07775 622113 Little Brickhill Open Gardens event will be on the weekend of the 8th and 9th July from 2.00pm until 6.00pm.

There will at least 8 gardens open with delicious cream teas and homemade cakes available in the village hall as well as plants and handicrafts for sale. The beautiful Norman church will be open and all proceeds will go for the upkeep of this building. The miniature railway will also be all steamed up and ready for rides for children and adults and also a quiz for the children. Maps available in the village hall and cost is £5.00. For further information see www.opengardens.co.uk July 29th sees the Aragon Day Tudor Fair which is to be held at The Old Sun in Dunstable Street Ampthill.

The event begins with a procession starting from St Andrew’s Church which will proceed along Church Street, through the car park, crossing on the zebra crossing and is due to arrive at The Old Sun at about 11.25.

The procession is to be headed up by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire preceded by his sword bearer. The Tudor Fair includes many enactors of the period including birds of prey, Tudor dancers, storytelling for the children, a bowman, dissident priest and many more.

There is to be a Country Show and Rally on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July at Old Farm, Clophill Road, Maulden, Beds MK45 2AA. 'The Old House'

The Five Old Friends sat in the Wash House Shed reflecting on their own Sunday morning routine, church of course, many had either been in the choir or rang the bells. Lovely sound of the church bells ringing across the countryside, no one should have been late, even if you had put the milk cows back in the sweet grass meadows to graze the day away until the evening milking. Just time to take off your overalls covering the Sunday Best suit, and replace Wellingtons to Sunday Best, highly polished shoes or boots.

Rabbit Bob changed his churches, so had sung in many choirs, always enjoying a good sing song, he told the others. The Mrs Sam giggled to herself just hoping Sam wouldn't join in, if a sing-a-long accrued, as she enlightened the others that Sam was embarrassingly so tone deaf.

The Mrs Sam said she belonged to the church choir, and loved the music, and

listening to the thundering organ filling the church with sound and life.

Years ago most churches had a band, made up from the congregation.

Learning an instrument, from older band members who willingly passed on their knowledge. Of course The Mrs Sam informed the others that her Great Aunt Lizzie had talked of how her cousins had formed The Gadsden Band when she was young and are still going strong, Bedfordshire born and bred will know that the family are in most of the villages round and about Fuddlerland. Mind you when organs were introduced into churches, only needing one organist and one to pump the bellows for the pipes, some bands were left without the few pennies pay so went on strike. Obviously hoping the rectors would give in, the players were after all part of the congregation.

They never had their Sunday jobs back the organ now still installed. Mind you, The Mrs Sam informed the Five Friends there is getting a shortage of organists (seems the band members might be getting their way).

Lovely. Things do go backwards sometimes! Have remembered that my Grandfather earned a penny pumping the bellows, he attended lots of services on a Sunday, reflected The Mrs Sam. He was an avid chorister all his life, so he and Grandma would pop over Sunday afternoon, depending on the weather by bus in the winter, can remember walking to the bus stop to see them off (they only lived up Ampthill) or by ' sit up and beg ' bikes. How they biked down Ampthill Hill, dread to think. Isn't until you are older you see danger, they obviously didn't! On one occasion biking down Ampthill Hill, a tortoise ambled across the road, he picked it up, popped it in his leather shopping bag, then into Grandma's bicycle basket for the journey to Houghton Conquest where it joined our family. So if you lost it in the 50's, it had a long and happy life.

We didn't call it the apt names Ampthill or Hilly!!

Grandad, a fantastic carpenter, made

toys for his grandchildren and great grandchildren for Christmas or birthday wrapped in brown paper and tied with string!

Grandad wrote poetry all his life, had notebooks full of his words, his pleasure in reading to us his latest poem at the time, lost to me. Wish could turn the clock back, would appreciate listening now, mulled The Mrs Sam. Must tell you a story, and show you this picture, as you can see Grandad had lost his hair, as do many family members in their twenties, now this one a full head of hair. As Grandad, being of a serious nature, and being only little, looking at him, with this full head of hair, hadn't the nerve to comment, we didn't ever say anything, ever.

Not so his brothers and sisters who would never let him forget. He became Grandad when he visited with no hair.

Wonder if he got his money back, and where (the wig) did he get it from!

To mark this, the charity is running a photography competition open to all, to build a picture of Bedfordshire’s much-loved countryside and green spaces, and glimpse how these are changing. Entrants are encouraged to consider the ways that Bedfordshire’s landscape, countryside and greenspaces can be seen to change, throughout the year and over time, through natural or human factors. We hope people will be inspired by the theme and that we get entries from across Bedfordshire.

On a June evening the Followers of Bedford Blues began their AGM by presenting a cheque for a whopping £1000 to The Jigsaw Club from Ampthill.

The Jigsaw Club have been one of the Followers charities during the previous season.

The Jigsaw Club is for people with physical disabilities living in Ampthill and the surrounding villages. Members are taken to the meeting and home again in wheelchair accessible mini-buses.

Due to its popularity and increasing membership a third vehicle has been purchased with the financial support from local groups and donors.

The donation from the Bedford Blues Followers will contribute to the upkeep and running of the vehicles.

The Jigsaw Club meets once a fortnight in the Social Club in Ampthill and anyone interested in joining or helping should contact Jan on 07940 218634.

Through its varied programme of demonstrations, workshops, "painting together" days, and exhibitions, Mid Beds Art Society supports, encourages, develops and promotes the work of local amateur artists. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in art and visitors are welcomed at the monthly demo and workshop sessions held in Barton-le-Clay.

Twenty years down the line we are being subjected again to endless writings about Princess Diana; as if raking up the dirt is an acceptable way to remember the anniversary

of her death this coming August. Now nearing her 70th birthday in July, Camilla is also being guillotined. For goodness sake. Come on editors show a little respect. Whatever our individual personal thoughts are on the matter, let’s move on. I suppose the media must be thirsty for all this dirt digging or the newspapers would not be bought and read and the editors would risk the dole queues! What a shame!

A golfer who really was pretty terrible at the game decided to hire a caddie for his afternoon's heinous attempts at the game. The round proved somewhat tortuous for the caddie to watch and he was getting a bit exasperated by the poor play of his employer. At one point the golfer’s ball lay about 170 yards from the green and as the golfer sized up the situation, he turned to the caddie and asked: ‘Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?’ To which the caddie replied, ‘Eventually’

This month, we bring you a recipe for a dish that goes incredibly well with pork chops and green salad, that one of our readers has very kindly sent to us:

POTATO MUSHROOM PIE You will need: 3/4 kg potatoes, cooked and sliced 1 thinly sliced onion 100 gm cheese, sliced 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 6 - 8 tbps cream Salt & pepper Chopped parsley And of course wine for slurpage purposes!

Whizz the oven on to about 200c., then chuck the potatoes, onion and cheese in layers in an ovenproof dish but leave some potato for the final layer.

(Slurp some wine!)

Mix the soup & cream and pour over.

Cover with final layer of spuds and season to taste.

Bake in the centre of your oven until potato is cooked.

(And, of course, whilst this is happening you could sneak a little more slurpage!)

Them sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with the meat dish you have chosen!

If a therapist tries to tackle a person’s solution (all be it an unhelpful one) head on they are more than anything likely to create a panic response. This is because while the “solution” is not working it is all the client has. This is sometimes called secondary gain. Before anything the innate needs of the client must be explored and met: once this is done the client will become ready to let go of the difficulty causing “solution” and move on.

The Final Chapter.

It was early evening when the Lady walked into the Swan Inn. This was her favourite of all the Inns that she had visited over the centuries and the one in which she felt the most comfortable. As she walked across to the little table by the fireplace the landlord felt he had seen her before but he could not remember when. She was he felt rather overdressed in her beautiful long white dress. Within a few minutes a tall, distinguished and immaculately dressed gentleman walked in and as he passed the bar he raised his top hat to the landlord. ..... All rather eccentric thought the landlord. The gentleman joined the Lady, placed his top hat on the table and sat down opposite her.

“Thank you Professor Time for agreeing to see me’” she said.

“My pleasure my Lady but what is it that I can do for you?”

“I want to go home Professor ....back to my own century. I am weary now and I feel that I have wandered long enough through time.... I have worked so hard to right my wrongs”.

“Umm,” replied the Professor. “How do you feel you have achieved this?” he asked.

“By helping others in distress” “I see”........have you the little leather book with all your ventures recorded?”

The Lady took the little book from her pocket and handed it to the Professor. He spent several minutes studying it and was satisfied.

“You realise that I can only grant you this one request and you must go before a higher judge for the final decision. It may be refused and you cannot come to me for help a second time”, I appreciate that Professor but I feel I am ready now and it is to you that I must come first as only you can send me on my way to that higher judge” The Professor rose from the table and replaced his top hat.

“Put your little book back in your pocket my Lady and keep it safe.....you will need it again and follow me” Professor Time and the Lady passed the landlord as he was still polishing glasses behind the bar.

He watched them as they made for the door. They did not get that far before they simply vanished into the mists of time itself.

I find that I am now 9 years older than where my Father got to.

The most sheep I’d ever seen in my life were in a field behind Ridgmont Church.

Our Milky Way contains 400 billion stars. The next galaxy Andromeda contains 1 trillion stars. That’s a lot of stars. Did someone count them or is it a guess?

I came across a tree in Scotland and from a few feet away you would say it was a Hawthorn but on closer look the leaves were smaller and the trunk different. I later found out that is was a Southern Beech - ‘Nothofagus’. I’d never seen one before and they are normally found in Borneo, Australia and New Zealand.

A friend in Fuddlerland was asked if he would deliver the local Sunday papers for 2 weeks. He did and eventually did it for just over 20 years.

I think I might sell my vacuum cleaner as it’s only gathering dust.

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 4) Eastern Kansas Black Bean Chilli Tracy Spoon RIP Back in 2002 I visited North America for the first time. I was working for the British Museum at the time and I was in Kansas City, Missouri installing an exhibition. I met a young lady there called Tracy, she was a marine biologist, and we became very close.

Unfortunately whilst carrying out research off the coast of Alaska she was involved in a fatal accident.

Whilst I was going through my journal of different chilli recipes I encountered in North America, I came across her photo and a hand -written recipe which I had the pleasure of experiencing with her and her family.

One weekend she invited me to go and meet her folks.

They lived over the state line in Kansas, in a small town near Lawrence. Her mother cooked some damn fine home cooking, and her father had some damn fine liqueur too, I was drinking for the one and only occasion, Riegers Kansas City Whiskey, and very good it was too. The thing was, Tracy was a vegetarian, something that is not unusual in the big cities in the U.S., but in these small Middle

American towns, was quite rare. Well, for one of the dishes we had, her mother cooked us all a traditional East Kansas chilli recipe.

This was apparently a very popular dish during and just after the Dust Bowl that hit the area between 1935 and 1938. The Dust Bowl severely affected the local ecology and agriculture, and was one of factors in the cause of the Great Depression that affected the entire continent. Tracy's grandparents were farmer's, just like her mother and father were, and meat was scarce. This recipe had been in the family since those times, and was a popular meal when Tracy went home. The ingredients included black beans, refried black beans, fire roasted diced tomatoes, green chillies, cumin, and some salsa. Mix all ingredients into a large pot, bring to the boil and simmer gently for an hour or so.

Keep warm until ready to serve. The dish I had was garnished with fresh avocado slices, sour cream, with grated cheese on top, and was served with chips (That's plain crisps). I dedicate this column to Tracy Spoon. to be continued...
