DOMINION SEPTIC: A TRUSTED LEADER IN SEPTIC SYSTEM SOLUTIONS

For more than 18 years, David Stewart has been a trusted resource for septic system needs throughout the Fredericksburg area. His expertise in designing and inspecting these critical aspects of everyday life has been a huge asset to the community he serves. From his background in working for local government and consulting to now running successful businesses, David understands what it takes to deliver exceptional work you can rely on.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Soil Science from Virginia Tech, his first job out of college was with Fauquier County as a Soil Technician. Just one year later, he was promoted to Assistant County Soil Scientist. Over the next few years, David focused on soil surveys, soil maps for development and agriculture, and became an expert consultant for the local health department when it came to matters of alternative sewage disposal needs. Although David left the county for a few years in the early 2000s to pursue a private soil consulting job, he later returned to take on the role of the County Soil Scientist. Through his work for Fauquier County, and as a part-time consultant during his free time, David continued to search for ways to improve the lives of others with his wealth of knowledge.

David established Dominion Septic, Inc. in 2006 and is currently the President of that corporation. The work Dominion Septic provides gives customers reassurance that this important system in your home or business will continue to operate the way it should. With thorough inspections, maintenance by trained professionals, and timely repairs when needed, David leads a team of experts who truly care about the work they provide customers. By overseeing the work of other contractors, Dominion Septic is able to implement the very best techniques and strategies that can help owners avoid expensive problems down the road.

Integrity is the top priority for David and the Dominion Septic team. Not only do they believe in transparency and quality craftsmanship, but they are also committed to staying active within the industry. David has even served on the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation board that developed the questions for septic designers, septic operators, and septic installer’s licensure across the state of Virginia. Dominion Septic is a premium septic service provider that sincerely has the customer’s best interests at heart. From raising his family in the Fredericksburg Area, to spending his free time hunting and fishing locally, David is dedicated to his community; and it shows in his work. If you’re in need of a septic service provider you can count on, call David and the team at Dominion Septic to get the job done right.

A Beacon of Style and Motherhood Kim Hicks:

In the heart of Fredericksburg resides a woman named Kim Hicks, affectionately known as “Miss Kim,” who embodies the essence of Southern hospitality, resilience, and timeless elegance. With a legacy steeped in love and community, Kim’s grace, style, and devotion to family illuminate the lives of everyone around her.

Born and raised in Savannah, Kim’s childhood was imbued with the warmth of her tight-knit family and the rich cultural heritage of her Southern roots. Her journey took a new turn when she met her beloved husband, Bennie, and together, they embarked on a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising five children. From Newport News to Fredericksburg, Kim’s dedication to her family knew no bounds as she gracefully embraced the roles of homemaker, nurturer, and matriarch.

“I was a homemaker for most of my life, and once my kids were grown, I helped to raise grandkids and some great-grandkids,” Kim said. Even the neighborhood kids always felt at home with “Miss Kim.”

“The neighborhood kids felt comfortable talking to me. Some of the kids from that time still call and talk or visit me even though they are not as close to my kids anymore,” she explained. “I loved having children around.”

While Kim admits her younger days were “a time when men preferred their wives to work at home,” she occasionally would get a job outside of it.

“I’ve worked in a convenience store, as a dry cleaner, as a seamstress, and as security,” she said. But her most memorable job?

“That was at the hospital across the street from our home, where three of our children were born,” Kim explained. “My husband, Bennie, was a carpenter, and he could build anything. Occasionally, I would go with him to work: holding this, cutting that, nailing this. He would take the kids, too, though none of them really wanted to go,” she laughed.

“Once, he worked for a doctor in the hospital across the street. I went with him to her home to work, and she offered me a job at the hospital. I don’t think she felt I should be doing carpentry work, so I went to work at the hospital as a gopher,” she explained.

“She was a carpenter’s wife who often worked alongside her husband,” her son Kendall explained. “She learned a thing or two and used her painting and design skills to dress up and accentuate the home.”

It isn’t hard to tell that Kim enjoys serving others and dressing up at home, but something she enjoys most for herself is simply “dressing up!”

“When you get up and get dressed in the mornings, you just look and feel better,” Kim said.

Kim’s flair for fashion is legendary, transcending generations and inspiring all who cross her path. From her early days in Savannah, where she learned to sew and create her own clothes, to her adventures in New York City and beyond, Kim’s eye for style is unparalleled. Whether she’s perusing the aisles of high-end boutiques or hunting for treasures at local thrift stores, Kim’s fashion journey is a testament to her creativity, resourcefulness, and unwavering self-expression.

“She learned to sew and make the clothes she could not afford,” explained her daughter Keasha. “As her children grew, she found it economical to make their clothing using an old Singer sewing machine and Simplicity patterns.” Kim, Bennie, and their children were never out of fashion. To this day, her children maintain the fashion habits Kim and Bennie instilled in them.

“Every 4th of July, we take a themed photograph to commemorate Mom’s birthday, honoring fashion and family,” said Keasha.

“Being a fashion maven, she is a professional shopper and does not discriminate in her patronage,” her son, Benjamin, explained. “She is as comfortable and willing to ‘spread the wealth’ at a high-end establishment or boutique or via a shopping television network as she is in a Goodwill, a Salvation Army, or a garage or yard sale.”

When she’s not shopping or traveling, Miss Kim can be found watching reruns of The Golden Girls. “She’s an avid fan of Blanche,” her son, Benjamin, explained, and she also is a fan of the incomparable designer Iris Apfel. “Thus, her affinity for comfortable, flowing, multi-patterned eclectic prints, distinctive eyewear, and bold jewelry.” All of the Hicks children come by the “fashion bug,” honestly, Ben went on to explain.

“My father dressed to impress on social outings, and so did my mother. Though money was tight, they still found ways to remain dapper, including my mother’s sewing (I remember many Simplicity patterns around the house) and thrifting– we all love it,” Benjamin said.

“My mother’s style, demeanor, youthful exuberance, and forward fashion sense has allowed her to evolve into the queen-ager she was always meant to be.”

Beyond her fashion prowess, Kim’s heart shines brightest in her role as a devoted mother and grandmother. Still, she also finds joy in life’s simple pleasures, from leisurely walks to the mailbox to attending church and spending quality time with family and friends. Her eclectic interests and love for travel have taken her from the bustling streets of New York City to the shores of Savannah, where she revels in the beauty of each moment and the richness of life’s experiences. Kim currently lives with her daughter and son-in-law, Yvette and Peter Blake, but she often visits her other children across the country.

“I like to visit my other children when I go on vacation,” said Kim. Miss Kim’s children live in Oklahoma, New York, and Georgia, and she relishes the opportunity to travel despite her preference for a bus over a plane.

“The furthest I’ve been is Mexico and Panama, but I hope to visit Paris at some point,” she explained. When she isn’t traveling, she attends local events, volunteers at polling stations, or simply shares a smile with her neighbors.

“She supports me in my ventures of living history, book club events, and whatever else,” Yvette explained. “She helps by sewing, preparing for events, and entertaining.” Keeping busy is just what Miss Kim does. She loves the Fredericksburg area and all of the local events.

“If you’re bored around here, then something is wrong with you,” said Benjamin. “Our mother enjoys the diversity of things to do in the area, from the rural areas to the more modern spaces.”

“Shopping and eating out are her favorite things to do here,” explained Keasha. “She thinks it is our responsibility to contribute to the local economy and is so very proud that she does her part to help it thrive.” At 86, Miss Kim

is undoubtedly thriving, as are all those around her; Kim’s presence enriches the lives of all who have the pleasure of knowing her.

From her childhood in Savannah to her golden years in Fredericksburg, Kim’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and timeless elegance.

“When I die, there will be no clothes with price tags on them in my closet,” Kim laughed. “I’m wearing it all!”

As she continues to inspire those around her with her grace and style, Kim Hicks remains not just a fashion maven but a shining example of the power of family, community, and the pursuit of one’s passions.

SPRING

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

Nothing says “Spring” like cherry blossoms and a dust mop. Spring cleaning is as much a home improvement as a new deck or floor. It is essential. Many get lost in the enormity of the task. Keep it simple and break it down into doable steps. Plan a spring-cleaning schedule to accomplish your goals for the next days or weeks. Include family members in tasks and make it a goal!

Inside out. Decide to begin with the indoor cleaning first. This is where we spend the majority of our time. An organized, sanitary space allows for peace and tranquility. Clear out items that no longer are of use. Assess an item to determine if it brings joy and is used often. Clear out closets, drawers, storage rooms, and cluttered spaces. Even if you accomplish cleaning one item a day, that is progress! Children can go through toys and make piles to give away. Teens can sort through clothes, books, and collections, wipe out cabinets, clean windows, and share in tasks. Work through each room, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and garage. Outside, pressure wash siding and decks and do simple landscaping. A little goes a long way for curb appeal.

Top to bottom. When cleaning indoors, think of cleaning from a high-to-low, top-to-bottom approach. Dust lighting and light fixtures, wipe crown molding, clean windows, wash walls, dust, and polish furniture, clean upholstered furniture, vacuum carpets, and area rugs, wash hard surface flooring, and wipe baseboards. Be sure to use the correct cleaning products to clean effectively without causing damage to surfaces. Encore by COREtec is a safe solution for a luxury vinyl plank available at NK Floors. The neutral pH removes dirt and grime and is compatible with hard surfaces, including hardwood, ceramic, laminate, and resilient floors.

Maintenance. After the time and work invested, maintain it! Following the timeless saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” will help keep your living space clean. Design a duties list for you, your partner, or the family. Share tasks and make it fun. If your profession keeps you busy, enlist help to keep the house tidy. Hire a cleaning service for a monthly deep clean or even a weekly or biweekly clean. It will be money well spent while buying time with those you care about the most. Spring cleaning is refreshing! When consistently maintained, it is a game-changer.

BRILLIANT MINDS UNVEILED:

A SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS’ COMMONWEALTH GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL CULMINATING

PROJECTS

Julia Pesnell is a junior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.

The Commonwealth Governor’s School aims to bring students’ passions to life and promote the growth of intelligent thinkers. These students thrive in an environment where critical thinking is encouraged, and knowledge is appreciated. A fundamental aspect of this program is an extensive research project known as “culminating.” Culminating not only significantly equips each student with adequate research skills that would not typically have been encountered until college, but it also helps each student dive into their passion and become an expert on their topic.

Freshman Year

To begin freshman year, each student chooses a topic of research to pursue. They learn the basics of scholarly research and eventually compile the sources they’ve gathered to write a literature review and create a presentation for the class about their findings.

Current freshman Cora Shields’ research topic was inspired by her personal experience. Her research question is, “Does gadolinium contrast used for MRIs pose a significant threat to patient health?”

Shields recounts her experience, where a doctor informed her and her mother of the long-lasting negative effects of gadolinium, but in a subsequent visit, “...the doctor had forgotten all about it. He said, ‘Oh, no, gadolinium is perfectly safe.’”

Shields explains how this situation inspired her passion for the topic, saying, “This made me nervous about gadolinium and distrustful of doctors… So I wanted to research it.”

Shields details the knowledge she has gained about the topic and how federal agencies, the government, and doctors simply try to dismiss the patient dissatisfaction and harm that is occurring as a result of such exposure. Shields comments on her research, saying, “Doctors are required to talk about risks associated with gadolinium, but they don’t. Most people are completely unaware that a toxic and potentially dangerous metal is being injected into them when they get an MRI.”

Sophomore Year

Sophomore students continue to expand on their research from the prior year and shape their research questions to incorporate the creation of a product. The prod -

uct doesn’t have to be something physical; it can be anything that hones in on the research the student conducted freshman year.

Sophomore Deven Jani focused on his curiosity about the significance of differing diets. Jani asks, “How can the consumption of plant-based foods versus animal-based foods impact environmental and personal health?”

Jani says, “I am astonished by the true extent of the difference in environmental impact between animal-based and plant-based diets. I did not understand the true discrepancy in land/water usage or the impact of the greenhouse gas effect on the environment.”

For his product, Jani is creating an app where users input their age, gender, and desired diet and meal. The app will list the meal’s nutritional value, compare the equivalent meals from the plant-based and animal-based diets, and finally, “show the user how the diet impacts the user’s personal health and environmental health.”

Junior Year

Juniors continue to grow the sophistication of their research skills as they choose a new topic that will fill their next two years. They begin to incorporate the citations of APA, Chicago, and MLA, respectively, and master their organization of scholarly sources in their final literature review.

Luke Wellerman, a current junior and professional photographer, focused his research on a technique that could improve his work. His question is, “How can new artificial intelligence technologies be incorporated into photography without violating the industry’s ethical standards?”

Wellerman comments on the relevance of his research, saying, “...AI will continue to be implemented in many different ways, and it is best to implement AI into our lives to optimize many different aspects.”

Wellerman says, “This year, I feel that the process is more refined and targeted at specific, higher-level materials due to the knowledge that we have built up over the past two years.” He goes on to highlight the teachers’ guidance, saying, “All of our teachers are really good about giving strong feedback that allows us to make improvements to our creations… It really helps to have someone who looks over our work and gives constructive feedback so we can learn and improve.”

Senior Year

Senior year concludes the research process as students team up with an expert to perfect their product and literature review that they began designing junior year. They conclude the year with a senior symposium that brings all CGS schools together to show off their hard work.

Inspired by her pandemic-born hobby of binging legal dramas, senior Grace Camp crafted her research question, “How can one use social media to best publicize and educate about local environmental impacts?”

After watching “Dark Waters,” a documentary about an environmental lawyer who exposes a company that is knowingly contaminating drinking water and connects that scenario to Flint, Michigan, Camp becomes aware of just how large a role media plays in raising awareness of such topics. She says, “It was shocking that this was something that actually happened, and nobody knew about it until a movie was made.”

Camp teamed up with expert Dr. Sharaya Jones, a professor at GMU with a degree in marketing and communications. Jones helped Camp purposely design an Instagram account as her final product to raise awareness for Fredericksburg’s environment. Camp says, “She’s helped me find ways to use specific colors in my advertising, and she even followed my account!”

Camp concludes, “Currently, I have reached 3,000 accounts and have roughly 130 followers. I activated this account two weeks ago, so it feels pretty exciting it’s taken off this fast already!”

FROM FANTASY TO REALITY:

INSIDE THE WORLD OF DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS AT RHS

Dungeons and Dragons is a fictional role-playing game created in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules Inc. Players form an “adventuring party” and embark on fictional quests in fantasy worlds. The game has no winner but does have various roles and levels a player can fall into, including the referee, such as the Dungeon Master.

As the game popularly interests many of the students at Riverbend, it is only fitting that a club has been created to fulfill this passion. Having been around for several years, the club has seen many faces and started many strong friendships. With a consistent attendance of around 40 students at each meeting, delight in and commitment to the club can be clearly recognized. Some students of the DND club are not involved in any other extracurriculars, and this club gives them a place to engage with others with similar interests. Other students are involved in several other extracurriculars, but the DND club allows them to be involved in a slightly different type of activity.

Jennifer Price, the DND club advisor for two years, says, “I love watching the students engage in cooperative storytelling and problem-solving.”

The club is open to any student, whether a beginner or avid DND player, who simply wants to grow their interest in the game. RHS sophomore and DND club treasurer Mia “Mo” Seitz says, “The club is very welcoming of newcomers; if you just want to go, you just need to sign up or email the sponsors.” Price says, “We’ve had students without experience walk in and just start playing. Everyone helps the beginner.”

The students form different, smaller groups who work together to partake in various adventure crusades, known as campaigns, exploring dis -

tinct aspects of the fantasy world, from minions to haunted mansions.

Additionally, the club members sometimes meet on the weekends for parties and “weekend oneshots,” where the members can further connect and delve into the game as they spend several hours venturing through a single campaign. A significant positive aspect of the club is the community it creates and the friendships it causes to flourish. Club vice president and threeyear member Katherine “Kate” Hurley says, “I’ve made a couple of friends here, and I’m sure other members have as well.” She goes on to say, “I wouldn’t have an opportunity to play D&D without it,” furthering the importance of the club’s aspect of giving students access to different activities than they may normally be exposed to.

Seitz comments on her experiences with the club’s community: “In my personal experience, I’ve met people I wouldn’t have usually met on regular terms.”

The club has also helped many of its members in additional areas of their education and school life, as some teachers have particularly noticed specific improved skills. Price says, “I’ve seen the confidence level and leadership skills really grow… Members also reflect the school’s neurodiverse population, and I have had some teachers tell me of the impact and growth in the classrooms, especially in writing and narrative skills.” Though this club focuses on a non-academic game, it still provides many benefits in the members’ social and school lives.

Price culminates in saying, “It can take a while to find a group to gel with, but then those groups stick together… They are creating a shared experience and history.”

Inspiration for the Class of ‘24

It’s that time when teachers, parents, and students anticipate the close of another school year. For some of us, it marks the commencement of a new era. It is a time for celebrating the accomplishments and future dreams of our seniors. As a mom of nine, with two of my own children graduating, I wish to share some inspiration with our dear graduates.

1. You are valued and loved. You are a unique masterpiece. You are accepted and loved unconditionally. Someone just like you has never been and never will be.

2. You have a purpose. You were placed here for such a time as this.

3. Do the next thing. The next few years are stepping stones. There is no need to have your entire life figured out. Invest in yourself physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Develop your abilities, grow in weaknesses, and fine-tune your strengths.

4. Serve others. There is nothing more fulfilling in life than making a difference in another person’s life. You could be the answer to someone’s need. Use your time, gifts, and talents to bless others. Give expecting nothing in return. Invest eternally. Giving is the reward.

5. Learn from mistakes. Allow your mistakes and the mistakes of others to make you better, not bitter. Wisdom is born out of failure, and failure is not your final destination. Get up, adapt, and try again.

6. Life is a vapor; make it count. Life is not a one-track raceway. It is like a garden in which we live by the principle of sowing and reaping. What seeds will you plant in the next year, five years, or ten years? And what do you hope to reap from the seeds planted? How do you plan on nurturing the garden of your life? Do you have a supportive community to help you reap the garden you envision? Allow wisdom and sound counsel to help guide you in this process. EMPOWERING THROUGH MUSIC AND ART: THE BILL CARROLL FOUNDATION

In the heart of Fredericksburg, the Bill Carroll Foundation shines brightly as a beacon of hope, inclusion, and creativity. Founded by CEO and visionary Bill Carroll, this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is dedicated to providing inclusive arts programs and instruction to individuals of all abilities, focusing on veterans and those with disabilities.

“Our philosophy is to guide more people to experience the arts and celebrate music and its education in communities across our country, starting in our own backyard,” Bill explained. Through advocacy and community outreach, the foundation also strives to support schools and organizations in promoting the importance of arts education.

A Fusion of Passion and Purpose

For Bill Carroll, music and education have always been intertwined. With a background in the music and production industry and his experience as a counselor for individuals with special needs, Bill recognized the transformative power of the arts in enriching lives and building communities.

“I come from a line of regular and special needs teachers in my immediate and extended families,” Bill shared. “Then I, too, got certified as a counselor for Special Needs people and even worked in a group home for a few years. Then, becoming a professional Audiovisual Engineer and teacher, these two worlds collided when I realized I needed to put them together somehow.”

“I’ve been in the music and production industry most of my life,” Bill said. “Then, just five years ago, I created my Foundation, which literally brought these two worlds together, and to me, it seemed a no-brainer.”

Empowering Through Inspiration

The driving force behind Bill’s dedication to the foundation lies in the moments of inspiration he witnesses firsthand.

“My biggest inspiration is when I experience seeing someone with special needs pick up an instrument and then start playing it like they were practicing for years,” Bill shared. “This inspires me to not only help and guide them to greater, more refined skills with their amazing talent but makes me more humble in everything I do.”

Bill’s journey with music is something he’s always envisioned, literally.

“I once told one of my teachers that I ‘see’ sounds in colors,” he recalls. To this day, while I’m in a recording studio working on a sound project, seeing those sounds, I can effectively edit and manipulate the audio without even continuing to use my ears to edit intently but by seeing the colors and looking at the waveform of audio.”

Spreading Joy Through Innovation

As the Bill Carroll Foundation continues to expand its reach, Bill is excited to unveil the IMERS project (“Immersive Mobile Educational Recording Studio”) for Musicians with Disabilities.

“It’s time to share it with the world,” Bill declared. “The neighboring counties’ school systems have contacted me, and we’re working on having them utilize my mobile classroom/studio for the Special Needs students of each and every school that needs it.”

The impact of the foundation extends far beyond the realm of arts education, touching the lives of individuals in profound ways. Bill shared the story of a young man with autism who discovered his musical genius through the foundation’s programs, culminating in a full-blown musical production that showcased his talent and creativity:

“There was this 24-year-old boy with autism who was musically and naturally a genius at it, in my opinion,” Bill said. “He was involved with Step-VA, a local theatrical organization that puts on productions of all sizes specifically for kids with disabilities.” Through mentorship and support, this young man showcased his musical talents and gained confidence and independence, inspiring everyone around him. Looking to the Future with Hope

As the Bill Carroll Foundation embarks on its next chapter of growth and service, it invites the community to support its mission.

“With the completion of our IMERS project, we’re now able to advocate not only for individuals with disabilities but also for the schools offering tools and resources that validate the importance of music in our schools,” Bill emphasized.

For Bill Carroll, the journey is far from over. Despite facing life-long disabilities and health issues, he remains unwavering in his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

“The programs we offer, the professional services, and the Mobile Unit are for hire for anyone who needs its services and functions for their event or show. It’s fully capable of recording audio from ANY source, whether a full-blown concert or another kind of event,” Bill explained.

“We can use the studio for multi-camera operations with video production. It’s a master editing suite for audio and video. There’s going to be Virtual Reality inside it. It’s a classroom. It’s a recording studio for any musician to practically play and record any instrument. There’s so much that this mobile unit is capable of, and then all of our professional services that go along with it.”

Making Music Together

In addition, Bill started a record label attached to the foundation for all of their musicians called the Groove Factory. “We’re a full-functioning Audiovisual Production Company utilizing technicians, admin, and musicians with any sort of disability. We

consistently need Volunteers and people to help with everything we do and to mentor and teach.”

Bill said if anyone wants their services at an event, “Just ask! We’d love to help create an amazing time for your guests, possibly show off our mobile studio, and have people experience it a bit. It really is epic!”

Through his foundation, Bill Carroll has created a legacy of empowerment, inspiring individuals to embrace their passions, overcome challenges, and unleash their full potential. As the foundation continues to flourish, it is a testament to the enduring power of music, art, and compassion to transform lives and uplift communities.

“Together,” Bill said, “Let us create a world where every voice is heard, and every talent is celebrated.”

The Kid’s Ultimate Guide to Mother’s Day

Spring has officially sprung, and along with the blossoming flowers and warmer weather, Mother’s Day is now upon us. One of the first Mother’s Day celebrations was celebrated in Ancient Greece thousands of years ago. The United States has now adopted and molded the celebratory tradition into American culture, celebrating Mother’s Day annually on the second Sunday of May.

As a kid who is most grateful to their mother figures, it can sometimes be hard to come up with the “perfect gift.” But one thing is certain: the gifts mothers love the most come straight from their loved ones’ hearts.

Crafty Creations

Whether making a creative card that expresses your immense gratitude or creating another medium of art, this craft will undoubtedly be a valuable keepsake for your mother for years.

A fun way to start is with handprint art! You can trace your hand into a drawn bouquet or stamp your hand onto paper with the paint of your mother’s favorite color. You can decorate it with stickers, little doodles, and a lovely handwritten message. You can also create a personalized card decorated with glitter, paint, stickers, and anything else you can find! Be sure to include a sweet message and maybe even a silly or punny phrase such as “Olive, you mom!”

Another simple but heartfelt idea is creating a coupon book for your mom, including tickets she can turn in for little prizes. For example, some ideas may include “a free hug” or “movie night of your choice.”

Photo Montage

Something else filled with memories that a mother would enjoy is a photo montage! This could be done in a physical manner or even virtually.

You could compile a scrapbook of memories conveyed through photos and other decorations or use a modge-podge to create and frame a unique craft of photos you have put together.

You could create an online scrapbook or a video montage of past memories, photos, and videos virtually. Many apps allow you to compile photos into a video, and you could always add one of your mother’s favorite songs to the background!

Creative Cooking

Another way to make Mother’s Day memorable is to prepare a special meal or treat for your mother. Whether preparing breakfast in bed, a picnic lunch, or a sweet dessert, getting creative in the kitchen will surely bring your mother loads of delight. There’s nothing better than waking up to the smell of an excellent, home-cooked breakfast and having it delivered straight to your bed. Whipping up pancakes and eggs is simple for a kid, and the mother will most definitely love the treat!

You could always find a blanket, pack a picnic basket with your mom’s favorite sandwich, snacks, and drinks, and set up the backyard for a beautiful outdoor meal, basking in the sunshine!

Lastly, baking your mother a sweet treat would surely bring her a ton of happiness! If you deliver her some homemade cookies or a fresh-baked cake, that would surely make her day!

A Spouse’s Guide to Mother’s Day

“Proof of Mom” Picture, Mother’s Day 2022.

With Mother’s Day fast-approaching, I’m here to help the spouses out. Now, I am definitely biased, and you’ll notice a trend in what moms really want for Mother’s Day. I’m sure there’s some mathematical equation that I could use, taking into account variables such as the number of children and how old the children are, but I taught English and not math, so this will have to do.

If you and your spouse share small, tiny humans, your wife needs and wants a break! Trust me. As the sole parent most of the time (thanks, Army) and mother of essentially Irish triplets, I am spent. I am touched out and exhausted. I love my children, but a weekend away from them would be the most glorious thing right now. (Again, I have three small children, and I’m solo-parenting often, so please don’t judge-- we as moms get enough of that).

For moms of young children or those with more than one child, the best gift you can give is often some well-deserved personal space. Even if you’re “ballin’ on a budget,” taking the kids away so mom can sleep– uninterrupted– would be magical for some. Moms juggle a multitude of responsibilities every day, and sometimes, all they crave is a moment of quiet and solitude. Consider taking over the childcare duties for the day-- or if you can’t do something on Mother’s Day, gift her a special day in the near future to look forward to-- sometimes just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and a break coming is both a sigh of relief as well as an extra motivator. This allows her to relax and recharge without interruptions-- and without hearing “Mom! I want” or “Mom, can you ____?” 232 times a day. Seriously, I’ve heard “Mom” approximately 52 times in the ten minutes I’ve been writing this so far.

There was a slight difference between moms who work outside the home and moms who work within the home-- whether they work remotely or as stay-at-home moms. Those who do work outside of the home would like to spend some part of the day with their children, but do not let mom do ANY of the planning or put any of that responsibility on her-- that just adds more to her to-do list and the mental load. (This includes getting your mom her gift for Mother’s Day without your wife buying it for you.)

For moms of teens or adult children, the focus shifts to spending quality time together. Whether going out for a leisurely brunch, taking a scenic hike, or simply enjoying a heartfelt conversation, what matters most is the opportunity to connect and bond. Pro tip: Get in some good “Proof of Mom” pictures while you’re out and about-- this applies to moms of younger kids, too.

And moms of adult children and empty-nesters would love a surprise visit! Even if you can’t be together in person, a thoughtful video call or virtual chat can make her feel loved and appreciated.

I asked my Facebook friends to test my theory, and it’s credible. Here are just some of the 48 responses I received:

• “You nailed it. I asked to go to a fancy hotel alone and to only have to make decisions for myself.” (One child, under one year old)

• “I want freedom to buy an expensive thing for myself, I want brunch food (that I don’t have to cook), and I don’t want any fighting.” (Two children, pre-teens)

• “24 hours of someone catering to my every need with plenty of sleep and me not making any decisions or answering any questions.” (Three children, ages six and under)

• “15 minutes of peace without cleaning up a mess at this stage would be amazing, but that spa day... I feel ya!” (Twins, toddler age)

• “Bye!” (Two children, 6 and 4 years old)

• “When my kids were younger, my dream was to just have a hotel room alone for the night, order room service, and chill. Now that my kids are older (14 and 16), a nice lunch or game day just hanging out with them would be nice. But I still don’t want to have to really plan or cook. I do that the other 364 days of the year.”

Others who are still able to visit with their mothers and grandmothers appreciate that fleeting time, but they want a short break for part of the day, so schedule the grandparent visits and then plan dinner or plan a brunch and then make an afternoon visit.

One common thread: No matter the era of motherhood your spouse is in, it is a break from the mental load. This means they want to avoid thinking or making any decisions. Take the initiative to plan the day, whether organizing a special breakfast in bed, arranging a relaxing spa day, or preparing a picnic in the park. By taking the initiative and handling the details, you give her the gift of not worrying about anything.

Ultimately, the key to a successful Mother’s Day is to tailor the celebration to fit the preferences and desires of the mom in your life-- and tailor them to the era of motherhood she’s in-- her wants will differ depending on this. Whether providing space for relaxation, easing the mental load, or simply enjoying each other’s company, your thoughtfulness and effort will undoubtedly make her day extra special.

Oh, and no mother wants to cook on Mother’s Day. You’re welcome.

Mango Tango SHRIMP TACOS

“Mom, what’s for dinner?” is quite possibly my least favorite phrase. I spend too much time coming up with grocery lists, meal plans, etc., so when I find something quick and easy, I have to share it. We typically keep some frozen shrimp ready to rock in the freezer, and we just happened to have some taco toppings ready to go and on hand, so I threw the following together recently, and I was pleasantly surprised. There’s minimal preparation to this one, and I may try it again soon with feta cheese as a bonus, but here’s what I did with minimal effort.

Ingredients:

• red onion (pickled)

• your tortillas of choice

• mango salsa of choice (I tried the Great Value Sweet Heat Mango Salsa, and I was pleasantly surprised)

• shrimp (thawed)

Directions:

• avocado

• Roma tomatoes

• lettuce

• your favorite shrimp seasoning (I used Slap Ya Mama, as it’s a staple in my home)

1. Before cooking, thaw the shrimp and pickle the red onion. I prefer to thinly slice my onions and use white wine vinegar, a splash of red wine vinegar, and a couple of teaspoons of sugar for pickling. Set aside in a small bowl for 25-30 minutes.

2. Sauté the shrimp in a medium or large pan. Lightly or heavily season the shrimp with your favorite seasoning. I used Slap Ya Mama, giving it a few generous shakes each time I flipped the shrimp. When it’s entirely pink, you’re good to go.

3. While you’re cooking the shrimp or before that, prepare your toppings. I chose to smash some avocado and use it as a base on my tortillas, dice some Roma tomatoes, and add some shredded lettuce. I added the pickled red onion and topped it off with the mango salsa.

4. Construct your tacos however you like and enjoy!

Like I said, I’d add some crumbled feta next time, but this was quite tasty for a quick meal, so I used the toppings I had on hand. If I had time, I’d marinate the shrimp or try a different glaze or sauce to switch it up from the mango, but that store-bought salsa was clutch and did the work for me. Feel free to get creative.

Fahrenheit 132: A Carnivore’s Dream in Fredericksburg

In the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, Fahrenheit 132 stands as a culinary oasis, offering an unparalleled dining experience that transcends mere sustenance and is every carnivore’s dream. Arguably the best restaurant in town, Fahrenheit 132 captivates patrons with its exquisite ambiance, impeccable service, and a menu that pays homage to the finest ingredients and culinary craftsmanship.

Stepping into Fahrenheit

132 is akin to embarking on a culinary journey, and our recent visit was nothing short of exceptional. Celebrating my husband’s birthday with friends who had journeyed from D.C. added an extra layer of joy and festivity to the evening, making it all the more memorable.

From the moment we were greeted by the warm and attentive staff to the last bite of dessert, every moment was infused with a sense of indulgence and delight. Our server, attentive to every detail, made sure to accommodate my egg allergy, ensuring that I could fully partake in each course.

Our culinary voyage began with a tantalizing array of appetizers, including the freshest oysters imaginable– a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing the highest-quality ingredients. I was starving, too, so we opted for the truffle French fries as an extra appetizer, and they did not disappoint. Being a native of Pittsburgh, where we adorn every sandwich, salad, and any other dish you can imagine with French fries, my standards are high when it comes to my favorite potato varietal. They were amazing. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, the truffle and Parmesan were the chef’s kiss!

Next, two of us opted for a Caesar salad, while two (myself included) chose the French onion soup, a classic dish served at the perfect temperature. I often find that French onion soup comes out much too hot because the cheese traps everything underneath. Not this one; the onions were perfectly caramelized, and the melted cheese sat on top of the bread, not the entire bowl, ensuring that neither of us burned the roof of our mouths and could eat the soup immediately.

For the main course, we opted for the pièce de résistance: the tender, aged wagyu tomahawk steak. Sourced from the finest producers and expertly prepared by the chefs, each bite was a revelation of flavor and texture. Cooked to perfection, with a beautifully charred exterior giving way to a melt-in-your-mouth, pink interior, it was a carnivore’s dream come true.

Accompanying our steak was a selection of delectable sides, including shaved brussel sprouts, sauteed green beans, creamy mashed potatoes, and everyone’s favorite: truffle mac and cheese. Each side dish was seasoned to perfection, but the mac and cheese stood apart, with the aroma of truffles permeating every bite.

To complement our meal, we perused Fahrenheit 132’s extensive wine list and settled on a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Poliziano-- one of our favorite vintners from our years living in Italy. Its velvety texture, full body, moderately floral, and subtle black cherry notes perfectly complemented our steak, enhancing each bite and elevating the entire experience.

As the evening drew to a close, the chef surprised me with a special dessert to accommodate my egg allergy. A refreshing sorbet, accompanied by fresh fruit and whipped cream, was a delightful end to the meal. The gesture, along with a waxstamped birthday card, candle, and heartfelt message for my husband, encapsulated the hospitality and commitment to going above and beyond that defines Fahrenheit 132. Our friends shared the limoncello cake, and we all left with some doggy bags.

From the impeccable service to the unforgettable flavors, every aspect of our dining experience had been meticulously crafted to perfection. Without a doubt, Fahrenheit 132 stands atop the list of fine dining experiences in Fredericksburg. I’d recommend celebrating your next milestone there.

The Overland Campaign: The Beginning of the End of the Civil War

Steward T. Henderson is the co-founder of the 23rd Regiment United States Colored Troops, a living history organization representing that regiment and other regiments of the United States Colored Troops. He is also a member of Company B 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Steward is a member of the Emerging Civil War and has written blogs for their website and essays in a few of their books. He is a seasonal park ranger for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. He is a battlefield guide for Battlefield Tours of Virginia and a member of the newly organized African American Civil War Era Round Table.

On May 4th, 1864, Lieutenant General Ulysses Grant began his first campaign as General in Chief of the United States Army, the Overland Campaign. Instead of staying in Washington, DC, his headquarters would be with the Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George Meade, and the Independent IX Army Corps, commanded by Major General Ambrose Burnside. This immediately created an awkward command situation. General Burnside outranked General Meade, so Grant had to issue commands to each army to get them to work together.

On May 5th, the Battle of the Wilderness began on two fronts, one at Saunders Field on the Orange Turnpike and the other on the Orange Plank Road down to the intersection with the Orange Plank Road. There is bloody fighting in the jungle known as the Wilderness of Spotsylvania, just a year since the Battle of Chancellorsville, fought on much of the same grounds. The first two days of fighting against the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee produced tremendous casualties, and the third day was skirmishing at the Wilderness and cavalry actions at Todd’s Tavern.

This first action, known as the Grant versus Lee battles, cost about 29,000 casualties and the burning of soldiers in the many fires of this battle. The result was a tactical stalemate but a strategic victory for Grant, as he continued moving South instead of retreating. He stated to President Abraham Lincoln that there would be no turning back!

On May 8th, the Battle of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House would start with a race of the armies from Wilderness to Spotsylvania. Both armies are tired after fighting a major battle for the previous three days and will now fight here for two weeks! The fight for Laurel Hill started the soldiers entrenching, thus the start of trench warfare. Earthworks will now be taller than most soldiers, providing more cover for soldiers’ defenses.

Much of the fighting in this battle was hand-to-hand in driving rainstorms. The Confederates built their defenses in the shape of a mule shoe, which created a dangerous salient. The salient was breached in two decisive fights: Upton’s attack and the Battle of the Muleshoe. Colonel Emory Upton’s attack of 5,000 soldiers pierced the Muleshoe; Grant said if 5000 men could do that, what could 20,000 do?

General Winfield Scott Hancock’s II Corps attacked the Muleshoe and broke through, capturing 3000 soldiers and two generals. The Confederates counterattacked under General John B. Gordon, and the two armies fought for twenty-two and a half hours in a driving rainstorm.

Again, it was a stalemate and strategic victory for Grant as he continued to move southward. The cost was about 31,000 casualties. From May 5th to May 21st, 60,000 casualties resulted, and neither side had any victory. Grant was fighting a new kind of war—a war of exhaustion—which ended on April 9th, 1865, at Appomattox!

Bottle Cap Soda

Flower Wreath

To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome.

Materials:

• Soda bottle caps (about 14 caps)

• 1 (6-inch) embroidery hoop

• Purple, yellow and white paint

• Paint brush

Directions:

This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed.

• Different colored ribbons cut into (6-inch lengths)

• Hot glue

Step 1: Paint all the bottle caps white as a primer. Allow them to dry completely.

Step 2: Paint 7 bottle caps yellow and 7 bottle caps purple. Allow them to dry completely and then add a second coat.

Step 3: Once the paint is dry, paint the sides of the caps with a darker or lighter shade of purple and yellow to resemble the center of a flower (as shown in the picture). Allow it to dry.

Step 4: Cut your ribbons into 6-inch lengths.

Step 5: Use hot glue to attach 6 yellow bottle caps together to form a flower. Repeat the same process with the purple caps.

Step 6: Glue your flowers onto the embroidery hoop.

Step 7: Tie your ribbons around the hoop.
