July 29th sees the Aragon Day Tudor Fair which is to be held at The Old Sun in Dunstable Street Ampthill.

The event begins with a procession starting from St Andrew’s Church which will proceed along Church Street, through the car park, crossing on the zebra crossing and is due to arrive at The Old Sun at about 11.25am. The procession is to be headed up by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire preceded by his sword bearer. The Tudor Fair includes many enactors of the period including birds of prey , Tudor dancers, storytelling for the children, a bowman, dissident priest and many more.

The delightful Millbrook Church Fete is to be held on Sunday 11th June this year, at Millbrook Village Hall and Playing Field. The event is from 12.30pm to 4.00pm and will feature a BBQ, delicious cream teas, real ales and Pimms will also be served.

In addition there are to be owls and other critters, Millbrook Proving Ground tours, a display of vintage motorbikes and tractors, the ever popular Quintessential brass band, traditional games, side stalls and face painting. Entry to the event is free and there is also free car parking.

All profits from the day go to St Michael and All Angels Church, Millbrook.

We are very sorry to have to tell you that David West passed away on the 25th May 2017. Affectionately known by all as Westy, David could often be found sharing his particularly mischievous sense of humour in the various hostelries in town whilst enjoying a pint or two.

Always entertaining, David will be missed by many.

Little Brickhill Open Gardens event will be on the weekend of the 8th and 9th July from 2.00pm until 6.00pm.

There will at least 8 gardens open with delicious cream teas and homemade cakes available in the village hall as well as plants and handicrafts for sale. The beautiful Norman church will be open and all proceeds will go for the upkeep of this building. The miniature railway will also be all steamed up and ready for rides for children and adults and also a quiz for the children. Maps available in the village hall and cost is £5.00. 'The Old House'

If you were beginning to think that Sundays were dull or uninteresting, in The Old House, or even just routine, run of the mill, the opposite was true.

The old wireless would be playing in the background as The Mrs Sam's mother prepared the Sunday Lunch, with Great Aunt Lizzie, as she readied the fresh vegetables, joined in the hymns, from the Sunday services or later on sing to Forces Favourites coming from faraway lands, with whoever was in trying to outdo each other!

The backdoor left open, for whoever tapped on the door to walk straight in, the only time that door was shut, would be in the winter. Tap the door they did! The Mrs Sam's face lit up as she reflected, pausing to tell The Five Friends how the garden would be filled with motorbikes, or pushbikes, various types and sizes.

Summer time was bike time. (Family members would only pay road tax in the better weather) Can you still do that, ? queried The Mrs Sam. (a non motorist) Great Aunt Lizzie's sister Cis and Uncle Albert drove over on their motorbike and sidecar, this no longer needed as both their son's Des and Gorden had long since graduated from cycles to motorbikes. But the sidecar held a treasure chest of goodies. Great Uncle Albert always grew ridge cucumbers and the sweetest tomatoes. The smell of the fruit just below the leaf stalk, doesn't seem to be the same with shop brought tomatoes, does it? Great Aunt Cis always seemed to have made some item or other for one of us, whether it be a wonderful sponge cake, having been fortunate to have been a cook in a large town house, before her marriage, she was the best of cooks, or she had knitted us gloves for the coming winter. Never forgetting her younger sister, a bunch of freshly cut flowers from her cottage garden. The best of flower growers too. On the way home the

The Mrs Sam talked of embroidered cushions that as a young child she had made for her beloved Great Aunt Cis, taken home to Marston in the sidecar were still being used thirty years later. Mind you laughed the Old Boys, you had a front room that was only used at Christmas or on rare occasions, so they didn't get much wear, just to look pretty on the sofa! How could The Mrs Sam disagree!

How The Mrs Sam's mother managed to keep an eye on the lunch, while making pots of tea and handing out fruitcake or jam tarts straight from the old black lead range.

Sometimes a postcard popped through the letterbox to say to expect a visit at such and such a time, however the young family members would shoot off for a spin and just turn up. So planning visitors, who would come, you might as well toss a coin. No one minded, everyone welcome.

Dapper Charlie remarked we have more cars than ever, that are faster, but still we haven't got time to go visiting. The Five Old Boys contemplating how there is ever enough time, sat enjoying the comfort of the WashHouse Shed, wondering where the time goes. (Shall have to put a clock on the wall thought Sam) The noise of roaring motorbikes, interrupted the church bells, as folk came from the service, parking along side their parents motorbike, Des and Gorden had arrived! Have some pictures in the biscuit tin will find them later, promised The Mrs Sam, that is of the bikes and the two boys.

They were about the same age as The Mrs Sam's mother, and soon girlfriend's would ride pillion to visit The Old House, then later as wives, to show off the latest motorcar, motorbikes long gone. As they roared out of the garden the sound ceased as they stopped to get petrol from Great Aunt Annie's one pump filling station .

Babs needed some extra cash, so she begged her friend at the highway department for a job any job at all.

There is to be a Country Show and Rally on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July at Old Farm, Clophill Road, Maulden, Beds MK45 2AA. The show is open from 9am each day (open to exhibitors from Friday 14th) and features a host of attractions which include Steam Engines, Classic Cars and Commercials, & Vintage Tractors and equipment.

There are also to be Working Displays, a fun fair, Trade stands and ring events including a dog show on the Sunday.

In addition to the food outlets on hand there is also to be a licensed bar and live music from 9.00pm on Friday with Pauline Moss and Saturday the Wilsons Show. Proceeds from the event will go to Air Ambulance and Sue Ryder.

It was decided this year to hold the final tea of the Hambledon Club cricket season at The Bat and Ball pub; thus reviving a tradition from the 18th century when the pub was the pavilion and club house for the club.

The vicar’s wife Mrs Henderson and the landlady of the Bat and Ball Mrs Derry, would be responsible for the preparations. They decided to engage the help of catering students at the local college. The delicate sandwiches and delicious cakes made by the students had been delivered early that morning. The students were due to arrive in the college mini bus in time to set up and serve tea ........ but...... with just an hour to go before tea and not a sign of the students.

In her usual calm and organized way Mrs Henderson decided that the best thing would be for herself and Mrs Derry to start setting up for the tea, lay out the food and prepare to serve if necessary. No time to waste. Fingers crossed that the students would soon arrive.

It was then that a lady dressed beautifully in a long white lace dress – a little OTT in Mrs Derry’s mind, asked if there was anything she could do to help.

“How kind” said Mrs Henderson.

“Who is that?” whispered Mrs Derry to Mrs Henderson when out of ear shot of the lady.

“Haven’t a clue my dear” replied Mrs Henderson, “but not to worry, we need all the help we can get .... we should be grateful”. The ladies worked on and then with just five minutes to go the mini bus turned up with the students.

The driver was so apologetic explaining the reason for the lateness.

“Never mind” said Mrs Henderson, “We are just so glad to see you here ...... I must go and find the kind lady who stepped in to help us and thank her”... but the lady in question was nowhere to be seen. “Have you seen the lady who was helping us?” she asked Mrs Derry. “No sorry I have not, I assumed she was still in the kitchens plating up”......”No she is not ..... How odd ...... fancy disappearing like that without saying goodbye” The afternoon passed without further problems and the tea was a huge success. “A perfect way to end the season” said The President of the Club.

That evening as Mrs Derry was closing up the pub she passed the painting on the wall in the snug bar, something she had done often but this time she did a double take. “Oh my,” she gasped as she stood looking at the painting of when the team of the time had, ‘defeated an all England X1 by an

innings and sixty-eight runs’

A cup was being presented to the Captain by an elegant lady in a long white lace dress, the wife of the then President of the Club, and the year was 1777....... the very same lady who had come to their aid that very afternoon.

Mrs Derry shivered, turned off the light, shut the door and decided to speak with Mrs Henderson first thing in the morning ....... she might even feel the need to speak with the vicar himself! ©

ROSIE CHICKEN To serve 4 you will need: 4 boneless breasts of chicken (from the butcher, of course!)

75 gm butter 100 gm mushrooms Salt & pepper 1/4 pint cream And the best bit - 1/2 litre (or more) of cider!

Firstly pop the oven on to about 230 deg C to heat.

Whilst this is happening take a crafty slurp of the cider.

Chop up the mushrooms

and fry in butter, then remove from pan. Brown chicken in the butter.

Throw the chicken and mushrooms in an oven proof dish.

Pour the cider into the pan and stir with wooden spoon.

Add the cream, salt & pepper and gently simmer.

Pour the cider sauce over the chicken, cover and place in the oven for 30 or so minutes.

Whilst cooking this gives you a chance for another slurp of cider!

Brilliant served with mash and sweet corn.

So it was that I found myself spending a few treasured hours in Woburn at the end of April.

It was all very enjoyable but the highlight of the trip came completely out of the blue. I decided to interrupt shopping by stopping off for a coffee in the ‘Caprioli’ Tea Room Cafe’ situated on the cobbled centre of the village square.

Throwing caution to the wind I ordered a scone with my pot of tea. The scone was delicious, melted in the mouth and quite the best I have ever tasted. With the pot of tea came a tea strainer – something you don’t see so often today - It meant I could enjoy a cup or two of traditional tea made from tea leaves with not a tea bag in sight. How refreshing.

May I suggest that if you get the chance, do pay a visit to ‘Caprioli’s’.

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

At a place in Scotland once I pulled in for petrol at a large old boarded up Church. The petrol kiosk was in the entrance porch and petrol pump just left of the door. I was told that petrol had been sold from a few feet away since 1938 and that behind the brick door built up is an old petrol pump which you had to wind up petrol into a glass tank at the top. When it was full you allowed the petrol to flow by gravity into the vehicle.

The saying is: The oak before the ash we’ll only have a splash. So summer should be good.

Having a chat with my brother I found out that he’s been a member of the A.A. Motoring Organisation for 57 years and has a gold membership card.

I read a book earlier this year entitled ‘The Island on The Edge’ by Anne Cholawn. She used to live here in Fuddlerlnad just 1/2 mile from me although I don’t think we ever met. She now lives on the Isle of Soay which I’d never heard of; it’s just off Skye near the Cullins. There’s only a handful of people living on the island. I go up there on holiday soon so I’ve arranged to call and see her and her new husband. More news later.

Driving through Cumbria I stopped to ask someone in a garden where a certain house would be. It happened to be someone I knew who lived in Fuddlerland and I hadn’t seen for 36 years. He recognised me immediately.

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 3) Southern Chilli Georgia Style - Columbia, South Carolina mammothman01@gmail.com

In 2005 I was attending a conference in Columbia, South Carolina. One evening a few colleagues and myself visited a local restaurant for dinner, and on the menu I saw the Southern Chilli Georgia Style dish, this really took my fancy, and it was my first taste of Chilli in North America. The range of dishes in this part of the US was amazing. I'd already sampled gumbo, which basically is a soupy type of stew, consisting of whatever was caught in the local waterways the previous day.

Catfish, alligator, snake, anything...but it was tasty.

I'd also tried Carolina shrimp and grits. Grits is a kind of oatmeal gravy, which is very popular in the southern states, it is also an acquired taste. Anyway, back to the chilli. This dish was great, and a real surprise for me, as up until then I had only been used to the normal kind of chilli con carne we do over here in the UK; mince, kidney beans, tomato, chilli pepper, and onion. This dish was made from chuck steak, trimmed and cubed, the stock was a tin of beef broth, another tin of chicken broth, a tin of chopped tomatoes, a chopped green bell pepper, some Carolina Cayenne pepper and a small Charleston Hot chilli pepper.

The Carolina Cayenne chilli pepper is 100,000 - 125,000 Scoville Heat Units on the chilli index. The Heat Units index is set by the Chilli Pepper Institute, in New Mexico (yes there really is one), and is a register that measures the hotness of

chillies. For the record, a green bell pepper registers 0 Scovilles; Jalapeño chillies register 2500 - 8000 Scovilles; Cayenne pepper registers 30,000 - 50,000 Scovilles; The Charleston Hot chillies register 70,000 100,000 Scovilles; Scotch Bonnet and Habanero chillies both register 100,000 - 350,000 Scovilles; the Bhut Jolokia chilli or Naga or Ghost chilli registers 1,300,000 Scovilles and the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chilli registers an almighty 2,000,000 Scovilles.

However, when I was enquiring about the recipe and where I could get some of the Charleston Hot pepper sauce, the chef told me that a local farmer had just started making a stronger chilli than the Scorpion varieties.

Known locally as 'Smokin Ed Currie', his Carolina Reaper chilli registered 2,200,000 Scovilles, and was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the hottest chilli commercially available, marketed as Smokin Ed's Carolina Reaper chilli. Unfortunately Ed had not managed to market his new chilli whilst I was in South Carolina, but the Charleston Hot and Carolina Cayenne were both quite hot enough thank you.

Also I had not started my 'chilli journal' at that point, otherwise I would have to have given the Southern Chilli Georgia Style a mark of (5 red chillies).
