A Word from the Publisher

Goodbye May, hello June! I’ve been in Florida most of my life and have only seen hail here a total of three times, two of which happened within the last few weeks—crazy! Summer officially begins this month, and kids will be out of school on break. I want to congratulate our son, Jake, who just graduated from Florida State University, as well as all the other recent graduates out there!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15th so be sure to plan a fun celebration to honor dear ol’ dad. Personally, I’d love to spend the day at SeaWorld in Orlando riding their incredible roller coasters, so I’ll have to see if one of my kids steps up and agrees to accompany me :) or else I will have to drag my wife kicking and screaming.

Hurricane Season also begins this month and runs through November 30th. If you haven’t already, now is the time to get your house prepared. We have lots of reputable local contractors listed in our magazine who can inspect your roof, screen enclosures, windows, doors, fences, install hurricane shutters, and make sure your trees are in good shape to weather any storms.

If you reside outside of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News is direct mailed to each month, we offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll receive our issue each month to read on your phone or computer. So many people complain about everything online these days, but I actually wanted to pass along what a wonderful experience I recently had with one of your advertisers, Tekno Appliance Service. Our washer machine stopped working, so I called and scheduled Tekno to come to my house the next morning.

The owner, Tony, was right on time, he quickly diagnosed the problem and let me know the cost (which I was thrilled at how reasonable it was.) I could not have been happier with the entire process and highly recommend this company!

After cancelling our home warranty last year with a local service company (which was nothing but headaches and an absolute waste of money), we have found so many great local contractors to use from your magazine. Please feel free to share my letter

Sincerely,

Carol Shirley, Lake Charleston Resident

Publisher’s Note: Dear Carol,

Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience, and yes, we’ll be more than happy to share your note with our readers (Tekno In-Home Appliance Service ad on pg 53.)

June 15thHonor thy Grand Poobah

In the new way of honoring those we love, we are about to see pictures of fathers popping up all over Facebook, Instagram, X, and other social media. We'll see fathers in military uniforms, snapshots of dad in a favorite moment, or maybe even the big guy on his wedding day way back when.

Sunday, June 15th is bound to be a festival of dad. It's a fine way to help honor a father and will touch the hearts of many. If you post a few favorite pics of dad, be sure to post a memory, even if it doesn't exactly match the photo. Was there a legendary moment in the family when dad did something exceptionally cool? Like maybe spotting a dirt road and taking the family car off roading. Or maybe the time that big, tough dad saw a turtle struggling to cross a busy road and instantly pulled over to stop traffic and carry it safely to the other side. Those times of fun and tenderness are what make unforgettable memories.

Maybe, if remembering your dad over his lifetime, you can recall his work. That he got up every morning, rain or shine, and brought back a paycheck to support his family. Maybe you remember how he tried to fix everything or save the day in a million little ways. Or his favorite sayings. Most dads have at least a few of them.

It would be a good day to thank him for those million things. So go ahead and do that. If he only lives in your memory now, pay him a tribute anyway.

Your Brain & Weight: What to Know

Did you know your brain helps control hunger, fullness, and weight? But carrying extra weight can hurt your body and your brain, too. Being overweight can cause your body’s immune system to go into overdrive. This can lead to inflammation, which can damage your brain. Over time, too much inflammation may affect your memory and thinking and increase the risk of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.

What is a healthy weight? Doctors use a number called Body Mass Index (BMI) to see if your weight is healthy. BMI is based on your height and weight. If your BMI is too high, you may have a higher risk of health problems. BMI ranges can differ for different people, so your doctor can help you understand what’s healthy for you.

How can extra weight affect your brain? Fat cells release chemicals that can cause inflammation. These chemicals can build up if you have too much body fat, especially around your belly. Over time, this may damage your brain cells.

You can protect your brain and body by:

• Being active (walking, building muscle, getting enough sleep).

•Eating better (more fiber, less fat, fewer calories).

•Considering weight-loss surgery or medication if needed.

Weight-loss pills aren’t a magic fix, but they can help you eat less by making you feel full faster. Want to join a weight management study? BMR in Delray Beach, is looking for overweight adults. Call 561-374-8461 to learn more.

Live Long & Prosper in Retirement

You may not have planned to retire as a single person (or maybe you did), but if you are facing retirement soon, you'll need a strategy. According to a recent study by the Nationwide Retirement Institute, 25 percent of single investors say they did not plan to be single in retirement. In fact, only 9 percent said they enjoy the independence of being single in retirement.

The same study found that a third of single investors say they experience far more hardship compared to people with partners, and the older the single investor, the more likely the hardship.

Here are a few considerations as you approach retirement:

• Be a smart spender. Cut where you can and focus on building an emergency fund.

•Retire as late as possible to maximize your Social Security earnings.

•Maximize your money. Make the maximum contribution to 401(k) or IRA accounts. Build a diversified investment portfolio.

•Plan well ahead for the lifestyle you want to have (or maintain) in retirement.

At some point, long-lived people find themselves without family and lifelong friends. If you have no name to put on the "emergency contact" line on a form, you'll know it is time to find social situations -- and consider long-term care solutions. You'll need an estate plan and someone you trust to make decisions for you should you be unable to do so yourself.

Summer Solstice

Usually when someone complains that it has been a long day, it was a day that felt long. But on June 20, it's more than a figure of speech. It really is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. It is the day of the summer solstice. In Chicago, for example, there are more than 15 hours of daylight. In Alaska, the sun drops down to the horizon for about two hours before it chases away the twilight to start the day again.

Legend says it's the day when the sun stands still. That's actually what the word solstice means. It comes from the Latin words sol meaning sun and sistere, meaning to cause to stand still. As the solstice approaches, you can see the noonday sun rise higher and higher in the sky each day. On the day of the solstice, however, it rises an imperceptible amount compared to the day before and it seems to stop.

Mystics throughout the centuries believed the solstice was a time of light and fire. Many cultures saw it as a time to reflect upon the growth of the season. It has often been seen as a time for renewal and for love. No wonder people want to get married in June.

The full moon near the solstice also has been considered special. That moon, this year on June 11, is called the Strawberry Moon or, in Europe, Honey Moon. It got its name from the fermented honey drink offered at marriage ceremonies. The summer solstice is a time to welcome summer and all that it has to offer for the entire season (and a great excuse to throw a fun party!)

New Therapies Treat TMJ Disorders

About 12 million Americans suffer from painful jaw joint and muscles called TMJ disorders. The jaw pain often interferes with sleep and makes it hard to eat or speak. The symptoms can also bring pain to the backs of the eyes, shoulders, neck and back. The culprit is the temporomandibular joint that connects the lower jaw to the bone at the side of the head and its connected muscles.

A 2024 Journal of Oral Rehabilitation study found that 60 percent of TMJ disorder patients exhibit nighttime bruxism, often linked to stress. Stress-related clenching of the jaw muscles may be the cause. Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia may also contribute, with a 2025 Arthritis & Rheumatology study noting that 20 percent of TMJ patients have an underlying autoimmune disorder.

Treatment begins with self-care. Limit jaw movement while eating, yawning and laughing and avoid chewing gum. Use heat to relax the muscles. Apply a heating pad, hot towel or water bottle for 20 minutes at a time. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling. Use over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxem.

When misaligned teeth are the problem, a dentist or orthodontist can prescribe a mouth guard. Techniques like manual therapy, ultrasound, or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can also reduce pain, with a 2025 Physical Therapy Reviews study reporting 70 percent of patients showing improvement after 6–8 weeks. And Botox injections into the jaw muscles have been shown to significantly reduce clenching and jaw pain.

Say Goodbye to Colored Dye

The magenta filling inside a Pop-Tart, the nuclear glow of a sour apple lollipop, and the powdered drink mix that turns dark purple with water. The saturated colors that you see in these, and thousands of other, commercially prepared foods usually come from artificial food dyes -but may not for much longer after the federal government announced its plan to completely remove petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the U.S. food supply.

According to NBC News, nine of the 36 FDA-approved food dyes are derived from petroleum. The other 27 approved colors are derived from vegetables and other natural sources. While researchers have not yet found a concrete relationship between food dyes and health complications, numerous studies have already linked artificial colors to heightened cancer risks and behavioral problems in kids.

The push to eliminate artificial colors from the food supply is nothing new. According to CNN, the FDA announced a ban on red dye No. 3 during the Biden administration. California enacted its own statewide prohibition in 2023. Red 3 is already banned in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and several other countries, along with a number of other artificial colors that the U.S. allows (at least for now).

Food manufacturers will certainly feel the impact of the ban if it takes effect, but consumers are unlikely to notice much of a difference. The additives don't impact taste, and natural alternatives are widely available.

Remembering Okinawa 80 Years Later

The Pacific Island of Okinawa is small, just 67 miles long and 17 miles at its widest point. But at just 350 nautical miles from the southernmost Japanese island of Kyushu, it was a critical target for Allied forces in the Pacific Theater of World War II. June 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of its capture and the conclusion of the last major battle of World War II.

The Allied powers’ strategy of amphibious invasions and island hopping had proven effective in breaking Japan’s defensive perimeter in the Pacific. After capturing Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the planned invasion of Japan, called Operation Downfall, was finally set to begin, potentially bringing the world-shattering war to an end.

Faced with almost certain defeat against the much larger Allied force, Japanese troops hunkered down among the caves and rocky ridges of Okinawa to avoid the advancing Americans and their relentless naval bombardment. Few surrendered, and both sides sustained heavy casualties in the frequent close-quarter clashes. But the grinding advance continued regardless, and the Allies reached the southern tip of the island by June 21 after horrifying 82 days.

Japan’s last defenses in the Pacific had been destroyed, but at a terrible cost -- 12,520 Americans gave their lives, and another 38,000 were wounded. Fearing that Operation Downfall would turn into “an Okinawa from one end of Japan to the other,” President Harry Truman instead ordered the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki just a few weeks later, and the Japanese surrender soon followed.

America’s Top Export is Often Stolen

Look at technology, pharmaceuticals, and software, and you see American innovation. A 2023 report by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) found that IP-intensive industries accounted for 41 percent of U.S. GDP, roughly $7.8 trillion, and supported 63 million American jobs. The U.S. leads in patent filings, with over 600,000 applications last year, and dominates global markets in IP-driven fields.

Innovative ideas are what economists call Intellectual Property, or IP, a term you frequently hear on business news channels. Currently, the people with the biggest ideas are usually in the U.S., and the people who build those ideas are in other countries, notably China. But what happens when a company in another country steals your idea?

Canadian businessman Kevin O'Leary recently gave the example of a popular, heavy-duty floor mat for trucks. The U.S. idea was manufactured in China, but as soon as sales reached 5 million units, a knock-off appeared in China, exactly the same in every detail, except at a fraction of the price. The result crushed the American owners who had the idea, invested in research and development, and got financing to produce the idea.

In the U.S., there is a price to pay in court for stealing ideas. But in other countries, businesses often lack recourse. O'Leary is strongly pro-tariffs and says that a high Chinese tariff could finally level the playing field. The U.S. Trade Representative estimates IP theft from China costs the U.S. economy $225–$600 billion annually.

Buying and selling a home is stressful. Showings. Listings. Open houses. Taxes. Closing costs. Paperwork on top of paperwork. And those are just the things you've thought of off the top of your head. While it's easy to think you can handle it all yourself, a real estate transaction is time-consuming and complicated, and if not handled properly, it could cost you money. Just as you wouldn't represent yourself in a court of law, it's simply not in your best interest to represent yourself when buying or selling a home.

REALTORS belong to the National Association of Realtors and have agreed to conduct themselves according to the REALTOR Code of Ethics, which contains 17 rules that ensure standards of practice to promote honesty and fairness.

REALTORS have insider information, network with other real estate pros, and have exclusive access to market data. They know CMAs, FSBOs, appraisals, and assessments. In addition to marketing behind the scenes with colleagues, REALTORS know how to make your house shine, from planning the perfect open house to staging your home for showings.

And REALTORS are tough negotiators. It's all about the final price. REALTORS aren't emotionally invested in your property. And that's a good thing, because more than likely, you are. Your home holds many memories and letting go can be heart-wrenching. Humans simply don't make the best decisions when they're emotional. A REALTOR can be a common-sense constant who negotiates with their head instead of their heart.

Remembering Anne Frank

The story of Anne Marie Frank is among the most well–known accounts of the Holocaust. Her diary is the first encounter many people have with the history of Hitler’s attempt to murder the Jews of Europe during World War II.

Born June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne and her family fled to Amsterdam after the Nazis came to power in 1933. While hiding in a secret apartment with her family and four other Jews, Anne kept a diary detailing her fears, hopes, and experiences. She began her diary on her 13th birthday in 1942.

In August 1944, Nazi police discovered the hideout, and the group of eight were sent to concentration camps. Sadly, Anne and her sister both caught typhus and died within days of each other at the camp in February 1945. The camp would be liberated two months later.

After the war, Anne’s father, Otto, returned to Amsterdam and was reunited with a former employee who had helped shelter them. The woman gave him Anne’s diary, which she had found undisturbed after the Nazi raid. Anne’s diary was published in 1947 and became a bestseller. The Diary of Anne Frank has served as a literary testament to the nearly six million Jews who were silenced in the Holocaust. Her diary was later adapted for Broadway and film, and the Frank family’s hideaway in Amsterdam opened as a museum in 1960.

The Top Health Problem Facing Men

Men's Health Week is June 9-15th, so there’s no better time than to highlight the chronic health problem among American men: They are more much more likely to avoid going to the doctor than women. According to UAB Medicine, only about 60 percent of American men between the ages of 22 and 65 receive an annual physical, and many men will only seek care if they suspect a serious medical problem.

Dr. Patrick Selph, a urologist with UAB Medicine, notes that avoiding routine medical care means that medical conditions may go undetected for years. In his own clinic, Selph routinely diagnoses patients with diabetes or high blood pressure after they seek care for unrelated complaints like urinary tract infections. Many of these issues could have been prevented entirely with more routine medical care and annual physicals.

Why do people avoid care? Cost, inadequate insurance coverage, and lack of time are some of the most common obstacles, according to Nashville Medical News. According to Texas Health, around one-quarter of men have felt judged by healthcare providers, and nearly half fear uncomfortable discussions about their sexual health. Other anxietyprovoking topics include their workout frequency, alcohol and tobacco use, and adherence to prescribed medications and treatment plans.

Selph urges men to remember that their health isn't just about them -- major health issues can also create difficult and painful circumstances for family and loved ones.

SunglassesJust Wear Them!

Wearing sunglasses is a simple and effective way to protect your eyes and preserve your vision. Why? Because, although the sun is a whopping 93 million miles away, ultraviolet (UV) radiation contributes to forming cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye complications. UV radiation exposure is also the number one reason people get skin cancer. Too much sun exposure ages the eyes and damages the DNA within the eyes. Sunlight also causes squinting, which can cause eye strain and headaches.

But sunglasses can prevent sun damage to eyes, as well as prevent debris like dust and pollen from getting into the eyes. They also help with wrinkles around the eyes. Sunglasses can help prevent glare and too much sunlight from blinding drivers while driving during daytime.

There’s generally two types of sun lenses and two colors. Basic dark lenses are fine but will not protect you from blinding glare. Only polarized lenses can do that. Gray or brown tints are the two main color choices. Gray is usually darker, but brown is an all-weather lens. Both are good choices. Choosing a lens color is a personal preference but just make sure the lenses are UV blocking.

There are many other great reasons to wear sunglasses, and regardless of whether they are cheap or expensive, just wear them!

My UCF Journey Begins…

Incoming Freshman at University of Central Florida

As my new chapter at the University of Central Florida begins, I look back at how busy I’ve been planning my dorm and preparing for the big move out. I never imagined that planning my dorm room would be so stressful!

I’ve decided that my dorm is going to be gold and blue themed and have started purchasing decorations from Amazon, Target and HomeGoods. I think the hardest part, however, is not the decorating part but finding roommates.

At UCF, most of the dorms are 4/2, meaning each girl gets their own single room and two girls share one of the bathrooms. And then all four girls share the kitchen and living room. The dorms are much more apartment like than most college dorms.

Additionally, UCF has double rooms, so two girls sleep in the same room together. But I’m hoping to stay in a single, as I like my privacy. I can’t wait to meet my new roommates. I realize all of the moving and packing has been a bit stressful for my parents, as I’m their only child, and I know going away will be hard for me as well. Aside from anticipating that I’m probably going to be a little homesick in the beginning, I’m beyond grateful and excited for the new experiences ahead of me!

Love Is Blind, Sometimes PICTURE PERFECT ROOFING

On their fourth date, a tech entrepreneur asked his date, a marketing executive, if she’d consider a prenuptial agreement. Her response, “I will if you will,” sparked an honest conversation about their finances, goals, and assets. Both in their 40s with careers, investments, and children from prior relationships, they saw a prenup as a practical step to safeguard their futures.

Financial expert Rachel Cruze emphasizes that love can cloud practical thinking, but marriage is as much an economic partnership as a romantic one. In 2025, the U.S. divorce rate hovers around 40–45 percent for first marriages, with second and third marriages failing at rates of 60 percent and 73 percent, respectively, according to the CDC’s National Marriage and Divorce Rate Trends.

Not every couple needs a prenup, but financial planners strongly recommend them for those entering marriage with significant assets, debts, or complex family dynamics. Midlife couples, typically in their 40s and 50s, often have wealth disparities. One partner may have a business, real estate, or retirement savings, while the other has less. And blended families may require inheritance clarification and protection.

A 2024 Harris Poll found that 42 percent of U.S. adults view prenups as a smart financial tool, up from just 36 percent a decade ago, with acceptance growing among younger generations (52 percent of Millennials and Gen Z). It may not be romantic, but prenups can clarify anything from what happens in the event of infidelity to who gets the dog.

Knee Pain No Longer Cause for Dread

For someone who has continuous pain and stiffness that limits daily activities and interferes with sleep, knee replacement can be a good solution. Today’s knee replacement can relieve your pain and restore function, especially if rehabilitation has failed. Those who once could not use stairs, walk, or even get out of bed without pain should find relief with this surgical procedure.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), approximately 850,000 total knee replacements (TKR) are performed annually in the U.S., a number that has risen due to an aging population and improved surgical techniques. The procedure is most common among adults aged 50–80, but younger patients with severe joint damage are increasingly considered, thanks to longer-lasting implants.

In 2025, robots are getting involved in TKR. Roboticassisted TKR, used in 20 percent of procedures in 2024, enhances precision in implant placement, reducing recovery time and complications. Custom implants, designed using Artificial Intelligence and 3D imaging, are also gaining traction for better fit and function.

Enhanced recovery protocols, including same-day discharge for some patients, have shortened recovery times. Most patients walk with assistance within 1–2 days and resume normal activities within 6–12 weeks, per Mayo Clinic 2025 guidelines. New protocols, such as pre-surgical health optimization (managing diabetes, quitting smoking), and antibiotic coatings on implants have lowered complication rates for infections and blood clots.

Researchers have discovered that the supervolcano inside Yellowstone has a helpful cap that holds in heat and pressure but also vents just enough so that the whole system doesn't flip its lid.

The cap is located nearly 3 miles under the surface, according to findings published in the recent April 2025 journal Nature.

According to Live Science, Yellowstone hasn't had a major eruption for more than 600,000 years. That's a good thing because the Yellowstone caldera measures about 30 by 45 miles, covering more than 1,300 square miles. There is so much magma that it could fill the Grand Canyon 11 times, according to the journal Nature. But, the good news is that only about 15 percent is molten.

Yellowstone has had three supereruptions over the past 2.1 million years and is one of the best-monitored volcanoes in the world. A supereruption would cover at least two adjoining states in three feet of ash, create a volcanic winter, destroy crops, and deplete the entire ozone layer.

Fortunately, scientists think that this is unlikely to occur anytime soon and, if the volcano became dangerous, they would know several years ahead of an eruption.

If you've purchased Gulf shrimp lately, there's a real chance that you aren't really getting it. Instead, your shrimp might have been raised on overseas farms, imported to the U.S., and mislabeled as Gulf shrimp—a practice that violates consumer protection laws.

According to a Washington Times report, the food safety company SeaD Consulting tested shrimp from restaurants across Gulf Coast states, including St. Petersburg, Baton Rouge, Biloxi, Galveston, and the Tampa metro area, finding that 43 to 96 percent were committing ‘shrimp fraud.’

A significant amount of the imported shrimp comes from India, where shrimp industry processing plants fall short of U.S. food safety standards. According to the Associated Press, shrimp peelers in India often work in unsanitary conditions and lack essential protective gear, increasing the risk of contamination.

The U.S. tariff policy, implemented in April 2025, aims to protect the Gulf shrimp industry, a move strongly supported by the industry. Initially, shrimp imports faced a 10 percent tariff, with additional duties of 10–46 percent on countries like India (26 percent) and Vietnam (46), though these were paused on April 11, 2025, and reduced to 10 percent for 90 days (excluding China). Countries like India, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Vietnam benefit from lower production costs and lax regulations, often using banned antibiotics and forced labor. These countries impose high tariffs (13–45 percent) on U.S. shrimp exports, while the U.S. previously had minimal tariffs on shrimp imports.

AQUARIUS: 1/20 - 2/18): You will be disappointed by a close friend this month. No good comes from taking it personally, take the high road with a lesson learned. Lucky Day: June 27.

PISCES: 2/19 - 3/20: You are tempted to go with the flow and steer clear of making waves during a tense situation at month’s end. Stick to your guns and go with your gut or you’ll regret not speaking up. Lucky Day: June 29.

Bert feared his wife Peg wasn't hearing as well as she used to and thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem.

“Here 's what you do,” said the Doctor, “stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.”

That evening, his wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He thinks to himself that he is about 40 feet away and in a normal tone asks, “Honey, what's for dinner?”

No response.

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, “Peg, what's for dinner?”'

Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, “Honey, what's for dinner?”

Again, no response.

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away…“Honey, what's for dinner?”

Nothing but silence.

He finally walks right up behind her… “Peg, what's for dinner?”

“For God's sake, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN! !”
