‘The No 200 Bus’ The Five Old Boys and the Mrs Sam had gone their separate ways, so as to make the most of the day, each had different shopping needs, and certainly in this compact town centre you can find a shop to meet your requirements. The only thing that was missed was the Saturday market, a lively friendly group of traders, even real fresh fish, as they had decided to come on a week day. The idea being to meet up at the Crown for lunch, since they would all be hungry after their early breakfast. All could potter about the town at will . And so they did. The Crown, like all the others in the pub chain, tell the story of the town and any famous past residents in extensive wall displays and so unique in the carpet design commemorate a local feature. The cog is featured in the carpet design, at first this seems just a pattern, then the cogs in all sizes shape up. When you sit down, start to read the display of local history and people, the carpet too tells a story. One famous son of Biggleswade, his achievements on display, over a hundred years ago, Dan Albone was a man that could think about and then find an answer to a problem. At the young age of eighteen he opened The Ivel Works in Shortmead Street. In his lifetime he became an international champion cyclist, not only that invented improved cycles, even a ladies bicycle, and much to Sam's pleasure a tandem. (As you will remember Sam has a thing about tandems). His inventions including the first really practical farm tractor, which are still to be found around the world. He manufactured his own motors and motorcycles. These sort of men had been the backbone of the Victorian Era, the thinkers as well as well as practical. A problem solver. Daresay today he would have sorted out the internal combustion engine to be more energy efficient. The Five Old Friends after the great pub meal stood looking at the displays and the achievements of such a inventive man. Now wondering about the achievement of the carpet designer too, in summing up a man's lifetime work, in such a one-off way. The Five Old Friends and the Mrs Sam were nattering amongst themselves as they waited for the bus home. This, so different bus trip, is like being away somewhere on holiday as you travel along the country lanes, seeing for miles from the Gravenhurst hills, the wildlife, the red kites, the buzzards, the mixture of houses, some dating back centuries, as with the thatched cottages to modern day architecture, from farm cottages to grand houses, the fields with the many varieties of crops, the tiny villages, watching the renovation of houses, seeing the finished product, then the experience of the return trip going home. It always looks different on the way home. The Five Friends Rabbit Bob, Dapper Charlie, Charlie, Ten Acre, and Sam Ilex and The Mrs Sam had experiences of such a happy journey, super day out, as always the research into the places they saw especially Chicksands Priory and Cainhoe Castle, each would find the winter months shorter, fill many hours and comparing notes would make further meet ups interesting in the Wash House Shed. Years ago on the Home Service Radio one programme had the by line "the answer lies in the soil", how true this is, as regards this secret part of Bedfordshire as this gave prosperity and work for hundreds of people over the centuries. I suppose I should have listened when I pulled a face and they told me what would happen if the wind changed A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good. I wanted to go out walking except I felt a little self conscious walking alone in the park. So I went out carrying a dog’s lead over my arm and shouted randomly. Of course I believe in time travel - only 24 hours ago I was in yesterday. My friend’s husband is so silly he bought their friends a radiator as a housewarming gift. I always take life with a pinch of salt, and a slice of lemon, and a shot of tequila. It’s practically impossible to look at a penguin and feel angry. If you didn’t know there was a trampoline in the room why would you dust the ceiling for fingerprints? Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. The voices in my head may not be real but they have some really good ideas. Does running late count as a form of exercise?

HUMAN GIVENS THERAPIST MHGI. HG Dip. (Dist) PSA. Public Standards Authority Accredited Register

The world of counselling/psychotherapy is a very different place to what it was even ten years ago! Neurological science has provided insights that when combined with the best of other approaches provides a fast and effective solution focused therapy (SFBT) that is embodied in Human Givens. Treatment does not just mean sitting and endlessly talking, it is also about effectively understanding the issues and providing lasting realistic change. Therapy thoughts When it comes to difficulties with our mental health it should be remembered that we are wired towards getting our innate needs met. When our innate needs are met in balance there is no room for poor emotional or mental health. When our innate needs are not being met or being impinged on they can act as a powerful lens on our emotional health. We often say "I am suffering from *******" or, "I have clinical ******", or "its complex ********". The truth is that all too often these conditions arise not because of genetic or biological reasons but because of the powerful trance effect of failing to get our innate needs met. This is what HG therapy is about. Until our needs are met in balance how can any of us really see what is going on?

THE ART OF INDUSTRY Art has come a long way from portraying gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, and a seemingly endless number of religious subjects. It has moved to showing scenes of domesticity, scenes of military valour – and, since the Industrial Revolution - the impact of industry on our landscapes and on our lives; particularly in the lives of those whose labour is needed for the products that we use and buy. Is labour diametrically opposed to art? Are our landscapes ruined by those ‘dark satanic mills’? Can we find beauty in industry? Artists such as Turner began by finding romance in what seemed to him the sublime drama of the Industrial Revolution; later the Arts and Crafts movement was a deliberate aesthetic reaction to the then burgeoning industrialisation and globalisation of Britain. More recently artists such as Lowry showed the dehumanising effect of endless, faceless toil on both people and our industrialised landscapes. Our prospective lecturer in June, historian Dr Anthony Buxton, lectures on the history of art, architecture, design and materials, and domestic culture. He was previously a furniture maker, which led him to a special interest in the intersection between social values and cultural values. ‘The Art of Industry’, this illustrated talk by Dr Buxton, will be held on Thursday 27 June at Aspley Guise Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The Art Society Woburn Area invites all who may be interested in this compelling topic to come to see, listen and enjoy at the price for non-members of £7.50.

All seemed well with the world. Gladys was pottering about in the garden, the cat was snoozing under the garden bench, a piece of music by Mozart was playing on the wireless and I was off to the library to see what I could find. Upon scouring the shelves I came across a tome entitled ‘The Ultimatum’ by Karen Robards. I had not read any of this writer’s work but after scanning the first page thought it was well worth a go. We are just Humans what do we Know? Introductions of new animals into a family can be unpredictable, will it be okay or be a disaster. The family Jack Russell had passed away, it had been stressful, tearful so. Unusually a new dog had not appeared for other family members well being i.e. the two cats Spice and Ginger. It became something that wasn't talked about, the two cats had been so fond of the old dog, often found in the dog basket with the dog, all snuggled up together. The Jack Russell showed

unusual behaviour in that she allowed the two cats to suckle her. Had heard of this, but she hadn't had pups. So the cats missed their Mother dog. They often all walked down the garden together, one or other of them curling its tail over the dog's back. Never a camera handy when you want one! The local vet, a neighbour, on talking to Sam Ilex mentioned a dog had been abandoned in a park, tied round a tree. Much discussion indoors. On finding after much research we found where it had been taken to. So up the A1 to a rescue centre. Many dogs.

Can only have one. A Brown and white Jack Russell, aged 18mounths?? Who they kidding. At last home. Wipe the thousands of dog hairs from clothes, (renew face makeup from thousands of kisses). Open door in she runs, at home already. Then we thought what about the cats? They sprang to live, overpowering the dog with licking, rubbing their bodies along the dog. She didn't stand a chance. Love at first sight. This meeting sure wasn't textbook, but we are just humans, what do we know. D.O.T.

‘TEARDROPS IN OYSTERS’ - with Henrietta Wainsworth. It seem fair to say that whenever WW1 is mentioned the first thoughts that come to mind is the gruesome environment of the trenches together with the devastating loss of young life. However, Henrietta has found a pure gem – please excuse the pun – a little part of history lost in time. A warm and comforting chapter showing the very best of humanity born out of a period in history which is so often, and rightly, depicted as so very black, bleak and meaningless. The Red Cross Pearl appeal was launched in 1918, (three years before the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal) to raise funds for the wounded as well as acknowledging the brave men who had sacrificed all for King and Country. At the outbreak of war the British Red Cross had joined forces with The Order of St John of Jerusalem and for the duration of the war they pooled their fund raising activities. By 1918 they needed £3 million a year to provide care for the wounded when onto the stage walked Mary (known as Molly) Northcliffe, wife of the press baron Alfred Harmsworth, Lord Northcliffe. She came up with the idea of asking women to donate a single pearl from their precious necklaces which would represent a life that had been changed forever because of the war. This new string of pearls would then be sold in aid of the British Red Cross. So great was the response that not only the single necklace that Lady Northcliffe envisaged but in total, forty one necklaces could be made all of which were auctioned by Christie’s in London on 19th December 1918, raising a great deal of money. Pearls came in from all over the world; some famous like the pearl given by the Countess of St Germans that had once belonged to the Empress Josephine and a pearl from the necklace of the Countess of Rothes which she had worn on the night she had rowed a boat to safety following the sinking of the Titanic through to pearls from ordinary people who had collectively sent a pearl such as ‘from a few ladies in County Galway’ The choosing of The Pearl was the perfect gem for the project. For thousands of years pearls have been linked to mourning and in Greek and Roman mythology pearls were thought to be from teardrops of the gods falling into oysters. Yet, on the other hand, in the Bible the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem described in the book of Revelation were made from pearls; a promise of hope and resurrection. This account has barely scratched the surface of a piece of hidden history therefore the book PEARLS before POPPIES by Rachel Trethewey is highly recommended. It not only describes in compelling detail the complete story behind the Pearl Appeal and the magnificent pearls graciously given but it also gives an insight into the lives of those involved in the project from many differing angles, who themselves, have interesting and relevant stories to tell. Perhaps the words written in The Times on 2nd December 1918 make a meaningful conclusion to this account .....”The guns are silent, the trenches are empty, but the victims of the guns and the trenches are still with us in their thousands, still needing care and sympathy........” The money raised from the Pearl Appeal helped the British Red Cross continue that care. © Henrietta Wainsworth

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

Did you know that under the pitch of the old Wembley Stadium there is buried a full size railway steam engine? How and why I don’t know. But I bet it’s rusty. My last address was Flat 1; I once got a letter addressed to Fat 1. My brother has a radio controlled clock, each year in the Spring it puts the time forward one hour and each Autumn it puts itself back one hour and it’s never one second out. I think I may get one. As a child I always thought that King Charles I has hid in a Noak tree. On Easter Sunday I was looking out of the window across a floodlit lawn at 2.30am and saw a hedgehog. My partner came to have a look. We watched it for quite a while, neither of us had seen one for about fifteen years. I only like getting mail if there are postage stamps on the envelopes. Sign at the end of the village; Thank you for driving carefully’. It still reads the same if someone had driven through like an idiot. A bit odd. The most amazing thing I have done was loop the loop in an open cockpit plane. Jigsaws: why is it that it’s always the last piece that’s missing? Road sign in Scotland: ‘Village shop first right - open 8 days a week’. I am writing this slowly in case you are not a fast reader.

Episode 71 ........ Trains, Planes & Automobiles (and boats) Pt. 4 Pembrokeshire When we found out where we were going on the 4th leg of our monthly calendar adventures, my lady friend informed me that both April & May's locations were in Pembrokeshire, south Wales, not only that, but just about 30 miles apart. Therefore, we decided that we should combine the trip into one. The first location was the lighthouse at Strumble Head. It is a rocky headland in the community of Pencaer, and marks the southern limit of Cardigan Bay. It is on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path which would also play a part in us reaching our second location, but more of that later. It was a secluded beach known as Traeth Ilfyn. Our base for the trip was going to be Goodwick, near Fishguard, which was very convenient for our train journey, as well as accessing our two locations. Our adventure started around lunchtime on a Wednesday with a train journey from Paddington station to Swansea. We were to change there for a small two carriage cross-country train to Fishguard and Goodwick, we were booked into a lovely little hotel in Goodwick. Fishguard was a ferry terminal port that comprised Fishguard itself and Fishguard Lower Town, which we were to explore the following day. On the train journey we met an Indian gentlemen called Deepak, or 'Deeps' as he was fondly known. He asked us what brings us to Goodwick, and we explained our i n t en t io n o f v i s i t in g Strumble Head and Traeth Ilfyn beach. He was fascinated by our calendar location adventures, and thought it was lovely idea. On hearing that we did not drive, he explained it would

be too far to do the whole round trip on foot and should use a local taxi company. He put us in touch with 'Tony's Taxis' which was run by two brothers, Tony and Colin. The hotel promised 'sea views', which there was, albeit you needed to stretch your neck 45 degrees out the window whilst using a strong pair of binoculars. But the room was good, and the hotel and staff were very nice. We had a walk down to the seafront before having some beverages and a nice supper. I spent a while after supper planning the next day's itinerary around Tony, who I had called earlier and explained our intention. It was my lady friend's birthday the next day too, so I wanted to keep the plan as secretive as possible. We retired early as the next day was going to be 'pretty fullon'. After a good breakfast, I popped along to the local post office and bought some bottles of water and then we both waited for Tony to pick us up about mid-day to take us the 4.5 miles by car to Strumble Head. It would not have been a nice walk, as it was down some windy country lanes and up quite a few hills. There was a car park at the headland and Tony was to wait whilst we walked the short route to the lighthouse. However, there was a gentlemen there who wanted a taxi to go somewhere about 6 miles away, and we arranged with Tony that he'd come back and pick us up to take us to the second location. We had a good hour to have a nice walk and when we got to the edge of the cliffs, another couple told us there was a small colony of seals down on the beach.
