Morgan Podd Cover Contest Winner

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket www.neighbourmedia.ca

Since Morgan Podd was young she has always believed to see herself as a feminist, whether that was defying women's roles or advocating for women through her school work. As an honour roll student, active member of the Pickering College Student Committee, recipient of the Global Leadership Diploma with Distinction, and a member of Newmarket/Aurora Youth Council with Tony Van Bynen (MP), Morgan Podd began her search to help women in her community.

In her Grade 12 year, Morgan was selected as part of the first cohort to participate in the Impact Incubator, a stream of the Global Leadership Program that creates a seamless pathway for students to translate their innovative ideas into tangible solutions. Through hands-on projects, mentorship opportunities, and access to resources, students develop their entrepreneurial skills and bring their visions to life. During this incubator program, Morgan took the initiative to begin a feminine hygiene product donation drive at Pickering College to raise awareness around period poverty in Newmarket and Aurora. Approximately 150 boxes of panty liners, tampons, pads, and even menstrual cups were collected which in total was around 3,000 individual products.

After this Morgan built her website for MenstruCare (morganpodd22.wixsite.com/menstrucare) which aimed to reduce the effects of period poverty like deathly disease, feelings of embarrassment, shortage of products, and educating the community about periods. The website allows those part of the menstruating community to login to the MenstruCare website and find numerous locations offering free period products, whether through donations provided by Morgan or just in partnership with MenstruCare. After loads of community outreach, Morgan was able to partner with Rose of Sharon, Inn From The Cold, East Gwillimbury Food Pantry and Newmarket Food Pantry, to offer free products to those in need.

As Morgan approached summer, she continued to supply these locations with donations received from her drives and continues to seek help from those interested in raising awareness around menstruation. #GoodNeighbours

On May 26th, the Main Street Realty team was at the Riverwalk Commons for the Easter Seals Run. This run is a fundraising event organized by Easter Seals, a nonpro t organization that provides services to individuals with disabilities and special needs.

These runs are greatly needed by the organization, as the event participants raise money by running or walking a certain distance, and the funds raised go towards supporting Easter Seals programs and services, which can include things like therapy, education, employment support, and accessibility services.

The run raises crucial funds but also helps raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the importance of supporting them.

"The coaches are amazing, the workouts are challenging, and the studio staff is fantastic. I have been going to OFT for 6 years and still feeling challenged."

"There is a great team supporting members to achieve their personal goals, at their own pace. The environment is clean, organized and friendly team members working at the Newmarket location."

"I like the class format where you're given instructions, the variety is great, it doesn't feel like anyone is judging me and the instructors are very accommodating."

"The coaches are so enthusiastic and quick to correct anything I'm doing incorrectly. I like the way the classes are arranged and the many different focuses on the floor. It's a lot easier going at my pace instead of a class where you have to keep up with an instructor."

Riverwalk Wealth hosted its first ‘shred’ event in support of the Newmarket Food Pantry, and it was a huge success! The RW team was able to catch up with so many of their amazing clients while helping them safely dispose of their important papers/documents they no longer need, all while collecting 200 lbs of food and $300 in cash donations for the Newmarket Food Pantry.

On May 26th, the community gathered at Newmarket's Riverwalk Commons for the Easter Seals Ontario Central Region Walk, Run & Roll event. What an inspiring morning to see so many individuals supporting accessibility in our community. For over 47 years, the Upper Canada Easter Seals Run 5k & 10k Walk and Roll 5k have been a source of hope and support for children and youth with physical disabilities in York Region. Founded by Joe Persechini in 1976, this community event has raised nearly $3.5 million to improve the lives of Easter Seals kids and families, making it the longest-running fundraiser in the Region.

On June 16th, Neighbour Media's Myles Doak celebrated his 33rd birthday!

Pride filled the Market Brewing Co. taproom on June 3rd! Rebecca Gardiner and Joanne Sweers launched their 2024 NWMRKT Proud t-shirt campaign, where for each $20 donation you received a NWMRKT Proud t-shirt, with 100% of the funds donated to the Newmarket Food Pantry. In addition, Market Brewing created a speciality can for the campaign, and 25 cents from each purchase was donated to the cause. A HUGE Neighbour Media thank you to all of the sponsors that supported the 2024 #NWMRKTproud campaign and nourishing our neighbours.

MAYOR TAYLOR

Congrats on the New Home!

Congratulations to Neighbour Media on the opening of your new o ces!

The new space is as much a gathering and living space as it is a workspace, which is very fitting.

With a table that can seat a dozen, conversation nooks throughout, a podcast studio, and even a full kitchen and lounge area, this new home encourages people to drop by, stay a while and fosters collaboration for their team and their clients. It’s a fitting home for an organization called neighbour.

After all, being a good neighbour is as much about being welcoming and including people, as it is about being next door or down the street from one another. It’s about inviting people in and creating opportunities to get together. The space matches a publication that leverages an appetite for hyperlocal storytelling, to create an ongoing scrapbook full of local residents celebrating what's new and what's happening around the community. It’s a bright space, where of course yellow accents abound, that exudes a cheerfulness that echoes the smiling faces that fill the magazine’s pages.

The team at Neighbour Media has become so ubiquitous at events, that it's hard to believe this company is just two years old. In a changing media landscape, it’s great to see local media outlets, of all varieties, grow and flourish. Local media plays an important role in the life and health of communities, including ours. Local media encourages more participation in the community, greater civic engagement and it often tells stories that are more relevant to residents’ day-to-day lives.

The last few years have been tough ones to build any business, so congratulations to Lynnette, Elisa, Myles, and the rest of the team at Neighbour Media on two successful years and creating your new home, it suits you perfectly. See you around town … and now at the o ce!

Christian Baptist Church

The Christian Baptist Church on Main St. Newmarket, is one of the town’s most familiar landmarks. Originally, simply the “Christian Church”, it was the third structure built on the top of the Main St. hill, where “man could be close to God”. It had its own burial ground to the east of the church. The Christian Church congregation had American roots, and dates back to 1822 in the Newmarket area.

A local man, T.B. Wakefield, left $10,000 in his will for the construction of a new church (the 3rd and current structure). Mr. Wakefield had very specific wishes for the new structure and the church, completed in 1874, was built faithfully to his guidelines. His son-in-law, Brooks Howard, would donate another $4,000 for completing the interior and purchasing a pipe organ.

The church was designed by architect John T. Stokes of Sharon, who took the wishes of the Wakefield family and incorporated them into an imposing structure. Constructed in the revivalist style titled “First Point Gothic”, the contractor for the new church was Jacob Johnson.

The laying of the corner stone on June 25, 1874, was surrounded by much pomp and ceremony. Six triumphal evergreen arches were erected over Main St. as the town welcomed the Earl of Dufferin, Governor General, who performed the ceremony. The occasion also marked the first time the song “The Maple Leaf Forever” was sung as composer Alexander Muir brought his students down from his local public school to sing.

The photo pictured here appeared on a postcard around 1905. Made of locally-constructed buff bricks with red accent patterns. The steeple contains a 1200 lb. bell and built for the accommodation of a four-face clock (never installed).

The church became the Christian Baptist Church in 1949. Though many architectural changes throughout the years, the church remains a Newmarket landmark. Currently led by the spiritual guidance of Pastor Andrew Hamilton, the church survives as a testament to its architect and builder, the generosity of the Wakefield and Howard families and its caring congregations over the years.

Freddy

I'm Freddy! I was a local stray, running around with many people trying to catch me. Eventually I was secured and brought to a local Humane Society. I was extremely underweight and had very sore paws from running for so long. I was never claimed, so I was transferred to Dog Tales. In a short period of time, I have evolved greatly. I am very smart, extremely food motivated, strong and working on my leash manners. I have extreme fear with strangers, especially tall men, and require slow introductions to new people.

Ainsley

The Town of Aurora is restoring the historic pet cemetery, Happy Woodland Pet Cemetery.

Believed to be the first pet cemetery in Canada (1920's), the property on Yonge Street soon became a popular destination for people all over Canada to honour their deceased pets. In the late 1970s the property was sold, and for decades upkeep at the cemetery was neglected, and its rich history slowly became local lore. That all changed in 2011 when the Town acquired the property, and over the last few years, the Museum and Archives, with help from dedicated community members, archaeologists, and other technical experts, have been working to bring it back to life.

Hi! I'm Ainsley - you may have recently seen me at the Aurora Street Festival! I am a 4 month Bernedoodle. I was born from a litter of 11 pups and was the only one born with a limb deformitybut it doesn't stop me one bit from living life to the fullest! I LOVE my sister brie so much, and stealing clothes from the washer and dryer. I also love food - including ice cream, which is so yummy!

Oliver

Hi friends - I'm Oliver, but my mom and dad call me Ollie! I am a 3 year old Labrador Retriever Husky mix. I was adopted in April and am loving my new home and family! Things that I like include long walks, toys, treats, cuddles, and I am OBSESSED with playing with my ball. But I do not like any loud vehicles or noises such as sirens, streetcars, trucks, buses.

Rags

I'm Rags. I was rescued from a kill shelter and am looking for an active, experienced family that can give me lots of daily exercise and training. I can bite when guarding food or objects, so I will need an adult-only family who can work with the Dog Tales trainers to provide a smooth transition to my forever home. I would do best as the only pet in the home. My favourite things include getting pets from my favourite people, going for long walks on sunny days, and running around in the yard. I am treat-motivated and love to learn new things with a clicker.

Ren

Hello there! My name is REN (formally Little Shawn), and I’m a four-legged 9lb. furball of mischief and fun. I was a rescue, along with several of my friends, but thanks to all the incredibly kind people at Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, my parents found me, and I have been safe and happy for almost 8 years now! I highly recommend that you check out dogtales.ca, as you may also find your next true love - just like my parents did!

Milo

Hi, I’m Milo! I might be little, but I’m playful and a very good friend. My favourite toys to play with are 6 Big Ball golf balls, which I get to chase down the hall at home. I also love to play fetch... even if I never quite bring it back. I get to ride around in the basket on mom’s bike when we go to the trails, where I can run, run, run. I like barking at cats and squirrels, but also napping on warm laps. My favourite food is plain yogurt, and I do tricks for treats too. I also thoroughly enjoy back scratches, at any time of day, from my people!

Canada Day

Happy Canada Day! Let's celebrate our nation's freedom, rich heritage, and our shared commitment to inclusion and unity of our country.

On Friday, June 7, I hosted my first-ever Seniors Expo at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall. This event, held during Seniors Month, featured 20 local exhibitors, a complimentary tearoom, and three informative sessions on wellness, senior safety, and cyber security. It was wonderful to see our community come together to support and celebrate our seniors. A heartfelt thank you to all the exhibitors, speakers, and participants, as well as my amazing constituency staff and volunteers who helped make this event such a success.

June was also Pride Month, a time to honour all forms of love, diversity, and the courage to be yourself. As a lifelong advocate and ally, I want to express my support for our amazing LGBTQ+ community members.

Participating in the York Pride Parade with the Premier and many of my PC Caucus members provided a family experience with our community. The parade was full of love, support, family, acceptance, and joy. Thank you, York Pride, for helping so many feel comfortable being themselves, and congratulations on your parade’s 10th anniversary in Newmarket! Let's continue to be champions for love and equality every day.

It’s an honour to serve as your MPP for Newmarket—Aurora and to represent your voice at Queen’s Park. I look forward to continuing our journey in Building Our Community Together.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy hosted a Seniors Expo in honour of Seniors’ Month at the Lions Community Centre in Newmarket, on June 7th. This year’s expo featured 20 local exhibitors, a complimentary tearoom, and 3 information sessions on wellness, safety, and cyber security. It was a wonderful morning filled with learning, refreshments, and socialization.

On May 31st, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy had the opportunity to meet with representatives at CAYR Community Connections to hear how things are progressing as a result of receiving a $200,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) earlier this year. The two-year-long grant will help CAYR to build resilience and sustainability through 2SLGBTQ+ post-pandemic needs assessment and diverse programming.

A Message From MP Tony Van Bynen

Canada is my home. The Netherlands is my birthplace. I am an immigrant. Proud of where I was born, proud to be a Canadian.

I did not take the journey to citizenship lightly. I believe I have a responsibility to ensure future generations have equal opportunities to advance in life. My journey as a politician is predicated on a simple belief that each generation should provide a better outcome for the generation that follows. I believe in dignity, opportunity, and inclusion. I was taught the values of hard work and the importance of community. And I learned early on how charity can impact one's life.

Our government’s programs supporting families, seniors and students and our commitment to the green economy are policies reflecting the dynamics of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. From mining critical minerals, to building batteries, cars, buses, and charging stations, Canadian workers are attracting investment and creating even better jobs and careers. We have invested heavily in the technology of the future and are positioning ourselves to be leaders in the emerging green economy These incentives will help Canadian businesses grow, create good, middle-class jobs, and help our communities prosper.

Our path to greatness as a nation must be one built on inclusion, equity, and equality for all, with respect for our differences. I see a country willing to address the tragic relationships with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people. I see a country that recognizes the future will be defined by the strength of our ethnic diversity, our compassion, and our collective imagination.

Happy Canada Day

Amica Senior Lifestyles: Residences Designed With Safety In Mind

At Amica, seniors are at the centre of everything we do. Each of our residences is thoughtfully designed with safety as the top priority.

Whether seniors are living in a communal residence or at home, it’s important to learn about potential hazards and how to prevent injuries and falls first; many falls lead to senior hospitalization and further injury. Below are some essential safety tips for seniors:

• Increase visibility: We need more light to see as we get older, so it’s important to install senior-friendly light fixtures that provide the right amount of illumination. Night lights with motion sensors that turn on when it’s dark also prevent and reduce the risk of falls.

• Check handrails regularly to ensure they are properly fixed, comfortable to touch and continuous.

• Reduce glare: Seniors’ eyes are more sensitive to bright lights and glare, so avoid highly reflective finishes and use blinds or curtains on windows with direct sunlight.

• Choose non-slip flooring: Replace area rugs and other trip hazards with non-slip flooring. Installing easy-to-clean carpet can reduce the risk of fall-related hip fractures.

• Install well-anchored grab bars and non-slip flooring in the bathroom and replace bathtubs with accessible showers.

• Ensure that electrical work and appliances are up to code and keep space heaters away from flammable materials.

• Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each level of a home and install a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

• Keep a first aid kit in the kitchen or bathroom

Get out this summer and experience everything Aurora has to offer!

Did you know that Aurora is consistently included in the lists of top places to live in our country? Our growing community has just the right mix of small-town charm and big city sophistication, with excellent restaurants, amenities and tons of greenspace. Am I #AuroraProud? You bet! And I hope that you are too.

As I think about what else makes our Town so great, I always circle back to our community. Residents come together to volunteer, participate in sports, use our parks and trails and enjoy special events. This sense of community is especially palpable in the summer months, and I invite you to get out and experience it.

Have you been out to any Town events yet this summer? There are lots of exciting things to do this month and next, including our Concerts in the Park series which continues with a great lineup of bands performing in Town Park every Wednesday through to the end of August. For the full concert line, visit: aurora.ca/SummerConcerts.

Our Movies in the Park series also begins in early August. Bring your popcorn, lawn chair and a blanket, and enjoy a movie under the stars. This family friendly event is a community favourite, so be sure to arrive early. There will be pre-movie games, crafts and activities and the movie begins at dusk. For more information, visit aurora.ca/MoviesInThePark.

And if food is your passion, you won’t want to miss the tastiest event of the year taking place at Machell Park. A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Dear Neighbours,

As we gather to celebrate Canada Day, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the privilege of representing our vibrant and diverse riding as your Member of Parliament. This day, which marks the birth of Canada, offers us an opportunity to reflect on what our nation truly means to each of us. I encourage everyone to reflect on and celebrate our beautiful country that the Indigenous people of Turtle Island share with us all.

Canada is more than a country; it is a shared dream and a collective journey towards a brighter future. For many, Canada represents hope and the promise of a better life, a land where freedom, equality, and opportunity are the cornerstones of our society. It is a place where diversity is celebrated, where many cultures, languages, and traditions come together to create a rich tapestry that is uniquely Canadian.

Our community of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill exemplifies the very best of what it means to be Canadian. We are made up of caring, and engaged citizens who look out for one another and work together to build a better future for all. From our community organizations and schools to our vibrant cultural festivals and local events, we demonstrate daily what it means to live in a place that values inclusivity, compassion, and resilience.

Over the past year, our government has worked tirelessly to uphold these values and the rights and freedoms we all hold dear. Our Charter-protected rights ensure that Canada remains one of the freest countries on earth.

This Canada Day, I encourage you to take part in the festivities, reflect on what Canada means to you, and share your stories and experiences. Together, we will continue to build a Canada that is inclusive, prosperous, and strong.

Happy Canada Day! Bonne fête du Canada!

A Message from Michael Parsa

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the beautiful weather that Ontario is blessed with at this time of year. It was wonderful to see so many of you a few weeks ago at our community BBQ to commemorate Ontario Day. The event was a tremendous success, thanks to your support. This community gathering was a testament to the strength of our community spirit and the joy we share in coming together to celebrate. From the delicious food to the lively music and games, it was a day filled with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

Canada Day is just around the corner, and the Town of Aurora has planned an exciting parade to mark this special occasion. The parade will feature marching bands like the Governor Generals Horse Guards and cultural performances that represent the diversity of our nation. This momentous day offers a perfect opportunity for neighbours to gather and celebrate our shared values. By coming together, we not only celebrate Canada but also strengthen the bonds that unites us.

On May 25th, MPP Michael Parsa stopped by Hope House Community Hospice to celebrate their receipt of an Ontario government grant funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Awarded in 2023, the funding has helped Hope House to enhance accessibility to programs through the procurement of new and enhanced equipment and technology. Hope House Community Hospice’s Executive Director, Heidi Bonner discussed the importance of the grant for the organization and the work being done. In addition to MPP Michael Parsa stopping in, Hope House also held their volunteer appreciation day which included planting succulents and lunch.

I encourage you all to come out and participate in the Canada Day Parade. So, bring your flags, wear red and white, and show your Canadian pride. Let’s make this year’s parade a great display of our community.

Enjoy the warm weather, take advantage of the many outdoor activities our region offers, and stay safe. I look forward to seeing you at the parade and other upcoming events this summer!

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

We’d like to shout out to our July Champion of the Month, Newmarket Toyota! It’s always a joy to work with wonderful people and that goes for Ruby Lui-Lina and Rachel Hawtin from Newmarket Toyota as they have supported Abuse Hurts over the last couple of years. Not only have they contributed with financial support and sponsorship, which we always greatly appreciate, but they have been very ‘hands-on’ with their involvement at our events and other initiatives.

We are so encouraged when sponsors get excited about what we are doing and show genuine interest in how they can participate!

Newmarket Toyota has been a major sponsor for our fashion shows and General Manager, Ruby Lui-Lina even participated as a model.

Abuse Hurts President, Helena Kameka, recalls her initial meeting with Ruby and Rachel at the Charity’s o ces, “When Ruby asked, ‘how can we help?’, I knew she was truly interested in what the Charity needed instead of coming with a pre-determined suggestion of what they were willing to do. Together, we have been able to develop a wonderful relationship and we are so impressed by their desire to give back to the community by helping survivors of abuse get a great start in overcoming and thriving despite what they’ve been through”.

Thank you, Ruby, Rachel and staff at Newmarket Toyota for extending their care, concern, and practical help in the lives of so many people that we serve in the community! Your positive impact helps keep hope alive.

The 2nd annual A Million Mouthfuls Catering For A Cause Powered by Neighbour Media happened on May 26th at Newmarket's Old Town Hall! It was an evening of live music from Dave Toms, food, fun and dishing out money to 3 local charities! This year the top 3 charities, as voted by the community, were Community & Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS), Hope House Community Hospice, and Newmarket Food Pantry. The event raised over $17,000, and CHATS, who received the majority of the votes that evening were awarded $10,000! The remaining $7,000+ was split between Hope House and the Newmarket Food Pantry. Everyone went home a winner! Thank you to our friend and amazing Emcee Steve Hinder, and a special shoutout to all of our sponsors; Juliane Goyette (Riverwalk Wealth), Main Street Realty, Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, Magna International, NewRoads Automotive Group, Taylor Toms & Tammy Longfield, Flow Alkaline Spring Water, Old Flame Brewing Co., Best Seat In The House Inc., Good Vibes on Main, Flossy's Flower Truck, MR Menswear, The Chris Cartwright Team, The Big Ball Golf Company, Royal Rose Gallery, Leslie Hobson, The Tickled Toad, Upper Canada Mall, Amica Senior Lifestyles, Glenn Rodger Photography, Isaac & A Million Mouthfuls.

For 27 years, the Aurora Street Festival has launched us into the summer season. Thousands of people and pets filled Yonge Street, from Wellington Street to Edward Street, to enjoy food, music, shopping, and to discover Aurora's amazing downtown core! Congratulations Aurora Chamber of Commerce on another AMAZING Festival.

At a recent event, Neighbour Media’s Lynnette was approached by Barbara Barker, 2nd Aurora Scouting Group Beaver Leader, who shared how much she thoroughly enjoys reading the Neighbour Paper. Each month, Barb takes the time to photocopy the puzzle from the “For Our Neighbours” page and distributes it to the Beavers as one of their monthly assignments. She expressed her appreciation for the engaging and educational content, which not only entertains the young Scouts but also provides them with valuable learning experiences. This interaction highlighted the positive impact that the Neighbour Paper has on the community and demonstrated how our efforts help support local groups and activities.

I started fostering kittens during the pandemic to bring joy into our lives during a lonely time and to make a meaningful difference. I connected with Georgina Feral Cats (GFCC), a dedicated non-profit rescue group serving Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, and the surrounding areas. GFCC specializes in trap-neuter-release (TNR) for feral adult cats and brings kittens into foster care for medical treatment and adoption, breaking the cycle of more and more kittens born outside with little chance of a safe life. My partner and I foster two litters annually, typically consisting of 3-6 kittens each. They join us at 7-8 weeks old and stay until they’re spayed/neutered and adopted at 12-13 weeks, bringing immense joy to our home during their stay. People often ask if it’s hard to let them go, but knowing they’re going to loving homes and that there are always more kittens that need us, makes it easier. If you’re interested in supporting these efforts through donations, adoption, or fostering yourself, please visit georginaferals.ca for more information. Your involvement can make a significant impact on these sweet babies’ lives. - Loralea Carruthers
