We meet another incredible family in the community as well: The Watsons of Fawn Lake. Ed and Josie Watson are proud members of the community, avid nature lovers, and, along with their sons, Bryce and Kyle, give back to the community in tremendous ways. They also have some pretty unique memories to share in their feature as well. Additionally, we have some new businesses that we’re adding to our list of resident experts and new sponsors. Thank you Kitchen Tune-Up of Fredericksburg & Stafford and Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg for your support. You’ll get to read a little more about them in an upcoming issue, and you’ll meet the experts from Next Level Plumbing in the following pages. We also put the spotlight on Louie’s HUWE, a local nonprofit organization founded by a mother going to great lengths to bring awareness and research to the genetic mutation, HUWE-1. In addition to this hero mom, we would love to shine a spotlight on multiple others in our community. If you know of a teacher, first responder, service member, police officer, or volunteer who gives back to the community, please let us know. We would love to hear from you as well as give them a shout out for their efforts and the recognition they deserve. And, lastly, but certainly not least, we would like to recognize the loss of Dr. Jayson Tappan. Like so many of you, we were saddened to learn of his passing. We hope to honor Dr. Tappan and his legacy and impact within the community in a coming issue. If you’d like to contribute your stories and memories about Dr. Tappan, please contact us. As always, we would like to thank our sponsors and you, the readers of Neighbors of Chancellorsville, for your patronage. We hope that the New Year is off to a phenomenal start for you and yours! Happy reading,

© Best Version Media Life is what you make it for the Watsons, and an integral part of life is the concept of “home.” Through his initial carpentry work, Ed built numerous homes in the area before working at the White House. He served under multiple presidents, accruing a treasure trove of stories from 37 total years at The White House. Not too shabby for this ‘81 grad from Woodbridge Senior High School. Ed retired as The White House carpentry shop foreman, a position he held for 20+ years. Like Ed, Josie did her part to help others craft their idea of home. Mom, Josie, graduated from Hayfield High School and worked for seven years with Fairfax County in Juvenile Relations before getting into the mortgage business. Josie retired after 19 years with Fannie Mae. While their careers have certainly been fulfilling, their true legacy lies in their family and how they’ve given back to the community. Their life together had a somewhat rocky start. “[On the] day of our wedding, it rained, the limo driver got lost, and [we were] late to the church,” Josie explained. The hiccups continued on their honeymoon. “The cruise ship broke down at sea, [and we were] forced to take a smaller cruise the day of our wedding, they lost our luggage at the airport… oh, and on top of that, when we got on the ship, it was two twin beds. Perfect for a honeymoon!” she laughed. Well, that was just a sign of things to come. The couple later had twin boys. They’ve been happily married for 42 years. “I guess we knocked a lot of the struggles out of the way early,” Josie added. They have knocked it out of the park, too. The family boasts wonderful careers, a loving family, and a multitude of connections and contributions to the community.

Building Dreams Together From the White House to Fawn Lake: Meet the Watson Family

Those connections to the White House though and the stories from Ed’s time there are some of their fondest family memories, like the time Ed “wound up becoming George Bush, Sr.’s horseshoe partner in a tournament on the White House grounds,” Bryce explained. “They ended up winning the tournament.” Again, not too shabby for the President and Ed Watson, a former national MVP and champion for men’s softball. While the former (then current) president and her husband were playing, Josie was actually pregnant with Kyle and Bryce.

Josie and Ed first met at work, which is fitting as both went on to have fulfilling careers, Josie helping hundreds of families with their home mortgages and Ed working in probably the most well-known “home” of all: The White House. The two knew of each other through softball games, but they didn’t hit it off until they began working together at Auto Train in Lorton, VA, in the 70s.

“Barbara Bush noticed this [pregnant woman], pulled up a chair next to her, and started talking about motherly things, I suppose,” Bryce explained. “Well, when Kyle and I were born, Barbara Bush was one of the first ones to send my mom flowers in the hospital. Fast forward four months later to the White House Christmas Party, she [the First Lady] recognized my parents and immediately ran over, asking, ‘Are those my boys?!’ and scooped us both right up.” Later on when George Bush, Jr. was leaving the White House, the family was invited to another celebration. Barbara and George Bush, Sr. were there and saw them again, saying the same thing, “Are those my twins?!”

The couple works hard and plays hard. Josie and Ed enjoy bowling and are immersed in the community– the entire Watson family has learned life lessons from work, hobbies, and athletics.

“Needless to say,” laughed Bryce, “the White House has provided many good memories to our family.”

Their interests include hunting, fishing– pretty much anything outdoors– and they support the local teams– Orioles and Nationals on the baseball diamond, the Capitals on the ice, and the Commanders on the gridiron. Kyle and Bryce take after mom and dad, “playing on a softball team together, a bowling team together, and coaching Kyle’s son Brady’s U10 Little League Team,” Ed explained. Though neither of them have ever had the honor of being horseshoe partners with a sitting president, they’ve done pretty well for themselves. “We’ve always been active in the community,” explained Bryce, “whether it was us playing a plethora of sports, or taking part in sponsoring less fortunate families or fostering animals,” which is a testament to how Ed and Josie raised their boys. Their now adult children play in various sports leagues, coach Kyle’s son’s little league teams, and sponsor various programs through their business, Grand Slam Plumbing. “Basically, what I am trying to say is Kyle and I love the area and we know exactly where our roots come from,” said Bryce. “We love to hunt and fish, often going back to the same spots my grandfather and father would take us as little kids. where nothing is caught, it brings back all of those memories and makes it all worthwhile.” Like his sons, Ed enjoys the outdoors, bowling, sports, golfing, and woodworking. He does some home improvement work for friends and family, loves getting together with them for card nights, and volunteers with Josie at a local farm in Bowling Green. Like most grandparents, they adore their three grandchildren. While Ed prefers camping and hunting, Josie prefers to spend weekends antiquing, crafting, and attending vintage fairs in the area. She also likes a change in weather and loves vacationing at the beach or anywhere tropical. The couple enjoys bowling together and feeding and watching their hummingbirds. The tranquility of nature is what led them to put down roots in Fawn Lake. After working in D.C. for so long, the family enjoys “being a little further out from the hustle and bustle,” feeling as if they are “somewhat in the country without being too far from society, close to friends and family as well as the interests and hobbies we have.” But they love the wildlife in the neighborhood and the safety and tranquility of the area. They’ve been in Fawn Lake for three years and first fell in love with its “beauty” and how “well kept and groomed it was.” The amenities are also a plus for these nature lovers, and they enjoy the tennis courts, pool, golf course, beach, dog park, and numerous trails. The Watsons also give back to the community, sponsoring the local Fawn Lake Youth tennis team through Grand Slam Plumbing and their grandson’s Little League team and Josie volunteers her time at local farms

as well. She’s even had the incredible opportunity to assist with some deliveries of newborn cattle and goats. Needless to say, they love the area and the opportunities that abound for them to enjoy in retirement, but they hold a special place in their hearts for Fawn Lake. “No question about it,” Bryce added, “Fawn Lake is very community driven and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. Our neighbors have been super supportive of the business, and, without them, this year wouldn’t have been what it is. They truly look out for each other and it seems as if every neighbor supports each other’s growth no matter what that looks like.” The Watsons consider themselves lucky to be able to sponsor so many programs, including a portion of the veterans’ golf tournament and they “look forward to more opportunities as the seasons change.” “If Fawn Lake had a grocery store, you would seriously never have to leave,” Bryce joked. This outdoor family has certainly found their home. After years of dedicated public service, Ed and Josie Watson enjoy the serenity of shared moments bird watching, the joy of watching their twin sons run their business together, and delight in cheering on their grandchildren from the stands. The magic they’ve created and the definition of home transcends the boundaries of physical structures for the Watson Family. They’re proud of the legacy they’ve built and continue to establish in their forever home and the extended community in Fawn Lake.

REINVENTING LEARNING IN OUR COMMUNITY BY JULIA PESNELL

After winter break, jumping back into the swing of school can be challenging. Whether it’s re-perfecting a sleep schedule or finding time to fit in homework, this time of the year can be particularly stressful. With the next real “break” being over two months away, it can begin to feel like the school year is dragging along. Students are constantly counting down the minutes to the end of the school day or the weekend and looking ahead to the long-awaited snow day. These students need a little boost, and-- if carried out properly-- a New Year’s resolution can help a student propel themselves through the rest of the school year. With upcoming deadlines, final exams, and heavy course loads, it is imperative for each student to stay motivated in a way that makes their learning excel. There is an endless variety of goals a student could manifest for themselves. Still, for one who may not be able to formulate any ideas, there are some general goals that can boost a student’s learning and productivity. Academic goals could include increasing one’s grade in a class, studying more frequently, or becoming more organized. Other goals could pertain to improvement in a sports performance, or relate to fine arts goals such as art, chorus, or band. A third category could pertain to personal life, whether spending more time with family, finding time for a hobby, or establishing a more consistent sleep schedule. Steps to Create a Successful New Year’s Resolution According to “Action for Happiness,” a global charity movement working to increase happiness worldwide, there are a few basic steps to creating a New Year’s resolution. First, brainstorm and decide on something that you desire to achieve. This can fall under various categories, from school, home-life, sports, and beyond. Next, it is vital to write your goal down; as you do this, carefully make the goal more specific. Include a time frame in which you wish to achieve your goal, as well as make sure that the goal is easily measurable so that you can track your progress. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get better at math,” a more achievable goal would be, “I want to increase my math grade to at least a 95% by the end of March.” Making the goal more specific will make it easier to remain motivated.

Additionally, it is beneficial to tell someone about your goals. Whether it’s a friend, a parent, or someone else, this will serve an accountability purpose and push you to stick with your goal. A tool that can be especially helpful for larger goals is to break it down into smaller checkpoints. This will help you to continually feel accomplished, encouraging you to continue working towards your goal. The previous example, for instance, can be broken down by saying, “I hope to score an A on the next math quiz.” These small goals should all support and ultimately build up to the larger goal, but break it down to make each part more quickly and easily achievable. Next, it is important to choose where you are going to start. Planning your first step is crucial because it is the move that propels you forward and eventually helps you achieve your goal. For example, you could plan to study math for thirty minutes three days a week until the end of January. Then, you can assess the results of that technique and adjust from there, maybe deciding to increase studying to four days a week for February. Lastly, the most critical step is to follow through. Most people don’t continue their plans to achieve their goals. In fact, Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business states that, statistically, only about 9% of Americans actually achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Setting goals can be beneficial in the various aspects of a high school student’s life, helping them stay motivated to become the best versions of themselves possible. Just by following these simple steps, any student could begin to fulfill their biggest aspirations, and the new year is the perfect time to start!

BRINGING STUDENTS’ PASSIONS TO LIFE AT RHS BY JULIA PESNELL, PHOTOS BY ELLA STONEBREAKER

Riverbend High School has more clubs than can be counted, ranging from academic clubs to community service clubs and clubs that are just for fun, such as the Card Game Club! Because of the wide variety of clubs, there is a club available to fit nearly every student’s interest. But, if there is a case where a student desires a club that doesn’t exist, they can turn their passion into a reality by creating a new club at Riverbend. There is a process to go about this, where the student who desires to found the club must create an outline for the club and submit it to the principal for approval. This includes creating bylaws, officer positions, goals, and club functions. The founder must also find a teacher or administrator at the school willing to be the sponsor and advisor, supervising the students during meetings. Once the club is approved, recruitment begins! The club often stems from a friend group sharing a passion for a topic and wanting to turn it into a club. Over time, though, the club quickly expands as the word travels around the school by mouth and over the “RHS News,” the daily morning announcements. This happened with the Card Game Club when founder, and current senior, Ella Stonebreaker was inspired to create the club because she and her friends loved to play card games together. Stonebreaker decided to take her passion and make it a reality so that students could have fun playing games together during their “free period,” called Bear Block. Explaining what inspired her to create the club, Ella said, “I enjoyed playing card games, and I felt like they could really bring people together, as it did [for] my

10 | N EI GHB O R S O F C HA N C E L LO R SV I L L E

friends, and [we could] have some fun. We actually created the club so that we could continue to play games the following year when we didn’t have gym [class] together.” Stonebreaker plans and leads club activities where she teaches the members how to play a card game each week. They play games such as Skip-Bo, Uno, Spoons, Golf, and others that are favorites of the club members. Stonebreaker says, “I think Card Game Club has positively impacted the students who choose to participate because they put down their phone and actually talk to people and learn to play something new.” In a world where teenagers spend an ever-increasing amount of time on their phones and social media, this is an important aspect. The fact that the club provides an environment that makes students willingly want to participate is a big deal. This can build new friendships and help students have rich school experiences. Clubs like this and their effects make it apparent just how important it is for schools to allow student input to create activities and clubs they think other students would enjoy. Students tend to have the best idea of what their peers like, so if enforced correctly, allowing students to create activities by themselves could potentially increase student involvement. Let Riverbend’s Card Game Club be an example—a club that is simply fun and unrelated to school but one that encourages participation and happiness. And a club like this, which provokes joy in students, is what many students need!

RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL: FALL SPORTS RECAP BY JULIA PESNELL, PHOTOS BY JULIA PESNELL & NATALIE HACKING

As the 2023 Riverbend fall sports season comes to a close, this year has certainly been one for the history books! Each team has had a remarkable season, as RHS saw many broken records, goals, touchdowns, and district, regional, and even state titles. The season was spectacular, with many teams qualifying for regionals and states! With the fall sports preseason beginning as early as June and the championship season extending as late as November, these athletes are highly committed to their sport and dedicated to maintaining adequate grades in school. Just by looking at all the accomplishments from each sport this season, it is abundantly clear how hard these athletes work. After placing 2nd in the state for the past two years, there were high expectations for the boys’ cross-country team coming into the season. They finished 1st in the region and 3rd at the state meet with four runners earning “All-Region” recognition and one earning “All-State” accolades. Freshman Ethan Hacking said, “My favorite part about cross

country is being able to run competitively with other people who also love running.” Hacking earned one of the seven spots on the state line-- a huge accomplishment as a freshman. The girls’ cross-country team had an ambitious goal from the start of the season. As the girls’ team captain and regionally qualifying runner, Sofia Visioni, said, “The ultimate goal for the girls this season was to make it to states, which means placing in the top three at regionals. We surpassed our goal by winning the regional title.” This is the first time the girls’ team has made it to states in years, and because of that, it was a huge accomplishment. The girls’ team ran hard at the state meet, earning an outstanding 6th place on the podium. They also tallied their fair share of accolades with four “All-Region” runners. This is the first year in school history that both the girls’ and boys’ RHS cross country teams have made it to states in the same year. Though this was the goal from the onset of the season, the coaches’ motto of not focusing on the athletes’ individual times, but concentrating on always being the hardest work-

ing team on the course, really showed during races, helping both teams make it to states. This year, the RHS golf team finished their season with an incredible performance, placing 4th in the regional golf tournament and sending junior Matthew Bell on to the state tournament. The varsity field hockey team placed first in the region, garnering accolades as well: five players were named All-District, three All-Region, and junior Leah Maliszewski was named the “Goalie of the Year.” The RHS football team finished the season ranking 11th in the Virginia 5A Division. Additionally, they had five players named to the All-Region football team. Lastly, but surely not least, the volleyball team had a remarkable season. They made it through the regular season undefeated. Then, they kept up the hard work, becoming district champions and advancing to the state semi-finals. The work that every one of these athletes put in was abundantly clear this fall season, as each of Riverbend’s fall sports teams had outstanding seasons!

a stringent workout regimen. While the initial enthusiasm is commendable, the reasons behind the frequent abandonment of these resolutions are multifaceted.

Embracing Spiritual Wellness Instead of New Year’s Weight Loss Resolutions BY LINDA OSORIO, WELLNESS COACH, LMT/RYT

Wow, I’m still shocked at how fast 2023 went, and now here we are in 2024! As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us will find ourselves caught up in the tradition of making resolutions, often centered around losing weight or committing to a challenging workout routine. This pattern of setting weight loss and workout goals begs the question: what if, instead of focusing solely on physical transformation, we redirected our efforts toward inner growth and spiritual wellness? After all, if we are right in our minds and hearts, isn’t it easier to achieve these goals? We may have had it all backward!

One of the primary pitfalls lies in the external focus of these goals. We have been conditioned to believe we must “look” a certain way to be accepted or loved. When weight loss and body sculpting become the sole objective, it often comes with unrealistic expectations. Rapid changes in diet and extreme workout routines can lead to burnout, frustration, and, ultimately, the abandonment of the resolution. I have personally found that small changes, such as drinking green tea vs coffee in the morning while I give thanks to God, help me stay focused and aligned with my intentions for the day. Fasting for Physical and Spiritual Health Fasting is also a great way to support your brain and gut health. Fasting in the morning or evening encourages the body to tap into stored fat for energy, promoting fat utilization.

In a world that often emphasizes external appearances, seeking an inner workout with God (aka source, Creator, Jah) invites us to explore a holistic approach to well-being— one that encompasses the spirit, mind, and body.

In Aryuvedic culture, the person wakes up at sunrise, fasts up to 5 hours afterward, and stops eating at sundown. Water and tea is an exception. Fasting has been shown to support the following: weight management, fat loss, improved insulin sensitivity, cellular repair, enhanced brain health, and cardiovascular health.

The Pitfalls of Traditional Resolutions Every January, countless individuals embark on the journey of New Year’s resolutions, vowing to shed those extra pounds gained over the holidays or commit to

In the Book of Daniel (Daniel 1:8-14), Daniel, a biblical figure, undergoes a form of fasting. He chooses to abstain from the food and wine offered in the king’s court, opting for a diet of vegetables and water.

The Quran prescribes fasting during Ramadan as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset during this month, refraining from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior. In Buddhism, the Uposatha is a day of observance marked by fasting and increased mindfulness. Lay Buddhists may abstain from certain foods and engage in additional meditation and reflection on these days.

So, as you can see, fasting has long been a way to heal the body and uplift the spirit. Integrating Physical Exercise as a Spiritual Practice Rather than viewing exercise as a means solely for weight loss, consider integrating physical activity as a spiritual practice. Engaging in activities like swimming, qi gong, yoga, walking, or dancing with a mindful awareness can connect to your spirit—a way to honor the body and express gratitude for the gift of movement. The journey of seeking an inner workout with God is not about instant results but embracing transformation. It involves cultivating patience, perseverance, and a willingness to surrender to a higher purpose. Unlike the fleeting nature of many New Year’s resolutions, the inner workout is a lifelong journey that unfolds with each step taken in faith. Finding Strength in Faith Faith can serve as an anchor in the choppy seas of life. Rather than relying solely on our strength, turning to our Creator for guidance and support can provide a sense of resilience and purpose. This inner workout involves surrendering control, trusting in a higher power, and understanding that true strength comes from spiritual connection. This shift involves nurturing your spiritual connection and seeking a profound workout with God. Embracing a spiritual approach to wellness can lead to long-lasting, meaningful transformations that extend beyond physical changes. In conclusion, let us reconsider the nature of our resolutions. Instead of chasing external ideals, let us embark on a journey of inner transformation, seeking a profound workout with God. This shift towards spiritual wellness promises lasting fulfillment and a deeper connection with oneself and divine timing. Ultimately, the most significant transformations often occur when we align our daily choices with the soul’s calling.

Master Sergeant Kretzer was born in Round Rock, Texas, and enlisted in the Air Force in July 2005 after graduating from Leander High School. After completing Basic Military Training and Technical Training he was assigned to Dyess AFB in 2005, then in 2010 was attached to the Joint Force Command Headquarters North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Netherlands. He has compiled a wide range of experience through 6 deployments as well as serving with Joint Nations across the globe such as Iraq, Korea, Malaysia, Qatar, Alaska, Okinawa, Australia, and Afghanistan. MSgt David J. Kretzer currently serves as an Acquisition Logistics Manager with the Acquisition Management and Integration Center (AMIC) Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Hampton Virginia. He provides overall direction, oversight, education, and coordination for AMIC logistics contractors. What It Means to Serve Serving in the Air Force goes far beyond just a job or a career; it’s a way of life and a profound commitment to something greater than oneself. Serving in the military has meant dedicating my life to the protection and defense of my country, its values, and the people who call it home. It means being part of a team, a family, that shares a common mission and purpose. The bond forged with my fellow service members is unbreakable, and it’s a privilege to stand alongside them in the face of adversity. My wife, Erin, and my two children have been my unwavering source of support and motivation. They have made countless sacrifices and endured long separations, which reminds me of the importance of the work we do. Serving means safeguarding not only the freedoms we cherish but also the well-being of our loved ones and the promise of a better future for all. Having been deployed to Iraq, I understand the gravity of the missions we undertake. It means facing danger head-on, witnessing the realities of conflict, and the human cost it incurs. Serving means carrying the memories and experiences of those tours with me, a constant reminder of the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy. We would love to feature our neighborhood heroes. Slap Ya Mama SHRIMP CHOWDER

BY MALLORY HARDGROVE, ADAPTED FROM NANCY SKARUPA

Real talk: I haven’t always been the best cook. I essentially learned to cook from ordering HelloFresh in my B.K. (before kids) time, telling myself, “I may not know how to cook, but I can certainly read.” Ordering those meal kits helped give me the confidence to mix and match certain main entrees and sides, trade out ingredients for what fit my tastes better, and make things my own so I began playing with some older family recipes as well. This recipe is adapted from my mother Nancy Skarupa’s cajun shrimp chowder. I’ve taken a few liberties with one of my all-time favorite seasonings: Slap Ya Mama! Warning: it slaps! Time: ~45 minutes Serving Size: Serves 6

Ingredients

Directions

• 6-8 slices of bacon (chopped)-- I ascribe to the life philosophy of “bacon makes everything better,” so I tend to add more.

1. Defrost shrimp (if frozen) and pat shrimp dry; season shrimp all over with Slap Ya Mama, salt, and pepper

• 1 tbsp. butter

2. In a large pot over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy (6-7 minutes, depending on your interpretation of crispy)

• 2 cloves of garlic (again, I lean towards “more is better” when it comes to garlic and minced makes life easier) • 1 lb. yellow potatoes (chopped– I try to get 1 cm cubes)

3. Remove cooked bacon onto a paper towel-lined plate. Do not drain bacon fat! 4. Add shrimp to bacon fat and cook until pink– about 2 minutes per side. Once cooked, move shrimp to the plate with the bacon.

• 3 thyme sprigs (dried seasoning works too, to taste) • 3 cups sweet corn (or 2 cans) • ½ tsp - 2 tsp. Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning (I tend to add more to individual bowls, as I have three young kids who like spicy one day and hate it the next)

5. Now, drain the bacon fat and melt the butter in the pot, scraping up any browned bits at the bottom with a wooden spoon. 6. Add the onion and cook until soft ~5 min.

• 1 lb. shrimp (peeled already; I prefer jumbo, but it’s whatever is on sale, let’s be honest)

7. Stir in the garlic and flour and cook about a min more.

• 1 medium onion (chopped; take your pick of yellow or Vidalia)

9. Reduce heat and cover. Simmer until potatoes are tender ~10 min.

• 2 tbsp. flour

10. Stir in the corn and cream and simmer another 5 minutes.

• 4 cups chicken broth (low sodium if needed)

11. Turn off the heat and stir in the cooked shrimp. Add Slap Ya Mama on top.

• 2 green onions (chopped)

12. Serve with bacon as garnish on top or mixed in– whatever your preference. Add any additional green onions as garnish as well and ENJOY!

• ¾ cup heavy cream

8. Add the potatoes, chicken broth, thyme, and green onions, and bring to a boil.

• salt & pepper to taste (and more Slap Ya Mama for an extra kick) Have you tried this recipe? What about our previous recipes? Tag us @fxbgneighbors! If you want to contribute to our recipe corner email mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com.

RARE, BUT EVERYWHERE: A SPOTLIGHT ON LOUIE’S HUWE

BY MALLORY HARDGROVE, PHOTOS COURTESY OF ELIZABETH COULTER

Mothers are used to seeing a need and filling it. For most mothers, however, the need is less drastic than it is for Elizabeth Coulter. Her son, Louie, has a unique genetic mutation, called HUWE-1. Upon receiving the diagnosis and looking for help, Elizabeth quickly learned there was none. Well, none that focused on her son’s particular mutation. Thus, Louie’s HUWE was born. A Wave of Diagnoses and the Birth of an Organization Louie’s story began in 2012 when he was born with a myriad of health challenges. “We found out soon after his birth that there was something wrong,” Elizabeth explained. “He had trouble breathing and was not moving his arms and legs.” After months of genetic tests and no definitive answers, the Coulters moved to Baltimore to try Johns Hopkins. After a few appointments, they finally had their answer: a HUWE-1 variation. The subsequent years brought a cascade of diagnoses, including hypotonia, slow growth, autism, cortical visual impairment, and epilepsy. “Every year has brought a new diagnosis,” Elizabeth explained. After Louie’s seizures became unbearable in 2021, with 54 different seizures after he was admitted at Johns Hopkins, Coulter had a pivotal conversation with Dr. Barañano, Louie’s neurogeneticist. Elizabeth asked the doctor how to cure him. Her response: “Short of making a drug, there is nothing you can do.” Resolutely, Elizabeth told the doctor, “I’ll fund the cure if you can help find the researcher.” Coulter filed for nonprofit status and emailed a few moms who were involved with the HUWE-1 Facebook group, which included families from all over the world. The moms all agreed to help. “With that, Louie’s HUWE was born.” The Road to a Cure Through Elizabeth’s unwavering commitment, determination, and passion, she has formed the nonprofit organization, which dedicates itself to raising awareness and funds for children affected by the HUWE-1 gene mutation. This genetic anomaly manifests itself in various ways, causing epilepsy, autism, growth problems and delays, muscular issues, and more. The group has grown to include a dozen dedicated moms, all working tirelessly towards finding a cure. Currently, the organization aims to raise $250,000 for a drug trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, focusing on alleviating epilepsy and the

various other maladies caused by the genetic mutation. Over the last two years, they’ve raised $100,000, but they remain a ways away from their goal. Rare, But Everywhere What is profoundly different about Louie’s HUWE is that it is the only organization of its kind and is recognized globally. “We want to help every child around the globe with HUWE-1, no matter how severe their variation or how far they are,” Elizabeth said. “Rare But Everywhere” is the organization’s philosophy, reflecting their commitment to aiding every child globally affected by HUWE-1, regardless of the severity of their condition or geographical location. The organization seeks to provide hope and support to families facing the challenges of this rare genetic mutation. And they’re off to a great start. What sets Louie’s HUWE apart is their remarkable commitment to ensuring that every penny raised goes directly towards finding a cure (less than 1% is allocated to overhead costs), unique in an era where administrative costs can often consume a significant portion of funds. Smiling Through Adversity Elizabeth draws her inspiration from her son, Louie, who faces tremendous daily pain with an infectious smile and a content heart. Louie’s favorite thing is a simple circle.

IT’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE

New Years Jello Shots BY LIZ HENSEL

Left: The Coulters dressed up as your favorite mystery solving team for Halloween: Frankie is Scooby; Belle is Daphne; Louie is Fred; dad, Craig, is Shaggy; Asher is Scrappy; and Elizabeth is Velma. Right: Dr. Barañano and Dr. Brock Grill (researcher piloting our drug trial) are pictured in Seattle in front of the laboratory building where the work is done.

“He will stare at a Ferris wheel all day,” Elizabeth explained. “If you ever see a kid out in the community with a helmet on and no bike in sight, there’s a good chance that kid is Louie,” who wears a helmet to protect him from his daily dozens of seizures in case he is not caught in time. “Come over, say hi, and give him a hug,” Elizabeth said. “Because he is non-verbal, he will give a big smile back. Although he will not be able to say it, just know that you will have made his day.” Louie’s HUWE invites the community to join them for their inaugural “One in a Million” Gala on January 20, 2024 at Potomac Point Winery. Local businesses are encouraged to sponsor, and the organization is accepting tax-deductible gifts for auction. The gala promises to be a night of celebration, compassion, and a shared commitment to funding a drug trial and taking a significant step towards finding a cure and improving the lives of those affected by HUWE-1. “We hope to reach every child with HUWE-1 in the entire world,” said Coulter, “including those who are born with HUWE-1 in Stafford today and those who will be born 50 years from now.” To learn more about Louie’s HUWE and purchase tickets for the Inaugural “One in a Million” Gala, visit www.huwe1.org.

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024! If you read December’s issue, then you already know that I am a huge fan of glitter. What better way to welcome the New Year than with a little bit of sparkle? Ingredients • Plastic shot glasses • 1 cup of your choice of champagne • 1 cup of ginger ale • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin • Edible glitter Instructions 1. Line your plastic show glasses in a baking pan. 2. In a medium saucepan, add the champagne, the granulated sugar, and the gelatin; however, do not mix. Allow it to bloom for 3 minutes. 3. After 3 minutes, mix the ingredients until the gelatin is fully dissolved; do not let it come to a boil. 4. Remove from the heat and add the ginger ale. 5. Once the fizzing stops, pour into the plastic cups. 6. Place the pan in the fridge for 3 hours. 7. Garnish with edible glitter on top.

With just two ingredients, you can create your very own snow at home. Toss it in a bin or tray along with some animal figurines and it is perfect for sensory play. Kids can even build a miniature snowman with it.

Materials: • •

Baking soda Shaving foam

Directions: 1.

Add approximately equal parts baking soda to shaving foam in a bowl or bin.

2. Mix it up with a spoon until it begins to clump up, sprinkling a little more baking soda if needed. 3. Once the mix comes together, work it thoroughly with your hands. When it’s ready, you should be able to clump it up and your hands should be left fairly clean after handling it.
