visitors can currently see murals on display paying tribute to everything from the city’s first city council (artist Charles

Peck’s “First City Council” painted on the Punta Gorda City Hall Annex) to its old movie theater (artist Michael Vires’ “Movie Memories” painted on the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center).

Visitors can learn more about these marvelous creations on the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society’s website, or by going on a self-guided mural tour using the audio guide app Otocast. Not only does the mobile app use geolocation mapping technology to help users find each mural as they walk around town, but it also plays audio descriptions of the history depicted in each work. Mobile and downloadable walking maps are available as well on the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society’s website. Additionally, on select dates throughout the year, the organization hosts a two-day history class — “The History of Punta Gorda through its Murals” — for a nominal fee. Class size is limited, so advance online registration is required. puntagordamurals.org

A REAL FLORIDA ADVENTURE

Immerse yourself in nature with Peace River Charters

Whether you’re hoping to see a bald eagle or an alligator sunbathing on the riverbank, there’s no better way to explore the natural beauty of Peace River than by booking an adventure with Peace River Charters.

Founded in 2012 by captain Zac Varner, the popular Arcadia tour company started out with just a four-seat airboat. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest airboat and outdoor adventure businesses in Southwest Florida, offering a variety of tours that provide visitors of all ages with an authentic glimpse into Florida’s unique ecosystems.

“At Peace River Charters, we pride ourselves on offering a more personal and unforgettable

outdoor adventure experience,” Varner said. “As a family-owned and operated business, we treat every guest like part of our family, ensuring you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. We are well known for our airboat tours, but we offer so much more, and there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We’re not just another outdoor adventure company — we’re about creating memories, sharing the beauty of real Florida and giving you the kind of personal touch you won’t find anywhere else in Southwest Florida.”

Springtime is the ideal time for nature enthusiasts to see an assortment of flora and fauna on one of Peace River Charters’ guided tours. Guests often encounter alligators,

turtles and a variety of birds while gliding across Peace River’s pristine waters on the company’s signature 50-minute airboat tour; spot deer and wild hogs on its 45-minute swamp buggy ride; and admire the beauty of spring wildflowers while weaving through oak hammocks and open fields on its 50-minute horseback ride. Combo tour packages are available as well, or guests can rent a canoe to explore Peace River by themselves.

For those who want to extend their adventure, try enjoying a night under the stars at one of Peace River Charters’ scenic camping spots. A variety of specialty and extended tours can be booked for private parties, too, including half-day fishing charters for those wanting to fish Peace River’s tranquil waters for bass, snook and tarpon.

While guests never know what types of wildlife they might see on an excursion, visitors are guaranteed to see incredible animals like emus and ring-tailed lemurs at the newly renovated Jungle Doria’s Wildlife Park. Admission to the on-site wildlife park is complimentary for anyone taking a Peace River Charters tour. Visitors can also pay to add on one of several unforgettable animal interactions offered at Jungle Doria’s during the weekend, like feeding its capybara, Alvin, or holding a snake.

Peace River Charters is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with most tours available daily. The company is closed on Easter (April 20). peacerivercharters.com

A REASON TO CELEBRATE

Discover

what’s

new

at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium

Just in time for its 30th anniversary in June, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium has welcomed several exciting new additions and exhibit expansions for visitors to enjoy.

The only museum in the United States devoted primarily to shells and mollusks, the Sanibel attraction welcomed hundreds of new animals to its Living Gallery of Aquariums last year after having to rebuild the exhibit due to damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022. Visitors can see more than 60 species of marine life on display, including such beloved returning species as the Lined Seahorse, the Disco Clam and the Giant Pacific Octopus. Several new species have been added to the exhibit as well, including a Two-Spot Octopus and Flamingo Tongue Snails.

Guests can learn more about the aquarium’s marine life during regularly scheduled Keeper Chats held daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. or during the museum’s Touch Pool Talks offered daily at 3 p.m. Additionally, new supporting exhibits featuring large touchable shells, videos and dioramas are on display in the Living Gallery of Aquariums that illuminate the biology and behavior of mollusks.

Earlier this year, the museum’s popular Great Hall of Shells also unveiled its new redesign. The expanded exhibit now features more

than double the number of shell specimens previously on view, with approximately 3,000 specimens on display. Visitors will see Southwest Florida shells, world-record-sized shells, ancient fossils and more while learning about how shells play a role in human history and culture.

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Special lectures, classes and field education opportunities are available throughout the year, too, like the museum’s guided Sunrise Shell and Mollusk Stroll taking place at Lighthouse Beach Park on March 27 at 6:30 a.m. Advance registration is required. shellmuseum.org

A MEAL DINERS WON’T SOON FORGET

Savor exceptional fare in a naturally beautiful setting at Blossom & Brie

What was once seen as an idyllic event space to host weddings and corporate events has since become one of Southwest Florida’s most extraordinary dining treasures.

Located in North Fort Myers, Blossom & Brie (formerly Rosy Tomorrows Heritage Farm) was purchased in September 2023 by Stacey Poole and her husband, Rodney. Home to 350 chickens, 75 cows, 60 pigs, 25 sheep, 10 guinea fowls, four turkeys and three miniature donkeys, the 86-acre working livestock farm originally only prepared holiday meals to go and hosted wine dinners, barbecues and private events under its new ownership. However, in May of 2024, the property began serving lunch, dinner and weekend brunch in its charming pole barn.

Serving seasonal creations using ingredients straight from the farm and other local producers — like the SWFL Cuban sandwich made with the farm’s red wattle pork, and the Beef Bourguignon made from its grass-fed beef — the restaurant at Blossom & Brie is known for its farm-fresh cuisine. The rustic eatery recently purchased a state-of-the-art vertical hydroponic farm built entirely

inside of a 40-foot shipping container as well, which can grow fresh lettuce, microgreens, edible flowers and root vegetables 365 days a year. Diners can enjoy the flavorful fare while taking in the picturesque surroundings and are even encouraged to wander the farm to visit some of its animals before or after their meal — like the farm’s recent rescue, a sweet Holstein steer named Moo who will be celebrating his 14th birthday in March.

“This is not your typical restaurant or venue,” said Stacey Poole. “It is a place you don’t just see — you feel it. When you dine with us, it is truly an experience of the senses. We want you to enjoy the fresh country air, blue skies, the animals and the sweeping landscapes of the farm. You will be welcomed with the warm hospitality of our staff and savor the fresh and delicious food crafted by chef Wesley Robbins and his team.”

Since purchasing Blossom & Brie, the Pooles have made several upgrades to the property, including building an elegant new Celebration Barn for weddings and events up to 150 guests that can also accommodate smaller parties during regular dining hours. Additionally, plans

are being made to open a market that will sell the farm’s fresh produce, eggs and meat. Blossom & Brie will continue to host its popular five-course wine dinners as well on select dates throughout the year.

Blossom & Brie is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for lunch, Thursday through Saturday from 5 until 8:30 p.m. for dinner, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for brunch. Reservations are required for all three dining periods. blossomandbrie.com

A Hidden Gem

There’s always

something happening in Safety Harbor

In between the bustling Floridian cities of Tampa and Clearwater, there’s a bayside city big on charm. Safety Harbor is a quaint community known for its walkable downtown, home to distinctive boutiques, delicious dining and plenty of fun and entertainment for visitors and locals alike.

When visiting the charming city, a good first stop is at the historic Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center on the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue. The chamber is full of information about the city’s history and its present. Souvenirs are for sale, and free city maps are up for grabs, detailing all the downtown businesses and attractions that make the city so special.

Attractions range from familiar favorites to eclectic oddities, and none are so vivaciously odd as Whimzeyland. An outdoor art gallery of vibrant mosaics and repurposed salvage, Whimzeyland is a private residence that utilizes its outdoor space to display a plethora of artistic creations. Fans of the aesthetic can even stay overnight in a whimsey-themed bed and breakfast run by the artistic couple behind the attraction, Todd Ramquist and Kiaralinda, or purchase one of the couple’s wire work sculptures to take home.

Art abounds in Safety Harbor. Live music can be heard any day of the week downtown at any number of venues, including The Safety Harbor Art and Music Center which regularly hosts musicians, drum circles, open mic nights and storytelling shows for the community that visitors are more than welcome to join.

Natural beauty can be found in Folly Farms Nature Preserve, an 8.6-acre park with a hiking loop, community garden, playground and a butterfly garden. Or visit Philippe Park, the oldest park in Pinellas County. The 92-acre park is steeped in history, from its majestic centuries-old oak trees to the Temple mound, a precolonial heritage site built by the Tocobaga. Visitors can bike or stroll harborside paths, rent paddle boards or enjoy a waterfront picnic.

In the popular stretch of Downtown Safety Harbor, the oak-lined brick streets provide no shortage of food, drink and shopping options to pick from, and on Sundays, the Market on Main hosts free outdoor yoga classes and showcases local vendors selling food, art and more.

At one local restaurant, delicious dishes are crafted by a famous Tik Tok chef. Chef and owner, Jon Walker at The Tides Seafood Market has almost 135,000 Tik Tok followers and serves up outstanding cuisine at the family-owned market and eatery, including $1 happy hour oysters daily.

For late night fun, Gigglewaters is a great place to land in the heart of Downtown. It’s a speakeasy-style restaurant from two Brooklyn transplants, with a menu inspired by classic American comfort food including Wagyu beef burgers, bacon-wrapped hot dogs stacked with toppings, and New York City delicacies like Frito

A meal at Gigglewaters can be enjoyed in their ritzy Prohibition-era style dining room, but for $5, diners can order food in their intimate, 32-seat movie theater, where classic movies like “The Goonies,” “The Godfather” and more are screened every weekend.

Safety Harbor also has plenty of places to share a pint, from local brewers Troubled Waters Brewing and Crooked Thumb Brewery, to community favorites like Bar Fly and The Pub at Safety Harbor. The latter hosts music and events and serves woodfired pizza to complement its impressive tap selection. For morning pickme-ups, it’s hard to beat Haven House’s strong coffee and its view overlooking the beautiful 300-year-old Baranoff Oak.

When it comes time to rest, you’ll find options at both ends of Main Street. Choose the newly renovated Safety Harbor Motel or the famous Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, built on the site of the Espiritu Santo Springs, discovered by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. Overlooking Tampa Bay, the renowned resort is centrally located near restaurants and retail shops, ensuring guests won’t miss any of the excitement that regularly passes through town. Safety Harbor frequently hosts festivals, parades and parties, from the market on Sundays to the monthly 3rd Friday Street Celebration. It seems there’s always something fun happening in Safety Harbor, drawing visitors back again and again.

Beach Time! Discover the riches of Treasure Island

The beautiful west coast of Florida was dealt a heavy blow in the fall of 2024 when two hurricanes roared through, damaging many communities in Tampa Bay’s peninsula of St. Petersburg-Clearwater.

Some of the area’s most expansive stretches of sand can be found in the tiny beach town of Treasure Island. This scenic community suffered significant wind and flood damage, but through the resilience and commitment of residents, the properties, attractions, restaurants and beaches are now welcoming visitors back.

With three miles of beautiful sugar-sand beaches, families have flocked to Treasure Island since the 1950s to bask in the golden rays of sunshine set against calming waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Nostalgia seekers like to stay where their grandparents did in charming B&Bs, modernized cottages, and hotels including the much-loved Bilmar Beach Resort, which rebounded earlier this year from extensive storm damage. Their onsite tropical-themed restaurant, Sloppy Joe’s, still reigns as one of the hottest spots on the

beach to eat, drink and hang out.

Getting around Treasure Island is easy. The hassle-free Suncoast Beach Trolley lets you hop on and off at the area’s most notable hotspots, such as beachy-casual Ka’Tiki on Sunset Beach, where you can sink toes in sand, sip a local brew, feast on a mega-sized grouper sandwich and gaze at amazing water views. Live musical entertainment every night complements each majestic sunset.

Most lodging, shops, eateries and nightlife are mid-island, flanked by mesmerizing beach scenes. For good eats, head to the

cozy patio of Middle Grounds Grill for fabulous fresh seafood (try the Honey Ginger Glazed Salmon), or hang out at the front deck of newly rebuilt Ricky T’s, feast on a loaded seafood basket and sip a tropical cocktail as the rhythm of local entertainment envelopes you.

The dress code on Treasure Island is definitely beach casual, but if you yearn for a more upscale tempo, try the trendy Treasure Island Beach Resort for beachfront accommodations and fine dining. For fun times, five minutes north is John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk in Madeira Beach, a water-edged complex of casual shops, fishing charters, restaurants and sightseeing cruises perfect for hours of enjoyment.

Stay long enough to explore the coastline communities from Pass-a-Grille and St. Pete Beach, all the way to Clearwater Beach. Restored beaches and a rebuilt infrastructure are ready and waiting for visitors to embrace the sunshine and sand. The destination’s newest tagline sums it up nicely…“Still Shining.” stpeteclearwater.com

NAMASTE

Practicing yoga in St. Pete/Clearwater is an experience unlike any other thanks to several outdoor classes that take advantage of the area’s picturesque surroundings.

Avid and first-time yogis gather on the shore side of Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa daily at 8 a.m. for Clearwater Beach Yoga’s 60-minute Beach Flow class. Located directly on Clearwater Beach, each session is led by a certified instructor trained to teach yoga on the beach’s soft sugar white sand. As the rhythm of the Gulf of Mexico’s turquoise waters become the soundtrack to each class, students often spot dolphins swimming in the distance. Individual sessions start at $25, with beach blankets available to rent for an additional $5. clearwaterbeachyoga.com

Dolphins are also occasionally spotted during Nava Yoga Studio’s Beach Yoga on charming Pass-a-Grille Beach in St. Pete Beach. Held daily at 8:30 a.m., each hour-long class is open to students of all skill levels. Individual sessions cost $20, and guests are advised to bring their own beach towel or blanket. For those who aren’t early risers, evening and full moon beach classes are also held on select dates during the winter. navayogastudio.com

For those who would rather have a waterfront yoga experience on grass instead of sand, St. Pete Pier hosts Sunset Yoga on the first Wednesday of every month. Led by yoga experts from The Body Electric Yoga & Athletic Companies, each 60-minute class is open to both beginner and expert yogis and takes place underneath the “Bending Arc” art installation in Family Park. Not only does the cooling breeze from Tampa Bay move Janet Echelman’s billowing net sculpture during each session, but after the sun sets, the unique piece glows in the night sky. Classes are complimentary, though donations are encouraged, with proceeds benefiting a different local group each month. stpetepier.org/events

A TRUE WORK OF ART

Experience an art museum unlike any other at The Dalí

Regardless of whether one considers themselves an art aficionado, no trip to St. Pete-Clearwater is complete without visiting The Dalí Museum.

Located in downtown St. Petersburg, The Dalí celebrates the life and work of Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Founded in 1982 with a core collection of works from Dalí’s friends A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, the museum features more than 2,400 pieces representing every period and medium of Dalí’s creative life. Among the museum’s permanent collection, visitors will see original drawings, oil paintings, book illustrations, prints, photos, sculptures, manuscripts, artist’s books and an extensive archive of documents.

Several limited-time exhibitions are on view at The Dalí throughout the year, too, like “The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection.” On display through May 4, the exhibition features more than 100 works by 50 artists in celebration of

the centennial of the founding of Surrealism. Then on May 24 through Oct. 26, the museum will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival by showcasing original indoor murals by an array of contemporary artists for “Outside In: New Murals Inspired by Dalí.”

The Dalí boasts a couple of immersive experiences that further shed light on Dalí’s life and career as well. At “Ask Dalí,” visitors can pick up a telephone inspired by Dalí’s famous “Lobster Phone” and ask any question they would like to a recreated Salvador Dalí developed with AI technology. For an additional fee, guests can also experience the sensation of stepping into the artist’s life at the multisensory art experience “Dalí Alive 360°,” which screens at select times inside the museum’s recently opened Dalí Dome.

The Dalí Museum opens daily at 10 a.m. and closes Friday through Wednesday at 6 p.m. On Thursdays, it stays open until 8 p.m. thedali.org

In 2023, CNN Travel named The Dalí one of seven museums globally that showcase the future

Wild new realm expands Busch Gardens

Tampa Bay’s kid-friendly offerings

One of North America’s largest zoos and Florida’s thrill ride leader, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, will soon have even more family-friendly thrills for kids to enjoy.

Home to more than 200 animal species and nine thrilling roller coasters — including the world’s fastest and steepest hybrid coaster, Iron Gwazi — Busch Gardens Tampa Bay plans to open its all-new Wild Oasis realm later this spring. The reimagined realm will be North America’s most immersive kid-friendly adventure realm, featuring captivating attractions, engaging animal exhibits and other interactive elements.

“Busch Gardens is thrilled to introduce Wild Oasis, an all-new realm designed to immerse our guests in a vibrant environment that blends adventure with relaxation,” said Erick Elliott, vice president of design, engineering and general services at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. “Wild Oasis will bring a refreshing experience to the park by offering an interactive hub where families and younger thrill seekers can recharge, explore and connect with nature in exciting ways.”

Located within Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s Jungala area where the Treetop Trails attraction was until 2018, Wild Oasis promises to entertain, educate and inspire visitors of all ages. Guests will be immersed

in the sights and sounds of the rainforest; feel the rush of a newly themed drop tower featuring state-of-the-art digital and sound effects; and experience up-close encounters with some of the world’s most fascinating animals at an all-new multi species animal habitat. The lush realm will also house interactive water play areas and a multilevel climbing canopy. Visitors can explore Wild Oasis even further by embarking on an informative

Wild Oasis joins another family favorite introduced to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay last July — Phoenix Rising. Featuring a height requirement of only 42 inches, the suspended roller coaster lets riders soar like the mythological phoenix above the park’s 65-acre Serengeti Plain, home to such exotic animals as zebras and reticulated giraffes, before going on an exploratory journey over the park’s Pantopia region. All the while, riders are listening to a one-of-a-kind soundtrack that enhances the exhilarating experience.

Springtime marks the return of one of the park’s most popular events as well: the Busch Gardens Food & Wine Festival. Taking place select dates from March through May, the event invites parkgoers to savor dishes inspired by flavors from around the globe. Guests ages 21 and older can even pair the delectable items with wines, craft brews and cocktails. On select evenings, free concerts are held to further add to the fun atmosphere.

With all this and so much more to experience at the 335-acre park, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay definitely has no shortage of thrills for every member of the family. buschgardens.com/tampa

SCULPTED TO PERFECTION

Have a roaring good time at the 2025 Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival

The No. 1 sand sculpting festival in Florida returns to Clearwater Beach this spring, bigger and better than ever!

Celebrating its 11th year, the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival takes place April 11 through 27, with the fun theme “DinoShores: A Prehistoric Adventure in Sand!” More than 200,000 spectators are expected at the event to watch as 27 master sand sculptors from around the world use 1,000 tons of Clearwater Beach’s famous white sand to create a jaw-dropping, museum-quality art exhibit on Pier 60. While last year’s Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit spanned 21,000 square feet, this year’s exhibit space will increase to 24,000 square feet and feature a new augmented-reality experience that brings the intricate sand sculptures to life through vivid, interactive imagery.

“The Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival is a celebration of two of Mother Nature’s greatest treasures — our world-famous sunsets and pristine sugar sand beaches,” said Lisa M. Chandler, founder of the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival. “It’s more than

families together to celebrate the very best of Clearwater Beach. From iconic sand sculptures to our renowned hospitality, culinary gems and local attractions, the festival offers something for everyone in a picturesque setting.”

Festivalgoers can even try their hand at creating their own sandy masterpiece, as free sand sculpting classes from Tampa Bay Sandsculpting Co. will be offered during the event. Guests can also enjoy live entertainment, purchase handmade wares like jewelry and blown glass from local artisans and savor delicious fare from a variety of food vendors. One-day general admission tickets cost $14 plus tax, with the Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit open Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Children ages 3 and younger receive

INTIMATE YET IMPACTFUL

Tampa

Theatre’s

new microcinema is quickly making a difference

Last year, the historic Tampa Theatre celebrated its first expansion in its 98-year history.

Named after the former theatre board member whose private donation gave Tampa Theatre the momentum it needed to secure additional funding to build out the new space, the $2.9 million John T. Taylor Screen Room opened its doors on June 1, 2024, following 11 months of construction. Offering a superior movie-watching experience in a uniquely intimate setting, the 43-seat microcinema features both 4K Christie digital projection and 7.1 Dolby surround sound. Located adjacent to Tampa Theatre’s Franklin Street Box Office, the microcinema has already screened a variety of first-run and classic films, including “Kinds of Kindness” and a 4K restoration of “Seven Samurai.”

“In just the few short months that it has been open, the John T. Taylor Screening Room has completely changed our film programming model for the better,” said Jill Witecki, Tampa Theatre’s vice president and director of marketing. “We’ve gone from 700-plus show times each year in a single space to more than 1,000 across both rooms, which equals that many more people we can introduce to the historically magnificent Tampa Theatre experience.”

In addition to now having two venues for movie screenings, Tampa Theatre continues to host a wide range of live events in its historic 1,238-seat auditorium. Two of the theatre’s biggest annual events will take place in March: its Hollywood Awards Night on March 2 and its signature fundraiser,

WineFest, on March 7 and 8. This year’s theme for WineFest will be Harry Potter and the Goblet of Wine. Several stand-up comedy tours will also be stopping by Tampa Theatre this spring, including Tiffany Haddish’s “The

EQUINE ADVENTURE

If you’re looking for an exhilarating, thrilling and truly memorable experience on your next trip to Florida’s Bradenton Beach area, look no further than C Ponies Beach Horseback Excursions. This adventure consistently garners rave reviews, in part because of the ride’s uniqueness and because of the extraordinary horses, owner and staff.

Carmen Hermann Hanson heads the operation, and this personable entrepreneur comes from a long line of equine lovers. Her grandfather, Col. Ottomar Hermann, made his mark in history by rescuing the famed White Lipizzaner stallions during WWII and bringing them to America.

Carmen grew up loving horses and turned her passion into a meaningful career… by accident. One day, while swimming with her horse in the shallow Gulf waters, she noticed a captivated group of spectators.

On your next trip to Florida’s west coast, take time to saddle up!

This sparked the realization that many people would delight in the experience. Thus, C Ponies was born and has since thrilled thousands.

Choose from three 90-minute experiences: a daytime ride on Bradenton Beach, a sunset platinum excursion or a trail ride through the forested Alafia River State Park.

Her stable is home to 30 rare and beautiful Drum and Gypsy Vanner horses, each rescued from neglect and abuse. Each horse undergoes two to four months of nurturing and training, including time spent at area beaches to become acclimated with the water and train with riders. Since the breeds are known for their quiet and disciplined nature, they are well suited for the job.

Choose from three 90-minute experiences: a daytime ride on Bradenton Beach, a sunset platinum excursion or a trail ride through the forested Alafia River State Park. Riders must attend a brief safety meeting, adhere to age and weight restrictions and wear appropriate attire suitable for the water. Water temperatures must remain above 60°F.

For those seeking a very romantic date, their sunset ride is unforgettable. Of course, you’ll want to capture the moment, but staff discourages bringing cameras on this ride into the water. The better option is to purchase the staffproduced optional photo package.

RUM, SALT AND SEA

Tasting the first legal rum in Key West

In an old bottling plant over 160 miles from a fresh water source, Paul Menta of Key West Legal Rum isn’t fazed when it comes to curing his rum barrels. While the process usually involves filling the barrels with boiling hot purified water in order to prevent leaks and keep the wood from absorbing the alcohol, Menta heads down the street, wades into the blue waters and cures the barrels with salt water.

“I often work in the evenings, because if there’s a wind blowing, I’m kiteboarding, wing-foiling or we’re out fishing,” he admits with a smile.

It was over a decade ago when Paul and his wife Crystal built on the famous rumsmuggling history of the Keys and applied for the first license for a business in Key West to produce alcohol legally and locally, and he feels that the risk is finally paying off. “More flights are coming, and the lifestyle is really starting to be understood. People down here say hello when you walk by, and you just want to be on vacation when you’re in Key West.”

Like the Florida Keys, Menta is fiercely independent. He is often at the forefront of local charitable efforts, whether it’s hurricane relief or the fight against the invasive lionfish, but happily turned down offers to run for office. “You’ve got to be out of your mind to be in politics,” he laughs, noting that in 1982, Key West briefly seceded from the Union in good

So, he began to invite local restaurants to offer tapas-like pairings. Recently, he even took on Gordon Ramsay in a cooking challenge.

Originally a fine-dining chef before he dived into distilling, Menta kept it secret that instead of using the expected bottle of rum as the local ingredient, he picked a 100 year “old sour” recipe only found in Key West homes. A mixture of key limes, sea salt and bird pepper (a wild chili no hotter than white pepper), the recipe helped him win the competition.

“Gordon was blown away by the food culture here, and he wanted to see everything. We only went around by boat and on the ocean,” he remembers.

As well as visiting his small-batch distillery, Menta had a suggestion for visitors in Key West: “Get a bicycle, go get a café con leche — don’t get up too early though, relax — and go to the cemetery. There you’ll see the island sense of humor on some of the gravestone inscriptions, but also the history. But the great thing, especially in the spring earlier in the day, is that all the iguanas come out and sun themselves! People always want to see them. I say that it’s the Key West Zoo!”

TRAVELER INFORMATION

SAFETY FIRST

Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following:

• Location of the nearest emergency exit

• Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed

• Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency

SEAT BELTS

Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.

CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS

Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.

SMOKING

Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.

LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT

Two passengers find their happily ever after aboard an Allegiant flight

Allegiant is known for its nonstop flights that help keep families and friends connected even when they are far apart, but sometimes the airline connects people in unexpected ways, too.

While flying from Florida to Wisconsin for her sister’s wedding in 2018, Taylor Sporer made a love connection of her own when the person seated next to her, Mike Bergelin, struck up a conversation.

“Normally, I’m the type of traveler who keeps to myself watching Netflix, but something about Mike’s friendly demeanor made me want to chat,” Sporer recalled. “I always joke that he could talk for hours with literally anyone, but luckily for me, that day it was me!”

Although the two eventually went their separate ways once they left baggage claim, Bergelin briefly reconnected with Sporer on Instagram. She tried setting him up with one of her friends, but it wasn’t until five years later, when a now single Sporer reached out to Bergelin again over social media, that she found out he was interested in her.

“My previous relationship took a toll on me and made me rethink what I really wanted in a partner. For some reason, Mike came to my mind after all these years,” Sporer stated. “Something about our conversation just stuck with me, along with our shared

interests and views on life just from those short interactions. So, I reached out to him, and it turned out he was also recently out of a relationship. The timing this time around was just perfect!”

Now, Sporer and Bergelin are preparing for a June “brunch wedding” after a year and a half of dating.

“Our story proves that fate has a funny way of bringing people together when you least expect it,” Sporer said. “So, talk to that stranger on the airplane — it’s worth it!”

Last April, Sporer and Bergelin flew to Denver on an Allegiant flight in almost the exact same seats they met on
Since their love story started out on an Allegiant flight headed to Appleton International Airport (ATW), Sporer reached out to ATW to schedule their engagement photo shoot there

Spontaneous Acts of Inflight Kindness

Making your journey as seamless as possible is at the core of what our inflight crew members do every single day. Allegiant flight attendants go above and beyond to ensure every passenger has a comfortable travel experience. Sometimes it’s calming nervous flyers, soothing a baby, or providing extra care to families traveling to deal with a hardship.

Flight attendant Rabena Spade remembers one occasion when she met a mother traveling with three little girls. While in the air, the girls were doing their homework and shared that their father is a pilot for another airline.

“Oh my gosh, you guys have great snacks,” said one of the girls to Spade as they bonded throughout the flight. After landing, the kids handed her a colorful drawing, thanking the crew for an unforgettable flight:

“Dear cabin crew and pilots of flight 1994, we enjoyed our first Allegiant flight. This was the

most enjoyable flight we have had for a long time. You made the skies friendly and made us feel like princesses! You’re the friendliest crew we’ve met!!! Thank you for all of the treats and sugar to keep us motivated to do school.”

“When I said goodbye to the girls, their mom embraced me, saying, ‘You have no idea what impact you had on my life. You set us up with so much positivity to overcome this challenge we’re heading into,’” recalled Spade.

The family wasn’t flying for vacation; they were on their way to visit a family member who had fallen ill.

Spade says this experience reminded her of the importance of treating everyone with kindness, because you never know what challenges they may be up against.

“To make that connection in that little amount of time is a memory those little girls will always remember on Allegiant,” added Spade.

Duo Living the Nonstop Family Life

At Allegiant, connecting people to the places and moments that matter most is at the heart of what we do. For our customers, this means affordable, nonstop travel to unforgettable destinations. For our Team Members, it often means so much more.

Meet Captain Leo Bell and First Officer Valerie Bell — a father-daughter pilot duo whose story embodies Allegiant’s mission to bring people closer together.

Meet

Allegiant’s FatherDaughter Pilot

Leo joined Allegiant in 2011, transitioning from another airline in pursuit of a more balanced and family-oriented lifestyle. Unlike most airline schedules that keep crews away from home for extended periods, Allegiant’s innovative business model allows the majority of our Team Members to return home each night. For Captain Leo, this meant being present for nightly family dinners and creating cherished memories with his loved ones.

Leo’s decision to prioritize family left a lasting impression on his daughter, Valerie. Watching her dad blend his love for aviation with a familycentered life ignited a passion for flying in her. As a child, she dreamed of one day joining Allegiant’s pilot ranks — and flying alongside her father.

That dream became a reality when Valerie was accepted into Allegiant’s training program. Under her father’s mentorship (including serving as one of her flight instructors), Valerie honed her skills and joined her dad in the skies as an Allegiant pilot in 2024.

“It’s an incredible experience to share the flight deck with my dad,” Valerie says. “Flying together feels like a full-circle moment for both of us, and we’re grateful Allegiant made it possible.”

As Leo nears retirement, watching Valerie soar — both figuratively and literally — has become one of his proudest accomplishments. From her first solo flight to now co-piloting with him, their journey is a testament to the deep connections Allegiant fosters.

Thank you, Captain Leo and First Officer Valerie, for exemplifying what it means to live the Allegiant mission. Together We Fly!
