Goodbye March, hello April! For those of you with kids at home, we hope everyone had a fun, actionpacked Spring Break!
Our Jewish neighbors will celebrate Passover beginning at sundown on Saturday, April 12 until Sunday night, April 20th. The holiday commemorates the Israelites’ miraculous liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt (see page 12.)
On Sunday, April 20th, Christians will celebrate their holiest day of the year, Easter. This day commemorates the day God’s son, Jesus Christ, rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven (see page 7.)
Earth Day is on April 22nd. This is a great day to do something to help the environment. You can participate in a beach or community cleanup (or start your own.) Also, you can read more about Palm Beach County’s new recycling enforcement program which starts this month (see page 11.)
And lastly, the Neighborhood News is proud to once again be one of the sponsors of the 13th Annual Ride4Orphans charity bike ride that is being held on Saturday, April 26th. This is one of our area’s most prestigious, scenic rides with multiple courses to choose from (see page 41 for registration information.)
If you reside outside of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News is direct mailed to each month, we also offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll receive our issue each month to read on your phone or computer. Christianity, for more than 2,000 years, has rested on one belief: That Jesus Christ, the one and only begotten son of God, died and rose again. Here is the account of the resurrection paraphrased from the gospels of Luke and Mark...
On the morning after the Sabbath, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, the mother of James, and others, went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. They found the massive stone that had sealed the tomb had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and did not find Jesus.
Two angels in shining garments appeared to them and told them not to be afraid. The angels asked, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again."
The women returned from the burial tomb and told these things to the apostles. Peter and others ran to the tomb and found it empty. Later Jesus appeared a number of times to Peter and the other apostles before his ascension into Heaven.
There are other accounts in the Bible of people being resurrected by Jesus, like Lazarus for example. But none is as important as Jesus’ resurrection to eternal life!

A bankruptcy filing, a famous flop, or a notorious scandal is rarely a good sign for the future of any business. But some companies survive hitting rock bottom and climb back up to the top of their game.
Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios have put out some of the highest-grossing films of all time in recent years, but according to Business Insider, Marvel spent much of the 1990s on life support. Desperate to rustle up cash, the company even sold off the film rights to iconic characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men (which were extremely profitable for Sony). But the 2008 release of Iron Man catapulted Marvel back into the limelight.
Online streaming was still in its infancy back in 2011 when Netflix decided to separate its streaming content business from its DVD subscription service -- which received the new name Qwikster. Netflix lost 800,000 subscribers after the announcement and its stocks crashed. But two years later, the first original streaming series, House of Cards, premiered to critical acclaim. Netflix rode the wave back to streaming prominence.
LEGO is the most valuable toy company in the world today, but it was on life support back in 2003 with $800 million in debt and stagnant sales. According to the Ravix Group, the company found success again when it turned its focus back to toys and proactively engaged with fans to solicit ideas and stir up excitement. These days, LEGO has once again expanded beyond just making toys with hit movies and popular digital platforms, with very different results.

Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense fear and physical symptoms that can make the sufferer feel as if they're dying. According to the Cleveland Clinic, most people experience them at least once or twice during their lifetimes, and they occur regularly for some. They're an extreme example of the physical toll that stress can exact on us. These symptoms are almost always treatable but can be difficult to recognize as stress related:
• Jaw pain. Teeth-grinding to rid ourselves of built-up stress and anxiety is common, and we often don't even realize that we're doing it. In addition to jaw pain and dental problems, it can lead to headaches, and pain in the neck and shoulders.
• Digestive problems. Stress can ramp up stomach acid production, which can lead to a host of digestive ailments including nausea, heartburn, and diarrhea.
• More frequent illness. Your immune system can also take a hit from excess stress, which leaves you more vulnerable to illness.
The Mayo Clinic encourages people to find active ways to try to manage your stress, like taking walks outside. A balanced diet, healthy sleep habits, and making time for hobbies can also help balance out our stress. If your physical symptoms are severe or fail to resolve with lifestyle changes, see your health care provider.
Palm Beach County Commissioners unanimously approved what’s believed to be the state’s first recycling enforcement program. The county will still outsource their recycling collection program to SWA, but the county’s new fleet of 1,700 automated electric garbage trucks will now be able to detect if any recyclables are discarded in regular trash receptacles.
The electric trucks, equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and AI powered cameras, can detect how many recyclable items are included in less than 1 second. Homeowners will then receive a violation notification and scan of their receptacle’s noncompliant items by email or monthly billing statement.
After three violations in a 30-day period, a $50 fee is assessed to the homeowner on record, and additional violations within the same period are charged $25 per item. The controversial program, which is already in effect in California, has received mixed emotions.
“The county is claiming the program will reduce their costs and encourage proper recycling, but these fines can cost homeowners hundreds of dollars each month,” said Boynton Beach resident Ralph Nader.
And while everyone should make a point to recycle whenever they can, this is an April Fool’s Day joke—Now go fool your friends!
The celebration of Passover in the Jewish community begins at sundown on Saturday, April 12. It is an eight-day celebration that honors the freedom and exodus of the Israelites enslaved by the Egyptian Pharaoh. During the final plague, the Israelites are told by God to mark their doors with the blood of a lamb so the angel of death would ‘pass over’ their homes and spare their firstborn children from death.
This is a time for family, rejoicing, and the retelling of Hebrew history. This feast, also known as Pesach, is the first of three major festivals. Pesach in Hebrew means 'passing over,' in reference to how God passed over the houses of the Jews in Egypt while punishing their captors.
The name Pesach is also the name of the sacrificial lamb offered in the Temple before the Exodus of the Jews. Another name for this observance is Z'man Cherutenu, which means 'the Time of Our Freedom.' The Fast of the Firstborn is observed on the day before Passover. Firstborn Jewish males fast to commemorate that the firstborn sons of the Israelites were spared in Egypt.
Seders are observed on the first two nights of Passover. At Seder dinners, the youngest child of the household traditionally recites or sings the Four Questions. The teaching exercise begins by asking, "Why is this night different from all other nights?"

When selling a home, sellers must disclose certain characteristics of the property to potential buyers. A REALTOR can help you understand what you need to disclose, but here are the basics.
Seller disclosures are certain material defects of the home that may negatively impact its value. Sellers are typically required to list any completed repairs, information about natural hazards, and property defects.
The seller's disclosures are essential because they help both the buyer and the seller. The disclosures can influence the offer amount, and it also allows the buyers to choose whether or not they want to make an offer based on what the sellers are disclosing about the property. For sellers, the disclosure can help protect them from legal liability, meaning they will not be responsible for any issue that arises on the property after the sale as long as it was previously disclosed.
Which defects, if any, need to be disclosed? Consult your real estate professional to help understand what defects need to be disclosed. While it is not required, you can also conduct a home inspection before listing, which can identify potential issues that you can consider repairing before showing your home. If you uncover possible issues that may appear during a buyer's inspection, you will have time to make necessary changes that could impact your home's asking price. For more information, contact Sheryl Volk at 561-389-8670.

Hearing health is essential to overall well-being, yet often overlooked. At Hearing Space, we help individuals protect and maintain their hearing. Recognizing the causes and early signs of hearing loss is key to staying connected to the sounds and people you love.
Hearing loss can result from aging, noise exposure, infections, or medical conditions. Early signs include:
• Difficulty Understanding Conversations: Struggling in group discussions, especially with background noise.
• Muffled or Distant Sounds: Voices may seem unclear or like mumbling.
• Frequent Requests for Repetition: Asking others to repeat themselves, even in quiet settings.
• Increasing TV or Phone Volume: Loved ones may mention it's too loud.
• Struggling with High-Pitched Sounds: Trouble hearing children’s voices, alarms, or doorbells.
• Ringing in the Ears (Tinnitus): Persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing.
Our team provides comprehensive evaluations, personalized treatment plans, and advanced hearing aid technology. Prioritizing your hearing health keeps you connected to the world around you. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit www. hearingspace.com or call 561-582-0268.
Most people love the idea of getting a tax refund check from Uncle Sam. Of course, you know that it's really your own money that you overpaid during the year, so spend it well. Here are a few suggestions to putting a $1,000 tax refund to good use:
• Stash it. In case of a calamity or job loss, you could need the money.
• Put it in an IRA. You'll be doing something nice for your future self.
• Buy a new front-loading washing machine. It will save up to $100 in water and electric costs every year since they use 50 percent less water and 45 percent less energy than a top-loading washer.
• Buy a family gym membership. You'll save money on medical expenses. A person 5 feet 10 inches tall who weighs more than 209 pounds spends an average of $1,429 more on health care in a year than someone weighing 174 pounds.
• Add it to your mortgage payment. Save thousands over the life of your mortgage.
• Pay the $1,000 on your highest interest-rate debt. The interest you save, say 20 percent, is the same as getting a guaranteed 20 percent return on any investment. Twenty percent is now the average credit card interest rate.
•Wednesday April 2 & 9, Lent Services at 4pm & 7pm.
•April 13, Palm Sunday, Palm Recessional at 10am.
•April 17, Maundy Thursday with Holy Communion and stripping of the Altar at 7pm.
•April 18, Good Friday, Tenebrae worship (service of silence) at 7pm.
•April 20, Easter Sunday Sunrise Worship with Holy Communion at 8am.
•April 20, Easter Sunday Festive Worship with Holy Communion at 10am.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is the most iconic instance of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. In October 1940, German officials decreed the establishment of an 840-acre ghetto in Warsaw, the capitol of Poland. The decree required all Jewish residents of Warsaw to move into the designated area. The population of the ghetto was over 400,000 Jews. Between 1940 and mid-1942, 83,000 Jews died of starvation and disease. Over 200,000 Jews were soon to be deported to the Treblinka extermination camp.
On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began after German troops and police entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. Some 700 poorly equipped Jewish insurgents inside the ghetto resisted these efforts. Others hid in underground bunkers. These resistance fighters fought off the Germans for nearly a month. It is believed that the Germans lost several hundred men in the uprising.
By May 16, 1943, the Germans had crushed the uprising and deported surviving ghetto residents to concentration camps and killing centers. Marek Edelman (1922-2009), the last surviving leader of the uprising, has stated, “Resistance was a choice of how to live in the moments before we died.” We can learn a lot about courage and resilience from the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
On Saturday, April 26th from 10 am 12 pm, join us at Faith Church (located at 6340 W. Boynton Beach Blvd. in Boynton Beach) for a fun-filled, purposeful event—Rise Against Hunger! We will be packaging 10,000+ meals to feed people suffering from food insecurity.
Rise Against Hunger, a well-known and well-respected global charity which coordinates these life-saving events will be our coordinator. This community event is the result of a joint effort of Blessings and Bargains Thrift Shop, First Church, and Faith Church and Preschool, and we invite everyone in our community to help us help others, which we gladly do in Jesus’ Name.
Working together, we’ll make a significant difference in the lives of families who - without our assistance - might not otherwise survive. Aside from a loving heart, no experience is necessary to volunteer.
For more information and to volunteer (pre-registration is required so we know how many volunteers are coming), please visit www.BoyntonBeach.Church. Donations are also gladly accepted via a secure registration portal. In order to purchase, package, and ship 10,000 meals, we have committed to raise $4,600, which covers all the costs. Jazz it up in April to celebrate National Jazz Appreciation Month. Jazz is an historical, cultural and living American treasure. That's why the Smithsonian Institution launched National Jazz Appreciation Month in 2001 to pay tribute to jazz as a living art form. It has grown to include celebrations in all 50 states and in 40 countries.
The Smithsonian houses a huge jazz collection that includes Duke Ellington's unpublished music, Ella Fitzgerald's red dress, Dizzy Gillespie's angled trumpet, and Benny Goodman's clarinet.
Jazz comes in many forms: ragtime, bebop, the blues, soul, Dixieland, big-band, fusion, Latin, funk, and the list goes on. JAM, as the month-long tribute is called, encourages every musician, concert hall, school band and orchestra to offer special programs.
Duke Ellington is considered one of the most important big-band leaders, and he became hugely popular. He was responsible for making jazz an art form similar to classical music. Ellington received 13 Grammy awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a commemorative U.S. quarter.
This month, how about streaming all the old tunes by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne or Nancy Wilson? Steep yourself in the swing rhythm, polyrhythm, improvisation and syncopation that represent the almost exclusive characteristics of jazz music. April—Time

By Zoe Stoler, Senior at Park Vista High School
It’s hard to believe that four years of high school will be over in just under two months. I remember walking through the school doors for the first time and thinking four years was so far away, but now I’m nearing my end goal. The last home stretch of high school is here, and it’s filled with some pretty exciting events.
The week before spring break was senior spirit week, which included dress-up days such as senior citizen day, dress as a kindergartener, and wearing your college gear. I recently committed to the University of Central Florida, so I went all out with my Knights college gear. The week ended off with the last school pep rally.
The events coming up this month are the most fun in my opinion. First, we have Grad Bash. Grad Bash is a trip to Universal in Orlando, where the park closes just for seniors of various schools, and they enjoy all the rides from about 5pm to 3am. Universal is one of my favorite places to go because of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and now I get to experience it again with all my friends.
After Grad Bash is Prom. My school only does Senior Prom so this will be my first and last prom, and I plan to make it the best. I’m beyond excited to get all dressed up, take lots of pics, and have the best time dancing with all of my friends. But after Prom comes the dreadfulness of AP (Advanced Placement) exams, of which I will be taking five this year. Once my exams are completed, it’s just one last final push till I graduate.
The last day of school for seniors is May 8 and then graduation. The day I finally get to walk that stage is May 19. It’s bittersweet that it’s all coming to an end. But I’m going to make the most of the two months I have left and am excited for my new college chapter to begin.

How does the Easter Bunny stay fit? Eggs-ercise!
What do you call a rabbit who tells jokes? A funny bunny!
What did the Easter egg say to the other egg?
“You crack me up!”
What’s the Easter Bunny’s favorite restaurant?.... IHOP!
What do you get when you cross a rabbit with a frog.... A bunny ribbit! What do you call a rabbit with fleas? Bugs Bunny.
What’s a bunny’s motto?
Don’t worry, be hoppy! How do you make Easter easier in just one simple step? Replace the T with an I.
Both rabbits and eggs were signs of fertility in Germany during the Middle Ages. It was during this time that the legend of an egg-laying, candy-giving hare was born. But the Easter Bunny didn’t actually become a beloved tradition in America until the first Germans immigrated to the Pennsylvania Dutch Region in the 1700s. Word quickly spread that an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” left eggs and sweets in good children’s hats on Easter morning.
While the tradition of dyeing eggs at Easter began as a religious practice, the custom of decorating these eggs comes from a Ukrainian craft dating back thousands of years. These fancy eggs, called pysankas, are painstakingly crafted using wax and dyes, a process Ukrainian immigrants brought to America in the 1940s.
In Australia, there is a long-running campaign to replace the Easter bunny with the Easter bilby. The bilby, an endangered species thanks to feral cats, is a little smaller than a rabbit. It has a long nose and ears almost as big. A portion of the profits from selling chocolate bilbies goes to protection and research of this important creature.
And in Switzerland, rather than a visit from the Easter Bunny, children look forward to a visit from the cuckoo bird to deliver their eggs and treats on Easter.

A German Shepherd, a Labrador and a house cat all died one day. Once they were in Heaven, all three stood before God, who wanted to know what they believed in.
The German Shepherd said, “I strongly believe in discipline, training, and complete loyalty to my master.”
“Good!” said God. “Please come sit at my right side.”
“And Labrador, what do you believe in?” asked God. The Labrador answered, I believe in the unconditional love, care and protection to my master.”
“Excellent,” said God. “You can sit down here on my left.
Then God looked at the cat and asked, “And what cat do you believe in?”
The cat looked up and calmly replied, “I believe you are sitting in my seat.”

There are plenty of people that are not happy with their eyelids. It’s often because gravity is always working, and as we age, the upper eyelids may become droopy or show excess skin. As we get older, the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelid, particularly the levator muscle, weaken causing the lids to sag. Other potential causes can include genetics, nerve damage, myasthenia gravis or other medical conditions.
The question becomes, are droopy eyelids considered medically necessary or is it just a cosmetic desire? This question comes up quite often in eye doctor offices. So, then the real question is, will insurance pay to repair droopy eyelids?
Here’s the answer; if after an eye examination, there is some obstructed vision, then many times insurance will cover the cost to repair the eyelids. Obviously there are different levels of droopiness.
Medically, it’s called ptosis repair, or blepharoplasty, and it’s a rather common operation. In order to find out if droopy eyelids will be covered by insurance, the optometrist or ophthalmologist will do a visual field test to determine if the lid or lids are blocking some peripheral vision.
Unfortunately, the surgical procedure will not last forever. The improvement will generally last around 10 to 15 years. However, if you do not want to go through surgery, there are other ways to help. Dermal fillers, Botox, and laser resurfacing are other options used for tightening the skin around the eyes.
Looking to add a new, furry friend to your family? Look no further than Bailey (A2216353)! This sweet boy came to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control (PBCACC) as a stray last year. Sadly, he is currently the longest resident at PBCACC and would love to find his new family!
Bailey is a handsome, 2-year-old boy who is incredibly playful and is much softer than he appears at 70 lbs. He loves other dogs and is always ready for a playdate! Additionally, Bailey loves people (everyone!) and LOVES the water! Give him some sprinklers or a pool and he’s one happy camper!
PBCACC’s kennels are open every day at noon, so come on down to meet Bailey and all of the other amazing pets here! For more information on PBCACC’s services, please visit www. pbcgov.org/animal or call 561-233-1200. PBCAA is located at 7100 Belvedere Rd. in West Palm Beach.
