WELCOME TO A CHORUS LINE Dear Friends, In the early 1970s, Broadway was in a slump. Musicals were flopping and Broadway dancers found themselves without employment. Along came two dancers, Michon Peacock and Tony Stevens, who had an idea to create a performing troupe of Broadway dancers. They took their concept to their friend and choreographer Michael Bennett, who got his start as a Broadway chorus dancer. But Bennett had another idea: a new musical about chorus dancers. On a wintery Saturday evening in January 1974, Bennett assembled a group of dancers who sat in a circle and told their life stories into a tape recorder for 12 hours (those recordings still exist). There was so much material, a second session was held and recorded. These stories, along with additional material contributed by the dancers as the show was developed in its workshop phase, would form the nexus of the its story. There was no real script in the show’s development phase. Each role was organically created suiting the talents and the personality of the person playing it. Composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Edward Kleban fashioned songs for the show as characters were developed. The workshop period of the show was pioneering as cast members weren’t used to being such a major part of the show’s creative process.

When A Chorus Line opened in 1975, it was such a hit that it secured the Pulitzer Prize and other major awards going on to become one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history.

Since we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Moonlight and A Chorus Line is part of that celebration, the timing of honoring the backbone of every production — the chorus dancers — couldn’t be more appropriate. For all the artists over the past four decades who have danced and soared on and above the boards of The Moonlight’s stage, we celebrate you, your lives, and your stories.

When the opportunity to direct and choreograph A Chorus Line was proposed to me, I became excited because it is unquestionably one of the greatest musicals of our times.

A Chorus Line represents the angst, insecurity, and passion of the working artist. It is not an easy life and art is not, nor has it ever been, easy.

One of the messages of A Chorus Line — tenacity, hanging tough and overcoming rejection — hits close to home for me on many levels, but I will never forget the pain and wretchedness that comes from doing what I love. I also learned that it could toughen your fiber. It gives you strength to spring back. Follow your heart, know that it can be risky and sometimes painful, but always adventurous. It can as well build character.

Without the support of an audience, the art of theatre would not exist. Thank you for your support. Ah-5-6-7-8!

Xavier is a metro Detroit native and studied musical theatre in NYC. He has directed, choreographed, and performed in many shows coast to coast. Recent California credits: Mamma Mia! (Eddie) at Candlelight Pavilion, Peter Pan (Dance Captain) for Performance Riverside and Hairspray (Gilbert) at the Norris Theatre. She is a recent graduate of the Musical Theatre Conservatory at the Orange County School of the Arts and will be attending Stanford University this fall.

JEFFREY SCOTT PARSONS (Mike) is a musical theatre actor, director, and choreographer. Credits at Moonlight Amphitheatre include Bobby Child in Crazy for You, Billy Crocker in Anything Goes, and Sparky in Forever Plaid. His performance as the Emcee in Cabaret (Welk Resort) earned him a nomination from the San Diego Critics Circle. His one man show COMFY was gifted the Billy Barnes Award for Best Cabaret Performance. As a choreographer, he received an LA Stage Alliance nomination for Dames At Sea (Sierra Madre Playhouse). He’s the host of “A Musical Theatre Podcast” which can be heard on all major podcast platforms and is a proud member of Musical Theatre Guild and Actors’ Equity. HECTOR GUERRERO (Director & Choreographer) is happy to return to The Moonlight where he choreographed West Side Story (San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Resident Musical). Hector has traveled throughout the world as a director, choreographer, performer, and master teacher working extensively in film, television, theatre, and opera. He is one of a few approved by the Robbins Rights Trust to reproduce Jerome Robbins’ West Side Story which he has set throughout the United States, China, and for the Shakespeare Festival. In New York City, he choreographed Gimme A Break! (Transport Group) and Concert of Excellence (Lincoln Center). At the Hollywood Bowl, he was the assistant choreographer for their production of A Chorus Line. Other director and choreographer credits include - INTERNATIONAL: Big Fish (China Premiere), Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Hair. REGIONAL: Bye Bye Birdie, Evita, 42nd Street, In the Heights, My Fair Lady, Oliver!, Singin’ in the Rain, and White Christmas. TELEVISION: “Live with Regis and Kelly.” COMMERCIALS: Scope (with Ryan Seacrest). OPERA: Carmen.

RANDI RUDOLPH (Music Director & Conductor) couldn’t be happier to be back at Moonlight this summer – it has been a wonderful journey since Annie Get Your Gun many moons ago! Both on the podium and behind the scenes, her work in musical theater and opera is innovative and interdisciplinary, and she is committed to creating and performing collaborative music across all genres. She has served as conductor, music director, and pianist for productions throughout the country, working with theaters including The Phoenix Theatre Company, Red Mountain Theatre, and Highlands Playhouse. She received the Louis J. Sudler Prize in Music for conducting and was named a semi-finalist in the national American Prize competition for her work in musical theater conducting.

As a teacher and educator, Randi has a private vocal coaching, audition prep, and piano studio. In addition to her career as a collaborative pianist, she performs on violin, harpsichord, voice, and organ.

She holds a DMA in Conducting from Arizona State University, a MM in Conducting from Ithaca College, and a BA in Music from Stanford University. WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY DEVON HUNT (Associate Music Director) is a Southern California native and the Director of Musical Theatre at Oklahoma State University. His work behind the table includes The Theory of Relativity (Director/Music Director), Moonlight’s Beauty and the Beast (Asst. Music Director), James and the Giant Peach (Asst.

Music Director), and She Loves Me (Asst. Director). He has also been seen onstage in productions including The Tale of Despereaux (Swing, The Old Globe); A Chorus Line (Richie, Welk Resorts Theatre); The Producers (Ensemble, Moonlight Amphitheatre); She Loves Me (Georg, SDSU); and James and the Giant Peach (Grasshopper, SDSU). Devon holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and an MM in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland. He is an Equity Membership Candidate and the South West Regional Director for the Musical Theatre Educators’ Alliance.

JENNIFER EDWARDS (Lighting Designer & Technical Director) is so grateful to be a part of The Moonlight’s reopening season with lighting design for A Chorus Line and Once On This Island.

Jennifer was recently hired as the fulltime Technical Director of The Moonlight after having worked previously as lighting designer for several seasons. Some favorite lighting designs include Matilda and Newsies at The Moonlight; Mamma Mia! and Kiss of the Spider Woman at the Welk Resorts Theatre; Broomstick (L.A. Ovation Award Nominee) and My Mañana Comes (NAACP Theatre Award Winner) at the Fountain Theatre. Jennifer is also a proud AEA Stage Manager since 1994. Jennifer is forever grateful to all her theatre families for making the magic that enlightens, inspires and entertains. Enjoy!

JIM ZADAI (Sound Designer) is happy to be back and is currently in his 9th season at The Moonlight. FELICIA BROSCHART (Costume Coordinator) returns to The Moonlight after coordinating costumes on Beauty and the Beast and Once On This Island. She is honored and thrilled to be a part of this talented production team. Her costuming career to date has mostly been in San Diego’s community theater world. Recently, she has been working with Moonlight Youth Theatre costuming Beauty and the Beast, Elf and Madagascar. Before the pandemic hit, she won awards for her costume designs in Little Women (Patio Playhouse) and The Little Mermaid (Carlsbad Community Theater).

GABRIELLE TILLINGHAST (Properties Coordinator) is thrilled to be returning for her fifth season. Recent production credits include Palomar College’s Oh, Beautiful, The Children’s Hour, Sila, Welk Theater’s Menopause The Musical, Welcome Home For The Holidays, A Chorus Line, MYT’s Beauty and The Beast, Elf Jr., Junie B. Jones, and Freaky Friday. She thanks her family and friends for their endless support. After this past year, it’s good to be back. Thanks for supporting live theatre!

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY COLLEEN KOLLAR SMITH (Executive Producer) is honored to serve as the Executive Producer for The Moonlight. A native Vistan, she first performed here in the youth production of Cinderella and over time became co-director for the same program. A graduate of USD’s Nonprofit Leadership and Management Master’s Program, Colleen has worked as the Executive Director of San Diego Musical Theatre and Director of Development for Lamb’s Players Theatre. While at Lamb’s, Colleen was also a member of the resident ensemble where she performed in/choreographed dozens of productions, co-created the long-running musical Mixtape, and orchestrated the Guinness World Record breaking event and fundraiser 100 Hours of Stories. She is thrilled to watch her own kids, Scottie and Pepper make their memories at The Moonlight.

STEVEN GLAUDINI (Producing Artistic Director) It was twenty-five years ago that Steve made his Moonlight debut as Smee in Peter Pan and it has been a love affair ever since. Recent Moonlight credits have been Director of the recent hits: West Side Story (2020 Craig Noel Award Outstanding Resident Musical), The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Big Fish, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray (San Diego Critics Award Nomination for Best Director), Miss Saigon (San Diego Critics Award Nomination for Outstanding Musical), Cats, Les Misérables (2008 San Diego Critics Award for Best Director), West Side Story (2007 San Diego Critics Award Outstanding Musical), Cabaret, and Children of Eden. Steven credits The Moonlight with the start of his professional career which has led him to several positions including: five years as Artistic Director/Producer at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach. At MTW, Steve has directed Monty Python’s Spamalot, Annie (starring Andrea McArdle), Little Shop of Horrors, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, All Shook Up, The Pajama Game, The Pirates Of Penzance (starring Rex Smith), The Full Monty and five years as the Executive Director/Producer of Performance Riverside. Steven was honored by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle with the Craig Noel Award for Producer of the Year for 2014.

It began with a walk in the park…

On a breezy spring day in 1981, Kathy Brombacher took a walk in Brengle Terrace Park. Upon seeing a Kathy Brombacher, Founding Artistic Director Emeritus bare cement stage set against the backdrop of tall eucalyptus trees, she conceived the idea of summer musicals under the stars performed with live orchestras. Assembling a community of theatre makers, the “Vista Summer Theatre Festival” produced two musicals, Oliver! and The Boyfriend in 1981. From every year on, except for 2020, The Moonlight has produced 220 musicals and plays in the Amphitheatre and the AVO Playhouse in downtown Vista.

In our 40th anniversary summer season, we celebrate the gifts theatre bring, the great stories that unfold on our stage, the beauty of live music, and the people who make the magic happen.

For 25 years, Moonlight Youth Theatre has provided award-winning theatrical training to the North County community. MYT offers programs designed for youth from age 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance. We also have a dynamic internship program for those who wish to work “behind the scenes.”

We are committed to providing an education in theatre that encourages teamwork and leadership skills and fosters the development of confidence, creativity, and consideration for others in the context of a professional environment. Educational opportunities are staffed by professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors, and technical professionals. Founded in 1992 as an auxiliary of the Moonlight Cultural Foundation, the Moonlight Angels provide fundraising and volunteer support to the Moonlight each year. Since 2000, the Angels have raised over $650,000 and provided hundreds of hours of volunteer labor. The Angels are active and dynamic, always ready to plan fundraising projects, usher for performances, and sell opportunity tickets at shows!
