MODULAR BUCKING BARS

President’s Report

As I step into my role as President of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM), I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share my excitement for what’s ahead. I’ve been in the industry since 2010 when I started my career at M.H. Eby as a Product Design Engineer. I began attending the NATM Convention &Trade Show soon after and have since been involved in the Education, Finance, and Technical Committees. It’s an honor to serve such a dedicated and passionate group of professionals, and I look forward to working alongside you all over the next two years.

First, I want to acknowledge the 2025 NATM Convention & Trade Show in Nashville, Tennessee. This highly anticipated event was an incredible success, showcasing the best of what our industry has to offer. From building connections to sharing knowledge and innovative ideas, the Convention truly demonstrated the strength and unity of our industry. A special thank you goes out to the event sponsors—your support made the show possible. All revenue from the show goes directly to funding NATM’s programming, enabling us to continue providing

resources, advocacy, and education to our members.

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled about the upcoming NATM Trailer Expo which will be held Sept. 16-18, 2025, in Oklahoma City. This brand-new event is the result of hard work and vision from the Dealer Team, and it promises to set a new standard for innovation and collaboration in our industry. Be sure to save the date—this is one event you won’t want to miss.

Before I wrap up, I want to challenge each of you to make the most of your NATM membership. Whether it’s by attending events, joining committees, or using the available resources, there are countless ways to engage and grow. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it—and that benefits not just you, but our whole industry.

Thank you for being part of this incredible community. I’m looking forward to an exciting and impactful term as your president, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together. ■

Headquarters REPORT

After another cold winter, I am incredibly glad spring is finally starting to show up at headquarters. I also am thankful the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) was able to start another year with an amazing convention! Our 37th Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, was incredibly successful, and I am thankful to NATM Staff, exhibitors, and attendees for helping to bring our industry together to continue our mission of promoting trailer safety and the overall success of the trailer manufacturing industry. NATM welcomes in our new members of the Board (turn to Page 58 for more information) and new committee members (turn to Page 60 for more information).

Spring has historically signaled a boost in production and sales for this great industry, and focusing in on trailer safety will again be key as towers get back out on the road in full force. With the weather improving, the NATM Compliance Team will begin traveling to visit members again and conduct our compliance program consultations throughout the rest of the year. These consultations aim to help ensure trailers are compliant with our program and meet minimum standards relating to trailer safety. This year will also see NATM continue to collaborate with and provide resources to dealers to better reach end users and assist them with understanding how to safely use their trailers.

NATM has worked directly with our Trailer Dealer Committee to create several fantastic resources for dealers since they have been able to join NATM’s affiliate membership. Some benefits that have been created over the last year include NATM Connect, an online community forum where Dealer Affiliates can engage in discussion and receive feedback and resources from peers around the trailer industry. The Association also launched a knowledge center, a hub of industry-relevant resources for dealership owners and their staff. After listening to dealer feedback, NATM also launched the Call to Service Campaign, which highlights dealership service departments and focuses on the essential work they provide to our industry. NATM has partnered with Marsh & McLennan and Portfolio to create an NATM Warranty Program that can be sold by NATM Dealer Affiliates, helping increase dealership profitability. I

am incredibly proud of the work of NATM’s Dealer Team and the willingness of our Dealer Affiliates to share ways NATM can further incorporate dealers into our Association. I look forward to the inaugural NATM Trailer Expo in Oklahoma City September 15-18 to see all of this hard work come to fruition in helping to build a more robust and unified industry.

The Association’s efforts to grow consumer awareness about safe trailering and regulatory compliance doesn’t end with manufacturers and dealers. NATM will be hosting the eighth annual Trailer Safety Week, June 1-7, 2025. The Association is always looking for new Trailer Safety Week partnerships and expanding content curated by industry experts. Finding an opportunity to engage with the event is easy! NATM offers three levels of participation – Allies, Champions, and Partners. Allies sign up online and are provided a marketing kit with pre-crafted materials and resources for industry members to support Trailer Safety Week through social media posts and direct to customer communications. Champions take participation to the next level, committing to online posts and customer outreach, and are rewarded with brand promotion. The Partner level is the most intensive commitment to Trailer Safety Week and is reserved for industry experts who plan to curate content for Trailer Safety Week within their area of expertise. I hope you’ll join our effort to make roadways safer and sign up at TrailerSafetyWeek.com/interest.

2025 is off to a strong start and the Association has much in store for members and Dealer Affiliates this year! New committees are underway, with goals that will continue to propel the industry forward and ensure the continued accomplishment of the NATM mission. While the Association continues to grow and expand, the staff works to educate our members and affiliates about all the resources available to them. ■

CONTRACTOR’S CHOICE

New Federal Department Seeks to Change How Government Operates

In November 2024, President Donald Trump announced the formation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new initiative to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” With Elon Musk as its lead, DOGE was created to “provide advice and guidance from outside of Government” and “partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.” While much has changed about DOGE’s approach since its announcement, its mission to increase government efficiency remains the same.

Musk’s DOGE revolves around three major categories of reform: “regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions, and cost savings.” Additionally, its leader wants to focus on “driving change through executive action based on existing legislation rather than by passing new laws” with the U.S. Constitution as their “North Star for reform.”

A key issue area that DOGE will continue to focus on is remote work for federal employees as it has been a priority of the Trump Administration and this initiative since the election (“requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don’t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn’t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home.”).

While many Democrats’ recent legislative histories align with

DOGE’s goal (i.e. attempts to make the government more efficient), Congressional Republicans were the first to embrace the DOGE efforts. In the House, Members have established both a caucus–chaired by Reps. Aaron Bean (FL-4), Pete Sessions (TX-17), and Blake Moore (R-UT), and a House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14), focused on the partnership between Congress and DOGE. Sen. Joni Ernst (IA) also launched a Senate DOGE Caucus in November 2024 with inaugural members Sens. John Cornyn (TX), Ted Budd (NC), Mike Lee (UT), Rick Scott (FL), Roger Marshall (KS), and James Lankford (OK).

President Trump has made clear that DOGE’s work would come to a close on or before July 4, 2026, as the Department’s “top goal” is to “eliminate the need for its [own] existence.” DOGE’s final act will likely be a set of recommendations or a report focused on increasing efficiency by cutting the federal government’s size and cost.

The effort to enact reforms related to government efficiency is not a novel concept, but the scope of the project is nonetheless worthy of attention. DOGE will attempt to change the way government operates, and will seek to eliminate entire programs and agencies, including those with jurisdiction over highway safety and surface transportation.

Interested parties should continue to monitor DOGE’s actions over the next year to determine how the Department and its recommendations could impact their federal strategies for the Trump Administration and 119th Congress. ■

Support the Industry Through Convention Sponsorships

As a not-for-profit 501(c)(6), the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) relies on its annual Convention & Trade Show to fund association programming. Revenue generated from the Convention is directly funneled back into member benefits, including government affairs representation and advocacy, the Compliance Verification Program, the creation of reputable safety resources and education, the establishment of the NATM Academy training program, and nationwide Trailer Safety Week efforts. The funds raised by the Convention are used to enhance trailer safety across the nation. It is thanks to the support of sponsors that NATM is able to offset costs for the Association, attendees, and ultimately the industry at large.

Sponsoring the NATM Convention provides exceptional brand exposure and visibility within the light- and medium-duty trailer manufacturing sector while demonstrating your commitment to the industry. If you’re looking to reach key decision-makers, this is the event to create a buzz!

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM), known as the resource for safety and compliance for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry, has published the 2024 edition of the Guidelines for Recommended Manufacturing Practices for Light- and Medium-Duty Trailers, also known as just Guidelines. This after a thorough annual review by NATM Staff and members of the Compliance Committee combing through the over 150 citations of the CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations) for updates since last year. This massive document takes the guesswork out of meeting federal requirements governing the manufacturing of trailers under 26,000 lbs. GVWR and is a benefit of NATM membership.

Building trailers to meet the federal regulations outlined in the NATM Guidelines is the law. But it can be very time-intensive for trailer manufacturers to research the numerous federal rules, regulations, standards, and accepted industry practices that govern trailer construction.

NATM addresses this by compiling the Guidelines for Recommended Manufacturing Practices for Light- and MediumDuty Trailers. The document consists of nearly 500 pages of laws, regulations, rules, standards, and industry best practices. While NATM’s Compliance Verification Program (CVP) focuses on federal regulation, the Association provides additional individual state trailering law information as well.

The 2024 edition of the NATM Guidelines will undergo minimal changes from this annual review process. Most updates to the CFRs focused on shortening the titles of the citations, while the specific language remains largely the same compared to last year, when significant updates were made to the FMVSS 223 (pages B8-1 thru B8-9) and 224 (B8-10 thru B8-12) regulations regarding rear impact guards and protection. The NATM Warning Labels section (B9-10 thru B9-14) was also updated

to reflect more offerings available to affix to your product.

Members report substantial time savings by utilizing the Guidelines, particularly on the topics of lighting and reflectors, VIN and data plates, gross vehicle weight ratings, and state brake requirements.

While the Guidelines focus on U.S. regulations, many may have an interest in Canadian compliance. For more information, visit Transport Canada’s website at www.tc.gc.ca/en/transport-canada.html.

NATM assists its trailer manufacturing members in avoiding costly fines and decreasing liability related to trailer compliance through the NATM CVP. The CVP is an unbiased, third-party audit of the trailer manufacturing process and uses the Guidelines as the backbone for the program. The CVP provides biennial on-site consultations to trailer manufacturers and technical assistance throughout the entire process to ensure companies are manufacturing trailers consistent with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Standards, and other industry best practices.

Once a trailer manufacturer has successfully passed the Compliance Verification Program, the company is able to purchase NATM Decals and market their company’s dedication to fulfilling their safety requirements by participating in an unbiased, third-party audit of their trailers.

Threshold Tips for Surviving a Federal OSHA Inspection

With maximum limits for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) penalties increasing every year – currently over $16,000 for serious/other than serious citations and more than $160,000 for a repeat and willful – employers in the trailer manufacturing industry must be trained on their rights in the event federal OSHA1 arrives at their facility.

What to do When OSHA Arrives

OSHA can enter your worksite in two ways: either with a warrant, where a judge or magistrate determines the scope of an inspection, or with your consent, when you determine the scope and direction of the investigation. And we nearly always recommend permitting a consent-based inspection. This option gives you control of the inspection, including when and where the OSHA inspector visits your facility.

and OSHA can use this information to form a citation.

Speaking to OSHA on the first day of an inspection can lead to careless errors, prevent time for adequate preparation, and much worse, could lead to a criminal referral in certain situations. Thus, on that first day, supervisors should be trained to be professional while requesting that any substantive questions be asked during a formal interview with OSHA, which can be scheduled after you have time to prepare for and understand the facts surrounding the basis of the inspection.

During the opening conference (when OSHA first arrives to discuss the purpose of the inspection), you should be professional and courteous with the inspector, but you should also politely assert your rights, especially when discussing the scope of the inspection. And this article provides the most important things employers can do in support of those rights with an emphasis on four threshold tips to help prevent citations, minimize the penalties issued, and narrow the scope of OSHA’s inspection.

The First Threshold Tip: Don’t Allow Supervisor Interviews on Inspection Day

Don’t permit any manager or supervisor interviews by OSHA on the day the agency arrives. Without a warrant or subpoena, the agency cannot compel you to do anything. By preventing same-day interviews, the inspection can proceed based solely on your narrowly tailored consent, and OSHA has to conduct its inspection within the parameters of that consent.

Why No Supervisor Interviews on the Day OSHA Arrives?

The actions – or words – of your supervisors can bind your company, and this pertains to any employee in a position to hire, fire, discipline, or lead work. If the supervisor speaks, they speak on behalf of the company

If Not Right Away, Then When Will Supervisor Interviews Occur?

OSHA generally has six months to conduct an inspection from the time it opens the investigation. Although it certainly is not a good practice to make OSHA wait months for supervisor interviews, you should ensure you have taken all necessary steps including fully preparing the witness and determining whether a supervisor needs their own counsel. This practice will significantly diminish the likelihood of receiving a citation and/ or will decrease the number of citations issued.

The Second Threshold Tip: Watch What Documents You Provide Inspection Day

Don’t give federal OSHA any documents other than your OSHA 300 logs, 300A summaries, 301 forms, and relevant safety data sheets (SDS) on the first day of the inspection. Providing additional documents on the day of the inspection could lead to significant concerns you can otherwise easily avoid.

What Documents Must We Provide to OSHA on the Day of the Inspection?

The Motor Vehicle Body and Trailer Manufacturing industry (NAICS Code 3362) is not exempt from OSHA’s recordkeeping requirements, therefore, most employers with more than 10 employees must keep track of injuries and illnesses on an OSHA 300 log. Employers must also keep a summary of the injuries and illnesses that occur on an OSHA 300A form and keep more detailed information about each injury on a 301 form. These three documents – the OSHA 300 log, 300A, and 301 – must be provided to OSHA within four business hours of the agency’s request.

Relevant SDS (e.g., those concerning chemicals that relate to a complaint, referral, or accident that forms the basis of the OSHA inspection) must be provided to federal OSHA within a reasonable amount of time because they must be readily accessible to employees in the workplace. If you can’t find them, or don’t provide them to OSHA on the day of the inspection, they are not readily accessible – and thus you can be cited for such failure. (NOTE: Even though these documents must be given to OSHA fairly quickly, you should still take the time to review carefully prior to giving them to an agency that can cite you for deficiencies.)

Aside from the documents noted above, there is generally no requirement for you to give federal OSHA any other documents within a certain period. Instead, you should simply request from OSHA an electronic list (to memorialize and confirm exactly what is requested) of documents outlining what they are seeking. Rushing to hand documents over to OSHA during the opening conference could lead to mistakes.

When Should You Produce the Other Documents?

Although it certainly is not a good practice to make OSHA wait months for requested documents, you should ensure you have taken all necessary steps before providing the requested documents, including having counsel carefully review them, ensuring all responsive documents are provided, protecting proprietary, confidential and privileged information, objecting to requests outside the scope of the inspection, and properly bates labeling each document produced. This practice will significantly diminish the likelihood of receiving a citation and will likely decrease the number of citations issued.

The Third Threshold Tip: Escort Inspector Straight to and From the Inspection Area

Take the OSHA inspector straight to and straight from the area of the referral, complaint, or even the pertinent area of an emphasis program inspection. OSHA inspections are subject to the plain view doctrine, which means that you can be cited for each violation an OSHA inspector observes while at your facility – and you never know what safety violations could be discovered in real time during the walkaround portion of the inspection. Thus, supervisors should be trained to limit the area seen by taking the inspector directly to and from the area at issue in the inspection.

Where Can OSHA Go in Your Facility During an Inspection?

In nearly every state (California generally excluded), an OSHA inspector can only visit the portions of your facility that are pertinent to the complaint, referral, and emphasis program on which the inspection is based. Keep OSHA to that scope.

Take them directly to the area of the facility relating to the basis of the inspection, and nowhere else. This includes, when reasonable and appropriate, driving them to the back of your facility and entering through a remote entryway to view only pertinent areas. Everything OSHA sees during an inspection is fair game. Whether it is your maintenance employee not wearing their safety glasses or a damaged or unilluminated exit sign, OSHA can and will cite you for it. There is absolutely no reason to take the OSHA inspector on a field trip to non-pertinent areas of the facility. In addition to the risk of further citations, this decision will also lead to a loss of your time and resources, as the inspection likely will take much longer than if narrowed.

The Fourth Threshold Tip: Hazardous Activity in Plain View During Inspection

Supervisors should make sure employees are refraining from any high hazardous activities occurring while OSHA is present, including operating powered industrial trucks, working from heights or in trenches, operating cranes, or using hazardous chemicals. High hazard activities will draw the attention of inspectors and could prolong or redirect the focus of the inspection, leading to additional citations.

Why Not Have Hazardous Work Activities Occurring During OSHA’s Visit?

OSHA inspections are 4th Amendment searches subject to the constitutional “plain view” doctrine. While walking through your workplace, any violation that an inspector sees may result in additional citations or expand the scope of the inspection to include portions of your safety program not within the original focus of the investigation.

You are not attempting to hide anything from the inspector. However, controlling hazards in your workplace in realtime – those occurring while you are walking around the site with the OSHA inspector – is nearly impossible. To minimize the chances of OSHA adding additional citations or expanding the scope of the inspection, limit the number of potentially hazardous activities taking place at the site while an agency representative is present.

More Than Just Another Sticker: Members Express Support for NATM Decal

The mission of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is to promote trailer safety and the success of the trailer manufacturing industry through education and advocacy. The most visually prominent way a member company can show their commitment to trailer safety is with the NATM Decal.

“The NATM Decal is like a symbol of trust for a trailer, signifying its quality and safety compliance,” said Andy Derr, NATM President and Design Engineer with M.H. Eby. “When you apply the Decal, you’re not merely applying another ‘sticker’ to the trailer; instead, you’re communicating to consumers the paramount importance of trailer safety. Adding the NATM Decal implies that the trailer has undergone a comprehensive review by a team of compliance experts, ensuring its readiness for safe towing on the road.”

“We really put a lot of stock into having that decal prominently displayed at our facility. It typically is very prominently displayed on our entryway as well as trailers,” said Rod Hathaway, Chief Operating Officer of Maine Trailer Inc. “I’m very proud of it. I promote the heck out of it whenever I can.”

NATM adopted the first iteration of the Decal in 1990 for Members to promote their membership. With the establishment of the Compliance Verification Program (CVP) in 2002, the Decal came to mean even more, and NATM created a new red, white, and blue circular decal to draw attention to Members who had voluntarily participated in and passed a compliance consultation.

“The Decal demonstrates that the trailer they’re considering has been verified by a third party to at least meet the minimum safety requirements of the road,” Derr said. “In addition to lights and reflectors, the inspection also ensures that the manufacturer is following safe practices regarding capacities, wheels and tires and other aspects of the trailer.”

While compliance with federal regulations is the law, the commitment to having a third party verify compliance is no small undertaking. The choice to join NATM and expend resources to verify compliance deserves recognition. Communicating that level of commitment to dealers and endusers can be one tool for increasing the marketability of trailers.

“That’s been a big deal for me and my sales team,” Hathaway said. “This is our 39th year in business, so we’re not new to the

industry, yet, we have a lot of younger staff members, and we’ve always promoted that Decal as being meaningful. It’s something that we point out to our consumers that this product that they’re buying does meet some industry standard and that does have value. We want to be recognized for selling that value.”

The NATM Decal is an outward symbol of safety and its recognition continues to grow. With the recent growth of the Dealer Affiliate Program and nationally recognized Trailer Safety Week, trailer safety education continues to expand and with it so does knowledge of the importance of the red, white, and blue NATM Decal. That small circle allows dealers and consumers the peace of mind of not needing to be experts on regulatory compliance but instead allows them to simply focus on selecting the right trailer for their needs and hitting the road.

“I think that Trailer Safety Week has certainly brought a lot of recognition to that decal. Something that we’re tried to promote via our social media is that safety is an important aspect for an industry that’s kind of under the radar,” Hathaway said. “A person that’s not used to buying a little 5’ x 10’ trailer so they can haul their garden tracker from their home to their cottage – they should feel comfortable that we’ve researched and we’ve put a lot of faith in our manufacturers so that they can safety tow this product with a load, as specified, from point A to point B.”

“Many consumers are unaware that the trailer manufacturing industry is primarily self-regulated,” Derr said. “Consumers often assume that a manufacturer’s product complies with all road rules and requirements, and they might not realize that the trailer they’ve just purchased could lack essential safety features such as reflectors, lights, or conspicuity tape. The Decal communicates that they can rest assured that their new trailer has been built at a facility with the processes in place to meet all applicable federal safety standards.”

The NATM Decal also holds value beyond its symbolism for dealers and end-users. NATM regularly works with law enforcement on stolen trailer issues. As thieves tend to scratch off labeling and VIN numbers that would identify a

trailer, they often leave the NATM Decal attached. NATM has been able to connect law enforcement agencies all across North America with the manufacturer of the trailer to resolve these crimes because of the serialized decal. Further, the Decal allows small businesses and large businesses alike to access the resources made available through NATM via the scannable QR code found on each NATM Decal.

NATM’s Members work hard and spend valuable time and money to ensure they comply with the CVP. The NATM Decal is a visual, outward way members can show off this above-and-beyond commitment to road safety. One easy way to support this mission and make the Decal even more recognizable is to purchase Decals.

“We’ve always been very faithful and supportive of the NATM Decal. It means a lot. We try to instill a lot of confidence in our customer base that we’re selling a product that meets standards for our industry,” Hathaway said. “I think that there is tremendous value in knowing that this product has been fully vetted, that specifications are met, that inferior products aren’t used that may put safety or the lives of the people in the towing vehicle at risk – that to me is the most important aspect.”

“Members of the NATM are committed to manufacturing quality, safe trailers,” Derr said. “The organization has a growing number of resources for manufacturers and dealers to help keep all the trailers on the road safe and roadworthy. The NATM Decal communicates that the manufacturer supports the industry and is committed to maintaining the reputation that the NATM has built.”

Axles 101: Driving Trailer Knowledge Forward

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) kicked off the year right with January’s wellattended webinar, “Axles 101,” featuring Dexter’s Bill Snider. With over 39 years of industry experience, Snider is a wealth of knowledge, making him the perfect presenter to dive into this hot topic. Selected as a high-priority subject by NATM’s Education and Technical Committees, axles remain a cornerstone of trailer design and safety. Snider, who also presented on brake systems at the NATM Convention & Trade Show in Nashville, captivated attendees by sharing his expertise and practical insights on axle systems.

Breaking Down Axle Basics

The webinar began with a focus on axle basics, emphasizing the importance of understanding axle ratings and their role in ensuring trailer reliability. Participants learned about the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), which is determined by the weakest component in the system, such as bearings, axle tubes, or suspension. The session also covered the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), representing the total allowable weight of the trailer, including cargo, passengers, and the trailer itself. Additionally, the discussion highlighted hitch weight, the critical portion of the trailer’s load supported by the tow vehicle. Proper hitch weight varies depending on the hitch type, with recommendations of at least 10% of the trailer’s weight for standard trailers and 20-25% for fifth-wheel or gooseneck configurations.

Suspension Systems: Options and Innovations

The webinar also explored the various suspension systems available for trailers and their advantages in different

applications. Leaf spring suspensions, one of the most common types, are a durable and cost-effective option. They offer versatility in height adjustments with configurations like overslung (where the springs are mounted above the axle) for increased ground clearance or underslung (with springs mounted below the axle) for lower trailer heights.

Another option discussed was torsion suspension, which is known for its smooth ride and independent wheel travel. This system is particularly popular for smaller or lighter trailers that require a compact design. For trailers requiring superior shock absorption and adjustable ride height, air ride suspension was highlighted as a premium option, offering enhanced performance through load equalization and customizable ride dynamics.

Axle Specifications and Maintenance Tips

Next came the importance of specifying axles tailored to load requirements, trailer dimensions, and operational needs. Participants were introduced to tools like conversion kits, which simplify adjustments for trailer height.

Maintenance advice included proper torquing of U-bolts, alignment checks, and the use of cambered axles to reduce uneven tire wear.

Trailer Design and Alignment Insights

Trailer alignment was another major focus, with practical tips for preventing issues such as swaying and uneven weight distribution. Snider explained the impact of design elements, like axle spacing and hitch placement, on trailer performance.

Did You Know?

An interesting takeaway from the webinar was the critical role of equalizers in tandem and triple-axle trailer configurations. Equalizers distribute weight evenly across multiple axles, reducing stress on components and ensuring smoother rides. On tandem axles, equalizers balance loads between the two axles to minimize tire wear and maintain proper alignment. For triple-axle setups, the center equalizer takes on an even more significant role, helping stabilize the trailer while managing the increased complexity of weight distribution. Regular inspection and maintenance of equalizers are essential to keep trailers performing safely and efficiently.

Continuing the Conversation

cost efficiency and performance, as well as the most common mistakes manufacturers make that can impact the long-term performance or safety of a trailer. Resources were provided like Dexter’s product guides and training materials to deepen attendees’ knowledge.

NATM’s commitment to advancing education in trailer safety and design was evident throughout the event. With initiatives like this webinar, the Association continues to empower industry professionals with the tools and expertise needed to enhance trailer quality and performance.

Meet the NATM Dealer Committee Members: A Conversation with Shane Ehrsam

In July 2024, National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) Staff Members Andrea Boetticher and Izabella Chesney began a new series of interviews to learn more about the members of the 2024-2025 NATM Dealer Committee. NATM Staff is excited to be continuing this series of giving you an inside view of who represents NATM Dealer Affiliates. Staff got the opportunity to speak with Shane Ehrsam, who is based in Texas and owns North Texas Trailers.

Introduce yourself and how you came to the industry.

I did not grow up in the industry, unlike a lot of my peers. I really didn’t know the first thing about trailers up until just a few years ago. However, I did grow up in an entrepreneurial family.

I always knew I wanted to be a business owner, even though I didn’t know exactly what that would look like. After an 11-year career in business management and running large teams and overseeing multi-location operations in a B2B service business, I was laid off. At that point, I had the freedom and ability to pursue something new and I thought this would be a great opportunity to figure out how to become a business owner.

I initially started looking at franchises. I didn’t think of myself as an innovator or inventor of any kind. I wasn’t going to build the next great social media app or mouse trap, but I figured I could take an existing system, operate it well and ultimately grow and scale it. I started to learn about the whole idea of buying existing small businesses, buying a cash flowing business, and at the same time helping this whole wave of entrepreneurs and business owners that are baby boomers who are trying to figure out what retirement and business succession looks like for them.

I began to search for businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where I live and that’s what brought me to North Texas Trailers. I looked at a number of businesses and many other types of industries. I certainly did not set out necessarily to find a trailer business or a dealership. But the more I looked at this business, the more it made sense to me for a number of reasons.

In June of 2022, I was able to work out a deal with the folks who founded North Texas Trailers and give them the retirement and exit opportunity that they were looking for and then gain my entry into business ownership like I was looking for.

What are some things you have learned about the industry?

I think it’s safe to say that the industry itself is a bit behind the times and antiquated. But I think that also means there’s a lot of room for opportunity. There’s a lot of room for growth, and I think that it’s exciting to be in this industry now because I do think that we’re going to experience a wave of sophistication and modernizing of these businesses. I’m not some tech guru but there’s ways that we can accomplish what we’re trying to accomplish - giving customers a great quality product at a good price with great service and doing it in a more 21st century way.

The industry is primarily made up of small independent dealers that are mostly mom and pop, family-owned stores, which I love. I love networking and meeting other dealers and hearing all the different stories. Hearing from people who started their businesses or started as a technician or an entry-level employee and have worked their way up to GM or owner and are now running a very successful business and creating the American dream. I think that’s really cool.

On the flip side, I see the challenges in the business. Things got a little crazy during COVID with supply chain constraints and inflation. On the price side, you know everyone was happy there for a couple years and now things seem to be right sizing, making it more challenging.

What is the most rewarding thing about what you do versus your career before North Texas Trailers?

Overall, I love what I do. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to having a so-called normal job, working for somebody else. I think I’ll always want to be a business owner. I very much enjoy leading my team and working on projects to help make North Texas Trailers the best possible business it can be.

Being a business owner, you’re just so much closer. I have much more of an immediate and direct impact on my employees’ lives than I did in a big corporation. I also have so much more autonomy to do things the way I want to do them in the way I think is right. That was a big frustration coming from the corporate land where we made a lot of decisions based on next month’s quarterly earnings and the pressures that come with that.

Obviously, there is a lot of financial pressure to make sure my

business is successful, but I also get to make decisions that impact my employees’ lives that are best for them and best for the company. I get to create the culture of the business in a much more direct way and that is really rewarding. We have folks who have been with us for a long time, and I’ve implemented a lot of things to make their jobs better, more pay, benefits, hopefully making their job a little bit more efficient and satisfying, and it’s been great to see.

Regarding the changes you’ve made for your team, is there anything in particular that stands out as being particularly impactful?

On the benefits side, we expanded our bonus opportunities in a significant way. We added health benefits and a 401k program with a company match. Teaching my employees about what a 401k can do for them and having them think beyond just their next paycheck has been very impactful.

Another significant change has been to give my team more autonomy by loosening the guardrails around their decision making, more than they experienced in the past. And what I am finding is that people are taking advantage of that in a great way and thinking of ways that they can produce more for the company because they have been given that autonomy and ability to do that.

My philosophy is that if you focus on your employees, you are actually making things a lot better for your customers. Because if you have an engaged employee workforce that really enjoy what they do and has the autonomy to make things as good as possible for the customers, that there’s a natural buy-in there to ultimately help and serve the customers in the way that’s best for them. You know the old adage is “Customer is King” and all the focus for years has always been to focus on what the customers’ needs are, sometimes sacrificing the needs of the company or employees. I like flipping that on its head and focusing on the employees first. There is a level of trust involved, but the right team and the right employees embrace that mentality and work hard.

NATM is excited to see all the great things Shane Ehrsam will be doing on the committee! NATM also is looking forward to sharing more insights with members and Dealer Affiliates on who is representing the Dealer Affiliates and assisting in growing the Dealer Affiliate Benefit Program. As we welcome in the 2025-2026 Committee, keep an eye out for the next conversation with another Dealer Committee Member!

The association is excited to launch this campaign and give dealers a chance to showcase their service departments and shine a light on the crew that makes such a difference in their business.

NATM is thrilled to highlight The Trailer Guy, whose main specialty is service and doing honest work for their customers’ best interests. NATM got the opportunity to speak with husband and wife duo, Brandon and Denise Scholle, about their company and got the chance to dive deep into what makes their service department so unique!

About The Trailer Guy

Brandon was exposed to the trailer industry by starting a job at a local shop in Cincinnati while finishing up high school and

entering college. He stayed at that shop for about five years, assisting the owner and learning about the trailer industry while also seeing the potential it had. Working at a local shop offered Brandon unique opportunities to work with a variety of trucks, truck accessories, trailers, and much more.

He enjoyed the hands-on work and eventually went out on his own, working on trailers in his spare time as he worked a corporate job for over 10 years with GE Aviation. This meant long nights and weekends making it happen for his customers. As time went on, Brandon and Denise decided in 2021 to take the next steps and left their jobs to focus on their business full-time.

While The Trailer Guy can help you with all things trailer related, they specialize in trailer repair and parts for horse, boat, campers, and landscape trailers. They have grown their service-focused business from just Brandon and Denise to now having one full-time employee and one

part-time employee. The Trailer Guy pushes out between 600-700 trailers a year as a small shop. This is an exciting accomplishment and it shows their passion for growing and sharing the knowledge of the trailer industry with others.

What Makes Them Stand Out?

Brandon always has been focused on offering a different type of service to his customers, ensuring they leave with every problem fixed and have a safe trailer on the road. His hard work and dedication are what have set him apart over the years and what keeps the customers flowing in. Not only is he the owner but he is the one doing the work and making sure the quality is consistent every time by paying attention to detail and checking numerous times to ensure the best experience for his customers. The Trailer Guy is a business that solely focuses its time and services on trailers, this alone shows the dedication and passion for offering the best services to their customers.

The husband and wife duo are passionate about educating others on trailer needs and safety. Not only do they pay special attention to solving any trailer problems and concerns, but they also educate their customers. They walk them through

the process and are honest about the work that goes into it. If you make a call to The Trailer Guy, you are most likely to speak with Denise, who is extremely knowledgeable and educated in the trailer industry and can answer many of your trailer-related questions and concerns before you even book your appointment. Denise has worked alongside her husband learning the ins and outs of trailers and the industry. She is an invaluable source of information and is deeply involved in the trailer industry community. Not only that, but you also will find her regularly in the shop with the service technicians assisting with repairs.

Even on their days off, if someone from their community needs help or asks them a question, both Brandon and Denise are happy to share their expertise and trailer knowledge. The Trailer Guy’s passion for community, education, and the desire to give their customers the best services are some of the many things that make them stand out!

Along with getting to work together every day on their shared passions, the Scholles also find it rewarding to be a part of their community. They are heavily active in community events and make sure to interact with others around them while they are out and about.

While Brandon and Denise have a business specializing in trailers, they do a lot of things with trailers off the clock. From horses, boating, four-wheelers, and camping, they are using trailers just as much as their customers, if not more. This lifestyle has given them the opportunity to truly connect with their community and be involved on a deeper level.

The feedback, reviews, and kind words also are something they find rewarding, and it drives them to continue to do the best job they can – especially considering the extremely long nights and all the hard work that went into building the business that many people never saw. It makes it all worth it knowing their work is appreciated and seen. When they are out and about, and customers come up to them to say thank you and show their appreciation or share their

experience with another person is always a reward as well.

The future goals for The Trailer Guy are to hopefully one day get a bigger facility to accommodate a bigger vision along with being able to serve their community for generations on.

Myths vs Facts

Myth: It doesn’t matter what type of grease you use.

Fact: It does. Different applications have different types of greases. The Trailer Guy notes that there is a difference and to be mindful of the grease you are using.

Myth: The female behind the phone doesn’t know what they are talking about.

Fact: When you give The Trailer Guy a call, you’ll get the opportunity to speak with Denise who learned all about trailers alongside her husband and even assists with trailers in the shop. She is not just someone behind the desk scheduling your appointments, she is a woman of the trailer industry and has spent most of her life in it. She is capable and knowledgeable enough to speak with customers and assist them with all trailer questions!

NATM is excited to share The Trailer Guy’s story and showcase their awesome service-focused business! They truly go above and beyond for their customers, which shows in everything they do.

NATM Announces 2025 Trailer Expo Keynote Speakers

One of the top reasons to attend the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers’ (NATM) inaugural Trailer Expo is the exceptional education. The NATM Trailer Expo will offer attendees over 10 hours of education through top-notch keynote speakers, two tracks of industry-led workshops, peer-learning roundtable discussions, and quick hit demos and trainings. With an emphasis on content targeted at top level professionals in the trailer dealer industry, the educational offerings will present the best in the industry for leading trailer dealers executives. All the education is being planned by your peers in the dealer industry, with the NATM Dealer Committee leading the planning process for all the Trailer Expo education.

With that in mind, NATM has booked two phenomenal keynote speakers for the event, taking place Sept. 16-18, 2025, in Oklahoma City!

Mike Staver, Leadership Coach

Session Topic: How to Build a High-Performance Culture

Mike Staver is the author of “Leadership Isn’t for Cowards” and an internationally respected speaker, author, and coach. Staver takes noisy, often complex, leadership content and makes it immediately useful, digestible, and entertaining. In all Staver’s work, the goal is simple - helping leaders perform better and live better lives. To accomplish this, he uses counterintuitive perspectives, a storytelling style, and entertaining delivery that makes the often-challenging realities of work and life easier to absorb and put into practice.

Staver has degrees in business administration and counseling psychology. He is a certified speaking professional, and in

2022, was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame. Companies from Federal Express and Miracle Ear to Leading Real Estate Companies of the World and the Mayo Clinic have repeatedly invited him to contribute to the development of their leaders. Staver architected a training program ranked

No. 1 by Training Magazine on their 2018 Training Top 125 list, which recognizes organizations with the most successful learning and development programs in the world. That same program joined the Training Magazine Hall of Fame in 2019.

In the last 30 years, Staver has influenced over 200,000 people in ways that have not only transformed thinking and action but improved results. His message is grounded in the belief that leadership is about influence regardless of position, title, or power.

There’s more, but frankly while all of that took a lot of work the real work has been hard earned over the last 30 years in the trenches of businesses from health care to high-end security and guiding clients through a multitude of business struggles. Staver has seen it all and has taken those experiences and used them to help others build better lives and careers.

During Mike Staver’s session, How to Build a HighPerformance Culture, participants will learn:

› How to identify and apply their core values to their leadership

› How to align their behavior with what they say they believe

› How to be powerfully influential regardless of level of authority

› How to build accountability and improve efficiency

› How to Build a High-Performance Culture

Not-for-Profit Philosophy Shapes

NATM Trailer Expo Launching 2025

As the not-for-profit 501(c)(6) trade organization that brought you Trailer Safety Week, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is expanding its educational efforts and support to trailer dealers through the launch of the NATM Trailer Expo: The ultimate lightand medium-duty trailering event of the year. The first NATM Trailer Expo will take place in Oklahoma City, Sept. 16-18, 2025.

This event will bring together all key stakeholders of the light- and medium-duty trailer industry, including trailer dealers, trailer manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and automotive tow vehicle OEMs. The target audience to attend and walk through the Trailer Expo includes trailer dealers, as well as fleet and government purchasing agents.

The NATM Trailer Expo will, of course, feature an exposition of trailers under 26,000 lbs GVWR on the trade show floor. Additionally, suppliers and service providers that assist dealerships will also be welcome to exhibit. Booth sales for the 2025 Trailer Expo opened in the summer

of 2024. Information about the booth sales process and dates can be found on Page 55, but make sure to sign up for communications regarding the show at www.NATM.com.

Trailers with a Purpose: NATM Reinvesting Trailer Expo Profits for a Better Industry

As the leader in national towing safety efforts, dealers have long looked to NATM for resources for their customers and their businesses. Over the last decade, NATM has fielded frequent requests to close the gap that exists in the trailer dealer realm regarding reputable education, business resources, and self-governance. As requested, NATM is exponentially expanding its dealer support efforts, for more information turn to Page 36. To foot the bill for these new efforts, the NATM Trailer Expo was created.

Continued on Page 48

Continued from Page 47

Similar to NATM’s annual Convention & Trade Show held in February, which funds Association programming dedicated to trailer manufacturers, the NATM Trailer Expo will utilize the revenue generated from the event to fund dealer-specific programming and benefits. As a not-forprofit association, the profits generated from the Trailer Expo will be reinvested into Dealer Affiliate benefits and industry-wide programming such as Trailer Safety Week, the launch of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit National Trailer Safety Council, the NATM Academy, Dealer Connect network, and more. No other organization in the light- and medium-duty trailer industry utilizes booth sales, sponsorship dollars, and registration revenue to further nationwide trailer safety efforts and launch costly programming to assist trailer dealers.

The primary focus of NATM is directed toward generating benefits for its members and affiliates to further its mission to improve trailer safety. As a not-for-profit, NATM prioritizes the member and affiliate interests over its financial gains as it serves the entire light- and medium-duty trailer industry. The Association operates with a commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial environment for its members and affiliates rather than seeking profits for itself. This approach underscores NATM’s dedication to supporting and advancing the interests of the trailering community, reinforcing a collaborative and safety-driven mindset for all key stakeholders at every level.

Back to Our Roots: Returning to the Beginning

NATM was founded in Chickasha, Oklahoma, in 1987 when five livestock trailer manufacturers unified for better benefits. Nearly 40 years since its inception, NATM is returning to its roots with its first Oklahoma-based event geared specifically for trailer dealers. This event will celebrate the success, growth, and expansion the Association has had over the last four decades leading the industry. Returning “Back to Our Roots” in Oklahoma marks a fresh restart, a full circle, in programming in which NATM launches a new chapter for the trailer industry – this time incorporating trailer dealerships. The launch of The NATM Trailer Expo demonstrates NATM’s understanding of the importance of unifying for the greater good of the trailer industry – just like the five original founding member companies understood back in 1987.

Embracing a collective vision for advancing end-user towing knowledge, NATM is starting a new chapter of collaboration. The trailer industry is stronger together, and this unification is a major step forward in improving towing traffic safety at all levels, as well as supporting the profitability of its members and affiliates.

OKC: Where the Heartland Meets Cutting-Edge Technology

Oklahoma City’s tagline is, “Where the heartland meets cutting-edge technology,” which also is a fitting description of the trailer industry’s rural roots and its future incorporating technology to improve the industry at the manufacturing, sales, and end-user levels. Not only is OKC conveniently located in the heart of the nation, it sits amid the trailer manufacturing industry and lies within a three hours’ drive of Fort Worth, Texas, which has proven an ideal location for NATM’s programming and contributed to record-breaking success for its annual February Convention & Trade Show.

OKC offers an exceptional dining and drinking scene for offsite, after-hours networking with customers. Fine dining and steakhouses, craft breweries, trendy bars, and sophisticated cocktail lounges are scattered throughout the city, offering a vibrant nightlife for attendees to unwind and socialize after a long day at the NATM Trailer Expo. Trailer dealers,

manufacturers, and suppliers alike will have plenty of options to wine and dine their customers during the week of the show.

State-Of-The-Art Convention Center and Omni Host Hotel

The inaugural 2025 NATM Trailer Expo will be held at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, which was completed in 2020. This convention center is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility that stands as a testament to modernity and innovation. With its top-notch amenities, spacious meeting rooms, and expansive trade show floor, the OKC Convention Center will not only meet needs but exceed the highest of standards.

The Omni Oklahoma City Hotel is the host hotel for the event and is conveniently located directly across from the OKC Convention Center, which will host the event. Completed in 2021, the 17-story hotel offers luxurious guest rooms and dramatic views of the nearby Scissortail Park and the OKC skyline. Additionally, there

is a rooftop hotel pool with downtown city views and excellent onsite dining and bar options. Take time for R&R after a week of working the show floor at Omni’s onsite Mokara Spa.

The Omni Oklahoma City Hotel stands out as a pinnacle of beauty and modernity among the venues at which NATM has previously hosted. Renowned for its luxurious accommodations, and sophisticated design, the Omni offers a truly exceptional experience for attendees. The convenience of the neighboring hotel and exhibit hall locations cannot be beaten.

NATM has negotiated a hotel room block rate of only $230 per night, and the hotel reservation link will be live this winter. Please note, NATM will not authorize any group hotel room services to call you or to solicit your business! These third parties also use the NATM logo in their communications, so please ensure to book with those with emails ending in @natm.com.

Elevating Dealer Success Takes Center Stage in Programming

The NATM Trailer Expo will focus on elevating dealer success in the Educational Sessions. With a nearly four-decade track record, NATM has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to its members by providing exemplary support, valuable resources, and dynamic programming and will continue to offer such at the NATM Trailer Expo.

Understanding the evolving needs of its Dealer Affiliates, NATM conducted a comprehensive survey across the country to gain insights into the specific requirements of dealers. The findings underscore a shared goal among dealers to enhance profitability and elevate the end-user experience and knowledge. These crucial insights gleaned from discussions with dealers will serve as the foundation for the NATM Trailer Expo programming with a focus on elevating dealer success.

In her vast discussions and meetings with dealers, NATM Dealer Programming Specialist Andrea Boetticher has found that these dealerships are small businesses, often family-owned and their main focus is profitability. As a result, the in-person educational lineup will be geared towards increasing the profitability of dealerships. Profitability is not just determined by the sales process, but by overall business practices which NATM plans to assist with. Boetticher also has found that dealers want to meet with their peers, and NATM intends to

Participate in the Trailer Expo Location and Workshop Survey.

create business engagement groups and connect dealers with non-competitors to discuss challenges, solutions, and more.

NATM is soliciting feedback from Dealer Affiliates on what topics they want addressed with the in-person workshop lineup. To help curate the future of NATM Trailer Expo programming, participate in the Trailer Expo Location and Workshop Survey, scan the provided QR code. Looking Ahead: Fort Worth, Texas - October 6-8, 2026

The Association is looking ahead and already planning future NATM Trailer Expos in the coming years. Building on the success of previous events, the 2026 NATM Trailer Expo will be in Fort Worth, Texas, from Oct. 6-8, 2026. Mark your calendars now!

Texas, known for its booming trailer manufacturing industry, has proven to be an ideal location for NATM’s programming, contributing to record-breaking success. Its central location makes it convenient for NATM Trailer Manufacturer Members to drive in and exhibit their latest models. Additionally, the strategic location is perfect for dealers to visit and engage throughout the week. Board of Directors Announced for 2025-2028 Term

For 37 years, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) has been fortunate to be guided by committed, forward-thinking Boards of Directors. It is these visionary boards that pushed for the development of the Compliance Verification Program, determined the need for government affairs representation in Washington D.C., incorporated trailer dealers into the Association through the Dealer Affiliate program, and developed fiscal policies that ensured NATM had the reserves to weather recessions and even the pandemic.

NATM’s Board of Directors is comprised of 17 to 18 individuals (this variance in size is related to Board terms as dictated by the Bylaws), 12-13 trailer manufacturers, four suppliers or service providers to the industry, and one tow vehicle OEM. These individuals are nominated by their peers. Before advancing to the ballot, each nominee’s qualifications, including industry experience and participation in the Association, are reviewed by the Nomination Committee and a slate of candidates is prepared for election by the membership. This year also sees the addition of a

non-voting seat for an NATM Trailer Dealer Affiliate, as nominated and appointed by the Board of Directors.

Split into three classes with rolling term expirations, roughly one-third of Board seats are up for election each year. The 2025-2028 term of the NATM Board of Directors, as elected by the membership, will include the return of Andy Gehman (MGS Incorporated), Daniel Luby (BoatMate Trailers, Inc.), and Nathan Uphus (Felling Trailers).

Additionally, the membership has elected two new Board Members Heather Gonzales (Down to Earth Trailers) and Eric Kazmierzak (Laclede Chain Manufacturing Company).

These new Board Members will officially join their peers on Feb. 17, 2025. The Association is looking forward to continuing its work with these new and returning Board Members! As always, the NATM Board of Directors is interested in and open to member feedback. While members are encouraged to reach out to staff with ideas about how to improve the Association, Board Members are also available to the members to discuss! ■

Association Committees Gear Up for New Year

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is a not-for-profit directed entirely by its membership base and its elected representatives. NATM’s Committees serve a vital function in guiding the work of the Association. Committee members support the adaptation and evolution of the Association while seeing that the strategic vision established by the Board of Directors is being carried out.

Committee volunteers signed up in record-breaking numbers to serve in 2025. With over 80 individuals signed up to volunteer their time, nine committees with specific goals were established by the Executive Committee. These nine committees are Compliance, Convention, Dealers, Education, Finance, Government Affairs, Membership, Technical, and Technology.

Meeting from monthly to quarterly, these committees will be tackling big goals in 2025. These include, but are not limited to:

› Updating NATM’s Generic Owner’s Manuals

› Reviewing and updating NATM’s Investment and Reserves policies to ensure the Association is both prepared for the future and reinvesting in members today

› Working with OEMs to try and find ways to involve trailer manufacturers in their processes

› Expanding Dealer Affiliate benefits

If you are interested in learning about NATM Committees or would like to get involved, please contact NATM Executive Director Alex Stowe at Alex.Stowe@natm.com. ■

In It for the Long Haul: A Look at Women’s History in Manufacturing

March is Women’s History Month and to recognize this vital and hardworking faction of the industry, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) will take you through a brief history of women in manufacturing before catching up with some influential women in the industry today.

World Wars I and II

Women have been involved in manufacturing since its inception. They were primarily employed in textile mills until the start of World War I. Men were leaving their factory jobs to join the military and wartime products were a necessity, so the range of jobs open to women expanded. Employers expected female workers to perform the same tasks and maintain the same productivity levels as their male counterparts yet paid them significantly less.

Recognizing the need to specifically address women’s labor issues and prevent disruptions to wartime production, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) established the Women in Industry Service (WIS) in 1918. The DOL initially created the WIS as a temporary solution to the worker shortage. However, in 1920, it was made permanent and renamed the United States Women’s Bureau. This change occurred in the same year that Congress passed the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.

When the soldiers returned from the war, they expected to go back to their jobs. Coupled with reduced production during peacetime, employers ended up laying off many female workers.

During World War II, the demand for women in manufacturing surged once more. Manufacturers used propaganda, such as the iconic Rosie the Riveter, to encourage women to return to factory jobs. From 1940 to 1945, the number of women in the workforce increased by 50%.

Fast Forward to Today

In 1920, women were about 20% of the labor force. Today, women make up about 47% of the U.S. labor force. An estimated 30% of employees in manufacturing are female, with no significant change since 2021, says the Women in Manufacturing Association (WiM).

According to WiM’s 2024 Career Advancement in Manufacturing Report, 81% of women recommend a career in manufacturing. Seventy-nine percent of women are optimistic about progress in manufacturing, with 33% strongly agreeing that “Women have made significant progress in the manufacturing industry over the last 5 years.” This marks a significant increase from 2020, when only 17% shared the same view.

J’Lynn Brutoh Olah: Integrity is Integral

General Manager for Shelby Trailer Service, LLC, J’Lynn Brutoh Olah, has been in the industry since 1991. She began her career at Shelby Trailer as a secretary, at least in title.

“That’s what the guys in the back used to call me even though I did all the sales. ‘You’re just the secretary,’” Olah said. “I basically clawed my way to the top.”

Olah is hardworking and loyal. As general manager, she doesn’t make decisions for the company unless she backs them 100%.

“Everything I do, I do for the best of the company,”

she said. “That’s my goal, to make the company succeed. That’s my mentality even though I don’t own any of Shelby. This is still my company.”

She says at the beginning of her career it was difficult at times making sales. The more customers got to know her, the more they realized they could trust her and that she knew her stuff.

“Honesty is basically it. Somebody can sell anything if they believe in a product, and you have to believe in what you’re selling,” Olah said. “Always make sure the production is quality products.”

She’s faced her fair share of assumptions against her over her 34-year career, but she has a job to do and people at Shelby that depend on her. Her advice to women in maledominated field is to put your head down and get to work.

“Just do the best job you can and do what you know is right.”

Brenda Jennissen: Capable and Confident

Brenda Jennissen is president, and CEO, and co-owner (with her sister) of Felling Trailers. Before she held this handful of titles, she was tagging along on customer visits with her parents.

She says she takes a lot of pride in leading a company that her parents started five decades ago. What started out as a small welding and repair shop has grown into a multilocation operation that is seeing expansion after expansion.

While being second generation owners gives her a place to step up from, Jennissen says being female owners in the manufacturing industry wasn’t always comfortable.

“I would say it’s gotten much better, but earlier, when we were starting, I remember taking phone calls and someone asking to speak with the owner. The phone call was transferred to me. It wasn’t a video call, it was just over the phone, but I could just imagine the expression on the person’s face because they were surprised. I could hear it in their voice,” Jennissen said. “They were surprised to hear a female, and like I said, that it’s changed over the last 14 years. We’ve done a lot of work in our industry to really break down those barriers and show that it doesn’t matter if you’re female or male. Anyone can work in this industry if you have a passion for it.”

Confidence not arrogance is key for Jennissen. She says confidence is one of her strengths. It’s something her parents instilled in her and something she is teaching to her three girls

but knowing that you don’t have all the answers is a strength too.

“I surround myself with people who are experts in their particular areas. I’m not an engineer by trade, so I rely on my team of engineers,” Jennissen said. “It’s important to be humble and knowledgeable enough to know that I don’t know at all. It’s about finding the right people that do have those areas of expertise to go forward.”

Jennissen says the most important thing is having capable people in leadership roles. And at Felling a lot of those capable people are women. Jennissen says having women working in manufacturing makes it easier for other women to picture themselves there too.

“Our purchasing lead is a female and our marketing coordinator, she’s a female,” she said. “We do have quite a few females – our scheduling manager. I think it’s just great overall in society to deal with men and women as equals. And I think it just helps to solidify that.”

Bonnie Radjenovich: Making Space for Everyone

Bonnie Radjenovich is vice president of human resources and co-owner of Felling alongside her sister, Jennissen. She also is a second-generation owner who has been around the company and industry her whole life, so she knows her stuff. She’s had to field comments implying she doesn’t.

“That’s upsetting. I’ve done my research. I know what I’m doing,” Radjenovich said. “You just kind of brush it off. I mean, there’s those people out there. But honestly, I don’t run into it that often.”

Radjenovich would rather put her energy into her team. As VP of HR, it’s her job to manage employee relationships with each other and with the company. Felling does quarterly surveys to check in and the results tell her they’re going in the right direction.

“It shows they’re happy. They’re here and a part of the team. That’s been nice to see,” Radjenovich said. “You get your odd comment here and there, but I feel like because we are women own maybe our culture is a little more accepting of diversity here.”

The company’s culture and supporting diversity are very important to Radjenovich. For example, to be more inclusive of Spanish speakers, the company has hired its first bilingual receptionist. Radjenovich says that is just one step in the right direction.

“It’s set the tone of who we want to be. We want to have that inclusion. We catch ourselves. We ought to also have this or that in Spanish. Getting everything changed over wasn’t as quick,” she said. “We constantly have to adapt and change all these other things, too. So we’re working through it. We want to have that place of, we are a family. We are a team and everybody’s welcome.”

Melissa Searle: Creating An Environment to Thrive In

Melissa Searle is the newly minted director of operations for Laclede Chain Mfg. Co. An impressive upward trajectory for someone who’s been out of school just under 10 years.

Before she got to where she is now, she was toward her mechanical engineering degree. In school, she estimates that for every woman there were seven men in the program. For her, this non-traditional path has been a relatively smooth one.

“It’s been good. There are challenges. There are ups and downs. There are crack jokes, but for the most part, it’s been pretty easy for me,” Searle said.

Searle says she knew what she wanted her career to look like, so she put her head down and got to work. She knew she wanted to be a leader and that she wasn’t going to stop until she got there. This work ethic has not only served her well, but also the people around her.

(From left) Bonnie Radjenovich and Brenda Jennissen and sisters and co-owners of Felling Trailers. Photo provided by Felling Trailers..

“I really just have a drive to improve the process around everyone, for myself and for others, because I would rather us leave at the end of the day happy than leave at the end of the day frustrated or angry. That follows you home. You can’t just leave that at the door,” Searle said. “That’s what I strive for. I want to make everyone’s work life better, so when they go home their life is better.”

This people-centric viewpoint makes Searle different from the stereotypical engineer. She has a rare skill set that makes her an empathic people person as well as a talented engineer.

“I think for a lot of manufacturing leaders, their backgrounds are engineering or manufacturing, so it’s really easy for them to fall into the trap of, ‘Let’s fix the machine.’ It’s easier to fix the ‘thing issue,’ rather than the ‘people issue,’ Searle said. “I’m going to focus on more of the people issues like, if I can get the people on board to be able to do the machine thing better for me, then I’m setting us all up for success. I really focus on the people side of things and how I can improve that for them.”

Searle puts a lot of thought and work into what kind of leader she wants to be. She wants employees to be empowered to make their own decisions. They’re the ones who have to sell their ideas to their team or the plant and that be more successful if they believe in what they’re pitching, Searle says.

“It is different than what we, as a company, have seen in terms of management and leadership at the plant level. I’m definitely hitting some walls,” Searle said. “I think a lot of it stems from our culture previously of if they made the wrong decision, are they going to get yelled at? Are they going to get in trouble? I think I just have to break that cycle. You made the decision. I agreed with your decision, so now I’m going to support you. I’m going to be that roadblock that if anything comes downhill it’s going to hit me before it hits you, and I will take that. Then I will come to you, and we’ll have a completely different conversation than what someone had with me because the buck stops here. I have to own your decisions just like you have to own yours, and

if we can own them together, we’re going to be more successful.”

Change is hard in general for everyone, but in manufacturing, it just seems to be harder, Searle says. She understands asking people to change what they’ve done their entire careers is difficult, but keeping an open line of communication is key. She says the ability to be open and vulnerable is a major factor in her career growth and success so far.

“There’s kind of a stigma that being vulnerable is being weak. I think for me it’s the exact opposite. If I’m able to be vulnerable with my CEO, my peers, or anyone as I was kind of growing through the ranks about what I wanted and where I wanted to be – if I wasn’t able to be that vulnerable, I don’t think people would actually know that I wanted more, or that I needed more, or that I wanted continuous growth. I don’t want to just stay stagnant for my career. I think our CEO showed that to people, and so showing it, and then being able to practice it, it helps a lot in that open line of communication. I think that really changed the game for me,” Searle said. “We brought in a training called Dare to Lead, which really opened the company’s eyes to that vulnerability awareness and how it’s not a weakness. It can actually be a really big strength for people, and it can show you who they are and what they want without having to hide it.”

Looking ahead, Searle says Laclede is spending time and energy trying to make their positions accessible to everyone. Right now, women are primarily found on the sales team and men make up the manufacturing team. Manufacturing is hard work, and some of the more physical jobs were originally made for and are geared toward male employees.

“We have two sides. We have the actual chain-making process, and then we have the assembly warehouse, and I would say the assembly warehouse is where we’re going to see more women on our actual manufacturing floor. But in our form and mold process, where we’re actually making the chain, we have very limited females in that department,” Searle said. “How do we create an environment where the women could come into the workforce and be just as dominant as a man and not require strength or whatever to be able to make our chain? That’s something that I think our CEO is really on board with too. How do we automate things to make our process simpler so that anyone could come in and do it, and not just your typical manufacturing workforce?”

Women’s journey in manufacturing started more than a century ago and it’s far from over. Manufacturers have never shied away from hard work, and NATM Members continue to be at the forefront of progress. ■

NATM is thrilled to highlight this small sample of the women shaping the future in the industry. This is true year-round. Each month NATM recognizes a woman in manufacturing with its Women Crush Wednesday social media campaign. For more information, email Marketing@natm.com.

From Problem-Solver to Trailblazer: Lisa Rhinesmith’s Impact at LaVanture

Lisa Rhinesmith’s career began far from the trailer industry. After starting in insurance and transitioning to private banking, her path shifted unexpectedly when a private banking client introduced her to the trailer sector. Her connection with LaVanture Products grew over time, eventually leading her to join their team.

She didn’t just adapt to the trailer industry; she thrived. Now the first woman Vice President at LaVanture, Rhinesmith has proven herself as a vital leader who prioritizes collaboration, technical expertise, and integrity.

Innovating in a Complex Industry

Day-to-day, as VP of Sales, Rhinesmith is deeply involved in product development, pricing strategies, and problemsolving—whether it’s finding substitutes for delayed shipments or addressing technical challenges like adhesive compatibility.

Rhinesmith acknowledges that while she doesn’t gravitate toward cutting-edge trends, meeting customer expectations for sleek, modern designs is essential. The real challenge lies in ensuring adhesives perform effectively across various substrates.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution,” she notes, highlighting the complexity of finding reliable, adaptable materials.

Her technical knowledge and hands-on approach have earned her the respect of decision-makers across the industry. Rhinesmith emphasizes the importance of focusing on facts and problem-solving.

“I try to be really technical. And the more technical I was the more I could converse. Let’s focus on the problem and fix it,” she said.

Confidence, expertise, and a willingness to admit when you don’t have an answer—but committing to finding it—are key. Being ready to roll up your sleeves and get involved is just as important.

Achievements That Stand Out

Among her many accomplishments, Rhinesmith successfully managed the growth of multiple product lines before, during, and through the challenges of COVID—a time that tested the resilience and adaptability of businesses worldwide.

Richard LaVanture, President of LaVanture Products, highlights Lisa’s impact:

“Lisa does a great job managing [the] expectations of our customers and our employees. That, combined with her ability to work through situations and problems to find the best possible solution, is the reason I believe she deserves to be nominated.”

For Rhinesmith, her proudest accomplishment isn’t just her title—it’s building and leading a diverse, collaborative team.

“I’m proud of our sales team. They’re not afraid to get their hands dirty, ask questions, or focus on the big picture. Finding people who share those values isn’t easy, but it’s worth it,” she said.

She credits her success to a commitment to ethics and transparency.

“If you ever find yourself making a tough choice alone, go for the most ethical thing. It always pays off,” she advises.

What Fuels Her Passion

Rhinesmith’s enthusiasm for her work is palpable, especially when she talks about the NATM Annual Convention & Trade Show.

“It’s like a family reunion,” she said. “We’re not there just to sell; we’re there to connect. Our biggest competitors are also our biggest customers, and that kind of collaboration makes this industry so special.”

Outside of work, Rhinesmith channels her love for numbers into financial coaching. Over the past 30 years, she’s helped individuals and families transform their financial situations.

“It’s exciting to see someone go from struggling to pay their bills to having a savings account and financial security,” she shared.

Words of Wisdom

For anyone aspiring to grow in the trailer industry, Rhinesmith offers practical advice:

“Knowledge [is power]. Don’t take someone’s word for it—vet products, know your facts, and stay confident. Be willing to learn and get your hands dirty.”

She also stresses the importance of partnership.

“Bring something to the table,” she said. “Whether it’s solving problems or collaborating with customers.”

Shared ownership leads to better outcomes— and more pride in the process.

Gratitude and Reflection

Rhinesmith expressed her gratitude for the collaborative nature of the trailer industry, emphasizing how partnerships with manufacturers make the work both easier and more enjoyable. She finds great value in the relationships built with manufacturers, many of whom she considers friends. Rhinesmith especially appreciates connecting with those directly involved in the work, particularly the people on the production lines who bring everything to life.

Rhinesmith’s journey is an inspiring testament to the power of hard work, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace challenges. From managing product growth during unprecedented times to breaking barriers as LaVanture’s first woman VP. Through perseverance, expertise, and collaboration, she continues to pave the way for future leaders in the trailer industry. ■

One Small Thumbs Up For NATM Members, One Giant Leap For NATM’s Mission

In 2025, many recognize the significant role social media plays as a powerful tool for their businesses. It provides a platform for companies to announce product launches and share the latest updates, enables benchmarking against competitors, and serves as an everyday networking opportunity within the industry. However, what members may not fully grasp is the impact of their engagement.

As the only not-for-profit association devoted to the lightand medium-duty trailer industry, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) depends on member support in various ways, including sponsorships, investing in advertising packages, attending association events, and even simply “liking” a social media post from NATM.

Engaging actively on one of NATM’s social media channels creates a ripple effect. When you “like” a post, it signals to the social platform’s algorithm that this content resonates with the Association’s audience. That single “like” ignites the algorithm, allowing the post to reach a broader audience. Consequently, one small thumbs up helps keep the industry informed about the latest developments.

A well-informed industry is beneficial for everyone involved.

NATM’s mission is to promote trailer safety and the success of the trailer manufacturing industry through education and advocacy, where raising awareness is crucial. The Association recognizes that this specialized industry is frequently overlooked by those outside of it, making it essential to maintain a unified voice that is actively supported and engaged within the industry to achieve this goal successfully.

A more engaged audience for your association also translates to increased engagement on the various platforms where member companies advertise. Together, NATM and its members can cultivate a community of like-minded individuals who actively interact with promoted content, ultimately leading to greater engagement with your NATM advertisements.

The next time you’re browsing and come across a post from NATM or any other business you wish to support, be sure to give it a thumbs up. You never know how much a simple gesture can influence a business or even the entire industry.

You can connect with NATM on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. ■

Covered Wagon Trailers Celebrates 100,000 Trailer

Covered Wagon Trailers just celebrated their 100,000th trailer! Born and raised in Fitzgerald, Georgia, owner Gerald Pryor, has been an entrepreneur since the 1980s. He was introduced to the cargo trailer industry in 2009 and, a year later, Covered Wagon Trailers was born. After creating a wildly successful line of enclosed cargos, in 2019 he added Prospector, a line of dump, equipment and box trailers. Covered Wagon is one of the few manufacturers that build both lines in house.

Covered Wagon Trailers prides itself on innovation like making wide entry ramp doors with lift assist handles, 48-inch-wide side doors, and Cobra-lined rear hoop and tongue all standard options. One of the most loved innovations is the pullout steel step, standard on all 8.5 wides. This change deleted the step well allowing for more usable floor space. The most recent offering for the 2025-year model is their UTV trailer. A variation of the traditional escape door, the trailer offers an option for those hauling ATVs, UTVs, 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers and motorcycles, allowing drivers to exit the trailer comfortably.

door plant, Superior Doors. The fab shop produces many of the parts used on both lines and is vital in producing many of the prototypes that often make it to final product.

Superior Doors manufactures doors for the enclosed line and sells doors to other manufacturers to be used on their trailers. The doors are renowned in the industry, in part, due to their proprietary hinges.

Mr. Pryor also built an on-site Powder Coat facility, Pryority Powder Coating, so that parts used on the enclosed trailers could be coated in house. The stateof-the-art Wagner paint system is housed in a 36,000 square foot facility and is also available for outside commercial accounts.

The Covered Wagon Trailer brand, with all of its components, is proud to reach the 100,000th trailer milestone and looks forward to the next 100,000. As Gerald would say, “Sure it’s a trailer, but is it a Covered Wagon trailer?” Please visit www.coveredwagontrailers.com for more information.

In addition to the enclosed cargo line and the Prospector dump line, Covered Wagon has its own fabrication shop and

Covered Wagon Trailers, LLC has been a member of NATM since 2010. To learn more about them, visit www.coveredwagontrailers.com. ■

With its busy members in mind, NATM has put together the 2025 Trailer Expo Advertising Special. This includes a full-page ad in Tracks Magazine in the July/August and September/October issues. Being a part of the July/August issue gets your name in front of Association Members and additional dealers in the lead up to the Expo. The September/October issue is the Trailer Expo issue and will be chock full of Expo information with extra copies available at the Expo itself.

The September/October also is the annual dealer issue. It is focused on extra dealer-relevant content and is sent out to thousands of additional dealerships outside of the Association.

NATM Shifts Tracks Dealer Issue to Coincide with Trailer Expo in Fall

National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) Dealer Affiliates know the March/April issue of Tracks Magazine as the Special Dealer Issue. It is loaded with content tailored specifically for dealers and is mailed out to an additional 5,000 trailer dealerships nationwide.

NATM is shifting when the dealer issue is published. The Tracks Magazine Special Dealer Issue will now be the September/October issue each year. The magazine will bring the same content and the extended reach Dealer Affiliates have come to expect.

This issue shift will allow the Special Dealer Issue to coincide with the NATM Trailer Expo. Manufacturers’ advertising can serve two purposes! You can get your advertising in front of the thousands of additional dealers and showcase that your company is attending the Trailer Expo. If your ad includes your booth number, dealers will know right where to find you.

NATM knows manufacturers and suppliers are busy. To promote your company and your attendance at the Expo as easily as

possible, NATM has created a Trailer Expo advertising bundle! You’ll get two full-page Tracks ads – one in the July/August issue leading up to the event, and one in the September/October, issue which will coincide with and be available at the Trailer Expo. Also included is a spot in the Virtual Swag Bag emails. This interactive PDF is emailed to all registered attendees twice before the Expo. Your ad will be hyperlinked and can lead to a special Expo landing page or your company’s website.

This package is the official NATM channel to get your company and booth number out in front of attendees before the Expo begins! You provide the artwork, and NATM does the rest! Let NATM put in the leg work ahead of the show, so you have a jump start before your future clients even make it to Oklahoma City.

If you’re interested in advertising your NATM Trailer Expo attendance AND reaching thousands of additional dealerships, you can join the Special Dealer Issue Interest List by contacting NATM Tracks Editor Samantha Darling LaCount at Samantha.Darling@natm.com. ■

Refer Your Dealers to NATM Dealer Program

Garrison Diversion Conservancy District Selects Felling Trailers for Transport Needs

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. – The Garrison Diversion Conservancy District (Garrison Diversion) was created by the state of North Dakota in 1955 to develop the Garrison Diversion Unit (GDU) project which serves 28-member counties across North Dakota. Garrison Diversion focuses on irrigation, recreation, agriculture and natural resources and municipal, rural and industrial water supply. They are also responsible for operations and maintenance (O&M) of the federal GDU project facilities consisting of canals and pumping plants. This all entails the need to transport equipment from location to location and their quad axle detach trailer was at the end of its life cycle. Having a long-standing relationship (16 year), GDU looked to Ed Kinvig of Titan Machinery (a Felling Trailers dealer) to assist in the acquisition process of a new 65-ton hydraulic detachable gooseneck.

Garrison Diversion needed a custom 10’ wide trailer, capable of hauling several different pieces of equipment like excavators and dozers. “We needed a custom-built wide trailer and wanted it with a gooseneck lock with a pin style connector for unhooking the trailer bed, and a paint coating that would last,” said Darren Murray, O & M Superintendent GDU. Felling’s hydraulic detachable gooseneck locking design and coating system had Garrison Diversion sold. They had dealt with other brands that were not as functional, and the paint did not hold up. Kinvig and Garrison Diversion worked with Felling’s Jake Meyer, inside sales, and their engineering team to spec the trailer to Garrison Diversion’s needs.

With the design process completed the hydraulic detachable gooseneck moved on the production floor. The custom detach incorporated a knuckle trough in the rear of the main deck, 45º full height trunnion approach with bolt on wheel covers to provide a full-length load bearing flat modular top, air lift axles, amber strobe lights, flasher

kit, and an oversized load sign. Upon completion of the trailer build, Kinvig and the Garrison Diversion team made the journey to the Felling Trailers manufacturing facility to tour the plant and pick up their new detach.

When asked what advice the Garrison Diversion team had for other entities looking to purchase a trailer(s) for their own fleet, they replied, “If it’s something you will have for a long time, check out Felling Trailers, their coating (paint) on the trailer and the warranty is better than other brands. We have had a lot of different brands, and the paint just falls off.” According to Ed Kinvig of Titan Machinery, “Buy a Felling, the quality is there, the professionalism with the knowledgeable staff is second to none, working with Jake is great! They take care and build a high-quality product!” ■

Felling Trailers to Host Online Auction of Custom Team Warrior Trailer

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. – Felling Trailers will be hosting an online auction of custom Team Warrior FT-3 drop deck utility trailer to honor a special Felling Trailers team member, Kevin “Op” Athmann who passed in May of 2024. The auction will benefit the Athmann family of Albany, Minnesota, wife Sarah, and their children Kylie and Peyton. Felling Trailers has manufactured and painted a custom Sublime Green trailer with the Team Warrior emblem. The online auction will run for five days, from Feb. 10, 2025, through Feb. 15, 2025. The auction will coincide with the Athmann Family Benefit that will be taking place Saturday, Feb. 15, from 4–8 p.m. at “The Shed,” 10098 County Road 11, Sauk Centre, Minnesota. The event will include food, music, a silent auction, an online trailer auction, and more, celebrating Kevin’s impact on our lives. The benefit will help to support his (Kevin’s) family as they learn to navigate life without Kevin, providing critical financial assistance to help Sarah and her two children, Kylie and Peyton, to cover essential needs like medical bills, housing costs, and essential supplies.

Kevin’s journey started in January 2020 when he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma. Kevin and his family went through the treatment process, and in late 2020, he was pronounced cancer-free. In 2024, Kevin’s cancer came back, and he fought a valiant fight against the disease for a second time. Kevin “Op” Athmann died after battling acute myeloid leukemia in May of 2024, leaving behind his wife Sarah, daughter Kylie, son Peyton, his sister Kari, and her family, and parents Vern and Diane. Kevin had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being a jokester. If you knew Kevin, you know he had a positive presence and enjoyed giving and taking jokes with his happygo-lucky attitude. He had a distinctive smile and an energetic personality. His family was, without a doubt, his pride and joy.

Kevin “Op” Athmann, was a welder-fabricator extraordinaire with Team Felling Trailers for over a combined 19 years. “We will always remember “Op,” not only as our colleague but also as our friend. Kevin was a very skilled welder-fabricator who was proactive in asking the people on his team what they needed to be done. He was an uplifting individual, and his battle with lymphoma four years ago and, most recently, leukemia was inspiring. It is particularly special to us that both he and his dad were a significant part of Felling Trailers’ success. He will always be remembered and missed tremendously. Kevin watches over his loving and devoted wife Sarah, his daughter Kylie and son Peyton, his sister Kari and her family, and parents Vern and Diane. May

God continue to watch over his family, friends, and the Felling Trailers team as we navigate life without the fun-loving force that was Kevin!” said Brenda Jennissen, Felling Trailers CEO.

The Team Warrior auction will start on Monday, Feb. 10, at noon and run for five days, ending Saturday, Feb. 15, at 6 pm during the Athmann Family Benefit, celebrating Kevin’s 46th heavenly birthday. To view or bid on the online auction, go to www.32auctions.com/AthmannFamilyBenefit. Arrangements must be made for pick up at Felling Trailers’ manufacturing facility or delivery (freight extra). ■
