Keyes Exteriors: Transforming Outdoor Spaces into Living Dreams

Keyes Exteriors isn’t just your average outdoor contractor. They prefer to think of themselves as “the architects of your outdoor oasis.” From patios to decks, screen porches, and retaining walls, they specialize in crafting spaces where nature meets luxury. Formerly known as Keyes Landscaping, LLC, their evolution into Keyes Exteriors signifies their commitment to excellence in outdoor living design and construction.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Family Heritage

Founded in 2016, by Travis Keyes, the company’s roots run deep in a family legacy of construction excellence. Travis’s grandfather, the proprietor of Rural Home Builders, instilled in him the values of hard work and quality craftsmanship. Starting his business as a sophomore at Mountain View High School, Travis honed his skills in landscaping and construction, gradually expanding his services to encompass the full spectrum of outdoor living projects.

At Keyes Exteriors, they treat you like family, too. “We don’t just build structures; we build relationships,” said Travis. “When you entrust us with your project, you become part of our extended family. We believe in treating every customer with the same care and attention we would give to our own kin.”

Their greatest satisfaction comes from turning your outdoor dreams into tangible realities and witnessing the joy on customers’ faces when they see the finished projects.

A Team Rooted in Passion and Expertise

Beyond their professional endeavors, Keyes Exteriors is first and foremost a family company.

“Our success wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our team members, many of whom have been with us since the early days,” said Travis. Travis started hiring fellow classmates to work with him five or six days a week after school years ago. One of those classmates is now a project manager for Keyes Exteriors.

Travis’s journey from high school entrepreneur to seasoned business owner is a testament to the power of hard work and perseverance. Alongside him stands Chelsea, his wife and integral part of the company, and the two even met while on a construction site.

“Chelsea is now a part of the company managing the decking division,” said Travis. “Lacey, Chelsea’s best friend, is the office manager, and my dad is a material runner. We are definitely a family company.”

Travis, Chelsea, and their son Grayson, along with their trusty yellow lab Benji, embody the spirit of togetherness both on and off the job site. Whether they’re cruising in their vintage Ford or simply enjoying the outdoors, the Keyes family’s passion for outdoor living is evident in everything they do.

Experience the Keyes Exteriors Difference

Whether you’re envisioning a serene patio retreat or a sprawling deck for entertaining, Keyes Exteriors is here to bring your vision to life.

“Our personalized approach ensures that each project is tailored to your unique needs and preferences, resulting in outdoor spaces that seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics,” explained Travis.

“From initial consultation to final installation, we’re with you every step of the way, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience from start to finish.”

When it comes to transforming your outdoor space, trust the experts at Keyes Exteriors to bring your vision to life. With a dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction, they’re not just building structures– they’re crafting dreams.

“When planning your next outdoor project, think about us so you can meet our team of motivated and knowledgeable sales consultants and in-house installers,” said Travis.

Join their family today and let them turn your outdoor aspirations into reality.

Within the vibrant community of Embrey Mill lies a family whose story epitomizes the power of love, resilience, and unwavering compassion. Meet Julie and Richard Jacquez, alongside their children Eli, Mimi, and Dylan. Their journey is a remarkable one, defined not only by their personal triumphs but also by their giving hearts and their collective commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Their story began in a serendipitous encounter at United Airlines, where Julie, a former sales & service representative, crossed paths with Richard, a traveler booking a flight. Julie, hailing from a rural town southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, found love in Richard, who grew up navigating the streets of Los Angeles, California. Richard’s early years were marked by hard work in construction, a path that ultimately led him to ascend the ranks to become a construction executive with DWatts Construction, specializing in build-outs and major renovations in Washington D.C. and surrounding areas.

Julie’s journey took her from the world of business to one of service and ministry, propelled by a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Armed with degrees in Business Administration and later in Ministerial Leadership, Julie was led “to a wonderful job with e3 Kids International as a Guatemala Mission Coordinator,” and now she works for Stafford County Public Schools at Garrisonville Elementary.

“It’s a total career change,” Julie explained, “but I love it and feel it has so much purpose serving our community.”

Their children, Eli, Mimi, and Dylan, embody the family’s ethos of compassion and generosity in their own unique ways. Eli, 24, graduated from Southeastern University in 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Ministerial Leadership and a minor in Organizational Leadership. After school, he followed his passion for ministry to become a Youth Pastor in Jacksonville, Florida, spreading love and kindness wherever he goes and enjoying newlywed life with his wife.

Mimi, 19, is currently a freshman pursuing a degree in Nursing and minoring in Missions at Southeastern University, driven by a desire to heal and uplift those in need.

“She loves watching the sunrise and sunset, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and doing mission work,” Julie explained. She also volunteers at an organization by her university called One More Child.

And then there’s Dylan, the youngest member of the Jacquez family, whose journey has been marked by both triumph and tribulation. Born with complex congenital heart defects and a rare genetic disorder, Dylan’s early years were fraught with uncertainty and fear, as he was on life support twice.

“The first two years were extremely challenging and we are beyond thankful to live in a part of the world with excellent medical care.”

Yet, through it all, his spirit remained unbroken.

“Between many doctor appointments and being intellectually disabled, it is sometimes challenging not only for Dylan but the whole family. It changed our perspective completely on life and we try to be grateful for every day, friend, and family member we have,” Julie said. “It’s also opened up our eyes to the Special Needs community. These kids and adults are such a joy to be around and always leave us with full hearts and smiles on our faces.”

Dylan is no different from his peers in that regard.

“He is the happiest kid and is always full of joy,” Julie said.

Dylan, now 14, loves everything Disney and has a passion for travel. Like the rest of his family, he loves learning about different places in the world, and, like any 14-year-old, he loves video games.

“He loves his special needs church group at The Mount,” Julie explained, “and he loves being a ‘tech guy’ and making slides for the group.”

Dylan’s condition catalyzed Julie’s involvement with the National Mended Little Hearts Organization. Julie was instrumental in the establishment of the Washington DC chapter in 2011 and she ran that faction of the organization for five years before handing it off to another mom. The National Mended Little Hearts Organization provides a lifeline for families facing similar challenges and shines a spotlight on the resilience and strength of the Special Needs

community. Dylan’s journey, with its ups and downs, served as a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. The Jacquezes cherish every moment together and every chance to travel as well.

“Our whole family loves to travel,” Julie explained. “We enjoy experiencing different cultures and learning about new places.” While family vacations are a big part of their lives and they love the excitement of new adventures, their hearts remain firmly rooted in their community, where they coach Special Olympics teams and lend a helping hand to those in need. Richard coaches basketball, golf, and track, while Julie coaches soccer. They also enjoy kayaking and spending time in the local waters.

But their passions still include mission work, too– Julie and Mimi have a particular fondness for this calling, traveling to Guatemala 14 times to help in the “remote village with food bags, school supplies, medical clinics, hygiene bags, and education.” When they aren’t volunteering or helping others, they enjoy going to the beach and snorkeling. Richard also developed a love for cooking and trying new recipes during COVID, and the family even got to experience a Tuscan cooking class while traveling to Florence, Italy. Greece, France, Barbados, and Sedona, Arizona also top their list of favorite destinations.

While they can’t get enough of traveling the world, they’re quite fond of the one they created in Embrey Mill as well.

“We love all of the great parks and recreation areas in the neighborhood,” Julie said, adding that they decided to move to the area almost nine years ago for the great schools and for other families with kids “so our own would have others to play with.”

As they continue to play, coach, and navigate life’s twists and turns, the Jacquez family’s love for one another and their community shines brightly. Their story is a testament to the power of resilience, compassion, and unwavering generosity, reminding us all of the profound impact that a giving heart can have on the world around us.

23rd USCT 160th Anniversary of Their First Skirmish

Steward T. Henderson is the co-founder of the 23rd Regiment United States Colored Troops, a living history organization representing that regiment and other regiments of the United States Colored Troops. He is also a member of Company B 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Steward is a member of the Emerging Civil War and has written blogs for their website and essays in a few of their books. He is a seasonal park ranger for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. He is a battlefield guide for Battlefield Tours of Virginia and a member of the newly organized African American Civil War Era Round Table.

May 15, 2024, will mark the 160th anniversary of the first skirmish of African American soldiers in action against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. This action was during General Ulysses Grant’s Overland Campaign, which began eleven months of action that ended with General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. The first two battles were fought on two of the battlefields in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park - Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House.

During the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the 23rd Regiment USCT was at Chancellorsville, guarding wagon trains on May 15th, 1864, when the 2nd Ohio Cavalry asked for assistance. General Thomas Rosser’s Confederate Cavalry Brigade attacked them. General Edward Ferrero marched the 23rd at the double quick to the intersection, now known as the Catharpin and Old Plank Roads intersection. They formed a battle line, fired on the Confederate army, and drove them away. They became the first African American soldiers to fight in “directed combat” against the Army of Northern Virginia. The white soldiers of the 2nd Ohio cheered them, now they knew that these Black soldiers would fight against the Confederates.

May 19th, 1864, General Ambrose Burnside commanded the IX Army Corps. The 4th Division of the corps, the African American division, will fight in another skirmish against Rosser’s Cavalry. His cavalry probed the Union lines closer to Fredericksburg, General Ferrero ordered his entire division to attack. Once again, they drove away the Confederates. There were few casualties in the two skirmishes. General Ferrero issued reports on each of the engagements.

Here is an excerpt of the first report that is included in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion:

“HDQRS. FOURTH DIVISION, NINTH ARMY CORPS, Miller’s House, on Plank Road east of Alrich’s, May 15, 1864

GENERAL: I have the honor to report that at 12:30 p. m. this day

The Second Ohio cavalry, stationed at Piney Branch Church, were compelled to fall back, being attacked by superior forces, consisting of one brigade of cavalry, with two pieces of artillery. I immediately ordered the Fourth Division in readiness and marched the Twenty-third U. S. Colored Troops to support the cavalry. On arriving at Alrich’s, on the plank road,

I found the Second Ohio driven across the road, and the enemy occupying the crossroads. I ordered the colored regiment to advance on the enemy in line of battle, which they did, and drove the enemy in perfect rout. Not being able to pursue with infantry, the Second Ohio formed and gave chase to Piney Branch Church, which they (the Second Ohio) now occupy.

I am, general, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

The 23rd USCT has a Virginia State Marker in commemoration of their skirmish at the entrance to the Sawhill Development on Catharpin Road in Spotsylvania County. They have an exhibit at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center and an exhibit panel on the Spotsylvania County African American History Trail. A picture of the 23rd is on the mural at the Spotsylvania County Supervisors meeting room. Fredericksburg has just put a new panel on its Civil Rights Trail, which features the 23rd USCT living historians for recreating the 1871 historic multiracial procession to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. The Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail is now a part of the United States Civil War Trail.

Thus, Beauty for Ashes was born from the vision God had given Cindy. The property of Beauty for Ashes was acquired in 2013, dedicated in 2015, and– with the renovation help of many local businesses, churches, and community members– the doors officially opened in January 2016.

Beauty for Ashes provides all the components the mother and child(ren) may need to set them up for a successful life. This consists of a Christian faith-based curriculum, life skills training, continued education for the mothers, grade school education for the children, healthcare, and childcare. Beauty for Ashes is a holistic ministry that hinges on these families’ social, mental, physical, and spiritual wholeness and restoration.

Cindy says, “Beauty for Ashes provides a safe, stable, loving home environment and offers help, hope, and healing to both mother and child.”

THE BEAUTY OF A SECOND CHANCE

Beauty for Ashes is a local women’s and children’s home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They provide a unique 9-12 month residential program that allows a mother and her child(ren) to stay and grow together as the mother is restored from a life-controlling situation.

Mike and Cindy Zello, Founders of Adult and Teen Challenge Virginia, have cared for individuals who struggle with addiction for 40 years. After serving in the Washington, DC area for 19 years, they moved with their children to Virginia in 2002 to pioneer a brand new Teen Challenge program in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They have successfully opened a long-term residential program for men, the Beauty for Ashes Women and Children’s Home, and are actively pursuing a presence in Richmond, Virginia, with the programs they offer.

Executive director and founder of BFA, Cindy, explained the purpose behind her desire to found the organization, saying, “Mothers who are struggling with addiction or other life-controlling problems too often do not seek or find help because it means separation from their children, leaving both mother and child caught in a cycle of dysfunction, hopelessness, and brokenness.”

She continued to express her observations, stating that the population is “in desperate need of residential care, [but] there are so few programs that provide long-term, residential care for women without separation from their children.”

Over the past eight years, BFA has had a remarkable impact, caring for more than 70 families, including 14 pregnant women. Many BFA graduates now live as thriving mothers in Spotsylvania or neighboring counties. For each family, Beauty for Ashes has met them where they are at, recognizing that the needs of each mother and child are not identical. As Cindy says, “We love and care for them according to their needs,” BFA adapts to each family’s needs through intentional care that aims to help these families become healthy and whole to an extent where they can maintain this wholeness outside of BFA.

Beauty for Ashes can make a lasting impact on the lives of so many people because of the private funds they receive from local churches, organizations, and individuals.

If you, or someone you know, would like to support Beauty for Ashes and their cause, you can do so through donations or volunteer services.

As Zello summarized Beauty for Ashes’s immense impact on the community, she said, “These women had been written off, and society had determined they didn’t deserve to be mothers. Given the opportunity and the incredible program of Beauty for Ashes, they no longer live in shame and guilt or become another statistic representing failure. Families are being healed and made whole.”

To find out more visit, www.atcva.org. If you’re interested in information concerning the current tangible goods needed at BFA, to get involved through volunteerism, or becoming a community partner to host the BFA team for meetings, fundraisers, and church services/events, you can contact Cindy Zello at cindyz@atcva.org.

For more information about the Beauty for Ashes platform, and current events, you can find them on Facebook at: Beauty for Ashes Women and Children’s Home and Adult and Teen Challenge Virginia, and on Instagram @teenchallengeva.

Pots & Palettes is more than a “Paint Your Own Pottery” Studio; it’s a haven for creativity, relaxation, and making lasting memories. Nestled in the heart of the Lees Hill Community, the studio invites people of all ages to unleash their inner artists while enjoying the company of friends and family.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

For current owner Catherine Lawton, what started as a simple hobby evolved into a lifelong love affair with pottery. Over the last 50 years, Catherine honed her craft, transitioning from selling finished pieces at craft shows to owning and operating pottery shops. In 2004, she took the reins of Pots & Palettes, a cherished establishment fostering creativity since 1997.

For over two decades, Pots & Palettes has been more than just a studio; it’s been a cornerstone of artistic expression and community bonding. Their commitment to fostering creativity knows no bounds. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a novice, they provide a welcoming environment for painting pottery in studio or attending classes, such as clay hand-building, canvas painting, and mosaic art. They have also recently added a new, private party room for larger groups for family gatherings and birthday celebrations.

Unleash Your Inner Artist

At Pots & Palettes, they believe creativity should be embraced and it should not be intimidating. They debunk the myth of the “perfect artist” and instead encourage their guests to “enjoy the journey.”

With their guidance and support, even those who claim they “can’t paint” find themselves beaming with pride.

“People say they can’t paint, and then they are so proud of their piece after firing in the kiln,” said Catherine of beaming patrons.

But their studio isn’t just a place to create art; it’s a space where memories are forged. From intimate gatherings with friends to lively birthday parties, every visit to Pots & Palettes is an opportunity to laugh, smile, and cherish the moment.

As families return year after year, they witness the joy of watching children grow into young adults, only to bring their own little ones to experience the magic of pottery painting.

“It’s so cool to watch everyone’s kids grow up each time they bring their kids in to paint,” said Catherine.

Experience the Magic of Pots & Palettes

As patrons step into the studio, they’re greeted not only by the vibrant colors of the pottery but also by the warmth of their staff.

“We believe in the power of personal connections,” said Catherine, “which is why we encourage guests to sign up for classes and events in person.” This fosters a sense of community that extends beyond the paintbrush.

At Pots & Palettes, creativity knows no bounds. Whether you’re looking for a fun outing with friends, a unique birthday party experience, or simply a space to unwind and create, they invite you to join them on an artistic adventure. After all, as Catherine says, “Relax, have fun, and enjoy the adventure.”

The Gift of HOME

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Home Improvement?” Does it bring a smile with thoughts of endless possibilities to new heights and high hopes, or does it usher in a cringe with visions of an ongoing and expensive “to-do” list? Whatever your reaction, it’s time we look at this topic from a fresh vantage point. Our homes are more than a habitat and much more than a showcase. Our homes are our gathering place, our growing place, our place to connect, rejuvenate, and thrive. No matter the family size, culture, life stage, or circumstance, we must return to nurturing our homes. We must see it as a vessel of something far more valuable than brick and mortar. Home needs to become our happy place again. Not just for ourselves to enjoy but also as a place to share with others.

Where should we begin when we think of making this “gift” to ourselves and others come alive? Is it a newly constructed deck or wrap-around porch where family and friends play games and grill? New siding boasts an inviting color that draws you in and welcomes you home. Would it be a quiet refuge of an edition for a reading room with warm sunbeams dancing through the window panes? A finished basement with a guest bathroom and bedroom would bless all who stay with you. They would never forget a home away from home. Would your kitchen be where memories are made, and tastes savored? Intimate lighting and an inviting fireplace go a long way for relaxation. A lush carpet to bury your toes and earthy hardwood for your furry friend to scamper. Do you desire a primary bedroom that would go beyond your wildest dreams? It all comes down to

what is essential to you. This is your space, your story to create, and with endless inspiration and finite funds, you must define and prioritize your goals.

Once your ambitions are defined and arranged in a hierarchy of absolute wants and dire necessities, look at what can be done now and what might need to wait until later. Shop around and start pricing different companies for the upgrades you long for and the space you need. It is fantastic to get a good deal, but you can’t put a price tag on quality products, excellent craftsmanship, and having done it right the first time. Plan your work and work your plan, but don’t forget to enjoy your current home while dreaming about the look and atmosphere you desire to obtain. During the planning stage, evaluate your living and storage areas and declutter. This assessment of the value of objects we are attached to may be a purging of the soul more than it is of possession. This process will revitalize you and your home. Posting a few more oversized items for sale that no longer match your style or life stage may contribute towards the renovation budget.

Get to know your personal style, not just what the latest home designer or influencer thinks is captivating, but what says, “This is me; come and experience me and stay awhile.” Begin collecting a portfolio of ideas and samples of key pieces. Take photos and capture the process. Great joy comes from progress, not perfection. Behind each change is a tale. What or who sparked your inspiration? Who helped you select the right paint tone, and what adjustments can be made in the future? Ideas will continue to evolve during the process. Let others catch a glimpse of your renovation story. Reminders of La Dolce Vita: A Restaurant Review of Orofino

As self-proclaimed aficionados of Italian cuisine, my husband and I were eager to try Orofino, drawn by its reputation for genuine Italian fare. Having spent nearly three years living in Italy, our standards were high, and Orofino did not disappoint.

From the moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted with the warm aromas of traditional Italian cooking and the inviting ambiance of an authentic trattoria or ristorante. The interior exudes charm with exposed brick walls in an upscale but not pretentious manner. The decor was simple and cozy, adding to the atmosphere.

One of Orofino’s standout features is its commitment to showcasing the diverse flavors of Italy’s various regions. This dedication is evident in the restaurant’s meticulously curated menu, which boasts classic Italian staples highlighting each region’s specialties. We were delighted to discover a key on the menu indicating the origin of each dish, allowing us to embark on a stroll down memory lane, recalling our favorite trips to Toscana, Lazio, and Liguria.

To kick off our dining experience, we indulged in a mixed bruschetta antipasti, a delightful assortment of crispy bread topped with an array of fresh, vibrant toppings, ranging from the classic pomodori mix to goat cheese paired with a truffle sauce. Paired with a bold and robust Primitivo from Puglia, the bruschetta set the stage for what was to come—an evening of culinary bliss.

I have an egg allergy, so I typically skip the primi menu (most of the fresh, handmade pasta contains eggs), and my husband has become quite the carbonara snob, so we opted to jump straight to the secondi options. I savored every bite of the tagliata di manzo, a well-seasoned steak cooked to perfection and served alongside prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with patate al forno, a classic staple side dish in Veneto (and most of Northern Italy). My husband indulged in the lamb chops with a delectable glaze and fresh zucchini vegetable medley. Each bite was a nostalgic reminder of the flavors of Italy that we had grown to love.

The service was also exceptional, and our server had excellent recommendations and fantastic wine acumen. Honestly, the one thing missing was the complimentary limoncello that typically accompanied the end of a meal at our favorite local trattorias. While we understood that liquor laws in Virginia may prohibit such gestures, it was a minor detail in an otherwise impeccable dining experience.

For anyone seeking a taste of Italy without the airfare, look no further than Orofino—it’s the real deal.

Colonial Forge High School Highlights

Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge junior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.

Students Got “Talont”

Colonial Forge’s “Talont” Show was on Thursday, March 7. There was a huge crowd, and tickets sold out the night of.

All of the acts were amazing, starting with Ian Bast on the piano, playing a personal piece. After his performance, he spoke of his inspiration to play at the show.

“I’ve never really shown anyone what I can do. I kind of kept it to myself, so I thought it was a good idea to show people.”

And people definitely saw what he could do, with multiple people coming up to him, showing their appreciation for his talent after the show.

Next was Cordillia Kargbo, who sang her rendition of “Pearl Diver.” Her dramatic performance was a great way to kick off the many singing acts that night.

Duo Mia Polley and Xavier Brewer performed “Another Ugly Autumn.” This was their second year performing.

“We did it last year, and it went pretty well. So we just decided, we might as well do it again, and so you know, we just chose one of our favorite songs,” Xavier Brewer said.

Despite this being their second year, performing in front of a crowd always comes with some anxiety.

“I’m like belting and the beginning is already like a really high note. So you have to go full send at the beginning, or my voice will crack. So that definitely caused some nervousness,” Mia Polley (‘25) explained.

With Xavier on the guitar and Mia singing, the duo left the crowd wanting more.

Colonial Forge Teacher Ms. Takara Shinard read self-written poetry.

The poem was touching and spoke of a narrator losing her father to a drunk driving incident, warning the listeners not to act so recklessly and to avoid meeting the same fate.

After her touching reading, Bailey Dias performed a hula to He Ui by Kawika Alfiche.

Dias was able to power through her music, stopping mid-performance, and continued her dancing as the track eventually resumed, going on to win third place.

Despite the technical difficulties, the show continued, making way for the compelling performance of the dance group Supernova Kpop. The group consisted of girls Victoria Phinizy, Ella Otchere, Railyn Washington, Savannah Fogle, Freddi Chambers, Doris Gatluak, Reilly Washington, Gabriella Kang, Catherine Cartwright, Nana-Ago Abeasi, and Miiva Nebuladde.

The group did a fantastic job and wowed the audience with their dance moves.

“I love dancing and just wanted somewhere to put that energy,” Nana Abeasi said.

With all the hard work put in, they were able to win first place and the money prize of 200 dollars.

“We have so many members, so the money is going to be distributed among us. I think we’ll all get about $18 each. It’s okay, though, because it’s not about the money. I’ll probably get McDonald’s with it,” Victoria Phinizy shared.

A crowd favorite, up next came James Sites, a solo guitarist, playing Enter Sandman by Metallica. He had the crowd roaring for his skills.

“My favorite performance tonight was probably the guy that played Metallica. His guitar skills were really good,” Daniel Thomas, a Mountain View audience member, shared.

After intermission, Act 2 started with a bang. Possibly the most eccentric act of the night, Wesley Maxfield and Daniel Hunter performing Night Witches by Sabaton.

“We did the song Midway last year, and it had an amazing crowd reception. So immediately, Daniel and I knew if we were given the opportunity, we wanted to do this again,” Wesley commented.

In the background of their performance was a photo of two female pilots. Although this left some confused, Wesley was able to clarify.

“We wanted to do something by the same band because it’s our favorite band and we want to try and put them out there more. Unfortunately, there aren’t many songs that fit within the three-minute time we were given for the audition. And so we found one that would work because it’s about female pilots. And we figured, hey, it is Women’s History Month. So we thought it would be an appropriate choice,” Wesley continued.

Speaking of bangs, when Elizabeth Mehltretter experienced many mic issues, including a big “bang” sounding off in the middle of her performance, she continued on without a hitch.

Despite the way she took it all in stride, prior to her show, there were lots of nerves.

“At first, I was really nervous. I had to take a break from warming up and stressing, so I meditated for a little bit. I took a shower and did some other stuff. Then I came back and tried to practice again, and it went really well,” Elizabeth shared.

Another fan favorite of the night was Gavin Flynn, a sophomore performing Shine Bright Like a Diamond by Rihanna.

However, there was one difference in his performance: his reluctance to be there.

Gavin participated in a fantasy football league, and unfortunately for him but lucky for the crowd, he lost. His punishment: perform at the school talent show.

Luckily, a huge crowd turned up for him, with dozens of students shining their phone flashlights and cheering him on as he sang.

All in all, it was quite a showcase of talented Forge students.

North Stafford High School Highlights

Nora Ahmad, currently in her junior year at North Stafford High School, is involved with the school’s DECA Club and the Book Buddy program. She harbors a strong interest in literature, journalism, business, and writing. Nora aspires to achieve her dream of becoming a published author one day.

A Timeless, Classic, and Magical Production: Introducing The Wizard Of Oz

North Stafford High School is proud to introduce the production: The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard Of Oz is a musical about a girl named Dorothy who travels to a magical land called Oz. On her journey to meet a magical Wizard who can take her back home, she meets friends and faces many challenges.

The production team has worked hard to make this musical extra special for the students and staff at North Stafford High School. All year long they have been dedicated to making amazing plays that are truly enjoyable for all students.

“We started the year with a dinner theater called: Cafe Murder. We had to perform in the cafeteria since our theater was going through renovations,” said director, Tyler Shore. “This was a huge hit with our community.”

Cafe Murder was a huge hit, as students talked about it for weeks, and its success is a testament to the dedication and passion the students have for theater and the fantastic leadership of Shore.

“I enjoy being able to teach students lifelong skills that they can use in the real world. I also enjoy problem-solving challenges that come up,” Shore continued. “I always look forward to opening night the most,” Shore said.

“My personal favorite part of the rehearsals is probably the energy of everyone,” said Bianca George, who has been involved with the theatre program at North Stafford for two years.

“I can really tell that everyone really puts in as much effort as possible, and it’s truly endearing,” she continued.

“You can truly tell when a performance is a good performance when you can tell the actors are having fun with the show. I think seeing them enjoy themselves on stage adds on to the enjoyment of watching the show.”

Having fun and producing a great environment to be in is a common theme here at North Stafford. Our extracurricular activities really excel in this area by displaying a fun, upbeat, and lighthearted atmosphere. Bianca mentioned that an important part of rehearsing and performing is not getting in your head. By this, she means that acting should feel as natural and flowy as having a conversation and this can only be perfected by practice.

“Having friends and great leadership that understands you and understands your struggles can really help the quality of your performance by uplifting you and supporting you,” she said.

“I do enjoy doing the Wizard Of Oz, it’s fun seeing things come together,” Bianca said. “Plus, there’s some stage magic that’s fun to act out!” Bianca will be playing the roles of Glinda and Aunt Em.

“I think that joining theatre was the main thing that helped me to make friends, to be honest. It’s a huge safe space, and having that allowed me to be my authentic self and encouraged me to share that with others.”

Overall, North Stafford’s production team is a great environment filled with quality leadership, passion, and is a great place to make friends.

it a reality.

Planning for Life After High School

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”

Parents of rising high school juniors, seniors, and the soon to be class of 2024 graduates, this is for you. It seems like yesterday my kids were in elementary school, and now my youngest is in college. I mean where does the time go? What is the plan for life after high school? Have you really talked about it? Below are some things to think about and possibly plan for your students:

Rising Juniors (11th graders)

• Ask your counselor for your grade point average (gpa) and class rank

• Your overall gpa from 9th,10th and 11th grade are what you’re applying to college with, so finish 10th grade strong. It’s not too late.

• Visit colleges in person or virtually, if you haven’t started. This helps narrow down preferences when it’s time to apply. Plus, the admissions personnel will talk about the importance of grades, involvement, etc. It’s a great back up to what you may have said at home but fell on deaf ears.

• Make sure your student is involved in a club, sport,or activity he or she is interested in, and encourage your student to have some leadership experience. He or she can also volunteer, babysit, work, etc. The point is that they do something meaningful with their time.

• Plan out the next two years and know when the Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and SAT exams are.

▷ When are college applications due?

▷ What’s needed for the military if that’s your path?

▷ What jobs or internships are you looking for if you’re going into the workforce?

• The summer after 11th grade is college application time.

• Google ‘What are the prompts for the Common Application?’ See if it’s the same as the year before. Sometimes it is. If this is the case, then your student can work on that before senior year begins.

• If the high school offers a college Bootcamp, attend it with your student.

• Look for college scholarships.

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

Rising Seniors (12th grade)

• Parents, this should be an exciting time for you and your student(s).

• Many colleges have November application deadlines for Early Decision and Early Action opportunities. Look at each college to see what those dates are.

• Some colleges have Rolling Admissions and accept applications as early as July and August which means a decision may be received by August or September.

• Students need to keep their grades up and take the most rigorous classes available to them. Some colleges will resend acceptances if students slack during senior year.

• College tours are informative and allow the student to see and feel if the college is a good fit before they actually attend. It can save you the application fee if they decide it’s not a school they want to attend.

• Set a goal with your student to decide when all applications will be completed. If your student does it early, then he/she can focus on school work and enjoy the many exciting activities that are a part of the senior year experience. Some Regular Decision Application

dates are as late as January and February, and decisions don’t come out until March or April.

• Apply, apply, apply for scholarships

• Some private colleges and universities give more money than state colleges and universities and some give enough for it to be the equivalent to an instate college or university. Don’t limit your students’ opportunities because you don’t think you can afford it.

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

Class of 2024: Congratulations!

• Celebrate this milestone with your student. Encourage your student to stay connected to good friends, and to be okay knowing that they may never see some of their classmates again.

• Whatever your student’s path, enjoy the time together. You can help them pay attention to details for upcoming events.

▷ When is onboarding for the new job?

▷ What is the deadline date for the math or composition placement exam?

▷ What is the deadline date to select housing and dining choices for their college?

▷ When does team practice begin?

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

• As parents, we try our best to know our children. Counselors are asking them what their interests are and what their plans are after high school. It’s a challenging time. It’s an exciting time. It’s time to start talking about it, even if they have no idea. Broad experiences outside of the classroom will help them learn what they like and dislike. Knowing what you dislike is just as important as knowing what you like.I hope you noticed the emphasis on being aware of their social media accounts. Don’t let a bad picture or post affect a future opportunity. Let’s continue to talk to our students and remind them that as parents we’re on their team.

“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? • 2 Wiggly eyes (small size 1 cm)

Directions:

• Hot glue gun

• Scissors

Step 1. Paint a clothespin completely with any color (this part is optional). Repeat this step for each caterpillar you want to make. Let it dry.

Step 2. Depending on the size of your pompoms, glue 5 or 6 pompoms along the side of your clothespin. Wait for the glue to dry.

Step 3. Add the googly eyes to your caterpillar.

Step 4. Glue a tiny pompom for the nose. Let it dry.

Step 5. Bend the pipe cleaner to form an antenna.

Step 6. Glue the antenna on top of the pompom with the wiggly eyes.
