Question

In order to encourage all Chapter delegates’ involvement at the House of Delegates, what measures would you use to have all voices heard in the delegation to ensure diversity of thoughts and opinions?

STATEMENT:

The House of Delegates (HOD) is the body that makes decisions on issues that can imp the profession; therefore, it is very important to have a diverse voice. APTA New York’s policy is to have a representative delegation that is a combination of elected and appointed district delegates The first way to achieve a broad voice is through the elec of NYS delegates to the HOD. Elections occur at the APTA New York Delegate Assemb Therefore, I would encourage delegates to think about diversity when electing delega to the 2024 HOD.

Once APTA New York has their delegation set, then it is the Chief Delegate’s responsib to have all delegates participate in the conversations prior to and during the HOD. Often motions do not appeal to everyone. A diverse delegation will help ensure someone will have the knowledge and interest in each motion topic. Discussing general motion concepts first may assist in generating more conversation. Then individuals that are more passionate about specific motions can lead future conversations regarding wording of a specific motion. Over the years I have seen Robert’s Rules of Order confuse and/or intimidate delegates. Making sure everyone feels comfortable with the general concepts of Robert’s Rules may also assist in conversations during the HOD. Having the ability to communicate with the delegation at the HOD has been instrumental the past few years. I would continue to encourage a group conversation within APTA New York’s delegation during the House to ensure everyone felt comfortable with their decision to cast their vote.

Question

Given the current economic volatility, what strategies would you recommend to ensure the fiscal stability of APTA New York?

STATEMENT:

The economic climate over the past few years has been turbulent to say the least Specifically, within the past three years, we have been able to withstand a significantly recessed market and fluctuating membership numbers by shifting resources to prioritized projects and managing the Chapter more efficiently. We have learned to use new tools for effective communication helping decrease the cost of doing business. If I continue in my role as Treasurer, I will work with the Finance and Executive Committees (EC) to improve efficiency and prioritize projects to increase membership by communicating and improving the value of an APTA New York membership.

Since we are a membership driven organization, the EC has started to work on new strategies for outreach We are working to effectively use social media and provide content to members This work has only begun, and I am excited at the thought of continuing this work over the next two years. In collaboration with our financial advisor, we developed an investment strategy that minimized losses and is starting to show returns through higher interest accounts and stable investments. We will continue to monitor the market trends and make investment decisions that support the financial goals of the Chapter and ensure long term growth and financial success.

It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve this great organization as Treasurer for the past two years. I can only hope to have the privilege to continue to serve you for the next two years.
