07775 622113 There’s family fun on hand at The Flying Horse pub in Clophill on Saturday the 27th May and Sunday 28th May. The event is a charity do in support of East African Orphanages and will feature a host of attractions including live music, bouncy castle, garden games, pony rides, a raffle and a gin tent. Tanqueray gin are sponsoring the event which takes place from 12.00 noon until late on both days.

The delightful Millbrook Church Fete is to be held on Sunday 11th June this year, at Millbrook Village Hall and Playing Field. The event is from 12.30pm to 4.00pm and will feature a BBQ, delicious cream teas, real ales and Pimms will also be served.

In addition there is to be a display of vintage motorbikes, traditional games, side stalls and face painting.

All profits from the day go to St Michael and All Angels Church, Millbrook.

This year’s famous Ampthill 3 legged charity race is to take place on Saturday the 27th May with registration for the event from 11.30 at The Engine & Tender. See also page 14.

Bradnam Guttering This year we are celebrating our 70th anniversary and our spring concert will revisit some of the music we have done in previous years. It will include the Faure Requiem, some choruses from Messiah, The Cantique de Jean Racine and Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus. All very popular works. Small Business. Big Customer Service Stuart Brown Landscape & Arborist Supplies is celebrating 25 years of trading in Maulden. The family run business was started by Stuart in 1992 in a room measuring just 600sq ft. Initially the business focussed on the tree industry, specialising in chainsaw sales and service and arboricultural equipment, only later branching out into the lawnmowers and garden machinery which it’s so well known for today.

Long days and hard work saw the business expand and thrive, and more space was needed offering potential to grow. In 2000 the business moved to its current location at Blackmoor Farm, New Road. The move made it possible to cope with the growing tide of repair work, sales of new lawnmowers as well as the tree and landscaping equipment.

By 2003 Stuart Brown incorporated becoming Stuart Brown Ltd and was now an authorised Stihl/Viking and Husqvarna Dealer with two full time members of staff. The business was going from strength to strength, taking on dealerships for Timberwolf Wood Chippers, Hayter and Toro Lawnmowers in an effort to offer its loyal customers more choice combined with real personal service. Reviewing customers’ requirements is always a priority, as well as offering suggestions, providing a collection and delivery service, and giving help and guidance where necessary.

More recently the business invested in a ‘make over’ completely revamping the interior. There are now six employees with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. The commitment to staff training brings dividends and means that a first class service with great technical advice is always available.

The world is a fast changing place and the internet continues to be a challenge. But great training combined with personal service enable Stuart Brown Ltd to deal with the requirements of an ever changing industry. New Robotic Lawnmowers and Cordless Battery technology is fast becoming the norm. They may be 21st century products, but our good “old fashioned” service remains the same. 'The Old House'

In most villages, Sunday became the quietest day of the week, no work for those who's work didn't entail working on the land that is, no school, just Sunday School at church or chapel, and at least two visits to your place of faith, to listen to the rector's, (which seemed never ending) sermon. At least, it was a day of rest, nowadays Sunday has become like any other day of the week.

However, as The Mrs Sam reflecting with The Five Old Friends, began to tell of Sundays, in The Old House. As you all know, Mum kept me busy, what with church then up the farm lane to collect the farmers week's washing, then taking Sunday Lunch to two old friends, of Great Uncle Tommy and Herbert.

While this was going on Mum hadn't stopped either! After Sunday's cooked breakfast things had been washed up, put away on the wooden dresser, beside

the old black lead range, ready for the next meal, Sunday Lunch needed to be prepared. Dad had long since come back from the allotment with his wooden wheelbarrow filled with home grown fruit and vegetables. (That also shifted tons and tons of horse manure across the allotment) It meant that vegetables that were in season were eaten in season!

No methods available to keep food frozen, no freezer, no electricity either!

The only way to preserve food was as jam or by pickling, some people did still salt meat or vegetables. Do you know, The Mrs Sam turned to The Old Boys, with a very reflective smile on her face, the most wonderful memory I have is walking up that country lane, along side Dad, very proudly pushing a small version of Dad's wooden wheelbarrow.

How Mum had managed to get the wood for my Grandfather to make it, I shall never know; it was a faithful copy of what had been, my Great Grandfathers! Wonder how many times it had made that journey up the lane or indeed how much work it had done.

While Great Aunt Lizzie prepared the vegs at the table, Mum had already put the joint of meat in the black lead range, having baked the small cakes already made pastry for a fruit pie for lunch, this being dependent on the available fruit, rich mauve damsons, apples, gorgeous gooseberries, picked from the front garden bush, (my job, one for the basket, one for me!) The sweetest rhubarb, picked from the allotment, (with added preserved ginger and a splash of rose hip syrup) and perhaps nature's bounty, the juiciest blackberries, picked up the fields. Yorkshire pudding to be made if the joint was beef, horse radish too, the rich gravy prepared, if pork apple sauce, lamb, mint of course picked from the garden. chicken only served at Christmas.

The peas now podded, transferred to a colander, to steam above the potatoes, carrots sliced, differently as the season

went on. Boys do you remember pulling sweet carrots out of the earth, a quick wipe and munch away. A lot of nodding heads in agreement. Sam Ilex told of loving green peas, picked them from the stalk, podded them, enjoying every single pea, then spending the next few minutes with itchy ears. Something to do with nose, throat, and ear tubes!!

The morning work continued, jellies to be made, might be set by Monday, pink blancmange in the fancy Victorian dish.

A fruit cake made and left to stand, until after the roast dinner came out of the black lead range.

Now all to be done, the plating up, the juicy meat, the tender homegrown vegs, the crispy roast potatoes the Yorkshire pudding, and the waiting gravy boat the steaming liquid ready to be poured.

All this talk of food is making you Old Boys hungry, I'd better get you all something to eat, said The Mrs Sam, lifting the latch on the Wash House Shed, be back in a minute!!

Babs was very excited about her trip away with some friends for a weekend.

She duly packed her case and was collected by her friends to go off to their hotel. They all checked in and agreed to meet for breakfast the following day. Next morning as the friends gathered in the dining room there wasn’t a sign of Babs. One of the friends rang her room to see what the problem was and was told by a tearful Babs that she couldn’t get out of her room.

‘Why not?’ asked the friend.

The Ampthill 3-legged race is looming up again and will be held on May 27th.

Last year’s race was highly successful, in so many ways, not least being that we had a great day with loads of laughs and a fantastically high attendance. Most importantly, over £5.5k was raised for charity.

The great thing about money raised at the 3-legged race, is that it goes directly to individuals or communities in need. The principle is that we make a big difference to individuals, such as 3-year old Robbie, as pictured.

We gave the money to buy him a specially adapted disability trike, to help build his core strength, which will help him walk and in addition, provided the money to buy a special chair, which will assist him.

The charity also raises money for a community in The Gambia, helping with medical and educational needs and has recently put a young man called, Musa, through an intensive driving test, which will enable him to find employment and help him support his own community.

Look out for the posters, in local Pubs, which will be going up shortly, to promote the race.

We hope to see you there and thank you for all your support in the past!

HUMAN GIVENS ‘A NEW APROACH’ Ben Keenan

The world of counselling/psychotherapy is a very different place to what it was even ten years ago! These are difficult and sometimes dangerous emotions.

For the majority of people they are not biological illnesses but complex arousals that can arise from our spectrum of thought and emotion. These conditions arise as a result of circumstances preventing our innate needs being met. This gives access to fast, safe, non invasive, and drug free methods of effective treatment in as few sessions as possible, often in weeks not years!

Having had 27 years’ experience of offering emotional support in the voluntary sector, I retrained in the Human Givens approach. Achieving a distinction in the Level 2 Diploma in March 2015 allowed me to start accepting clients. Now operating as an HG.DIP.P Trainee (with supervision) as I work towards a higher level of accreditation. I also carry comprehensive professional insurance.

Human Givens means it no longer has to be this way for a great many people.

Therapy thoughts.

The complexities of our Brain are infinite but to think of our brain as one thing in our skull is as daft as saying our heart, liver and lungs are one thing in our upper body. The Brain is made up of interacting parts. Our neocortex is the part where our best creative thinking comes from, it is however too slow to look after us. The limbic system deals with our fight flight response. It can be super fast as needed but it can only deal in black and white thinking and is therefore essentially stupid. It can snatch control of our thinking in 0.01 seconds. The madness of man as it were is that we are inclined to protect our highest achievement with the most stupid part of our brain (a caution to our political elite if ever there was one).

Depression and Anxiety are difficult and sometimes dangerous emotions but they are probably best described as painful trance states we have slipped into. They often arise because they are the only solution our imagination has been able to find. When a therapist tackles these symptoms they risk triggering the fight flight response and thereby shutting down the part of the brain that can accept help. Human Givens training avoids this trap.

CPRE Bedfordshire (Campaign to Protect Rural England), a local countryside charity, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. To mark this, the charity is running a photography competition open to all, to build a picture of Bedfordshire’s much-loved countryside and green spaces, and glimpse how these are changing. The theme is: Bedfordshire - A Changing Landscape.

Entrants are encouraged to consider the ways that Bedfordshire’s landscape, countryside and green spaces can be seen to change, throughout the year and over time, through natural or human factors.

We hope people will be inspired by the theme and that we get entries from across Bedfordshire.

ART FOR ALL The 9th Mentmore Arts Festival will be held from Saturday 27th to Monday 29th May 2017 from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.

We are delighted that our favourite artists continue to support the event and are also very happy to make new artists a welcome addition to the team. We now showcase the work of over 60 contributors, twice the number from our opening year.

This, together with record numbers of visitors, has meant that we have been able to donate to charity the fantastic sum of £9,000 in 2016 and over £50,000 in total from eight events.

The lead charity for 2017 will be our local Air Ambulance.

The weekend is an opportunity to have a family day out with our refreshment tent offering light lunches, teas, coffee and a bar including Pimms and local beer. We also have a raffle with some great prizes.

SAUSAGES WITH ‘SAUCY’ MUSHROOMS Firstly, to cook for four people, pop in to your butcher and buy 8 pork sausages.

Then you will need: 1 Large onion to peel and chop up 50 gm butter 200 gm mushrooms to slice 1 tsp of mixed dried herbs 1 tsp sugar About 25 gm long grain rice Pepper and salt 125 ml soured cream

And of course a little glass of wine to slurp whilst cooking!

Grill the sausages till golden brown and keep warm. (the sausages that is - not you!)

Then fry the chopped onion in butter for about 5 minutes.

Add the sliced mushrooms, onion, herbs, sugar, rice, salt & pepper.

Simmer gently for about 10 minutes or so then stir in the soured cream.

Arrange your sausages in a shallow serving dish and pour the sauce over the top.

Serve immediately and enjoy

He was so ugly that the demons themselves would have had to question the existence of a benign deity.

He stood transfixed, almost as if he had seen a supernatural being, when in fact he had merely observed the membership of the assembled company in the depths of their self created silliness. After a moment or two, as the shadows created by movements within the tavern seemed to extend themselves about him and hover about his very soul, he took half a pace toward the mayhem he had thus far been too afraid to be part of less he would be inextricably drawn into a web of confusion from which there could be no escape. Still struck dumb, a stranger relieved the man’s ineptitude at opening a conversation by uttering the simple greeting ‘Hello. Can we help you?’

Possibly expecting vituperative utterances and standing as if one foot had been inexplicably nailed to the creaking timbers of the ancient floors, he muttered unintelligib ly, clearly seeking to vocalise his onward goal for reception of the documents he clutched so carefully to his breast.

Finally, he was able to communicate his wishes to fulfil his contractual obligations, having accepted responsibility for the documents in the first instance. Directing the man toward the conclusion of his delivering agenda, one of the group described the location of his final destination.

Muttering expletives, he turned on his heel, perhaps fearful that such demons that he had imagined he had observed within the establishment would plunder his precious cargo, and fled.

“Simkins”, he replied, “nice to see you again, I am leading the escort party of her most gracious majesty Queen Eleanor back to London on orders of the King” “Would you be requiring rooms for the night, Sir Percy?”

“Thank you Simkins that won’t be necessary, we are on our way to the Abbey. The Monks are expecting us. But, I had to stop off here to meet young Winsmore “, touching his companion on the shoulder,” as he must return to London with haste and bring back the Royal Drape for the coffin” Simkins looked out of the dirty window and noticed the coffin guarded by men from the King’s troops draped in a simple plain mauve cloth. So too did a certain lady, who as she brushed against Simkins, although not seen made him shiver “Someone has walked over my grave”, he remarked.

“Sir Percy smiled thinking it was simply because Simkins had witnessed the sad scene.

Sir Percy explained that the Royal Drape had been stolen at the last resting place at Stony Stratford after it had been removed to clean it from mud splashes but it was never returned. Sir Percy had to purchase the mauve cloth from the local drapers. With strict instructions from Sir Percy to return within two days, Winsmore duly mounted his horse and headed for London. Sir Percy and the escort party continued to the Abbey.

On the second morning there was still no sign of the Royal Drape but the party needed to make its way to keep on schedule. It stopped off once more at the Inn. “I see you have not managed to have the Royal Drape sent from London, Sir Percy” “No, but we must move on and hope it reaches us before our entry into London” After a social tankard of ale, Simkins walked with Sir Percy to the door. There in front of them was the coffin draped in the Royal Drape but no one knew from where it came and by whom.

It was about an hour after Sir Percy had departed the Inn that galloping hooves were heard on the cobbles stopping suddenly at the Inn. A messenger from London stumbled breathless into the Inn. “Landlord, please” he gasped.

“Landlord here sir, what can I do to help?”

If you saw the film Allied with Brad Pitt driving a khaki coloured Humber car you will be pleased to know that the car is back in Fuddlerland where it’s been garaged for 30 years.

I went into a neighbour’s house for a visit. I said ‘What a high ceiling you’ve got.’ She said ‘It was my husband’s idea he wanted to male two rooms into one.

The dawn chorus here over the last 3 weeks from 5.30 onwards is beautiful. There’s only about half a dozen birds but they are a delight to listen to. To hear a terrific dawn chorus you would have to go back to around the 1960s as birds have now disappeared by the millions.

The Only place in Scotland where you can spell the place name backwards as well as forwards is Glenelg.

I always use a fountain pen for writing letters. I eventually located some blotting paper in Great Missenden, Bucks.

My brother has a pair of robins in his garden and if he opens the door to the garden the male robin will fly in and sit by him on the back of a chair or on the table and will stay for ages. If later he goes into his workshop the robin will fly in and sit on the bench vice or bench and again stay with him whilst he’s working. I used to have a very friendly male swan. (More about him soon.)

If someone rings my front door bell and I’m sitting in my living room it is a 100 yard walk to get to the door. If I don’t hurry the visitor could be gone.

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 2) Arizona Roadhouse Chilli - Tucson, Arizona Last month I told you about my Chilli experience in a local Mexican restaurant in Denver, Colorado and the Chilli Colorado recipe. Well this month I will retell the time I visited an old archaeological digging chum from the UK who now lives in Tucson, Arizona with his wife Jodie from West Virginia. One evening after a few beers with my buddy Paul, we set off in search of supper. We came across a Mexican restaurant adorned with the green, white, and red of the Mexican flag, lots of plastic red and green chilli peppers and Mexican music playing in the background. One of the items on the menu was for a bowl of Arizona Roadhouse Chilli, saying "the best thick hearty chilli you'll ever have". It also came with a warning to easterners who were unused to fiery western foods and should be wary of the amount of green chillies and hot sauce. Well, this came as a red flag to a bull, and I was all for ordering one extra hot, before my pal reiterated the warning and said be careful, they mean it. I played safe, and ordered it "as it comes" and looking back in my journal the entry was very telling... written in green pen, without spoiling future

tales, this was one of the highest marks I gave in my journal. There were three varieties of green chilli in this recipe, which I discovered had been in the chef's menu for over 25 years. I got the recipe from chef, as I was as much impressed by it living up to its inciting warning, as I was with the dish itself.

Soak some pinto beans in a covered container overnight. Cook the minced beef until evenly browned, drain and discard the residue. Add the drained pinto beans to the pan with the beef, add some chopped onion, celery, carrot, garlic, red bell pepper, diced tomatoes, guajillo chilli powder, cumin, oregano, cinnamon, hot pepper sauce, and the three green chillies; jalapeno, Anaheim, and poblano, and beef or vegetable stock. Reduce heat and cook at a simmer for about 3 hours. Stir some beef granules or a stock cube into the chilli and continue simmering until beans are tender and start to disintegrate for another 1 to 3 hours, adding water as needed to keep beans and vegetables immersed in liquid. Thicken the chilli with masa harina (gluten free flour) if you prefer a thicker texture. Again this dish does not include rice, and can be eaten with cornbread or crackers. to be continued...
