Groundhog Day has captured the hearts and attention of people around the world. Every year on February 2, people eagerly await the emergence of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter.

The origins of Groundhog Day can be traced back to ancient European traditions, particularly Candlemas Day. This Christian holiday marked the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It was believed that the weather on Candlemas Day could predict the arrival of spring. If the day was sunny, winter would persist; if it was cloudy, spring was on the way.

When German settlers arrived in Pennsylvania in the 18th century, they brought with them their own tradition known as Grundsaudaag, or Groundhog Day. They believed that if a hibernating animal -- like a groundhog or badger -emerged from its burrow on February 2 and saw its shadow, winter would endure for six more weeks.

The town of Punxsutawney embraced this tradition and held its first official Groundhog Day celebration in 1887. The town offers several days of celebration for those who gather from around the world to hear Phil's proclamation and offers food, music, carriage rides, magicians, and games.

Broken Hearts Can Regenerate

There is no cure for heart failure, although there are now drugs that are able to slow its progression. But a new study suggests that the heart might actually improve on its own if it just gets some rest.

The study recently published in the journal Circulation offers the first hope for a new way to treat, or possibly even cure, heart failure.

University of Arizona researchers investigated whether heart muscle can regenerate, much like an injured leg muscle heals after time. They found that some patients with an artificial heart pump actually regenerated heart muscle cells at a rate six times greater than healthy hearts.

Researchers speculate that because the heart pump bypasses the heart, it is like putting the heart on bed rest, giving it additional bonus time to repair itself, something that can't be done while the heart is working. It is now believed possible that some patients may even be able to have the pump removed, depending on their regeneration progress.

Only about 25 percent of patients in the study responded with cardiac muscle regeneration. Additional research will now primarily focus on whether all patients might be able to have muscle regeneration. But researchers say such a thing would essentially be a cure for heart failure in the not-toodistant future.

Catching Up on Confusing Geography

Two Chinas, two Koreas, two Sudans, and don't call it Turkey anymore. And maybe you were just too busy to read the news when Eswatini retired their old name. But it's not too late to catch up on changing geopolitics.

• The People's Republic of China is a state in the Asian mainland, while the Republic of China is on the island of Taiwan.

•You don't hear about Swaziland anymore, and that's because it's been the Kingdom of Eswatini since 2018, which reflects the name commonly used in the Swazi language.

•The Korean Peninsula contains two countries, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea. You know them as North and South Korea. Both claim sovereignty over the entire peninsula.

•Just south of Sudan, you'll find South Sudan, which declared its independence in 2011.

•After a 27-year argument with Greece over their name, the Republic of North Macedonia formally adopted its name after a 2018 agreement with Greece and an ensuing referendum. The agreement stipulated that North Macedonia would remove Alexander the Great's name from the Skopje airport.

•It's Turkiye now, you turkey. In 2022, the Turkish government requested that the United Nations begin using Turkiye instead of the anglicized Turkey as part of its rebranding effort. Among the reasons for the change: They were tired of the association with the bird.

You are Getting Sleepy…

You say you don't drive for long hours at a time and you're rarely behind the wheel in the middle of the night. So falling asleep at the wheel can't happen to you. That would be wrong. If you think about it, you'll have to admit there have been times when you were drowsy while driving your vehicle. Though you didn't realize it at the time, your brain was at risk of shutting down and you were becoming as impaired as if you were drunk, say doctors at the University of Minnesota.

There are two sleepy periods in each 24 hours. The first is between midnight and 6 a.m. The second is from early to midafternoon. You might blame what you had for lunch for the sleepiness, but your biological clock is responsible. Quoted in Reader's Digest, doctors at Washington State University's Sleep and Performance Research Center say the following signs indicate that you are too tired to drive...

Continually yawning, being irritable and uncomfortable in your seat, your mind wanders with disconnected thoughts, being unable to remember driving the last few miles, and lastly, when your driving becomes sloppy and you have trouble staying in your lane.

Opening the windows, turning up the radio or stopping to stretch might help a little, but these things won't keep you awake if you skimped on getting enough sleep. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recommends always stopping for a caffeinated drink if you feel sleepy, then napping for 20 minutes while you wait for the caffeine to take effect. Sleepy drivers are responsible for 23 percent of all crashes.

Washington—Father of the American Mule

He's known as the father of the country and hero of the America Revolution, but George Washington has another title that is a bit less known: Father of the Mule in America.

When he returned from the war, Washington found resources scarce and funds low. His crops had failed, too. So, he came up with a plan. He wanted to breed mules for American farming. A mule (the sterile offspring of a male donkey and a female horse) could work longer on less food and water than a donkey or horse.

The problem was Washington wanted a Spanish ‘Andalusian’ donkey to start his herd and that was difficult to come by since Spain limited the export of its high-quality donkeys. Finally, the U.S. chargé d'affaires in Spain let Spain's Charles III know of his desire and two of their renowned donkeys were dispatched to Washington in 1785.

Only one donkey survived the trip and Washington named him Royal Gift (a less sentimental name than that of his dog, Sweetlips) and set about creating his herd. Fifteen years later, he had amassed 60 mules. The mules, which are unable to reproduce due to having an odd number of chromosomes, quickly became the preferred farm animal in the American South, where they were reputed to be able to plow up to 16 acres per day.

New Year, New Home in 2025

This is the time when a lot of people take a moment to reflect and set their goals for this year. And as you picture what you want your 2025 to look like, one thing that may pop into your mind is the vision of you in a new home. Where do you start?

Focus on Your Why. While the dollars and cents are important, so is the driving force behind your desire to move. Maybe it is for more space, maybe you want to sell to downsize. Your why is what helps you focus. Share your motivation with your Realtor. They will use their expertise to help support that goal.

Get clear on what you need so you can then figure out what your next home needs to have. How many bedrooms, a designated home office, a big fenced yard. Knowing your must haves and nice to have makes the search a lot smoother.

Know your numbers. Before you jump in, take a look at your finances. How much do you have saved? What monthly payment feels comfortable? Get pre-approved for a mortgage with a trusted lender so you know what you can borrow. It can be hard to know where to start, but you don't have to do it alone. More than ever, it's smart to lean on the guidance of an experienced real estate agent. Remember, buying or selling is a big milestone and a great goal for this year. Contact Sheryl with over 25 years as a trusted, experienced Realtor with any questions you may have.

Deliberate Practice—Key to Greatness

That is the conclusion of legions of experts and research, into why people are successful. What counts isn't necessarily the genetic factors that make you smart or quick witted. What counts is work. Psychologist Jordan Peterson notes this in his lectures. "In any field, there are people who are phenomenally gifted, and then if they work really hard, they break records. But, that talent apart, hard work actually works with virtually everything,” he says.

In fact, researchers studying talent and success found little evidence of talent in high-achieving individuals before they had intensive training. The findings show up in every kind of endeavor and in business people, artists, sports figures, and others. The researchers don't say talent doesn't exist or help, but that practice and diligent work are more important to success.

"Deliberate practice" designed to improve performance is the key. It includes continually stretching yourself just beyond your current capabilities. You have to identify what needs to be improved and work intensely on them. For deliberate practice to be effective, do what is difficult and painful. Seek out what you are not good at.

In the beginning, you should have a teacher guide you and give feedback. It may seem that the most important things you can do to improve in your work are not fun. But if the activities that lead to greatness were enjoyable, everyone would do them. Bottom line: If you think you aren't highly talented in an area, you can still become great by learning and practicing deliberately.

The Era of Subscription Creep

Fourteen years ago, anyone could buy Windows or Adobe Photoshop. Though the one-time fees could be steep (Photoshop started at $699 in 2010), users owned their license outright after money changed hands, with no additional transactions required. If you miss those days, too bad -- we're in the subscription era, and that essential software is only available as a rental.

What drives the tech industry's enthusiastic embrace of the subscription model? The first reason is no surprise: It's the money. According to ZDNet, subscription fees generate more predictable and stable revenues than onetime purchases and encourage customer loyalty (even when the customer doesn't like it).

There are other practical reasons -- cloud-based computing doesn't necessarily lend itself well to a one-time purchase model, and a single payment may not balance out the perpetual technical support that consumers have come to expect. Software subscriptions also offer greater flexibility for businesses, which can simply pay for the licenses they need and avoid enormous one-time fees for every employee.

But consumers can quickly find that subscription fees — for software, music, Amazon, streaming video, and the million other tiny features and services that cost just a few dollars on their own -- add up quickly, straining household budgets. According to CNet, consumers are suffering from "subscription creep," which bleeds more than $1,000 each year from their wallets. Individual subscriptions are easy to forget about and often unnecessarily difficult to cancel, which may prompt consumers to resort to another subscription service -- one that finds and cancels unused and forgotten subscriptions.

In theory, almost anything can be a subscription, and plenty of companies are testing the waters with new and novel ways to make us pay for things we used to own outright. Take the car industry, for example, where automakers are toying with monthly fees to activate heated seats or allow you to use all the speakers installed in the car you already purchased. But according to MotorTrend, that sales model may still be a bridge too far -- it seems that consumers really detest paying extra to use features that they already own.

Will AI Machines Have Feelings?

The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution raises questions that used to exist only in science fiction. Will AI replace artists and writers? Is it any good at diagnosing diseases? What if it decides to deploy nuclear weapons?

Some researchers have bypassed these relatively pressing questions with some slightly more abstract concerns. If humans succeed at developing artificial intelligence that truly thinks like humans, they ask, will it have feelings or the capacity to suffer? According to Forbes, negative emotions like fear or anxiety could impact how it completes certain tasks and processes. For example, what if an AI system designed to make stock trades started panicking every time the stock market dipped? Could an AI-powered self-driving system develop road rage?

It sounds ridiculous, but they may have a point. According to the journal Nature, the implications of an artificial consciousness are too serious to totally ignore, and humans should figure out how to identify it in the (possibly unlikely) event that it really happens. And in that case, there are still more questions to answer, like how humans should treat a sentient machine and whether it deserves rights.

Researchers aren't hoping to find emotions that are unlikely to exist -- instead, they want to develop a process to know for sure that they don't, so that humans don't devote time and resources to caring for machines instead of each other.

Ideally, an MBA -- short for masters in business administration -- is an investment in your future that will give you higher earnings potential. According to MBA. com, there are costs, such as tuition, books, and fees, along with missed earnings you may lose while completing coursework.

If you leave a job that pays $95,000 annually to attend a full-time MBA program for 12 months that costs $85,000, your total investment is $180,000. Assuming you secure a higher-paying $125,000 job after you finish your degree, you'll recoup your investment in about six years.

You may have additional incentives to pursue your MBA, such as tuition reimbursement from an employer, which can reduce your portion of the costs. The earnings potential might also be significant -- according to the Harvard Business Review, the average starting salary for MBA holders last year was about 30 percent higher than the salary for those with only a bachelor's degree. You'll also gain valuable job skills, find opportunities to grow as a leader, and build crucial connections with other program alumni.

But not everyone thinks an MBA is worthwhile, even if your employer pays for it. Writing for Forbes, entrepreneur Paulina Karpis commented that MBA curricula are increasingly archaic in today's economy, and the benefits often don't match up with the inflated costs. According to Business Because, the total cost of an MBA at the vaunted Harvard Business School was a staggering $245,000 in 2024.

The Cost of Being Late

Tardy people always have their reasons, but the price of being late can be high. It's the traffic, the weather, a broken alarm. Your dog is sick. You name it; the reasons are legion, but in the end, tardiness is the fault of the tardy.

Most chronically late people consistently underestimate needed time by 25 to 30 percent, says Diana DeLonzor, author of Never Be Late Again (Post Madison). Optimism is good, but not when determining how long it will take to drive through traffic and park your car. You have to allow a safety margin to account for unforeseen delays.

One researcher found that people don't get motivated far enough ahead of their deadlines. Since missing deadlines has economic and social consequences, other people are often forced to monitor the work of the chronically late person. Psychologists once thought the tardy were late because of avoidance and anxiety. That proved not to be true because the same people were late arriving at events they enjoyed.

Tardiness is contagious. When others know you will be late for a meeting, they will be late too, wasting time for those who were punctual. Late people are more likely to change punctual people than the other way around. Some offenders say being late makes them feel important because everyone has to wait for them. Usually, however, they lose respect.

The Clock is Ticking on TikTok

One of the biggest social media platforms for Gen Z is TikTok, which allows users to create, share, and discover short videos. Originally known as Musical.ly, the platform was bought by ByteDance, a Chinese company, in 2016 and renamed TikTok.

Over the years, TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms among teens. The app has produced fame for users such as Charil D’Amelio who has 155 million followers. Other users that have claimed fame through TikTok are Addison Rae, Chris Olsen, Alex and Kouvr Warren, and Vinnie Hacker. These TikTokers have gained millions of followers through videos they do. Whether it’s dancing, GRWM (Get Ready With Me), or just creating funny videos, they are incredibly popular.

Congress passed the bipartisan law last April to ban the app in the U.S. due to the app representing a national security threat. And the Supreme Court recently decided to uphold the law, which stated that TikTok would be banned in January 2025.

Famous YouTuber, Mr.Beast, had expressed interest in collaborating with billionaires to purchase the social media platform from ByteDance. Tik Tok was just given a 90-day extension, but the fate of the popular platform is up in the air. Will someone in America buy the platform to prevent it from going down?

Do You Need Cataract Surgery?

After changing my eyeglass prescription three times in six months, I was frustrated that my vision was still blurry, and I didn’t feel safe driving at night. So, 2 years ago I had both eyes operated on to remove my cataracts. As an optician, I talk about cataracts every day, and my patients are often fearful of surgery and put off having the procedure. I tell them when your vision is still blurry, even with new glasses, and the doctor says it’s time to remove your cataracts, don’t wait.

Cataracts never get better so there’s no point in delaying the inevitable. Medicare covers cataract surgery and basic implants. When I first got into the vision business, surgery was a hospital stay and a big deal. And implants were just beginning. But surgery these days has become seamless and very easy.

Many doctors recommend laser (at an additional cost), but it’s really not necessary. Also, there are many different lens options, and it can be confusing. If you get the basic implant, you will absolutely need reading glasses. If you get the multi-focal implants, you probably will not need any glasses. But there may be halos or glare at night. Also, the cost can be about $8,000 for both eyes if you choose the upgraded lens options.

I’m very happy with my outcome because my distance vision is excellent. But as I expected, I do need reading glasses. We are fortunate that we live in Palm Beach County because we have many terrific cataract surgeons here.

The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

The six encounters between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta (1942 -1951) may be the most intense in boxing’s history. Robinson (173 – 19 – 6) was, and still is, regarded as the greatest boxer to have laced on a pair of gloves. LaMotta - nicknamed the Bronx Bull (83 – 19 - 4) - was widely known as a brawler inside the ring.

Robinson dominated the first fight which took place at Madison Square Garden. Four months later in Detroit, Robinson attempted to slug it out with LaMotta. But LaMotta knocked Robinson out of the ring in the eighth round. He got up at the referee’s count of nine, but LaMotta ended Robinson’s winning streak in a unanimous decision.

Robinson avenged his loss winning the third fight. He won fight four, as well. Fight five was in Chicago in 1945. The fight was sanctioned for 12 rounds, instead of ten. Robinson won yet again, but this time, in a very close split decision, the crowd booed loudly.

Robinson fought LaMotta a final time for the middleweight title, now held by LaMotta, on Valentine’s Day in 1951 in Chicago. Robinson dominated most of the fight. The champ was exhausted in the late rounds. LaMotta was pummeled in rounds 11 through 13 but was able to stay standing. The referee rushed in to end the fight after a series of more brutal, unanswered punches. Robinson regained the title. The fight was dubbed, “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” Many feel that their rivalry is second–best in boxing history, only behind the legendary Ali–Frasier fights.

Joke of the Month

The Romantic Husband

Dan and Sharee were at the mall the day before Valentine’s Day. Sharee suddenly realized that Dan was missing, so she called him on his cell phone.

Sharee asked, “Dan, where did you go?” You know we’ve got to leave soon so we can pick up the kids from practice.”

Dan paused for a second and slowly asked, “Do you remember that little mom and pops jewelry store in this mall that we stopped into about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that heart-shaped diamond necklace? And that I said I couldn’t afford it at the time, but that one day I would buy it for you?”

Tears started to roll down Sharee’s cheeks, and she got choked up.

“Of course I remember that shop,” she joyfully replied.

“Oh great, I’m in the Hooters right next to that."

Homeowners Face Cost Conundrum

Homeowners who financed during the era of low interest rates are facing an expensive dilemma, according to The Wall Street Journal. Their locked-in mortgage rates just over 3 percent made it possible to buy bigger houses but, while their mortgage rate isn't rising, other costs are. In particular, the cost of insurance and property taxes have skyrocketed in some areas, making the homes they could once afford too expensive.

According to Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), in five major metro areas, homeowners spend more than half of their monthly mortgage payments on taxes and insurance. Nationwide, for about 9 percent of homeowners, taxes and insurance add up to 50 percent of their monthly mortgage payment. In 2015, taxes and insurance made up less than 4 percent of payments.

Home insurance premiums surged in price over the last two years. In some cases, a homeowner who bought in 2015 could have paid their property taxes, home insurance and flood insurance for about $725 per month. But that cost is now closer to $2,500.

While the cost of homes currently hovers at all-time highs, rising tax and insurance costs might actually soon drive down prices, according to ICE. It might also cut into the market of consumers who want to refinance since they might not qualify for a new loan if their tax and insurance costs have risen too high.

Obesity Drugs May Offer Heart-Health Benefits

Medications like Ozempic and Wegovy may offer significant heart health benefits -- and not just through weight loss.

According to the British Heart Foundation, two studies presented at the 2024 European Congress on Obesity showed that semaglutide medications may help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious cardiac complications. The studies followed more than 17,000 overweight or obese adults who did not have diabetes but received weekly semaglutide injections.

On average, the participants saw sustained weight loss of about 10 percent after four years, regardless of their age or body size. Participants were also less likely to experience life-threatening heart events like heart attack or stroke, regardless of how much weight they lost. Even patients who did not lose any weight decreased their risk, possibly due to the drug's effects on blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation of the heart.

But most U.S. insurers have restricted coverage of these drugs to patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes, and everyone else must shoulder the steep out-of-pocket costs -- around $1,000 per month or more, according to GoodRx. But Medicare and Medicaid may begin covering anti-obesity drugs in 2025 if a new rule that would expand coverage takes effect. The rule reclassifies obesity drugs as treatment for chronic disease.
