A Word from the Publisher

Goodbye April, hello May! Summer vacations and graduation dates are coming soon. Speaking of graduations, we want to congratulate our student writer, Zoe Stoler, on her upcoming Park Vista High School graduation and acceptance to the University of Central Florida (and more importantly, holding the title as our publication’s longest student writer!) Nine years has gone by far too quickly.

My advice to all our upcoming graduates is to be a contrarian and to do whatever it takes to set yourself apart from the pack. A wise man named Warren Buffett one said, if you want to be successful, “Be fearful when others are greedy. But be greedy when others are fearful.”

Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 11th, so this is an advance warning to plan something extra special for mom. You’ll find great gift-giving ideas inside this month’s issue, as well as our expanded listing of local restaurants in our ‘Great Eats Beat’ section starting on page 24.

And Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26th. This is a federal holiday, so many of us will enjoy a three-day weekend. But everyone should take time to reflect on this solemn day and acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many brave souls who died while serving our nation.

If you reside outside of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News is direct mailed to each month, we also offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll receive our issue each month to read on your phone or computer. Oral Health Affects Entire Body

You could have the most beautiful smile in the room, but a serious condition could be developing around your pearly whites right now. Gum disease can sneak up on you at any age. What's more, bacteria from gum disease have been linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, certain cancers, worsened blood sugar control in people with diabetes, and, of course, they can cause tooth loss.

Bacteria in the mouth play a part in the formation of the plaque that adheres to teeth. It needs to be removed by brushing and flossing. If plaque is allowed to stay on teeth, it can harden along the gumline and harbor bacteria.

Tissues at the gumline may become tender and prone to bleeding. Caught early, this gingivitis is reversible with better home care and dental cleanings. If the condition isn't reversed, pockets develop between the gums and teeth. As the pockets deepen, and bacteria thrive, infections can form under gum tissue and result in tissue loss, bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

You can keep the whole process from starting by brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Use a mouthwash that contains thymol, as in Listerine and generics. Have regular dental cleanings and checkups. Other risk factors for periodontal disease progression include age and medications that reduce the amount of saliva you produce. These drugs include antihistamines, antidepressants, antihypertensives, and others.

Arlington Memorial Amphitheater

On Memorial Day, the day set aside for honoring those who gave their lives for our country, no place is more central to this than the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater. Located at Arlington National Cemetery, the outdoor amphitheater attracts thousands of visitors every year for its moving 11 a.m. service, held every Memorial Day since 1920.

In the center of its eastern steps is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded around the clock by the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, "The Old Guard." The marble-clad amphitheater seats 4,000, with standing room for another thousand. The main stage has three levels, each of which directs the gaze of a speaker to a klismos chair. The klismos chair is always empty, facing the audience as a reminder of the missing heroes honored by the monument.

When the cornerstone of the amphitheater was laid, a box was sealed inside. Some of the articles it contained were a Bible, The Declaration of Independence, The U.S. Constitution, a map design for the city of Washington, D.C., one of each U.S. coin and postage stamp used in 1915, a 1915 U.S. Flag and an autographed photo of President Woodrow Wilson.

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26th. It is a federal holiday and a time to pay tribute to the brave souls who fell, but we rejoice in their proud memory and in the democracy they bravely defended.

The Battle of Cinco de Mayo

The 5th of May is a day for both Mexicans and Americans to celebrate. On that day in 1864, Mexican soldiers soundly defeated the French army at Puebla, Mexico during the Franco-Mexican War.

The French had landed in Mexico five months earlier on the pretext of collecting outstanding debts that newly elected President Benito Juarez had recently defaulted on. The French brought the Hapsburg prince, Maximilian, with them to rule a new Mexican empire. But the Mexicans had other plans.

Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, the Mexicans, outnumbered by more than two to one by seasoned French troops, engaged the French cavalry. The French soldiers charged through mud from a thunderstorm, dodging hundreds of stampeding cattle stirred up by poorly armed indigenous people. It was a small but wildly inspirational victory for Mexico, and four days later, President Juarez declared the ‘Battle of Puebla Day’ or ‘Battle of Cinco de Mayo’ a national holiday.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is surprisingly more celebrated in the U.S. than in Mexico. The date has become associated with celebration of Mexican-American culture and generates beer and food sales at restaurants and celebrations that rival the Super Bowl.

Factors that Hike Car Insurance Rates

Your age, your marital status, and even where you live can affect the cost of car insurance, but there are other more obscure factors too. Most people know that a single 18-year-old man who drives a Mustang GT and lives in downtown Miami will definitely pay more for car insurance than a 40-year-old woman who drives a Honda CR-V and lives in rural South Dakota.

If that young man adds some traffic tickets to the mix, or an accident, insurance costs can soar. But there are less wellknown factors that can make a big difference in cost. If you use your car for business, driving multiple places during a typical week, you can get tagged with pricey commercial insurance rates. The same is true with a long commute or high annual mileage over 15,000 miles per year.

City dwellers pay more because they cope with more traffic and higher risks of theft, vandalism, and other crime. A low credit score can increase premiums since insurers think credit scores indicate financial responsibility. And multiple insurance claims can mark you as a high-risk driver.

Even state laws can raise premiums. States with higher minimum coverage requirements (Michigan’s no-fault system, for example) can significantly increase premiums. State peculiarities can make a difference. Louisiana, for example, stands out from other states for its abundance of law suits and plaintiff-friendly courts, according to The American Tort Reform Foundation.

The Power of Compound Interest

Recently out of college? The best thing you can do for your retirement is to save money every month and keep doing that for the next 40 years. Time and consistency are the two keys to taking advantage of a financial power that turns small investments into big ones. The name of this secret power? Compound interest.

With compound interest, you earn interest on the money you invest initially, as well as the accumulated interest from previous periods. The longer you keep your money in a compound interest account, and the more consistently you add to it, the more money you’ll make.

According to Kiplinger, if you invest $1,000 at an annual interest rate of 8 percent, you'll earn $80 interest after the first year. The next year the interest is calculated not on your original $1,000 but on $1,080, so your total becomes $1,166.40. When you see the effect over decades, the small amount turns into a pretty big amount.

If you invest $500 per month beginning at age 25 at 8 percent, you end up with about $1.7 million by age 65, but your contributions would be just $240,000. On the other hand, even if you wait until 35 to start saving the same monthly amount, you'll still end up with a balance of $714,000, having contributed $180,000.

So, while it’s never too late to start saving and investing for your future, the earlier you start, the bigger your nest egg will become.

Hot dogs are the quintessential American summer food. Cookouts simply wouldn't be the same without them. But like so many iconic American foods, the hot dog is so much more than just lunch -- it reflects the story of America itself.

Traditionally, the German city of Frankfurt-am-Main gets the credit as the birthplace of the first frankfurter in 1487, but they're not the only city that claims the hot dog. Some say that the wiener is named for Wien -- the Austrian city that English speakers call Vienna.

The frankfurter (or wiener or little-dog) sausage came to America in the 19th century with immigrants from Germany and Austria. The first hot dog stand (as far as we know) opened in 1871 on Coney Island. The proprietor, a German baker names Charles Feltman, did a brisk business selling sausages with rolls, moving more than 3,600 in just the first year. In 1893, hot dogs found their spiritual home: The baseball park. German immigrant Chris Von de Ahe, owner of the St. Louis Browns major league baseball team, started selling them during Browns games.

The origin of the name "hot dog" is something of a mystery. According to one popular legend, hot dog vendors at the New York Polo Grounds accidentally coined the name in 1901 as they shouted "Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" during an unseasonably cold April day. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year, Americans eat an estimated 7 billion hot dogs.

Preparing to Sell Your Home

Once you decide to sell your home, you might have questions about how to prepare it for listing and viewing by potential buyers. An agent who is a REALTOR® can guide you through the process.

How do I find the right agent to sell my home? You should feel empowered to find and work with the agent who is the best fit for your needs. When you work with an agent who is a REALTOR®, you are working with a professional guided by ethical duties under the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, including the pledge to protect and promote the interests of their clients.

Do I need to have my home inspected before putting it up for sale? No, a pre-inspection is not required. However, an inspection before showing your home to potential buyers can be used as a differentiator for your property.

What should I do if something needs to be fixed or replaced? If something in your home requires a significant repair-- such as a roof, HVAC, or appliances, you should determine how much the repair will cost, even if you do not plan to fix it before selling your home.

Am I required to make any cosmetic updates? No, but you may want to clean the windows, carpets, lighting fixtures, and walls, store away any clutter, and clean up the landscaping if needed. The entrance to the home makes the first impression, and impressions last, so make it count with a space that is welcoming and sets the tone for everything beyond.

Submitted by the Boynton Beach CR A

There are two harmful bills moving quickly through the Florida Legislature. HB 991/SB1242 would eliminate all Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRAs) by 2045 and ban new projects starting October 1, 2025.

Why does this matter? CRAs are essential tools used by local governments to fight blight, improve infrastructure, expand affordable housing, and support small businesses— without raising taxes or using state funds. These projects lift up neighborhoods and create jobs while boosting the local economy.

What’s at risk if this bill passes in July 2025:

• Strip millions of dollars from local redevelopment and revitalization efforts.

• Stall projects that build affordable housing and revamp struggling areas.

• Eliminate opportunities for small businesses and local job creation.

The Boynton Beach CRA helps revitalize neighborhoods, supports business growth, and improves quality of life. These bills threaten our ability to continue that work. YOUR VOICE MATTERS! Help us flood the inboxes and phone lines of our state representatives with local voices who believe in the power of community. Visit BoyntonBeachCRA.com for ready-to-use scripts to call and email decision-makers.

Tips for Preventing Pests in the Kitchen

Below are some helpful tips on how to prevent pests in the kitchen:

• Seal cracks & holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities & pipes.

Honor Thy Mother

May 11th

The honoring of mothers has been practiced through the ages. Early Mother's Day celebrations are said to have occurred in ancient Greece, when ceremonies honored Rhea, the mother of the gods.

In the 1600s, England began celebrating "Mothering Sunday." It began as a day when servants, who lived and worked in the great mansions, were allowed to return home and spend time with their mothers.

A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. Examples:

—Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

—I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

—To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

—The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

—Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

—I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

In the U.S., during and following the Civil War, Ann Jarvis made a concerted effort to foster friendship and community between the mothers on both sides of the war. She started a committee in 1868 which established the first glimmer of today's holiday: "Mother's Friendship Day."

After Ann’s death, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, launched a nationwide campaign to establish a national Mother's Day in 1907 to honor her mother’s work. She persuaded the members of her deceased mother's church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death. It was the second Sunday of May.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued the official proclamation that Mother's Day was to be a national holiday held each year on the second Sunday of May. This year, Mother's Day falls on May 11th. So be sure to plan something special for Mom, especially if you are lucky enough to have her close by.

Sleepmaxxing— New Health Trend

Another new health trend, courtesy of TikTok. It's called sleepmaxxing, an elaborate multi-step nighttime routine designed to enhance sleep quality and quantity, according to CNN Health.

One user's routine includes blue light-blocking glasses, red light therapy to simulate sunset, vitamin D and magnesium tablets, magnesium ointment applied to the wrists, organic cotton bedding, an eye mask, a nose strip to open the sinuses, and mouth tape to prevent mouth breathing.

Other maxxers add a precisely timed shower, sauna and meditation, and even kiwi fruit. All of this begs the question: Is this a sleep strategy, or just another social media fad? It's both, according to Harvard Health. Some of the sleepmaxxing essentials are just good basic sleep hygiene. According to CNN, experts have long agreed that you'll sleep better if you don't drink caffeine or alcohol before bedtime, sleep in a cool and dark room, and turn off the screens.

Some of the newer hacks lack evidence to support their use but carry few risks. Several sleepmaxxing hacks, however, may actually worsen sleep or pose health risks. Mouth taping can be dangerous for people with obstructive sleep apnea or collapsed airways. Supplements, unnecessary for most people, can mask more serious sleep disorders. If you're experiencing real sleep issues, consider calling a doctor before sleepmaxxing.

My Next Chapter Begins…

I truly thought that the month of May would never arrive, but here it is, and I’m living it. My last month of high school, my last month before the next chapter in my life, college.

I remember back in August how I hoped that the year would go by slow, so I could enjoy it all before it was gone. But now that the end of high school is here, I really wish I had more time.

Starting as a freshman, I thought four years was so long, but it feels like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye. Now that Gradbash and Prom have passed, it feels like it’s just a countdown to graduation.

As excited as I am to be going off to college at the University of Central Florida, I have a deep, melancholy feeling at the thought of leaving high school behind and all the great experiences I had. I know that I will always hold on to those memories forever.

I’m thankful for all the academic accomplishments I’ve made in high school, specifically receiving my AICE Diploma, and the opportunities I’ve had at making new friends and the amazing experiences with them. As much as it hurts to say goodbye, I’m beyond excited for my next chapter to begin.

Mastering Skills Beyond the Mat

Family-owned and operated, Senjutsu has proudly served the Lake Worth/Boynton Beach area for over 20 years. Every instructor is trained from within the school, never hired from the outside — ensuring that students receive the highest quality guidance from people who live the Senjutsu philosophy.

At the core of Senjutsu is Randy Ibarra, a third-generation martial artist and the school’s owner and head instructor. Carrying the family legacy into the next era is his son, Brandon Ibarra, a fourth-generation martial artist who has already made a name for himself as a professional MMA and kickboxing fighter.

Senjutsu offers more than world-class martial arts training. From after-school pick-up programs to day camps and summer camps, the school provides a safe, structured environment for youth to grow in confidence, discipline, and character. And students of all ages — from young kids to adults — are becoming champions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Karate, while learning valuable life skills that extend far beyond the mat.

Both rabbits and eggs were signs of fertility in Germany during the Middle Ages. It was during this time that the legend of an egg-laying, candy-giving hare was born. But the Easter Bunny didn’t actually become a beloved tradition in America until the first Germans immigrated to the Pennsylvania Dutch Region in the 1700s. Word quickly spread that an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” left eggs

While the tradition of dyeing eggs at Easter began as a religious practice, the custom of decorating these eggs comes from a Ukrainian craft dating back thousands of years. These fancy eggs, called pysankas, are painstakingly crafted using wax and dyes, a process Ukrainian immigrants brought to

In Australia, there is a long-running campaign to replace the Easter bunny with the Easter bilby. The bilby, an endangered species thanks to feral cats, is a little smaller than a rabbit. It has a long nose and ears almost as big. A portion of the profits from selling chocolate bilbies goes to protection and research of this

And in Switzerland, rather than a visit from the Easter Bunny, children look forward to a visit from the cuckoo

The academy also offers group classes, private lessons, and specialized women-only self-defense courses. Senjutsu invites you to stop in and try a complimentary class — no pressure, just a chance to see what makes this school so special. Visit Senjutsu Martial Arts at 6680 Lantana Rd., Suite 8, in Lake Worth (just west of Jog Rd. next to Apex Automotive.)

Showing Gratitude for Educators

“Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” –Japanese proverb

Assignments have been given, final grades will soon be recorded, and summer will soon be here. But before the school year ends, now is a great time to thank educators for all their hard work.

National Teacher Appreciation Week begins May 5th through May 9th, though some school districts celebrate the week at different times. It’s a week-long celebration in recognition of teachers and the valuable contributions they make to education and society.

The week provides an opportunity for students, their parents, and principals to show their appreciation for the long hours so many teachers put in. Many educators receive thank you gifts and notes of gratitude from their students during this week, and schools organize events and celebrations to mark the occasion.

The movement to recognize teachers began in the 1950s with the efforts of a teacher, Mattye Woodridge and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt was able to persuade Congress in 1953 to establish a National Teacher Day. But the National Education Association later expanded the single day to a full week-long celebration in 1986.

Whether you send a small gift or thoughtful card, please let the teachers in your life know just how much they’re appreciated!

High-Tech Heist for the History Books

The worst mistake you ever made at work can't compare to the one that Ben Zhou, CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange, Bybit, made on Feb. 21. Zhou merely approved a routine transaction, transferring a large amount of the digital currency Ether into another account. Just 30 minutes later, Bybit's CFO dropped a bomb: Their systems had been hacked, and cybercriminals had looted all of Bybit's 500,000 tokens, worth about $1.5 billion.

According to the New York Times, it was the largest cryptocurrency heist to date. Within a few hours, blockchain analyst ZachXBT had identified the attackers: the notorious North Korean state-backed Lazarus Group. The hackers' approach was surprisingly mundane, according to CCN. Bybit relied on free software to safeguard customer deposits. Experts say that the widely-used software, developed by the technology provider Safe, is fine for individuals and hobby traders, but wasn't appropriate for protecting billions in customer deposits.

After the attack, Bybit customers withdrew nearly $10 billion, about half its total deposits. Zhou rushed to reassure them that their funds remained available and secure. Three days later, Bybit had recovered $1.23 billion worth of stolen tokens and frozen more than $40 million in still-missing funds. But despite the rapid recovery, the incident still rocked the crypto markets.

There are national security concerns too. Twenty percent of those funds, or about $300 million, vanished. It's impossible to say how the North Korean government will use the stolen funds.

Use Caution with QR Codes

We use QR codes to access menus, board an airplane, or pay for broccoli at a farmer's market. But, according to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers are using QR codes to steal. It's an updated form of phishing called quishing. Scammers cover up legitimate QR codes with fake ones or send the malicious codes via email or text message. But the code doesn't link to a legitimate website. Instead, users go to spoof websites where they unwittingly enter their personal info. And in other cases, the link may install malware on the victim's device.

Watch for these common signs of a scam QR code:

•A QR code on a sticker placed over another QR code in a public place.

•Text messages or emails claiming to be government, such as a demand to pay unpaid tolls.

•Warnings about undelivered packages.

•Communications about suspicious account activity or password changes.

•A package you weren't expecting labeled with a QR code.

•Messages from unknown senders.

Never scan a QR code if it's suspicious or if you aren't sure it's safe. Instead, use your phone’s camera app to preview the attached URL. If it doesn't match the message or contains odd misspellings (like Amazan instead of Amazon), don't scan it. The digital security company Aura also advises smartphone users to avoid downloading QR code scanner apps, which can be loaded with malware themselves -- instead, use your phone's own camera app.

Top-Secret Spaceplane Returns

T here were no crowds of onlookers to cheer the return of a secret space plane in March, but U.S. Space Force personnel are now releasing some information about the X-37B. After 434 days orbiting Earth and completing its classified tasks, the robotic spaceplane dipped through the atmosphere and landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. According to Ars Technica, the return, just like the mission itself, was a closely kept secret.

Thus concluded the seventh X-37B mission, which began at Vandenberg on Dec. 29, 2023. It wasn't the longest mission to date -- the spacecraft previously spent 909 days in space between May 2020 and Nov. 2022 -- but this time the federal government has offered some rare disclosures about what the unmanned X-37B can really do.

For this mission, the Space Force chose a more powerful rocket than it had for previous missions -- the Space X Falcon Heavy rocket, which provided extra power to propel the space plane greater distances. And unlike other spacecraft that jettison their payload and contribute to the growing problem of hazardous floating "space junk" in Earth's magnetic field, the X-37B returned with the Falcon Heavy still intact and reusable.

The space plane conducted "aerobraking" maneuvers for the first time during this mission, which are designed to alter a spacecraft's orbit while minimizing fuel burn. Specific mission goals remain classified, but broadly speaking, this mission was designed to improve the Space Force's ability to defend space if warfare ever goes there.

Tariff Exemption Blamed for Chain Closure

Forever 21 may become just a memory after the fast fashion chain filed for bankruptcy for the second time in six years. Forever 21 will soon close all 350 U.S. stores and liquidate. According to NBC News, the brand experienced a steep decline after its 2015 peak, when its sales topped $4 billion. Its heavy reliance on brick-and-mortar stores and the impact of inflation placed it at a disadvantage against internet-based competitors like Shein and Temu.

But, a critically important component in the fashion war was the de minimis tariff exemption. Competitors Shein and Temu ship dirt-cheap garments directly to U.S. shoppers from Chinese factories. The already low-cost goods are dramatically cheaper thanks to the de minimis exemption that waives tariffs for overseas packages worth less than $800.

With Shein, for example, a chiffon blouse might sell for $10 and, on sale, it could arrive in the hands of an American teen for $5. Forever 21 might sell a similar blouse for $15 on sale. A retailer like Forever 21 couldn't use the exemption because it buys large quantities and then distributes to stores. Without the exemption, Forever 21 might have been able to compete on price.

In 2024, over 1.36 billion shipments entered the U.S. under this exemption, with Shein and Temu leveraging it heavily. About 70 percent of textile and apparel imports come via this route. A decade ago, just 140 million shipments arrived with the exemption. Today, these direct-to-customer shipments have shifted the retail landscape.

Navigating Through Ultra-processed Foods

The new secretary for Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has called out "highly chemically processed foods" as a target in his war on chronic disease, like diabetes and obesity, according to the Associated Press. It's important to understand that not all processed foods are created equal. According to Harvard Medical School, there are three key terms to understand:

* Unprocessed or minimally processed foods. These are in their natural state with the nutrients intact. A minimally processed food may be altered by drying, crushing, cooking, freezing, or pasteurizing.

* Processed foods. These foods are altered from their natural state with the addition of salt, oil, sugar, or other components -- for example, canned vegetables. Most foods in this category have only a handful of ingredients.

* Highly processed or ultraprocessed food. These foods contain many added ingredients (sugar, salt, fat, dyes, preservatives and artificial flavors.) Ultraprocessed foods are made with substances extracted from foods, like starches and added sugars. Deli meats, most prepackaged foods, and soda all qualify. Numerous studies point to some kind of connection between certain types of ultraprocessed foods and negative health effects. In an interview with the Associated Press, Aviva Musicus, science director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, advises people to worry less about labels like "ultraprocessed" and instead pay attention to added sugar or high sodium.

Mindfulness Meditation for Better Health

"Mindfulness meditation" is the act of paying close attention to your thoughts, feelings, actions and body sensations in an objective, non-attached way. Doctors at the University of Wisconsin say it is a proven pain reliever because pain has emotional and cognitive aspects. When you recognize pain as something you can overcome by your own actions, certain areas of the brain produce fewer signals that are interpreted as pain.

Just five minutes of mindfulness meditation can be helpful. A 2014 meta-analysis by Johns Hopkins researchers (Goyal et al., JAMA Internal Medicine) found mindfulness meditation programs reduced anxiety and depression by around 20–30 percent.

In another study from the University of Wisconsin, subjects who took an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program showed increased levels of brain chemicals like serotonin and GABA, associated with a happy, calm state, after completing the course. The meditators also showed improved immune responses, such as reduced inflammation markers.

Mindful walking can also be a successful stress reliever. Pick a quiet place in your home and walk slowly back and forth or in circles. Look ahead and focus on your steps as you move forward. Keep your mind on your feet. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. A 10-minute session is recommended.

Simpler Approach to CPR

Cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are both emergency procedures aimed at saving lives during cardiac arrest, but they differ in approach and focus.

Traditional CPR combines chest compressions with rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) to maintain circulation and oxygenation in someone whose heart has stopped. It’s been the standard for decades and used by both laypeople and professionals. The American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines emphasize chest compressions (at least 100-120 per minute) with minimal interruptions, alongside ventilation in a 30:2 compression-tobreath ratio for adults when performed by trained individuals.

Cardiocerebral resuscitation, developed in the early 2000s, is a simpler approach that may be best for bystanders. CCR prioritizes continuous chest compressions to maximize blood flow to the brain and heart. During the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, there’s still enough oxygen in the blood—circulation is the priority. Studies suggest CCR may improve neurologically intact survival in certain cases. Brain damage starts within 4-6 minutes without oxygen, and CCR’s focus on uninterrupted compressions may protect the brain better early on.

CCR is tailored for adult cardiac arrests of cardiac origin, not respiratory causes (e.g., drowning, drug overdose) where oxygenation from rescue breathing is critical. The AHA hasn’t fully replaced CPR with CCR but has incorporated CCR-like principles. Hands-only CPR is now standard for untrained bystanders, reflecting CCR’s influence.
