Tuesday 24th October 2017 A (GUIDED) WALK IN THE PARK Following successful walks in September, The Friends of Ampthill Park would like to invite young and old to join them on Tuesday 24th October at the new Town Council Offices in the central car park for heritage and natural history walks.

Walks are from 10.00am until 3.00pm, and will leave the new Council Offices in the Park at regular intervals and take between 1.1/2 to 2 hrs. There are short, medium and long walks which can be adapted for young and old to explain the heritage and natural history of the Park. All are welcome.

Additional car parking will be available in the West car park.

The Five Old Boys, Rabbit Bob, Dapper Charlie, Charlie, Ten Acre and Sam Ilex had slowly walked down the sweeping path to the Wash House Shed, all laden with trug or wicker baskets, filled to the brim with summer's bounty, which were carefully put on the white scrubbed kitchen table. Sam Ilex on the way down had shouted the Mrs Sam to put the kettle on, it being too warm, yet awhile for the pot belly stove to be lite, wouldn't be long, before the kettle boiled the winter days away. The Old Boys sat around making themselves comfortable, still able to look out of the open doorway to the late summer's flowers, still going strong. The tray of tea, usual homemade cakes were dutifully placed on the cricket table, poured out by The Mrs Sam, who joined in by saying that the wireless news was full of what a bountiful wild harvest this year had been.

Well, when you have plenty of wild harvest to forage, and hedgerows are laden with berries it will be a hard winter, but it could be that the blossom missed the early frosts, Sam Ilex thought.

Much discussion followed as to which folklore was correct. Don't forget to leave up to your knees for the foxes and mice, hedgehogs and birds, the very top for the larger birds, the middle hedgerows is yours to pick.

This all reminds me, said the Mrs Sam, when we lived in The Old House visitors were plenty, up to the Kings Wood walking or blackberry picking, perhaps mushrooming, even Wooding, (gathering wood). On this occasion Cousin George, probably under instructions from his Mum, Great Aunt Gertie, came over to go blackberry picking up the wood fields, only Dad and George went, this was unusual, everyone would go. Strange! Later on both arrived back empty handed. Mum quizzed the pair, lots of apologies, between getting their breath back. Dad had seen some huge great blackberries on the hedgerows up Haw Hills, when the family went to the motorbike scrambling earlier and couldn't resist, however the farmer was very protective of his land.

Hence why we all hadn't gone too.

The farmer didn't outrun the pair, but the shotgun was real enough.

his Dad Sid, he could run with the hidden rabbits in his jacket, and gun and jump the five-bar gate at the bottom of the Kings Wood hill without touching the gate. George and Dad never lived it down.

Would loved to have been a fly on the wall when George had to explain the lack of fruit to Great Aunt Gertie when he got home.

By the way boys, have heard scrambling is up the Haw Hills at Houghton Conquest, haven't heard if the public can go, said the Mrs Sam. We took young Andrew and Chris when they were young. Can't have been a lot of money then Sam? Everything seemed cheaper then Sam replied. Then turning to the Mrs Sam, do you remember when we took the boys and Phillipe, the French exchange boy, and our friends who had his brother stopping with their son Mark. Everything went well that day. However Phillipe spent much of his time riding an adapted bike with huge great handlebars the wrong way up the High Street. In London we waved him goodbye on the back of a red double decker bus, he wasn't quick enough getting off the open step Happy Days! These exchanges are educational and beneficial!

Chris enjoyed his stay in France, has tried to find Phillipe, so far no luck.

All Five Friends agreed it is hard to keep in touch nowadays, too many things going on, life isn't so simple as it was. Sam Ilex said he has a collection of postcards sent to people just to say they had arrived home safe after a day spent with them. Just as emails are sent now.

The Mrs Sam passed round old postcards from the 1904’s from her family biscuit tin, saying will be home for tea that day. Post not so quick now. Also said Sam Ilex the pictures are of local views, some long gone, replaced by new housing, they are a social history in themselves and worth collecting.

When on holiday go to carboots that's where you will find them.

Sam Ilex talked of going up Ampthill Park for a walk with little dog and had run into that nice chap Stephen Hartley, the one that did Tommies Footprints, (so moving,) well this year he is honouring the Canadian Soldiers who camped up the Park.

Next year One Hundred Years end of W.W.I. another remembrance, the thought is for everyone to grow poppies in their front garden to cover this island in ribbons of red.

In Autumn 1917 the 126th Canadian Forestry Corps was deployed to fell trees in Ampthill and the surrounding district to support the war effort. The activity threatened the Victorian beauty spot of Cooper's Hill and attracted considerable discontent among the town’s folk. The Canadian troops assisted

by Portuguese labourers cleared a large swathe of mature pine trees, and shipped them off by rail for use at the Front.

Despite this, the Canadian troops developed a warm bond with the people of Ampthill by taking part in local activities and themselves providing concerts at the Y.M.C.A. hut. A year on the Corps departed as friends and Sgt. Herman Porter wrote of the experience. The Alameda Walk was spared the axe and Cooper's Hill has gone onto regenerate as a tranquil heath and site of Special Scientific Interest that we now hold dear.

In November there are two complementary opportunities to hear about the Canadians: WWI Talk: Canadian Troops in Ampthill Friday, 17th November - an illustrated talk at 7:30pm in Parkside Hall, Ampthill MK45 2HX. Special guests, Ampthill Town Band, will open the evening. Tickets are available from Ampthill Town Council, The Hub and Number 14.

Guided Walk: WWI Canadian Troops in Ampthill On Sunday, 19 November - please gather at The Hub in Ampthill Great Park to depart at 2pm. The walk finishes at St. Andrew's Church in time to watch the Christmas Lights.

We are pleased to bring you this recipe sent to us by the lovely Alex in Fuddlerland: Hidden Nutella Pancakes You will need: 135g plain flour Pinch of salt 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1 egg 130 ml milk 2 tbsp melted butter/marg Oil for frying 2 tbsp chocolate nutty spread In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients (flour, caster sugar, baking powder & salt) In a jug measure 130 ml of milk and add one egg.

Whisk until combined. In a small bowl, microwave the butter, then combine with the milk and egg mixture in the jug.

Slowly add half of the jug mixture to the dry ingredients in the bowl to make a smooth paste Add the rest of the jug mixture to the paste.

In a pre-heated non stick frying pan add a small amount of oil (sunflower or vegetable oil will suffice) and wipe excess away with kitchen towel.

Using a table spoon, spoon 2 or 3 spoons of batter into the pan.

Add a blob of Nutella into the middle of each pancake and cover with more butter.

When bubbles appear round the edgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of the pancakes flip them so that the other side is cooked. â&#x20AC;˘ Enjoy your pancakes hot or cold with sliced strawberries!

Basher has been quite despondent of late when walking through Ampthill.

He has seen empty chip cartons littering the pavements; fish and chip paper stuffed into hedges; bottles and cans of drink chucked under hedges; black rubbish bags left in the street, overflowing and

litter spilling out. Worst of all, across Coopers Hill the odd used dog mess bag hanging off branches. These misdemeanours are the ones that Basher feels he can mention but some are too gross to comment on and he leaves that to the readers own imagination and interpretation.

Chapter 3 Re- cap: Martha, whose husband was reported as missing in WW2 was taking a quiet moment in her garden and was watching with interest a spider spin its web. The Web mysteriously changed through the colours of the rainbow.

This had shaken Martha who decided to take a walk in the paddock to clear her head and bring her world back to reality.

But it was not the paddock she knew. All had changed. The ponies Twizel and Brandon were nowhere to be seen.

There were now four rows of magnificent fruit trees in full leaf and abundant with fruit; apples, plums and pears. The paddock had recreated itself into an orchard. All over it there were clumps of blood red poppies with sombre black

centres swaying gracefully to the whistle of the breeze. The cloudless sky seemed a more vivid blue and the sun shared its deeper caressing warmth.

Disorientated Martha walked further into the newly created orchard. “Have I moved through time, or has time moved through me” she whispered to herself. Then she saw him in the distance standing by the style that leads into the farmer’s field. She stood rooted to the spot. He was in full army uniform and was waving to her. She did not respond because, although he seemed familiar, she did not recognise him. Edward had been on her mind again since reading the headlines of the newspaper that morning. What cruel trick was her mind playing on her? This was all too much. Martha closed her eyes in the hope that the world

would right itself but when she opened them again he was gone, yet the paddock remained in its changed orchard state.

With her heart pounding Martha ran to the garden gate.

On reaching it she turned, looked and stared for a few moments because she saw that the orchard had once again returned to the state of a paddock. No fruit trees; no poppies; just Twizel and Brandon grazing peacefully.

Martha shivered as she pushed the garden gate open and ran back into the safety and familiarity of her garden.

Closing the gate she leant against it and once again closed her eyes, “Oh my” she whispered in an effort to feel calm again.

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

Some time ago I went to see a film, I can’t remember what it was called. I went with the star of the film. It seemed strange watching the film for over an hour with her sat beside me.

The previous evening we had been to see Billy Elliot.

Sign on a crane company van: ‘Our business is really picking up.’

When I was a small child the woman next door used to butter the end of a brown loaf then hold it up to her chest and cut a slice off then repeat as necessary. I’ve never seen anyone else do this.

My Father chose his final resting place because of the super view. The Church is on high ground with views of lovely valleys, hills and villages and I’m told on very clear days you can see almost to Stratford on Avon. You can also see Waddesden Manor where he worked for Dorothy Rothschild as her estate carpenter. He also made the Church gate close by.

A Church clock on Dartmoor, instead of having numbers 1 to 12 has the letters My Dear Mother round the clock face.

The shortest telephone number I’ve ever come across was Gairloch 2. The big hotel in Gairloch, Scotland.

CHRISTMAS ISN’T FAR AWAY! Now could be a very good time to book your festive advertising in The Fuddler!

Several of these recipes I have talked about include 'chilli mix', and as I know a lot of you will not have some of this lurking about in the cupboard, I thought I'd include an easy way of making sure you'll always have some in reserve. It's quick, easy, and actually tastes better than the bought ready prepared. This recipe takes about 5mins (if you have all the ingredients that is) and you'll need: 4 tbsp chilli powder, 2 tbsp cumin, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp chilli flakes, 1 tsp cayenne pepper (less if you're a delicate flower), 2 tsp paprika, 1 tsp oregano, 3 tsp crushed sea salt, and 4 tsp black pepper.

In a medium bowl combine the ingredients give a quick gentle stir. Store in an ait tight jar at room temperature, in your condiment cupboard will be fine. It will keep for up to a year. And for an example for 500g of meat I'd use 11/2 tbsp, use according to taste.

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 6) Hard Times in Virginia: 2 Continuing with the chilli dishes I experienced in Virginia at the “Hard Times” restaurant, the next recipe I tried was the Cincinnati Chilli.

Introduced in 1922 by Greek immigrants, it is a fine mix of minced beef; preferably leftovers, with a tomato base and sweeter spices, including cinnamon and served with thin spaghetti pasta. So, for this quite unusual chilli dish, you'll require: some good quality minced beef, some chilli spice mix (or mixed spice will do), carton of tomato sauce / juice, tomato paste / puree, 1 small onion, ground cinnamon tbsp of vinegar, and enough water to cover the meat. Mix the meat and water together and bring to a boil. Mix in some spice mix once meat is thoroughly browned off, add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar and onion and mix in thoroughly.

Cook uncovered for 30 mins to one hour at medium heat, stirring occasionally, a traditional Cincinnati chilli has a soupy consistency. To be really authentic serve on a bed of spaghetti pasta,
