DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Alice in Wonderland is not just a children’s classic or a favorite family film; it’s a celebration of nonsense for anyone who has ever wanted to poke fun at the “grown up” world of learning, politics, and good manners. As much as Alice Liddell (the original Alice, in 1862) must have enjoyed Lewis Carroll’s stories for their whimsical surprises and colorful characters, the real genius of Alice in Wonderland – the reason we are still reading and watching and enjoying his work in 2016 – is its astute, good-humored satire and its affirmation of the power of imagination.

Falling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, I have had the privilege of peeking inside the mind of Lewis Carroll – a brilliant mathematician intrigued by the beauty of chaos, delighted by the logic of nonsense, and frustrated at the rigidity of his Victorian society – not for his own sake, but for children like Alice and her sisters, who were taught too soon to silence their imaginations, keep their dreams to themselves, and repeat lessons: “look up, speak nicely, and don’t twiddle your fingers.”

As Alice journeys through Wonderland, she encounters wild, exaggerated, sometimes terrifying creatures, all of whom mirror the characters in her “real” life. More importantly, Alice’s path is one of self-discovery; she learns to navigate this strange new world and returns to her own, empowered to dream and determined not to hold her tongue.

As you follow Alice down the rabbit hole, let loose your sense of whimsy, and enjoy the journey.

And when it’s time to wake up and return home, I hope you will keep dreaming of this golden afternoon. ~ Director Kyle Hawk

KYLE HAWK (Director/Choreographer) is thrilled to be back with Moonlight Youth! Since being back in San Diego he has had the privilege of choreographing with many great youth theaters including CYT, NCSA, SDA and CCHS. Past regional performing credits include Big Fish, Catch Me if You Can, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, Young Frankenstein, Crazy for You (Billy) & Bye Bye Birdie (Mr. Johnson) and Cats (Tumblebrutus). Kyle has also followed his love for dance all over the US performing with the Joffrey Ballet, Inaside Dance Chicago, Giordanos Jazz Dance and Joel Hall Dancers. Kyle would like to thank his Family for their unconditional love and support, JD for pushing the kids to strive for perfection and true professionalism, Moonlight Youth for trusting me and my vision for this show and God for with him ANYTHING is possible!

JD Dumas (Musical Director) is thrilled to be making his Moonlight Youth Theatre debut. Select Music Direction credits include: Shrek (Moonlight Amphitheatre), Reefer Madness (Dark Horse Theatre Company), Lucky Stiff (Weber State University), Sam I Was - a new musical (SLC Fringe Festival), All Shook Up (Centerpoint Legacy Theatre), Beauty & The Beast (Vista High School), and several production shows at Legoland, CA. JD is a three (3) time Meritorious Award recipient for Music Direction through the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Holding a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Weber State University, JD also teaches private voice. Thank you to Mike, the MYT Board, Kyle, and this talented cast for your support and hard work.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Abby Chenoweth (Caucus Race Dancer, Queen’s Court, Oyster, Pansy) Abby is thrilled to be a Caucus Race Dancer, member of the Queen’s Court, an Oyster and a Pansy in this play. She has done several productions with Moonlight Youth Theatre and each time it gets better and better! Dancing, singing and acting are her life! Abby thanks her parents for always being her biggest fans!

Andrew Banderas (March Hare) is a graduate from El Camino High School where he’s been active in theater for the past 3 years. His past performances include The Producers, Little Shop of Horrors and most recently The Government Inspector. This is his first performance with Moonlight Youth Theatre, and he is very excited to be able to be the March Hare for Alice in Wonderland! He would also like to thank his family, friends and Matt Gherna for all the support they give him. Enjoy the show!

Aquila Ewald (Cheshire Cat) is thrilled to play the Cheshire Cat in her first show with the Moonlight Youth Theatre. Aquila attends Valley Middle School in Carlsbad, performing with the Viking Singers and the Showstoppers Show Choir. Her favorite roles include Fiona (Shrek Jr.), Leslie Burke (Bridge to Terabithia), Sebastian (The Little Mermaid), Cat in the Hat (Seussical), and Annie (Annie). When not performing, she loves to study singing & dancing and to get into epic Hamilton rap battles with friends.

Ariana Stevens (Dodgsonland Dancer, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) is a junior at The Grauer School and psyched about her MYT debut! Memorable roles include Gretl–Sound of Music (CYT), Iris–Alice in Wonderland (CYT), and Mrs. Webb–Our Town (Grauer). She enjoys performing, sports-ing, and teaching swim lessons at the YMCA. Thanks Kyle, JD, Elisa, and Mike for this wonderful show and Mom, Dad, Courtney, and Spencer for all their love provided.

Brenna Allen (Flower, Blacklight Dancer, T’Was Brillig Face) is a 7th grader at Lincoln Middle School. She is playing the ensemble roles of Flowers, ’Twas Brillig Faces and Blacklight Dancer. She has been in productions at the Star Theatre, Truax Theatre and Coastal Music Studios. Alice In Wonderland is her first production with the Moonlight Youth Theatre. She would like to thank Matt Gherna for helping her get to where she is today and for encouraging her to audition at MYT. Briana Fisher (Alice Double, Little Violet) is excited about her first appearance with Moonlight Youth Theatre. She has performed a number of roles in some school programs including Stephano in The Tempest, Ghost and Laertes in Hamlet, Bottom in Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Sam in Gold Dust or Bust and singing in the talent show. Briana has taken jazz, ballet, musical theatre, flute and acting classes. She likes to cook and enjoys her Family time. Briana would like to thank her parents for their love and support and appreciates all that she continues to learn through these wonderful experiences.

Brooke Eyler (TweedleDum, Dodgsonland Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) How do you do? Brooke Eyler is ecstatic to be playing Tweedle Dum in Alice and Wonderland Jr. When not on the stage, Brooke enjoys writing, art and being a goofball! Her favorite roles include Ti Moune, Once On This Island, and Cinderella, Into the Woods. She’d like to thank Kyle, James, and the MYT team for this incredible opportunity.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Carina Velona (Caucus Race Dancer, Flower, Blacklight Dancer, Queen’s Court, T’Was Brillig Face) is an “almost” 6th grader who is thrilled to be part of her first Moonlight Youth Theatre production. She has appeared in thirteen other musicals, including A Christmas Carol, Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, Shrek, and her favorite, Seussical. When not performing, Carina loves to swim, to surf, and to cook. Carina thanks her family for their love and support.

Casey Reichenthal (Daisy, Caucus Race Dancer, Blacklight Dancer, Queen’s Court) is a 12 year old 7th grader at Pacific Ridge School. This is her first show with Moonlight Youth Theatre. Casey loves performing and has been doing so in youth theaters for two years. She has learned so much and plans on working to become the best performer she can be. Casey wants to thank Moonlight and the artistic team of Alice Jr. for their help and guidance.

Casey also thanks her parents and Grandma Mamie for all their love and support.

Charlotte Larson (Caucus Race Dancer, Pansy, Oyster, Queen’s Court) is a 4th grader, a bibliophile, and a horsewoman. Her favorite roles have been an ape in the Moonlight Youth Theatre’s Tarzan, and Johnson in her school’s production of California Missions...and More. She would like to thank Aunt Sammy & her dad for their advice, and the Moonlight production team for the opportunity to travel down the rabbit hole.

Chelsea Zarate (Caucus Race Dancer, Blacklight Dancer, Queen’s Court) is a 7 year old first grader at Mission Meadows School. Chelsea is extremely proud to be in her first production, Alice in Wonderland Jr. She participated in MYT’s Holiday Show Choir in 2015.

Chelsea enjoys acting, singing and dancing. She would like to thank her dad, mom, brother Maury, big sister Krystal and baby sister Bella for all their love and support.

Chloe Lu (Caucus Race Dancer, Pansy, Oyster, Queen’s Court) is 10 years old and thrilled to be part of her second MYT production. In her free time, she likes to play video games (especially Minecraft and Roblox), hang out with friends, play with her little sister, and read. She would like to thank her family and friends for all their support and for coming to the show!

Conor Simon (Caucus Race Dancer, King Of Hearts) is so excited to have his first speaking part! He is really honored to have had roles in previous Moonlight Productions, (Music Man, Seussical, Aladdin, and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat). Thanks so much to all my family and friends who support me, and a big shout-out to all the directors, stage managers, and choreographers I’ve worked with in the past who have taught me so much, and have made my theater career so great.

Courtney Conway (Queen of Hearts, Dance Captain, Dodgsonland Dancer, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) 17, is a junior at The Grauer School in Encinitas. She is thrilled to be completing her second show with Moonlight Youth Theatre, after performing as “Jane Porter” in Tarzan this past year. Courtney would like to thank the amazing artistic team for making this so wonderful to be a part of, and the entire Moonlight Board for giving her the opportunities they have over the past year. Courtney would also like to thank her mom, family, friends, and Jonah for their endless love and support. Past credits: Tarzan (MYT), Godspell, The Little Mermaid, Alice In Wonderland, Tom Sawyer, Aladdin, Cinderella, and Just So (CYT).

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Eden Young (TweedleDee, Dodgsonland Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) is 14 years old and is a 10th grader at SDA. This will be her 13th musical production. When not acting Eden loves her pets, hanging out with friends, eating, sleeping and watching movies. She is thrilled to be part of a MYT production! “Well, it’s been nice meeting you, good bye.”

Elise Lu (Pansy, Birthday Girl, Queen’s Court) is excited to make her musical theatre debut with Moonlight Youth Theatre and with big sis, Chloe! Elise is an avid reader and loves making up her own dance routines. She’s a big Star Wars and DWTS fan!

She is thankful for the support of her family, friends and Girl Scout Troops 1193 and 2143. Thank you for coming to see this fun show!

Emily O’Sullivan (Dodgsonland Dancer, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) is 18 years old and recently graduated from La Costa Canyon High School. This is her third time performing in Alice in Wonderland. She has been performing in musical theater productions since she was four. Some of her favorite roles include “Olive” in 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (LCCT) and being in the Dance Core for Tarzan (MYT).

She is excited to make this her last youth production before attending SFSU in the fall.

Emma King (Cheshire Cat Double, Violet, Dodgsonland Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) This is Emma’s first production with Moonlight Youth Theatre. You’ll see her in this production as Violet, a Dodgsonland Dancer, a Royal Card Tapper, and the Cheshire Cat. Emma recently starred as Scout at El Camino High School’s production of To Kill A Mockingbird. She was a competitive gymnast for six years and was recently inducted into International Thespian Society. She would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her through everything she’s done.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Grace Galloway (Dodgsonland Dancer, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) is 15 years old, and will be a sophomore at La Costa Canyon High School this fall. Alice in Wonderland is her first stage production with Moonlight Youth Theatre.

She has also performed in many musicals with Christian Youth Theater and a few other companies. Grace is also involved in improv with Christian Youth Theater, and Comedy Sportz at her school. She gives thanks for everyone who has given her the opportunities she has had to perform on stage. 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Grace Ludlow (Caucus Race Dancer, Blacklight Dancer, Queen’s Court) This is her second Alice in Wonderland experience, last time playing the Dormouse and Daisy. She loves singing, dancing, and theater as well as baking, sewing and playing the piano.

Grace thanks her family and Director Kyle Hawk for this opportunity with Moonlight Youth Theatre.

Hailey Topolovac (Door Mouse, Caucus Race Dancer, Pansy, Oyster) is a third grader at Del Sur Elementary. She has always loved music. Hailey has been taking classes at CYT since she was four. She has performed in The Little Mermaid, Bridge to Terabithia, The Wizard of Oz and Annie Jr. Her passions include singing, acting, reading, and learning to dance. She also competes in triathlons.

Hanna Ruterbusch (Flower, Blacklight Dancer, T’Was Brillig Face, Royal Card) is “super” excited to be performing for you! Hanna is 12-years-old, and this is her first official production. She has starred in the MYT Holiday Show Choir, directed by Ms. Debbie Nicastro. Her greatest achievement, in her own humble opinion, is writing and starring in her own short play! She dedicates her performance to her little sister, Lyndsay, whom she loves very much. She hopes you enjoy the show and have as much fun watching it as she did working in it.

Isabella Patrignani (Caucus Race Dancer, Queen’s Court, Pansy, Baby Oyster) was born in Argentina and is in second grade at SFC. Prior to California, Isabella lived in NYC enjoying the arts, from Broadway to singing, dancing, and playing the piano/guitar. In NY Isabella was in The Little Mermaid, and is very excited about her first production here in California with Moonlight Theatre. Isabella thanks Kylie Kennard and Casey Reichenthal for taking her under their wings; as well as Valentina who supports her always.

Jack Gemmell (Carpenter, Card #2, Dandelion, Caucus Race Dancer) lives in Oceanside and will attend VMMS in the fall. Besides theater, Jack enjoys swimming, reading and riding bikes. Past shows include: Seussical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Music Man, Tarzan, and he most recently played Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka Jr. Jack would like to thank the creative team, cast, and his family for their love and support.

Jacob Morilak (Mad Hatter) is a freshmen and has been in fifteen productions in the past two years. Jacob enjoys playing video games, doing voice acting, and improvisation.

Jacob has been to Comic Con and Nerd Con, and his closet is half full of costumes. He likes conventions, and he also likes tea (unrelated to the Mad Hatter).

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Janae Vigil (Dodgsonland Dancer, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card Tapper, Flower) age 17, was recently in Shrek the Musical with Classical Academy High School. Her favorite shows include Willy Wonka and West Side Story, both performed with MYT. She has been performing tap, jazz, hip-hop, and her favorite, musical theatre dance, since the age of 2. She enjoys choreographing dances. She would like to give a big thank you to Kyle, JD and Elisa for this wonderful opportunity. A special thanks goes out to her friends and family for their support.

Jasmine Torres (Mother Oyster, Flower, Royal Card, Blacklight Dancer) is 18 years old and a senior at El Camino High School. She has been in eight productions including The Producers, The Government Inspector, and Tarzan. When she isn’t on stage, Jasmine can be found behind the camera making films with her friends or writing science fictional short stories. She is very excited to perform at the Avo and would like to thank her friends and family as well as her wonderful cast and director for making it a great experience.

Jessie Darden (Iris, Caucus Race Dancer, Blacklight Dancer) is 18-years-old and a graduating senior this year. As a 3rd grader, she was seen in a CYT production, Bridge of Terabithia, as a tree and she has performed with Moonlight Youth Theatre’s Holiday Show Choir. Jessie loves to sing, to play guitar/piano, and has a passion for performing.

Jonni-Jean Fialkosky (Flower, Blacklight Dancer, T’was Brillig Face) is a 7th grader at Vista Magnet Middle School. Jonni was Fawn and a mermaid in Peter Pan Jr., a Who in Seussical the Musical and an islander in Once On This Island. Jonni was also in Tarzan.

She has performed with MYT’s Holiday Show Choir for the past 3 years. Jonni would like to thank her family and friends. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Josh Bradford (White Rabbit) is 12 years old and in the 8th grade at Roosevelt Middle School. Regional credits include The Music Man (Youth Ensemble) The Who’s Tommy (Young Tommy), The Wizard of Oz (The Mayor of Munchkin City) - Moonlight Stage Productions, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Ladybug Who) - Old Globe Theatre and Lord of the Flies (Perceval) - New Village Arts. Other MYT credits: Disney’s Tarzan (Young Tarzan) and Joseph (Benjamin). Josh can be seen later this Summer in Cygnet Theatre’s production of Gypsy.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Keira Finnerty (Rose Bud, Caucus Race Dancer, Queen’s Court) has been competitively dancing for three years with Evolution Dance Studio in Encinitas. This is her first musical production, and she is thrilled to be a part of this talented group. Keira also plays piano and loves her dogs, Bella & Brownie.

Konnor Morgan (Caterpillar) is attempting a musical for the first time ever, bringing out his “inner caterpillar”, and he hopes to eventually be a wonderful butterfly and fly away with your heart (and maybe some laughs, too!

Kylie Kennard (Alice) is thrilled to be playing Alice in her first MYT production. Past credits include Annie (Annie-SFC), Amaryllis (Music Man-CCT), and many productions with CYT. She also recently performed as one of “Cabaret at the Merc’s 2016 Rising Stars” and as a Cabaret Soloist at the Laurie Beechman Theater in NYC. Kylie would like to thank Errolyn Healy, as well as the MYT board and artistic team for their support. She’s so thankful for each opportunity God gives her to perform. Proverbs 3:5-6 Madi Bobele (Little Violet, Blacklight Dancer) is 12 years old. She lives in Carlsbad and is a student at Valley Middle School. Madi has loved theatre since she was a toddler. She has participated in many shows including Shrek the Musical Jr., Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Schoolhouse Rock and Thump. She has two sisters who share her love for theatre. Madi enjoys times with her friends and family, rollerskating, dancing, singing and being extremely silly. She definitely knows how to have fun and make people smile. Madi is thrilled to be back with Moonlight Youth Theatre and looks forward to upcoming shows.

Magaret Allen (Mathilda, Rose, Tall Alice) is a junior at El Camino High School. She is so excited to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing team of actors and directors. She has been in several productions in the Truax Theatre, and this is her first production with the Moonlight Youth Theatre. She would like to thank her friends and family for their support and all the people who work to make this production come to life. Maggie hopes you enjoy the show!

Mason Ballard (Dodo Bird, Ace) is very excited about his first appearance for the Moonlight Youth Theatre. He has also recently played Flotsam in The Little Mermaid for Star Repertory Theater. In addition to acting and singing, Mason enjoys dancing and photography. He would like to thank his family for their support and encouragement.

Michial Isaac (Doorknob, Dandelion, Caucus Race Dancer) is thrilled to be in his first show directed by Kyle. He has performed in many MYT productions, his favorites as Mike Teavee (Willy Wonka) and The Mayor (Seussical). Most recently he was seen as Rodney in MVHS’ Thoroughly Modern Millie. Represented by AEFH in LA, he pursues a career in TV & Film. He would like to thank the production team for this opportunity.

Mia Foster (Caucus Race Dancer, Pansy, Oyster, Queen’s Court) has been performing since age 3. She has participated in CGTV workshops taught by Disney actors and directors; performed in Kids with Flare as “Stephanie” in the well-renowned ACME Comedy Theater in Hollywood; and LAKidsAct. Mia starred in the “Moustache Smash” commercial featured on the Nickelodeon channel. She is also a vocalist and performed in the 2015 MYT Holiday Show Choir. She thanks Mom and Dad, her acting coach, Adrian R’Mante, for his inspiration, and her voice coach, Debbie Nicastro. 11

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (in alphabetical order) Savannah Taupule (Flower, Caucus Race Dancer, Royal Card, Blacklight Dancer) is 12 years old, and very excited to be in the ensemble for Alice! She has performed as ensemble in Aladdin Jr., Once Upon a Mattress, Honk Jr., as well as Kaa in Jungle Book, and Thomas O’Malley in Aristocats Kids, all while attending Vista Academy. She loves to dance and play volleyball.

Torrance Ortiz (Caucus Race Dancer, Blackilght Dancer, Queen’s Court) is a fourth grader at CMCS. She has been dancing with WDA for four years, and has competed in show stoppers Anaheim 2014 and 2015. She has also performed swing, jazz, tap and ballet folklorico numbers at Knott’s Berry Farm and the Del Mar Fair.

Travis Kramer (Walrus, Card #4, Caucus Race Dancer, Dandelion) is twelve years old and going into the eighth grade in the fall. Alice in Wonderland is Travis’ thirteenth musical theater production and his second performance with Moonlight Youth Theatre.

Travis’ favorite roles have included Les Miserables with Vista High School which he won a M.A.C.Y award for portraying Gavroche and Shrek where he starred as Shrek. He wants to thank the artist team for this incredible experience.

Valentina Patrignani (Caucus Race Dancer, Queen’s Court, Pansy, Baby Oyster) was born in Argentina and is in Second Grade at SFC. Prior to California, Valentina lived in NYC enjoying the arts...from Broadway to singing, dancing and playing the piano. In NY, Valentina was in The Little Mermaid, and is very excited about her first production here in California with Moonlight Theatre. Valentina thanks Kylie Kennard and Casey Reichenthal for taking her under their wings; as well as Isabella who supports her always.

Wyatt VanHazel (Card #4, Caucus Race Dancer, Dandelion) is 10 years old. He attends Buena Vista Elementary in Carlsbad. He enjoys , Legos , Pokémon, making cartoon voices , telling jokes , biking,and playing soccer.

WHAT’S HAPPENING...

For over 20 years, MOONLIGHT YOUTH THEATRE has been providing award-winning theatrical training to the North San Diego County Community. MYT offers programs designed for youth from ages 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance, as well as those who want to remain “behind the scenes”.
