The beautiful Warden Abbey vineyard is now run by Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and cared for by volunteers. Reflections in the Dewpond.

The Photo Album 'The Old House' The Old biscuit tin proved to be an entertaining past time, it had evoked faded memories, the moment when the photos were taken, and of course that the Sun was always shining. The Old House was for some reason built with the back garden to the road, so you were never short of someone to talk to, or invite in, to play with. As a child growing up after the W.W. 2. The Mrs Sam told The Five Old Friends, that garden and The Old House were the centre of the Universe, a place of warmth and happiness, as she had told Sam Ilex many times! Perhaps this feeling was not unique, after all the war was over, the men were home, no continual worry for the welfare of

(his brother sang Opera as an amateur,) his family had afforded piano before the war, if he heard a tune, he could sit at our second hand organ and repeat it perfectly.

When we had company he would play the treasured piano accordion.

A talented man. Which bypassed The Mrs Sam, but three of the grandchildren played instruments.

The eldest Joanne twice playing solo the tuba with the fantastic Bedfordshire Music at the Albert Hall. A very proud family. The Mrs Sam said that her Dad would have so enjoyed the experience, and knowing that his eldest grandson had at the tender age of nearly fifty taken up playing the saxophone, would have given him so much pleasure.

The Old House, if an old house can be an influence, passed on contentment, and was a cosy blanket, if an old house, without electricity or gas, there being only

family miles away from home, the returning men had plenty of work.

However things had changed.

Some men found families had grown up, the wives had become independent, having been in sole charge of home and children.

Women had found their feet.

Children had a Dad to dish out discipline, much stricter than Mum. The Mrs Sam smiled as she retold how a balmy summer evening, everyone of her neighbour’s children were still out playing over the hedge, bordering the tiny front garden, just under her bedroom window. It was late but double summer time operated then. Not having the courage to climb down to join them, just watching and talking to those below. Dad and Mum and Auntie must have heard, didn't come up or shout to go to sleep. Perhaps a good play on the ancient wireless, or classical music, Dad had a wonderful full voice,

one cold tap above the brown sink in the scullery, The Mrs Sam had remembered something of that room, her Mum didn't like children to be there, and there were mice.

Great Aunt Lizzie told that the eggs had frozen solid during the winter of 1947. The fire kept going night and day. The Mrs Sam's Dad had walked across hedge high snow through the fields to get to work.

The roads covered in snow made riding a bicycle impossible. How the women managed the washing or even keeping everyone clean since the pipes to that single tap froze solid too. Maybe they melted snow, or got ice from the waterbutt?

That's what the Five Old Boys would have done.

To this day The Mrs Sam stocks up for winter just as the women did, get wood in, food that you can make into soups or stews.

The garden was busy which is lovely to see as Ian puts in so much time and effort.

The forecast is promising and with an extended summer we hope to see a lot more of you enjoying our lovely garden.

We have 3 real ales, we are in the good beer guide, lots of lovely wines and some cold beers, couple those with some really tasty dishes lovingly prepared and it’s a recipe for relaxation.

Babs had started a new job which she was very pleased about but it involved commuting into the city.

With Dr. Benjamin J Häagen - ‘Traveller Extraordinaire’ The history of Oslo can be traced back over 1,000 years. Oslo was founded in 1048 by the king, Harald Hardråde. The city became capital of Norway around 1300.

Oslo is situated in an amphitheatre-like setting, with the city centre close to the Oslofjord and residential areas stretching uphill from there in all directions. Behind the residential areas, the forested area of Marka (Nordmarka, Østmarka, Lillomarka) extends, with flora and fauna that is quite extraordinary for a city of this size. Moose are commonplace and easily spotted in winter.

The Oslofjord is a lake in the Skagerrak bay, stretching inland from the North Sea. In the opposite direction, the inlet runs towards Øresund and the Baltic Sea. Oslo has an impressive archipelago of islands, which in summer becomes the city's favoured playground.

Oslo, dear reader is closer to our home than perhaps you would imagine, yet it is worlds apart in terms of culture and architecture. As by now you have probably guessed this is where I am writing my latest travel blog! Now that is a term that I used for the first time. I am here with my long time travel companion Flora. As you know Flora was recently married and I honestly thought that she would be too busy now with the Baskin-Robbins empire and new husband to spend any travelling with me. But no, when I was speaking with her about having to come to Norway for one of by medical lectures, she jumped at the chance to accompany me. This is so helpful as she understand how I present and assists me organise the presentations, having travelled with me now for many years!

So, when I said last evening that I wanted to document my latest travel adventure she immediately told me not to spend too much time writing my travel blog as she wanted to search out one of our favourite eateries! At first I was unsure what she was referring too when she used the term blog, by he ho, I guess I have to enter the 21st century at some point. The English language is changing so fast, it would appear!

What Flora was referring to was Gutta på Haugen which a small deli at St. Hanshaugen. We found it easily even though we had not been here for a while. It’s always been a go-to place for my favourite ice cream brand: Kulinaris. A few years ago Gutta på Haugen started selling soft serves in their store, made with Kulinaris ice cream. The best part was the amazing homemade toppings they offered – like salted caramel. This year they have taken the whole ice cream sale up a notch. A separate ice cream parlour has been built on the open space in front of the park outside.

Now they’ve got an organic soft serve instead, but Kulinaris is no longer the partner. Henning-Olsen was the only one that could make an organic ice cream and help fund the new project, according to the store manager Benedicte Eriksen, who remembered me even after a few years lapse. I really didn’t think that I visited his establishment that much, but I must be wrong! The homemade toppings are still available, and they make new special combinations every weekend. I asked for a combo of their rhubarb compote and liquorice sprinkles. It was a great mix of sweet, acidic and salt, with a nice crunch! If you choose to visit the queues can get long outside this place – we were lucky on this day.

It’s a shame Kathryn could not be here, being heavily tied up on her Voynich manuscript, but she will be travelling with me again soon, I hope. Lovely to spend time with Flora though!

BANANAS BAKED IN SHERRY For four people you will need: 6 fairly soft bananas About 130ml medium sherry 75gm Demerara sugar 18gm butter Whipped cream and sponge

fingers to serve Preheat oven to about 190 deg c. Then peel bananas, cut in half lengthways and place in shallow ovenproof dish.

Pour the sherry over, sprinkle with sugar and dot with butter.

Bake for about 25 minutes and serve really hot with the cream and sponge fingers.

I had a power cut at my house this morning.

My PC, Laptop, TV, DVD, IPad and new surround sound music system were all shut down.

Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was dead.

To top it off, it was raining so I couldn’t go for a walk, bike, or run.

The garage door opener needed electricity so I couldn’t go anywhere in the car.

I went to the kitchen to make coffee and then remembered this also needed power, so I sat and talked with my wife for a few hours.

HUMAN GIVENS ‘A NEW APROACH’ Ben Keenan

The world of counselling/psychotherapy is a very different place to what it was even ten years ago!

Neurological science has provided insights that when combined with the best of other approaches provides a fast and effective solution focused therapy (SFBT) that is embodied in Human Givens. Treatment does not just mean sitting and endlessly talking, it is also about effectively understanding the issues and providing realistic change.

Depression, Sleeplessness, Anxiety, OCD, Phobia’s, PTSD, Addiction (drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, food)

These are difficult and sometimes dangerous emotions. For the majority of people they are not biological illnesses but complex arousals that can arise from our spectrum of thought and emotion.

These conditions arise as a result of circumstances preventing our innate needs being met. This gives access to fast, safe, non invasive, and drug free methods of effective treatment in as few sessions as possible, often in weeks not years!

Having had 27 years’ experience of offering emotional support in the voluntary sector, I retrained in the Human Givens approach. Achieving a distinction in the Level 2 Diploma in March 2015 allowed me to start accepting clients. Now operating as an HG.DIP.P Trainee (with supervision) as I work towards a higher level of accreditation. I also carry comprehensive professional insurance.

YOUNG DOGS CAN LEARN TRICKS, EVEN IF YOU DON’T TEACH THEM! England 1950’s – 60’s?

My family inherited a Welsh Collie from a farm in West Cornwall when the farmer witnessed his cattleman breaking a broom handle over a cows' back! He was fired on the spot and could not take the dog, so we got her; she had been badly beaten for years but was well trained and soon became a friendly companion to all of us.

Some 9 years later I “acquired” a dog of my own, a pure bred mongrel bitch who soon became good friends with the collie, “Jan” and the rest of us.

Now one regular event was mum cooking a large stew for the family, she would prepare the meat by cubing it and removing gristle and other unwanted tissue from the meat and just drop the waste bits on the quarry tile floor, Jan knew where it would land and just stared at that spot with her nose 1” from the floor, shovelling up every morsel. Not long after my dog “Tammy” arrived on the scene this all changed

and I don’t believe Jan ever worked out why; Tammy would sit beside Jan and snatch every snack out of the air before it reached the floor. Later still my dad took early retirement and he and mum returned to where he was brought up and where I was born, in West Cornwall.

My dad would take the dogs for a walk along Marazion beach and both dogs were obedient and eager to respond to commands, however as time went by, Jan became quite deaf and her eyesight also deteriorated, but some how she had taught Tammy the rules about bringing in cattle and when my father failed to call the old dog back, he simply asked Tammy to collect her, and off she would go and round her up.

We have owned two dogs since then, one mongrel like Tammy and a mad collie called Brin, I prefer mongrels, but either way we would like to have a dog again, they make great friends, unlike cats that just need staff!!

Brother’s in Armchairs They say “blood is thicker than water”, and whoever “they” are, also talk about “brotherly love”. This was sorely tested about 20 years ago when events beyond my control threw myself into my brother’s care and for 3 weeks back into the family fold.

Now my brother and I, my only sibling and family member that is left, get on very well, very well indeed ... when we are apart that is. The problem is that we like to squabble, and we usually squabble whilst drinking.

Squabbling soon becomes bickering, which then

becomes arguing, and eventually, well, you can guess the rest. Fuddler himself has witnessed a “squabble” or two when my brother has visited Fuddlerland, who it must be said thought it was quite amusing.

Well back to 20 years ago, I was living in a flat in Hertford at the time, on a six monthly recurring lease. I was often away working on excavations during the summer months and on this occasion I was working in a cave in north Wales. My lease on the flat ran out and the owner had not been renewed it as she wanted to sell the property and I was made homeless. Of course I knew nothing of this and it was down to my brother to sort out all my possessions

Worse still, he had to accommodate me until I found, or as it turned out, he found, a suitable alternative abode.

The first week went quite well, once the bathroom and toilet rotas were sorted, it was ok. Sister-in-law had moved in with her mother, as she had got fed up with finding my brother and I snoring away to a fuzzy television screen in the two armchairs in the living room. By the end of the second week our squabbles had vanished, we only had rows now. Until a bottle of wine or two, then we’d just fall asleep and snore. By the end of the third week, and physical violence was being promised by both parties, my brother came home one

afternoon in a surprisingly good mood. “I have found you a great and affordable place to live matey” he said cheerfully. “Where is it” I asked whilst he drove me to see it. “There, over there” he pointed. “But, it’s a barge” I said. “Indeed” he smiled, and puffed away smugly on a very fat expensive looking cigar. ... to be continued "I smile because you're my Brother, I laugh because there is nothing you can do about it"
