A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

I hope for all of you the holiday season has brought the joy and comfort of family and friends as you celebrated the season and welcomed a new year. The end of the holiday season and the beginning of a new year allows for the opportunity to be reminiscent and thankful for a year that has passed while eagerly anticipating a fresh start, often coupled with a resolution or two that may be long forgotten before the winter thaw.

This year APTA New York ushered in the New Year by setting the course for the new year in pursuit of strengthening our profession and our organization. Similar to other organizations this post pandemic time has been one of reflection of how we, functioned prior to the pandemic, how adaptations were made to continue operationally and how to move forward using the best of both This Insight will enable APTA New York to consolidate and conserve finances, restructure operations, and regain focus on the driving factors of the organization.

Towards the end of last year the APTA New York board of directors considered, adjusted and passed the 2023 budget developed and proposed by the treasurer and finance committee. The tremendous work that goes into the budgeting process of the organization is commendable. This year’s budget is available on the APTA New York website and establishes the foundation for which the work of the organization will proceed in the year to come Components of this year’s budget highlight both attention to fiscal responsibility to the organization and a desire to enhance connections, engagement and interaction with membership.

The first board meeting of 2023 started the new year with a demonstrated focus on strong fiscal management of the organization through a robust conversation regarding the benefits and risks of the potential sale and/or lease of the current APTA New York headquarters This opportunity presents itself as a result of adjustments to operations and APTA New York staff post-pandemic reflection which demonstrated our office staff was able to meet the needs of membership without the need for physical property. A task force is in the process of being established to determine the best course of action for the fiscal health of APTA New York while ensuring the needs of membership are met at the high standard customary to our office staff.

ALETTERFROMOURPRESIDENTCONTINUED...

On February 8th, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of APTA New York hosted an informational town hall style meeting open to members and nonmember guests. I am hopeful this will be the first of many interactive meetings to be held this year as a means to better interact and engage our community.

Our work in the public policy arena in the new year recognizes changes to committee chair appointments in Albany which may impact pending APTA New York legislative and legislature's efforts. In response to these changes APTA New York, with assistance from our lobbying firm, will strive to inform new committee leadership about our profession and educate them on the wants of our membership to help advance our profession. The Public Policy committee and chapter staff are organizing for Lobby Day April 26th, 2023.

I strongly encourage everyone interested in attending to register early, which will allow for better planning, and improved efficiency of volunteers to be able to provide attendees with the necessary information including updates and talking points on upcoming bills. If you have never been involved in speaking with your representative this is an opportunity to speak to them as a person, and as a representative of the field of Physical Therapy, to exhibit how this career moves you by

helping to get others moving, to show our value as a profession in meeting the needs of society and to demonstrate our willingness to be part of the healthcare solution in New York All members are encouraged to attend. Public Policy committee and office staff will assist with pairing lobby day novices with experienced lobby day therapists. I implore you to come out, speak up and help make a difference in our profession. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

SLATE OF OFFICERS 2024 - 2026

QUESTION

In order to encourage all Chapter delegates’ involvement at the House of Delegates, what measures would you use to have all voices heard in the delegation to ensure diversity of thoughts and opinions?

STATEMENT:

The House of Delegates (HOD) is the body that makes decisions on issues that can imp the profession; therefore, it is very important to have a diverse voice. APTA New York’s policy is to have a representative delegation that is a combination of elected and appointed district delegates The first way to achieve a broad voice is through the elec of NYS delegates to the HOD. Elections occur at the APTA New York Delegate Assemb Therefore, I would encourage delegates to think about diversity when electing delega to the 2024 HOD.

Once APTA New York has their delegation set, then it is the Chief Delegate’s responsib to have all delegates participate in the conversations prior to and during the HOD. Often motions do not appeal to everyone. A diverse delegation will help ensure someone will have the knowledge and interest in each motion topic. Discussing general motion concepts first may assist in generating more conversation. Then individuals that are more passionate about specific motions can lead future conversations regarding wording of a specific motion. Over the years I have seen Robert’s Rules of Order confuse and/or intimidate delegates. Making sure everyone feels comfortable with the general concepts of Robert’s Rules may also assist in conversations during the HOD. Having the ability to communicate with the delegation at the HOD has been instrumental the past few years. I would continue to encourage a group conversation within APTA New York’s delegation during the House to ensure everyone felt comfortable with their decision to cast their vote.

QUESTION

Given the current economic volatility, what strategies would you recommend to ensure the fiscal stability of APTA New York?

STATEMENT:

The economic climate over the past few years has been turbulent to say the least Specifically, within the past three years, we have been able to withstand a significantly recessed market and fluctuating membership numbers by shifting resources to prioritized projects and managing the Chapter more efficiently. We have learned to use new tools for effective communication helping decrease the cost of doing business. If I continue in my role as Treasurer, I will work with the Finance and Executive Committees (EC) to improve efficiency and prioritize projects to increase membership by communicating and improving the value of an APTA New York membership.

Since we are a membership driven organization, the EC has started to work on new strategies for outreach We are working to effectively use social media and provide content to members This work has only begun, and I am excited at the thought of continuing this work over the next two years. In collaboration with our financial advisor, we developed an investment strategy that minimized losses and is starting to show returns through higher interest accounts and stable investments. We will continue to monitor the market trends and make investment decisions that support the financial goals of the Chapter and ensure long term growth and financial success.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve this great organization as Treasurer for the past two years. I can only hope to have the privilege to continue to serve you for the next two years.

QUESTION

What do you feel is the role of the Secretary serving on the Executive Committee of the APTA New York?

STATEMENT:

Having served as Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee over the last year, I have been able to see first-hand the role that each member of the Executive Committee has in leading our Chapter and working to continually move the profession forward. It is important that the Secretary, like all members of the Executive Committee, actively participate in discussions and decision making that impact the administrative functioning of the Chapter as well as the membership.

In addition, the Secretary is responsible to document and report on all meetings of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. The Secretary needs to be able to synthesize information gathered from these meetings to produce a timely and accurate report for the members.

These are skills that I have developed not only as interim Secretary for the Finger Lakes District, but also in my current role as Director of Rehab Services, where I have had to serve as scribe for incident command situations and other management meetings.

I have been honored to serve as Member-at-Large over the past year. This experience has reinforced my commitment to the Chapter and my interest in being Secretary. I am confident my skills, background and commitment the Chapter and its membership would be an asset to the Executive Committee. Thank you for considering me for the position of Secretary.

QUESTION

What Methods would you utilize to encourage members to run for open positions with the Chapter?

STATEMENT:

I am humbled to be nominated for the Nominating Committee of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) New York Chapter. I have been a member of the APTA New York Chapter for the best past 4 years, though I was a student member in years prior to this.

The methods I would use to encourage Chapter members to run for open positions have been informed and refined through ten years of clinical practice at NYU Rusk Rehabilitation and a year as an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at St. John’s University. Everyone in our profession is a stakeholder in the betterment of outcomes and processes sought after by the American Physical Therapy Association, and thus should be informed of the power of their individual voices within the collective objectives of the APTA New York Chapter. If elected to the Nominating Committee, I would strive to promote Chapter members to challenge themselves to increase the scope of their professional involvement, as well as identify solutions to barriers to running for open positions. Part of my method to achieve this goal is through consistent presence of voice and engagement with communities important to and involving our profession’s future.

LOBBY DAY: April 26th!

We invite you all to join fellow APTA New York Members on Wednesday, April 26 for a chance to make a difference in the profession!

Lobby Day gives members the opportunity to gather together in Albany to visit state senators and assembly members in their offices, in order to explain the importance of legislation impacting the physical therapy profession. For first time Lobby Day individuals, there are many seasoned members who are happy to introduce you to the process. Just ask how we can connect you with a mentor!

ADVOCACY WORKS! With your help, the non-opioid legislation that we supported last year was passed by both houses of the legislature and signed into law by the Governor. Physicians now must consider non-opioid alternative treatments for patients experiencing pain, including physical therapy, before prescribing an opioid for pain relief.

Continue to check out the APTA New York Lobby Day page for the most up-todate information on what legislature we are working for!

Please register by Tuesday, February 14th.
