Abstract Stem cells have special properties including high proliferative properties to produce more stem cells and unspecialized function but they have the capacity to differentiate into specialized cells that can carry out these functions. Adult stem cells are routinely used in medical therapies but collecting of stem cells is invasive and painful procedure. Recently, human dental pulp cells represent an advantageous source of stem cells with wholly non-invasive procedure of collecting. Thus, research studies to promote the stem cell properties of dental pulp cells using for regenerative therapies are still needed. Folic acid is essential for craniofacial development. Recently, folic acid can promote a proliferation of embryonic neural stem cells. However, effect of folic acid on human dental pulp cells has never been reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate an in vitro effect of folic acid on human dental pulp cells. Human dental pulp cells were treated with 1, 0.1, and 0.01 mM folic acid for 24 hours and MTT assay was used to measure the cell viability. It was found that folic acid significantly promoted the cell viability of human dental pulp cells resulting in increased cell number. Our results suggested that folic acid promotes cell proliferation and provide for further studies to investigate underlying mechanisms of folic acid on human dental pulp cells.
