DIRECTOR’S NOTE

At first glance Junie B. Jones is a show that’s bursting with energy and color! But going through the process of putting all the pieces together, I’ve seen that each of the actors on stage have given their character deep and meaningful qualities. Junie B. Jones is all about making new friends, working hard to succeed, turning a sour situation into something sweet, and writing down the story of your life. Junie B. teaches all of us to remember where we’ve been and love the little moments in life, like getting a super awesome new lunch box or making a brand new bus friend. This being the first show I’ve had the opportunity to direct, I am extremely grateful to this wonderful cast for being so patient and so hard working.

They made what could have been a difficult adventure, an upbeat and professional experience. Being on the other side of the table during the process of putting together a musical has been so eye opening. It is so unbelievable how much dedication and hard work MYT puts into each and every one of their productions. I also couldn’t have done any of this without Moonlight Youth Theatre and the Vista Education Foundation for trusting me with this show. I also am so grateful and thankful for Mike and Caelen for keeping me sane through each and every rehearsal and Lyndon for always making us laugh and helping our cast’s music sound beautiful. A huge thank you to Abby our wonderful choreographer who’s created movement that’s lifted the energy of the whole show. From auditions to shows, Junie B. Jones has been full of laughter, hard work, and joy. We hope you find the laughter and humor that is woven into this meaningful story being told on stage through the eyes of a first grader. LYNDON PUGEDA (Musical Director) is excited to be back with Moonlight Youth Theatre after working on their production of Beauty and the Beast last fall! His work around Southern California, on both the professional and educational level, has received much recognition, including a Craig Noel Award nomination and two National Youth Arts awards for Outstanding Musical Direction. Credits include: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Tarzan (Moonlight Youth Theatre); Mamma Mia!, Aida, Sister Act, All Shook Up, Spamalot (Moonlight Stage Productions); The Lorax, Picasso at the Lapin Agile (The Old Globe); Gutenberg! The Musical! (Backyard Renaissance); Tell Me On A Sunday (Vista’s Broadway Theater); Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings (New Village Arts); American Idiot (Riverside City College); Bring It On, The Wedding Singer (RBV Drama). He earned his B.A. degree in Music: Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts from UC San Diego.

ABBY DESPAIN (Choreography) is delighted to be returning to theatre with the incredible cast and crew of Junie B Jones! She has spent the last four years studying ballet, but before that she was very involved in theatre and could be seen on various local stages. Previous roles include everything from Wilbur in Moonlight Youth Theatre’s production of Charlotte’s Web in 2010 to Jane Banks in Moonlight Stage Production’s Mary Poppins in 2014.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) CHARLOTTE ANDERSON (Ensemble) is excited to perform for the first time with MYT. She’s performed with other theater groups in Annie, Seussical, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella and A Charlie Brown Christmas. She truly has a love for performing. When Charlotte isn’t rehearsing her latest role, she keeps busy with private singing and piano lessons, writing stories and music, soccer, scrabble club, her best friends and her family.

MALAKAI BASILE (Herbert) is a 4th grade student in Oceanside, CA. Malakai’s past stage credits include Beauty and the Beast (Chip), Elf (Michael Hobbs), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Charlie), The Jungle Book (Mowgli), and Mary Poppins (Michael Banks). You can see him later this spring as Edgar in Ragtime with Lighthouse Players. Malakai hopes all of you enjoy this show as much as he enjoys performing with this incredible cast and company!

RUBY BELT (Bobbi Jean Piper) is very excited to be performing at MYT for the first time.

This fall, she was the prop-intern for MYT’s Beauty and the Beast. Ruby is also thrilled to be performing in the Riptide Vocal Ensemble (Dir. Justine Hansen.) She enjoys playing guitar, ukulele, and piano, swimming, and playing with her dog, Otter. She would like to thank JD Dumas for being an amazing vocal coach, and her parents for supporting her. Philippians 4:13 ANNABELLE CHAMBERS (May) is a freshman at Sage Creek High school and has been doing theatre since she was 8 years old. She has recently started her own theatre troupe called the Paracosmic Theatre Troupe. Annabelle is an intern at the Rios Music Project and plays many instruments such as bass, guitar, drums, ukulele, and of course vocals.

Some of her favorite roles include Molly (Peter and the Starcatcher, North Coast Rep) Mitzi the Follie (Crazy for You, Ovation) and Mrs Potts (Beauty and the Beast, Blue Rose Theatre). She thanks you all for coming to see her first show at MYT! EMILY DAFOE (Josie) is a freshman at Del Norte High School and is excited to return to Moonlight Youth Theatre. This is Emily’s third production with MYT (Delta Nu, Legally Blonde, 2017), (Featured Dancer, Beauty and the Beast, 2018). Emily is a two time National Youth Arts Nominee for Outstanding lead performance for Gabriella in High School Musical 2 and Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She’d like to thank MYT for giving her the opportunity to return to the stage, her vocal coach Tiffany Jane Maddox for inspiring her, and her family for their love and support.

LUNA DEL RIO (Ensemble) is excited to be a part of her first production here at MYT. Recently she was a part of Sage Creek High school’s production of Les Misérables. She also enjoys playing tennis and going to the beach. Luna is thrilled to be a part of this musical and hopes you enjoy the show.

SHANNON DOOLEY (Mrs. Gutzman) is sixteen years old and is so happy to be a part of this show! She’d like to thank the creative team, her family, friends and her cat Trix for all of their support. She is also currently playing Morticia Addams in The Addams Family Jr. (CCT). Some of her favorite past roles include, Sarabi in The Lion King Jr., Tweedle Dum in Alice in Wonderland Jr. (Vista Broadway Theater) and Featured Dancer in Thoroughly Modern Millie (CCT).

She was last seen as Cousin Itt & an Ancestor in The Addams Family Musical at the Old Town Temecula Community Theatre in November. She also competed with Temecula Dance Company’s competitive teams for 2 years. Charley wants to thank her Daddy, Mommy, Rhyan & Jack and all her friends & family for their love and support.

RHYAN EDMONDS (Ensemble) is thrilled for her 2nd show with Moonlight Youth Theatre! She was last seen in the Ensemble in Beauty & the Beast. She will also be playing the role of Jojo in Seussical at Murrieta Mesa High School in mid-April. Rhyan was a part of TDC’s Company Teams for 4 years and was crowned Petite Miss Star Systems last year for her solo. Rhyan wants to thank all her friends & family for their love and support.

SIERRA FISHER (Ensemble) is excited to be performing in her very first show. Making new friends and experiencing what a show is like has been really fun for her. She is glad to be starting off her theatre career with MYT.

BEN GARON (Mr. Scary/Daddy) is very excited to be part of his 3rd production with MYT. He is a freshman at Coastal Academy HS. Performing since he was 7 years old, some of Ben’s favorite roles include Lumiere (CAMS - Beauty & the Beast) Wilbur Turnblad (Star Theater - Hairspray) and King Julian (MYT - Madagascar Jr) Thanks to his family and friends for their support and the great cast and crew of Junie B! She enjoys singing, dancing and playing piano. Some of her favorite roles include: Pherb Trout & Oompa Loompa (Willy Wonka, CYT) and Jolly the Elf (Elf Jr., CYT). Sienna loves Jesus, her family, friends and her dog Lily. She would like to thank the artistic team for this opportunity.

John 3:16 JACK GEMMELL (Sheldon) is thrilled to be performing in his 7th MYT show with this fantastic cast! Jack is very involved in school and loves to volunteer in his community. Some of Jack’s favorite roles include: The Music Man (Child Ensemble), Willy Wonka Jr (Charlie Bucket), James and the Giant Peach Jr (Grasshopper), and Beauty and the Beast (Featured Dancer). HOPE HARRIS (Mother/Student) is thrilled to be in her first MYT production! Hope has been doing theater for 6 years now and has loved every minute of it. Her favorite past roles are: Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Hodel (Fiddler on the Roof), Emily (Elf Jr.) and Louisa (Sound of Music).

She also enjoys golf, tennis, and playing guitar.

GRACIE HOWARD (Lucille) is 11 years old and super exited to be performing again with MYT. She loved being a part of MYT’s Beauty and the Beast and couldn’t wait to return for another production. Other favorite roles include Annie, Tiny Tim, Young Fiona, Little Cosette and Molly.

Gracie’s interests are many! She LOVES acting, singing, dancing, tumbling, cooking, baking, volleyball, ukulele, piano and art! She’s appeared on Masterchef Junior for two seasons and has her own fundraising baking business called “A Little Bite of Heaven”. She thanks MYT, her parents and God for providing this opportunity. One of her favorite songs in this production is “When Life Gives You Lemons”. Enjoy the show!

GRACE KOUMARAS (Ensemble) is enthralled to be in Junie B. Jones as her first big production at MYT. She is grateful to have started out with such an astounding cast and the amazing directors!

She looks forward to the years to come and is excited for the adventures that await.

KEELEY MASON (Ensemble) is 11 years old. Keeley is making her debut here at Moonlight Youth. This will be Keeley’s fifth musical theatre production. When not performing or rehearsing she loves making slime, sketching, sewing and watching shows on the Discovery Channel with her Papa. She’d like to thank everyone at Moonlight Youth for this opportunity and she hopes you enjoy the show.

ITZEL MEZA-RUIZ (Ensemble) is 13 years old and very excited to be back at Moonlight Youth Theatre. This is her 10th show in North County. Some of her favorite past roles include The Little Mermaid (Ariel), The Wizard of Oz (Scarecrow), High School Musical (Ensemble), and Beauty and The Beast (Ensemble). When Itzel isn’t performing she enjoys reading, singing, playing the piano, hanging out with friends, playing Volleyball and running Track and Field.

She’s excited for her 3rd appearance with MYT (Once on This Island and Beauty and the Beast). Her other San Diego credits includes roles with Moonlight Amphitheatre (The Wizard of Oz) and the Lythgoe Family Panto Peter Pan & Tinker Bell, A Pirate’s Christmas (Lost Boy), and A Snow White Christmas (Dwarf/Villager). Blanche thanks her teachers and family for all their love and support.

ALICE POWELL (Ensemble) is 12 years old and is 6th grader at La Paloma Elementary. Some of her favorite roles include a Penguin in Madagascar Jr. (MYT), Mrs. Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (C.A.S.T) and Cubby the Lost Boy, Peter Pan Jr (Legacy). Alice would like to thank her family, friends and teachers for being so supportive. Thank you and enjoy the show!

LUCY POWELL (Chenille) is 13 years old and from Fallbrook. Some of her favorite roles include Zookeeper Zoe - Madagascar Jr. (Moonlight Youth Theatre) and Willy Wonka - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (C.A.S.T.). Lucy has also taken part other MYT activities including the MYT Holiday Show Choir and a stage manager intern for MYT’s Spelling Bee. She would like to thank her mom, grandparents, Natalie, and all the people who made Junie B. Jones happen especially Maddy, Caelan and Mike! Enjoy the show!

DAYLYN REESE (Ensemble) loves performing. She was recently in Star Theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. Some of her other credits include: Aviara Oaks Middle School’s production of Spamalot, Star Theatre’s production of Hairspray, & Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She is a freshman at Carlsbad High School, on the Speech and Debate Team, and involved in the dance program. She thanks her friends and family; as well as all the cast, crew, and artistic team for everything.

CONOR SIMON (Lennie) I’m a freshman at Mission Vista. I’m really excited to be a part of this student led Moonlight Production of Junie B. Jones. This is my 9th Moonlight production, and I’d like to thank all the people I’ve worked with over the past 6 years I’ve been doing theater.

I’ve learned so much, and appreciate all the opportunities. Special shout-out to my family, and especially my Mom for always encouraging me, and being there for me. Have a great show everyone!

SCOTTIE SMITH (Grace) is thrilled to be part of Junie B Jones. She has been seen in MYT’s Beauty and the Beast, Madagascar Jr. and James and the Giant Peach. She performed in Yo! Vikings, A Tale of Two Cities, and The Wizard of Oz. She first performed in An American Christmas at Lamb’s Players Theatre and was seen in the projections in The Darryl Hammond Project at the La Jolla Playhouse. Scottie attends McAuliffe Elementary and is in the 4th grade. Many thanks to Maddy, Abby, Lyndon, Caelen, and the Bradfords for believing in her.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another’s struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.

Based on the beloved holiday New Line Cinema holiday film, this hilarious fish-out-ofwater comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity.

Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

PRODUCER’S NOTE

Moonlight Youth Theatre is proud to have provided over 25 years of theatre education to students all over San Diego County. In 2016, we expanded our educational outreach and began a new partnership with The Vista Education Foundation. Through a generous annual donation, VEF has helped make it possible for dozens of students each year to be exposed to the “behind- the-scenes” magic of live theatre through our Theatre Internship Program. Students have the opportunity to work in a hands-on environment collaborating, designing and learning from theatre professionals. This method of learning has been so effective that it is being introduced in local schools as a means of integrating art with education. In 2018, MYT produced it’s first-ever student-led show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. With our second student-led production, Junie B. Jones the Musical, interns continue to be an integral part of our educational program, working on all aspects of the production. OCTOBER 5 | 7:30 PM Tickets: $10 - $55 James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece. This one-night-only fundraising concert version of this modern classic brings to life the story of a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. With an all-star cast of Moonlight favorites, this is an evening you won’t want to miss!
