The 8th Ampthill & District Camera Club Exhibition will take place on Saturday 18th June 2016 at Parkside Hall, Woburn St, Ampthill, MK45 2HX between 10.00am and 4.15pm.

The Exhibition of the Club photographers’ work offers an excellent chance to see creative work from local members and perhaps yourself!

This year the Club is holding a public competition for nonmembers to submit digital images, of any subject, which will be judged and prizes awarded. There are two classes for entry: Junior (Under 16 years of age) and Adult (16 years of age and over).

Club members will also be hosting a Portrait Studio where you can have family and/or individual photos taken for a very reasonable price.

THE PHOTO ALBUM ‘Oh dear,’ remarked Ten Acre, picking up fallen photos off the Wash house Shed floor, as the album was moved to make way for tea and cakes, ‘these pictures look different’. On closer inspection Sam Ilex recognised the places from his father's description long ago, and recounted these stories.

During W.W.II, the Great Hunting Park had been used for a P.O.W. Camp housing German prisoners, formerly a military camp across the road, using a land workers hostel were Italian P.O.W. (roughly where Cheshire Home is today).

The Italian Farmer was overwhelmed with happiness to hear and see an Englishman, and heartedly welcomed him to his home, for wine and cheese tasting calling all the family together to meet Colin. Then telling of being a P.O.W in England, how he loved the English missed the life.

Inquiring as to where he was a prisoner, the farmer said oh you

P er cy ' s H a s t i ng s School all came to the village.

All these lads spending a lovely time in the village, fields and woods freedom from the activities in London and the coast.

Colin and Brian's mother one of four siblings born in The Chequer's (down Ampthill Hill) to add to the other five offspring, later she married Johnny a tailor from Shepherds Bush, so up to

wouldn't know it, just a little village in Bedfordshire, Colin now curious asked whereabouts, oh you wouldn't know it - Houghton Conquest near Ampthill. Oh but I do I love the village, have fond memories myself said Colin.

The Italian Farmer crying with happiness, in that that someone knew the village, had walked there, knew the people. After much wine and food he was still crying. A shared experience that had welcomed others when conflict came into their lives.

Colin never did pay for the cheese.

A new friend denoted by a kiss on both cheeks.

Colin's Hastings Parish Church was the one that Percy attended as a boy.

Wonder if those boys saw the Italian Farmer in the fields working.

The Five Friends found this story very moving.

Babs went off to work with her packed lunch in a plastic box. When it came to lunch time she opened the box, peeped inside the sandwiches and exclaimed ‘Oh, I don’t like cheese’ and promptly gave them away. On day 2 she did exactly the same opened the sandwiches and said ‘Oh, I don’t like cheese’ and again gave them away.

On day 3 she just gave the sandwiches away saying ‘Oh, I don’t like cheese’ without peeping.

‘How did you know they were cheese - you didn’t look?’ asked one of her colleagues.

‘I should know - I make them.’ replied Babs sensibly.

I wanted to go out walking except I felt a little self conscious walking alone in the park. So I went out carrying a dog’s lead over my arm and shouted randomly.

Ampthill Celebrates Capability Brown

Queen Elizabeth II 2016 is an important year for Ampthill Great Park.

The Heritage Lottery Parks for People project is well under way and this year marks 300 years since the birth of ‘Capability’ Brown .Brown worked in the Park during the 1770s and is responsible for most of the Park’s landscaping.

Ampthill Park is a “Country Park, owned and managed by the Town Council. The Greensand Trust Rangers now do the day to day work in the Park. The Park is very well used and the Council has a responsibility to ensure the ongoing conservation of its historic and natural heritage while ensuring free public access for recreation. Over a third of the Town’s rates, precept is spent each year on maintaining the park.

The Heritage Lottery Parks for People grant has enabled the Council to restore many of the Parks views and vistas that had been lost by encroaching scrub and trees and also to restore the lowland acid grassland habitat that is rare in Bedfordshire. This type of management is not unusual on a grade II listed designed landscape where the unique design of the park can be lost forever due to lack of management. This type of work cannot take place without the correct research and preparation and authorisation from Statutory Government Organisations.

The landscape work has now been completed to restore the parkland and open up spectacular views and vistas from the Greensand Ridge looking out across the Marston Vale.

There will be Capability Brown Guided Tour days hosted by the Friends of Ampthill Park to explain the Brown features in the Park on Tuesday 21st June and Sunday 18th September. The walks are free from 10am – 4pm, and will start from the West Car Park every 1/2 hour and last for around one hour. A display and Cream teas and refreshment will also be available.

A theatrical production “ Brown: The Eye Catcher “ by John Cobb at Parkside Hall at 7.00 for 7.30pm has also been organised for the 16th September; Tickets £10 Tickets for the illustrated talk and theatrical show will be available for sale at the Ampthill Town Council Offices, The Park Hub, Fairies and Frogs and Waitrose.

SAUSAGES IN SPICY WHITE WINE AND APPLE SAUCE You will need for 2 people: A bottle of dry white wine (some for slurping and some for cooking!)

6 good quality pork sausages from your local butcher 2 crisp dessert apples 1 shallot (or 1/2 small onion) 70g butter 200 ml chicken stock 2 tbps light brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Also you will need two frying pans.

Firstly lock the kitchen door (you are the chef after all!) and pour yourself a nice glass of wine.

Then heat about 300 ml of the wine until boiling in a large frying pan, carefully drop in the sausages, reduce the heat and poach for about 10 minutes.

Whilst this is going on, peel and chop finely the shallot, peel, core, quarter and slice the apples - and maybe grab the opportunity for another crafty slurp!

Melt a little butter in the second pan, transfer the

sausages from the 1st pan to the 2nd and gently fry them until golden brown.

Then, back to pan 1: add the shallot to the wine with all the remaining ingredients and bring the mixture to the boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer till the apples are soft and the liquid becomes a thinnish syrup.

Then, treat yourself to another glass of wine, call your companion and serve.

Delicious as it is or may be served with creamy mashed potato if so desired.

Over the past twelve months or so, the media has regularly brought up the apparent excess of members in the House of Lords.

It seems that there are rumblings from our own local Parlourment buildings where perhaps a member from The House of Commoners has got a tad confused.

It is alleged that someone from the Commoners has been spying, to see how many are actually attending in The House of Lordships (“The Other Place”). At time of going to press, Leader of The House of Commoners, Sir Rusty d'Flèche, had no comment to make. However, Lord Dick of Hammond, Leader of The House of Lordships has said that he feels the rumours are true and that “all sorts of skulduggery are afoot”.

With Dr. Benjamin J Häagen - ‘Traveller Extraordinaire’ It has been a very busy time in the family these past few months.

All attention has been on the final planning of the wedding of my wonderful niece, Flora. Life will certainly change for her becoming a Baskin-Robbins and also for me, where I will lose my regular travel companion. I have very mixed feelings as I am so very happy for her and at the same time know that much of my future travel will be without her. She did telephone me the other day on my Smartphone to say that she had been speaking with Ashley who will have to spend many months of each year travelling on business and although Flora will go with him on some occasions, she wanted me to know that she will still have time to spend with me. It will all be about what works and what doesn’t.

The wedding was an occasion not to be repeated. The BaskinRobbins family estate was given over in it’s entirely to host their big day! I can honestly say that no expense was spared and a wonderful time was had by all. Being a single man, I am a little wary of with whom I will be seated. I should not have worried as Flora does look out for me and knows not to make me uncomfortable. It was therefore a delight to be seated next to a charming and yes, beautiful lady that I have known for many years. Kathryn runs a publishing business in the heart of London and she has published many of my medical papers over the years and became a family friend. Kathryn shares my love of travel and of course much of our conversation was devoted to where we had been recently. I had not seen Kathryn for a couple of years so there was much to speak about. After speaking about my recent trip to Iceland, she now wants me to accompany her there.

Looks as though I have been elected her travel guide!

My absolute delight came a little later in the evening when from nowhere a ‘popup’ gelato bar appeared. I could not believe my eyes. I have already said that no expense was spared and it would seem that Flora and Ashley had thought of everything and everyone, or at least their brief to the wedding planner had been very thorough! It did not take any encouragement to move from our table with Kathryn in hand to explore what delights were on offer. Flora had remembered a wedding she had attended some months earlier in New York and had borrowed the idea for her day. It added a sense of fun as the whole day started to take on the feel of a typical English summer fayre with many other ‘popup’ stalls appearing with delights from around the world!

There were some 30 different flavours to choose from and I went for the Stracciatella a Vanilla Gelato with chocolate flakes throughout. If you enjoy chocolate chip ice cream, this tasty bad boy is for you.

Kathryn spent some minutes making her choice which was beginning to hold up the queue that was forming behind us. You cannot rush Kathryn when such important decisions are to be made. She went for the Wild Berries Cheesecake which is a light cheesecake gelato with a swirl of fresh berries (blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries).

We spent the rest of the day eating, dancing and planning future travel! Who knows?

I knew someone who was a very keen rugger player so for his birthday I gave him a nice leather rugger ball to which I had attached a handle off an old suitcase so the he would be the envy of his friends when he ran with the ball.

‘How did it go?’ He asked as I approached.

‘I got made assistant supervisor,’ I told him excitingly.

‘Clive told me last Monday after the supervisors meeting.’

‘You might have said something mate.’ But I knew he couldn’t and wouldn’t have done, protocol and all that, plus it would have ruined his bit of fun.

‘But at least we’re both assistant supervisors now', I said, 'So no more bossing me about, OK.’ I turned round smiling to go and get my bag and notebook out of the tool shed.

‘Umm, Tank,’ Pete said casually as I mooched off smugly. ‘Clive didn’t tell you then?’

As I walked off towards where the rest of the guys were working, It was obvious that Pete or Hugh had told them about my promotion, for as I called out ‘Clear up your loose’ it was greeted with nothing more than the usual response of grateful approval that it was break time, and there was nobody more surprised than I giving the command. As I sat on an upturned bucket watching them clear up and tidy the site before lunch I pondered a new calling and that realised my career was now well and truly in ruins.

It is curious how fate plays its hand. If I had gone to that party

with my mates back on that Friday night in 1983 instead of going to get a take-away, I would probably never had met Hugh, Ivan, Buzz and Pete and the others. I might have stayed at the Gas Board and certainly would not have become an archaeologist. Since then I have had the experiences of a lifetime, been on many different excavations, had a career in a national museum and finally did venture into academia and got several research degrees and might even do a PhD. I have met some very interesting people, many whom I have stayed in contact with and a few that remain best mates.
