WELCOME BACK TO THE MOONLIGHT! Dear Friends, We are so thrilled to welcome you back to The Moonlight and our first family show since 2019: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. As you are watching the show tonight, you will see many moving parts on stage: special effects, sets and scenery changes, stage lighting and numerous other details that are performed on cue.

(Left to right) Jennifer Bradford, Many designers, crew members, and Stanley D. Cohen, Steven Glaudini and Colleen Kollar Smith technicians contribute to make these intricacies come to fruition, but the individuals at the helm are the remarkable members of our stage management teams.

It is appropriate in the Year of the Stage Manager to celebrate these unsung heroes of the theatre. They are responsible for scheduling and running rehearsals. They serve as the liaison between the director and the rest of the creative team. From opening night through the closing night, they ensure that the director’s vision of the show remains in place. Their most visible job function is to call the sound, lighting, scenery, and special effects cues in the dark from the back of the amphitheatre in the sound and lighting booth.

Tonight, all those elements are being overseen by Stanley D. Cohen, who we refer to as the “Rolls-Royce of Stage Managers.” Stanley has stage managed more than 70 productions at The Moonlight. But his involvement extends beyond his role as a stage manager. He is also one of our major donors through his family business, Atlantic & Pacific Management. At the Moonlight Cultural Foundation’s Ruby Gala in June, Stanley was honored with the 2021 Moonlight Ovation Award for his exceptional generosity, dedication, and vision on behalf of The Moonlight.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR When Beauty and the Beast opened in 1994, I was one of the first people to witness what would be the beginning of a long run of Disney successes on Broadway. It was a brilliant combination of a great story, an incredible score from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, and a strong heroine for which the world was aching. It would be less than a year until both Bill Burns, our choreographer, and I would be part of the original Los Angeles company. An adventure that spanned over the next three or four years, including the Palace Theatre on Broadway.

This adapted version from Linda Wolverton (based on a tale as old as time) keeps the focus on the strength and courage of our heroine. She created a character who is a Jamie Torcellini positive role model for young girls. Belle is an avid reader, who is open to new ideas, and “she has a point of view of her life and that doesn’t necessarily involve a man getting her there.” Unlike Snow White, she isn’t waiting for a Prince to save her. She takes control of her destiny by sacrificing her life for that of her father’s. A selfless and courageous action.

While the curse that befalls this castle and all its inhabitants is punishment for failing to see past an ugly exterior, Belle shows us that beauty is found within.

Everybody deserves love. Sometimes you must look deep, and you might just find your Prince in disguise.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY MIKAYLA AGRELLA (Babette) is thrilled and grateful to be back at The Moonlight!

Since moving to SoCal, Mikayla’s been seen as Cassie in A Chorus Line (Welk Resort Theatre), and in West Side Story as Anita (Performance Riverside) and Consuelo/ Somewhere Soloist (Moonlight). She’s performed across the world singing for Azamara Club Cruises and Royal Caribbean, and in Osaka at Universal Studios Japan.

Regional credits include Johanna in Sweeney Todd (The Long Center), Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime (Park Playhouse), and Hope in Urinetown (Boothbay Playhouse). GERILYN BRAULT (Ensemble/Wardrobe u/s) is overwhelmed to return to theatre and The Moonlight in this magical show. Other San Diego theatre credits include Intrepid Theatre Company, New Village Arts, San Diego Musical Theatre, Diversionary, Oceanside Theatre Company, and North Coast Rep. She is an Associate Faculty member in Theatre at MiraCosta College and Grossmont College, and the Artistic Director for Carlsbad Playreaders. She has an MFA in Acting from Purdue University and a BA in Musical Theatre from Chico State. Extra thanks this year to her parents for their support in such difficult times.

LAURA BUENO (Ensemble/Mrs. Potts u/s) is a San Diego Opera core chorister of 17 years and most recently a soloist in One Amazing Night and Maria de Buenos Aires. She has also performed with Lyric Opera San Diego in such roles as Gigi (Gigi), Tessa (The Gondoliers), Petra (A Little Night Music), Hope (Anything Goes), Iolanthe (Iolanthe), Peep Bo (The Mikado), Sophie De Palma (Master Class) with Ion Theater, Anna 1 (Seven Deadly Sins) with Bodhi Tree Concerts, and several shows with San Diego Musical Theater. ZANE CAMACHO (Lefou) is delighted to be making his Moonlight debut as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast. Recent credits include Sister Act (Ensemble, Performance Riverside), Newsies (Spot Conlon/Ensemble, Performance Riverside), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Quasimodo, Legendary CLO), As You Like It (Duke Fredrick/Senior, UCSD), and Spring Awakening (Georg, RCC) for which he received an Irene Ryan Award nomination. He will be graduating from UC San Diego next spring with a BA in Theatre.

SANDY CAMERON (Ensemble) is thrilled to make her Moonlight debut! She will be a senior at Santa Fe Christian and currently dances with Inspired Movement Ballet Conservatory. She recently attended the 2021 American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive. Credits include Mouse Queen (Nutcracker), Simeon’s Wife/Tango Dancer (Joseph), and Featured Role/Student Choreographer (Godspell). BETS MALONE (Mrs. Potts) got her start right here at The Moonlight in the premiere production of Oliver!. She originated the role of Suzy Simpson in the hit show The Marvelous Wonderettes and can be heard on three Wonderette albums. JENNA LEA ROSEN (Belle) is thrilled to be telling a tale as old as time. JERALD VINCENT (Cogsworth) is no stranger to the Disney catalog and is excited to make his debut with Moonlight Stage Productions as Cogsworth. He recently finished the First National Tour of Disney’s Aladdin portraying the role of the Sultan and was an original Broadway company member of Aida where he portrayed the Nubian King Amanassaro.

Jerald was also a member of the First National Tour of Beauty and the Beast where he was the only African American actor to play the Beast. Doing this show again feels like returning home. He was an original company member of Frozen at the Hyperion Theater as Grand Pappie. His other work includes the First National Tours of The Producers and Funny Girl.

Regional theater credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Showboat, Man of La Mancha, Guys and Dolls and Kiss Me Kate. He has numerous film and television credits. Special love and thanks to Jeanette and Shirley.

JAMIE TORCELLINI (Director) returns to The Moonlight after directing Moonlight’s Matilda in 2019 and is overjoyed to welcome you back to live theatre! Previously, he has appeared at Moonlight as Max Bialystock in The Producers, Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Patsy in Spamalot, Igor in Young Frankenstein, and Bill Snibson in Me and My Girl. As a Director/Choreographer, Jamie has mounted The 39 Steps, The Producers, The Mystery of Irma Vep, The Andrews Brothers, The Last 5 Years, Tell Me on a Sunday, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Pirates of Penzance, My Fair Lady, Me and My Girl, How to Succeed..., West Side Story, Life Could Be a Dream, Kiss Me Kate, and Grease. Jamie also assisted on both the Stuart Little films starring Gena Davis and Hugh Laurie.

Jamie has been seen on Broadway in Cats (Mr. Mistoffelees), Little Johnny Jones (Standby for Donny Osmond), Me and My Girl (Standby for Jim Dale), Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Man of La Mancha (Barber), Beauty and the Beast (Lefou), and the original company of Billy Elliot.

BILL BURNS (Choreographer) has been a director, choreographer and performer in the entertainment industry for more than 40 years. He performed in the Los Angeles company of Beauty and the Beast, later supervising the show on Broadway and directing and choreographing productions regionally. Bill has directed and choreographed U.S. and International companies of The Producers and Japanese productions of On The Town, Curtains and My One & Only. He also served as Resident Choreographer for the U.S. premiere of Dirty Dancing, the Musical and is currently the Associate Choreographer for the North American Tour of Anastasia. On television, Bill was Assistant Choreographer on Happy Birthday Hollywood, Liberty Weekend Opening Ceremonies, The Academy Awards and most recently, the Melania Christmas and Melania Goodbye numbers on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

ELAN McMAHAN (Music Director & Conductor) is honored to be music directing her 57th production with The Moonlight. Her work can be heard on many San Diego stages, including The Old Globe’s annual Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! She has received critical acclaim, including three Craig Noel Outstanding Musical Direction Awards from the San Diego Critics Circle, most recently for Moonlight’s award-winning production of In The Heights in 2017. Elan holds music degrees from Brigham Young University and the St. Louis Conservatory of Music.

She is an associate faculty member at MiraCosta College. Elan thanks her fellow Moonlight artists and the theatre’s patrons for 40 fabulous years on the hill!

STEVEN GLAUDINI (Producing Artistic Director) It was twenty-five years ago that Steve made his Moonlight debut as Smee in Peter Pan and it has been a love affair ever since. Steven credits The Moonlight with the start of his professional career which has led him to several positions including: five years as Artistic Director/Producer at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach. At MTW, Steve has directed Monty Python’s Spamalot, Annie (starring Andrea McArdle), Little Shop of Horrors, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, All Shook Up, The Pajama Game, The Pirates Of Penzance (starring Rex Smith), The Full Monty and five years as the Executive Director/Producer of Performance Riverside. Steven was honored by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle with the Craig Noel Award for Producer of the Year for 2014.

COLLEEN KOLLAR SMITH (Executive Producer) is honored to serve as the Executive Producer for The Moonlight. A native Vistan, she first performed here in the youth production of Cinderella and over time became co-director for the same program. A graduate of USD’s Nonprofit Leadership and Management Master’s Program, Colleen has worked as the Executive Director of San Diego Musical Theatre and Director of Development for Lamb’s Players Theatre. While at Lamb’s, Colleen was also a member of the resident ensemble where she performed in/choreographed dozens of productions, co-created the long-running musical Mixtape, and orchestrated the Guinness World Record breaking event and fundraiser 100 Hours of Stories. She is thrilled to watch her own kids, Scottie and Pepper make their memories at The Moonlight.

It began with a walk in the park…

On a breezy spring day in 1981, Kathy Brombacher took a walk in Brengle Terrace Park. Upon seeing a Kathy Brombacher, Founding Artistic Director Emeritus bare cement stage set against the backdrop of tall eucalyptus trees, she conceived the idea of summer musicals under the stars performed with live orchestras. Assembling a community of theatre makers, the “Vista Summer Theatre Festival” produced two musicals, Oliver! and The Boyfriend in 1981. From every year on, except for 2020, The Moonlight has produced 220 musicals and plays in the Amphitheatre and the AVO Playhouse in downtown Vista.

In our 40th anniversary summer season, we celebrate the gifts theatre bring, the great stories that unfold on our stage, the beauty of live music, and the people who make the magic happen.

For 25 years, Moonlight Youth Theatre has provided award-winning theatrical training to the North County community. MYT offers programs designed for youth from age 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance. We also have a dynamic internship program for those who wish to work “behind the scenes.”

We are committed to providing an education in theatre that encourages teamwork and leadership skills and fosters the development of confidence, creativity, and consideration for others in the context of a professional environment. Educational opportunities are staffed by professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors, and technical professionals. Throughout the year, we provide opportunities to learn about, participate in, and experience the magic of live theatre and performance.

Founded in 1992 as an auxiliary of the Moonlight Cultural Foundation, the Moonlight Angels provide fundraising and volunteer support to the Moonlight each year. Since 2000, the Angels have raised over $650,000 and provided hundreds of hours of volunteer labor.
