Saturday 8th September is the date for this year’s Flitton and Greenfield Gala Day which is held at Flitton & Greenfield Village Hall and Recreation Ground, Greenfield Road, Flitton MK45 5DR. The event is from 1.00pm until 5.00pm, and admission is free.

Christmas cards are already appearing in the shops, at one time handmade cards were lovingly made and sent just a few days before. The Christmas present shopping done Christmas Eve in Bedford when children and parents toured round the shops, a lovely atmosphere, the town packed with people, carrying shopping bags, overflowing with goodies.

The Mrs Sam often watched the present she would dearly love being bought for another relative. Over time the realisation that it was for her anyway on opening the presents next day.

Disappointment gone turned into pleasure.

Mind you some preparations this month would have been already be progressing. The raspberry gin sat in the scullery, under the stairs, becoming mature. The bottles of cowslip wine, one of the tastiest of homemade wine. Due to today's conservation efforts this is a fond memory of The Old House. The Christmas Puddings had been boiled in the old copper, the same silver sixpences wrapped in greaseproof paper each year waiting inside the pudding for eager children to find on Christmas Day. Pickles and chutney, pickled onions all made from the summer's harvest. The best being pickled beetroot, grown up the allotment, hoed and tended all summer. This being boiled in a huge saucepan, ready for Sunday tea, still slightly warm in a thickly butter spread buttered bread. Tasty. Nearly as good as thick spread buttered bread and sugar. This was a treat after childhood illnesses!

The blackberry jam, full of vitamin c, the rhubarb and ginger jam, delicious in the cold winter months to come, the tangy gooseberry the finest of taste.

The king of summers harvest must be the elderberry, the wine is as good as any made, and the elderflower makes a clear fine summer wine, and the flowers can be preserved in icecubes for late summer parties. Elderberry gin is d el ic io us. R ea dy fo r Christmas!

A relish receipt for you:elderberries, blackberries, red onions, red apples Fry onions, add elderberries and blackberries for a few minutes, add elderberry wine and thinly sliced apple, let cook till fruit just cooked, don't overcook, sweeten to taste with honey. Serve warm with pheasant, white meats etc.

Of course sweet homemade mincemeat from dried fruits saved up over the weeks to be ladled into warm jars, topped off with homemade labels and gingham cloth tied on with coloured ribbons, the brandy poured in from time to time to add full flavour to the coming mince pies.

In The Old House from September on it was busy busy. The barn needed to be filled with wood, coal ordered, just in case it was a bad winter. The potatoes, carrots, parsnips and any other root crop grown, put in barrels with dry earth or straw. Onions strung on string and hung up in the barn.

The nuts from the woods were saved, the parents did buy the very exotic Brazil Nuts and peanuts from Bedford Market, and the boxes of dates. So exotic!

The one thing that came down from the dresser to be on display for a short time, a nutcracker. Not an ordinary nutcracker. This one has the shape of a dog, a Victorian dog. He has a fine muzzle, small droopy ears stumpy stable short legs, a very long tail. You lift the tail pop the cobnut in the mouth, press down, with luck the nut cracks. A Christmas novelty, made to last by the Victorians, still used today.

The Arts Society Woburn Area open their programme of lectures on the 27th September with a talk on The Global Art Market. Ever wondered why rich people are prepared to bargain vast sums of money in famous Auction rooms for works of Art, ancient and modern? The TV programme Fake or Fortune demonstrates how the confirmed provenance of a work of art can turn the value of a painting from a few hundred to millions of pounds. Art collections began with the wealthy princes of the Renaissance; the Grand tours of the Aristocracy ensured that great Art travelled from obscure studios in Europe to grace the walls of stately homes; and the new wealth of the emerging middle classes sought to emulate these practices and prices. The lecturer Tom Flynn is an art historian and consultant, an author and senior lecturer in the subject. His book on The International Art Market was a brilliant exposition of the subject of ownership and display of Great Art. The talk will be presented at The Village Hall, Aspley Guise starting at 7.30 pm on the 27th September. Visitors will be welcome. A truck driver had to deliver five hundred penguins to the local zoo. As he was driving his truck through the countryside, the truck broke down.

After waiting by the side of the road for about three hours, Mr Chuckles arrived but found the truck was too big for his tow truck.

The driver was mortified but the delivery had to be made so he offered Mr Chuckles £500 to take the penguins to the zoo for him.

The next day, the truck driver arrived in town and saw Mr Chuckles crossing the road with 500 penguins walking in single file behind him and steam gently rising from each ear.

The truck driver jumped out of his truck and said, ‘What's going on? I gave you £500 to take these penguins to the zoo!’

‘I did take them to the zoo. And I had money left over, so now we're going to see a movie.’ growled Mr Chuckles.

Buffy's Texas Chilli Recipe: (see the Mammoth Man Diaries on page 27) Ingredients:- (serves 2) 1 can pinto beans 500g minced beef 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 onion, finely chopped 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped 1-2 tbsp. chilli powder, according to taste 1 tbsp. cumin 1 can tomato soup (try not to get creamed of ...) cider vinegar Salt & pepper to taste vegetable oil

01525 405393 07889 058345 In a large frying pan heat the oil and brown the meat with the garlic powder, salt and pepper, chopped onion and chopped green pepper.

Once meat has browned, pour off the excess fat and add the beans to the mixture.

Add the chilli powder, cumin, tomato soup and cider vinegar. Simmer mixture for an additional 2 hours for flavour to blend.

Once cooked leave it to stew in its own juices, the longer the better. Ideally this dish can be prepared and left overnight or all day, then just warmed up. Serve with grated cheese on top and on its own in a bowl, or on a bed of rice.

Daisy May This delightful creature, the black and white speckled bantam hen, had a way with her, not only with humans but the other animals she lived with. No problem as she sat tight on her clutch of eggs, waiting for the arrival of her brood, around her were others only to willing to sit on the nest. As soon as she rose to stretch her tiny legs and have some food, others were there to take over. The Silky bantam cockerels were well ahead of the times, in looking after the warm eggs, scratching the eggs underneath their bodies, then sitting tight! The larger hens would take turns, and the newly arrived Muscovy ducks they learnt this too. The Mrs Sam had completely forgotten how these ducks had joined the family. Young Andrew put her right by telling how he had brought home the Muscovy ducks in his pockets, (probably on his bike), from another friend who like him was animal mad! This lad kept a menagerie of animals himself.

These ducks grow as big as geese, will tell you stories about their adventures soon!

Why a large black buck rabbit needed to join in and sit on clutch of eggs is a mystery to science. Bob the rabbit was so gentle, he never smashed an egg though!

When the tiny eggs hatched, it was like a rugby scrum as to who should care for the chicks. The brood of chicks came in all sorts of colours, always more cockerels than hens. The white silky were delicate, feathers grew long on their legs. The handsome black silkies strutted up and down, the brown, red feathers of the tails of the other so proud cockerels made a pretty picture.

The young had plenty of aunts and uncles to fuss over them.

A Jammy Dodger May 1986 Some 30 years ago, I was the support technician for an FE computer lab, among the courses run was a BA in Combined Studies; The students ranged in age from 19 to mid 40's and included several very capable ladies who had serious part time jobs and young families; Intelligent and VERY hard workers, some would say â&#x20AC;&#x153;drivenâ&#x20AC;?!

One morning I arrived at the lab to find one of the ladies, who I will call June, hard at work with an air of frustration tending to anger!

As I came in, June proclaimed, while waving a 4 1/2 inch disc, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have lost 4 hours work from yesterday eveningâ&#x20AC;?. She had already tried the disc in another machine and it failed to be readable there.

examination showed no obvious physical damage I slide the steel cover back to reveal the disc inside and rotated the disc to reveal the entire surface, this soon exposed the problem, a small, (3 year old?) finger print made visible by the presence of strawberry jam!

The smudge was soon removed but the disc r e ma i n e d u n r e ad ab l e , however I did manage to read it on a machine in my office; the jam had apparently transferred to the drive on June's machine, that drive may need to be replaced. I asked June which machine she had tried her disc in before I arrived, as it may also be damaged. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of themâ&#x20AC;? she replied sheepishly!

The Corn Dolly had its own ceremonial tradition by being carried high on a pitchfork with many peoples singing and dancing to celebrate the final harvest. It would then be given a home for the winter to bring good luck for the next harvest and at that time would be ploughed back into the land.

There are several designs for the Corn Dolly: Cambridge has the Umbrella; Stafford the Knot; Suffolk the Horseshoe and Yorkshire the Spiral to name but a few.

The original Harvest supper would have been lavish with plenty of meat, vegetables, pies, tarts and ale provided by the farmer for his workers. Today many parishes still celebrate with a Harvest Supper which is considered a social event and a pleasing way of raising money for the parish church.

Very often the goods are distributed around to those in need within the parish.

With September comes the mystic morning mist of autumn together with the regally rich colours in the countryside; the gentle warmth of the retiring summer sun and an ending of the yearly Harvest, which should be completed by Michaelmas Day, September 29th.

With all of this comes the wonderful Harvest Festival and we have the Rev. Robert Hawker from Morwenstow, Cornwall to thank for starting the modern tradition, when in 1843 Harvest Festival was celebrated in Church.

Thereon Harvest Festival should traditionally be held on the Sunday nearest to the Harvest Moon which this year falls on Tuesday September 25th.

Perhaps one of the best known traditions associated with the Harvest is The Corn Dolly which is also known as the Kern Dolly or the Mell. This was made with corn from the final field to be harvested. It represented the Corn Spirit or the goddess of the grain and apparently some Corn Dollies have been found

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

I think the longest traffic queue I have ever been in must be the eighteen mile one I was in waiting to go over the Golden Gate Bridge back into San Francisco.

I remember my father always saying that a cup of tea is the best drink you can have on a very hot day. I think he was right.

A friend sent me a nice photo of a Golden Eagle flying over her garden. She gets lots of sea eagles but Golden Eagles only occasionally. She lives with her husband on the tiny island of Soay just three miles form the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye. They are the only 2 people living there.

I read in the paper that people use their mobile phones about every seventeen minutes. I use mine about three times a week.

I was once driven round Holland for two days in a London taxi with London number plates. I got some strange looks must have thought I was rich.

As a thirteen year old in 1941 during WWII we were walking the 3½ miles to school and as we went round a corner we saw what we thought was an unexploded bomb. We tip toed past it then ran. A few days later we found out that it was an empty fuel tank jettisoned by a German bomber.

At lunch time a few days later we had 2 huge bombs drop in the school grounds making 12 foot deep craters. They blew all the windows out in the school which had sticky tape all over then in a Union Jack pattern. The station next door lost all of it’s windows, so did the little cobbler’s shop over the road from the school.

Chilli Con Carnage Revisited (pt. 9) Buffy’s Kansas Chilli In November 2006 I went on a 'road-trip' from Denver, Colorado, to Topeka, Kansas, for a conference with some pals. It was a time of some political interest in the U.S. as the 2006 United States elections were being held on the Tuesday, November 7th, which was in the middle of Republican President George W. Bush's second term. All of the United States House of Representatives seats and one third of the United States Senate seats were being contested in this election, as well as 36 state and two territorial governorships, many state legislatures, four territorial legislatures and many state and local races.

The election resulted in a sweeping victory for the Democratic Party which captured control of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and won a majority of governorships and state legislatures from the Republican Party. The victory of the Democratic Party in the 2006 Congressional elections was a major milestone for an additional reason: it saw the election of the first woman to serve as the Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, became the highest-ranking woman in the history of the government of the United States upon her election as Speaker in January 2007. She continues to hold this distinction, as of May 2018. It was also the first election in U.S. history in which the losses for one side were so lopsided that the victorious party did not lose a single incumbent or open seat in Congress or governor's mansion.

We arrived at our hotel and convention centre just as the Republicans were abandoning the hotel and their supposed 'victory celebration' party. The hotel management were in a state of some uncertainty and

concern as they apparently had food, beer and wine set aside for the Republican's party, and did not know what to do with it all. Once the conference organiser had informed the hotel caterers that 250 archaeologists were coming to the conference over the next few days, they were reassured. Actually all the beer had gone by the time the conference had started, on the 9th November. Each morning I went down for breakfast in the restaurant, and would say 'Good Morning' to the lobby staff. One morning near the end of my stay, one of the female receptionists in the lobby called me over after I had relayed my usual greeting.

"Hello, is there anything the matter?" I enquired politely and smiled. "Oh no, not at all". Said a very attractive brunette with greenish-brown eyes. "I just wanted to hear your lovely English accent, can you please say something, anything at all?" Well, all I could think of was to ask if it would be out of the question if we could meet for a drink later. She agreed, and said she finished at 4.00 that afternoon, but it would be more appropriate for us to meet outside of the hotel, so she told me about a little bar in town. We met at the bar and had a really nice evening, There was a Tex/Mex restaurant close by and that's where I had the following recipe. It turned out that my date was called Buffy, hence Buffy's Kansas Chilli. It was slightly sweet and not too hot, but it came with little ramekins of jalapenos, red chillies, and smoked chipotle chillies, plus a range of sauces varying in strength. (see recipe on page 20 of this issue).

What happened at the close of the evening you may well ask? Well a real English gentleman should not reveal any secrets, but suffice to say, I did not have to say 'Good morning' to Buffy in the hotel lobby the next morning ...
