PRESIDENT'S REPORT

President’s Report By Marty Lorick, NATM President Although it’s hard to believe half the year has come and gone already, the renewed vigor of the new year is still very much alive for NATM. This summer holds key events to grow NATM’s nationwide association just wrapped up another successful Trailer Safety Week in June, and the NATM Board of Directors will meet at the end of July for its 2023-2025 Strategic Planning session. Preparation for the 2023 NATM Convention & Trade Show is in full swing. Booth sales have opened to select 2022 sponsors as of May 30th, educational sessions are being finalized, and the Association is preparing to open registration in September. NATM is excited to welcome dealers back to the NATM Convention & Trade Show for the second year. With networking opportunities and a specialized educational track, this is sure to be a can’t miss event! To learn more about the 2023 Convention & Trade Show, including sponsorships opportunities, turn to page 56.

a wide array of sources. While time is short for all of us as we balance business needs, your continued participation is absolutely critical for NATM to be a value-add for members. Answering surveys, reading Tracks and the NATM Insider, and engaging with your representatives on the NATM Board or committees as well as staff will better position the Association to help you. Thank you for your continued commitment! NATM exists to support our industry and improve the safety of our nation’s roadways. There is no NATM without each of you! ■

In June, NATM hosted its Regulatory Roundup and Capitol Hill Visits in Washington, D.C. NATM’s government affairs program remains active on Capitol Hill. NATM regularly works with legislators to educate them about the concerns and challenges facing the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. With supply chain delays and workforce shortages, the industry needs support and common-sense solutions. Meeting with legislators are an important tool in NATM’s advocacy arsenal but are just the first steps in educating legislators who have a profound impact on the regulatory environment the industry must work within. Inviting Members of Congress to tour NATM Member facilities is another great way to educate legislators about our industry. NATM encourages both suppliers and trailer manufacturers to schedule legislative plant tours or round tables to build relationships with political leaders. All members of Congress have an impact on the outcome of any legislation, so it is important to recruit advocates that understand and support the trailer industry. Hosting a plant tour is a simple process and NATM will assist with the invitation and scheduling. For more information, contact NATM Executive Director Kendra Ansley at Kendra.Ansley@natm.com. As the industry, on the whole, continues to thrive, your Association is continuing to look for ways to add value and lend support. The Association is creating the NATM Academy in partnership with a number of industry experts and expanding its marketing efforts to raise awareness about the value of the NATM Decal amongst dealers and end-users. Member feedback and communication are important parts of NATM’s ability to serve and provide opportunities for members to better arm themselves with knowledge and expertise from

Headquarters REPORT

J U LY/A U G U S T 2 0 2 2

By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director

August of this year marks my 10-year anniversary with the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM). When I was hired as Member Services Coordinator by Pam O’Toole Trusdale, I can still recall sitting in her office and asking, “Is it a problem if I don’t know a lot about trailers?” She chuckled and told me not to worry, I would learn. She was right. Through the generosity of our member volunteers, industry experts, and my co-workers over the years, I have learned an incredible amount about trailer manufacturing. Each day I continue to learn more. Thinking back over the last 10 years, I am in awe of the work the Association has accomplished and the growth of the industry. Some of the highlights include:

Compliance/Technical ›

Compliance Verification Program became a requirement for trailer manufacturer members

ISO 17020 Certification of Compliance Verification Program

Doubling the compliance/technical staff to meet the needs of a growing membership

Digitization of the Compliance Verification Program

Education and Resources ›

Despite the vast changes NATM has seen in the last 10 years, one thing has stayed the same—NATM has always existed because of its members and for its members. It has been a pleasure to serve the light- and mediumduty trailer manufacturing industry for a decade. This is an incredible industry filled with hard-working and generous people who share a commitment to roadway safety. I look forward to the next decade as NATM continues to adapt to the needs of the industry! ■

DOT Targeting Supply Chain Disruption By Brody Garland, K&L Gates

Dozens of ships anchored outside of America’s busiest ports, steadily spiking freight rates, and frustrated consumers inheriting both the paralyzing delays and the exorbitant price increases: these have been the painful realities within the global supply chain in recent years. In a whole-of-government effort to mitigate the root and proximate causes of the supply chain crisis, the Biden Administration has responded with a roadmap for achieving a more efficient and more resilient supply chain. In February, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released a report titled “Supply Chain Assessment of the Transportation Industrial Base: Freight and Logistics,” which provides multiple recommendations to address the ongoing supply chain crisis. Responding to Executive Order 14017: America’s Supply Chains, the report identifies and addresses ongoing challenges, while offering potential policy responses to strengthen the nation’s supply chain. The central theme of the DOT’s thorough report is the necessity to build resilient supply chains to address current and future disruptions. As a result of several factors, including the growth of “just in time” supply

8

July/August 2022

chains, the overwhelming demand for import cargoes during the COVID-19 pandemic, industry consolidation, and a general lack of investment in infrastructure, the DOT is concerned the current supply chain lacks resilience. The report highlights that concern in stark terms, noting the pandemic has compounded existing supply chain issues, which has resulted in temporary port closures, shortages across the supply chain, elevated levels of congestion, and increased prices for consumers. The release also highlights several barriers to supply chain resilience the recommendations hope to mitigate, including equipment and warehouse capacity, workforce conditions, and data availability, among others. The report recognizes the federal government cannot unilaterally solve supply chain disruptions, as many of the component parts of the freight supply chain are owned and operated by the private sector, but notes federal, state, and local agencies can still play an important part by funding infrastructure investments, appropriately regulating the industry, improving supply chain data flows, and supporting cross-sector or multijurisdictional efforts to address supply chain resilience.

The report makes 62 specific recommendations for action by the DOT and related agencies to address these challenges and attempt to bolster the nation’s supply chain. The recommendations cover the whole spectrum of transportation supply chain stakeholders, addressing both very broad and relatively narrow policies. The findings are further separated based on the level of complexity of achieving its goal balanced against the cost of implementation and other corresponding factors. Among the report’s key recommendations are: ›

Investing in freight infrastructure, such as ports, bridges, and railroads, to enhance capacity and connectivity;

Developing inland ports and warehouse locations, as well as investing in the inland waterway system;

Coordinating with interagency partners to provide temporary solutions to ease port congestion, such as pop-up intermodal yards for containers;

Providing technical assistance to support the planning and coordination of freight investments and operations and supporting workers employed in this sector;

Developing and implementing strategies to improve the trucking sector, including ensuring there is truck parking availability consistent with land use and safety considerations;

Supporting domestic manufacturing, allyshoring and nearshoring efforts;

Improving data and research into supply chain performance, including the tracking of freight and supply chain data, and encouraging the development of state-level freight planning; and

Urging certain regulatory efforts, such as harmonizing the roles of the Surface Transportation Board, Federal Maritime Commission, and the DOT.

The DOT’s supply chain report is a wide-ranging plan of action that, if implemented according to all 62 recommendations, would impact the entirety of the transportation supply chain. Secretary Pete Buttigieg reinforced the criticality of the recommendations, noting “decades of underinvestment in our infrastructure, unprecedented consumer demand amid our strong economic recovery, and continued pressure from the pandemic have all put immense strain on our supply chains’’ and “this report lays out critically important steps we can take— both right now, and in the years ahead— to help strengthen our supply chains, create good-paying jobs, and ensure Americans can affordably and efficiently access the goods they rely on.” The concurrent crises of port congestion, supply chain disruption, and rising consumer product pricing have put considerable pressure on individuals and companies at every touchpoint of the global economy. As the federal government searches for answers to the productivity and resiliency challenges, these recommendations will guide the future actions of the DOT and the Biden Administration. Industry stakeholders will need to pay close attention and consider the potential impacts of the report on their businesses. ■

NATM Issues Retraction for Rear Impact Guard Article By Alex Stowe, NATM Technical Director Following publication of the “Rear Impact Guard Updates” article in the May/June 2022 issue of Tracks, the NATM Staff was made aware of an error relating to the section listing out what changes have been made to the Rear Impact Guard legislation. Numbered items 1 through 3 in the paragraph are correct, however the changes on numbers 4 through 6 were stated incorrectly and should read as follows: ›

10

4. That the rear impact guard is no more than 560 mm (22 inches) above the ground;

July/August 2022

5. That the rear impact guard is no more than 305 mm (12 inches) forward of the rear extremity of the vehicle;

6. That the rear impact guard shall have a cross sectional vertical height of at least 100 mm (4 inches) across its entire width.

NATM apologizes for this error and is issuing this retraction to help ensure the correct information is available for changes made to the rear impact guard legislation. ■

NATM Political Action Committee By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) established a Political Action Committee, the NATM PAC, in 2010. The NATM PAC serves to support members of Congress who support the light- and medium-duty trailer industry and its positions on matters of public policy. Campaign finance law requires NATM to secure “prior approval” from member companies before soliciting member companies’ executive and administrative personnel, stockholders, and the families of both groups. Member companies may not approve solicitations by more than one trade association in any calendar year. If, on behalf of the company you are authorized to represent, you would like to grant prior approval for the administrative personnel, stockholders, and the families of both groups of your company to be solicited by NATM in calendar

year 2022, please complete the prior approval agreement online using the QR code on this page. Since its inception, 48 individuals have contributed to the PAC raising more than $102,000 and those dollars have contributed to 78 incumbent campaign committees on both sides of the aisle. The PAC is governed by a Board of Directors comprised entirely of NATM members. The PAC Board is responsible for developing both an annual budget and confirming candidates to whom the PAC will contribute based on specific, established criteria. Having the PAC Board comprised of industry members is a key feature of assuring PAC goals align with industry needs. To learn more about the PAC, contact NATM PAC Treasurer Kendra Ansley at Kendra.Ansley@natm.com. ■

Boatmate Trailers Hosts Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

As part of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers’ (NATM) ongoing efforts to increase government affairs outreach and education, NATM trailer manufacturer member Boatmate Trailers, LLC hosted Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-2) on April 20, 2022 at their facility in Maryville, Tenn. Congressman Burchett took office in January 2019 and currently serves on the House Foreign Affairs and Transportation & Infrastructure committees. He also sits on the subcommittee on Aviation; Highways and Transit; and Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials. Rep. Burchett was accompanied by his Chief of Staff Michael Grider to tour the facility. Boatmate’s CEO Ron Miller, President Owen Shelton, Vice President Daniel Luby, Production Manager Josh Hawkins, Transportation/ Purchasing Manager Todd Scott, and ERP Systems Manager Alex Ransom had the opportunity to sit down with Rep. Burchett to discuss the history of Boatmate and share the success and growth the company has had. Boatmate was founded in 1983 and specializes in premium inboard, I/O and pontoon/tritoon trailers. Operating under 60,000 square feet, the company currently has 172 employees. As a result of increased demand for boats in 2020, the company implemented a weekend shift and currently builds trailers seven 14

days a week. They increased production from 6,300 trailers in 2018, to 8,400 in 2021, and are now on pace to build 9,200 trailers and are looking to grow. Touring the facility, the Boatmate team demonstrated new technology they have implemented in their trailer manufacturing processes. Of particular interest was www.NATM.com

the robotic welder in the small parts department. Rep. Burchett has a background in welding and painting and had previously intended to become a trade school instructor before going into politics. During the tour, he demonstrated his familiarity with manufacturing processes and had astute questions for the Boatmate executive team. Congressman Burchett’s visit to Boatmate’s facility is an important step in continuing to advocate for the needs of both component suppliers and manufacturers in the light- and- medium-duty trailer industry.

164% year-over-year. The most common cause of trailer accidents is lack of experience. As more Americans travel throughout the country, it’s critically important that they know how to properly use their trailers.” Current law requires each state to operate highway safety programs, however those programs do not include trailer safety initiatives. H.R. 6915 would amend 23 USC 402(a) (2)(A) to ensure these highway safety programs include initiatives “to educate the public about proper and safe usage of light- and medium-duty trailers, including required safety equipment and preventative maintenance for safety.” NATM and its member companies are invested in improving trailer safety, as evidenced by its annual Trailer Safety Week. NATM hopes this legislation will improve access to trailer safety information and resources. The Association is continuing to work with Congressman Burchett and Garamendi’s offices as well as other Congressional members as the bill sees its way to the floor. NATM’s Government Affairs program actively works to reach out to legislators on behalf of its membership. But, to successfully advocate on behalf of the industry, it is crucial for NATM member companies to contact the Association and alert them of potential challenges. With NATM member companies ranging from small shops to million-dollar companies, running a business is already a full-time job without the added responsibility of working with legislators. The Association will continue to work on behalf of these member companies to identify the possible impacts of legislation and strengthen the communication between the trailer industry and lawmakers through plant visits, legislative round tables, and its annual Regulatory Roundup & Capitol Hill visits in Washington, D.C. ■

Owen Shelton, president of Boatmate Trailers and past president of NATM, shared, “It’s beneficial to invite policymakers into our facilities because it brings light to the industry and its needs. These visits with members of Congress show what impact legislation can have on businesses and on families.” During the visit, the Boatmate team communicated the challenges facing their business and the needs of the constituents in Congressman Burchett’s district. Supply chain issues, workforce shortages, and tariffs have created complex, and multifaceted problems. It is important for legislators to see firsthand how their constituency is being affected. Throughout the tour, the Congressman listened to the different challenges facing Boatmate, as well as the optimistic outlook for its future as the company looks to meet the increased demand for boat trailers.

In March, Congressman Burchett cosponsored and introduced the Trailer Safety Improvement Act (H.R. 6915) along with Congressman Garamendi (CA-03). Alongside the introduction of the bill, Rep. Burchett’s office noted “In 2021, the United States experienced a 20% increase in car crash deaths. Concurrently, 47% of Americans expressed an intent to travel domestically, recreational vehicle sales increased by 33.8%, and trailer sales jumped 16

Tire Recordkeeping Requirements By Alex Stowe, NATM Technical Director

For purposes of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturer’s (NATM) Compliance Verification Program, members are required to follow both Department of Transportation regulations relating to tire recordkeeping, as well as the three-step process voted on by NATM’s Board of Directors in July of 2019. This three step process was developed as a result of ambiguity in federal regulation to help ensure members are able to meet the spirit and intent of the regulation. The Department of Transportation’s regulations relating to tire recordkeeping can be found in 49 CFR §574.8 through 574.10. The main way these recordkeeping requirements will impact members depends on whether members are shipping trailers with tires attached to the trailer or not, but please note in either situation members will have to maintain certain records. Additionally, a member’s tire distributor should be providing members with a TIN form/card given to end consumers and mailed back to a member’s tire manufacturer with relevant TIN information for the tires on the trailer.

Selling or Shipping Trailers with Tires Attached For members who are either selling trailers with tires attached directly to consumers or selling them to dealers with tires attached, members will be required to have a method in place to match trailer VIN information to the corresponding TINs of the tires attached to the trailer. The graphic above can assist with locating the TIN for tires members are using. Once the TINs have been located, members will be required to record and store this data, either in digital or paper copy so members have access to those records. The intent of these recordkeeping requirements is to ensure trailer manufacturers can assist in locating tires in the event of a recall.

1.

At the time of sale, a pre-completed TIN form must be provided to the purchaser with the TINs for each tire attached to the trailer, the form must have the member’s name and street address for identification purposes of the tire manufacturer;

2.

At the time of sale, the member can gather the purchaser’s name and address, the TINs for each tire attached to the trailer, and the member’s name and street address for identification purposes of the tire manufacturer. After the TIN form is completed, the member will ship this back to the tire manufacturer under this option; or

3.

The member may electronically transmit the following information on tire registration by any means authorized by the tire manufacturer. The information must include the purchaser’s name and address, the TINs for each tire attached to the trailer, and the member’s name and street address for identification purposes of the tire manufacturer.

Shipping Trailers without Tires Attached For members who are shipping trailers to dealers without tires attached, a system will still need to be in place to track the batches of VINs and TINs that are being sent to specific dealers, as a requirement of NATM’s Compliance Verification Program. The relevant information relating to this requirement can be found in the NATM Guidelines section B-7 dealing with tires. In July of 2019, the NATM Board of Directors approved the following three-step process that NATM Members must comply with to be in full compliance with the NATM Compliance Verification Program’s tire recordkeeping requirements: 1. A method of matching VINs and TINs, which could include batches of VINs and TINs,

For members who are shipping trailers without tires attached, you must meet the requirements listed above per the July 2019 NATM Board of Directors Meeting, which include: 1.

Having a method in place for matching batches of TINs and VINs that are sent to dealers;

2.

A system in place to keep track of those batches; and

3.

Proof the member is sending along partially completed TIN forms to their dealers.

For reference, this is an example of an incomplete TIN form below.

2. A method for keeping a record of those matches, 3. Proof that the trailer manufacturer is forwarding partially completed TIN forms to dealers. In this scenario, members will be responsible for tracking TINs and VINs that are sent to specific dealers. Dealers will be responsible for attaching tires to trailers, so there is no CVP requirement that manufacturers under this option keep track of which specific tires ended up on a specific trailer.

TIN Forms from Tire Distributors Under the Department of Transportation regulations, a member’s tire distributors should be providing them with a TIN form or card that can be mailed back to them for each trailer purchased. If your tire manufacturer is not providing the TIN form or card, the trailer manufacturer must request the form/card so it can fulfill its obligation in providing the cards as outlined below. For members who are selling trailers directly to consumers, one of three methods must be used for completing TIN forms and providing them back to the member’s tire manufacturer: 20

Compliance Verification Program Reminders By Alex Stowe, NATM Technical Director

As the National Association of Trailer Manufacturer’s (NATM) consultants have returned to in-person Compliance Verification Program (CVP) consultations, here are some reminders about the program.

Scheduling and Other Pre-Consultation Documentation NATM trailer manufacturer members will receive a consultation from NATM every two years. An NATM consultant will contact a member via email one to three months prior to a consultation to confirm the consultation date. Members should ensure they are responding to NATM’s requests, as consultants look to book these consultations based on certification expiration dates and location. Once a date has been confirmed, the NATM consultant will send a copy of the CVP inspection procedures for review along with a copy of the NATM CVP Policies and Procedures that can be signed electronically. Please ensure the company’s contact information is updated online or directly with NATM so NATM has the correct contact information for scheduling and other important updates.

Regional Breakdowns NATM consultants look to schedule multiple members in the same region at the same time to help save on travel costs and ensure NATM is able to see members prior to their certification date expiration. As a result, NATM member companies in the same region have the same verification dates. NATM also schedules new member CVP consultations into groupings with other members in their region and on a similar certification timeline to help effectively manage travel schedules. This regional grouping is vital to NATM seeing its more than 500 trailer manufacturer members every two years while maintaining cost-effective membership fees. As a result, the NATM Board of Directors has adopted a policy, found in the CVP Policies and Procedures, that NATM member companies who deny or otherwise don’t respond to a request to schedule a consultation, must pay a $750 fee (for domestic consultations) for NATM to visit at another time.

› › › ›

Under 10,000 GVWR and under 80 inches wide; Under 10,000 GVWR and over 80 inches wide; Over 10,000 GVWR and over 80 inches wide; and Over 10,000 GVWR with a rear underride required.

For each category a company manufactures a trailer in, the consultant will inspect at least one trailer within that category. NATM consultants use an online application to assist with these consultations, will take pictures of the trailer, and check to make sure it meets the requirements of the CVP. The consultant will also ask some administrative questions to accurately track information relating to NATM members for use in advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill. Following the trailer inspection, the NATM consultant will either work with the member on-site to go through the CVP findings, or if time does not permit, the consultant will look to schedule a video conference call to walk through the findings and any resulting corrections needed.

Failed CVP Consultations and Next Steps If the company receives their CVP report and discovers they have initially failed, no need for alarm. Roughly 65% of CVP consultations uncover at least one item that must be corrected before a member can pass their consultation. Any member that receives a failed report has 60 days from their consultation to correct any failed items in the CVP report. NATM request the member provide documentation or pictures indicating the failed items have been corrected. If you need additional time to correct any failed items, a member can request a 60-day extension to have more time to make corrections. However, failure to correct these items can lead to termination of membership.

Passed Members and Decal Purchases Once a member has corrected any failed items or outright passed theCVP consultation, they will receive a pass packet from the NATM consultant. This packet will include the completed consultation report along with any pictures taken of trailers, ready-to-use marketing materials relating to the NATM Decal, and a document indicating their certification with the NATM CVP.

Expectations During a Consultation

Regular members must purchase a minimum of 100 decals during the two-year period between their certification dates. Failure to make this minimum purchase of decals will lead to a $750 consultation fee being charged for the consultation.

Upon arriving at a member facility, the consultant will determine if the company manufactures trailers in the following categories:

If you have any questions about the CVP process, please contact Technical Director Alex Stowe at Alex.Stowe@natm.com. ■

Nurturing the Next Generation of Manufacturers:

Vermeer’s Child Care Center By The National Association of Manufacturers News Room A new study by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute says 2.1 million jobs could be unfilled by 2030 because of the gap in manufacturing skills. Read more about the study at https://www.nam.org/2-1-million-manufacturing-jobs-couldgo-unfilled-by-2030-13743/?stream=workforce. Nationally, 4.1% of women quit their jobs in January, reportedly because of COVID-19 related child care disruptions (read more at https://www.nam.org/the-direct-link-between-childcare-and-women-workers-16242/?stream=workforce).

equipment and Global Pavilion. “It’s a place where they get excited about all the disciplines of STEM,” Guess said. Meeting a community’s need: The center, which remained

Issues in child care are affecting the industry in numerous ways, but companies are seeking solutions. In 2012, Vermeer management realized it had been hearing the same refrain from team members for some time: There was a shortage of available, high-quality child care in the Pella, Iowa, area, and it was complicating parents’ work schedules. Workers’ challenges are the company’s challenges: Rather than respond with a collective shrug, the company recognized there was a problem—and it vowed to find a solution.

“Especially with early morning shifts, you heard a lot about people leaving their children at a neighbor because parents had to be at work before the bus came or school started,” Vice President of Operations Mindi Vanden Bosch, a third-generation Vermeer family member, recalled. “We put a task force together and brainstormed. Over the next year and a half, we built the Yellow Iron Academy, Vermeer’s early childhood education center. Every answer from employees since has been, ‘It’s been a game-changer.’” Not just care, but education, too: The Yellow Iron Academy, which gets its name from the company’s yellow products, isn’t just a nod at child care. With day-to-day operations run by award-winning third-party child care services provider Bright Horizons, it is a full-fledged center led by qualified professionals, and it aims to ready children for academia—and eventually, careers. “We’ve had teachers say, ‘Wow, these Yellow Iron kids are coming in with a strong readiness to learn,” said Vermeer Vice President of Human Resources Kate Guess, whose own children attended the center. “Yellow Iron Academy is taking the first steps to encourage kids to consider STEM careers like those in manufacturing,” Guess said. During Engineering Week, Vermeer professionals come in and talk to the center’s older kids about their jobs as engineers. The kids take regular field trips “across the road” to Vermeer’s facilities to see its museum, 26

open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, has achieved its intended goal of providing parents with top-of-the-line supervision and education while alleviating worry about having to cobble together care solutions for the next shift. Yellow Iron Academy isn’t just for Vermeer kids, though. While Vermeer team members and others with a connection to the company (grandparents, for example) receive discounted care rates, the center “is for the whole community,” Vanden Bosch said. “There is a need for child care in the area and across the entire state.”

Out of the approximately 130 kids at Yellow Iron Academy, about 75 have Vermeer connections, Guess added. Filling in school gaps: One of the most appreciated aspects of Yellow Iron Academy is its offering of before and after care, or programs prior to and following the school day. The center opens at 5:30 a.m. and is a pick-up and drop-off point on local school bus routes, so Vermeer team members don’t have to worry about school transportation for their children. www.NATM.com

Other Vermeer team member benefits: Vermeer offers its team members several other differentiated, highly soughtafter benefits. These include an onsite health care clinic and pharmacy, where both doctor visits and prescriptions are more cost effective than they are elsewhere, and a chaplaincy program. Both team members and their dependents are eligible to use the clinic and the pharmacy (features Vermeer has offered for 25 years) and many do. Vermeer has multiple chaplains across the company’s locations. These chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to “support the emotional needs of the team,” Vanden Bosch said. “It is without question one of the things our team members most value.” Child care advice for other manufacturers: “Child care is hard right now,” Vanden Bosch said. “Businesses have to go into it with the belief that it’s an investment in the workforce of today and tomorrow, knowing that there will likely be some costs they won’t recoup. But it’s one of the most viable ways to create a workforce.” ■

NATM Hires Scott Simons as Membership Outreach Specialist By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

Introducing Scott Simons The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is excited to announce Scott Simons joined the staff as the membership outreach specialist in April. In this position, Simons’ focus will be to grow membership in the organization and support retention of existing members. Scott will be responsible for overseeing NATM’s recruiting efforts, and focusing on meeting with prospective members and dealer affiliates. “NATM created the membership outreach specialist position this year as part of its strategic plan to grow the NATM Dealer Affiliate Program and membership overall,” said NATM Executive Director Kendra Ansley. “This is an exciting expansion of our team and the future of NATM. Scott’s background in sales in the utility equipment realm will serve him well as he meets with dealers and trailer manufacturers across the country. In his first month, Scott was already able to leverage existing industry relationships and we’re excited to see his value add over time.” Scott received his bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in business from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. He has worked in sales since 2014 and spent the last three years working for Triple C Manufacturing, Inc., focusing on the sale of cable and reel handling utility equipment. Member Spotlight

Maine Trailer Inc. By Erin Mohwinkle, NATM Marketing Coordinator

When asked about his National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) membership, Rod Hathaway, chief operating officer, Maine Trailer Inc. says, “I put a lot of value in networking and the NATM networking as a dealer affiliate has put a new perspective on this activity for me. “I tend to have a greater respect for those manufacturers that have made the NATM commitment for their business and have taken that commitment to a higher level of quality in building trailers. Those of us who have been in the industry for a while have seen the loads of trailers arriving and had issues with quality the minute they rolled off the truck. So having that NATM Decal means a lot to me and we speak to it during our customer presentations as well.”* Founded in Bangor, Maine in 1985, Maine Trailer Inc. has been working hard for the consumer for 37 years and continues to focus on bringing the customer great value, with trailers that fit their needs all while keeping the pace with the ever-changing technology and newest components. Maine Trailer does work with a lot of government agencies however they tend to find their “sweet 30

spot” in meeting the everyday needs of the homeowner, contractor and landscapers. Education and communication are key to safety and selection of a trailer for each customer’s needs. Hathaway said throughout the years he has seen the customer become much more educated. The consumer has an idea of what they are looking for and are asking more direct, technical questions leading to a better match. As a dealer, Maine Trailers Inc. knows quality is very important but being able to present the customer with a good value that is right for the job is most significant and rewarding.

“Taking a customer's needs and being a good listener helps us match the need with the correct trailer,” said Hathaway. “Then having them reach back out to me and say thanks—that is a big incentive for me. That is a huge plus as we have had customers return and ask for that same trailer when considering a replacement.” www.NATM.com

While it helps that the customer comes better prepared for their purchase, Maine Trailers Inc. also focuses on the informational growth of the team and company as a whole. Hathaway sees the importance of networking and learning from other like-minded leaders in the industry. Attending trade shows and networking activities with dealers around the country has proved important to their growth and success in the industry. What started as a side activity has transformed into a trailer sales leader. By sticking to the basics and investing in the intellectual and financial growth of their employees, they have been able to focus on bringing on quality brands and transform the business into a regional one-stop shop for customers with sales, rentals, service, parts, and registrations. Though Hathaway sees himself retired, he feels confident that in the next 10 and even 20 years Maine Trailers Inc. will continue its vision toward the future generations of employees and offering more trailers, more service, and more parts. ■

According to Rod Hathaway, Chief Operating Officer, Maine Trailer Inc., Maine has a national reputation as a low-cost provider of the trailer license plate. The next time you’re on the road, look at the semi-trailers you safely pass and notice the license plate. A significant number of trailers are registered and titled in Maine. “We have been appointed a Statutory Agent for the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to work as an agent for our BMV, therefore we provide a registration and license service to fleets, contractors, and in some cases homeowners who want an alternative source for registering their trailer(s),” Hathaway said. *Please note, NATM’s decal indicates the manufacturer has successfully completed the NATM Compliance Verification Program, which seeks to ensure manufacturers have the processes in place to meet applicable federal regulation and select industry standards.

MFG Day 2022 Set for October 7 By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), an initiative of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), is set for Oct. 7, 2022, with events continuing throughout the month. MFG Day is a near-decade-long initiative that provides awareness of the industry and helps solve the workforce shortage that plagues manufacturing. Over the last few years, the trailer manufacturing industry has been increasingly vocal about workforce challenges, and MFG Day is the perfect way to be part of the solution. The initiative encourages companies and educational institutions across the country to open their doors to students, educators, parents, and their communities by hosting events or sharing information online. If you are interested in registering an event, visit www.creatorswanted.org/register-event. MFG Day also addresses the misconception that manufacturing industries are dark, dirty and dangerous. The greatest influence on perception is personal experience and providing opportunities for interaction between manufacturers and the community “helps show the reality of modern manufacturing careers,” says the Manufacturing Institute. MFG Day has a real, measurable impact on the public’s perception of the industry. Seventy-two percent of MFG Day participants believe manufacturing provides an interesting

36

July/August 2022

and rewarding career after the event. In addition, the hashtag #MFG20 had almost 95 million impressions. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain visibility for your company and mission as well as shape the public’s opinion of the industry. This is a chance for manufacturers to come together to overcome the collective challenge of the workforce shortage. The Manufacturing Institute can help with the planning and hosting of events such as tours, round tables, press conferences, educational and job fairs. When planning such events with the help of the Institute or on your own, it is important to consider how interactive you want the event to be and how big the audience is. These factors will inform what platform you use, such as Zoom or in-person events, and whether or not you want to introduce pre-produced content such as a tour of the facility. If you would like to give students the opportunity to interact directly with your company, you can partner with the Boys and Girls Club by reaching out to Partnerships@bgca.org or visiting www.BGCA.org. Initiatives like MFG Day are vital as the industry struggles to fill the 4 million manufacturing jobs that will be left open between now and 2030. For resources and information on MFG Day, visit www.creatorswanted.org/resources. There you can find marketing and hosting toolkits, information on MFG Day’s app, as well as on-demand webinars about MFG Day. ■

DEALER

NATM Dealer Affiliate Program By Catie Rutkowski, NATM Membership & Events Coordinator Trailer dealers serve as the main point of contact during the sales process of many National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) member trailers. This group is also a key stakeholder in the fight to improve trailer safety, as it is in their best interest for their customers to purchase a trailer built by a manufacturer that has been verified to have the processes in place to build compliant trailers and be happy with their purchase. As a result, NATM created the NATM Dealer Affiliate Program. Increasing end-user awareness of the importance of the NATM Compliance Verification Program has consistently ranked as a top priority for trailer manufacturing members. Trailer manufacturers and NATM recognize that improving trailer safety can only be achieved when trailer dealers are knowledgeable about compliance, sell compliant trailers, and are able to educate end-users about safe trailering practices. However, with businesses to run, trailer dealers need access to information and resources to make this process easier. Enter the NATM Dealer Affiliate program.

The NATM Dealer Affiliation is $150 annually and affiliates experience a host of benefits, with an emphasis on education and resource access. The Dealer Affiliate program includes the following benefits: NATM Dealer Affiliates also can attend NATM’s 2023 Convention & Trade Show in Fort Worth, Texas for free through the New Attendee Promotion. Dealers: Take Advantage of Free Registrations & Room Nights at 2023 Show By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is excited to welcome trailer dealers back to the 2023 NATM Convention & Trade Show in Fort Worth, Texas Feb. 1416, 2023. For the second year, NATM is offering the “New Attendee Promotion” to offset costs for dealers attending the show. NATM Dealer Affiliates are eligible for two complimentary full registrations, two complimentary spouse/ partner registrations and two free hotel room nights per company (while available for first-time attendees)! To apply for the New AttendeePromotion, contact Catie Rutkowksi at Catie.Rutkowski@natm.com or (785) 272-4433. NATM has been committed to trailer safety for more than 30 years. While NATM has long worked with trailer manufacturers, industry suppliers, and service providers, trailer safety can only be improved through dealer interaction and consumer education. Expanding the Association’s base to include dealer affiliates and inviting dealers to attend the annual Convention & Trade Show is the logical next step in improving trailer safety. The NATM Convention & Trade Show is the annual trade show for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. With more than 1,000 trailer manufacturer and supplier attendees per year and growing, this "must attend" event provides education, and networking for those in the industry. The 2022 sold-out trade show boasted 231 booths, which gave

42

July/August 2022

attendees a variety of products and services to view. The Association’s purpose is to have open lines of communication, increase trailer safety awareness, and provide dealers with the education and information they have long requested from NATM. NATM has worked diligently with committees, trailer manufacturers, industry suppliers, and dealers to create a path of inclusion for dealers.

New in 2023, dealers are welcome during all hours of the trade show to shop for components, materials, and service providers. There will be no trailers on exhibit. Dealers will be invited to attend all regular workshops and technical forums, as well as the Awards Reception on Tuesday. Please note: Dealers are not able to attend the Tee Off Convention Top Gold event or PAC Reception. Online registration will open mid-September. NATM looks forward to seeing you in Fort Worth, Texas! For more information about the Convention & Trade Show or the NATM Dealer Affiliate program, contact NATM Assistant Director Meghan Ryan at Meghan.Ryan@natm.com or (785) 272-4433. ■

Felling Trailers, Inc. Announces Beneficiary of 2022 Trailer for a Cause Sauk Centre, MN – March 23rd, 2022 – Felling Trailers will be hosting its tenth annual Trailer for a Cause online auction of an FT-3 Utility trailer to benefit a nonprofit organization. Felling Trailers' goal is to bring awareness to various nonprofits that are making a difference by donating 100% of the winning bid from the auction to a different nonprofit each year. The previous Trailer for a Cause auctions have raised over $30,000 for nonprofit organizations such as SOMN – Special Olympics Minnesota, Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Lymphoma Research Foundation, and Minnesota Fire Fighters Foundation, to name a few. Felling Trailers, Inc. has selected Eagle’s Healing Nest as the 2022 Trailer for a Cause auction beneficiary. Eagle's Healing Nest provides a place of peace and healing for veterans struggling with issues ranging from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, depression, years of homelessness to addiction. "Our country's veterans' decision to sacrifice their time with family and friends, careers, and safety to train and respond when our country calls demonstrates courage and bravery that deserves respect from its beneficiaries," said Brenda Jennissen, President/CEO of Felling Trailers. "Having about 20 veterans on our team and being founded by a United States Air Force veteran makes it even more personal, and we're honored to give back to Eagle's Healing Nest to care for our country's heroes and meet their needs." A late Summer 2022 auction is being planned for Trailer for a Cause. Leading up to the auction, Felling Trailers will work with Eagle’s Healing Nest to generate awareness about the invisible wounds of war that our veterans carry. According to the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report | September 2021, 6,261 Veterans died by suicide in 2019. Eagle’s Healing Nest provides veterans, military members, and their families with a place to heal with honor. "We want them to heal from whatever brought them to the Nest, overcome all obstacles, find their purpose, and make plans for their purpose/ future,” said Melony Butler, founder of Eagle’s Healing Nest. Eagle’s Healing Nest is located in Sauk Centre, MN, on 124 acres with 24 buildings, originally Minnesota Home School for Girls from 1911-1967 and then a coeducational model as the Minnesota Home School until 1999. Veterans and volunteers operate the healing center. No government funding is received. "The programs have been created by the veterans and what they felt they needed,” said Melony. “The veterans here come from all across the country, from a failed system, active duty, hospitals, jail, commitments, we don't tell them how long they can be here. They stay as long as they need to heal." Services include a mental health clinic specializing in accelerated resolution therapy, outpatient substance abuse programs, art and rock studios, welding shop, Stable Foundation Ministry (equine program), Project Delta (service dog program), Welcome Home Vet for those ready to transition, “soar" the Nest, and much more. Since Eagle's Healing Nest opened its doors in 2012, thousands of veterans and their families have been helped, between those who have resided there and the Nest's outreach programs. Over the 9-1/2 years the nest has been in existence, the veterans and volunteers have renovated twenty-one of the twenty-four buildings onsite. When the last three www.NATM.com

buildings are completed, the Nest will have doubled its available capacity from the current 90-100 veterans. ■ About the Eagle’s Healing Nest Eagle's Healing Nest - Healing Veterans, Soldiers, and Families from invisible wounds of war from the inside out! Former Music Tech Entrepreneur Acquires $20 million Worth of Manufacturing Assets Nashville, Tenn. – Garrison Snell, former owner of marketing agency Gyrosity Projects and music technology Crosshair Music, acquired $20 million worth of manufacturing businesses across Tennessee and South Carolina under family office Snell Ventures, which includes NATM member company New Deal Trailer Parts. After Gyrosity Projects was acquired by The Stadiumred Group in 2018, Snell founded Snell Ventures to deploy capital into real estate, hospitality and manufacturing. Snell Ventures first acquired two Tennessee-based manufacturing businesses in July 2020. In June 2021, Snell Ventures added another holding based in South Carolina to the group. "Manufacturing has become a love of mine over the past few years. We are very interested in ensuring that jobs in the classic American trades remain and grow into the next generation. We're excited to commit capital to this vertical and take world class manufacturing plants into the next generation,” Snell said.

In an industry where aging founders/owners have limited options for continuing their businesses after retiring, Snell Ventures focuses on retaining jobs and improving the quality of employees’ lives spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. “We believe creating jobs, creating low prices for society and providing improvement opportunities for our employees and their families are the highest callings a corporation can pursue,” Snell added. Snell Ventures currently employs 110 people across Tennessee and South Carolina. The family office owns over 300,000 square feet of industrial real estate and is one of the primary suppliers of boat, horse and utility trailer suspension and tie-down equipment in America. The three manufacturing holdings include a 112-year-old bearing manufacturer, a 78-year-old metal stamping plant and a 49-year-old contract manufacturer serving Fortune 500 OEMs. ■

Nashville-Based Manufacturing Group New Deal Trailer Parts Hires New President, CEO Nashville, Tenn. – Snell Manufacturing, a Nashville-based family of industrial companies that includes NATM Member Company New Deal Trailer Parts, has hired industry veteran Charles “Chuck” Banker to lead the company’s three holdings in its next phase of development as President and CEO.

Nashville are both vibrant, growing and forward thinking. They're positive, solution-seeking and unifying people. I couldn't be more excited to join Snell Manufacturing and move to the great city of Nashville as I begin the next chapter of my personal and professional journey.”

Banker brings more than 15 years experience in manufacturing operational excellence and sales leadership to his new role. He began his career in manufacturing at Illinois Toolworks, ITW, a publicly traded industrial conglomerate consisting of 865 manufacturing and industrial companies. There Banker led a portfolio of five ITW companies with international facilities with combined revenues over $150 million. For all 10 years Banker was with ITW, he was awarded a Top 10 P&L and Culture performer position across all of ITW.

Snell Manufacturing currently employs 110 people across Tennessee and South Carolina. The family office owns over 300,000 square feet of industrial real estate and is one of the primary suppliers of boat, horse and utility trailer suspension and tie-down equipment in America.

Following his time with ITW, Banker was recruited by GT Schmidt, a 125-year old family owned manufacturing company, to lead a full strategy and sales turnaround. Most recently Banker oversaw the operational performance and leadership transition of Plymouth Tube Company, a familyowned, fifth generation pipe and tube mill conglomerate.

Snell Manufacturing is one of the portfolio holdings of Snell Ventures, a ministry-focused family office founded by Garrison Snell after exiting his music technology company in 2018.
