'The Old House'

Everyone sees their past in a different way to ones who were there at the same time witnessed the same events, everyone has a memory that belongs to them. That is why a group of people at the scene of say an accident make the worst witnesses.

Just as The Old House has always held a soft spot in my heart, perhaps my Mother at the age of fifteen who left her parents and younger brother to take care of three sick relatives, would have seen life and that old cottage in a so different light.

The Five Old Friends as they sat enjoying the homemade cowslip wine, served in tiny Victorian glasses, cosy in The Wash House Shed, mulled over if life was so much a contrast to how everyone else was living at the time. Ten Acre

lived all his life in and around the land, he told the others of having to rise from his feather bed before it became light, to have porridge left warming on the range overnight, a hot cup of sweet tea, his packed lunch made the night before collected from the pantry, his pint sized churn filled with sweet tea for later on in the day. Then made the way down the black lanes, guided by the stars and moonlight. Across fields and ditches to pitch black farm buildings, inside waiting to be fed and watered the heavy horses, their breath now visible in the cold air, as the lamps were lit and warmed the stables. Then off to do a day's work walking behind the plough pulled by that faithful heavy horse. The most endearing memory, Ten Acre smiling as he recalled at the age of eight being able to lead the heavy horse back home, even allowed to sit bareback on the trek home from harvesting as the summer sun slipped below the horizon. Of course the day not over yet, the heavy

Mind you, Ten Acre reminded The Old Boys, best bit was if we could walk through The Dewpond on the horse, by the time we got back the horse was dry! Mind you I wasn't keen to get wet, unlike the older men who wore leather spats to keep their trousers dry, and free from rat bites, being too young for them (spats that is)!

The Mrs Sam thought that Ten Acre, although small in stature, was strong and fit for his age, must have been all his Mother's Bedfordshire Clangers and hot sweet tea. My Mother was a tiny built person too but had a will to do her best, and make the best of everything, if that meant caring for others, so be it! Maybe that's why I feel towards The Old House a great sense of Loyalty and affection, the people that lived there and the people that visited.

Maybe that is why my Mother never

sat down, that is only to eat, being young to prove she could manage.

Manage she did. How during WW2 not only did her work entail looking after the three invalid, but as three evacuees came too, and myself, not only all of these but two Old Friends of her Uncle Tommy and Herbert she cooked them a dinner for donkeys years. During the week they came round but on a Sunday, from a very young age my job was to take a meal down to them. Having already gone to church, changed from best clothes to everyday ones walk up the wild flower and tree lined farm lane to get the farmers week's washing. He always had loads of books brought from Peacock's Saturday Auction in Horne Lane near the Bedford Cattle Market, for me to choose and peppermint sweets for Great Aunt Lizzie. Well worth the walk, and he loved to have someone new for his humorous tales that he heard at Bedford Cattle Market on the Saturday.

Therapy thoughts.

For a long time it was believed that it was our thinking that lead to our emotions. Thereby the belief persisted that it was incorrect thinking that lead us into emotional difficulties.

Modern Neurological science however demonstrates that our emotions emanate from a more primitive part of the brain that deals with our fight flight response. This means that as information is gathered through our senses it passes though this part of the brain first as it is pattern matched to our memory templates and this is then followed by our thoughts.

Look at what needs deficit is causing the emotional arousal first because trying to address thoughts as a standalone risks creating further emotional arousal.

GET READY! Charity Karaoke Saturday 17th June

The Ampthill 3-legged race is looming up again and will be held on May 27th.

Last year’s race was highly successful, in so many ways, not least being that we had a great day with loads of laughs and a fantastically high attendance. Most importantly, over £5.5k was raised for charity.

The great thing about money raised at the 3-legged race, is that it goes directly to individuals or communities in need. The principle is that we make a big difference to individuals, such as 3-year old Robbie, as pictured.

We gave the money to buy him a specially adapted disability trike, to help build his core strength, which will help him walk and in addition, provided the money to buy a special chair, which will assist him.

The charity also raises money for a community in The Gambia, helping with medical and educational needs and has recently put a young man called, Musa, through an intensive driving test, which will enable him to find employment and help him support his own community.

Look out for the posters, in local Pubs, which will be going up shortly, to promote the race.

We hope to see you there and thank you for all your support in the past!

The 9th Mentmore Arts Festival will be held from Saturday 27th to Monday 29th May 2017 from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.

We are delighted that our favourite artists continue to support the event and are also very happy to make new artists a welcome addition to the team. We now showcase the work of over 60 contributors, twice the number from our opening year.

This, together with record numbers of visitors, has meant that we have been able to donate to charity the fantastic sum of £9,000 in 2016 and over £50,000 in total from eight events. The lead charity for 2017 will be our local Air Ambulance.

The weekend is an opportunity to have a family day out with our refreshment tent offering light lunches, teas, coffee and a bar including Pimms and local beer. We also have a raffle with some great prizes.

Many thanks to all those who make this such a popular event, including our exhibitors, all our visitors (some from as far afield as Wales!) and everyone who supports the Committee over the weekend.

You will need: A can/packet of sponge pudding About 1/2 litre of thick custard 12 gm grated chocolate 1 medium can of apricots 2 tablespoons of sherry A glass to pour yourself a little sherry in!

Firstly pop the oven on to heat to about 180° C. Slice up the sponge pudding and arrange around the bottom of an ovenproof dish.

Drain the apricots and pour the syrup and sherry over the pudding.

Sneak a crafty slurp of sherry!

Put the apricots on top of the pudding but save a few for decoration.

Cover with foil and bake in the centre of the oven for about 45 minutes.

Remove from oven and then pour the thick custard over the top and when a skin has formed arrange the apricots you have saved on the top.

Finally sprinkle the grated chocolate over the top and pop back into the oven so that the chocolate melts.

Although the Morritt Arms was full to bursting that evening, the chair by the welcoming fire, rocking gentle to and fro, strangely remained empty. At a nearby table two distinguished gentlemen were in deep conversation.

“Browne” said Dickens, “I have asked you here this evening because you have been recommended as an illustrator and I need you to sketch for me a character for my new book.

He must be a round faced, clean shaven portly gentleman wearing spectacles. I have of a mind for you to sketch this character comically by exaggerating his physical features” “And the name of this character?” enquired Browne.

Dickens hesitated for a moment before answering....

“Samuel Pickwick Esquire ... yes ... Samuel Pickwick will do most nicely” Dickens gave a satisfied smile as he continued, “He will be the President of the Pickwick Club and there will be other interesting Pickwickian characters” “Do you want sketches of them as well Mr Dickens?”

“No, no... Not at present....that will come later when I see how you fair with Samuel Pickwick Esquire.

“When would you like this sketch?

“Why, by the morning breakfast Browne .... That is why I have invited you here to stay the night. I need to see your work to make a decision.”

“I see....then I had better go to my room and get started” “No haste Browne, surely a man of your talents, could have a drink or two first...may help with the imaginations?”

So it was that several hours later Browne found himself leaving the comfort of the lounge bar and heading for his room. At the same time the rocking chair by the fire, still empty was stilled.

Once in his room Browne found it difficult to concentrate and the sketching of the character Samuel Pickwick became more than a challenge, definitely an impossibility. He shivered as he felt a cold breeze move through his room.

He wrapped a blanket around his shoulders but then he fell asleep so he did not see the form of a character take shape on his sketch pad........

He woke with a start only to notice by his watch that it was the breakfast hour and Dickens would be waiting for him.

He looked down at his sketch pad expecting to see an empty page and wondering how he could explain that.

Instead, there was the most delightful sketch, with the physical features exaggerated to produce a most imaginative comical Samuel Pickwick Esquire.

He rubbed his eyes, looked round the room in startled amazement. But there was no answer to his thoughts.

He went downstairs, sketch pad tucked under his arm to meet Dickens at the same table that they occupied last night, and he noticed the chair by the now cindered fire was still empty .......but rocking to and fro..... ©

Here we delve more into the whimsical, wacky and interesting world of Montgolfier: Previously I’d spent 3 weeks on an uninhabited island out in the Atlantic where you got nothing except what you had brought in your rucksack. There was a small food supply there so you got used to scraping mould off blocks of cheese.

The biggest garden ornament I’ve ever come across was a large 4 engined French airliner. It had been towed there by tractor with the plane’s wings removed. But they had to watch for overhead wires catching on the tail plane.

Sheep wear their fleece on the outside to keep warm and animals with fur have the fur on the outside for warmth, so do we. Why do we put our sheep fleece on the inside for warmth? Are we doing it wrong?

Lots and lots of places do 2 meals for £10.00 but I’ve found one that does meals for two for £7.00n and they are good large meals.

I was born in a large Manor house in Yorkshire. So was Cardinal Robert Holgate who became the Archbishop of York. He was born there in 1481 so the house must have been built around 1400 about 600 years ago. There are talks going on that it may have to be demolished as someone wants to build a railway even though there are plenty of fields behind and in front of it. Shame. It’s a magnificent place.

A friend of mine has a superb collection of items he has found over the years with his metal detector. He liaises with the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The oldest item he has is a small silver coin dating back to 850 B.C. He’s only ever sold one coin about the size of a 50p piece for £8,000.

Episode 61......Chilli Con Carnage (Pt. 1) On my travels across North America I became aware of the rivalry between certain states, and even areas within these states of claiming to be home to the best this and that in the culinary world. I came across several restaurants claiming to be the 'home of the very best BBQ sauce'; the 'very best steak house'; and the 'very best fried chicken'. And it did not just stop at the commercial outlets, when I was fortunate enough to get invited to some 'good ol' home cooking, I had had apparently the 'very best meatloaf'; the 'very best roast chicken and homemade gravy'...well you get the picture. So I decided in 2012 when I was travelling around the U.S. I would make a study of the different versions of Chilli there are, we know it as Chilli-con-Carne or chilli with meat, and you'll be surprised.

So I made a journal of my discoveries and wrote down the recipes, some needed a bit of persuading from the current custodian of the family recipe and the 'secret ingredients', but I usually found a couple of glasses of bourbon did the trick. I often wonder what I will put in my column and the other day I came across the journal with the recipes. I thought that I could write about them here, and possibly add a few recipes as well. So for the next few months I'll be reporting about the 'Chilli-conCarnage' and will submit the odd recipe (some quite odd indeed) for you to try. But be warned fellow readers, many of these recipes are not for beginners, these are for real lovers of the heat and fire in your bellies, and you will have to get some ingredients further afield than the local supermarket or even online, but it is worth it if you want s o m e t hi n g a u t h e n t i c a l l y different.

My first dish that was part of this study was a simple recipe that I stumbled across when I was in a Mexican restaurant in Denver, Colorado, and it was called the 'Chilli Colorado con Carne'. It was advertised on the menu as being the 'Grandfather

of the Tex-Mex Chilli' and came with a note "This recipe is from northern Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley which was given to us by the Mexican vaqueros driving cattle North into Texas. The name, Chile Colorado con Carne roughly translates to Red Chile with Meat". I'd never of this recipe, to be honest, I did not realise at the time there were so many different chilli recipes at all, and I thought I'd go for it. An entry in my journal next to the recipe name was three red chillies written in red biro , unfortunately there is no reference to whether it meant I'd given it three out of five, or whether it related to the strength. Later entries in the journal had similar tally marks, the most being five, which is why I presumed it was marked out of five.

This particular recipe, like most others in my study, was served in a bowl and came with cornbread, and not on a bed of rice. It did not contain tomatoes or red kidney beans either. It requires dried Ancho chillies, dried New Mexico chilli and Mexican oregano, all three of these ingredients pop up regularly in the recipes and are well worth the extra effort in getting them. The only other difference is that the meat is cubed chuck or braising steak.

Other ingredients include a small-medium onion, garlic cloves, ground cumin. An optional extra is to use peanut oil, this is great too, as it gives off a subtle nutty flavour. You hydrate the chillies (removing the stems, seeds and internal tissue) and soak in water for 30 minutes. Cook the meat as usual until browned and add the chilli water. Blend the chillies and cooking stock and make a puree, mash the garlic with some salt and make a paste. In another pan cook the onion and garlic paste and add flour when onion is softened.

Add onion-flour mixture, Mexican oregano and cumin to the meat pan, cover and simmer for 11/2 hours, stirring often.
