End of Year Exams at Eastlea Community School

Exam season has well and truly arrived at Eastlea Community School. Year 11s are busy with GCSEs and each child has been issued with an individual timetable. Students lower down the school are also doing End of Year exams and here are dates for each year group:
Year 7
● 14th May - English (1 hour)
● 22nd May - Maths (1 hour)
● 23rd May - Science (1 hour)
Year 8
● 4th June - English (1 hour)
● 11th June - Maths (1 hour)
● 17th June - Science (1 hour)
Year 9

At the end of year 9 our students complete GL assessments in English, Maths and Science and these assessments will take place during the week of 16th June - 20th June. These are nationally standardised tests and allow us to understand how your child is progressing since their arrival at the beginning of Year 7 and set them targets for their progress at GCSE.
Year 10
At the end of year 10 our students complete GCSE level exams in each of their subjects. These exams will take place between 23rd June and 4th July. These are standard exam papers which use GCSE grade boundaries to indicate the progress your child is making in their subjects. It also helps us to make decisions about their sets and entries for their GCSEs in year 11.

End of Year Exams at Eastlea Community School cont’d
Our teachers have been preparing your children for these assessments, and we will use Tutor Time to help them with additional revision support. These assessments are important to summarise key learning for the year and gain a deeper understanding of where your child’s strengths and areas for development are. All children have been informed of examination rules and expectations. These have also been placed onto their year group’s Google Classroom. Please ensure your child has a bottle of water and the necessary equipment to complete their assessments.
Our thanks for your continued support with your child’s learning and progress.
Here are some things that can help your child in the lead up to exams:
● Work with your child to find what revision style works for them.
● Encourage your child to take revision breaks and find a balance between studying and doing things they find enjoyable and relaxing.
● Make sure they are eating and drinking at regular intervals.
● Encourage them to take some time after revising to wind down.
● Reassure them – reinforce that you are and will be proud of them no matter what happens.
● Remain positive and hopeful!
● Plan a treat or an activity together to mark the end of the exams.
● Set aside one to one time so that they can talk to you about any worries.
● Let them know their feelings are valid and normal, but also offer support and solutions where possible.
● Anxiety is often worse at night and this means it is useful to encourage a good bedtime routine.
● Work with them to develop relaxation techniques.
● If anxiety and stress start impacting their day-to-day life, seek help from your GP.
