Combined with overall construction costs, material and labor shortages insurance companies have resorted to drastic steps to restore their overall financial health. As a consumer what can I do to help mitigate these rising costs?

While you cannot dramatically affect these overall trends here are a few simple things you CAN do to help:

WHY ARE MY INSURANCE COSTS GOING UP SO MUCH?

As an independent insurance agent, the question I get asked most often by clients when they get their renewal notifications is “Why have the premiums increased so much over what I was paying last year?”.

There are many factors that influence insurance rates and there is not one simple answer to the question. Insurance is a complicated business and insurers use hundreds of factors to establish what “rates” they are going to charge you to insure you and your property. Let’s look at some of the factors that influence the two most common forms of insurance that most people purchase – homeowners and automobile insurance.

The simplest explanation comes down to two factors – costs to insurers to pay out claims and the increased risk environment we all live in these days.

Costs to insurers have been rising faster than the overall rate of inflation for several years now. As reported by Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/remarkable-surge-auto-insurance-costs-fans-us-inflation-2024-01-11/) consumer prices rose in the US 3.4% in December on an annual basis but with the rise automobile insurance costs had the highest annual increase in nearly half a century and contributed significantly to the increase and show few signs of abating soon. Motor vehicle insurance premiums rose by 20.3% in December year over year, the largest rise since the mid-1970s.

Some factors adding to the rising premiums are the increased costs of labor and materials to repair damaged vehicles and the overall rise in vehicles prices which increases the value of all vehicles directly affecting the price insurance companies must charge to insure them. The average cost of a new car was $48,247 in December 2023 according to Kelly Blue Book, directly leading to overall insurance rate increases.

Another factor is the increasing rate of accidents on the road. One only has to drive a heavily travelled highway like our own I-95 to witness firsthand the increased traffic and daily incidents to realize tis fact. With more accidents come more insurance claims with increased costs to repair or replace those vehicles. Something has to give, and insurance rate increases reflect that reality.

Homeowner’s insurance premiums reflect similar trends. As is all too familiar to anyone purchasing a home in this area the costs have been steadily rising. This directly affects homeowner’s insurance rates which, according to a Policy Center analysis, increased 21% on average, for homeowner’s insurance policy renewals from May 2022 to May 2023 (https://www.policygenius.com/homeowners-insurance/ why-did-my-homeowners-insurance-rates-go-up/).

Some factors other than the increased costs of building and repairing damaged homes are contributing to this rise. If you seem to notice an uptick in natural disasters, you are not imagining things. By September 2023 there were 23 billion-dollar disasters seeing an all-time record for the insurance industry. In the first six months of 2023 the property and casualty industry recorded over $24.5 billion in losses comparing to only $6.6 billion in 2022. While these losses tend to be concentrated in the western and southern states the overall insurance company practices is felt nationwide.

Shop around – there are literally hundreds of insurance companies to work with. Reach out to an independent insurance agent and have them analyze your current policies and obtain competitive quotes. While all insurance companies have increased rates, they all do so at various times and in different areas. As an agent I often see differences in premiums of over $1,000 per year between different companies to insure the exact same home or car for an individual. Insurance companies use hundreds of factors to determine the rate they may charge you -many having little to do with you. Insures limit their risk exposure by not concentrating their business in one local area, for example. Often switching to a company that does not have as many policy holders in your zip code can make a huge difference. The only way to find out is to shop around among many companies and an agent can do that shopping for you quickly. Another thing you can do is to look at your deductibles. Most car insurance policies are written with a $500 deductible – the amount you are going to pay yourself when you have a claim that is deemed your fault. Raising your deductible to $1,000 can drop your costs significantly. It is one way to lower your costs. While having to pay more out of pocket will hurt it may allow you to keep insurance more affordable for those times you really need it – like a major accident when losses can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Lastly, while many “like” their insurance company and are hesitant to change after sometimes being with them for years, you must keep in mind that all insurance coverages are pretty much the same and you should look at insurance somewhat like a commodity. So, get some comparative rates before you just decide to accept whatever your current company is offering you. It might just save you hundreds or thousands of dollars per year.

Meet the Alghabra Family Pillars of Support

T

he Alghabra family epitomizes unity and support.

Beata and Jalal found each other through mutual friends 23 years ago, and they’ve shared their passion for helping others since. Together, they have three children, each with their own admirable pursuits.

Their son, Ameen, has embraced the calling to serve his country. Drawn to the skies, he recently embarked on a mission to become a helicopter pilot. He is set to commission this month.

Their daughter, Lena, is a budding scholar at the University of Virginia who is studying science. Beata loves that she is “far away enough to be independent but close enough to know she has her family nearby as her unconditional support system.”

Unconditional support is a common theme for the Alghabra family. The couple and their children exude support in every aspect of their lives but especially in their professional careers. Beata fulfilled her dream of establishing Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg with her own efforts and determination, but she gives credit to Jalal as well.

“My husband is my partner in everything in my life,” Beata explained. “He is my world and I cannot imagine living life without him.

Jalal was “the backbone during the startup process of Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg,” and Beata said that she “could not have made this possible without his love and support.”

Jalal holds a master’s degree in medicine and is a PA-C at Fredericksburg’s Pinnacle Dermatology in addition to his administrative role at Synergy. Beata has an MBA and pivoted from the finance industry to healthcare to fulfill her passion of helping seniors age gracefully in the privacy and warmth of their own homes.

The warmth emitted from the Alghabra family is apparent to anyone who crosses their paths and their amiable and endearing personalities certainly serve them all well. The passion that the couple shares is obvious to onlookers as well.

“Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg is my baby,” Beata said. “If I am not in the office, I am out and about visiting clients and caregivers or doing something to enhance the quality of their lives.” The attention devoted to the caregivers is something that sets Synergy apart from other healthcare companies.

“I live and breathe my business. It is who I am.” Beata summarized. And it is a family business. As mentioned above, Jalal is involved as an administrator, but Ameen also plays a role.

“Our son has held an instrumental role within Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg as one of

our personal care aides that helps care for Veterans,” Beata explained. “As someone pursuing a life-long career in the Armed Services, spending time with our Veterans in the capacity that he does currently brings together a wonderful relationship.”

When they aren’t working, The Alghabras find joy in soaking up moments together at home with their dog and around Fredericksburg. Of course, they have a furry family member to share in the love, too. They have a 15-year-old American Eskimo, aptly named Eskimo, who is “still playful and rambunctious as ever— he just needs to sleep a bit more with a hint of snoring,” laughed Beata.

As transplants from North Carolina, the family moved to Fredericksburg when Jalal received the opportunity to work at Virginia Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center (now called Pinnacle Dermatology).

“We love living in Fredericksburg and we love living in Virginia,” Beata said. “[There’s] so much to do and see. The state changes— it has its own culture and vibe.”

The Alghabra family revels in the beauty of Virginia, enjoying the proximity to many beaches and soaking up the quaint downtown charm. They love sushi and steak, too, frequenting Texas Roadhouse often, complete with Beata’s cowboy hat, or enjoying a night out on the town, where they quickly run into friends.

“Fredericksburg has its own heartbeat, its own culture and rhythm,” Beata said. “The city and county are growing so quickly while maintaining its quintessential ‘small town’ feel. We don’t step out without running into someone we know.”

The family credits the public school system as well as the doctors and healthcare as contributing factors to the appeal of Fredericksburg. “Our public schools are some of the best in the state, and our teachers are knowledgeable and care about their students,” Beata said. “Our PTAs are involved, too.”

Their neighborhood, a close-knit community brimming with warmth and camaraderie, also became an extension of their family, as they enjoy their get-togethers and have become a “close community.”

The Alghabras do enjoy venturing out of the area, too, though, often exploring Europe, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, or just heading a bit south to the beaches of South Carolina.

The Alghabra family certainly exemplifies unity and unwavering support for each other’s endeavors. Their dedication to the elderly reflects their commitment to making a difference in the community. Amidst their professional pursuits, they find joy in each other’s company and cherish the warmth of their close-knit neighborhood in Fredericksburg, embodying the power of family and shared passions.

RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL: WINTER SPORTS RECAP

As winter sports wrap up, it is clear that the successes achieved during the fall season have overflown on into the winter. From the wins on the basketball court, to the accomplishments on the wrestling mat, to the records set on the track and in the pool, this season surely was one to remember.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team had an outstanding season despite having many of their key players struck by injury. They finished the season with a 16-7 overall record, placing second in their conference. They won their regional game to make it into the regional bracket. Through a hard fight, they lost a close game during the first round of regionals, 60-55, ending their season. Despite falling short of a state-bid, Coach Thomas Via was still proud: “I am very proud of our girls and the way they came to every game ready to play. It is an honor and privilege to be the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Riverbend!”

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team worked hard this season, making significant strides as a team. Coach Nathaniel Jackson said, “As we gained more experience we ended up winning 6 district games. We may not have won a lot of games overall but we competed and improved as the season progressed.” The boys finished the season with a 6-14 record. Jackson commented on the adversity that the team faced with numerous injuries, but despite this, the team showed up

to work their hardest each day and formed bonds that, as junior, and three-year varsity player, Jordyn Thomas described, were that of “family”.

Wrestling

The wrestling team stepped up this year, participating in many large tournaments throughout Virginia Beach and North Carolina. Head coach Nicholas Dolan said, “The greatest part of being a wrestling coach is developing young leaders. It is a great sport that teaches so much for life– humility, adversity, perseverance.” Overall, the team finished in 4th place in the 5A class, with multiple athletes ranking top 5 individually. Senior Jacob Mccollam was the district, regional, and state champion.

“My favorite part of the season was when I won states because it is an accomplishment that only a finite amount of people accomplish,” the heavyweight champ said. “It was also special because my family and all of my teammates were there to congratulate me and celebrate with me.”

The girls team also made huge progress this season with a few ladies reaching the state podium: Hailey Turner (114) finished 2nd in her class while Caitlin Rankin (120) and Samantha Wojowejkoski (107) nabbed 4th and 5th place, respectively.

Indoor Track

The track team had high standards to achieve, with the boys entering the season as defending state champions and the girls objectively improving each meet. The boys team had a truly remarkable season, placing 2nd in the district, 2nd in the region, and 3rd

in the state, as well as setting a new school record for the boys 4x800. Head Coach, Anedra Logan, explained that the team had a motto for the season of, “all or nothing,” and that they worked each day to fulfill that motto. Logan said, “Our athletes are focused, work together, and genuinely care about each other!” On the girls side, they saw enormous successes that have been a long time coming. They finished 2nd in the district, 1st in the region, and 8th in the state.

“I would have to say the girls winning the 5D Regional Title was the most impressive moment this year,” Logan said. “This was such a proud moment for us as they had been in the shadows of the boys’ success for years. They showed up and competed to clinch the title!” Junior Olivia Morra, who was a fundamental part of the girls team, had a truly phenomenal season as she became the region 5D champion for the two mile, as well as being one of the four legs of this season’s girls 4x800 team, who set a new school record. Morra said, “I feel really happy that we hold the 4x800 record now, since we worked so hard at practice and made it so far to states, and we definitely deserved it.”

Swim

This swim season, all 45 athletes who participated in pre-season and tryouts made the team, because, as Coach Rachael Adriani said, “they put the hard work in early.”

“This season was definitely one for the memory book in so many ways,” said Adriani. “For the first time in many years of coaching these kids were truly connecting to one another and bonding.” The swim team came out strong as a team at both districts and regionals, and had the opportunity to take a handful of athletes to states. RHS sophomore and state swimmer Noah Buttram placed 18th at the class 5 state meet in both of his events: 100 back and 500 free. When asked about the team’s successes, he said, “Our team has posted many great times and personal bests throughout the season… The road has been pretty bumpy… but in the end we preserved and ended with a fantastic season!”

The successes achieved by the Bears this winter season not only showcased their talent, but also put on display their immense amount of dedication and grit, as each athlete fought their hardest to become the best version of themselves whether on the court, mat, track, or in the pool.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!: Riverbend’s Rendition of The Complete History of America Abridged

Each spring, the Riverbend drama department puts on a production, either a play or musical, for the local RHS community. This year, the department chose to perform a magnificent rendition of The Complete History of America Abridged by Titchenor, Martin, and Long. This comedic retelling of United States history begins with the discovery of America and spans all the way to the present day. The production was filled with humor and was sure to make the audience laugh throughout the 90-minute performance.

Head of the drama department, Kelly Cresswell, said, “My favorite part of this production is the creativity the actors may express by playing a variety of different roles.” She went on to explain that she chooses each year’s production based on the current talent of the Riverbend Drama Department and the budget. Cresswell has been a teacher and director at RHS for 20 years.

“Twenty years ago, we did not have one set piece, prop, or costume. We started from the ground up. I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to build,” said Cresswell. It is true; the drama department has undoubtedly grown as talent for captivating performances keeps flooding Riverbend with each coming year.

One of the student directors of the production, Triniti Petway, said, “It is amazing seeing this play come together with the props, lights, and sound effects. I love seeing everyone’s hard work pay off and their excitement to perform!” As student director, Petway played a significant role, as Mrs. Creswell assigned her multiple scenes, which she directed by herself. This means she served as both a teacher and a role

model for the performers, blocking off, choreographing, and directing her assigned scenes.

For a production to come together, each actor, stage crew member, and director must work hours upon hours to perfect the performance. With all of this shared hard work and time spent together, the bonds between these students certainly do flourish during this time.

Each student agreed that the theater environment is a close and wholesome place to be. Performer Audrey Sieck said, “The community and the environment that has been created is absolutely fantastic. Everyone is so kind and all around lovely to be with.” Another performer, Marley Hancock, said, “My favorite part is probably how we all can goof off together but then can get back to working when we need to. Everyone creates an environment where you can be yourself and not feel judged.”

Another aspect many of the performers seemed to agree on was their favorite part of the production: the scene where two characters ride a motorcycle to Berlin, Germany, and get splashed with water and pied in the face.

“It is a hilarious scene that I always find myself enjoying,” Sieck said. Petway added that she likes the scene because “there are a lot of things being thrown on Spade– water, confetti, spaghetti.”

Ultimately, seeing the production come together was terrific for the audience and performers.

“Seeing a production come together is nothing short of rewarding,” Hancock concluded. “You and your teammates are working so hard and putting so many hours into this that when it’s ready, it’s amazing.”

“My biggest inspiration is my father, who passed away in 2018,” Grant shared. “He always wanted to bring joy and laughter to people’s lives. If we can rid pests from people’s homes, we can allow them to make happier memories as a family.”

“My brother and I are co-owners of the business, so I’d consider myself one of the luckiest people on Earth building a business with my brother,” explained Grant. “The fun is growing our company and reaching new milestones.” Grant was recently married to his wife, Ariana, and they have a Dachshund, Lola, to complete their family. Meanwhile, his brother, Spencer, is a co-owner and is married to his wife, Madi. Together, they’ve welcomed three boys to their family.

Central Virginia Horse Rescue was founded by Cindy Smith in 2010. She lived in Brunswick County and saw a sad mule at auction who was turned away. She found the seller and bought Rosebud in the back of a parking lot for $25. Rosebud lived with Cindy for four years.

The rescue was originally located in Brunswick, they now have a permanent home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. When Cindy was diagnosed with cancer it became harder to maintain the rescue.

That is when her daughter Stacy Franklin took over the management of Central Virginia Horse Rescue as the Executive Director.

Stacy learned to ride horses before she could walk. A horse rider since she was 3 years old, she has a true passion and empathy for these magnificent animals.

They bought their property in Fredericksburg in August of 2022, just shy of a year old, this organization has made a difference for horses in difficult situations.

The horses come from a variety of places; however, they prioritize animal control and always maintain a spot for these cases.

They also get their horses from owner surrenders and occasionally adopted horses return due to the change of circumstances of the adoptee.

They have a max capacity of 34 spots. Thirty of those spots are for the big horses and four are for the mini horses.

They currently have 21 horses at the rescue right now. They are a publicly founded organization. This rescue depends on the donations of the community.

When you donate to the Central Virginia Horse Rescue you are donating for the veterinary care of these horses, their feed, their specialized medication, and their rehabilitation needs.

Stacy gives thanks to the volunteers, as the rescue only has 2 part-time employees. Currently, they have a volunteer base of 300 people, and they continue to grow.

They want these horses to go to adoptable homes to live out their lives in serenity. The challenge is that some of these horses have been through some trauma or are retired horses and they are not for riding. They are truly companion animals who just need a field to graze, and to be groomed and loved on.

This is why they have a true focus on re-training the young horses who can still work a farm to protect them from ending up on auction or being euthanized due to lack of training.

If you’re thinking about adopting a horse, come to the rescue and meet them. Stacy says, to determine what you are looking for and know what the expectations are. Don’t try to make the horse fit into a box, it’s not designed to fit. The staff at the center will help match you with your forever horse. As a publicly funded organization, they are always looking for volunteers.

There are different ways to volunteer at the rescue.

1. Taking care of the horses

2. Marketing Help

3. Fundraising

4. Barn Maintenance

5. Lawn Maintenance

Restaurant Review: Bella Cucina at the Lake

Bella Cucina at the Lake is more than a restaurant. It’s a gathering place for family, friends, and conversation.

Mauricio opened up Bella Cucina in 2019 with his wife, Anna Mata. The restaurant is a family business. Anna “manages the business and keeps me in line,” he laughed. She is also responsible for their beautiful website. The couple has three boys, and they all have special birthdays. Anthony (12) was born one day before Mauricio’s birthday, Oliver (9) was born on Christmas Day, and Mauricio Jr. (7) was born on Father’s Day.

As you can imagine, the family is quite busy with the restaurant, but they enjoy riding horses and four-wheelers on their farm when they get the chance.

Mauricio says that all the boys have their interests, but he thinks Oliver is the one who will most likely take over the family business when he’s older.

Mauricio said, “I used to work for Macaroni Grill as a sous chef,” so he knew authentic Italian dishes– or at least Italian-American dishes and he saw the growth opportunity.

“There aren’t many options around here,” Mauricio said. “So I started the Italian restaurant to give people more variety and choices.”

“I feel like everybody here is like my family,” Mauricio said of the work environment.

Both the Mexican side and Italian side offer a comfortable environment for patrons.

“It gives people a place to come and talk,” Mauricio said. If you’ve ever been to Italy, you know that many places close mid-day for riposo (nap/rest time) and have limited hours in the afternoon, so having an Italian restaurant open for breakfast is an even more significant anomaly. Again, though, showing his business savvy, Mauricio saw the need. “There aren’t a lot of choices around here. People need a place for a nice breakfast,” he said.

Mauricio credited his landlord for being understanding during the pandemic. To stay afloat, the restaurant shifted from in-person to deliveries via DoorDash. He also credits the community for their patronage. “I am so grateful to everyone and want to thank everyone for their support during those difficult times,” he said.

When he saw the light at the end of the tunnel with COVID-19, however, he returned to his own heritage and added the Mexican side in 2023. “We have many loyal customers and friends, and I thank them,” Mauricio said.

Patrons can enjoy Happy Hour and various lunch specials on either side (Mexican or Italian).

If you want Mauricio’s favorites, try the pork carnitas or the pollo con chorizo, and add the peach margarita if you’re in the mood for a drink. On the Italian side, the house special for pizza is his favorite, and he also has a glass of La Bolla Chianti to wash it down.

But beyond the delicious food, what truly sets Bella Cucina apart is the sense of belonging it fosters. Here, guests aren’t just customers; they’re extended family members. Stop by, enjoy great food, and become part of the family.

The Gift of HOME

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Home Improvement?” Does it bring a smile with thoughts of endless possibilities to new heights and high hopes, or does it usher in a cringe with visions of an ongoing and expensive “to-do” list? Whatever your reaction, it’s time we look at this topic from a fresh vantage point. Our homes are more than a habitat and much more than a showcase. Our homes are our gathering place, our growing place, our place to connect, rejuvenate, and thrive. No matter the family size, culture, life stage, or circumstance, we must return to nurturing our homes. We must see it as a vessel of something far more valuable than brick and mortar. Home needs to become our happy place again. Not just for ourselves to enjoy but also as a place to share with others.

Where should we begin when we think of making this “gift” to ourselves and others come alive? Is it a newly constructed deck or wrap-around porch where family and friends play games and grill? New siding boasts an inviting color that draws you in and welcomes you home. Would it be a quiet refuge of an edition for a reading room with warm sunbeams dancing through the window panes? A finished basement with a guest bathroom and bedroom would bless all who stay with you. They would never forget a home away from home. Would your kitchen be where memories are made, and tastes savored? Intimate lighting and an inviting fireplace go a long way for relaxation. A lush carpet to bury your toes and earthy hardwood for your furry friend to scamper. Do you desire a primary bedroom that would go beyond your wildest dreams? It all

comes down to what is essential to you. This is your space, your story to create, and with endless inspiration and finite funds, you must define and prioritize your goals.

Once your ambitions are defined and arranged in a hierarchy of absolute wants and dire necessities, look at what can be done now and what might need to wait until later. Shop around and start pricing different companies for the upgrades you long for and the space you need. It is fantastic to get a good deal, but you can’t put a price tag on quality products, excellent craftsmanship, and having done it right the first time. Plan your work and work your plan, but don’t forget to enjoy your current home while dreaming about the look and atmosphere you desire to obtain. During the planning stage, evaluate your living and storage areas and declutter. This assessment of the value of objects we are attached to may be a purging of the soul more than it is of possession. This process will revitalize you and your home. Posting a few more oversized items for sale that no longer match your style or life stage may contribute towards the renovation budget.

Get to know your personal style, not just what the latest home designer or influencer thinks is captivating, but what says, “This is me; come and experience me and stay awhile.” Begin collecting a portfolio of ideas and samples of key pieces. Take photos and capture the process. Great joy comes from progress, not perfection. Behind each change is a tale. What or who sparked your inspiration? Who helped you select the right paint tone, and what adjustments can be made in the future? Ideas will continue to evolve during the process. Let others catch a glimpse of your renovation story. Share your ideas, spark interest in others, and invite collaboration. A knowledgeable sales associate or design specialist, like the team members in our showroom at NK Floors, can accompany you. Allowing others in on the journey may make your ending point more beautiful and meaningful.

If you aspire to unwrap your gift of a home or improve, restore, or embellish the one you have, you can do so with excitement! Home improvement is treating yourself to new experiences, relationships, and connections with those you love the most. Our homes are more than buildings and material things. They are who we are. Start small, dream big! The gift of home is waiting!

23rd USCT 160th Anniversary of Their First Skirmish

Steward T. Henderson is the co-founder of the 23rd Regiment United States Colored Troops, a living history organization representing that regiment and other regiments of the United States Colored Troops. He is also a member of Company B 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Steward is a member of the Emerging Civil War and has written blogs for their website and essays in a few of their books. He is a seasonal park ranger for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. He is a battlefield guide for Battlefield Tours of Virginia and a member of the newly organized African American Civil War Era Round Table.

May 15, 2024, will mark the 160th anniversary of the first skirmish of African American soldiers in action against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. This action was during General Ulysses Grant’s Overland Campaign, which began eleven months of action that ended with General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. The first two battles were fought on two of the battlefields in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park - Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House.

During the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the 23rd Regiment USCT was at Chancellorsville, guarding wagon trains on May 15th, 1864, when the 2nd Ohio Cavalry asked for assistance. General Thomas Rosser’s Confederate Cavalry Brigade attacked them. General Edward Ferrero marched the 23rd at the double quick to the intersection, now known as the Catharpin and Old Plank Roads intersection. They formed a battle line, fired on the Confederate army, and drove them away. They became the first African American soldiers to fight in “directed combat” against the Army of Northern Virginia. The white soldiers of the 2nd Ohio cheered them, now they knew that these Black soldiers would fight against the Confederates.

May 19th, 1864, General Ambrose Burnside commanded the IX Army Corps. The 4th Division of the corps, the African American division, will fight in another skirmish against Rosser’s Cavalry. His cavalry probed the Union lines closer to Fredericksburg, General Ferrero ordered his entire division to attack. Once again, they drove away the Confederates. There were few casualties in the two skirmishes. General Ferrero issued reports on each of the engagements.

Here is an excerpt of the first report that is included in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion:

“HDQRS. FOURTH DIVISION, NINTH ARMY CORPS, Miller’s House, on Plank Road east of Alrich’s, May 15, 1864

GENERAL: I have the honor to report that at 12:30 p. m. this day

The Second Ohio cavalry, stationed at Piney Branch Church, were compelled to fall back, being attacked by superior forces, consisting of one brigade of cavalry, with two pieces of artillery. I immediately ordered the Fourth Division in readiness and marched the Twenty-third U. S. Colored Troops to support the cavalry. On arriving at Alrich’s, on the plank road, I found the Second Ohio driven across the road, and the enemy occupying the cross-roads.

18 | NEIGHBORS OF CHANCELLORSVILLE
Community

I ordered the colored regiment to advance on the enemy in line of battle, which they did, and drove the enemy in perfect rout. Not being able to pursue with infantry, the Second Ohio formed and gave chase to Piney Branch Church, which they (the Second Ohio) now occupy.

I am, general, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

The 23rd USCT has a Virginia State Marker in commemoration of their skirmish at the entrance to the Sawhill Development on Catharpin Road in Spotsylvania County. They have an exhibit at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center and an exhibit panel on the Spotsylvania County African American History Trail. A picture of the 23rd is on the mural at the Spotsylvania County Supervisors meeting room. Fredericksburg has just put a new panel on its Civil Rights Trail, which features the 23rd USCT living historians for recreating the 1871 historic multiracial procession to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. The Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail is now a part of the United States Civil War Trail.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Nestled along the beautiful banks of the Rappahannock River, Fredericksburg, Virginia, overflows with history and natural beauty. Attracting many tourists and residents, with its unique nature, it truly is a serene place. With an increasingly modern outlook, it is important to strive each day to preserve the charm of the area so that future generations are able to enjoy the captivating allure of Fredericksburg that we currently relish in.

If one thing is certain, consistently taking small steps will gradually build up to make a large positive impact, and there are a few prominent steps that you can begin to take in order to preserve our beautiful Fredericksburg!

Green Spaces and “Leave No Trace”

Green spaces are areas set aside in an otherwise urban environment for purely recreational purposes. We have many delightful green spaces around our area, from athletic fields at Loriella and Patriot parks, to walking trails at Pratt park, and much more throughout our vast 10.5 square miles.

Taking advantage of these green spaces is important, as the more populated they are, the more likely that they won’t be overtaken by industry. Whether taking children to the park, going camping, or having a picnic in nature, the more involved we are in these green spaces, the better.

However, with this, the “leave no trace” concept strongly comes into play. This motto became prominent in the mid 1900s as industry continued to spike and ecological damage was becoming a common occurrence. It was put in place to encourage an ethic

movement in the US to begin to preserve nature. This motto still stands strong today meaning that we must leave minimal human disruption as we come into contact with nature. This includes, picking up our trash, not harming wildlife or plants, and acting to preserve historical landmarks.

Recycling

As simple as it seems, recycling has a gigantic impact, conserving resources and keeping the environment clean. Setting up a recycling bin for your household can be rather easy, and especially beneficial towards the environment.

Consistent recycling helps with sustainability, as we live in a culture where disposal after use is common. This makes the urgency of raising the standard of recycling an ever-growing importance.

Community Involvement

Becoming actively involved in community activities, especially those taking place outdoors, will make a huge impact on Fredericksburg’s preservation efforts, as residents learn more about the community, become more connected to it, and therefore begin to better strive to preserve its beauty.

Locally, Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation holds many events for all age groups, and a large range of interests. As the weather begins to warm up and we shift into the late Spring, to the left is a list of a few activities that Parks and Recreation will be holding soon.

To find the full list of activities, visit the activities catalog on the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Events website.
