Dear Neighbors of Chancellorsville,

We have a jam-packed issue for you this month, and it just so happens to be my favorite month of the year! Not only is it my birthday month and Women’s History Month, but March includes my all-time favorite sports event: March Madness! Our local Special Olympics athletes will be wrapping up their own madness as well, and you’ll get to read all about that amazing organization as we spotlight them in our charity feature this month. Shout out to the amazing volunteers who help with Area 11 Special Olympics and all of the incredible athletes who participate.

Speaking of incredible, you’ll have the privilege of reading about Karie Owens as she retells a near-death experience that is truly incredible. She and her husband, Nathan, and their children grace our cover this month, and you’ll be amazed with their story of faith and resilience. Another resilient group, Beauty for Ashes is featured as well, as our student intern Julia beautifully informs us of all the good that organization does in our community for women and their children.

It is Women’s History Month, after all, and you know we love our history in Virginia. Local author Malanna Henderson highlights The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild, a relatively new organization founded by Yvette Blake. These women embrace different personas as they perform as historical figures throughout the area, so you’ll learn about some incredible women in history, too.

Once again, I’m overjoyed to share these stories with you, along with some great advice and tips from local businesses, our high school highlights, and a few business profiles on some of our newest sponsors. You’ll also notice some other fun surprises this month– and it might even make you hungry.

We’ll be looking to feature some more local restaurants and possibly even a local food guide, but we need some help from you. What are your favorite local spots? We want to hear from you. Feel free to send me an email (mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com) with your favorite restaurants and more. If you know of a business, a friend, or a family we should be featuring within these pages, tell us about them!

As always, thank you to our incredible business partners and sponsors, and thank you, readers, for supporting them!

Happy reading,

KITCHEN TUNE-UP FREDERICKSBURG & STAFFORD: CRAFTING DREAM KITCHENS WITH CARE AND INTEGRITY

Standing for excellence in kitchen remodeling, Kitchen Tune-Up is a realized dream for three local brothers. Owned and operated by brothers Zach, Matt, and Jake Lethbridge, the company offers services tailored to fit customers’ budgets and needs, including cabinet wood reconditioning, painting, redooring, refacing, and new cabinetry installation.

The story of Kitchen Tune-Up is one of a collective dream and shared passions. Established in July 2021, the business was born from the brothers’ desire to build something together and positively impact their community. Each brother brings their unique skill set and past experiences to the table, seeing kitchen remodeling as an exciting opportunity to serve the residents of Fredericksburg and Stafford.

“At our core, we believe in treating our customers’ and their homes with the same level of care, respect, and integrity as if they were our own,” said Zach. “We strive to find the best solution for the homeowner, ensuring their satisfaction and peace of mind.”

For the Lethbridge brothers, Kitchen Tune-Up is more than just a business; it’s a family affair built on a shared sense of purpose. “Despite the inevitable challenges of running a family-owned business, we enjoy working with each other and the Kitchen Tune-Up team,” Jake explained. “When we were growing up, the kitchen was the place where we always came together for dinner and shared about our day. I think it’s because of the value we place on that time that we find fulfillment in helping people make their kitchens work for their unique needs and be a place where they can gather as family.”

Their commitment to serving the community extends beyond their business operations. The brothers deeply support young adults and aspiring entrepreneurs through their partnership with Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) Career & Technical Education (CTE) Program.

“We believe in the CTE’s mission and strongly believe in the importance of highlighting the value of the trades to our local communities and country as a whole. One way we show support is through the ‘SCPS CTE Student of the Month’ Program,’” Matt said. “Every month Kitchen Tune-Up and CTE, through social media and the radio on B101.5, highlight a student that has gone above and beyond during their studies.”

The Lethbridge brothers emphasized that they have been fortunate to hire several of these highly skilled professionals who have undergone such training in the trades, ensuring that they possess the expertise needed to excel in their role.

“Several employees have been truly integral to the company’s growth and have in many ways even become like family,” said Zach. “Their commitment to continuous learning and mastery of their craft is evident in the exceptional quality of work they deliver, making them an invaluable asset to our company.”

Aside from being veterans themselves, the brothers have also dedicated themselves to fostering a community that values and supports the contributions of other veterans. Their commitment to hiring veterans is centered on not only recognizing the unique skills, discipline, and dedication they bring to the workplace, but also contributing to the well-being and prosperity of the veteran community.

Kitchen Tune-Up’s commitment to excellence and community involvement has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, the brothers were honored with the prestigious Franchisee of the Year award by the International Franchise Association (IFA), recognizing their dedication to the trades and support for the veteran community.

“We are proud to be recognized for our efforts, but our greatest reward comes from the satisfaction of our customers and the positive impact we make in our

community– both the veteran community and our local community,” said Matt.

As they continue to grow and expand their business, the Lethbridge brothers remain grateful for the unwavering support of their parents.

“We are where we are today because of our parents,” said Jake.

“We are blessed and fortunate to have been raised by them and are here in this community and in business together because of their love, sacrifice, and guidance,” added Zach.

If you’re out and about in Fredericksburg or Stafford, don’t be afraid to say ‘Hello’ to these gentlemen or their families. “We truly make the work day fun by treating our customers like they are part of the Lethbridge family… the Kitchen Tune-Up family,” said Matt.

If you’re in the market for a kitchen remodel or quick “tune-up,” give the Lethbridge brothers a call at Kitchen Tune-Up.

Well, needless to say, Nathan did not forget about it. He and Karie became fast friends and were married on May 7, 2004. The couple has been blessed with nine children since, including two sets of twins: Elisabeth, 18, Summerly, 17, Nathan Jr., 16, Daniel, 16, Jeremiah 15, Victoria, 13, Anna 6, Nehemiah 4, and Joshua, 4. From the time Nathan and Karie were married, they served together in their community and ministry.

“This is where we thrived,” Karie said, “and when our children came, we continued to serve as a family.”

In 2011, Nathan and Karie moved to Cameroon, West Africa, as missionaries, with six children (at the time) who were ages nine months to six years old. In the terrain of Mount Cameroon, amidst the vibrant culture, they planted roots of hope and faith.

“It was in Africa that we learned people all over the world are in need, and we gave our hearts to serving them,” Karie explained.

However, the path was not without obstacles. Karie battled tropical illnesses, teetering on the brink of death in a foreign hospital room. Yet, in her darkest hour, she found solace in her unwavering faith, entrusting her life to a higher power.

“My illness was so severe that I was facing multiple-organ failure and was life-flighted from Cameroon to France, then back to the States,” she explained. “It was there, in the African jungle, almost at death’s door, that I felt the strongest in my faith. I said goodbye to Nathan and my six young children in that small, third-world hospital room.” She kissed each of them, she thought, for the last time, knowing that her life was in God’s hands.

The Owens Family:

A Testament to Resilience Rooted in Faith

In the tapestry of life, resilience is the thread that holds families together, weaving tales of triumph over adversity. Meet the Owens family, whose story is a testament to unwavering faith and unyielding determination in the face of challenges.

“If you wanted to use one word to describe us, it would be resilient,” explained Karie Owens. “But,” she added, “it is not resilience that comes from our own strength but from our faith.”

The Owens family– all eleven of them– radiates resilience in every aspect of their lives. Nathan and Karie met during their college years, when Nathan was studying to be in ministry, and Karie was finishing up her teaching degree. “Nathan roomed with my brother Frank,” explained Karie. “He caught a glimpse of my photo and asked Frank who I was. Frank told him to forget about it!” she laughed.

“As my plane ascended above the banana trees, my mind was on the people I had met there and loved,” she said. Her heart rate on the monitor was barely in the 30s.

“In an ambulance, on my way to the American Hospital of Paris, a baby was born in the taxi behind us, and I thought ‘Is this it? A brand-new life behind me while I leave this earth?’ And that’s when I surrendered completely, trusting in my faith,” Karie said.

But the Owens’ story is one of redemption and renewal, and Karie emerged from the shadows of her illness, her spirit unbroken. After two weeks back in the States, she met Nathan and her children and recovered completely.

Together, the Owens family continued their missionary endeavors, traversing continents and spreading hope wherever they went. Their resilience, forged in the fires of adversity, became their guiding light. After her near-death experi -

ence in Cameroon, Karie was blessed to give birth to Anna in South Africa and then had the last set of twins shortly after.

Today, the Owens family stands as a beacon of resilience in their community, both in their missionary work and in their family-owned flooring business, NK Floors. Nathan’s expertise in the trade, passed down from generations, forms the cornerstone of their enterprise.

“Nathan learned the flooring trade from his father at a very young age,” Karie explained. “His skill and knowledge make this business stand out and thrive.” Karie and even some of their older children also have their flooring installation certifications. “One of our dreams is to educate and train future professional flooring installers.” Their showroom in Fredericksburg showcases “resilient floors,” mirroring the indomitable spirit that defines their family. Beyond business, the Owens family is involved in serving in their church, Faith Baptist, and enjoys various activities, from teaching to singing and playing instruments to participating in ladies’ and children’s ministries, to taking short-term mission trips.

“We love to host friends and family in our home, making homemade Italian wedding soup and lasagna,” said Karie. They moved to the Chancellorsville area almost two years ago to be involved in their church and grow closer as a family.

The Owens family has worked endlessly to set up their new floor ing showroom in Fredericksburg. Nathan and the NK team oversee product sales and flooring installs. Karie is involved in the business as a co-owner and teaches biology and anatomy-physiology at the Christian school. Elisabeth is finishing her first year at Pensaco

la Christian College, where she is studying Elementary Education. Summerly and Daniel will graduate from high school this year. Summerly aspires to be a nurse, and Daniel wants to enter the ministry.

Nathan Jr. will be a senior next year and will continue to learn flooring from his father. Jeremiah, Victoria, and Anna are working diligently at school and look forward to spending a summer outdoors. Nehemiah and Joshua, age 4, can’t wait for the next chance to go to the family cabin and ride quads. The Owens kids love participating in soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track. Trail running is a hobby Karie picked up while in South Africa. She and Nathan enjoy running and walking the trails of the Chancellorsville Battlefield in their free time. Their family is looking forward to what the future holds.

In the midst of life’s challenges, the Owens family stands as a living testament to the power of resilience. Like their resilient floors, their strength lies in their composition, rooted in faith, family, and unwavering determination. As they continue their journey, they inspire all who cross their path to weather life’s storms with grace and fortitude.

“Even this comes to an ending point. The strength is not our own,” Karie summed up.

COREtec: The Original, Where Fashion Encounters Functionality

There is something delightful about stepping onto a new floor’s smooth, soft surface. The tones and texture of each plank pull you into the harmonious blend of the room’s interiors and colors. With each step, you can drink in the hues of ash, pine, oak, or your delight in nature. You feel grounded, balanced, and rejuvenated. A beautiful floor means a welcoming space. A durable, dependable, and versatile floor means quality for everyday life.

NK Floors in Fredericksburg could not be more excited to offer COREtec Floors by Shaw Industries for attractive, versatile, luxury vinyl plank flooring. If you want to improve the overall look of your home, choosing new floors to meet your personal, unique preferences is a fundamental place to begin. Flooring is the foundation of your interior design. Is your decor allure traditional, with rich history and lavish colors? Are you a lover of mid-century modern or have an eclectic flair? You may enjoy creating your space with the latest contemporary trends. Whatever your genre of design, COREtec has a floor to meet your style and match it with quality and durability.

What makes COREtec so unique? It is an original product where fashion encounters functionality. COREtec is a vinyl flooring product available in planks and tiles. Its state-ofthe-art manufacturing technology produces the genuine appearance of natural stone and wood. The wood vinyl plank selections integrate an embossing technology for wood-grain textures you can feel with each step. The vinyl tile styles look just like real tile and range from matte to shiny, multi-colored to stark solids, each catering to your personal style. Keeping up with all the new trends and classic traditions, you will be captivated by its beauty. With just one jaunt to our showroom, you could imagine your silhouette dancing over one of these masterpieces. So, just how is COREtec composed? Where is the functionality in such a distinctly captivating look? We must live daily in and on this magazine-like image. Do you

have spills, children running through the house, furry friends, and high-traffic areas? Most of us do. So now what? No problem. COREtec pledges to offer products that are water-proof, pet-proof, and kid-proof. It boasts of scratch resistance, dent and impact resistance, and noise reduction.

One of the key components is cork. The pre-attached underlayment of cork provides a natural repellent to water, in/below-room sound reduction, and thermal insulation. Your steps will be soft and silent with a warm sensation. What does this mean for you? Lower heating bills are music to the ears. You can work or study in a home office while friends and family can play a friendly game of Taboo or watch the Super Bowl.

The second way that COREtec stands out is found in the CORE. There are three cores to meet the customer’s unique needs: WPC, SPC, and Mineral Core. A water-proofed foam core (WPC) provides warmth when the core expands and serves as an insulator, preventing outside temperature transfer. WPC is also less dense and absorbs the impact of each step, making it easier on joints. There is also a sound abatement feature that reduces noises from impacts. The solid polymer core (SPC) provides strength for commercial and high-traffic areas. Finally, the Mineral Core contains no PVC, reducing the amount of movement and increasing rigidity. It also has the versatility of various finishing options and scratch-resistant surfaces.

COREtec, when properly installed, outperforms laminate, glue-down LVT, and click vinyl. Our installation teams install according to manufacturer specifications so you can have the quality floors you deserve. The pictures speak for themselves. When fashion meets functionality, beauty is born. COREtec is revolutionizing the flooring industry and making your next dream home a reality. Your style and standard of excellence are waiting.

MORE THAN JUST SPORTS

For over five decades, the Special Olympics has unified thousands in the spirit of sport and has been a beacon of hope and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In Area 11 of Special Olympics Virginia, which encompasses Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg, this organization has become a lifeline for hundreds of local athletes and their families by offering year-round sports training and competition.

Tim Doyle, Area Coordinator for Special Olympics Area 11, has been intimately involved with the organization for 20 years, 18 of which he has spent leading the local chapter. His journey with Special Olympics began when his son, Matthew, who has Down Syndrome, started participating as an athlete in the Stafford Schools Special Olympics program, which later merged with Area 11.

“While widely recognized as a sports organization, Special Olympics has evolved into so much more,” Tim explains. “Sports are just our vehicle to reach our community and spread our message of unity and inclusion.”

Indeed, Special Olympics has transcended its role as merely a sports organization. It has become the world’s leading healthcare provider for people with intellectual disabilities through its Healthy Athletes initiatives, underscoring its commitment to holistic well-being.

For Tim, the inspiration behind his leadership in the Special Olympics community is deeply personal. “My biggest inspiration is my son Matthew,” he shared.

“Matthew lives, breathes, and sleeps everything Special Olympics,” said Tim. “It has become such an important part of his life not only for the sports he participates in but for the so important social interaction that it breeds.”

And it’s not just Matthew, but thousands like him who have benefitted from the invaluable social interaction that comes along with participating in Special Olympics programs.

The impact of their programs extends far beyond the playing field though. Special Olympics fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment among its athletes, instilling confidence and resilience that transcends sports.

“Our area proudly serves approximately 300 athletes,” Tim said, although that number is down from the 450 athletes they had pre-COVID-19, and the group has faced challenges from the pandemic, among them, a decrease in participation.

Despite facing financial challenges, with all local programs required to raise funds independently, Area 11 has found innovative ways to sustain its programs. One such initiative is the annual Polar

Plunge in Virginia Beach, where Tim, his team, and their “crazy friends” dive into the Atlantic Ocean to raise funds for Area 11 Special Olympics. Since forming their first Polar Plunge Team in 2007, they have raised over a million dollars, demonstrating the community’s unwavering support for the cause.

Tim’s dedication to the Special Olympics is a testament to his commitment to serving his community. A retired Marine Corps veteran, he has called Stafford home since 1996, along with his son Matthew, mentioned above, his wife of forty years, Rose, and his daughter, Theresa, who lives in the area as well with her family.

“We are always looking for people to become involved with the Special Olympics,” Tim emphasized. “Whether as a volunteer or participant, we welcome you to our Special Olympics family.”

For those who have yet to experience the transformative power of the Special Olympics, Tim extends an invitation to join their community. “I encourage you to get involved,” he says. “Our athletes will inspire you, and you’ll become part of our Special Olympics family for life.”

Area 11 Special Olympics is wrapping up their March Madness basketball season and kicking off the spring season, which includes track and field, tennis, aquatics, bowling, softball, and the Young Athlete Program for youth ages 2-7. Volunteers and donations are welcome at any time. Check out www.specialolympicsva.org/rappahannock-region/ area-11 for more information and ways to get involved.

Dr. Kuster’s mother oversees the business’s finances, while his daughter manages digital media and patient outreach efforts. Together, they create a welcoming environment where patients feel valued and cared for.

Beyond their commitment to individualized patient care, Ascent Audiology & Hearing is deeply rooted in the community.

The office hosts an active book exchange and has provided a loving home for several rescue animals. Dr. Kuster’s mother regularly checks in on senior patients, demonstrating a genuine commitment to supporting the community’s well-being.

Throughout the years, Ascent Audiology & Hearing has also demonstrated a strong commitment to philanthropy, donating dozens of hearing aids to charities and missions worldwide. Locally, they have provided hearing aids free of charge to residents in need, ensuring that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.

Recently, the practice welcomed Dr. Ryan Malkiewicz, another audiologist who shares Dr. Kuster’s patient-centered values. Together, they continue to uphold the tradition of excellence and compassion that defines Ascent Audiology & Hearing, making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with hearing impairments.

At Ascent Audiology & Hearing, the most rewarding moments come from witnessing the transformative power of restored hearing.

“The real joy is being able to give patients the gift of hearing their grandchildren playing, patients hearing things they missed for years,” said Dr. Kuster.

From hearing grandchildren’s laughter to the music on the radio, Dr. Kuster’s team enjoys reconnecting patients with the sounds of everyday life. As they look to the future, Dr. Kuster and his team remain dedicated to pioneering innovative solutions and providing unparalleled care to their community, one patient at a time.

Soon Ascent Audiology & Hearing will be relocating to accommodate their growth, so stay tuned to their website, ascentfxbg.com, for the latest updates.

Spring Sake for Cherry Blossom Season

The Annual Cherry Blossom Festival is almost here! Beginning mid-March, locals and tourists alike will find the District celebrating the beautiful sakura (cherry trees) that line the Potomac and bring new life to the capital region every year.

The origin of these trees is very special. They were gifted by the City of Tokyo to the United States as a symbol of friendship in 1912, and since then, the ancient tradition of hanami (flower-viewing) has spread from Japan to the United States and throughout the world.

Sakura are truly beautiful in every phase: as a bud signifying new life, in full blooms of rich pink,

and as they fade, they serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. Traditionally, hanami picnics give families and friends a chance to reflect and be inspired by the changing of the seasons.

Some favorite hanami snacks are rice balls, fresh fruit, and of course, sushi. We also love sipping on craft sake! Here are some of our favorite sake to try during cherry blossom season:

Dassai “45” Nigori - An excellent “cloudy” sake. Creamy with some light, fruity sweetness that finishes slightly dry. Perfect as a starter for a mini charcuterie board.

Real Magic Junmai by North American Sake Brewery - Yes, you read that right, American craft sake is real and we have one in Charlottesville, VA! This sake is clean and mellow, and absolutely delicious with fried chicken, spring rolls, even pizza.

Hakkaisan “AWA” Sparkling - This bubbly, elegant sake will change your life and you might never go back to regular Champagne again! Made using secondary in-bottle fermentation to produce the finest bubbles, this pairs perfectly with oysters, shrimp, and chocolate.

Interested in a sake tasting? Email kanpai@capitalsake.com and follow us on Instagram @capitalsake.

It’s not impossible to take great pictures of your pets, even on your own. Dogs and cats can photograph beautifully but require very different techniques. Before you begin, find a place in your home or outside that doesn’t have a distracting background. For example, in front of a solid color wall, or with a bush or plants in the background if outside.

Once you have your pet in place, you need to grab their attention. You know your pet better than anyone, so use their favorite treat or toy. For dogs, have them sit, and show them the treat or toy, then place it right above your phone or camera. Step back and click away.

Don’t forget to give them the treat if they stay put for you before you try again. If you want to get those cute head tilts, make a high-pitched noise, or use an app on your phone. Squeaky toy sounds, bird sounds, and duck calls all work well. Different noises work for different dogs. And most of the time, the noise only works a few times, so don’t waste it.

For cats, a toy on a string works wonders. Dangle it in front of them to grab their attention and be ready to snap away. For both dogs and cats, it helps if they are on a chair or in a basket.

Throughout my years of being a pet photographer, I have photographed dogs, cats, hamsters, sugar gliders, pigs, rabbits, birds and a lizard. It is possible to get beautiful images of any pet. It takes a lot of patience but is so rewarding once you create that perfect image.

THE BEAUTY OF A SECOND CHANCE

Beauty for Ashes is a local women’s and children’s home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They provide a unique 9-12 month residential program that allows a mother and her child(ren) to stay and grow together as the mother is restored from a life-controlling situation.

Mike and Cindy Zello, Founders of Adult and Teen Challenge Virginia, have cared for individuals who struggle with addiction for 40 years. After serving in the Washington, DC area for 19 years, they moved with their children to Virginia in 2002 to pioneer a brand new Teen Challenge program in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They have successfully opened a long-term residential program for men, the Beauty for Ashes Women and Children’s Home, and are actively pursuing a presence in Richmond, Virginia, with the programs they offer.

Executive director and founder of BFA, Cindy, explained the purpose behind her desire to found the organization, saying, “Mothers who are struggling with addiction or other life-controlling problems too often do not seek or find help because it means separation from their children, leaving both mother and child caught in a cycle of dysfunction, hopelessness, and brokenness.”

She continued to express her observations, stating that the population is “in desperate need of residential care, [but] there are so few programs that provide long-term, resi -

OF BEAUTY FOR ASHES

dential care for women without separation from their children.”

Thus, Beauty for Ashes was born from the vision God had given Cindy.

The property of Beauty for Ashes was acquired in 2013, dedicated in 2015, and– with the renovation help of many local businesses, churches, and community members–the doors officially opened in January 2016.

Beauty for Ashes provides all the components the mother and child(ren) may need to set them up for a successful life. This consists of a Christian faith-based curriculum, life skills training, continued education for the mothers, grade school education for the children, healthcare, and childcare. Beauty for Ashes is a holistic ministry that hinges on these families’ social, mental, physical, and spiritual wholeness and restoration.

Cindy says, “Beauty for Ashes provides a safe, stable, loving home environment and offers help, hope, and healing to both mother and child.”

Over the past eight years, BFA has had a remarkable impact, caring for more than 70 families, including 14 pregnant women. Many BFA graduates now live as thriving mothers in Spotsylvania or neighboring counties.

For each family, Beauty for Ashes has met them where they are at, recognizing that

the needs of each mother and child are not identical. As Cindy says, “We love and care for them according to their needs,” BFA adapts to each family’s needs through intentional care that aims to help these families become healthy and whole to an extent where they can maintain this wholeness outside of BFA.

Beauty for Ashes can make a lasting impact on the lives of so many people because of the private funds they receive from local churches, organizations, and individuals.

If you, or someone you know, would like to support Beauty for Ashes and their cause, you can do so through donations or volunteer services.

As Zello summarized Beauty for Ashes’s immense impact on the community, she said, “These women had been written off, and society had determined they didn’t deserve to be mothers. Given the opportunity and the incredible program of Beauty for Ashes, they no longer live in shame and guilt or become another statistic representing failure. Families are being healed and made whole.”

To find out more visit, www.atcva.org. If you’re interested in information concerning the current tangible goods needed at BFA, to get involved through volunteerism, or becoming a community partner to host the BFA team for meetings, fundraisers, and church services/events, you can contact Cindy Zello at cindyz@atcva.org.

For more information about the Beauty for Ashes platform, and current events, you can find them on Facebook at: Beauty for Ashes Women and Children’s Home and Adult and Teen Challenge Virginia, and on Instagram @teenchallengeva.

It’s History With a Twist: A Look at The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild

Malanna Henderson, a Detroit native, learned how to sing Jazz by listening to records by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn before she entered kindergarten. Reading Nancy Drew novels, while in middle school, piqued her interest in writing her own stories. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit, and a MFA in Creative Writing from City University of New York. An award-winning playwright, singer and songwriter, her adoptive city of Fredericksburg blessed her with a husband and an opportunity to produce a collection of Civil War themed plays. Check out her book, On the Wings of Freedom, and more information at malannahenderson.com

The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild mix history with scandal and adventure as they perform first-person narratives from daring historical personages. These women defied 19th century decorum and flourished outside the communal spheres of family, church and home.

Stafford resident Kim Harmon charms audiences as Victoria Woodhull who rose to prominence from a child fortune-teller to become the first woman candidate to run for the presidency of the United States in 1872, against the incumbent Ulysses S. Grant, and Democrat Horace Greely. Ignored by editors of established periodicals, she founded her own newspaper to tout her scandalous beliefs of free-love, divorce, and voting rights for women.

Sheila Chambers, of Stafford, developed an enslaved character, a composite representing millions of women who toiled from sunup to sundown. They wielded resistance in many forms, often subtle and undiscovered.

“When I look in the mirror and see the ancestors staring back… and when I open my mouth to sing and hear the strong, deep, melodic voice of the enslaved flowing from my lungs, I have no choice but to follow my heart by capturing through music their stories that were never told.”

Faceless and nameless, their existence lives on through the lyrics of their songs. Chambers, a composer, captures their enduring spirit with her dramatic voice.

Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, often portrayed by Malanna Henderson of Spotsylvania, became a renowned opera singer, and the first African American to give a commanding performance at Buckingham Palace for Queen Victoria in 1853.

“Here, I have a chance to combine my love of history with my talents as a singer, songwriter and actress,” Henderson said. Founder of the Lady Time Travelers, and the Women of the American Civil War, member Denise Benedetto of Locust Grove, often dons the persona of Mary Elizabeth Bowser, a free woman with a photographic memory. Disguised as an enslaved domestic in the Jefferson Davis household, Bowser learned of and passed on military secrets to the Union.

The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild was founded in 2022 by Yvette S. Blake, Spotsylvania resident and Army veteran, when she gathered members from various Civil War reenactment groups to form a new guild. She breathes life into Lucy Ann Walker, who by moving garments on the clothesline signaled to her husband, Dabney, across the Rappahannock River, the movements of the Rebel army. Dabney was a scout for the Union, and she, a laundress for the Confederates.

“I love history and strive to honor our ancestors,” states Blake. “Moreover, it’s my desire to educate the public on the adventures and challenges of women during the Civil War through historical re-enactments and demonstrations. I want to make history fun by incorporating the past with a twist of the present and serve as a community resource for those seeking to better understand and appreciate the culture of women during the Civil War.”

Since their inception, the ten-member guild have appeared at civic events including DC Emancipation Day Parade, Fairfax History Day, Fort Pocahontas, 160th Reenactment, Historic Port Royal School 100th Anniversary, Fredericksburg Women’s Group, and many more.

The Scandalous Women of the Civil War Guild has been at numerous recent events in the area and will be setup at the 4th Annual WIN Tea at The Clubs at Quantico on March 30. Tickets and more information for the event themed “Women Empowering Women to Affect Change” can be found at staffordnaacp.org.

SYNERGY HOMECARE:

RAISING THE STANDARD OF PATIENT CARE

SYNERGY HomeCare of Fredericksburg is owned and operated by Beata Alghabra, who comes from a background in healthcare management and finance. She is joined by Jalal Alghabra, PA-C, who has over 20 years of experience working as a healthcare provider. The company serves residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, Culpeper, Orange, and Caroline. Their services range from companion care to personal care to specialized care for people with chronic health conditions, memory care, diabetes care, or recovery from illness or surgery.

Beata was drawn to the home care industry after witnessing her aging parents’ passion for independent living and the struggles as an adult child to accomplish and respect their wishes. Trying to make that happen for them by providing them with trusted, quality care in the privacy of their own home was a mission she would not take lightly.

“It all started during Covid. My father was hospitalized and wasn’t going to be released from the hospital until we found care for him, but he refused to live anywhere but in his home. I can’t say that I blamed him. There’s nothing better than to be surrounded by the sense of security of your own home, your possessions, your comforts, your routines and habits, and the memories from all the years of effort and hard work it took to possess them. No one wants to let go of that. That’s what it means to be human.”

Home care was a natural next step as someone who already placed incredible value on independence and providing others with the tools to better themselves.

By her side is her in-house administrator and husband of 20 years, Jalal Alghabra, who oversees the onboarding of new Care Professionals and also meets with potential clients.

“When we match a client to a care professional, we do so with confidence. We want the very best for everyone. Ultimately, happy clients and care professionals make Synergy a happy place, and we like things that way”.

SYNERGY HomeCare of Fredericksburg provides a wide range of non-medical care options. We provide extended-stay options for those primary caregivers who happen to be family members for that much-needed respite care. Other options include overnight care and late night care too.

Personal care aide help includes assistance with cooking, shopping, assistance to doctor’s appointments, running errands, light housekeeping, and other tasks that allow clients to live independently. Personal care provides assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and other activities of daily life.

“We want to care for our caregivers as much as we want to care for our clients. We believe that to have quality care and service, it all starts with providing our caregivers the foundation, pay, and structure needed for them to do what they love, which is taking care of our beloved clients,” Beata stated. “We place an emphasis on preventing burnout, focusing on mental health, and providing a fun place to work. All of these things translate to happy caregivers. Ultimately, we want our caregivers to be part of the Synergy family long-term.”

“Jalal provides the calm, steadfast resolve that one needs to navigate working in healthcare. He provides a fun-loving atmosphere that’s hard to find these days. I’m blessed in so many ways to have him a part of this spectacular team and organization. I am in awe of him daily. His approach to patient care is like no other, and we love that about him!” Beata stated fondly.

“We acknowledge that being a caregiver in today’s home care environment is not easy. Burnout is real and very much relevant. Mental health is not just a hot topic for patients and clients, but those working with them,” Beata said. “We want to be an amazing place to work, gain confidence, be accessible to our caregivers, and help them grow as individuals working in home care. You’re not an employee when you work for Synergy. You’re family from the moment you sign on with us!”

“We want to provide a graceful, organic complement to independent living for our aging population. We want to help foster a strong, kind, and compassionate relationship between the client and the care professional. Our priority is to provide our clients with the support they need to lead an independent lifestyle,” said Beata. “We promise to go above and beyond in our pursuit to help people live happy, independent lives for as long as possible.”

PREPARING FOR SUCCESS: A GUIDE TO ACHIEVING OPTIMAL EXAM SCORES

With the fourth quarter nearing, final exams are quickly approaching. As this can be a time of stress for many, much worry can be alleviated with the proper preparation and test-taking techniques. There are a few essential thoughts to remember during this test-taking season that will set you up for success!

Long Term Studying

According to Harvard Summer School, it is imperative to spread out the studying over the course of at least a few weeks. While keeping up with classwork assignments is important, the start of the fourth quarter is also a great time to create a study plan that incorporates exam preparation into your regular schedule.

A beneficial method for long-term studying is to study by unit. For example, this week, you will review all of units 1-3; next week, you will go through units 4-6. The ultimate goal of your study plan should be to promote daily review and gain exposure to each topic that will appear on the exam.

Additionally, a simple way to supplement the unitby-unit review can be using test prep books, such as Barron’s and Princeton Review, which can be found at local bookstores or on Amazon. As well as breaking up the topic by unit, these books include practice tests and other extra resources.

Mindset

Scientists at Stanford University have discovered a brain pathway that links a positive mindset with achievement. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain a positive mindset leading up to final exams.

One way to do this is to choose an activity you enjoy, such as nature walks, and use this to center yourself.

Anytime you feel overwhelmed, you will partake in the activity to redirect and calm your mind.

Another method to maintain a positive mindset is to get in the habit of replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. For instance, if you think, “I’m going to fail,” you should immediately replace that thought with, “I’m going to succeed.”

The Night Before and Morning of the Exam

The actions you take in the 24 hours leading up to the test are pivotal in determining your level of success.

Gathering all of your supplies the night before will allow you to sleep at ease, knowing that you are physically prepared for the next day. Additionally, it will eliminate a sense of rush in the morning, which can evolve into stress and negatively impact your performance.

A good night’s sleep is also critical. Though some may desire to stay up late to get in some last-minute review, sleep is more beneficial and will restore and prepare your mind for the upcoming day.

Lastly, on the morning of the test, it is important to eat a nutritious breakfast, such as eggs, yogurt, or oatmeal. Eating a solid breakfast will provide energy, help you stay focussed, and avoid hunger during the test-taking period.

During the Test

According to Harvard University, there are some steps to follow during an exam to achieve optimal scores.

This process begins with listening closely to the proctor’s instructions and ensuring you understand what will happen when the timer starts. As the test begins, it can be helpful to take a few minutes to “brain dump” and write down everything that comes to mind that might be useful throughout the test.

As you go through the test, if there are questions that you are stuck on, skip them and come back later to ensure that you have enough time. However, if you skip questions, be sure that you revisit them and fill in an answer even if you need more clarification, especially if the test doesn’t count wrong answers against your score.

Additionally, there may be moments where you feel overwhelmed. In those moments, it is crucial to stop and take a deep breath, relax your muscles, and think of something positive to find calm.

Lastly, if you answer all the questions but still have time remaining, defy the urge to close your packet and lay your head down. Review your answers to ensure that you completed everything thoroughly and to the best of your ability.

Through the busyness and pressure of test season, it is vital to strive for your best, but also remember that test scores don’t define you. By following the above techniques concerning studying and test-taking strategies, an optimal test score will likely be in your future.

PAINTING HAPPINESS AROUND RIVERBEND

As adolescents begin to expand their interests throughout high school, it is essential for school to be a place that creates opportunities to bring students with similar passions together. This provides these students with an environment where they can bond with their classmates over shared interests and build strong and long-lasting friendships.

This is precisely what the art club at Riverbend High School has set out to do, as it has opened an environment to any and all students at Riverbend who are interested in art, despite their level of artistic experience or talent. The art club allows art-driven students to collaborate and share their art as part of a cooperative, art-loving school community.

Three-year art club member Sofia Alfaro explained that the art club is open to more than just students who currently take art or have taken an art class in the past. The only requirement for the club this year is an interest in art. During the club meetings, you don’t have to create anything outstanding. It’s simply a place to have fun, build friendships with those around you, and put whatever you desire onto paper.

The club typically meets weekly, and each meeting begins with an exercise to bring the artistic vibe to life in the room. The exercise displays a prompt on the board for each student to follow. Alfaro gave an example, “They will give a random prompt such as draw some sort of creature wearing a hat.” Alfaro continued, saying, “It’s something fun to get your mind flowing and thinking.”

Once everyone completes the prompt and is in the artistic spirit, the day’s main activity begins. The activity can range from creative drawing challenges to watercolor to decorating holiday cards. For example, a particularly fun activity during one club meeting consisted of each table receiving a card listing two items, and each student could draw a picture with their own rendition of one of the items.

Although there are guided activities, the students can also work freely on other art-related projects. For example, sometimes students use this time to work on art from their art class. Alfaro described a time when she and a friend used the time to draw a portrait from a photo Alfaro had taken. They then got the other club members to judge the drawings. Alfaro recalled the memory fondly, saying, “It was funny!”

Alfaro enjoys the club’s vibe: “It’s pretty chill, and pretty calm. You can kinda do your own thing if you want to… You’re open to do whatever you want, as long as it’s related to art.”

Overall, everything done at each club meeting is purely for fun, but if students make something they are particularly proud of, they can submit their artwork to be featured around the school or on the Riverbend Art Club social media accounts.

This club has positively impacted the Riverbend community, providing a place for art-passionate students to spend time, grow friendships, and bond with each other.

Pistachio Shell

Ladybugs

This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed.

Materials:

• Pistachio shells

• Red paint or red sharpie/marker

Directions:

To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome.

• Paintbrush

• Black sharpie

Step 1. Paint the pistachio shells all red. Let the paint dry completely, approximately 30 minutes. Another option: With a red sharpie color the pistachio shell completely.

Step 2. With a black sharpie draw a curve on the top of the pistachio for the ladybug head.

Step 3. With a black Sharpie add two dots for the eyes.

Step 4. In the middle of the curve draw a straight line down to separate the pistachio shell into half.

Step 5. Draw 3 or 4 dots on each side of the line. Voilà!

Step 6. Optional, glue ladybugs on leaves.
