Dear Neighbors of Courthouse,

Welcome to the May issue of Neighbors of Courthouse, where we celebrate the unique stories and contributions of our residents that enrich the fabric of our community. In this edition, we are thrilled to highlight a local family, The Coulters, who have dedicated their lives to finding a cure for epilepsy and providing relief to individuals with HUWE-1. Through their local organization, Louie’s HUWE, named after their son, they have given numerous families facing this rare disease a reason to hope for a brighter tomorrow.

While the Coulter Family shares their story with us, we also explore the heartwarming tale of The Bill Carroll Foundation, a charity dedicated to promoting the importance of arts education and providing inclusive arts programs and instruction to individuals of all abilities.

But that’s not all – this month’s issue is brimming with features on local businesses, high school highlights, and more, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of our lovely neighbors in our area.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors whose generous support makes this magazine possible. Their commitment to our community enables us to continue sharing the stories that matter most.

Do you have a story to share or an idea for a future contribution? We welcome your input and invite you to reach out with your suggestions for upcoming issues.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we hope you enjoy the May issue of Neighbors of Courthouse.

Happy reading,

Mallory Hardgrove

Celebrating Volunteerism & Catalyzing Change: THE COULTER CREW

Nestled in the heart of Embrey Mills, the Coulter family epitomizes warmth, resilience, and community spirit. With Elizabeth and her partner Craig at the helm, alongside their vibrant crew- Louie, Maribel (Belle), Frankie, and Asher - their home resonates with laughter, love, and a shared commitment to making a difference, both within their family and in the wider community.

A Journey of Love and Service

Their story began in Norfolk, where fate brought Elizabeth and Craig together at a homeless picnic, both driven by a desire to serve their community. Little did they know, this chance encounter would blossom into a beautiful partnership spanning 15 years. Reflecting on their journey, Elizabeth fondly recalls their engagement in Virginia Beach, a moment she describes as magical amidst the crashing waves and endless sky.

Their commitment to community involvement runs deep. Whether it’s volunteering with the organization Elizabeth founded for her son, Louie’s HUWE, supporting local schools like Fredericksburg Christian School, or participating in the Stafford Baseball League, the Coulters are always eager to lend a helping hand and foster connections within their neighborhood. They’re also seemingly always on the go!

Despite their busy schedules, the Coulter children thrive in various activities and pursuits. Louie’s fascination with circles reflects his unique perspective, while Frankie and Belle’s love for baseball and dance at Polaris adds rhythm and energy to their household. As for Asher, he brings endless joy and mischief, reminding the family of the beauty of simplicity and spontaneity.

Beyond their local endeavors, the Coulters cherish their travel adventures, with Williamsburg and Virginia Beach ranking among their favorite destinations. Each trip is a chance to bond as a family, create lasting memories, and recharge amidst the beauty of Virginia’s landscapes.

Inspiring Change and Connection

Elizabeth Coulter’s journey with her son Louie, who has a rare genetic mutation called HUWE-1, led her to establish Louie’s HUWE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds for children affected by this condition. Reflecting on Louie’s challenging health journey, Elizabeth explained, “We found out soon after his birth that there was something wrong. He had trouble breathing and was not moving his arms and legs.”

Despite facing numerous diagnoses over the years, including hypotonia, slow growth, autism, cortical visual impairment, and epilepsy, Elizabeth’s determination to find a cure was fueled by a pivotal conversation with Louie’s neurogeneticist. She recalled, “I’ll fund the cure if you can help find the researcher.”

Driven by a commitment to helping children globally affected by HUWE-1, regardless of the severity of their condition, Louie’s HUWE operates under the philosophy of “Rare But Everywhere.”

Elizabeth emphasized, “We want to help every child around the globe with HUWE-1, no matter how severe their variation or how far they are.”

With a focus on funding a drug trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the organization has already met their $250,000 goal. What sets Louie’s HUWE apart is their dedication to ensuring that nearly all funds raised go directly towards finding a cure and that’s now the focus: a cure for epilepsy. The drug trial has begun, and a cure can’t come soon enough. Louie suffers over 100 seizures per day, averaging over 10 seizures an hour. To say the Coulters cannot wait to celebrate a cure would be an understatement.

Inviting Neighbors into the Fold

For the Coulters, living in Embrey Mill isn’t just about finding a place to reside; it’s about building meaningful connections and embracing the spirit of camaraderie that defines their neighborhood. They welcome new neighbors with open arms, encouraging them to get involved and become active participants in their vibrant community. They’ve found solace and joy in their neighbors’ unwavering support, especially during challenging times with their son Louie.

As the Coulter family continues to write their story, their message to their neighbors rings clear: embrace the journey, cherish each moment, and spread kindness wherever you go. With their infectious enthusiasm and tenacious spirit for volunteering, they serve as a shining example of the transformative power of love, connection, and community. In the Coulter household, every day is an opportunity to make a difference, to share joy, and to build a brighter future together.

Hardwood floors exude elegance and timelessness, enhancing the aesthetics and value of any home. However, as years pass, these floors may start to show signs of wear and tear, prompting homeowners to consider their options: refinishing or replacing. Both choices offer distinct advantages and considerations, making it essential to understand the differences between them before making a decision.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Refinishing hardwood floors involves sanding down the existing finish and applying a new coat of stain and sealant. This process revitalizes the appearance of the floors, addressing scratches, stains, and surface imperfections. Here are some key points to consider about refinishing:

• Cost-effectiveness: Refinishing is typically more cost-effective than replacing hardwood floors. It allows homeowners to breathe new life into their existing floors without the expense of purchasing new materials and paying for installation.

• Preservation of Character: One of the significant advantages of refinishing is the preservation of the floor’s original character. Many older hardwood floors possess unique grain patterns and patina that cannot be replicated with new flooring. Refinishing maintains these characteristics while refreshing the surface.

• Minimal Disruption: Unlike the extensive process of replacing hardwood floors, refinishing is less disruptive to the household. It requires less time and generates minimal dust and debris, allowing homeowners to enjoy their refreshed floors sooner.

• Environmental Sustainability: Opting for refinishing aligns with environmentally conscious practices by reducing the need for new materials. It contributes to sustainability efforts by extending the lifespan of existing hardwood floors rather than adding to landfills with discarded flooring materials.

• Limitations: While refinishing is suitable for addressing surface damage and minor imperfections, it may not be effective for severely damaged or structurally compromised floors. In such cases, replacement might be the more practical solution.

Replacing Hardwood Floors

Replacing hardwood floors involves removing the existing flooring entirely and installing new hardwood planks. This option offers a fresh start and allows homeowners to choose different wood species, colors, and finishes. Consider the following aspects of hardwood floor replacement:

• Opportunity for Change: Replacement provides homeowners with the opportunity to update their flooring to better suit their preferences and current interior design trends. They can choose from a wide range of hardwood species, colors, and finishes to achieve the desired look.

• Addressing Structural Issues: In cases where the existing hardwood floors are extensively damaged or structurally unsound, replacement may be necessary to ensure the integrity of the flooring system. This allows for addressing underlying issues and installing a new, sturdy foundation.

• Long-term Investment: While replacing hardwood floors may involve a higher upfront

cost compared to refinishing, it is a long-term investment in the home. High-quality hardwood flooring can last for decades with proper care, providing enduring value and beauty.

• Customization Options: Replacement offers greater customization options, allowing homeowners to tailor the flooring to their specific preferences and requirements. From plank width and length to surface finish and texture, the possibilities are virtually limitless.

• Disruption and Time: It’s important to note that replacing hardwood floors can be a more involved process compared to refinishing, potentially causing more disruption and requiring more time for completion. Homeowners should consider their tolerance for inconvenience when weighing this option.

Ultimately, the decision between refinishing and replacing hardwood floors depends on various factors, including the condition of the existing floors, budget considerations, aesthetic preferences, and long-term goals. While refinishing offers a cost-effective way to refresh the appearance of hardwood floors with minimal disruption, replacing provides an opportunity for a complete transformation and customization.

By carefully evaluating these factors and consulting with flooring professionals, like Pacheco’s Hardwood Floor, homeowners can make an informed decision that best suits their needs and enhances the beauty and value of their home. Mango Tango

SHRIMP TACOS

“Mom, what’s for dinner?” is quite possibly my least favorite phrase. I spend too much time coming up with grocery lists, meal plans, etc., so when I find something quick and easy, I have to share it. We typically keep some frozen shrimp ready to rock in the freezer, and we just happened to have some taco toppings ready to go and on hand, so I threw the following together recently, and I was pleasantly surprised. There’s minimal preparation to this one, and I may try it again soon with feta cheese as a bonus, but here’s what I did with minimal effort.

Ingredients:

• red onion (pickled)

• your tortillas of choice

• mango salsa of choice (I tried the Great Value Sweet Heat Mango Salsa, and I was pleasantly surprised)

• shrimp (thawed)

Directions:

• avocado

• Roma tomatoes

• lettuce

• your favorite shrimp seasoning (I used Slap Ya Mama, as it’s a staple in my home)

1. Before cooking, thaw the shrimp and pickle the red onion. I prefer to thinly slice my onions and use white wine vinegar, a splash of red wine vinegar, and a couple of teaspoons of sugar for pickling. Set aside in a small bowl for 25-30 minutes.

2. Sauté the shrimp in a medium or large pan. Lightly or heavily season the shrimp with your favorite seasoning. I used Slap Ya Mama, giving it a few generous shakes each time I flipped the shrimp. When it’s entirely pink, you’re good to go.

3. While you’re cooking the shrimp or before that, prepare your toppings. I chose to smash some avocado and use it as a base on my tortillas, dice some Roma tomatoes, and add some shredded lettuce. I added the pickled red onion and topped it off with the mango salsa.

4. Construct your tacos however you like and enjoy!

Like I said, I’d add some crumbled feta next time, but this was quite tasty for a quick meal, so I used the toppings I had on hand. If I had time, I’d marinate the shrimp or try a different glaze or sauce to switch it up from the mango, but that store-bought salsa was clutch and did the work for me. Feel free to get creative.

Fahrenheit 132: A Carnivore’s Dream in Fredericksburg

In the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, Fahrenheit 132 stands as a culinary oasis, offering an unparalleled dining experience that transcends mere sustenance and is every carnivore’s dream. Arguably the best restaurant in town, Fahrenheit 132 captivates patrons with its exquisite ambiance, impeccable service, and a menu that pays homage to the finest ingredients and culinary craftsmanship. Stepping into Fahrenheit 132 is akin to embarking on a culinary journey, and our recent visit was nothing short of exceptional. Celebrating my husband’s birthday with friends who had journeyed from D.C. added an extra layer of joy and festivity to the evening, making it all the more memorable.

From the moment we were greeted by the warm and attentive staff to the last bite of dessert, every moment was infused with a sense of indulgence and delight. Our server, attentive to every detail, made sure to accommodate my egg allergy, ensuring that I could fully partake in each course.

Our culinary voyage began with a tantalizing array of appetizers, including the freshest oysters imaginable– a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing the highest-quality ingredients. I was starving, too, so we opted for the truffle French fries as an extra appetizer, and they did not disappoint. Being a native of Pittsburgh, where we adorn every sandwich, salad, and any other dish you can imagine with French fries, my standards are high when it comes to my favorite potato varietal. They were amazing. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, the truffle and Parmesan were the chef’s kiss!

Next, two of us opted for a Caesar salad, while two (myself included) chose the French onion soup, a classic dish served at the perfect temperature. I often find that French onion soup comes out much too hot because the cheese traps everything underneath. Not this one; the onions were perfectly caramelized, and the melted cheese sat on top of the bread, not the entire bowl, ensuring that neither of us burned the roof of our mouths and could eat the soup immediately.

For the main course, we opted for the pièce de résistance: the tender, aged wagyu tomahawk steak. Sourced from the finest producers and expertly prepared by the chefs, each bite was a revelation of flavor and texture. Cooked to perfection, with a beautifully charred exterior giving way to a melt-in-your-mouth, pink interior, it was a carnivore’s dream come true.

Accompanying our steak was a selection of delectable sides, including shaved brussel sprouts, sauteed green beans, creamy mashed potatoes, and everyone’s favorite: truffle mac and cheese. Each side dish was seasoned to perfection, but the mac and cheese stood apart, with the aroma of truffles permeating every bite.

To complement our meal, we perused Fahrenheit 132’s extensive wine list and settled on a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Poliziano-- one of our favorite vintners from our years living in Italy. Its velvety texture, full body, moderately floral, and subtle black cherry notes perfectly complemented our steak, enhancing each bite and elevating the entire experience.

As the evening drew to a close, the chef surprised me with a special dessert to accommodate my egg allergy. A refreshing sorbet, accompanied by fresh fruit and whipped cream, was a delightful end to the meal. The gesture, along with a wax-stamped birthday card, candle, and heartfelt message for my husband, encapsulated the hospitality and commitment to going above and beyond that defines Fahrenheit 132. Our friends shared the limoncello cake, and we all left with some doggy bags.

From the impeccable service to the unforgettable flavors, every aspect of our dining experience had been meticulously crafted to perfection. Without a doubt, Fahrenheit 132 stands atop the list of fine dining experiences in Fredericksburg. I’d recommend celebrating your next milestone there.

The Kid’s Ultimate Guide to Mother’s Day

Spring has officially sprung, and along with the blossoming flowers and warmer weather, Mother’s Day is now upon us. One of the first Mother’s Day celebrations was celebrated in Ancient Greece thousands of years ago. The United States has now adopted and molded the celebratory tradition into American culture, celebrating Mother’s Day annually on the second Sunday of May.

As a kid who is most grateful to their mother figures, it can sometimes be hard to come up with the “perfect gift.” But one thing is certain: the gifts mothers love the most come straight from their loved ones’ hearts.

Crafty Creations

Whether making a creative card that expresses your immense gratitude or creating another medium of art, this craft will undoubtedly be a valuable keepsake for your mother for years.

A fun way to start is with handprint art! You can trace your hand into a drawn bouquet or stamp your hand onto paper with the paint of your mother’s favorite color. You can decorate it with stickers, little doodles, and a lovely handwritten message. You can also create a personalized card decorated with glitter, paint, stickers, and anything else you can find! Be sure to include a sweet message and maybe even a silly or punny phrase such as “Olive, you mom!”

Another simple but heartfelt idea is creating a coupon book for your mom, including tickets she can turn in for little prizes. For example, some ideas may include “a free hug” or “movie night of your choice.”

Photo Montage

Something else filled with memories that a mother would enjoy is a photo montage! This could be done in a physical manner or even virtually.

You could compile a scrapbook of memories conveyed through photos and other decorations or use a modge-podge to create and frame a unique craft of photos you have put together.

You could create an online scrapbook or a video montage of past memories, photos, and videos virtually. Many apps allow you to compile photos into a video, and you could always add one of your mother’s favorite songs to the background!

Creative Cooking

Another way to make Mother’s Day memorable is to prepare a special meal or treat for your mother. Whether preparing breakfast in bed, a picnic lunch, or a sweet dessert, getting creative in the kitchen will surely bring your mother loads of delight. There’s nothing better than waking up to the smell of an excellent, home-cooked breakfast and having it delivered straight to your bed. Whipping up pancakes and eggs is simple for a kid, and the mother will most definitely love the treat!

You could always find a blanket, pack a picnic basket with your mom’s favorite sandwich, snacks, and drinks, and set up the backyard for a beautiful outdoor meal, basking in the sunshine!

Lastly, baking your mother a sweet treat would surely bring her a ton of happiness! If you deliver her some homemade cookies or a fresh-baked cake, that would surely make her day!

A Spouse’s Guide to Mother’s Day

For moms of teens or adult children, the focus shifts to spending quality time together. Whether going out for a leisurely brunch, taking a scenic hike, or simply enjoying a heartfelt conversation, what matters most is the opportunity to connect and bond. Pro tip: Get in some good “Proof of Mom” pictures while you’re out and about-- this applies to moms of younger kids, too.

And moms of adult children and empty-nesters would love a surprise visit! Even if you can’t be together in person, a thoughtful video call or virtual chat can make her feel loved and appreciated.

I asked my Facebook friends to test my theory, and it’s credible. Here are just some of the 48 responses I received:

With Mother’s Day fast-approaching, I’m here to help the spouses out. Now, I am definitely biased, and you’ll notice a trend in what moms really want for Mother’s Day. I’m sure there’s some mathematical equation that I could use, taking into account variables such as the number of children and how old the children are, but I taught English and not math, so this will have to do.

If you and your spouse share small, tiny humans, your wife needs and wants a break! Trust me. As the sole parent most of the time (thanks, Army) and mother of essentially Irish triplets, I am spent. I am touched out and exhausted. I love my children, but a weekend away from them would be the most glorious thing right now. (Again, I have three small children, and I’m solo-parenting often, so please don’t judge-- we as moms get enough of that).

For moms of young children or those with more than one child, the best gift you can give is often some well-deserved personal space. Even if you’re “ballin’ on a budget,” taking the kids away so mom can sleep– uninterrupted– would be magical for some. Moms juggle a multitude of responsibilities every day, and sometimes, all they crave is a moment of quiet and solitude. Consider taking over the childcare duties for the day-- or if you can’t do something on Mother’s Day, gift her a special day in the near future to look forward to-- sometimes just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and a break coming is both a sigh of relief as well as an extra motivator. This allows her to relax and recharge without interruptions-- and without hearing “Mom! I want” or “Mom, can you ____?” 232 times a day. Seriously, I’ve heard “Mom” approximately 52 times in the ten minutes I’ve been writing this so far.

There was a slight difference between moms who work outside the home and moms who work within the home-- whether they work remotely or as stay-at-home moms. Those who do work outside of the home would like to spend some part of the day with their children, but do not let mom do ANY of the planning or put any of that responsibility on her-- that just adds more to her to-do list and the mental load. (This includes getting your mom her gift for Mother’s Day without your wife buying it for you.)

• “You nailed it. I asked to go to a fancy hotel alone and to only have to make decisions for myself.” (One child, under one year old)

• “I want freedom to buy an expensive thing for myself, I want brunch food (that I don’t have to cook), and I don’t want any fighting.” (Two children, pre-teens)

• “24 hours of someone catering to my every need with plenty of sleep and me not making any decisions or answering any questions.” (Three children, ages six and under)

• “15 minutes of peace without cleaning up a mess at this stage would be amazing, but that spa day... I feel ya!” (Twins, toddler age)

• “Bye!” (Two children, 6 and 4 years old)

• “When my kids were younger, my dream was to just have a hotel room alone for the night, order room service, and chill. Now that my kids are older (14 and 16), a nice lunch or game day just hanging out with them would be nice. But I still don’t want to have to really plan or cook. I do that the other 364 days of the year.”

Others who are still able to visit with their mothers and grandmothers appreciate that fleeting time, but they want a short break for part of the day, so schedule the grandparent visits and then plan dinner or plan a brunch and then make an afternoon visit.

One common thread: No matter the era of motherhood your spouse is in, it is a break from the mental load. This means they want to avoid thinking or making any decisions. Take the initiative to plan the day, whether organizing a special breakfast in bed, arranging a relaxing spa day, or preparing a picnic in the park. By taking the initiative and handling the details, you give her the gift of not worrying about anything.

Ultimately, the key to a successful Mother’s Day is to tailor the celebration to fit the preferences and desires of the mom in your life-- and tailor them to the era of motherhood she’s in-- her wants will differ depending on this. Whether providing space for relaxation, easing the mental load, or simply enjoying each other’s company, your thoughtfulness and effort will undoubtedly make her day extra special.

Oh, and no mother wants to cook on Mother’s Day. You’re welcome.

EMPOWERING THROUGH MUSIC AND ART: THE BILL CARROLL FOUNDATION

In the heart of Fredericksburg, the Bill Carroll Foundation shines brightly as a beacon of hope, inclusion, and creativity. Founded by CEO and visionary Bill Carroll, this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is dedicated to providing inclusive arts programs and instruction to individuals of all abilities, focusing on veterans and those with disabilities.

“Our philosophy is to guide more people to experience the arts and celebrate music and its education in communities across our country, starting in our own backyard,” Bill explained. Through advocacy and community outreach, the foundation also strives to support schools and organizations in promoting the importance of arts education.

A Fusion of Passion and Purpose

For Bill Carroll, music and education have always been intertwined. With a background in the music and production industry and his experience as a counselor for individuals with special needs, Bill recognized the transformative power of the arts in enriching lives and building communities.

“I come from a line of regular and special needs teachers in my immediate and extended families,” Bill shared. “Then I, too, got certified as a counselor for Special Needs people and even worked in a group home for a few years. Then, becoming a professional Audiovisual Engineer and teacher, these two worlds collided when I realized I needed to put them together somehow.”

“I’ve been in the music and production industry most of my life,” Bill said. “Then, just five years ago, I created my Foundation, which literally brought these two worlds together, and to me, it seemed a no-brainer.”

Empowering Through Inspiration

The driving force behind Bill’s dedication to the foundation lies in the moments of inspiration he witnesses firsthand.

“My biggest inspiration is when I experience seeing someone with special needs pick up an instrument and then start playing it like they were practicing for years,” Bill shared. “This inspires me to not only help and guide them to greater, more refined skills with their amazing talent but makes me more humble in everything I do.”

Bill’s journey with music is something he’s always envisioned, literally.

“I once told one of my teachers that I ‘see’ sounds in colors,” he recalls. To this day, while I’m in a recording studio working on a sound project, seeing those sounds, I can effectively edit and manipulate the audio without even continuing to use my ears to edit intently but by seeing the colors and looking at the waveform of audio.”

Spreading Joy Through Innovation

As the Bill Carroll Foundation continues to expand its reach, Bill is excited to unveil the IMERS project (“Immersive Mobile Educational Recording Studio”) for Musicians with Disabilities.

“It’s time to share it with the world,” Bill declared. “The neighboring counties’ school systems have contacted me, and we’re working on having them utilize my mobile classroom/studio for the Special Needs students of each and every school that needs it.”

The impact of the foundation extends far beyond the realm of arts education, touching the lives of individuals in profound ways. Bill shared the story of a young man with autism who discovered his musical genius through the foundation’s programs, culminating in a full-blown musical production that showcased his talent and creativity:

“There was this 24-year-old boy with autism who was musically and naturally a genius at it, in my opinion,” Bill said. “He was involved with Step-VA, a local theatrical organization that puts on productions of all sizes specifically for kids with disabilities.” Through mentorship and support, this young man showcased his musical talents and gained confidence and independence, inspiring everyone around him.

Looking to the Future with Hope

As the Bill Carroll Foundation embarks on its next chapter of growth and service, it invites the community to support its mission.

“With the completion of our IMERS project, we’re now able to advocate not only for individuals with disabilities but also for the schools offering

tools and resources that validate the importance of music in our schools,” Bill emphasized.

For Bill Carroll, the journey is far from over. Despite facing life-long disabilities and health issues, he remains unwavering in his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

“The programs we offer, the professional services, and the Mobile Unit are for hire for anyone who needs its services and functions for their event or show. It’s fully capable of recording audio from ANY source, whether a fullblown concert or another kind of event,” Bill explained.

“We can use the studio for multi-camera operations with video production. It’s a master editing suite for audio and video. There’s going to be Virtual Reality inside it. It’s a classroom. It’s a recording studio for any musician to practically play and record any instrument. There’s so much that this mobile unit is capable of, and then all of our professional services that go along with it.”

Making Music Together

In addition, Bill started a record label attached to the foundation for all of their musicians called the Groove Factory. “We’re a full-functioning Audio-

visual Production Company utilizing technicians, admin, and musicians with any sort of disability. We consistently need Volunteers and people to help with everything we do and to mentor and teach.”

Bill said if anyone wants their services at an event, “Just ask! We’d love to help create an amazing time for your guests, possibly show off our mobile studio, and have people experience it a bit. It really is epic!”

Through his foundation, Bill Carroll has created a legacy of empowerment, inspiring individuals to embrace their passions, overcome challenges, and unleash their full potential. As the foundation continues to flourish, it is a testament to the enduring power of music, art, and compassion to transform lives and uplift communities.

“Together,” Bill said, “Let us create a world where every voice is heard, and every talent is celebrated.”

Colonial Forge High School Highlights

Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge junior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.

Colonial Forge Presents “Alice in Wonderland”

Colonial Forge debuted its musical production of “Alice in Wonderland” on April 12th.

Starring as Alice, sophomore Ashley Barnum took to the stage with her jaw-dropping performance. Barnum has been acting and doing theater since she was twelve and acting with Colonial Forge since her freshman year last year. Ashley put on an excellent performance and was able to embody the beloved childhood character. Barnum’s role as the lead as an underclassman was surprising, though it proved to be a great choice.

“I really wasn’t expecting it. But I’m super grateful that I got to have this experience with everyone. It’s been a really fun role to play,” Barnum said.

The atmosphere was booming as the actors took their bows and greeted their many family and friends awaiting them off stage. Hannah Yosef, a junior who played the role of the Duchess, put on one of my favorite performances of the night. Her comedic timing was spot-on, and her vocals were out of this world.

Yosef shared her experiences with playing her character: “It was definitely a very different role. I’ve never played such a mean character before. So it was a lot of exploring.”

Thanks to the support of her fellow cast members and faculty, she was able to make the best of this. “Thankfully, I had a nice director that let me experiment with it and play around with it, so I was very comfortable by the time I had to perform.”

Although there were some nerves amongst the cast, as there usually are during events like these, it wasn’t evident, and it seemed like it came as second nature for most.

“I’m always nervous at first, but towards the end and middle, things just start happening. You kind of go on autopilot mode,” Barnum shared.

Ayami Lilie Donald, a senior who took on the role of the Cheshire Cat, also experienced something similar. “I usually get nervous right before I go on stage. But once I get that first line in, all the nerves go away.”

Donald seemed very natural and fluid on the stage, and her lines were delivered with ease. Her attitude towards the role explained this clearly.

“I was honestly comfortable with the role. I was surprised when I got it, but then once the director explained that he thought I was kind of, naturally, like the Cheshire Cat in a way, I could embrace the role and fully become a part of it.”

From the costumes to the acting to the set, “Alice in Wonderland” was a showstopping experience.

North Stafford High School Highlights

Ready, Set, Prom: Getting Ready for Prom at North Stafford

This month, North Stafford is thrilled to announce their annual Prom, themed “Once Upon a Time,” drawing inspiration from Disney movies and all things magical. At North Nation, prom holds special significance, as only seniors and juniors are permitted to attend. But it’s not just about attendance; at North Stafford, we go all out with decorations and preparations. The buzz surrounding prom has been palpable since our return from spring break in March. Everyone is gearing up, searching for the perfect dresses, shoes, suits, and accessories.

“I am excited to see my friends in their outfits,” exclaimed Sarayah Buckland, a high school senior. Administrative assistant Lisa Zawoiski chimed in, expressing her anticipation: “For me, what makes me excited about the prom is seeing all the students dressed up! Just seeing how they smile from ear to ear coming through the door and dressed to perfection! From the fresh, stylish haircuts on the guys to the hairstyles on the girls and their nails and makeup done, to the perfect dress—they all show such confidence about themselves and they really do present the best version of themselves on that night.”

Prom holds particular importance for seniors like Leah Fralin, who shared her excitement: “It is my final chance to connect with my peers.”

While prom is the highlight of the year, some students who have never attended before harbor fears. In a poll I conducted among juniors and seniors who did not attend prom last year, 70% of North Stafford students cited bad music as their biggest

concern. However, at North Nation, we strive to make events like these enjoyable and engaging, ensuring students feel appreciated for their hard work and effort.

Following the challenges posed by COVID-19, numerous students grappled with attendance and motivation issues, with a few even dropping out. However, this year has witnessed a remarkable turnaround among North’s student body. Attendance rates have surged, chronic absenteeism has dwindled, amplifying the anticipation surrounding this year’s prom.

“I think what makes each prom different from year to year is the themes that students come up with and where we decide to hold it. Year to Year, it is different and always great. The students work well together by choosing a theme and what they want that vision to look like and then making it become a reality. Sometimes it is not really about where you have it, but it is taking the theme and making it seem real through decorations and the feeling you experience while at prom,” shared Lisa Zaiwoiski.

North Nation has united to make this Prom a night to remember. Special thanks to Ms. Kathryn Barbarczuk for hosting and coordinating prom this year, along with the rest of the faculty and the wonderful students who contributed to making this event possible.

“I have volunteered in preparing for prom and it is such a fun experience. I enjoy the people I collaborate with and share creative opinions,” Leah Fralin said. She’ll look forward to the memories made as well.

“My favorite part about prom is the memories you make whether it is getting ready or eating at 1 am after, they all make a memory,” she said.

North Nation eagerly awaits to present one of the best nights ever, its “Once Upon a Time” Theme Prom on May 4th.*

*Note: Our magazine deadline was April 15, prior to prom on May 4.

TIPS from a Local Superintendent

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Thomas W. Taylor, Superintendent of Stafford County Public Schools. I asked Dr. Taylor if he could give two tips to parents, what would they be? His response is below.

TIP 1:

“Get smart on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. Find out what tools your kids are using for AI and have a discussion with them.”

TIP 2:

“Make sure you have a relationship with your kids’ teacher.”

Uplifting the Women of Stafford

Tayler Tanks is currently a junior honors student at Mountain View High School. She boasts a 4.0 GPA and is extremely active in the Stafford community. She plans to become a lawyer after high school and is excited to bring readers of Stafford Living the highlights about Mountain View.

With so much recent attention on women’s history, I wanted to shine a light on an incredible event that uplifts the fantastic women of Stafford: Central VA’s Most Influential Women Banquet.

Three individuals in Stafford, Michele Riddick, Vernon Green, and Garry Holland, who all have founded either businesses or nonprofits in the area, came together to establish the event.

These exceptional leaders in their own fields felt that the Stafford community needed a place to honor and recognize the wonderful women of Stafford. Together, these individuals and their organizations, Riddick’s Entertainment & Events, G3 Community Services, and #ENOUGH, combined their efforts and established an annual event to honor and “celebrate the phenomenal women who are making an indelible mark on our community.”

“As co-founders of the event, we work continuously to expand the reach of the event and increase the prestige associated with being an honoree,” Holland explained. “Additionally, I’ve overseen the impartial and autonomous Selection Committee process every year.”

These women are chosen through a committee that is formed every year. The members of the committee are culturally and racially diverse and have all different backgrounds. The organization is promoted through various social media platforms and accepts nominations through an online link each year.

Once nominations close, the committee reviews all of the candidates using a rubric so that there’s an objective rating for each nominee. Then the committee reviews the overall scores and reviews the selections. After all of the nominees have been selected, it is time for the banquet.

Keynote speaker for this year’s event was Congresswoman and Virginia Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger. Emmy

Award-winning news manager Terri Toliver served as the emcee of the prestigious event.

The banquet also showcased numerous local business owners, artists, and community members. Together, Riddick, Green, and Holland had a vision to create something that was empowering to the community, and that is exactly what they have accomplished with the Most Influential Women of Central Virginia.

“When it comes to influential women, there are so many amazing women in the community, and I am so honored to be recognized as one of them,” said Dr. Felisha Kimble, a past recipient of the award. “The men and women in front and behind the scenes of this organization are truly why it has flourished the way it has.”

The winners of the 2024 Annual Central VA Most Influential Women’s Banquet, held on March 2, included the following incredible women: LaToya Benton, Carylee Carrington, Yolondria Carter-Dixon, Meghan Cotter, Elaine Crocker, Kim Cummings, Pamela Curtis, Palinda Gaines, Mary Katherine Greenlaw, Janette Holland, Mishelle Krogstad, and Gigi McMillan. Congratulations to these amazing women, they have continued to uplift the comunity and ensure that their work is not finished.

“I felt honored and humbled to be one of the women among all of the women selected this year,” Janette Holland said. “The things that they’ve done and accomplished… I was just overall honored to be selected.”

Riddick, Green, and Holland are breaking down barriers and societal norms and empowering women across the region through this organization. Although this organization is still relatively new, they have made drastic efforts to uplift the women in our community, and I have no doubt that they will not continue to thrive and prosper in the many years to come; you will be hearing their names often.

Inspiration for the Class of ‘24

It’s that time when teachers, parents, and students anticipate the close of another school year. For some of us, it marks the commencement of a new era. It is a time for celebrating the accomplishments and future dreams of our seniors. As a mom of nine, with two of my own children graduating, I wish to share some inspiration with our dear graduates.

1. You are valued and loved. You are a unique masterpiece. You are accepted and loved unconditionally. Someone just like you has never been and never will be.

2. You have a purpose. You were placed here for such a time as this.

3. Do the next thing. The next few years are stepping stones. There is no need to have your entire life figured out. Invest in yourself physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Develop your abilities, grow in weaknesses, and fine-tune your strengths.

4. Serve others. There is nothing more fulfilling in life than making a difference in another person’s life. You could be the answer to someone’s need. Use your time, gifts, and talents to bless others. Give expecting nothing in return. Invest eternally. Giving is the reward.

5. Learn from mistakes. Allow your mistakes and the mistakes of others to make you better, not bitter. Wisdom is born out of failure, and failure is not your final destination. Get up, adapt, and try again.

6. Life is a vapor; make it count. Life is not a one-track raceway. It is like a garden in which we live by the principle of sowing and reaping. What seeds will you plant in the next year, five years, or ten years? And what do you hope to reap from the seeds planted? How do you plan on nurturing the garden of your life? Do you have a supportive community to help you reap the garden you envision? Allow wisdom and sound counsel to help guide you in this process. Refrain from wasting precious time and energy tending to seeds that will not reap a lasting harvest. Life goes by so quickly. Like vapor, it appears for a moment and is gone. What will last beyond your time here on earth? Plant it, water it, invest in it, reap it. It’s worth it!

Seniors of 2024, you did it! We are with you, we are for you, and we believe you are ready to make a lasting impact in your community and in the lives of others!

SPRING

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

Nothing says “Spring” like cherry blossoms and a dust mop. Spring cleaning is as much a home improvement as a new deck or floor. It is essential. Many get lost in the enormity of the task. Keep it simple and break it down into doable steps. Plan a spring-cleaning schedule to accomplish your goals for the next days or weeks. Include family members in tasks and make it a goal!

1

Inside out. Decide to begin with the indoor cleaning first. This is where we spend the majority of our time. An organized, sanitary space allows for peace and tranquility. Clear out items that no longer are of use. Assess an item to determine if it brings joy and is used often. Clear out closets, drawers, storage rooms, and cluttered spaces. Even if you accomplish cleaning one item a day, that is progress! Children can go through toys and make piles to give away. Teens can sort through clothes, books, and collections, wipe out cabinets, clean windows, and share in tasks. Work through each room, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and garage. Outside, pressure wash siding and decks and do simple landscaping. A little goes a long way for curb appeal.

Top to bottom. When cleaning indoors, think of cleaning from a high-to-low, top-to-bottom approach. Dust lighting and light fixtures, wipe crown molding,

clean windows, wash walls, dust, and polish furniture, clean upholstered furniture, vacuum carpets, and area rugs, wash hard surface flooring, and wipe baseboards. Be sure to use the correct cleaning products to clean effectively without causing damage to surfaces. Encore by COREtec is a safe solution for a luxury vinyl plank available at NK Floors. The neutral pH removes dirt and grime and is compatible with hard surfaces, including hardwood, ceramic, laminate, and resilient floors.

Maintenance. After the time and work invested, maintain it! Following the timeless saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” will help keep your living space clean. Design a duties list for you, your partner, or the family. Share tasks and make it fun. If your profession keeps you busy, enlist help to keep the house tidy. Hire a cleaning service for a monthly deep clean or even a weekly or biweekly clean. It will be money well spent while buying time with those you care about the most.

Spring cleaning is refreshing! When consistently maintained, it is a game-changer.

Bottle Cap Soda

Flower Wreath

To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome.

Materials:

• Soda bottle caps (about 14 caps)

• 1 (6-inch) embroidery hoop

This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed.

• Purple, yellow and white paint

Directions:

• Paint brush

• Different colored ribbons cut into (6-inch lengths)

• Hot glue

Step 1: Paint all the bottle caps white as a primer. Allow them to dry completely.

Step 2: Paint 7 bottle caps yellow and 7 bottle caps purple. Allow them to dry completely and then add a second coat.

Step 3: Once the paint is dry, paint the sides of the caps with a darker or lighter shade of purple and yellow to resemble the center of a flower (as shown in the picture). Allow it to dry.

Step 4: Cut your ribbons into 6-inch lengths.

Step 5: Use hot glue to attach 6 yellow bottle caps together to form a flower. Repeat the same process with the purple caps.

Step 6: Glue your flowers onto the embroidery hoop.

Step 7: Tie your ribbons around the hoop.

Step 8: Tie a string to the top of the hoop for hanging.

Voilà!
