Dear Neighbors of Chancellorsville,

Love is in the air for certain, and hopefully you are all simply catching cooties and not a cold. While we hope you’re keeping warm inside, we have quite a few stories to share with you that will warm your heart this month. First, is our cover story: The Lethbridge Brothers’ tale of embracing their brotherly bond and teaming up to establish a business that gives back to the community’s schools and trades programs. You’ll learn about veterans, Zach, Matt, and Jake, their entrepreneurial spirit, and their awesome extended family. Once again, we highlight recent happenings at Riverbend High School and a recent graduate’s big win on the gridiron thanks to our student intern Julia Pesnell, and she tells the story of how Virginia’s L-O-V-E signs originated. Speaking of love, we’d also like to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day, and, while we don’t have any tips for heartbreak, we do have some encouraging words from expert Linda Osorio, who shares how massage therapy can alleviate chronic pain for our Wellness Corner. We spotlight local businesses sharing their love of helping others find– NextHome Blue Heron– and improve– NK Floors– their homes. Improvement has been on my mind, too. If you have ideas of how we can improve this magazine or you’d simply like to nominate an organization or individual that you believe deserves a shoutout, cover story, or feature, please let me know. I’d love to connect with you and highlight the many people that make the area an awesome place to live! Happy reading!

COOKING FOR A CAUSE: HOW THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION ‘COOKING AUTISM, INC.’ IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE BY LIZ HENSEL, PHOTOS COURTESY OF COOKING AUTISM, INC.

When you walk into your kitchen and are getting ready to prep dinner, you pull out the pots and pans, prepare the vegetables, and get the spices, all things that seem ordinary, but to some, these simple tasks are extraordinary. Cooking Autism, Inc. was founded by passionate individuals who understand the unique challenges faced by those with autism and their families, their mission is to empower individuals with autism through cooking, promoting independence, social skills, and self-confidence.

Neighbors of Chancellorsville wants to feature non-profit organizations making a difference in our community. To nominate a charity for our Charity Spotlight, email mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com

The heart of Cooking Autism, Inc. lies in its cooking workshops and classes specifically designed for individuals with autism. These programs not only teach essential culinary skills but also focus on communication, teamwork, and social interaction. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, the organization helps participants develop a sense of belonging and self-worth. There are many benefits to cooking and providing life skills, including an increase in communication, fine and gross motor skills growth, socialization with peers and adults, following verbal and written instructions, understanding, and implementing life skills such as cleaning, doing the dishes, wiping tables, and finally, learning a new life skill that will last a lifetime. Their approach to assisting the community is unique because not only are they helping

those in a public and private school setting but also centers and homeschooling. Program Format: Our grant and scholarship applications open in April each year, celebrating Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and close in June. Our grant committee decides in July and disperses the funds between August and September. Cooking classes are offered monthly. Implementation: The classes are implemented based on the program for each grant recipient. Students with disabilities can participate in life skills and culinary classes during school/center hours with the awarded funds. Cooking Autism, Inc. is an inspiring example of how a nonprofit organization can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those it serves. Combining a love for food with a commitment to empowering autistic individuals, they change lives one recipe at a time. Through skill development, social inclusion, and community building, Cooking Autism, Inc. is not only improving the lives of participants but also transforming the way society perceives and supports individuals with autism. This remarkable organization is a testament to the power of passion, inclusivity, and a shared love for cooking. The Lethbridge Brothers:

Building Family, Business, and Community Bonds in Fredericksburg BY MALLORY HARDGROVE

PHOTOS BY KAREN PRESECAN PHOTOGRAPHY AND MATTHEW , ZACHARY, AND JACOB LETHBRIDGE

I

n the heart of Fredericksburg, the Lethbridge brothers set an inspiring example of unity, service, and entrepreneurial spirit. Brothers Zach (36), Matt (33), and Jake (33) all share a passion for their community and country. Their journey from military service to diverse professional fields culminated in the establishment of Kitchen Tune-Up Fredericksburg & Stafford in July 2021, marking a new chapter of collaboration and shared endeavors. Military Roots Like many families in the area, the Lethbridge family is rooted in a legacy of service; their father, Mark Lethbridge, instilled in his sons a commitment to excellence and dedication, while their mother Linda certainly reinforced the ideas of service and sacrifice– as you can imagine raising identical twins and

their older brother while being a military spouse is not for the faint of heart. “Our father, Mark, attended the Naval Academy (graduating in 1980) and was a Naval Flight Officer,” explained Matt. Following their father’s footsteps, Zach, Matt, and Jake embarked on military journeys, each serving the United States but with their own distinct paths. Zach attended Duquesne University and was commissioned in the US Marine Corps in 2009. Matt and Jake both graduated from the Naval Academy in 2013, with Matt commissioning into the US Marine Corps and Jake into the US Navy. In 2013, Zach, a Marine Corps officer, settled in Fredericksburg while serving at Marine Corps Base Quantico and later decided to stay upon exiting the service. His decision to build his life here paved the way

for his brothers to soon follow. Both Zach and Matt were Combat Engineer Officers and Jake was training to become a Naval Flight Officer, like their father. In 2017, Matt found not just a duty station but a home in Fredericksburg. With both his love of the area and the proximity to family, he chose to stay in 2020 after separating from the service. Soon after, Jake followed suit, along with his beloved cat, Mr. Kitty, drawn by the magnetic pull of their brotherly bond, and made Fredericksburg home as well. By the time the ball dropped to ring in 2021, all of the Lethbridge boys could call Fredericksburg home. After growing up in Florida and Georgia, each embarking on different military journeys, being sent to various duty stations, and after separating from

Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) Career & Technical Education (CTE) Program.

Embracing Entrepreneurship & Education “After our service, we all worked in different industries and fields including construction, consulting, and sales, which allowed each of us to bring a unique skill set and strength to our business,” explained Zach. The trio started Kitchen Tune-Up Fredericksburg & Stafford in July 2021.

“We believe in the CTE’s mission and strongly believe in the importance of highlighting the value of the trades to our local communities and country as a whole. One way we show support is through the SCPS CTE Student of the Month’ Program,” Matt said. “Every month Kitchen Tune-Up and CTE, through social media and the radio on B101.5, highlight a student that has gone above and beyond during their studies.”

Kitchen Tune-Up offers a diverse range of services, including full kitchen remodels, refacing, painting, and a unique one-day “Tune-Up” to rejuvenate wood cabinetry. The brothers view their company not merely as a construction firm, but as a service provider focused on assisting customers in creating functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchens tailored to their needs. Like all small businesses the brothers have experienced many good days as well as bad. The brothers will be the first to admit that starting a business, especially a family business, can be extremely challenging and brings with it a host of difficulties. Despite such trials the brothers center on remaining committed to one another along with their mission of serving the community. The trio is extremely passionate about giving back to the young adults who are aspiring entrepreneurs and tradesmen in the area through Kitchen Tune-Up’s partnership with

The Lethbridge brothers emphasized that they have been fortunate to hire several of these highly skilled professionals who have undergone such training in the trades, ensuring that they possess the expertise needed to excel in their role. “Several employees have been truly integral to the company’s growth and have in many ways even become like family,” said Zach. “Their commitment to continuous learning and mastery of their craft is evident in the exceptional quality of work they deliver, making them an invaluable asset to our company.” Aside from being veterans themselves, the brothers have also dedicated themselves to fostering a community that values and supports the contributions of veterans. Their commitment to hiring veterans is centered on not only recognizing the unique skills, discipline, and dedication they bring to the work-

© Best Version Media Zach and his wife Rosemary, a Pittsburgh native, also appreciate the amenities of the outdoors, the rich, local history, and the community involvement in the area. Both have also established fulfilling careers in the area. As mentioned previously, Zach joins his brothers at Kitchen Tune-Up, while Rosemary is currently a Physician Assistant with Mary Washington Healthcare and professor for South University Richmond. Much of Jake’s time remains dedicated to the business, but he enjoys his role as cat dad and “Cool Uncle” to his niece and nephews. Left: Rose and Zach with their children Connor, Andrew, and Madison, enjoy an evening ice skating together. Above: Jake’s cat, Mr. Kitty. Below: Matt and Blair take family photographs with their son, Christian.

“The community at large is a wonderful place to grow as a family. The many great social structures (schools, churches, etc.) within the community make for an ideal place to live,” Matt explained. Zach and Rose agree, as their three children, Connor (10), Andrew (8), and Madison (5), have all been born and raised here.

place, but also on contributing to the well-being and prosperity of the veteran community. Because of the impact made on the veteran community, the International Franchise Association (IFA) named the brothers “Franchisee of the Year” in 2022, a highly-coveted award.

While the brothers clearly appreciate the area and the local community, what is most important is that after individually serving their country, pursuing different endeavors over a number of years, they have been able to come back together in an amazing area to create something special.

Growing Their Families in FXBG Beyond their business pursuits and accomplishments, the Lethbridge brothers are integral members of a community they hold dear. Fredericksburg’s location– nestled between DC and Richmond and the Shenandoahs and Virginia Beach– offers the perfect blend of urban vibrancy, rich history, and natural beauty, for the family. They enjoy the diverse seasons and partake in local attractions like the Fred Nats baseball games and local hikes and savor downtown Fredericksburg’s “fantastic” culinary delights as well. Matthew and his wife Dr. Blair Ryland Lethbridge, a Woodbridge native, enjoy the outdoors, sports, and local spots with their son, Christian (2), and his best friend: their dog, Remington. Dr. Blair Ryland Lethbridge is a Pediatrician for Mary Washington Healthcare. While Blair cheers on Virginia and DC sports teams, Matt is an Atlanta Falcons and Manchester United Fan. Both agree on one form of entertainment, however, and love country music.

Family Adventures While Lake Anna and Motts Run Reservoir are their favorite local bodies of water, the Lethbridge brothers hope to see much larger bodies of water again– and soon. The brothers had some bonding time during a treasured visit to Glacier National Park a few years back and “are looking to take a trip with all of the families” to create even more memories together. While they may have to wait a few more years for that next great family adventure on the horizon, the Lethbridge brothers will continue to add to their journeys here on the home front. Their commitment to each other is reflected in their business and the impact they continue to make here in Fredericksburg, showcasing that often, the blueprint for success in building strong businesses and communities is merely extending those family values beyond individual homes.

SPREADING THE LOVE ALL AROUND VIRGINIA BY JULIA PESNELL

As someone who lives in Virginia, it is almost certain that you have heard the phrase, “Virginia is for Lovers.” It is often stamped onto mugs, t-shirts, and keychains on sale throughout the state, but the origin of this phrase goes much deeper than this stylish merchandise.

Another close and famous LOVE sign is located at the I-95 rest stop. This is also a very popular one because this rest stop receives much traffic in the form of travelers: travelers who are tourists, some who are just passing through, and some who call Virginia home. Though this sign is rather simple, being in all-white letters, it is still highly popular and well-known.

The phrase debuted almost 55 years ago, in March of 1969, in an issue of These LOVE signs provide a unique attraction for those in Virginia and some“Modern Bride,” only after a brief process of shaping the phrase. thing that can bring friends and family together under the “Virginia is for Martin & Woltz Inc. was the creative team credited for coining the phrase Lovers” slogan for a beautiful adventure, and yes, probably a photo, too. after modifying the original slogan from Robert McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s initial slogan consisted of saying Virginia is for lovers, and depending on the If you visit or have visited a LOVE sign around Virginia and would like to share type of advertisement, the particular slogan may say “Virginia is for shop- the memories you made there, you can share photos on social media with ping lovers” or “Virginia is for beach lovers.” But the catch with his idea was the hashtag #LOVEVA. that the slogan would always contain the type of “lover,” never just simply saying, “Virginia is for Lovers.” However, this change came later when Woltz and his creative team decided to modify McLaughlin’s idea by making it more general and, therefore, a more versatile phrase, and in the long run, a more effective advertising technique, by solely saying, “Virginia is for Lovers.” The phrase made Virginia seem more exciting and more adventurous. It attracted tourists from all over the country and encouraged the residents of Virginia to discover more and, therefore, become “lovers” of more. To reinforce this motto for the state, the Virginia Tourism Corporation commissioned the architectural LOVE signs to be built throughout the state, naming this project “LOVEworks.” The idea for the signs is to highlight the specific area by being designed to represent and look like the area in which it is located. For example, in Cape Charles, a LOVE sign can be found that is made to enhance its surrounding area by looking like kayaks, seashells, and other beach items. Throughout Virginia, there are almost 300 LOVE signs for tourists and locals to take time to visit and take photos with. One particular LOVE sign in the Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg area is in downtown Fredericksburg, in Hurkamp Park on William and Prince Edward streets. The sign was designed by local artist Emma Madeleine Stoddard, who put much thought into creating each letter, adding many fine details that tie in the many aspects of Fredericksburg’s culture, art, and history.

Our content coordinator, Mallory Hardgrove, and her family stopped at the I-95 exit each year on their way home (first Maryland to her husband, Michael’s, family, and then to Pittsburgh for hers) for Christmas leave. “At first, it was just Murray and me, but when we stopped the next year, we decided to make it a tradition and asked some strangers to snap a photo of all of us,” she said. “I’m so glad we did. We now have a progression of how our family grew from beginning to end in just three years.” (Photo Credits: Michael Hardgrove & some friendly strangers)

Alleviating Chronic Pain Through Massage Therapy: A Holistic Approach to Wellness LINDA OSORIO, LMT, RYT AND OWNER OF BEAR RIVER MASSAGE THERAPY

I distinctly recall my first experience with professional massage. Struggling with excruciating pain in my right shoulder, as a single mom and waitress without health insurance, seeking relief without accruing medical bills became my mission. Rather than opting for pain medication, I pondered the idea of having someone massage my shoulder, prompting a quick search for local massage therapy services. Within 24 hours, I found a local therapist willing to see me. Affording only a 30-minute session priced at $50 in 2002, the prospect of being pain-free outweighed the cost. During the session, he pinpointed my pain and dedicated the majority of the time to that troublesome area. To my amazement, the relief and increased mobility were immediate, leaving me shocked at the transformative power of massage. As I handed over payment in the lobby, I couldn’t help but think, “I want to do this! I want to help people in pain when they feel they have no other options.”

The experience inspired me to pursue a career in massage therapy, driven by a deep desire to help others facing similar pain challenges. With chronic pain becoming increasingly prevalent globally, alternative therapies like massage have gained prominence in the last three decades. Contrary to the spa treatment stereotype, massage therapy offers a scientifically grounded approach to holistic healing. Here are the top five reasons to consider massage therapy for pain relief: 1. Muscle Relaxation: Massage promotes relaxation and increases blood flow, alleviating muscle tension—a common source of chronic pain. 2. Improved Circulation: Enhancing blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to muscles, aiding in the healing process and reducing pain.

NK Floors is a family-owned business with a vision to provide superior products and services, invest in the future through training and partnerships, and give back by helping others. We are a premier provider of nearly all types of flooring for both residential and commercial applications. We work alongside leading manufacturers. Typically, we can sell and install high-quality flooring for less. Our vision was birthed through our experience of flooring installation and sales, working with missions and people from different parts of the world, and our affinity for developing relationships with family and community. NK Floors owners, Nathan and Karie Owens, dreamed of establishing a family business built on Nathan’s outstanding skill in flooring installation. As a boy, Nathan installed all types of flooring, working alongside his father. His passion and knowledge for flooring installation inspired the family’s interest so much that it became a family business.

The Owens family and the NK Floors Team are committed to serving our customers and community. Serving inspires our company and us as individuals. We look for needs and seek ways to fulfill them. We are empowered by our faith to reach others. This has been true of our company and of our service to others all over the world. After faith and service, growth is our next inspiration. “If you are not growing, you are decaying.” Nathan often says. This is true of personal, spiritual, and company growth. We constantly seek ways to develop from where we are and reach goals to take us to the next level. This is where we get our motto, “Next level, precision flooring.” Our installation crews have grown from just one crew to over 50 crews. Our team members are certified flooring installers and are knowledgeable sales and customer advocates. We have a brand-new, beautifully accommodating showroom and warehouse and the ambition to install flooring in many businesses and homes in our community. The sky is the limit. From the second a customer makes first contact, through choosing the flooring to accommodate their needs, to the installation, and to the final walk-through, we know flooring. When selecting a product, we see the customer as an individual. We take the vision expressed during a consultation and work diligently to make it a reality. We factor in style preference, the product needed for the best outcome, and cost-effectiveness. Installation is an art, and NK Floors does it with passion and precision. We look forward to transforming your home from a distant dream to a present existence.

THE ART OF GIVING AT RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL BY JULIA PESNELL, PHOTOS BY HAVANNAH LADZEKPO, JULIA PESNELL, & ELLA STONEBREAKER

Throughout the school year at Riverbend High School, there are many opportunities for students, staff, and the families of Riverbend to give back to the community. The RHS clubs often host drives and fundraisers based on the students’ ideas. Recently, Riverbend has hosted a handful of successful events that were all great ways to give back to the community, from helping local families, to assisting those living in developing countries. SCA Sock-A-Thon The Student Council Association hosted a schoolwide sock drive to collect socks to donate to a local homeless shelter, Micah Ecumenical, located in downtown Fredericksburg. A competition was enacted to encourage students to donate socks, providing a Chick-fil-A meal for the winning class. To say that this drive was successful is simply an understatement! Throughout the Sock-A-Thon, over 1,000 pairs of socks were donated. The winning class was Mrs. Letellier’s 3rd block class, and this class alone donated 228 pairs of socks! Micah Ecumenical will now use the generous donations to help hundreds of homeless people around our community stay warm this winter. Toy Drive The Cancer Kids First Club at Riverbend was established to support and raise awareness for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Over the month of December, the club held a very successful toy drive to provide toys for children whose families may not be able to afford gifts during the holiday season. The club members placed boxes labeled “toy drive” around the school for a couple of weeks, announcing on the morning news the event of the toy drive and

asking students to consider donating new or gently used toys to benefit the cause. By the end of the collection period, over 100 toys had been donated by the students, faculty, and families of RHS. The Cancer Kids First club was able to use all of the donations to benefit the Toys for Tots program, run by the United States Marine Corps Reserves. As a result of the generosity of the Riverbend community, many children were provided with gifts for the holiday season! Water Bead Bracelets Another successful event in the RHS community was held by the National Honor Society, which teamed up with the local nonprofit E3Kids to raise money for water filtration systems in developing countries. The members of the National Honor Society made and sold colorful water bead bracelets to the students of Riverbend, making over $200 throughout the week. This money will be used to purchase water filtration systems for developing countries. This will benefit the people of these developing countries by providing more clean water, helping them health-wise, and providing better education opportunities for the children. This will help improve education because children in these countries often must walk long distances to collect clean water; therefore, they often don’t have time to attend school regularly. Holiday Hope Tree Each year during the holiday season, Riverbend hosts a collection event to help local families. A Christmas tree is placed in the counseling department and decorated with various gift tag ornaments. Each of these ornaments lists specific items needed for donation to help a local family. Any student, faculty member, parent, or guardian of a student can choose a gift tag to take off of the tree and then purchase the listed items to donate back to the counseling department to help the cause. The donations then get dispersed to the respective families, putting smiles on their faces and helping to brighten their holiday season!

THE WIN OF A LIFETIME:

RHS ALUMNI WINS $100,000 DR. PEPPER TUITION GIVEAWAY BY JULIA PESNELL, PHOTO BY AP IMAGES

Since 2008, Dr. Pepper has held a highly anticipated Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway. This event is held annually at each of the major college football conference championship games. For this much-anticipated event, fifteen current college students are selected to compete for $100,000, by throwing footballs into an oversized Dr. Pepper can in the allotted amount of time. Three of these selected students are assigned to each of the five major conference championships. For the 2023 round of the scholarship, Riverbend High School alumni, and current Ohio State junior, Gavin White, earned the opportunity of a lifetime, as he was selected as one of the fifteen competitors. White is currently studying Atmospheric Sciences at OSU and aspires to eventually become a meteorologist. To hone in on his passion for meteorology, White created his 60 second submission video to look like a mock weather broadcast. In the video he explained what he wishes to fulfill in his career and how the scholarship money will help him to achieve this goal. Upon submission, White had to wait, and remain hopeful as Dr. Pepper sifted through the submissions and chose the finalists. Finally, in early November, White received a call from Dr. Pepper informing him of his qualification as one of the 15 competitors. White was selected to compete at the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington, Texas on December 2, 2023. As you can only imagine, on the day of the game the anticipation had built up into pure nervousness inside of White. He says, “I was constantly jumping around and trying to shake out my nerves as best I could.” That was, until White and his competitor were sent out onto the field surrounded by hundreds of cameras and tens of thousands of fans. Suddenly he was

overwhelmed with a sense of calm that was, as he described, “...a kind of peace that can only be explained of as from God.” The competition began with multiple rounds of tying between the two competitors. Everyone was in disbelief because no one had been expecting the competition to go on for so long. White says, “Honestly, it was more shock than anything that we kept tying.” After a few rounds White’s competitor was declared winner and was awarded the $100,000 grand prize. White says, “I was disappointed in myself, but happy for my competitor.” However, no one knew what would spiral out over the succeeding hours as spectators had noticed a scoring error, in White’s favor, and took to social media to try and make everything right. Eventually, Dr. Pepper, seeing the uprising on social media, decided to award the $100,000 scholarship to both, White and his competitor due to the error. With this news, White says, “I was overcome with pure joy at that point, I think I even cried!” As a result of White winning this scholarship, he will now be able to graduate from Ohio State debt-free, and then he will continue on to receive his master’s degree in meteorology. White explains that once he earns his master’s degree he will be off into the workforce to work as a full-time meteorologist. When asked how it felt to watch Gavin compete and eventually win the grand prize, his parents comment, “There was certainly a mix of emotions. There was excitement, stress, shock, disbelief, just to name a few!” They went on to say, “It was such a surreal feeling to know Gavin had a mission to find the way to pay for college and he successfully completed that mission.”

Toilet Paper Gnome BY MORA SOAN, AUTHOR OF THE SERIES: ADVENTURES OF JACOB THE GNOME

Enjoy this fun activity based on the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed.

Directions: Step 1. Paint the outside of your toilet paper roll using a paint brush and your choice of paint. Step 2. While the toilet paper roll is drying, cut a few strands of white yarn making sure they are 2-3 inches. Step 3. Next, take a colored sheet of construction paper and roll from the corner inwards to create a cone shape. Tape the cone shut and cut off the remaining paper.

Craft Materials (makes one): • • • •

1 Toilet paper roll 1 Nickel sized wooden bead White yarn Colored pompoms

• • • •

1 Sheet of colored construction paper Paint brush Paint Hot glue gun

To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome. Do you have a crafting idea you would like to share? Email your art and craft idea to mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com.

Step 4. Touch your toilet paper roll and make sure it is dry. If it is, take your paper cone and place it on one end of the toilet paper roll covering the opening. The cone will be your gnome’s hat. Step 5. At the brim of the hat, take your wooden bead and hot glue it right where the hat ends on the toilet paper roll. Step 6. Under your wooden bead, take your strands of yarn and hot glue them directly under the nose. You can spread them out or clump them together depending on how you like the beard. Step 7. Decorate your hat however you like. You can add pompoms, stickers, or even just your own drawings. Step 8. Lastly, glue the hat on your gnome.
