The 8th Ampthill & District Camera Club Exhibition will take place on Saturday 18th June 2016 at Parkside Hall, Woburn St, Ampthill, MK45 2HX between 10.00am and 4.15pm.

The Exhibition of the Club photographers’ work offers an excellent chance to see creative work from local members and perhaps yourself! This year the Club is holding a public competition for non-members to submit digital images, of any subject, which will be judged and prizes awarded. There are two classes for entry: Junior (Under 16 years of age) and Adult (16 years of age and over).

Club members will also be hosting a Portrait Studio where you can have family and/or individual photos taken for a very reasonable price.

Accompanied children under 12 go free. Programmes are available on the day from the Heritage Centre, the free car park in Park Street and on The Green, opposite the Woburn Hotel. Also on The Green there will be a Tombola and book and plant stalls and a collection of scarecrows, including some made by the children at Woburn Lower School. The School will be open for refreshments etc and the School allotments will be on the open gardens lists.

The scarecrow competition is open to every one, so if you fancy making a scarecrow just bring it to The Green on the day or for more information phone 01525 290631.

This year’s Church fete is to be held on Saturday June 25th at Millbrook Village Hall and Playing field. The fete is to be opened at 2.30pm by Chris and Aeonie Shrimpton and will include a barbeque, cream teas, Splat the Rat, Pimms and various other stalls. The Quintessential Brass Band will be playing during the afternoon. Everyone will be made most welcome!

The Photo Album 'The Old House' Sam Ilex placed an old biscuit tin on the table, in the wash house shed, out came sepia photos, early black and white, Victorian, hand coloured, with the sitters sat bolt upright, looking very uncomfortable, some photos with obviously family members, also appearing as if they wanted to be somewhere else, all in their Sunday Best. (Often the photographer hired out outfits and hats) in velvet covered cases portrayed young men or young girls to exchange on engagement.

The Five Old Boys sorting through the pile found dog eared photos of a cottage and yard. We had better get The Mrs Sam,

remarked Sam Ilex, these are her family's, and she will know all the history about them, she will bring another pot of tea if I smile nice. He was right of course! The Mrs Sam would never miss a chance to retell stories from the past, especially ones of family and her village Houghton Conquest and the beloved Old House.

Ten Acre handed The Mrs Sam a heap of ageing photographs.

Sorting each one with a tear in her eye, found a few more of the cottage with various family members posed in front. Many of great grandparents, gone long before, (thank goodness other relatives loved talking about the pictures too) The old couple had retired from the Knife and Cleaver only had to walk from one door to the next door.

with the 'sit up and beg' bicycle, that was part of the stock of Great Uncle Joe's village shop. He had been gassed in W.W.1 the family helped to fund the business. The small barn shop, just at the bottom of the garden across the neighbours path, selling sweets, tobacco, shampoo (do you recall Vaseline powder shampoo that mixed with warm water made your hair soft and shiny, rinsed out finally with beer for added shine) allsorts of Bibs a n d Bob's, whatever you needed.

At the rear a large barn for the bicycles and accumulators for the wireless, no electric in them days.

A pot bellied stove kept the cavernous barn warm in winter.

Look said The Mrs Sam you can just see in the background of a picture of me when little.

Better make another pot of tea.

It seemed so easy to say yes to this trip when I spoke with Kathryn a few days after the wedding! That was such a marvellous day and I surprised myself with how well Kathryn and I had got on! Please understand dear reader, that although she has been my publisher for so many years, we had never spent the time to get to know one another. The wedding had sorted that!

So here we are in Barcelona. Kathryn had to be here as there is a side to her work that I had no previous knowledge. She translates manuscripts and apparently is an authority on what we now affectionately call the Middle East. She spoke at length at the wedding explaining the amount of scrolls and other documents that have yet to be fully translated. It may come as some surprise to you as it did to me that many are written in code. Some use a very basic code that is easy to translate and others quite complex. This is going to be a fascinating few days!

I have always found Barcelona a peculiar mixture of different architecture and with a fascinating history. Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economical and administrative centre of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination.

Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Please do spend time visiting these architectural masterpieces.

Barcelona is unquestionably an incredible location bursting with places to visit. However it is not always an easy task with the searing heat of summer in full force….unless that is, you know a good ice-cream parlour to visit and cool off for a while!

I had suggested to Kathryn that we should seek out one of my favourite places, Arcobaleno when we have a spare half hour.

This is ‘the’ gelateria in Barcelona. If like me you are a fan of ice-cream you absolutely cannot leave Barcelona without trying one of these succulent ices. Run by real Italians, Arcobaleno (rainbow in Italian) attracts numerous Barcelona locals and tourists in the neighbourhood. All ice-creams are made according to a traditional and magical homemade recipe that only the Italian masters withhold. Amongst the great number of different flavours on offer you might fall for the fior di latte, a real torrent of freshness for your palate.

As it was Sunday, it had to be roasts. ‘Two beef please and one slow cooked lamb.’ Great care is taken to ask how you wish your meat to be prepared and when it arrives it always matches your description.

For dessert, we shared a platter of local cheeses and washed the whole lot down with a very pleasant and reasonably priced Cabinet Sauvignon red.

Suitably full and content, I am in no hurry to gather my party and leave, but there is no rush

and no-one clambering to move you on in order to accommodate the next diners, good job, on the day we sat next to the open bi-folding doors which lead onto a patio bedecked with box hedging and early Spring flowers, a perfect vision to contemplate the delightful lunch and enchanting company you have just enjoyed!

Episode 51 ......................

Boris I know at least one of my more senior readers got fed up hearing about my dog walking adventures but I felt I must document my experience with Boris. I was asked by my old mate Nick if I could look after a dog that Laura, his daughter, was looking after as they all had to go away at short notice. A few days in Fuddlerland and the offer of a bottle of wine or two and a curry sealed the deal.

On arrival at Nick and Mrs A’s, I asked to see who my chum was going to be. “He’s in the garden ... somewhere” said Mrs A. Boris was an eight month old, pure white,

fluffy haired Samoyed (they hunt polar bears apparently) and on seeing me he bounded up and almost knocked me down. It was safe to say we instantly bonded.

Nick and Mrs A were off, and their parting comments were “Oh I wouldn’t let him off the lead, he cost over £2,500”, and just as they hurriedly left Nick shouted out “Good luck matey” That afternoon I was doing some work on the laptop, Boris was amusing himself in the garden when there was a knock at the back door. It was one of the neighbours bringing Boris back after tunnelling his way under the fence. The rest of the afternoon was spent Boris proofing the garden. Not that the other neighbours, Gary

Time for a walk, Boris and I were having a pleasant stroll through the Alameda, when the peace was broken by the thunderous sound of dry branches snapping and the undergrowth being trampled and squashed, and the cacophony punctuated by the odd human cry for help as Boris tore off after a squirrel with me dragged behind.

With Boris’s image on lost posters on lampposts all round Fuddlerland, I held on.

When we eventually stopped, I got up and made for the

local pub as I needed a drink, or three. With Boris at my feet and his lead hanging from the hook on the bar, I retold my story to my old mucker Wilko. “So, where is he now?” he asked smiling and holding up a chewed off end of a lead. I found Boris in the pub garden, but I already knew this was three days where I was not going to be allowed to relax one bit.

Boris’s real name is Rufus, but Boris seemed much more appropriate for a big, blonde, fuzzy haired, blundering oaf.

Any resemblance to real people in this article is purely intentional.

As I have discovered myself, there are no disasters, only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters.
