'The Old House' The Mrs Sam had spent a pleasant afternoon looking through the contents of the biscuit tin, it's ornate decorated lid of elephants, flowers and leaves now laid open filled with sorted out photographs. Many times these had been laid out on the covered polished table, in the Old House, especially when on a Sunday the house would be filled with visitors, who talked about of who was who, and of when the pictures were taken. As children you were taught to be quiet, so outside we played, if we haven't all walked up the fields and woods, so often missed some of the details. Having inherited the biscuit tin in recent years, some photos were quickly looked at, not always recognising the content. However thanks to The Mrs Sam, and her granddaughter Joanne and her fiancée Andy being invited to the Great Park, in Ampthill, in the summer for opening by the Mayor of a plaque to commemorate the Duke of Bedford's Training Camp Site for local men, to go off to join other regiments in W.W.1. one hundred years ago. A display area of the camp training exhibition, sitting beside The Roll of Honour, facsimile, the original is in Ampthill Church, the Mrs Sam, asked if she had any relatives, that might be on the Roll, thinking this was for the fallen, was amazed to see her Grandfather's Ampthill cousin, then right b e s i d e h er s h o u l d er Grandfather's name. Both

men had survived The Great War, although The Mrs Sam's Grandfather had come home disabled. This did not stop him earning a living, or riding his "sit up and beg" bike, up and down Ampthill Hill. The Mrs Sam, as a child, remembering being told he was too young to join up. Most country dwellers could shoot a gun, mainly for poaching rabbit or deer. Most thought it wouldn't be a long war, so friends and family members just joined up. His brother didn't join in Ampthill Park Camp. One of the sepia pictures, now faded with age, and with dog eared corners is none other of the plaque in Ampthill Church. So if the invitation to The Park hadn't been arranged by Stephen Hartley that photograph would have remained a mystery. On looking further into another photo of men sitting at tables, this too being The Training Camp. For all those interested in our colourful local History events are taking place in The Great Ampthill Park to remember and never forget all those local lads that went to France, Flanders, many not to return, others living with their wounds the rest of lives. 2018 One Hundred Years ago the Great War ended. When you are young the memories told by older friends and relatives might not seem important as playing in the garden. However bits and pieces do get recalled, as with the sepia picture, that too has become a memory for the Mrs Sam. A description now written in pencil on the back. D.O.T.

By Julio Van Peebles Julio’s worries and useless facts: 1) Does anyone still eat paste sandwiches? 2) Did you know that when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded shortly after launch in 1986, a football survived the disaster? 3) Do double yolked eggs produce two chickens? 4) Did you know that the world’s oldest operating electric railway is in Brighton? 5) How much is an undisclosed sum? Julio’s interesting ‘Pie’ fact: Did you know that this year’s annual pie festival is at the Queens Head in Ampthill on Saturday 13th October?

19th October A very, very Happy Birthday to Katy

Lots of love your dutiful husband xx

Here’s a little more whimsy from one of our readers: I went into a pet shop and said, ‘Can I buy a goldfish?’ The guy said, ‘Do you want an aquarium?’ I said ‘I don't care what star sign it is.’

I only know two tunes: one of them is ‘Yankee Doodle’ and the other one isn’t. How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink? My friend’s husband is so silly that he thought he could buy a wind powered clothes drier. The only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well. Ensure that if you have an appointment it is not important, that way it won’t matter if you are late. Most cars on the road have only one occupant. Usually the driver. Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes. You could cheer yourself up by making a list of things to do that you have already done. You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write. My friend thinks that artery is a study of paintings. When you have a stressful problem run away from it. Fast as you can. The best way to pay for a lovely moment is to enjoy it.

HUMAN GIVENS THERAPIST MHGI. HG Dip. (Dist) PSA. Public Standards Authority Accredited Register

The world of counselling/psychotherapy is a very different place to what it was even ten years ago! Neurological science has provided insights that when combined with the best of other approaches provides a fast and effective solution focused therapy (SFBT) that is embodied in Human Givens. Treatment does not just mean sitting and endlessly talking, it is also about effectively understanding the issues and providing lasting realistic change. Therapy thoughts

Rooms can be filled with books on depression yet while it can be a difficult and sometimes even dangerous emotion it remains for most people one of the most readily treatable conditions. Unfortunately too much fantastical thinking about depression from the past still has hold today. When innate needs aren’t met it causes worry and rumination, this leads to excessive REM sleep which exhausts the brain. The defence part of the brain goes to alarm adding adrenalin and cortisol to an exhausted body. Its an awful trance state to get stuck in. There is no need for pseudo science. Separate the core identity from the symptom, meet innate needs in balance, reorder sleep, relax the brain and body.

07702 080623 Tel & Fax: 01525 714057 Lovers of Croatia may have spent time wandering around the fabulous remains of the Palace of Diocletian in Split. Diocletian was a roman emperor of the later 3rd century, famous for his administrative efficiency and loathed for his severe persecution of Christians in the area. He built a fabulous palace for his retirement in Split, which also served as a Roman army fortress. Much remains of this building. His mausoleum was converted into a cathedral and the architecture of the palace heavily influenced the neo-classical architecture espoused by Robert Adam in the late 18th century. It is a world heritage site and Dr Isabella Image is going to talk about it to the Arts Society in Aspley Guise village hall at 7.30 on 25th October. Admission is free for members and guests are welcome for a small fee. Members will also be visiting Peckover House in Wisbech, an elegant Georgian National Trust property, and also take in a visit to Octavia Hill’s birthplace. Octavia Hill was a reforming philanthropist in Victorian times who helped to establish the National Trust. So, lots to look forward to in October. To join the Arts Society contact the membership secretary on 01908 582313. New members wanted for Ampthill & District Probus Club (for retired professional business people aiming to give their grey matter a work out). Reward - good company and enjoyment with like minded ‘young at heart ‘ professionals. Contact Alan on 01234 961786 for the low down or view our website on www.ampthillprobus.co.uk.

With Henrietta Wainsworth. Michaelmas Day, September 29th, seems to come and go with little celebration, yet it is an important date in the church calendar and is also steeped in tradition and superstition. It is the feast of St. Michael the Archangel who hurled the devil out of heaven for his evil ways back down to earth. Legend has it that when he fell down he landed in a bramble bush. He cursed the fruits, scorching them with his fiery breath, stamped on them and spat them out making them unfit for human eating. Legend goes on to suggest he renews his curse every year and so it is considered unlucky to pick blackberries after Michaelmas Day. Michaelmas Day is sometimes called Goose Day. Goose Fairs are still held in some English towns although geese are no longer sold. The most famous of these is the Nottingham Goose Fair. The Goose Fair in Tavistock and the Michaelmas Goose Fair in Colyford, Devon are the only two remaining smaller goose fairs that can be visited.”Eat a goose on Michaelmas Day, want not

for money all the year.” Apparently Queen Elizabeth 1 was said to be eating goose when news came of the defeat of the Armada. In celebration she declared that she would, from then on, always eat goose at Michaelmas. The Victorians believed that trees planted at Michaelmas would grow especially well and in Ireland finding a ring hidden in a meat pie meant one would soon be married. September 29th is also quarter day and farms are often sold around M i c h a e l ma s , p r o b a b l y because this falls at the end of harvest and the beginning of working the land for the following year. St Michael the patron saint of the sea and maritime lands, of ships and boatmen, of horses and horsemen together with the traditions and superstitions around Michalemas have once again passed for another year but forever belong to time itself. I leave you with a couple of sayings to mull over. “If St Michael brings many acorns, Christmas will cover the fields with snow” and “A dark Michaelmas, a light Christmas” © Henrietta Wainsworth.

Bob the Buck Rabbit. Bob the rabbit didn't understand that he hadn't been born a hen, or a bantam hen, duck or a indeed a dog or a cat. He loved nothing better than giving the Mrs Sam a good morning kiss and having a cuddle as the hutch doors were opened. He loved a fuss. As all the other animals socialised together in the large garden and yard . He couldn't wait as he raced towards wherever the chickens, ducks and bantam and join in whatever there was found to do, jumping high in the air, for fun , it seemed. He followed them around, finding dandelion leaves and chickweed, tasty titbits in the garden, while the others found worms, slugs and insects to enjoy. When the baby Muscovy ducks came to live, he could be found with the ducklings, nestling in his jet black fur, all enjoying the Sun. Bob the Rabbit was unusually large, in fact very large. Nowadays giant rabbits are kept as house pets, bigger than some dogs. At that time he was different, so excellent for breeding purposes. He returned for his life of leisure. He loved visiting the house, knowing where the bread bin was, he liked crusts, knowing that The Mrs Sam would give him one, and a tasty carrot. A young friend of young Chris told The Mrs Sam that Bob the Rabbit had chased him up the yard, bit him on the leg. How could that be rabbits don't bite! He was lovely! One day Sam Ilex came up the yard with Bob the Rabbit holding onto his jeans for dear life. He made good money in Peacock's Auctions in Horne Lane. Yes rabbits do bite! The Mrs Sam had always wondered why they had such large buck teeth.

Happy Birthday to Stephen for the 9th October! With Basher McGraw

There is little good news in the national newspapers these days so Basher was pleased to read that on Sunday 7th October Doctor Who will be back on our screens. Naturally there have been the expected grumbles and moans that this series risks being ruined as the new Doctor is now going to be played by the

actress Jodie Whittaker and the Time Lord will transform into a Time Lady. We wait to see the reappearance of the Tardis and apparently there will not be a single Dalek in this series. Stay positive; this series will be different by the very fact the Doctor is different but, there is nothing to say it won’t be as good, Give it a chance.

Happiest of birthday wishes to Roo who has made it to 12 years of age, how time has flown!

All our love Mum, Richard, Granni, Dotty and all xxx

This month we bring some more of Montgolfier’s School day reminiscences: One night we got home from school and collected the milk can and went down to the College Farm for the milk. On walking back up the lane about five bullets splashed in the puddle at the lane side. They were at the end of their trajectory and just falling back to earth. Another night on getting home from school, in the field in front of the house was a crashed German bomber with a full load of bombs and five crew. The crew were buried in our Churchyard with white wooden crosses saying Unknown Airmen. Later they were given names. At the end of the war they were exhumed and taken back to Germany. Fifty years later someone realised there should be another bomb; it was found about 1 foot down and had been scratched by the plough and we land workers had been over it all that time. It was a 1,000lb bomb. I even have a photo of it. Something we used to pick up near home was nice brass shiny cannon shells unfired and dropped by aircraft. Not a lot of them - we used to hide them in the guttering of the outhouse. They soon tarnished. One Sunday afternoon we went out to look at them and heard planes coming. There were five German bombers showing their camouflaged tops. A wonderful sight. They then levelled out and started firing. We heard that they had shot a cow and a bullet went through a baby’s pram by a farm door and luckily the baby was not hurt On D-Day all the soldiers going by were waving to us and throwing us handfuls of coins to get sweets.

Episode: 61 .................... Chilli Con Carnage Revisited (pt. 10) Al’s Pal’s Halloween Chilli As it is the time of year for ghosts, ghouls, and all things ghastly, I thought I would combine Halloween season with my continuing chilly (sorry I couldn't resist) chilli recipe tales. This time however I am going to cheat and choose a recipe that: a} I did not experience personally in my North American adventures; b} I did not actually try the recipe myself, yet; and c} I have not received any feedback on it at all. I did though get the recipe from a pal of mine in the US who suggested this recipe, and sent it to me once he'd heard that I was compiling a chilli journal. However, once the pumpkins start appearing on the shelves in the grocery stores, I will most certainly give it go. So, more than likely, by the time you read this column, I will have already tried it. It sounds delicious. The addition of pumpkin to a chilli not only makes it extra hearty but also adds a delicious sweetness that will go so well with all the spices. And, as pumpkins are rich in vitamins A and C, it makes it quite healthy too. This recipe can be done either on the hob or in the slow cooker. (if you are going to do it in the slow cooker I'd brown the meat and sauté the vegetables first). My pal suggests simmering it for 2 hours on the hob as they "enjoy the aroma of a slowcooked pot on the stove that fills their apartment with a divine smell". The one ingredient that might test our limitations is a bottle of pumpkin beer, the alcohol does get burned off, but if you prefer a n on-al coholic alternative, use chicken or vegetable stock instead. Once you're ready, the chilli is served in smaller hollowed out pumpkins used for bowls. Fill the bowls with the chilli 3/4 of the way and pop the pumpkin bowls in the oven for 30 more minutes, and then, when it's time to eat, you can scoop a

little pumpkin flesh onto your spoon. The scooped out pumpkin flesh is included in the recipe which makes the chilli slightly thicker. My pal gave me this recipe based on a Halloween party for a couple of families so the recipe has 8 to 10 servings, so adjust accordingly. Ingredients:Flesh from a medium to large pumpkin, deseeded 600g lean turkey mince 10 oz chicken sausage 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 orange bell pepper, diced 1 can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 large can chopped tomatoes 1 can chicken broth 1 bottle of pumpkin beer or 250 ml chicken / veg stock 2 tbsp chilli powder 1 tsp oregano 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tbsp brown sugar 4 tbsp olive oil sea salt and black pepper sour cream grated cheddar cheese spring onions, sliced Method; Thinly slice the sausages and set aside with the turkey mince. In a large heavy bottomed pan, add 2 tbsp of the olive oil and sauté the garlic and the onion until soft. Add the bell peppers and sauté for a further 5 minutes. Place in a bowl and set aside, in the same pan, add the remaining oil and brown the turkey mince and sausage. After about 10 minutes, season with the salt & pepper. Once the meat has browned, add the vegetables and then the tomatoes, pumpkin, beans and all the spices. Add the pumpkin beer (or alternative) and chicken broth and stir. Lower the heat and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning accordingly. Now would be a good time to hollow out your smaller pumpkins or squashes ready for use as bowls. Serve the chilli in the bowls with some grated cheese, spring onion, and a dollop of sour cream.
