Ampthill will be buzzing on Sunday November 18th with many attractions on the Market Square and in the town centre car park. From early afternoon everyone can enjoy the fun fair, music, refreshments, stalls, and visits to see Father Christmas before the grand switch-on at 5.00 pm.

Who will press the plunger to light up the town? The Friends of Ampthill Christmas Lights will again be choosing the young person to Switch on Ampthill’s Christmas Lights from entrants who attend one of the town’s schools or pre – schools. Entry forms will be available at the entrant’s school from Monday November 5th and must be returned completed to the entrant’s school together with a £1 coin taped to the form, by Friday November 9th. Multiple entries are allowed but each one will cost £1. The draw will take place on Monday November 12th in good time for the switch-on on Sunday November 18th.

The town’s traders are fully supporting the continuing purchase of the stunning icicle lights which proved so popular last year. We all say a very big ‘THANK YOU’ for your generosity.

This year the Ampthill Christmas Tree Festival is being held at St Andrew’s Parish Church in Ampthill on Saturday 1st December from 10.00am - 4.30pm and Sunday 2nd December from 11.00am - 5.00pm.

Entry is £2.50 if you are 14 years of age. If you are under 14 you can come in free! There is no charge for entry during services.

Everything is looking marvellous in the grounds and things, but I am a little concerned about the heron that has appeared and seems to be looking at the fish ponds. Perhaps when I have found the Christmas lights, turned the ovine creatures into reindeer again it will disappear leaving the fish intact.

After a cold spell and now a beautiful Indian Summer it is hard to imagine that 100 years ago when the guns stood silent on the battle fields on the eleventh hour on the eleventh day on the eleventh month.

Everyone has seen pictures of the trenches, the mud, the exhausted men, the lines of captured soldiers, the wounded men, however often we forget the ones at home who had to carry on without the men folk.

The women and young boys, the old men kept the farms and land producing food for the country and the troops, looking after the rest of the family without the fit men folk.

The Mrs Sam along with the Five Friends sat together in the Wash house shed, the door flung open to enjoy the Autumn sunshine, as the story began, no one minded if it had been told before. Telling of how The Mrs Sam's Great Aunt Lizzie had been one of those women left to hold the fort, her parents, now older, (would be regarded as young today) needed help with the house and the teen aged children and Uncle Tommy, (today you would say special needs, he had been born with a deformed leg) and only Great Aunt Cissy had left home. So still a large household, even with Great Uncle Joe and Grandfather gone to war. So lots to do all the family maintained an allotment, so food to be sown, hoed, weeded, and gathered. Chickweed and dandelion leaves put in the wooden wheelbarrow and taken to the Old House for the chickens and rabbits. Food was an important part of life, the men worked hard so needed good wholesome food. Most women learnt very young how to cook keep house, and sew.

Keeping a happy house became even more important. The Mrs Sam said although she didn't know her Great Grandparents she knew they had high standards and were very loving.

The Family were close and as has been told The Old House in later years was a hive of activity on a Sunday.

The Old House without electricity or even indoor toilet was just the cover to keep the family safe and warm, it was the people in it that was The Old House. The most remembered Great Aunt Lizzie, she was a

rock, never cross, always content with her life, interested in the modern world, that began to change lives in the village.

Great Aunt Lizzie and her sister Cis contracted Scarlet Fever, a horrible disease, that came in waves across the country, a spell in the Isolation Hospital at Steppingley that never left their memory, it wasn't the food, the illness, being away from family, it was having their beautiful chestnut hair, that grew so long they could sit on it was cut short. Both later grew it long again but never to the previous length. The fashion in the Thirties was for a Bob style, Great Aunt Cis kept hers in a bun forever. In the late fifties Great Aunt Lizzie forgoed her bun style for a perm. The Mrs Sam still remembered helping her put long steel curlers to keep it looking as new, she told the others.

Little story here, said The Mrs Sam, my Dad had fell asleep one day in his chair, and felt he could do with a new look, so curled up his Brill creamed hair in steel curlers, put lipstick on his dropping lips. Someone tapped the door and as always walked in. Dad awoke and soon began to talk to the visitor taking him down the garden to see the hens and veg. Still unaware of how he looked.

Never knew how the visitor thought of Dad's appearance he never said. The caller had come to say goodbye, as he was retiring to the coast after many years of being Headmaster of the local school. Dad didn't give me a hundred lines, but his hair took a lot of brushing to straighten!

The end of The Great War had mixed emotions, the men would be home, wounded like Great Uncle Joe, never the same due to the mustard gas, Grandfather wounded but not defeated. The Mrs Sam said the saddest loss, the fiancée of Great Aunt Lizzie who lies somewhere in France.

A life lost, a life changed forever. What might have been was never spoken of just to carry on for the Peace to come.

After the Peace to come who was to know that an even as devastating event would spread throughout the World by the returning troops. It is now thought that The Spanish Flu killed between 50 millions to a hundred million people.

The Arts Society Woburn area met again on the 25th October to hear Dr Bella Image, a specialist in Roman Late Antiquity History talk about the renowned emperor Diocletian, a man who really saved the Roman Empire from collapsing in the 3rd century and built a superb huge Palace in Split, Croatia – then known as Dalmatia – ostensibly for his retirement, which he spent growing cabbages.

The Palace is a world heritage site, built in an advanced architectural Romanesque style that influenced the British architect Robert Adam in his 18th century Grand Tour to introduce neo-classical proportions to the great houses built in the mid to late Georgian period.

The next lecture on the 29th November will move to a very different theme. Mr Ian Gledhill will give an illustrated lecture entitled “Art and Illusion: stage scenery from Sophocles to Spiderman”, which should be entertaining as well as enlightening.

This is the Society’s pre-Christmas hospitality show – and all guests and visitors will be admitted free, and will enjoy warm mulled wine and mince pies with the members.

Aspley Guise Village Hall will open at 7.pm, and the talk will commence at 7.30. The Society is expecting a full house.

They help people with a wide range of problems including debt, benefits, housing, employment and family matters.

Advisers receive free formal accredited training with all expenses paid. As well as advice-giving, the service has volunteering roles for fundraising, research and campaigns, book-keeping and social media.

We are also looking for new trustees and would welcome anyone with accountancy skills.

In desperation Sir Ruthven goes to see his dead ancestors in the picture gallery in Ruddigore Castle and pleads with them for help. The audience are in for a treat with a few Gilbertian plot twists, directorial liberties and beautiful music.

Here we bring you a simple but delicious recipe for two that a reader has very kindly agreed to share with us:

SOMERSET CHICKEN You will need: 2 boneless chicken breast from your local butcher 2 crisp dessert apples 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 2 shallots 1 tbs olive oil 15g butter 1/2 tps light brown sugar 2 tbs crème fraiche Salt and black pepper About 150 ml dry cider, plus a little more for a slurp!

Firstly rinse and dry the apples, core and quarter them and cut into slices.

Then melt the butter in a frying pan over a low heat and add the olive oil. Then peel and chop up the shallots and fry until soft (the shallots - not you). Add

the apples to the shallots and sprinkle them with the brown sugar and turn the heat up a little and fry until everything starts to turn a golden brown.

Remove shallots and apples from the pan and put to one side.

(Then take a crafty slurp!)

Pop the chicken breasts in the pan and gently fry until golden on both sides. Pour the cider over the chicken, bring to the boil and simmer for about 10 minutes until cooked through.

Then chuck in the Worcestershire sauce and crème fraiche and season to taste. Return the shallots and apples to the pan and cook further for a couple of minutes or so.

And voila! Now is the time to call the other half to the table and serve with potatoes and vegetables or rice if you prefer.

My esteemed friend and colleague Henry Flagstaff very kindly lent me a book that he thought I would enjoy.

It was a novel by the ever dependable James Patterson entitled ‘Private LA’, one of a series of ‘Private’ novels which centre on the activities of the biggest detective agency with offices around the world.

Anyway, I started reading the book and one of the main characters described how he placed strawberries in a blender, added a shot of rum and some lime juice and made himself a daiquiri!

Right, thought I, - must get a blender. Duly whizzed off to the shop and purchased a modest model which I thought would do the job, then on the way home picked up some frozen fruit and a (small) bottle of rum

to experiment.

Having allowed the fruit to thaw I did exactly as was described in Mr Patterson’s novel and made my very first daiquiri! Lovely!

O n r e t u r n i n g h o me , however, Mrs. F. was none too pleased about these shenanigans and thought my explanation as to how it all came about was absurd!

The balance in the Fairweather household has been restored though - I am only allowed one daiquiri on special occasions on the basis that I make wholesome autumnal soups with said blender, and I am not to randomly purchase any other gadgets without expressly asking first!

Incidentally the book was absolutely first class - very exciting with a fast moving storyline, intriguing plot and what Henry would describe as a real page turner.

We have 3 buses and 11 routes, driven (and managed) by over 30 men and women volunteers, providing scheduled services around Central Bedfordshire. ANYONE can use Flittabus but most of all we help many elderly people to remain independent.

If you can spare just one or two half days a month we would like to hear from you. Why not come for a trial drive & see if you like it?

Charlie the Cockerel He should have been a Sunday dinner for someone, but he fell off the back of a lorry when on the way to be processed, in the local chicken factory, from the chicken farm. So having picked up by the thoughtful lorry driver, and came to live with The Mrs Sam and Sam Ilex. The Cockerel couldn't be taken inside the factory, Health and Safety reasons. People seemed to know that we took in waifs and strays, it happened often!

Charlie, now named, soon began to grow and grow, huge, with thick chunky legs, a fire red comb on his handsome head, his snow white feathers covering his body, and the finest of fine white tail feathers. Handsome bird and he knew it. He alluded to being top of the pecking order by his sweet nature. He loved his freedom, joining in with all the other animals.

He had never been handled, other than being caught for the crate journey and being picked up when rescued, he loved nothing better than going indoors to hop on The Mrs Sam's knee, to watch television. (earrings best taken off he loved them too). Charlie almost had a purr of contentment as his pristine white feathers were stroked, turning his head from side to side, watching the moving screen.

Occasionally hopping on the back of the blue buttoned Chesterfield sofa, admiring the handsome image, as his reflection in the large mirror moved as he did. Cooing and gently pecking the handsome image. Content very content!

In the winter he lay alongside the Old English Sheepdogs in front of the Wood Burner. Content very content!

Remembrance Sunday this year will take a special place in history as we celebrate PEACE which came 100 years ago with the ending of WW1. One of the most poignant events associated with WW1 which remains deep and unique today, is that of The Unknown Soldier buried in Westminster Abbey to help “ease the pain of father, mother, brother, sister, sweetheart, wife and friend” (The Dangerous Book of Heroes by Conn and David Iggulden) Here are a few maybe not so well known, facts associated with the events in November 1920.

It was an army padre Reverend David Railton who, walking back to his billet in 1916 noticed in a small garden at the back of the billet, a single grave. On the wooden cross marking that grave was written “AN UNKNOW N BRITISH SOLDIER” of The Black Watch. This gave Reverend Railton an idea but it was a further four years before permission was granted by King George V to have the body of a soldier removed from the Western Front and buried in Westminster Abbey.

The Unknown Soldier was carried across the channel from France to England in HMS Verdun.

From Dover he was taken to London by train travelling in the same railway carriage that had bought the body of Edith Cavell home in 1919, On 10th November his body rested over night at Victoria Station with a guard of honour of the King’s Company, Grenadier Guards.

At 09.15 hours on 11th November the Unknown Soldier continued his journey on a gun carriage to Westminster Abbey. His coffin was draped with the Union Flag that Reverend Railton had used as an altar cloth for makeshift services on the Western Front.

With pride, dignity and respect he was buried in a grave dug out in the floor of the Abbey by its Great West Door.

This is the only floor tomb in the Abbey which is never walked on by anyone, at any time, in any service.

The Unknown Soldier began by being the Remembrance for those unknown soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War but now also represents all those who have lost their lives in subsequent conflicts. ©Henrietta Wainsworth.

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

Well Autumn is really here now. My lawn is at last green again. It is nicely covered with brightly coloured Maple leaves who have races when we get a bit of breeze.

Seen in the back window of a car: I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

A house in Eversholt has an underground air raid shelter opposite it’s back door, it was built for Winston Churchill when he visited.

In Milton Bryan there is the old radio station which Bletchley Park used for transmitting to Germany. It is now used as a scout HQ. It is well hidden so you would have to ask in the village where it is.

As a youngster of 10 in 1940 we used to collect car registration numbers. There was one car near us which was a shooting brake with polished woodwork on it’s body. Then the Blacksmith used to arrive at the college farm in an Austin 7, then the Vet in her Riley - registration number CXO 891.

Then my uncle arrived from Yorkshire down to Sussex in AVA 533. No one came to school by car, even our headmaster walked 3/4 of a mile. You were lucky to get about 14 numbers in two weeks.

After the war we had to move out of our house for a whole year as the front and back had to be taken out as they were badly cracked with the tanks going by.

A near neighbour has just celebrated her 104th birthday. I went along with other friends to wish her well and have a slice of birthday cake.
