Flitton and Greenfield Gala is an annual event to raise funds for good causes of Flitton and Greenfield. This year we are raising funds for a defibrillator outside the village hall. This year’s theme is “National Teddy Bear Day”. The opening of the Gala starts with the Gala Queen's vehicle procession through Greenfield, Flitton and Wardhedges from 12.45pm and the crowning of the Gala Queen in the village hall at 1pm. Activities include Army Cadet Corps of Drums, Ampthill singers, Zumba, Ampthill Town Band, Jazzercise, Stotfold Twirlers, Decorate a teddy biscuit, Bear treasure hunt, Marmalade cake competition, Football tournament, Grand raffle, Stalls, Tug of war and traditional games. 'The Old House'

The Wash House Shed door, flung open, to enjoy a most precious sunny summer's afternoon, The Five Friends enjoying the day, the company of each other, the telling of stories and of course food and drink. The neat and tidy garden of Sam Ilex hummed with bumble bees gathering the nectar from the pea and bean plants, the multitude of cottage flowers, as they visited for the food to make honey, pollen laided legs fertilized the waiting plants. The sunflowers heading skyward first to attract the busy bees, towered above the garden wall.

Sam Ilex grew these every year the dual purpose plant feed the birds in the winter, and provided a backdrop

for the rest of the planting.

At last the Mrs Sam trotted down the brick winding path from the house to The Wash House Shed, carrying a large wooden tray, covered with a cloth, hiding the tray contents. The tray placed on the cricket table, on the newly laid table cloth, which Dapper Charlie, under instructions from The Mrs Sam had placed neatly in place. The large old fashioned jug filled with a cold drink and beside a plate of homemade butterfly cakes.

As The Mrs Sam poured the drink contents for The Five Friends, a memory of long ago she recalled and shared her story. Great Aunt Lizzie had been house bound for many years, this didn't deter her from being active in the village of Houghton Conquest. Making the most delicious homemade lemonade was a pleasure that she so excelled.

However Great Auntie Gertie let slip how the 'receipt' (old word for recipe) was made.

Draw fresh water from the well, or newly installed piped water into a black kettle put on blacklead range to boil.

In the meantime wash fresh lemons dry and thinly slice put in a large jug, an Old one from a Jug and Basin (used for hand washing before indoor bathrooms), add copious quantities of local honey, or to taste.

Add the boiling water to cover the lemons. Cover with muslin cloth, put on pantry slate shelf to cool.

Maybe overnight.

The beauty of this recipe, The Mrs Sam informed The Five Friends, is that it is a summer drink, but is so

good hot in winter when colds and flu etc are about. The honey is such a good natural sweetener, even children like this Great Aunt Lizzie’s Lemonade.

The Old Boys were busy sucking the pieces of lemon, the honey had seeped into the fruit, making a tasty treat.

Who would have thought that a simple lemonade recipe that had probably been The Mrs Sam's Great Grandmothers was still as popular in this modern age. The Five Friends remarked that so often the simple things in life give the greatest pleasure as they munched through the butterfly cakes.

Simple it may be but all agreed the memories are worth more than gold.

Bedfordshire’s first ‘Micro-Museum’ has arrived in Ampthill.

Doors opened to the museum on Aragon Day in celebration of Ampthill’s rich history.

The Micro-Museum will be Bedfordshire’s smallest museum. It is located within the showroom of family-run business Ampthill Fireplaces. The museum documents Ampthill’s history from Norman times to current day. Visitors to the micro-museum will learn about the town’s association with Henry VIII and why Kit Williams chose Ampthill as the hiding place for the treasure of his 1979 book Masquerade.

The development of the museum has been funded by Ampthill Fireplaces. James Gray, 27, Managing Director of Ampthill Fireplaces says: “When we started the showroom renovations, I realised we could do something interesting with the space upstairs.

And then when I spoke to people in the town, a museum seemed like the perfect idea. Ampthill’s a small place but it has a big history.”

“The support we’ve received for our business from the local community has always been overwhelming. This is our way of giving something back.”

Local historian John Heele says, who has curated the museum’s collection says: “We have long wanted to have space in Ampthill to tell the town’s story but had almost given up on the idea for good as it was going to be far too expensive. The generosity of James and the Ampthill Fireplaces team now means we can share Ampthill’s illustrious history with people for the first time.”

Thérèse Gray, Co-Founder of Ampthill Fireplaces says: “I am so pleased to see this project come to fruition. Ampthill is a beautiful market town with a fascinating history and a great place to live and work. I hope this inspires more people to come and visit Ampthill and frequent the locally run shops, restaurants and bars the town has to offer.”

Admission to the museum is free of charge.

CPRE Bedfordshire, a local countryside charity, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. To mark this, the charity is running a photography competition open to all, to build a picture of Bedfordshire’s much-loved countryside and green spaces, and glimpse how these are changing. The theme is: Bedfordshire - A Changing Landscape.

Entrants are encouraged to consider the ways that Bedfordshire’s landscape, countryside and greenspaces can be seen to change, throughout the year and over time, through natural or human factors. We hope people will be inspired by the theme and that we get entries from across Bedfordshire.

Heard on US Flight just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City: The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, ‘That was quite a bump and I know what ya'll are thinking. TOMATOES STUFFED WITH BACON Firstly you will need seven streaky bacon rashers (from the butcher of course) Eight large tomatoes Two small onions finely chopped Roughly two tbs chopped watercress Seven level tbs fresh white breadcrumbs Dash of Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper A cool glass of something to slurp as you are the one locked up in the kitchen doing the cooking!

Now here’s what you do: Preheat oven to about 190 deg C. Then remove rind from bacon and chop finely.

Fry the bacon with the onion until soft.

Cut the tops off the tomatoes and remove insides with a teaspoon, then sieve to a pulp (the tomato insides - not you!).

Season inside of tomatoes and mix together the bacon, onion, watercress, breadcrumbs, seasoning, tomato pulp and Worcestershire sauce. Stuff tomatoes with the mixture, replace tomato caps and pop in the oven in an ovenproof dish for about 25 minutes.

Whilst they cook treat yourself to another slurp.

Chapter 1 The war had been over for nearly four months and it was almost a year to the day since Martha had received the dreaded telegram with the devastating news, ‘missing in action’. Almost overnight her world had become very small and isolated. Things could never be the same again.

However; given a little time she had managed to create for herself a domestic routine out of chaos. There was no reason to suppose that today would be any different. She had planned to do what she always did on warm summer days, take her mid-morning coffee and the newspaper and relax under the shade of the spreading apple tree. This had been a favourite spot for Edward. From here she was in full view of the arbour which he had lovingly constructed, now covered in delicate pink roses giving out the most delicious perfume under the warmth of the sun. Just beyond the arbour was the garden’s boundary wall in Yorkshire stone with a full length solid weathered oak gate leading into a small paddock.

scuppered these and it was very doubtful now that this would ever happen. As a solution, Martha had rented the paddock out to farmer Stevens as it backed onto his small holding and it made excellent grazing for his two rescued pit ponies, Twizel and Brandon. Such gentle creatures whom she enjoyed giving a daily treat of either carrot or apple.

Martha settled down on the comfy sun chair and took a sip of coffee. She looked towards the wall and noticed a large spider crawling out from a deep crevice. It travelled a few inches up the wall and then stopped to bask in the warmth of the late morning sun. She took another sip of coffee and read the headlines from the newspaper, ‘A WARM WELCOME HOME TO MORE OF OUR BRAVE SOLDIERS.’ As she put the paper down on her lap she felt a mixture of pleasure for those lucky families involved yet pain for herself. ‘If only one of those could have been Edward’ she thought.

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier:

I mentioned in the June Fuddler that I had read a book by Anne Cholawn who used to live just 1/2 mile from me in Fuddlerland but I don’t think we ever met. She now lives on the most remote inhabited island in the UK with her new husband and they are apparently the only people who live there. The post comes by boat on a Friday and as there is no pier they have to go out in a rubber dinghy a hundred yards to meet it. Sometimes when the sea is rough they don’t get any mail for 5 weeks. They never leave the island together even for weddings or funerals in case they can’t get back as there would be no-one to feed the animals. The sea crossing is 4 miles then the trip to the shop is 14 miles: a long way to get your bread or milk etc. A total return trip of 36 miles to buy anything. I hoped to get to the island in May but it was too rough for a boat so I hope to try again in August. Wish me luck.

Whilst back from my holiday I was telling a friend that I’d had a trip in a 1924 Model T Ford with a starting handle. He sais that when he was about four his father had a car with a starting handle which was very long and he had to crawl under the bumper to make sure it went into the hole.

I saw a list of notes left for the milkman and the funniest one was : ‘Please shut the gate when you go as the birds come in and peck the milk.’

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 5) The Wyoming 'Everlasting' Sheepherder Chilli By the time I visited Wyoming for the first time, my chilli experiences in the U.S. were being recorded in my journal. I had been visiting friends in Denver and we were off to a conference in Laramie. We had driven north from Colorado and were heading for the city of Cheyenne, the state capital. The state is the tenth largest by area, and the least populated in North America. The western twothirds of the state is covered by mountain ranges of the Rockies, while the eastern third is high elevation prairie land, called the High Plains. For our evening we ended up in an old frontier style saloon restaurant. I scanned the menu for a local or regional chilli recipe and on spotting the 'Wyoming Sheepherder Chilli', I promptly opted for that. "So you like chillies do you?", one of my party asked. "I...do" I replied so mewhat cautiously, especially after my experience in South Carolina. "Why's that?" I enquired, "No reason" my colleague answered, with a grin. We ordered the meal and got our drinks and chatted. Some starters had been ordered and a plate of something that looked like giant deep fried scampi turned up. "What are these"

I asked the party around the table, "There're Rocky Mountain Oysters" one of them offered, "A local delicacy". Now, on my travels around France especially, I have become quite used to the term 'local delicacy' being normally associated with animal body parts that I am not usually accustomed to eating, these were no different, as they were deep fried in jalapeño skins and spices ... they were however, delicious. As for the chilli, that was darn good too. It was pretty similar to other ground beef recipes, with onions, chopped tomatoes, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, oregano, vinegar, t o m a t o s a u c e , Worcestershire sauce, but did have the award winning Chugwater chilli powder mix. It is also unique in that the batch of chilli is started off on a Sunday afternoon and continues to simmer away all through the week, ingredients added when required and re-cooked overnight. Locals say that the chilli comes into its own around a Wednesday or Thursday; the day I sampled mine. You could say it was the 'Everlasting of Wyoming'. It is usually served in a bowl with cornbread. I gave it 3.5 red chilli stars on my rating system, perhaps a little harshly. to be continued...
