Uplifting the Women of Stafford

With Women’s History Month last month, I wanted to shine a light on an incredible event that uplifts the fantastic women of Stafford: Central VA’s Most Influential Women Banquet.

Three individuals in Stafford, Michele Riddick, Vernon Green, and Garry Holland, who all have founded either businesses or nonprofits in the area, came together to establish the event.

These exceptional leaders in their own fields felt that the Stafford community needed a place to honor and recognize the wonderful women of Stafford. Together, these individuals and their organizations, Riddick’s Entertainment & Events, G3 Community Services, and #ENOUGH, combined their efforts and established an annual event to honor and “celebrate the phenomenal women who are making an indelible mark on our community.”

“As co-founders of the event, we work continuously to expand the reach of the event and increase the prestige associated with being an honoree,” Holland explained. “Additionally, I’ve overseen the impartial and autonomous Selection Committee process every year.”

These women are chosen through a committee that is formed every year. The members of the committee are culturally and racially diverse and have all different backgrounds. The organization is promoted through various social media platforms and accepts nominations through an online link each year.

Once nominations close, the committee reviews all of the candidates using a rubric so that there’s an objective rating for each nominee. Then the committee reviews the overall scores and reviews the selections. After all of the nominees have been selected, it is time for the banquet.

Keynote speaker for this year’s event was Congresswoman and Virginia Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger. Emmy

Award-winning news manager Terri Toliver served as the emcee of the prestigious event.

The banquet also showcased numerous local business owners, artists, and community members. Together, Riddick, Green, and Holland had a vision to create something that was empowering to the community, and that is exactly what they have accomplished with the Most Influential Women of Central Virginia.

“When it comes to influential women, there are so many amazing women in the community, and I am so honored to be recognized as one of them,” said Dr. Felisha Kimble, a past recipient of the award. “The men and women in front and behind the scenes of this organization are truly why it has flourished the way it has.”

The winners of the 2024 Annual Central VA Most Influential Women’s Banquet, held on March 2, included the following incredible women: LaToya Benton, Carylee Carrington, Yolondria Carter-Dixon, Meghan Cotter, Elaine Crocker, Kim Cummings, Pamela Curtis, Palinda Gaines, Mary Katherine Greenlaw, Janette Holland, Mishelle Krogstad, and Gigi McMillan. Congratulations to these amazing women, they have continued to uplift the comunity and ensure that their work is not finished.

“I felt honored and humbled to be one of the women among all of the women selected this year,” Janette Holland said. “The things that they’ve done and accomplished… I was just overall honored to be selected.”

Riddick, Green, and Holland are breaking down barriers and societal norms and empowering women across the region through this organization. Although this organization is still relatively new, they have made drastic efforts to uplift the women in our community, and I have no doubt that they will not continue to thrive and prosper in the many years to come; you will be hearing their names often.

A ofPortraitFamily:

THE SOAN-PREAP FAMILY

In the bustling heart of Montreal, Canada, Mora Soan’s journey began—a journey that would intertwine her fate with that of her loving husband, Jack Preap. Their love story, ignited by a chance encounter at a family wedding, quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership and adventure.

“From the moment I saw his genuine smile, I knew he was the one,” Mora reminisced. “Jack has all the qualities I was looking for in a husband: caring, honest, and compassionate.” Jack took his shot, and the very next day the two were in France together.

“For three weeks, we roamed Europe as carefree tourists, creating cherished memories that would bind us.”

One thing that binds them is their respect for education, lifelong learning, and continual improvement in all aspects of their lives. Jack, a distinguished graduate of Carnegie Mellon, embarked on a career path in electrical engineering, driven by a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to excellence.

“Jack highly values education and is always seeking opportunities for self-improvement,” Mora said. Jack works for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Mora graduated from College de Rosemont in Montreal, Canada with a degree in business management.

“Later, I pursued my college degree in accounting at Nova,” said Mora. “Currently, I work as a paraprofessional at Kate Waller Barrett for Stafford County,” dedicating herself to shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning.

Their union blessed them with two remarkable teenagers, Brandon and Lana Preap, each carving their own unique paths in the world. Brandon, with a passion for Biomedical Science, aspires to become an ophthalmologist.

“Brandon is also a car enthusiast and enjoys visiting car collections,” said Mora.

Meanwhile, Lana, a shining star at North Stafford High School, showcases her talents in music, art, and community service. With nearly a decade of piano mastery under her belt, Lana’s artistic flair shines through her illustrations and her dedication to achieving the coveted Gold Award in Girl Scouts Troop 5461.

“Lana possesses a remarkable talent for art and serves as the illustrator for the captivating Jacob in Japan,” Mora said. Mora is the author of the children’s book Jacob in Japan, which is Mora’s first children’s book that tells the tale of a picky eater who must learn to try new foods if he wants to travel the world. She also contributes to our local magazines, Stafford Living, Neighbors of Chancellorsville, and Neighbors of Courthouse, through her creative kids’ crafts.

“Growing up, I discovered immense joy in the art of drawing and painting. I would borrow books from my local library and immerse myself in learning how to paint landscapes,” she explained. “I also enjoy reading personal growth books.”

Following Mora’s lead, the rest of the SoanPreap household resonates with creativity and compassion. From her early days immersed in the art of drawing and painting to her commitment to volunteer work at the Lloyd Moss Free Clinic, Mora’s spirit of generosity and creativity knows no bounds. Her eclectic hobbies, from crocheting to writing children’s books, reflect her boundless passion for self-expression and philanthropy. Their family dynamic was further enriched by the addition of Bailey, a senior Shih Tzu rescued by Mora three years ago. Bailey’s gentle presence brought joy and warmth to their home, becoming an integral part of their family adventures and cherished memories.

“Bailey was sweet and gentle, and his little face was adorable,” Mora said. “I treasured his companionship, and he even became a part of our family trips to Montreal, and I even crocheted hats and clothes for him.” Sadly, Bailey left the Soan-Preap family too soon, but his little paws left impressions on their hearts.

Stafford, Virginia, has left its own impression as well.

“We relocated to Stafford 22 years ago because of Jack’s job,” Mora explained. “With the birth of my son, followed by the arrival of my daughter three years later, the house became our loving nest where we’ve made countless unforgettable memories.” Here Mora and Jack transitioned from the hustle and bustle of city life to the tranquility of suburban life.

“I grew up in a city where stores and restaurants were just a short walk away, and I could easily take the bus to spend the day exploring downtown Montreal. The transition to the quiet suburban lifestyle in Stafford was a significant change, but I’ve managed to adapt and find joy in the more relaxed pace of life.”

Mora and Jack discovered newfound joys in tending to their garden, “where in the summertime, we delight in harvesting tomatoes, bitter melon, radishes, and more,” and exploring the quaint charm of downtown Fredericksburg. “Downtown Fredericksburg is my absolute favorite destination. I could easily spend an entire day hunting for treasures in the antique stores. Each rare object from the past feels precious and carries its own unique story,” Mora said.

“The charming little coffee shops, local bakeries, and La Petite Auberge never fail to transport me back to France in my daydreams. And, of course, the Jabberwocky Bookstore holds a special place in my heart as the most magical spot of all.”

Mora has brought her own magic to the Jabberwocky, as they sell Jacob in Japan on their shelves, and she helps to spread magic through her volunteerism as well. Mora is involved in several activities in her neighborhood, has participated in the breast cancer walk at Mary Washington Hospital, and can be seen at Kate Waller Barrett’s Trunk-or-Treat at Halloween.

She’s donated her book to local libraries and also crochets toys for the animal shelter.

As a family, they find fun and rejuvenation in the shores of Virginia Beach, where the soothing rhythm of the waves beckons them to unwind and reconnect with nature. Camping and hiking adventures in the woods provide moments of respite, strengthening their bond and creating lasting memories.

“I believe it’s important to connect with nature,” Mora explained. And the Soan-Preap Family will continue to make connections within the community and with each other as they continue to write their story– one cherished moment at a time.

Mora would like neighbors to know that she has two upcoming book signings. The first is at Barnes and Noble at 15000 Potomac Town Place on April 13 at noon. The second will be held at the Barnes and Noble in Fredericksburg at 1220 Carl D. Silver Parkway on April 20 at 12:30 p.m.. Her second book, Jacob in Canada, is now available for purchase.

5 Things You Didn’t Know about Jubilation’s Vibrant 55-Plus Lifestyle

Jubilation by Silver Companies, a premier 55-plus community along the beautiful Rappahannock River, offers all the convenience and luxury you deserve. Here are five special features that make Jubilation such a great place to live.

1. First-rate entertainment

Ask just about anyone what they love about Jubilation, and the first thing they rave about is the director of entertainment, Eric Brouman. “He’s really a mover and a shaker,” said Jubilation member Charlie Griner. “We have musical events several times a week, rock bands, country bands, singers, sometimes even a polka band.”

Charlie and his wife, Brenda, also love the regular outings Brouman arranges to Fredericksburg restaurants, as well as cultural activities like a recent trip to the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts to see the Broadway hit “Jersey Boys.”

2. Nature at your door

Jubilation has its own private park, where you’ll find an amphitheater, hobby clubhouses, a nature path, a butterfly garden, pickleball and bocce ball courts, and more.

The park is what convinced Nancy Ayers to move to Jubilation. “When I learned I could have a raised gardening bed there, that made the case for me,” Ayers said.

She started a garden club, where members grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

3. Chef-crafted food

Meals at Jubilation are anything but ordinary. Each morning, there’s a chef-crafted breakfast buffet to rival a five-star hotel.

The unique dinners are served tapas-style that showcase the creativity of the culinary team, who can accommodate special diets as well. There’s also an excellent salad bar. And best of all, you’re not limited to a single dinner choice. You’re welcome to enjoy as many different dishes as you like.

4. The ease of making new friends

“You know, I have more friends here than I’ve ever had, and it’s wonderful,” said Brenda Griner.

When you first move in, you’ll be introduced to other members you can go to dinner or an event with. At meet-your-neighbor get-togethers, strangers become friends by sharing life experiences, and game events are another fun way for people to get acquainted. There’s also a biography booklet with information about each member that makes it easy to find people with similar interests to yours.

5. A focus on wellness

To foster wellness, Jubilation partners with three notable organizations.

Mary Washington Healthcare has a full-time medical concierge at Jubilation to assist in arranging VIP medical services when needed. They also offer fascinating seminars with the latest information on health.

Aegis Therapies provides many different types of therapy, including occupational therapy, physical therapy and aqua therapy.

Visiting Angels is there when you need support for daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping, and even pet walking.

And yes, small pets are welcome at Jubilation. In fact, the Griners reported that their two cats, Olivia and Bootsy, love their brand-new apartment. For more information, please visit jubilation.com.

It’s History With a Twist: A Look at The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild

Malanna Henderson, a Detroit native, learned how to sing Jazz by listening to records by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn before she entered kindergarten. Reading Nancy Drew novels, while in middle school, piqued her interest in writing her own stories. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit, and a MFA in Creative Writing from City University of New York. An award-winning playwright, singer and songwriter, her adoptive city of Fredericksburg blessed her with a husband and an opportunity to produce a collection of Civil War themed plays. Check out her book, On the Wings of Freedom, and more information at malannahenderson.com

The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild mix history with scandal and adventure as they perform first-person narratives from daring historical personages. These women defied 19th century decorum and flourished outside the communal spheres of family, church and home.

Stafford resident Kim Harmon charms audiences as Victoria Woodhull who rose to prominence from a child fortune-teller to become the first woman candidate to run for the presidency of the United States in 1872, against the incumbent Ulysses S. Grant, and Democrat Horace Greely. Ignored by editors of established periodicals, she founded her own newspaper to tout her scandalous beliefs of free-love, divorce, and voting rights for women.

Sheila Chambers, of Stafford, developed an enslaved character, a composite representing millions of women who toiled from sunup to sundown. They wielded resistance in many forms, often subtle and undiscovered.

“When I look in the mirror and see the ancestors staring back… and when I open my mouth to sing and hear the strong, deep, melodic voice of the enslaved flowing from my lungs, I have no choice but to follow my heart by capturing through music their stories that were never told.”

Faceless and nameless, their existence lives on through the lyrics of their songs. Chambers, a composer, captures their enduring spirit with her dramatic voice.

Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, often portrayed by Malanna Henderson of Spotsylvania, became a renowned opera singer, and the first African American to give a commanding performance at Buckingham Palace for Queen Victoria in 1853.

“Here, I have a chance to combine my love of history with my talents as a singer, songwriter and actress,” Henderson said.

Founder of the Lady Time Travelers, and the Women of the American Civil War, member Denise Benedetto of Locust Grove, often dons the persona of Mary Elizabeth Bowser, a free woman with a photographic memory. Disguised as an enslaved domestic in the Jefferson Davis household, Bowser learned of and passed on military secrets to the Union.

The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild was founded in 2022 by Yvette S. Blake, Spotsylvania resident and Army veteran, when she gathered members from various Civil War reenactment groups to form a new guild. She breathes life into Lucy Ann Walker, who by moving garments on the clothesline signaled to her husband, Dabney, across the Rappahannock River, the movements of the Rebel army. Dabney was a scout for the Union, and she, a laundress for the Confederates.

“I love history and strive to honor our ancestors,” states Blake. “Moreover, it’s my desire to educate the public on the adventures and challenges of women during the Civil War through historical re-enactments and demonstrations. I want to make history fun by incorporating the past with a twist of the present and serve as a community resource for those seeking to better understand and appreciate the culture of women during the Civil War.”

Since their inception, the ten-member guild have appeared at civic events including DC Emancipation Day Parade, Fairfax History Day, Fort Pocahontas, 160th Reenactment, Historic Port Royal School 100th Anniversary, Fredericksburg Women’s Group, and many more.

Feel More at Home at Home

For many homeowners, updating aspects of the floor plan, landscaping, or décor is a regular part of home maintenance and enjoyment, but far too many homeowners assume that they can’t make similar modifications to the comfort and energy and efficiency of their homes. Thankfully, there is no need to settle!

Comfenergy and its sister company, 3 Pros Basement Systems, were founded to help homeowners achieve these goals. For over ten years, they have been improving quality of life and property values throughout their large service area.

The goal of both companies is to make homes in the Northern Virginia area more comfortable and energy efficient, and to truly solve any air quality and unwanted, crawl space or basement water issues that a home may have. Their mission grew out of the recognition that many home service providers were not offering solutions to actually solve the root causes of many home performance issues. When providers only address symptoms without resolving the underlying problems, it leads to a continued cycle of costly repairs that can cause property owners to eventually just give up.

That is why, after many years in HVAC and home restoration, the founders of Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems stepped into the underserved field of “home science,” and they are passionate about home performance — improving air quality, health, energy efficiency, and even property values for the homeowners they serve. The three co-founders refer to themselves as the “Home Comfort Guys,” and their mission is to “create comfortable, energy efficient, healthy home and work environments by providing value through people, products and processes.” The companies have won numerous awards for their products and services over the last ten years, including being named Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2019 and ranking in the top 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the nation in 2020. The professionals at each company pride themselves on the value they bring and are proud that many of the services they offer pay for themselves within a few years thanks to the energy savings.

That moment when clients can feel and see the difference in their homes is what keeps the team at Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems excited about what they do. They appreciate all the feedback and success stories they hear from clients, and they are always eager to speak with potential new clients about the possibilities for their homes. Marketing Manager Dan Bomar shares that, “Every home in Northern Virginia could benefit from one of the dozens of products and services that we offer.”

For property owners interested in what Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems can do for your home or business, the first step is to visit their website for a free estimate. While on the website, you can scan the full range of products and services they provide as well as view before and after photos, case studies, testimonials, and more.

Comfenergy and 3 Pros Basement Systems employ more than fifty staff members, each of whom exemplifies the company culture of service by volunteering in their Northern Virginia communities: organizations such as rotary clubs, local chambers of commerce, youth sports coaching and sponsorship, local schools, and many more. They are a family- and pet-friendly company. In fact, it’s not unusual to meet staff members’ pets or children when visiting their offices. Often, pets and children are even featured on their websites’ “Meet the Team” pages.

The “Home Comfort Guys” would love to serve your family as well and to help you feel more at home … at home!

Reminders of La Dolce Vita: A Restaurant Review of Orofino

As self-proclaimed aficionados of Italian cuisine, my husband and I were eager to try Orofino, drawn by its reputation for genuine Italian fare. Having spent nearly three years living in Italy, our standards were high, and Orofino did not disappoint.

From the moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted with the warm aromas of traditional Italian cooking and the inviting ambiance of an authentic trattoria or ristorante. The interior exudes charm with exposed brick walls in an upscale but not pretentious manner. The decor was simple and cozy, adding to the atmosphere.

One of Orofino’s standout features is its commitment to showcasing the diverse flavors of Italy’s various regions. This dedication is evident in the restaurant’s meticulously curated menu, which boasts classic Italian staples highlighting each region’s specialties. We were delighted to discover a key on the menu indicating the origin of each dish, allowing us to embark on a stroll down memory lane, recalling our favorite trips to Toscana, Lazio, and Liguria.

To kick off our dining experience, we indulged in a mixed bruschetta antipasti, a delightful assortment of crispy bread topped with an array of fresh, vibrant toppings, ranging from the classic pomodori mix to goat cheese paired with a truffle sauce. Paired with a bold and robust Primitivo from Puglia, the bruschetta set the stage for what was to come—an evening of culinary bliss.

I have an egg allergy, so I typically skip the primi menu (most of the fresh, handmade pasta contains eggs), and my husband has become quite the carbonara snob, so we opted to jump straight to the secondi options. I savored every bite of the tagliata di manzo, a well-seasoned steak cooked to perfection and served alongside prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with patate al forno, a classic staple side dish in Veneto (and most of Northern Italy). My husband indulged in the lamb chops with a delectable glaze and fresh zucchini vegetable medley. Each bite was a nostalgic reminder of the flavors of Italy that we had grown to love.

The service was also exceptional, and our server had excellent recommendations and fantastic wine acumen. Honestly, the one thing missing was the complimentary limoncello that typically accompanied the end of a meal at our favorite local trattorias. While we understood that liquor laws in Virginia may prohibit such gestures, it was a minor detail in an otherwise impeccable dining experience.

For anyone seeking a taste of Italy without the airfare, look no further than Orofino—it’s the real deal.

Sports

For over five decades, the Special Olympics has unified thousands in the spirit of sport and has been a beacon of hope and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In Area 11 of Special Olympics Virginia, which encompasses Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg, this organization has become a lifeline for hundreds of local athletes and their families by offering year-round sports training and competition.

Tim Doyle, Area Coordinator for Special Olympics Area 11, has been intimately involved with the organization for 20 years, 18 of which he has spent leading the local chapter. His journey with Special Olympics began when his son, Matthew, who has Down Syndrome, started participating as an athlete in the Stafford Schools Special Olympics program, which later merged with Area 11.

“While widely recognized as a sports organization, Special Olympics has evolved into so much more,” Tim explains. “Sports are just our vehicle to reach our community and spread our message of unity and inclusion.”

Indeed, Special Olympics has transcended its role as merely a sports organization. It has become the world’s leading healthcare provider for people with intellectual disabilities through its Healthy Athletes initiatives, underscoring its commitment to holistic well-being.

For Tim, the inspiration behind his leadership in the Special Olympics community is deeply personal. “My biggest inspiration is my son Matthew,” he shared.

“Matthew lives, breathes, and sleeps everything Special Olympics,” said Tim. “It has become such an important part of his life not only for the sports he participates in but for the so important social interaction that it breeds.”

And it’s not just Matthew, but thousands like him who have benefitted from the invaluable social interaction that comes along with participating in Special Olympics programs.

The impact of their programs extends far beyond the playing field though. Special Olympics fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment among its athletes, instilling confidence and resilience that transcends sports.

“Our area proudly serves approximately 300 athletes,” Tim said, although that number is down from the 450 athletes they had preCOVID-19, and the group has faced challenges from the pandemic, among them, a decrease in participation.

Despite facing financial challenges, with all local programs required to raise funds independently, Area 11 has found innovative ways to sustain its programs. One such initiative is the annual Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach, where Tim, his team, and their “crazy friends” dive into the Atlantic Ocean to raise funds for Area 11 Special Olympics. Since forming their first Polar Plunge Team in 2007, they have raised over a million dollars, demonstrating the community’s unwavering support for the cause.

Tim’s dedication to the Special Olympics is a testament to his commitment to serving his community. A retired Marine Corps veteran, he has called Stafford home since 1996, along with

his son Matthew, mentioned above, his wife of forty years, Rose, and his daughter, Theresa, who lives in the area as well with her family.

“We are always looking for people to become involved with the Special Olympics,” Tim emphasized. “Whether as a volunteer or participant, we welcome you to our Special Olympics family.”

For those who have yet to experience the transformative power of the Special Olympics, Tim extends an invitation to join their community.

“I encourage you to get involved,” he says. “Our athletes will inspire you, and you’ll become part of our Special Olympics family for life.”

Area 11 Special Olympics is wrapping up their March Madness basketball season and kicking off the spring season, which includes track and field, tennis, aquatics, bowling, softball, and the Young Athlete Program for youth ages 2-7. Volunteers and donations are welcome at any time. Check out www.specialolympicsva. org/rappahannock-region/area-11 for more information and ways to get involved.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Nestled along the beautiful banks of the Rappahannock River, Fredericksburg, Virginia, overflows with history and natural beauty. Attracting many tourists and residents, with its unique nature, it truly is a serene place. With an increasingly modern outlook, it is important to strive each day to preserve the charm of the area so that future generations are able to enjoy the captivating allure of Fredericksburg that we currently relish in.

If one thing is certain, consistently taking small steps will gradually build up to make a large positive impact, and there are a few prominent steps that you can begin to take in order to preserve our beautiful Fredericksburg!

Green Spaces and “Leave No Trace”

Green spaces are areas set aside in an otherwise urban environment for purely recreational purposes. We have many delightful green spaces around our area, from athletic fields at Loriella and Patriot parks, to walking trails at Pratt park, and much more throughout our vast 10.5 square miles.

Taking advantage of these green spaces is important, as the more populated they are, the more likely that they won’t be overtaken by industry. Whether taking children to the park, going camping, or having a picnic in nature, the more involved we are in these green spaces, the better.

However, with this, the “leave no trace” concept strongly comes into play. This motto became prominent in the mid 1900s as industry continued to spike and ecological damage was becoming a common occurrence. It was put in place to encourage an ethic movement in the US to begin to preserve

nature. This motto still stands strong today meaning that we must leave minimal human disruption as we come into contact with nature. This includes, picking up our trash, not harming wildlife or plants, and acting to preserve historical landmarks.

Recycling

As simple as it seems, recycling has a gigantic impact, conserving resources and keeping the environment clean. Setting up a recycling bin for your household can be rather easy, and especially beneficial towards the environment.

Consistent recycling helps with sustainability, as we live in a culture where disposal after use is common. This makes the urgency of raising the standard of recycling an ever-growing importance.

Community Involvement

Becoming actively involved in community activities, especially those taking place outdoors, will make a huge impact on Fredericksburg’s preservation efforts, as residents learn more about the community, become more connected to it, and therefore begin to better strive to preserve its beauty.

Locally, Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation holds many events for all age groups, and a large range of interests. As the weather begins to warm up and we shift into the late Spring, to the left is a list of a few activities that Parks and Recreation will be holding soon.

To find the full list of activities, visit the activities catalog on the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Events website.

Planning for Life After High School

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.” PARENTS

Parents of rising high school juniors, seniors, and the soon to be class of 2024 graduates, this is for you. It seems like yesterday my kids were in elementary school, and now my youngest is in college. I mean where does the time go? What is the plan for life after high school? Have you really talked about it? Below are some things to think about and possibly plan for your students:

Rising Juniors (11th graders)

• Ask your counselor for your grade point average (gpa) and class rank

• Your overall gpa from 9th,10th and 11th grade are what you’re applying to college with, so finish 10th grade strong. It’s not too late.

• Visit colleges in person or virtually, if you haven’t started. This helps narrow down preferences when it’s time to apply. Plus, the admissions personnel will talk about the importance of grades, involvement, etc. It’s a great back up to what you may have said at home but fell on deaf ears.

• Make sure your student is involved in a club, sport,or activity he or she is interested in, and encourage your student to have some leadership experience. He or she can also volunteer, babysit, work, etc. The point is that they do something meaningful with their time.

• Plan out the next two years and know when the Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and SAT exams are.

▷ When are college applications due?

▷ What’s needed for the military if that’s your path?

▷ What jobs or internships are you looking for if you’re going into the workforce?

• The summer after 11th grade is college application time.

• Google ‘What are the prompts for the Common Application?’ See if it’s the same as the year before. Sometimes it is. If this is the case, then your student can work on that before senior year begins.

• If the high school offers a college Bootcamp, attend it with your student.

• Look for college scholarships.

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

Rising Seniors (12th grade)

• Parents, this should be an exciting time for you and your student(s).

• Many colleges have November application deadlines for Early Decision and Early Action opportunities. Look at each college to see what those dates are.

• Some colleges have Rolling Admissions and accept applications as early as July and August which means a decision may be received by August or September.

• Students need to keep their grades up and take the most rigorous classes available to them. Some colleges will resend acceptances if students slack during senior year.

• College tours are informative and allow the student to see and feel if the college is a good fit before they actually attend. It can save you the application fee if they decide it’s not a school they want to attend.

• Set a goal with your student to decide when all applications will be completed. If your student does it early, then he/she can focus on school work and enjoy the many exciting activities that are a part of the senior year experience. Some Regular Decision Application dates are as late as January and February, and decisions don’t come out until March or April.

• Apply, apply, apply for scholarships

• Some private colleges and universities give more money than state colleges and universities and some give enough for it to be the equivalent to an instate college or university. Don’t limit your students’ opportunities because you don’t think you can afford it.

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

Class of 2024: Congratulations!

• Celebrate this milestone with your student. Encourage your student to stay connected to good friends, and to be okay knowing that they may never see some of their classmates again.

• Whatever your student’s path, enjoy the time together. You can help them pay attention to details for upcoming events.

▷ When is onboarding for the new job?

▷ What is the deadline date for the math or composition placement exam?

▷ What is the deadline date to select housing and dining choices for their college?

▷ When does team practice begin?

• Review their social media and ensure they are secure. Colleges, employers, organizations look at social media. Ensure it reflects the best of you and won’t cost you an opportunity.

• As parents, we try our best to know our children. Counselors are asking them what their interests are and what their plans are after high school. It’s a challenging time. It’s an exciting time. It’s time to start talking about it, even if they have no idea. Broad experiences outside of the classroom will help them learn what they like and dislike. Knowing what you dislike is just as important as knowing what you like.I hope you noticed the emphasis on being aware of their social media accounts. Don’t let a bad picture or post affect a future opportunity. Let’s continue to talk to our students and remind them that as parents we’re on their team.

“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

The Gift of HOME

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Home Improvement?” Does it bring a smile with thoughts of endless possibilities to new heights and high hopes, or does it usher in a cringe with visions of an ongoing and expensive “to-do” list? Whatever your reaction, it’s time we look at this topic from a fresh vantage point. Our homes are more than a habitat and much more than a showcase. Our homes are our gathering place, our growing place, our place to connect, rejuvenate, and thrive. No matter the family size, culture, life stage, or circumstance, we must return to nurturing our homes. We must see it as a vessel of something far more valuable than brick and mortar. Home needs to become our happy place again. Not just for ourselves to enjoy but also as a place to share with others.

Where should we begin when we think of making this “gift” to ourselves and others come alive? Is it a newly constructed deck or wrap-around porch where family and friends play games and grill? New siding boasts an inviting color that draws you in and welcomes you home. Would it be a quiet refuge of an edition for a reading room with warm sunbeams dancing through the window panes? A finished basement with a guest bathroom and bedroom would bless all who stay with you. They would never forget a home away from home. Would your kitchen be where memories are made, and tastes savored? Intimate lighting and an inviting fireplace go a long way for relaxation. A lush carpet to bury your toes and earthy hardwood for your furry friend to scamper. Do you desire a primary bedroom that would go beyond your wildest dreams? It all comes down to

what is essential to you. This is your space, your story to create, and with endless inspiration and finite funds, you must define and prioritize your goals.

Once your ambitions are defined and arranged in a hierarchy of absolute wants and dire necessities, look at what can be done now and what might need to wait until later. Shop around and start pricing different companies for the upgrades you long for and the space you need. It is fantastic to get a good deal, but you can’t put a price tag on quality products, excellent craftsmanship, and having done it right the first time. Plan your work and work your plan, but don’t forget to enjoy your current home while dreaming about the look and atmosphere you desire to obtain. During the planning stage, evaluate your living and storage areas and declutter. This assessment of the value of objects we are attached to may be a purging of the soul more than it is of possession. This process will revitalize you and your home. Posting a few more oversized items for sale that no longer match your style or life stage may contribute towards the renovation budget.

Get to know your personal style, not just what the latest home designer or influencer thinks is captivating, but what says, “This is me; come and experience me and stay awhile.” Begin collecting a portfolio of ideas and samples of key pieces. Take photos and capture the process. Great joy comes from progress, not perfection. Behind each change is a tale. What or who sparked your inspiration? Who helped you select the right paint tone, and what adjustments can be made in the future? Ideas will continue to evolve during the process. Let others catch a glimpse of your renovation story. Share your ideas, spark interest in others, and invite collaboration. A knowledgeable sales associate or design specialist, like the team members in our showroom at NK Floors, can accompany you. Allowing others in on the journey may make your ending point more beautiful and meaningful.

If you aspire to unwrap your gift of a home or improve, restore, or embellish the one you have, you can do so with excitement! Home improvement is treating yourself to new experiences, relationships, and connections with those you love the most. Our homes are more than buildings and material things. They are who we are. Start small, dream big! The gift of home is waiting!
