WELCOME BACK TO THE MOONLIGHT! Dear Friends, We are thrilled to FINALLY welcome you to our highly anticipated 40th Anniversary Summer Season. After over a year of being shuttered, we cannot think of a better show to open our season than the beautiful Once On This Island. This retelling of The Little Mermaid fairytale celebrates two key components of our mission at The Moonlight, community and storytelling. For more than 40 years, The Moonlight has been a community hub where we have welcomed generations of families to delight in the magic of storytelling. The only thing more thrilling than welcoming new members through our gates is welcoming back audience members who were once brought here as children. Now, they are bringing their own children to experience the magic of theatre, continuing the legacy and ensuring the future of The Moonlight. For those of you who attend all four productions this summer, you will notice that the power of community and storytelling is a common thread running through the season. Tonight, with Once On This Island, you’ll experience the power of love while Beauty and the Beast conveys the message of acceptance. Later in the summer, A Chorus Line tells the real-life stories of the heroes of the theatre — the chorus dancers. The final show of the season, On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan, honors heritage and believing in those you love. At the end of the evening tonight, you will hear the cast sing about some of the reasons why “we tell the story” — among them, life, pain, love, grief, hope, and faith. As we reflect on our time away from the theatre this past year, each of these resonate deeply, but none more than the final reason. YOU are why we tell the story. Thank you for being with us tonight and part of our community. We’ve missed you. Sincerely,

Colleen Kollar Smith Executive Producer

Steven Glaudini Producing Artistic Director

Jennifer Bradford Foundation Executive Director

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Why we tell the story…

Paul David Bryant

Unlike many of today’s modern-day musicals with their many twists and turns, Once On This Island is, at its core, a beautifully straightforward and human story of community, family, and loved ones. Tonight, we will take you to a beautiful Caribbean Island in the Antilles. Although its inhabitants may not have much in the ways of material possessions, they have an abundance of joy.

On the island, there is a historic division between islanders. Ti Moune, a member of the “peasant” class is our guide on this journey who teaches us that we all have fears and obstacles that we must face. She challenges us to follow our hearts against ALL odds and at any cost. She also proves without a doubt that “love is stronger than death.” I am deeply grateful that you have chosen to take this journey with us tonight. The company and I hope you can reflect upon the stories that you have woven together in your own life, so that you inspire future generations of loved ones and lead them towards hope, love, and faith. Why do you tell your story?

Paul David Bryant Director & Choreographer 10

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF

Broadway's Best Under the Stars!

Oliver!, The Moonlight’s inaugural production. July 1981.

It began with a walk in the park… On a breezy spring day in 1981, Kathy Brombacher took a walk in Brengle Terrace Park. Upon seeing a bare cement stage set against the Kathy Brombacher, backdrop of tall eucalyptus trees, she Founding Director Emeritus conceived the idea of summer musicals under the stars performed with live orchestras. Assembling a community of theatre makers, the “Vista Summer Theatre Festival” produced two musicals, Oliver! and The Boyfriend in 1981. From ever year on, except for 2020, The Moonlight has produced 219 musicals and plays in the Amphitheatre and the AVO Playhouse in downtown Vista. In our 40th anniversary summer season, we celebrate the gifts theatre bring, the great stories that unfold on our stage, the beauty of live music, and the people who make the magic happen. Thank you for taking this journey with us. “We tell the story.” Once On This Island

For 25 years, Moonlight Youth Theatre has provided award-winning theatrical training to the North County community. MYT offers programs designed for youth from age 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance. We also have a dynamic internship program for those who wish to remain “behind the scenes.” We are committed to providing an education in theatre that encourages teamwork and leadership skills and fosters the development of confidence, creativity, and consideration for others in the context of a professional environment. Educational opportunities are staffed by professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors, and technical professionals. Throughout the year, we provide opportunities to learn about, participate in, and experience the magic of live theatre and performance. Tickets to our upcoming productions are available at moonlightstage.com. For more information visit www.MoonlightFoundation.com or email Mike Bradford, Director of Arts Education, at mike@moonlightfoundation.com.

Founded in 1992 as an auxiliary of the Moonlight Cultural Foundation, the Moonlight Angels provide fundraising and volunteer support to the Moonlight each year. Since 2000, the Angels have raised over $650,000 and provided hundreds of hours of volunteer labor. The Angels are active and dynamic, always ready to plan fundraising projects, usher for performances, and sell opportunity tickets at shows! The Angels annual membership drive, “Friends of the Moonlight Angels” is going on now and we encourage all members of the Moonlight Family to join! For more information visit moonlightstage.com.
