The Why Behind A Wish Motivation is an interesting concept—it can inspire our successes or contribute to our setbacks. It has the power to keep us focused on our future or lose faith in its uncertainty. It can dictate whether we push through the pain during difficult times and choose to challenge ourselves when there is little resistance.

Motivation can be seen in many forms at Make-A-Wish® San Diego. It starts with a small but mighty staff who find daily motivation from first-hand experiences granting over 220 local wishes each year, and the 250 kids who come to San Diego to have their wishes granted. The impact of a wish is tangible, something that can be seen, heard, and felt every day.

Then there is the motivation of over 300 volunteers who serve as wish granters, event committee members, office helpers, photographers, and in other key roles. Volunteers gravitate toward Make-A-Wish for countless reasons—there are those who have been impacted by a wish and want to wish it forward, those who are inspired by the strength of wish kids and families, and those who simply want to be part of the joy that a wish provides. Once volunteers join the Make-A-Wish team, the powerful mission motivates them to stay for many years…even decades for some!

And finally, there is the collective motivation behind the community supporters who make wishes possible. These supporters are comprised of local leaders, individual donors, small and large businesses, and former wish recipients. Whether it’s a relative of someone touched by a wish, a team of employees motivated to be part of something bigger, or an anonymous supporter with a kind heart, without them, wishes would simply not be granted.

When it comes down to it, the impact of a wish motivates everyone involved in many wonderful ways—it can encourage a wish kid to keep fighting during their illness, remind a family they are not alone, and connect a community with a shared purpose for good.

After her son Trevor was granted a wish in 2011, Dawn knew she wanted to help other kids have the same life-changing experience that the wish provided for her son and family.

Dawn became a wish granter in 2016. She also joined the W.I.S.H. Circle with her mom, has engaged several of her family members in a variety of activities supporting Make-A-Wish, and plays a critical role in our Wish It Forward program engaging past wish families in the organization. A Pirate’s Life Although Leona, 6, began aggressive chemotherapy treatments last summer when she was first diagnosed with leukemia, it didn’t stop her from dreaming of the great adventures she would have. Known for her natural spunk and “feisty” spirit, a determined Leona braved the fatigue, nausea, and pain that came along with her illness with a take-no-prisoners attitude. In fact, one of the biggest challenges of getting sick for Leona was the disruption of seeking new escapades with her friends. Unable to enroll in kindergarten this year, combined with the restrictions of going to public places when her immune system was down, Leona wanted a wish that would bring the excitement to her.

Leona declares.

When Leona’s family visited Disneyland, she became spellbound with the allure of pirates and began dreaming of the pirate’s life. “They fight and jump and get on board,” she said, explaining her fascination.

Soon after she began wearing eye patches and playing with toy swords and inviting friends over to play pirate. When Leona’s wish granters asked what her best day ever would be, she envisioned a life-size pirate ship playhouse in her own backyard where she could host all her friends.

Leona’s wish was more than just a playhouse, though, it represented an escape for a child battling cancer.

It provided peace of mind for her family dealing with the restrictions of her rigorous treatment regimen.

And it will serve as a beacon of hope and strength for a brave little girl and her family for years to come.

More Than Medicine.

New research connects wishes and medical outcomes.

Research* shows, and many physicians agree, wishes can help improve a child’s quality of life and produce better health outcomes. In 2015, Make-A-Wish Israel conducted a study to measure how wish experiences influence the medical outcomes of children with cancer. The results revealed that wishes not only increased hope, they also improved the children’s physical and emotional health. About Us OUR MISSION Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

VISION It is our vision that every eligible child will experience a wish come true without delay.

WHO WE ARE—AND WHO WE SERVE At Make-A-Wish San Diego, the goal is simple: to come into a child’s life during a difficult time and provide hope and a much-needed break from the daily challenges they are forced to face. Since our chapter’s inception in 1983, we have granted more than 4,100 wishes for children in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We serve children from all areas of both counties and our demographics span every socio-economic factor and ethnic background. No eligible child is ever turned away, and a family’s financial status, race, or religion has no bearing on whether or not a child will receive a wish.

How We Grant Wishes We have an ambitious vision—to grant the wish of every eligible child in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We believe that wishes change the odds for children fighting critical illnesses; it’s why we do what we do. Wishes have the ability to help kids look past their medical conditions, decrease a family’s anxiety, and bring entire communities together.

Wish Granting Steps There are four steps to granting a wish. Each step builds on the next and creates unforgettable experiences for wish kids and their families.

We rely on medical professionals, parents, and children themselves for referrals. A child with a critical illness who has reached the age of 2½ and is younger than 18 at the time of referral is potentially eligible for a wish.

To be eligible for a wish, the child must be diagnosed with a critical illness that has placed the child’s life in jeopardy.

Our dedicated wish granting volunteers meet with the child, and their family, to help determine the essence of the child’s one true wish.

Along with the support of the community, our team strives to create life-long memories by providing an unforgettable wish experience driven by the child’s creativity.

Gifts of Appreciated Stock Most people are surprised to learn how simple it is to donate appreciated securities to Make-A-Wish San Diego, and why this might be a better option than making a cash donation. If you hold stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have risen in value, and have held them for more than a year and a day, donating appreciated securities ensures yourself and donated the cash from the sale. It can be a smart way to satisfy your personal and charitable goals.

How does it work? You transfer securities to Make-A-Wish San Diego, then, the organization sells them and uses the proceeds to grant more wishes. It’s that simple. Gifts of stock are flexible, as well — you can make an outright donation, or fund a gift that returns payments to you, such as a charitable gift annuity.

Deferred Gifts A deferred gift can also help you balance your financial goals and charitable interests - all while possibly achieving significant tax benefits. Examples of individual deferred or planned gifts would include a bequest, charitable trust, charitable gift annuity, gifts of retirement plans, life insurance, or an endowment. Rocco Skates On I wish to skate in my own backyard Rocco, 11 blood disorder When wish granters met with Rocco, 11, he shared that scooting and skating with his friends was his main motivator to getting healthy throughout all his medical treatments.

Rocco has Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a disease in which the body accumulates too many white blood cells, and in his case, it developed a brain tumor. Because doctors started Rocco on an intense treatment typically reserved for people who have leukemia, he had to miss school for a year.

Whenever he had the energy though, he would head to a skate park, and, when he couldn’t leave his hospital room, he would make fingerboards and skate around indoors. “It’s hard to keep him down,” beamed Rocco’s dad.

When Rocco wished for a skate park in his backyard, Make-A-Wish teamed up with more than two dozen community donors and volunteers to grant his wish. Members of the Associated General Contractors of San Diego, Erickson-Hall Construction Co., Front Rock Inc. and Santec joined forces, along with our new friends at Skatelite. It takes a community to grant every wish!

More than 100 friends, family, and donors joined Rocco and his family to unveil his backyard skate park. “I think it’s the best,” Rocco said of his private skate park, “like it can’t get any better than this.”
